The Scone Equine Hospital Festival Parade on Saturday, May 9 is one of the major highlights of the 35th annual Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival.

Scone riding high with 35th festival PEOPLE in the Upper Hunter Valley could be excused for ‘horsing around’ at this time of the year but that’s just all part of the fun of the 35th Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival. The festival, which started on April 30, will run until May 17 and program a full program of events from competition to displays, educational and informative events and plenty of great family fun. President of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival, Lee Watts said every May the festival continues to grow with the ongoing support of local people and more visitors travelling from around the country to enjoy the festival and participate in events. “The programs are out so it is time to plan your time at the festival with friends and family,” Ms Watts said. One of the many highlights of the festival is the Scone Equine Hospital street parade featuring decorated floats of all descriptions, bands, the Light Horse Brigade, horse drawn vehicles and many horses and riders. “The parade is one of the largest in regional Australia, it’s great to see the whole town enjoy the parade,” she said. “This year's’ theme is Equine Celebrations and we have plenty to celebrate in the Upper Hunter. “The parade is just the start of a great day out; after the parade people walk down to the

Grammar School fete and then just down the road at White Park people can watch the Professional Farriers Association NSW Brand State Title, the Blacksmith Competitions and the fast paced equestrian sport Tentpegging Championships, which attracts competitors from NSW, Queensland and Victoria. “The day culminates with another big event, the charity rodeo.” There are events running through the week including arts and crafts exhibitions, the unique horse centre exhibition, stud tours, demonstrations, line dancing, and awards nights. As far as competitions go, there will action a plenty with tent pegging, polo, vaulting, sheep dog trials and the Scone Cup race day. “As always, the festival will finish with a bang on Sunday May 17 with the Isuzu Ute Grand Finale Fireworks and Picnic by Lake Glenbawn Dam,” Ms Lee said. “This is my first year as President of the Horse Festival and it has been fantastic to work with a team of volunteers who are passionate about the festival and incredibly hard working.” To plan your time and see what’s on at the Scone festival, visit the website www.horsecapital.com.au/festival, follow the festival on Facebook or pick up a booklet from the Scone Visitor Information and Horse Centre.

1992 Eventing Team join the elite in EA Hall of Fame Equestrian Australia is pleased to announce that the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games Eventing Team of Matthew Ryan, Andrew Hoy, Gillian Rolton and David Green will be inducted into the EA Hall of Fame in the team's category. Inductees will be celebrated at the annual Sport Achievement Awards night on Friday, June 5 in Melbourne. The Australian Eventing team won team gold in the three day equestrian event at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 having overcome a series of setbacks. The team was made up of Andrew Hoy on Kiwi, Matthew Ryan on Kibah Tic Toc, David Green on Duncan, Gillian Rolton on Peppermint Grove and coached by Wayne Roycroft. Leading into the competition the team was already depleted by injury and illness and was reduced to the minimum three members when David Green's horse Duncan was ruled unfit after the second day. Correct shoeing a critical issue By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic We have now discussed at great length, podiatry, farriery, and corrective shoeing. These are “buzz words” and very popular topics that every one likes to think they have some particular expertise, but which, in most situations, are not really practiced based on any particular scientific principles. Most horses get by, and over time, very often a satisfactory management system evolves that keeps the horse functioning. The critical point here is that the necessity to invoke systems and terms such as these, the horse usually has some particular problem. Fortunately, the very great majority of horses do not have problems. Most are shod, and the trimming and shoeing is done by very competent farriers who are experienced and very good at their trade. However, it is a very demanding task, and in a lot of cases, the owners are not really willing to commit excess funds to shoeing and so the farrier simply fits and

Hendra vaccination, but after this, the two most important considerations are what they feed their horse and what they do with their feet. As I have said, fortunately most horses get by with whatever is done with their feet, but in this, the 21st century, we have very much more knowledge about many things compared to what was available when horses were the primary means of getting about and the conventions of farriery evolved. Radiography and xrays of the feet have allowed us to gain remarkable insights into the relationship of the bones in the foot, to the hoof capsule, and there are now available excellent objective criteria that give us critical information as to the conformation of the foot. These factors have been derived and defined after much scientific

applies the shoe to the foot as it is presented. The horse keeps performing and the owner proudly espouses the wonderful virtues of their great farrier. In very many of these situations, I believe this should be described as “functional shoeing”, not necessarily “correct shoeing”. There are really only three critical management issues owners must take care of in looking after their horse. The first in this area is of course

study and applying logical mechanical engineering principles to the bio mechanics of how the feet function. Some of the original work came from Gene Ovineck’s very excellent study of the feet of wild horses in central USA. He concluded that these wild horses that roamed vast distances, all wore their feet into a particular pattern, which basically ended up with four “Pillars” or points of contact of the foot with the ground. There are two at the heels, and two at the quarters. These represent where the foot impacts the ground and where the foot breaks over. It is certainly very true that our domestic horses do not roam vast distances. In fact, most are confined in stables, yards, or relatively small paddocks, and so their feet get very little natural wear. Also, their relatively sedentary existence means that there is no great demand for blood to pump through the feet and so there is a relative shortage of fresh healthy oxygenated blood coursing through the feet. These two factors combine to result in the relatively un-natural feet that we see on our horses. There is another factor worth discussing. The largest group of performance horses in this country are thoroughbred racehorses. This is a booming industry and there are many foals bred each year to hopefully become racehorses. Equine x-rays provide remarkable insights from page 10 Many of them simply are not fast enough and this is where we source a lot of our pleasure performance horses. A very high proportion of these horses have so called long toes and low heels with relatively thin soles. I hear it said so many times, “Those racetrack farriers must be dreadful, look at how they have shod the horse”. This is not correct. Racehorses are bred and selected for speed and there is a very direct correlation between toe length, and stride length. Speed is determined by stride length and stride frequency. As most horses have a similar stride frequency, it stands to reason that the one with the longer stride, will get to the finish line more quickly. (It is not quite as simple as that but it illustrates the point) so it is not the farrier’s fault that our horses have so called bad feet. We have been selecting for this trait for hundreds of years. Our problem is dealing with problems such as these for the rest of the horse’s life. This is where “CORRECT” shoeing becomes important. Correct shoeing is not picking up a horse’s foot, looking at the sole surface, trimming it to shape, and fitting a shoe to that foot. Correct shoeing implies critically assessing the conformation of the horse’s leg and hoof and then designing a trim and shoe that best

The hoof is trimmed and the shoe should be fitted to the individual hoof.

serves to support that foot and enhance the mechanics of the forces and loads that are being applied. Ideally this is done with radiographs, and it is my belief that every horse should have a basic survey set of xrays taken of the feet so that management knows exactly what the conformation is, and can the proceed accordingly. This is rarely the case. It is however, relatively easy to train oneself to be able to “look” at the foot and work out exactly where the pedal bone sits in the hoof capsule and shoe accordingly.

The principles always go back to Ovineck’s “Four Pillars” and this should be the basis of how the horse is shod. It is not difficult, and relatively easy to learn, but the subjects are rarely taught and not many people have a proper understanding. It is well worth searching “Four Point Trim” on Google and studying the subject. The shoe should be fitted so that it best conforms to the shape and position of the coffin bone, not fitted to the perimeter of the hoof capsule as is so often done. This is what would be defined as “Correct Shoeing”

Famous Australian breed making a comeback The 100th commemoration of the Gallipoli landings has brought into the focus, the spirit and courage of the Anzac soldiers, many of whom belonged to various Australian Light Horse regiments. However it has also brought attention to what the Light Horse mount - the Waler. The Waler evolved from a diverse range of breeds imported to the colonies in Australia, able to tolerate tough terrain and harsh conditions. In their infancy, the Waler was a working horse; used to work the land and for transporting goods, pulling coaches and as a means for personal transportation. They could cover long distances tirelessly at a steady pace, and needed little more than what the earth provided as nourishment. In 1816 the first Walers were shipped to India, purchased by a Alexander Riley, beginning the demand in to be used as remounts for the cavalry, artillery horses, and as carriage and sport horses for both the British Army and the Raj in India. The term, Waler, was coined by the British in 1846 in Calcutta to describe horses imported from NSW. The breed has a distinguished war record. During the Boer War, Australia dispatched an estimated 46,314 horses overseas for use by the Australian Infantry Forces in South Africa. In 1904, 10,000 Walers were shipped from Australia to Ujina, Japan for the use of the Japanese Army against the Russians in the battle for Manchuria and Korea. In the First World War 121,324 Walers were

Of these, 39,348 served with the First Australian Imperial Force, mainly in the Middle East, while 81,976 were sent to India. October 31, 1917, marks the epic event that the Waler today is most famous for; when two regiments of Australian Lighthorse, the 4th, Victorians, and the 12th, from NSW, charged the Turkish defenses of Beersheba, Palestine. With bayonets in their hands, the Light Horsemen and their Waler steeds charged over six kilometers of open ground against the Turkish and German guns. It is renowned as the last great successful cavalry charge in history. Seventy horses were killed that day, and many more lay dying on the battle field, along

with 31 dead soldiers and 32 wounded. Of all the horses that bore the burden of this campaign, only one came home; a bay gelding by the name of 'Sandy', the mount of MajorGeneral W.T. Bridges; an officer who died at sea on May 18, 1915 from wounds sustained at Gallipoli. Of the remaining veterans, the aged and battle-worn were destroyed, while, as Australia's strict quarantine laws had forbidden their return, healthy animals were to be sold to the local population. Many of these horses were also destroyed, as troopers solicited to have their horses shot rather than leave them to starve. In the 19602, the Waler was pushed to the brink of breeding extinction, however, a few prudent families who maintained Waler breeding, and it is thanks to them that the Waler still exists to this day. In 1986 the Waler's salvation set out on a campaign to find what remained of the breed, and the first herd of descendants was discovered where once there had been a remount station, near Alice Springs. Today, the Waler is protected and maintained by the Waler Horse Owners and Breeders Association of Australia Inc. (WHOBAA), and due to their efforts that this iconic Australian breed has slowly begun to re-establish itself, and is once again proving it's courage, hardiness and loyalty, not at war, but as recreational and competition mounts. Nutrition for your pregnant mare Supplied by EQUINE VIT & MIN

As we move into autumn, the excitement of finding out that your mare is pregnant may be wearing off. But have you thought about what you’ll need to feed her from now until she foals? Provided your mare was in good condition, and being fed a well balanced forage-based diet supplemented with high quality protein and a vitamin and mineral supplement to fill any gaps and correct mineral ratios, her dietary needs will not visibly alter much for the first six months of pregnancy. However, if she is lacking in energy or vitamins and minerals, her body will ‘mine’ its own resources to give these to the growing foetus. The first rule of good horse nutrition is to feed plenty of roughage – pasture, hay or chaff. Unless your mare is overweight, it is safe to feed as much grassbased roughage as she will eat. If your mare needs an energy source such as grain or pellets to continue in light work or to maintain weight, then you

Monitor pregnant mare’ body conditions to ensure she has the right balance in her diet especially vitamins and minerals.

should continue to feed it and carefully monitor her body condition. Your mare needs to be a healthy weight (not too heavy, not too light) to maintain a healthy pregnancy, but her body’s requirement for energy throughout pregnancy remains close to her need when spelling or in light work. Pregnant, lactating and growing horses need high quality protein in their diets – especially for lysine, a key amino acid which

they are unable to produce in their bodies. Soybean meal is one commonly used ingredient to add lysine to breeding horse feeds. During the last three months of pregnancy, your mare will need 50% more lysine than usual (a 600kg mare needs 46g of lysine/day at 11 months gestation). Your pregnant mare’s need for some minerals is higher than when spelling and in some cases, is higher than when per-

forming very heavy exercise. The main increase for mineral nutrition relates to calcium and phosphorous, which are needed in increasing amounts as the pregnancy progresses; and for copper, iron and iodine in the last three months. As with mineral supplementation in all classes of horses, it is imperative that your pregnant mare obtains all the minerals she needs, in carefully balanced ratios from all food sources. Equine Vit&Min is unique in its ability to balance minerals across the entire diet of Australian horses on foragebased diets. How can Synbiotics benefit your horse's health?

Probiotics are the live microorganisms

ucts and while their names are similar they are two entirely different types and have actions unique to each form. To put it simply, probiotics are "good" microbes and bacteria, prebiotics are the foods that feed these good microbes and bacteria. Fermentation and the breakdown of grass, hay and other forms of feed are reliant on an excellent GI function; therefore the microbes and bacteria found in probiotics are essential for this to occur. The fermentation process results in the production of volatile fatty acids that provide an important energy source for the horse. The microbes also produce B vitamins and other nutrients which are of high importance to the overall health and well being of the horse. Most importantly the "good" microbesyeasts, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi-keep the "bad" microbes (such as Salmonella and Clostridium difficile) from overpopulating the intestines which may then cause diarrhoea and illness.

Prebiotics are food ingredients that stimulate production or activity of bacteria that live in the horse's gastrointestinal tract. Your horse does not digest these food ingredients; they are actually "fed" to the good bugs. Prebiotics are most commonly carbohydrates-long chains of sugar molecules bound together. Some of the most common prebiotics used in equine supplements include fructooligosaccharides, xylooligosaccharides, polydextrose, mannooligosaccharides(MOS), galactooligosaccharides, pectin, and psyllium. These prebiotics are digested by the "good" microorganisms in the horse's digestive system to increase their numbers or activity. Two of the best known "good" bacteria are Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Probiotics are the live microorganisms themselves, if administered at sufficient levels; these microorganisms present a health benefit for the horse.

By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine nutritional therapist and medical herbalist How can Synbiotics benefit your horse's health? The term synbiotic refers to when a food or substance contains a prebiotic that specifically acts on the probiotic that is present also. This term comes from the word synergism. Synbiotics offer additional benefit than just consuming a prebiotic or probiotic on its own. Nutritional formulas are very popular with horse owners and products produced which aid digestive upsets and conditions are becoming almost as widely used as joint supplements. This is really not surprising considering the sensitivity of the equine digestive system and the horse is so reliant on the way the gastrointestinal tract functions. I have often said that whoever created the horse's digestive system must have been on drugs as it is not the most functional. There are many digestive related conditions in horses that will benefit from the use of pro and prebiotics, these include, diarrhoea, ulcers, poor digestion and colic. Poor diets or the wrong type of diet can also impact on the digestive system. Many nutritionists, veterinarians, health experts and researchers believe that the health of the GI improves many aspects of health in the horse including wind and colic, digestion, utilisation and absorption of nutrients, assists in maintaining immune function and can protect the horse against diarrhoea causing organisms, which include salmonella etc. A healthy GI can also reduce the risk of Laminitis. There are a number of products on the market that contain digestive enzymes, specific herbs such as slippery elm, Aloe Vera and marshmallow root etc Prebiotics and Probiotics are the most commonly used ingredients in digestive prod-

To be considered a probiotic, the bacteria included in the supplement must be alive when administered and contain a taxonomically defined microbe(s), including genus, species, and strain; and be safe for the intended use. Most equine probiotics include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species of bacteria and/or the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. Preand Probiotics benefit horses in many ways and are used by horse owners and equine health practitioners principally for GIrelated conditions (i.e., diarrhoea), to encourage the growth of the good microbes, and to reduce the risk of invasion and growth of disease-causing bacteria. It is quite well known that antibiotic administration, stress, transport, abrupt dietary changes, and Clostridium spp. or Salmonella spp. infections can potentially alter the normal microbe population in a horse's large intestine. Horse owners often administer prebiotics and/or probiotics to horses that are being treated with antibiotics, have developed diarrhoea, are off their feed, are about to travel or are experiencing a stressful event. The more sophisticated and complex Synbiotics (probiotics and prebiotics) are only found in the human health industry. A number of years ago I developed a formula for the human health market and as an Equine and Human Nutritionist it is I believe it is one of the very best available.

Horse owners often administer prebiotics and/or probiotics to horses.

There has been a great deal of research behind this formula and its action in the human and animal body. This formula is also excellent for managing Mycotoxins in horses. This formula contains Glycomax ™ High Purity Immunoglobulins, Lactobacillus acidophilus 7.0 Billion CFU, Lactobacillus plantarum 7.0

The Equine digestive system

Billion CFU, Bifi dobacterium longum 1.0 Billion CFU, Aloe barbadensis leaf equiv. extract dry 200:1 (aloe vera) equiv: aloe polysaccharides 1mg = 20mg ,Ulmus rubra stem bark dry 10mg, Peppermint Extract 10:1 10mg Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell dry 62.5mg, Selenium (as Selenomethionine .0625mg) 25mcg, Zinc (as amino acid chelate) 1mg and a number of other supporting nutrients. The formula has tested to have exceptional benefits in treating digestive health concerns in both humans and animals. The synergy between prebiotics and probiotics supported by the herbs and other nutrients in this formula helps to restore a healthy balance and benefits metabolism in the digestive system. This pleasant tasting formula helps to maintain a healthy bacterial flora and has a beneficial impact on metabolic processes. It reduces putrefactive activity in the gut and protects the mucosal barrier function. The prebiotics confer a competitive advantage for the survival and implantation of these live probiotics over

the putrefactive species Clostridia, and also Enterobacteriaceae. Clinical and experimental studies suggest that the relative balance of aggressive and protective bacterial species is altered in many digestive disorders. Antibiotics can selectively decrease tissue invasion and eliminate aggressive bacterial species or globally decrease luminal and mucosal bacterial concentrations, depending on their spectrum of activity. Alternatively, administration of beneficial bacterial species (probiotics), poorly absorbed dietary oligosaccha-rides (prebiotics), or combined probiotics and prebiotics (synbiotics) can restore a predominance of beneficial Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. My personal advice is to always keep the BioEquus on hand in the fridge and to use it when required, but also use it as a preventative measure. CARLOS TABERNABERRI CLINIC Well known trainer, Carlos Tabernaberri is passionate at developing a horse through a good foundation and not through the force of a bit to make him look the part. He believes there are no problems in either the horse or rider, just a lack of communication, understanding and trust. That's why he uses this gentling method, whether introducing a horse to the saddle for the first time or correcting an existing behavioural problem. It ensures improved performance and versatility, regardless of your preferred discipline, age or experience level. Carlos will be covering a broad range of areas, both on the ground and under saddle in his upcoming Moggill clinics. Riders and horses of all ages, disciplines and levels are welcome. Very limited spaces with horses available and fencesitters are also welcome. For more information or to book a space please contact Nicole on 0414 320 974 or email firefly2376@yahoo.com.au

The Horse Report

Miniatures horses – remarkably versatile By NICOLA FIELD Small in size, big in heart, miniature horses have a surprisingly impressive skill set. “But what do you do with them?” It’s a question miniature horse owners are inevitably asked at some stage and the response can be far more involved than many people anticipate. Miniature horses – like their larger counterparts – each have their own personality however they tend to share a few common characteristics including great intelligence and willingness to please. This makes the diminutive horses highly trainable and the growth of dedicated miniature horse shows as well as miniature horse classes has given the breed greater opportunities to demonstrate their versatility. Along with traditional halter classes, many shows now provide what are broadly termed ‘performance’ classes. These incorporate lungeline events plus hunter (jumping) and trail classes that are based on Western models. A trail class for instance may see the horse and handler complete six to eight movements including backing, side passes, pivots, straddles as well as negotiating bridges, cones and gates. Unlike Western events, miniature performance classes are performed in-hand so rather than using traditional aids handler must provide verbal and physical cues. These cues can be quite unique to one horse/handler combination and this tends to see a strong rapport develop between miniatures and their handler. It is in the area of showjumping however that miniature horses often surprise even the most seasoned horse lover. Despite their small size, miniature horses can outperform their larger cousins on a horse:jump height ratio. As a guide, the recent 2015 National Show held by the Independent Miniature Horse Registry in Tamworth NSW, included a Guinness Book of Records bid for the highest jump achieved by a miniature horse. The eventual winner, and now world record holder - Castrawes Paleface Orion, is a 37.5 inch chestnut gelding. Paleface jumped a remarkable 42 inches on the day (though he has previously cleared heights of up to 48 inches). That’s the equivalent of a 16 Page 22

Traditional halter classes are held at most local shows.

hand horse jumping almost two metres. Further highlighting the versatility of miniature horses, the same IMHR National Show featured a three day event comprised of the traditional elements of dressage (in-hand), cross country and showjumping. The event was judged by wellknown horseman - Kentuckybased Wayne Hipsley, who commended the ability of the 3DE to showcase the skills of both horse and handler. Along with performance, showjumping and halter classes, there is also burgeoning interest in miniature horses harness events. For many former big horse enthusiasts who no longer have the time or confidence to ride under saddle, miniature harness events provide a new avenue to enjoy showing horses competitively – or simply become part of a like-minded community of horse lovers. The Gladstone Miniature Horse and Pony Extravaganza will take place on May 16 and 17 at the Gladstone Showgrounds. This will be held over two days with halter classes commencing on the Saturday at 11.30am, followed by the harness and long reining and conclude with the costume classes. The Sunday morning’s program will commence at 8am with the youth performance followed by adult performance and jumping. The judge for the two days will be Ms Vicki Klein from the A.C.T. Ms Klein is an accredited International and National Miniature Horse Show judge. The Gladstone Showgrounds provide covered stables, wash bays, camping and facilities with horse feed and bedding available. There will be catering on the grounds and the showgrounds are located a short distance from the town central.

Polocrosse players make Australian Junior Squad Three players from the New England Girls School (NEGS) Polocrosse Academy have been selected in the Australian Junior Polocrosse Squad based on their recent performance at State events. Results from recent major national Polocrosse events have demonstrated the (NEGS) ability to produce some of the best junior female polocrosse riders in the country with three students, Jessie Ross, Josie Wilson and Lindsay Doolan selected for the Australian Junior Squad. On April 6, a cohort of NEGS students travelled to Albury to compete in the Australian Polocrosse Junior Classic. The Classic is a three day competition against teams from New Zealand and Australia including the Northern Territory and Western Australia which came after three days of coaching from some of Australia's best coaches. NEGS were strongly represented by three girls who were selected in NSW teams to play in the Classic, they included Jessie Ross in the winning NSW Number 1 side and Tory Fielder and Josie Wilson in the NSW Number 2 side. Jessie Ross also won the best Junior Girl Number 3 (representing the position that they play) and Year 6 student Abby Finlayson won Best NSW Sub Junior Number 3 as well as Best Under 12 Female Player and Best Under 12 Australian Stock Horse. Abby currently trains at NEGS and is enrolled in senior school for 2016. In her speech, Abby thanked Head of NEGS Polocrosse Academy, Hayden Turnbull, for her training at NEGS and credited Hayden for her success. Run in conjunction with the Classic was the inaugural Silver Stirrup Ladies Polocrosse Open of which Lindsey Doolan was invited to compete in. The Silver Stirrup Ladies Polocrosse Open consisted of six teams of six female players, each team must have one under 18 "Rising Star". Lindsey was awarded the Rising Star award for the best Under 18 player. At just 16 years of age, the passionate rider was one of the youngest selected. According to Head of NEGS Polocrosse Academy, Hayden Turnbull, selectors were "blown away by the improvement and exceptionally high standard of the girls who had been training at the NEGS Academy, all commenting on their rapid progress in a relatively short space of time". NEGS also impressed at the Barastoc Interstate Series held in Warwick on April 17-19 with Lindsey Doolan, Jessie Ross and Josie Wilson selected to play in the winning NSW junior girls side. During this match Lindsay took out the prestigious best horse rider combination and best Australian Stockhorse on Ground for her division. Head of NEGS Equestrian, Ms Wendy Fitzgerald believes the academy is well posi-

tioned to support young female talent keen to make their mark in a traditionally male dominated sport. "Most of our players are keen to make the

transition from club player to representative player and we want to encourage young, aspiring players to realise their true potential and follow their dreams," Ms Fitzgerald said. "Our girls are great ambassadors for the school and we hope will prove to be great ambassadors for the sport. Aim to create a thinking, acting horse

Understanding what a horse regards as reward can be a useful training tool. mentally and physically. does want I want because he I like to pepper my training sesknows that there is no better sions with lots of breaks (releases), option for him. in order to motivate the horse to I want to create a horse that is look for the 'right answer'. motivated to perform because he My desire is to create a thinking, knows he gets a reward - and its acting horse - not a horse that is his type of reward (release) not a simply waiting for me to get off reward that is for me (a pat). because he just doesn't know what This, to me, is the beginning of the rider is looking for. building a mutual relationship, I don't want to create a horse that one in which both parties benefit.

Taking a break from training routines can be reward enough for a horse. www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com - Ph 07 55909721 - mob 0413 733 294 - Email: cobakibob@bigpond.com

tanjakraus@gmail.com

What motivates your horse? To put it simply - comfort. Often you will hear talk of 'comfort and discomfort' when it comes to training our horses. And sometimes this can cause confusion in us, because our ideas of 'comfort' are generally tangible - if I say to a human - tell me what makes you comfortable, or tell me what the word 'comfort' means to you, the answer is often things like - a warm bed on a cold day, wearing our 'trakkies', or comfortable shoes. We might think of 'comfort food' like a hot favourite meal, or chocolate. So when we humans try to think about comfort in terms of our horses, we often 'humanize' it. We consider our horse comfortable when he has a warm rug, a dry stable and a big bucket of commercial feed. These are all things that wild horses, or herds of horses rarely see and yet they are arguable the most mentally and physically sound horses that we get to see - why is this ? Because our horses don't need warm rugs, dry stables or commercial feed - what they need is consistency. They need to know they have a leader who can provide safety from predators, access to food and water. They also need to know that they are understood, and can understand what is being asked of them. This is where training comes in. When it comes to training, it is imperative that we check our own egos at the arena gate, and really look at what the horse is looking for - in order to offer that to him, as a reward when he does what we are looking for. The human walks into the arena, and thinks 'I want X today' let’s call 'X' Flying changes - but 'X' is

anything that you are training for that particular session. So we have our focus - but what is the horse’s focus ? We often humanize our training and think 'I’ll give him a pat when he does something right' or 'I’ll give him a treat when he does something right', but when we look to herd dynamics - what happens when our horses 'do the right thing' is they get left alone - hence comfort. So if we look at what is comfort to our horse - being left alone - we can use this in our training. We head into the arena, we put the cue on for the flying change and nothing happens. So we try again, circle back around, put the cue on for the flying change, nothing happens, so we circle back again, try again with the cue and BAM - a flying change. Now our human instinct is 'oh good he got it right, let’s do it again' but what the horse needs to feel is an immediate release - or comfort. We can do this in a couple of ways - one would just to be to canter on - the horse can find comfort in just traveling along, or we can bring the horse to a stop, and allow him to rest for a minute or so. I personally would bring the horse to a stop, especially the first few times that I achieved the flying change. In fact on the first ever session when the horse got the flying change correct, I would quit the entire session there. That’s a big release! I often see training sessions with horses go into the 20 minute, half an hour, hour without the horse getting a break, ever. The reins are collected and stay collected for that entire time. There comes a point when this horse is just not thinking anymore because he is simply too fatigued -
