A seminar centre will run through the day, providing equestrians with access to an array of industry professionals -vets, dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, bitting experts, saddle fitting experts, rider position analysts, sports psychologists, farriers and trainers. These experts are presenting the latest and hottest topics, as well as common issues that often affect most horse owners. These sessions are open presentations – meaning comments, questions and feedback is encouraged. War Horse impresses on all levels Excitement is starting to build north of the NSW/ Queensland border and it has nothing to do with football. As the Sydney season of the award - winning stage production, War Horse, enters its final few weeks, Brisbane audiences are eagerly waiting with anticipation to see the production which has earned high praise around the world. War Horse finishes its Sydney season on June 30 and having already won over audiences in Melbourne, the production has done the same in the Harbour City. Since its world premiere in London in 2007, War Horse has won numerous prestigious awards including two Laurence Olivier Awards, five Tony Awards and four Outer Critics' Circle Awards amongst a host of others. Nick Stafford's stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book, War Horse is a magnificent drama which tells the heartwrenching story of Joey, the beloved horse of a boy called Albert, who is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of World War I and shipped to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and

At the show’s heart are astonishing puppets strong enough for men to ride, created by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on the stage. Life size horses traverse the stage, their flanks, hides and sinews built of steel, leather and aircraft cables. Actors, working with these dynamic puppets, lead

Australian audiences on an emotionally-charged journey through history. Steven Spielberg's movie adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's

novel, released by DreamWorks Studios in late 2011, was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture. Continued page 4

Puppeteer brings horse to life By BOB ANTHONY For puppeteer Keira Lyons, being part of the production of War Horse makes her feel `honoured’. She has a central role in the production and while she doesn’t say anything, it’s what she does that is crucial to the story. Keira plays the hind of the principal horses, Joey and Topthorn and yes, while she admits to being the `butt’ of a few jokes, it is also a very demanding role. “Working as a team for each horse, it is our role to convince the audience that they aren’t just looking at a large puppet but a horse,” she said. “It is our role to bring the puppets to life and that’s a challenge, not just physically but also in the mannerisms and character of each horse.” Keira admits that she wasn’t a real horse person before being involved in War Horse but after playing a horse in the production, she can understand them and even have an empathy with horses she now sees, especially working horses. “We visited the Mounted Police stables and watched how they interacted with their horses and the training that was involved,” Keira said. “It many ways it helped to get our heads

Understanding a mare’s estrous cycle The estrous cycle controls when a mare is sexually receptive toward a stallion, and helps to physically prepare the mare for conception. It generally occurs during the spring and summer months, although some mares may be sexually receptive into the late fall, and is controlled by the photoperiod (length of the day), the cycle first triggered when the days begin to lengthen. The normal estrous cycle in the mare is 21 to 22 days long, as defined by the intervals between ovulation. Estrus Estrus is the time the mare is `hot’ , `in’ ,or `standing’. It is the follicular phase, as the overt signs of estrus are attributable to the estrogen production by the follicle on the ovary. The duration is normally considered to be seven days but the duration actually varies with time of year. The duration of estrus is inversely proportional to day length, which means it becomes shorter at the peak of the cycling season. Signs: The mare will show interest in

Understanding the estrous cycle ing a successful mating. the stallion, and may actually seek out a stallion when she is in estrus. The mare will move her ears forward, elevate her tail, squat to urinate (termed `breaking down’), event the clitoris (termed `winking’) and accept the stallion for breeding. This may include raising the tail and revealing the vulva. A stallion, approaching with a high head, will usually nicker, nip and nudge the mare, as well as sniff her urine to determine her readiness for mating. Some mares may not show sexual receptivity. Ovulation: Ovulation is often said to

of a mare is crucial in ensuroccur on about day five of cycle, or one to two days before end the of estrus. This can be confusing as the duration of estrus changes during the season, and the mare does not base when to ovulate on when she anticipates going out of estrus. A better way to state when ovulation occurs is that the mare goes out of heat one to two days after ovulation. This makes much more sense in that after ovulation the follicle is a CH and is not producing estrogen, therefore the mare will not show signs of heat after ovulation. Diestrus

Diestrus is called `cold’, `out’ or the luteal phase, since it is dominated by progesterone produced by the corpus luteum. The duration of diestrus is a consistent 14 -15 days. When counting days in a mare's cycle, it is best to start counting the day the mare goes out of heat and count forward 14 -15 days to predict when she will next come into heat. In this way you can anticipate when the next heat will be better than counting the traditional 21 days. During diestrus the mare rejects the stallion's advances. She does this by pinning her ears back and kicking at the stallion. While horses in the wild mate and foal in mid to late spring, in the case of horses domestically bred for competitive purposes, especially horse racing and various futurities, it is desirable that they be born as close to August 1 in the Southern Hemisphere as possible, so as to be at an advantage in size and maturity when competing against other horses in the same age group. * Reference www.vetmed.Isu.edu

Kilkivan ready to host Gold Cup Australia’s premier endurance ride, the Tom Quilty Gold Cup will be held this year at Kilkivan in Queensland over the weekend of June 7-9. Hosted by the the Kilkivan Endurance Riders, the small town, 53 kms north west of Gympie and about 286km north west of Brisbane, will attract some of the best endurance riders from around Australia and overseas, all aiming to claim the prestigious Gold Cup or at least one of the specially crafted Quilty belt buckles for every successful finisher. Kilkivan will play host to hundreds of horses and riders including thousands more in strapping crews, volunteers and spectators. Inspired by endurance rides in the US, the inception of the Quilty Cup ride was nurtured by Queenslanders Erica and RM Williams who loved their distance riding. The Quilty was named after RM’s old mate Tom Quilty of

QUILTY - THE MAN

Endurance riders will be put to the test when they tackle the 2013 Tom Quilty Gold Cup course at Kilkivan in Queensland this month.

Spring Vale Station in the Kimberley Ranges of WA, donated the gold cup. The challenge was to ride 100 miles in 24 hours - these days it’s 160kilometres. Each year the Quilty is held in a different state - last year it was in Tasmania - won by Brook Sample on Brookleigh Excalibur in 9hr, 14 min and 16 sec. This year’s five leg track runs along local roads and through

private property allowing riders to take in the amazing views and terrain that the Kilkivan region has to offer. Kilkivan is gearing up for a week-long festival being June 3, featuring trade stalls to live entertainment from local bands the `Albrechts and `Saddleblues. To register as a volunteer or to find out more about this event go to the website at www.kilkivanquilty.com

Tom Quilty, a great horseman and cattleman in the Kimberly area of Western Australia was approached by RM Williams for his support for the 100 miles ride and Quilty donated $1000. This was used to make a gold cup, the prize for the winner of the event. This is a perpetual trophy, and the ride was named the Tom Quilty Gold Cup in his honour. The original Gold Cup now resides in the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, in Longreach.

QUILTY - THE RACE The 2013 Tom Quilty ride will start at midnight on Friday, June 7. Prior to the start of the Quilty each horse will have a pre-ride check by the vet team to ensure all are fit to take part in the ride. Horses are also individually checked at the start and at the end of each leg. All competitors have 24 hours to complete the 160 kilometre track.

The Horse Report

How do you treat a coughing horse? By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Coughing horses are extremely frustrating to treat due to the complex factors involved in the cause of the disease. Therefore, a simple `cure’ is difficult to obtain. The problem usually begins with a sudden explosive onset of coughing, nasal discharge and a temperature. The horse is usually sick – dull, depressed, and off their food. This presentation is due to an acute infection either with a respiratory virus or a primary or secondary bacterial infection. This phase of the disease process can be treated with specific antibacterial agents and a favourable response anticipated. Unfortunately, these acute episodes often cause significant tissue damage to the mucosa lining the upper and lower respiratory tract. It is this damage that may perpetuate an acute infection into a chronic cough. In order to understand how this

damage results in chronic coughing, it is necessary to look at the normal defence mechanism of the respiratory tract. With every breath the horse takes, 8-12 litres of air passes through the nostrils, upper airways then into the lower airways and lungs. This air is contaminated with dust particles, pollen, environmental pollutants, fungal spores (moulds) and bacteria. Naturally, these contaminants must be filtered and removed from the body before the air enters the lower airways. Given that the horse breathes at 16-20 times per minute, there is a large quantity of contaminants that must be removed. The normal horse has billions of tiny hairs (cilia) lining the internal surface of the airways. Coated with mucous, these act as a trap to catch, filter out and collect the tiny foreign particles inhaled. The cilia then expel the mucous and contained particles up the tract and into the throat using a wave-like motion.

There is no quick fix to treating a coughing horse due to the complexity of the reasons behind the cough.

From the throat the mucous is expelled either through the mouth or the nostrils. However, should this filtration process fail, contaminants are carried into the lower airways with every breath and establish infection or disease. These factors result in constriction of the bronchioles in the lower airway which potentiates the chronic cough situation. The cough is the physical attempt by the animal to get rid of this discharge. There is also an immune component to the lower airway defence mechanism. This involves both a cellular defence mechanism and specific antibody production. The cellular defence consists of certain types of white blood cells that engulf the foreign particles and or infectious agents. Other white blood cells produce antibodies that combat foreign particles and infectious agents. Should the physical filtration and immune defences fail the net result is the development of chronic lower airway disease and chronic coughing. However, of more significance than an absence of immune reaction is the development of immune over - reaction or hypersensitivity. Many horses become sensitised to some of the particles inhaled including pollens, fungal spores and dust. They become allergic to the actual material deposited in their airways. The allergic reaction to the dust or pollens further results in an inflammatory reaction potentiates the coughing. The final

problem in low airway inflammatory disease is the development of secondary bacterial infections in the material accumulating in the lower respiratory system. This infection continues to exacerbate the inflammation and coughing. Successful treatment of the coughing horse is extremely difficult and can result from a combination of two factors: 1) Elimination of the causal factors 2) Repair of the body defence mechanisms Elimination of the casual factors is very difficult. Chronic coughing is rarely due to a primary infection. Therefore treatment with antibiotics will not cure the disease unless the other contributing factors are eliminated or controlled. The problem is that the horse is continually inhaling particles that challenge the already damaged defence system. The best we can do is attempt to reduce the levels of contaminating material in the air. Therefore avoidance of dust is essential. Arenas should be sprayed with water before working the horse. Once environmental factors have been considered, medical treatments for chronic coughing must be discussed. Appropriate antibiotic therapy is necessary in the initial stages to target the secondary bacterial infection present. Products outlined in this article are available to modify and temper the exaggerated and severe inflammatory reaction. Continued Page 15

The Horse Report Identifying the cough cause will determine treatment From page 14

This results in a reduction in contamination and discharge present and creates a healthier environment in the lower airways. This allows the body's natural repair systems to restore the restore the normal respiratory defence mechanisms. Treatment must continue long enough to allow proper healing to take place. It will only be successful if the body is able to repair the tissues. In most cases the time period may be prolonged and the course of treatment can be very expensive. 1) ANTIBIOTICS - Appropriate courses of antibiotics are necessary initially to control the secondary bacterial infection. 2) BRONCHODILATORS These are drugs that relax the spasm of the smooth muscle in the walls of the lower airways and prevent constriction. The airways are opened up and there is better movement and elimination of inflammatory discharges. This relaxation also counteracts

some of the local irritation in the tissues and reduces the inflammatory response. The best example of this mechanism of action is the use of ventolin for human asthmatics. 3) MUCOLYTICS - These drugs break down, liquefy, and dissolve the exudates and accumulated material and allow it to be expelled easily. 4) ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES These drugs are very important as they temper the severity of the inflammatory response. The amount of discharge and reaction that occurs is reduced and eventually a more favourable environment for healing is created. They also counteract the effects of allergy. Treatment and management of horses with chronic coughs is, therefore, very difficult and the likelihood of an initial and complete cure is not high. Owners should contact their veterinarian for a thorough examination and evaluation of the horse. This may entail endoscopic examination and possibly sampling of the lower airways.

Rugs are more than just accessories Rugs are such a common item that many owners almost `take them for granted but it is crucially important that they should fit your horse safely and securely so they stay put on all day long. They should fit snugly. Rugs that are too tight or too loose can cause rubbing and irritation to you horse’s shoulders, hips and wither. hey can be dangerous to your horse’s safety, particularly if they are too large. Each rug size varies by three inches (7.5cm) in length. To measure your horse for the correct size, measure from the middle of the chest, in a straight line, to the rear of the rump where your rug ends as shown in the diagram A.

A

If your measurement is between sizes then it is safer for your horse if you take the smaller size. How to fit your horse rug Place the rug over the lower part of the horse’s neck, in front of the shoulders. Slide the rug backwards until the neck seam of the rug lies along the line of the horse’s shoulder and forward of the wither. Rugs should sit comfortably around the shoulder but not put pressure on, or pull back on, the shoulders. At the back of the rug, the top of the tail flap (where the tail flap joins to the rug) should be sitting at the top of the horse’s tail. Problems of poor fitting rugs •Horses are not happy in rugs that fit poorly •A rug that is too big around the neck is

more likely to cause rubbing than one that is too small. It places additional pressure on the shoulders and increases the chance of the rug slipping. The neckline of the rug should sit in line with the horse’s shoulder. •A rug that is too big may hang too low on your horse and they may stand on it when they get to their feet after sleeping or rolling. •If surcingles are left too long, the horse’s leg may get caught , causing serious injury to the horse or damage to your rug. Ensure only one hand’s width between the surcingles strap and the horse’s belly. •Often in winter, rugs are removed less regularly and have more bulk and weight to them. This can cause some horses to get rubbed out shoulders. Ensure rugs are snug fitting and try to remove and replace rugs at least once a day to minimise rubbing. •Broader or stockier breeds of horse may need a rug size slightly bigger than the A-B measurement from chest to rump, to accommodate the wider shoulders and chest of the horse. •Finer or more angular breeds of horse may need a rug size slightly smaller than the A-B measurement from chest to rump, to ensure the rug is not too big around the shoulders and to avoid the rug slipping behind the wither and causing soreness and rubbing.

Pulse Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) Pulse Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) is now available in Australia. It is used for treating horses with muscle soreness, injuries, strains, pre competition conditioning and post competition recovery. The results after a half hour treatment are extraordinary. PEMF works by admitting an electro magnetic pulse that penetrates 30 to 45 centimetres into every muscle, tendon, ligament and bone to increase healing of injuries and decreasing recovery time by half of that if it was not used. It acts on the ions in the cells which causes them to proliferate and increase flow of nutrients towards injured areas, it also improves oxygen uptake in the muscle by up to 200 percent which decreases production of lactic acid therefore decreasing pain in the horse enabling it to perform at a higher level. To learn more about this therapy visit: www.pemf.co.nz or for a 1/2 hour treatment contact Viv on 0427 577 097 or 07 3374 4035.

Utilising Natural Therapies for horses By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist The term `Natural Therapies’ refers to the use of a group of five nutrients and substances with medicinal action, which are found in nature. These five groups are vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids and herbs. They are also found in animal feed, however in natural therapy these groups are often used in doses or concentrations much higher than that found in food. Feeds such as lucerne and red clover are considered as herbs and while many herbs have useful medicinal action, other herbs can also be toxic in high doses. However, one of the major arguments for the advocacy of natural medicine for both animals and humans is the overall safety and low toxicity of natural substances. There has been much argument among doctors, vets, dietitians, nutritionists, trainers, etc. regarding the need for vitamin and mineral supplementation. Some argue that a nutrient dosage, as found in a 'good' diet or in a standard 'racing feed regime', is enough because it meets the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs) of vitamins and minerals needed for optimal nutrition and health. However, most of these recommendations tend to be based on only one publication, the National Research Council (an American publication) book Nutrient Requirements of Horses, a 1989 publication. At the same time it is generally accepted, for example, that mineral electrolyte supplementation is necessary for horses after heavy exercise stress and sweating. Horse owners and professionals are using supplements in an unsystematic way, without a clear understanding of their therapeutic uses. Recommended Daily Allowances for humans or animals do not take into account the individual specific needs or circumstances. They also do not take into consideration other conditions such as stress, disease, injury or genetic status. This is known as biochemical individuality and there is a huge number of instances and individuals where an increased dosage, ie. a therapeutic dosage, of a vitamin, mineral or amino acid can be effective. Many horses have digestive absorption problems. These problems may be lifelong, during early growth only, or during certain kinds of stress. For example, malabsorption commonly occurs with iron, calcium, and vitamin B12. Page 20

Digestive absorption of five key natural elements can be crucial to a horse’s health and wellbeing.

Often supplementation with a therapeutic dose will help the situation but also vital is the form of the supplementation. 'Iron is not iron', 'calcium is not calcium' this means that how a nutrient is delivered to the horse's gut is vital. It's not just what is ingested that's important, but how well it is absorbed and utilized after absorption. For example, iron is difficult to absorb in any form. Often the cheapest available form is the most poorly absorbed. Iron may be delivered as a specific inorganic salt; as an inorganic salt complex; as an organic salt or as amino acid chelates. Wherever possible, it is better to choose those quality ingredients, which have been shown to be the best absorbed. Horses display individual temperaments that often predispose them to an increased need for therapeutic nutrient dosages. Horses prone to anxiety, fear or muscle cramps may benefit from supplementation. Such symptoms may be linked together and are often alleviated by therapeutic doses of nutrients such as vitamin B1, B3, B6, magnesium phosphate, amino acids such as glutamic acid and L-tryptophan, and certain calming herbs. Many of the five groups of nutrients, which are vital for normal health, become even more essential for optimal recovery from stress and injury. Stress is a wide term that can refer to the metabolic and nervous depletion associated with intense exercise experienced by high level performance horses, or it could refer to the emotional/environmental stress associated with unfamiliar situations, travel, diet

and injury. As mentioned earlier, therapeutic doses of mineral electrolytes and natural sedatives are often very useful for recovery and prevention of both forms of stress. In both acute traumatic and chronic inflammatory conditions, wide ranges of therapeutic nutrients are very useful. Usually single nutrient therapy, unlike synthetic drugs, has limited use in therapy. It has been found that such nutrients are more effective when taken with other complementary substances. The therapeutic effect of a particular mineral is often enhanced by the presence of another specific mineral or group of vitamins. This complementary enhancement of action within a group of nutrients is known as synergy and this is a principle only recently recognized and understood by nutritionists and clinical biochemists. Naturopaths have long recognized this principle by observation, and use it to explain the usually gentle, safe action of whole herbs compared to the potent action and unbalancing side-effects of isolated, synthesized herbal alkaloids, such as aspirin (originally obtained in a complex from black willow bark), digitalis (originally isolated from the foxglove flower), and quinine (isolated from cinchona bark). As side effects, aspirin can cause gastritis, gastroenteritis and stomach ulcers. Digitalis can cause gastric disturbances and heart arrhythmias, and quinine can cause ringing in the ears, nausea and deafness. The most commonly used pain relief drug is Phenylbutazone. Focus on prevention before treatment  From page

The following information was taken from a drug book for humans and has been adapted to provide only those side effects likely to affect a horse, these side effects none the less can occur in both humans and horses, particularly with long term use. Mild side effects (may disappear during treatment, see your vet if troublesome or persistent) abdominal discomfort or fullness, swollen salivary glands, fatigue, sweating, fluid retention, swelling of joints, thirst, mild allergic skin rash, itching. Injection: local pain, irritation or muscle damage. Phenylbutazone causes bone marrow suppression with high doses or prolonged administration. More serious: fever, mouth ulcers, persistent infections, ulcer or inflammation of the stomach lining, with stomach pain around feed time. N.B. ulcer pain may be absent because of the pain relief known for its ability during long term therapy (very common in treating horses) to severely depress production of white cells which are necessary for the body's defense against infection. If ever in doubt please contact your vet. Disease and infection are also stress problems. The body undergoes stress, as

Antoinette Foster’s book Eat Like A Horse is a guide to natural, cost effective feeding as well as good animal husbandry.

increased metabolism is demanded in a local area, as in a wound infection, or throughout the whole body, as in fever. Increased blood flow is usually demanded by inflammation, together with increased detoxification of pathogens and toxins by white blood cells, accelerated liver function, and perspiration. In these cases, increased dosage of a particular combination of therapeutic nutrients is very useful to produce the body's own inflammatory-mediating substances such as cortisone's and

enkephalins. When treating with Natural Therapies there is an emphasis on natural substances. No synthetic chemical substances are used; all ingredients can be found in nature, in the human and animal body, or in food and plants. However, some biochemical ingredients are produced in a laboratory including vitamin C, several B group vitamins, and amino acids, however as a horse owner you should always request BP grade. There is a focus on the whole combination rather than the individual ingredient- Synergy. There is a focus on the anergic biological activity of each ingredient and the form in which it can best be absorbed by the gut, rather than one crude but often pure high gram doses. For example tissue salts which have been microfined by ultrafine grinding and dispersed through a lactose carrier (known as trituration). It must be noted that pure chemical substances are often not as well absorbed and metabolized by the horse, compared to many organic complexes containing actual lower concentrations of a specific mineral. Perhaps this is because the minerals and vitamins found in animal food are not found in a purified form, but rather in com-

plex organic molecules or complex solutions. There is a focus on prevention before treatment. It is now clear that if a horse experiences stress whether facing a possible viral infection, competing too heavily as a twoyear-old, about to travel on a long float trip, or is just very nervous - either way, therapeutic nutrient dosing can prevent problems before they occur. This involves achieving optimum nutrition for the individual. Optimum nutrition means achieving the right mix and amount of nutrients necessary for peak health and stress prevention. This is an ideal and obviously difficult to access since it varies with the individual and specific circumstances. However, clinical biochemists are now suggesting some Recommended Optimal Allowances (ROAs) instead of RDAs. Natural Therapy allows the horse owner to treat the whole horse not just the ailment and to treat by using preventative measures, on a long-term basis. Achieving optimum health is the key to a longer life. For a free diet analysis, please visit the following internet link www.hiform.com.au/Equine_Q uestionnaire.html

Dalby Horse and Pony Sale

LIVESTOCK AUCTION TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE CHAPTER ONE - PRELIMINARY 1. (a) A vendor is bound by these terms and con ditions by offering livestock for sale by auction. (b) An agent (which includes an auctioneer) is bound by these terms and conditions by conducting an auction sale. (c) A buyer is bound by these terms and conditions by bidding at auction. 2. (a) In these terms the expression auctioneer, agent, buyer and vendor respectively includes the servants, contractors, agents of each of them. The auctioneer, agent, buyer and vendor shall be wholly responsible for the acts and omissions of their respective servants, contractors and agents. The term “auctioneer” includes, so far as the law and context permits, the vendor’s agent. (b) When used in these terms the expressions “companion animals” means all animals originating from a property on a particular day. Where lots are split and sent to multiple establishments, then all of these animals shall be regarded as companions. 3. The following applies in interpreting these terms and conditions: (a) The following words have the following meanings: Fees means all levies, charges, fees, costs and other expenses incurred or relating to these terms and conditions and the sale and purchase of livestock including, without limitation, transaction levies, yard and weigh dues, cartage, advertising and rebates, and whether paid for, or incurred, by the agent; Livestock means animals auctioned pursuant to these terms and conditions; Price means the amount at which the lot has been sold to the buyer referred to in clause 7 of these terms and conditions (i) plus any Fees and other expenses incurred in relation to the purchase of livestock that are payable by the buyer; and ii) plus any GST added in accordance with clause 12. (b) These terms and conditions are subject to legislation or regulation in the State in which the auction is conducted and in the event of any conflict then the legislation or regulation will prevail. The provisions of these terms and conditions are in addition to, and do not derogate from, the duties and rights of vendors, agents and buyers set out in legislation and regulation in the State in which the auction is conducted. CHAPTER TWO - STANDARD TERMS OF SALE 4. Subject to any reserve price, and to the right, prior to the fall of the hammer, of the vendor to withdraw any lot without declaring the reserve, the highest bidder shall be the buyer. 5. The auctioneer has the right to bid on behalf of the vendor provided that right is notified prior to the commencement of the sale and is subject to State law. 6. A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer unless, in accordance with clause 8. the auctioneer decides to put the lot up again. 7. The last price called by the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer shall be the amount at which the lot has been sold. 8. In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer is the sole arbitrator of the successful bidder or

Page 32

the auctioneer may decide to put the lot up again. The auctioneer’s decision is final. 9. The auctioneer may refuse to accept any bid which, in the auctioneer’s opinion, is not in the best interests of the vendor and need not give reasons for doing so. The minimum bid for liveweight selling is 0.2 of a cent ($0.002). 10. A bidder shall be deemed to be a principal unless, prior to bidding, the bidder has given to the auctioneer a copy of written authority to bid for or on behalf of another person. 11. The successful bidder at a livestock auction sale must give to the auctioneer at the fall of the hammer: (a) the purchaser’s name; or (b) the bid card number which identifies the purchaser; or (c) the name of the person on whose behalf the successful bid was made; and (d) the Property Identification Code (known as the “PIC”) of destination. 12. The auction shall be conducted on the basis that the bid price shall be exclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST shall be added after the fall of the hammer for those sales subject to GST. 13. As soon as practicable after the fall of the hammer, the buyer shall if requested by the agent, sign the agreement for sale. 14. If a buyer does not comply with any of these terms and conditions, which includes the requirements of State law, any livestock knocked down to that buyer may be re-sold by public auction or private contract in whatever lots and manner the auctioneer decides. The re-sale may be with or without notice and shall be at the buyer’s risk. The buyer is responsible for all loss and expense arising out of a re-sale and is not entitled to any resulting profit. 15. The buyer of livestock must pay the agent the full amount of the purchase price in immediate funds on receipt of a tax invoice. Payment is required prior to delivery unless some other time for payment is specified in a written agree ment between the buyer and the auctioneer that was made before the fall of the hammer. 16. No person may bid unless, prior to the com mencement of the sale, that person has made arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for payment for livestock purchased. If bids in breach of this condition are inadvertently accepted, delivery shall not be given until the purchase money is paid and any law, rule or practice to the contrary is accordingly negatived as far as possible. 17. (a) Cattle sold on a liveweight basis that are weighed pre-sale are at the risk and expense of the buyer upon the fall of the hammer. (b) Cattle sold on a liveweight basis that are weighed post-sale are at the risk and expense of the buyer immediately after weighing. (c) All livestock other than cattle sold on a liveweight basis are at the risk and expense of the buyer upon the fall of the hammer. 18. (a) Subject to this clause the sale is complete on the fall of the hammer. (b) The time for rejection is the time com mencing at the fall of the hammer and ending at the first of: (i) delivery is taken by a representative of the buyer; (ii) departure of the animal from the pur chaser’s delivery pen; or (iii) one hour after the last animal is: a. in the case of pre-sale weighing, sold; or

b. in the case of post-sale weighing, weighed. (c) During the time for rejection the buyer may reject any animal which is lame, blind or diseased where that condition existed prior to the fall of the hammer but could not be reasonably observed when the animal was in the selling pen. (d) If the purchaser rejects an animal during the time for rejection then the sale of that animal is cancelled and the animal is returned to the vendor or sold at such price as the purchaser and the agent may agree. (e) This sub-clause applies only to cattle which are sold in Queensland at auction for slaughter. The agent has responsibility for the prevention of loss or escape (but not death, sickness or injury) of those cattle from the time of the fall of the hammer, through delivery to and from the scales, to the buyer’s delivery pen and on to the buyer’s nominated transport. This responsibility ends at the earlier of those cattle boarding the buyer’s nominated transport or sunset on the day after the sale. This sub-clause does not apply if the agent makes an announcement to that effect prior to sale. 19.(a) Subject to the right of rejection in Clause 18, all conditions and warranties expressed or implied by law are hereby excluded from the sale to the extent that the law allows. All lots are open for inspection prior to the commencement of the sale and are sold with all faults, if any. No compensation shall be given for any faults, imperfections, errors of description, number in or of any lots sold or otherwise. (b) Any claim or objection arising out of an error or misdescription in the provision of relevant information in terms of legislation or regulation concerning the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) must be made by 5:00pm on the seventh day after the fall of the hammer. No objection, requisition or claim against the vendor or agent in respect of such error or misdescription can be made after that time. (c) Any statements made by the vendor or the auctioneer whether in writing or orally to the effect that any female has been pregnancy tested or scanned positive shall mean and require only that a certificate in writing shall be supplied to the buyer signed by a qualified veterinary surgeon or certified scanner certifying that the said female has been tested or scanned on the date specified in the certificate and that in the opinion of the surgeon or scanner the female was pregnant on that date. (d) For cattle, the agent undertakes to make every reasonable effort to ensure that any NLIS cattle device number is transferred from the saleyard account to the purchaser’s account on the NLIS database no later than midnight on the day of the sale. (e) Where livestock have a food safety or market eligibility status derived from the NVD and/or the NLIS/ERP database, the agent will inform the buyers by presale catalogue in conjunction with vendor branding and/or announce the status prior to the offering of those lots. 20. If delivery is made to, or possession obtained by, the buyer or its representative before full payment of the Price, then until full payment is received, the buyer:

(a) does not acquire title to the livestock; (b) holds the livestock as bailee only for the vendor; (c) must act in a fiduciary capacity in its relation ship with the vendor; (d) must store the stock separately or so that they are readily distinguishable from other livestock owned by the buyer; (e) is responsible for the safety and well being of the livestock; (f) may make a bona fide sale for market value of any or all of the livestock. As between the buyer and the subsequent buyer, the sale shall be made by the buyer in its own name and not as agent for the vendor, however as between the vendor and buyer, the sale shall be made as bailee and agent for the vendor; and (g) must keep and account for the proceeds of any subsequent sale separately from its other money and hold those proceeds, together with the benefits of any rights against subsequent buyers, on trust for the vendor. 21. In addition to clause 20, if payment is not made according to clause 15, but delivery has been made to, or possession obtained by, the buyer or its rep resentative: (a) The vendor or its agent may repossess and resell the livestock and enter property owned or occupied by the buyer or its representative if necessary to do so; and (b) Interest may be charged at the rate usually charged by the agent for overdue accounts on any amounts which remain owing at any time. 22. The buyer may not make any claim against the vendor for actions by the vendor or its agent under clauses 20 or 21 and indemnifies the vendor and its agent against any loss, damage, costs, expenses, penalties, fines or claims suffered by the vendor, the agent or any person or entity arising from the vendor exercising its rights under clauses 20 or 21. 23.1. Clause 23 applies whenever the agent pays the vendor before being paid by the buyer, which the agent is not bound to do. The agent is then the del credere agent of the vendor at law. 23.2. The vendor hereby gives notice to the buyer of the assignments referred to in clause 23.3. When this clause applies, in addition to any rights of the agent that arise by operation of the law, the parties agree that, subject to clause 23.6 the agent is subrogated to all rights of the vendor under these terms and conditions against the buyer. 23.4. Title to the livestock does not pass to the agent or a nominee of the agent unless the agent, by written notice to the vendor, notifies the vendor that it is to be transferred to the agent or a nomi nee of the agent. 23.5. The vendor acknowledges that the agent may take enforcement, repossession or other action to recover any livestock for which the buyer has not paid in full, or the Price of such livestock, owing by the buyer under these terms and conditions: (a) when this clause does not apply, as agent of the vendor (including by reselling the livestock); and (b) when this clause applies, on the agent’s own behalf exercising the rights of the vendor by subrogation or assignment under these terms and conditions (whether in the vendor’s name or not) and, where title to the livestock has not passed to the agent, by selling the livestock as agent of the vendor without the agent having to account to the vendor for the proceeds of sale. 23.6. The agent may at any time, assign, transfer securitise or otherwise dispose of all or any of its rights under these terms and conditions and any debts created pursuant to it (including, without limitation, the rights assigned to it under clause 23.3). * continued page 29

LIVESTOCK AUCTION TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE 23.7. The vendor hereby irrevocably appoints the agent as the vendor’s attorney to: (a) do at any time and in any manner as the agent thinks fit all acts necessary or desirable to per fect or improve the rights and interests afforded, or intended to be afforded, to the agent under these terms and conditions; and (b) appoint one or more sub-attorneys to do any thing that the agent may do as the vendor’s attorney. 23.8. These terms and conditions do not render the agent liable to the buyer as vendor nor entitle the buyer to set off against the agent any right the buyer may have against the vendor or otherwise. 23.9. The buyer acknowledges that the provisions of this clause 23 are intended solely for the benefit of the agent (and its assigns) and the vendor. The lia bilities and obligations of the buyer will not be in any way affected: (a) by this clause 23, other than as it expressly provides; or (b) by the failure of the agent or the vendor or either of them to comply with the terms of this clause 23. 23.10.The buyer must pay all amounts payable to the vendor or the agent under these terms and conditions without any deduction, withholding, set off or counterclaim whatsoever, whether the benefit of a deduction, withholding, set off or counterclaim is alleged to exist in favour of the buyer as against the vendor or the agent in any capacity whatsoever or any other person including any assignor of the vendor’s or the buyer’s interests under these terms and conditions. 24. (a) The agent agrees that he is liable to pay to the vendor the Price, less such commission as is agreed between the vendor and the agent, and in the absence of any agreement such amount as is reasonable, and less the Fees that are payable by the vendor that were incurred by the agent on behalf of the vendor in relation to the sale of the livestock. (b) In the event that the buyer pays the Price or part of it direct to the vendor then the agent has no liability to the vendor for the amount of such payment. Further, if the agent pays the vendor any amount which the buyer also pays direct to the vendor in respect of the same live stock, then the vendor must repay the agent that amount and the agent may debit that amount to an account held in the name of the vendor by the agent. (c) Regardless of whether or not a sale has occurred the agent may, but is not under oblig ation so to do, instead of deducting payments owed to it by the vendor, debit the amount of the commission and fees to an account held in the name of the vendor by the agent. 25. The auctioneer has been retained by the vendor as auctioneer for the purpose of selling the livestock comprised in the lots. The terms of engagement between the auctioneer and the vendor do not extend to the provision of advice by the auctioneer to the vendor in relation to the safety or otherwise of the sale ring, the saleyards and the surrounding environments.

CHAPTER THREE – VENDOR WARRANTY FOR CORRECT PRESENTATION AND DECLARATION 26. This chapter applies only in the case of livestock and their companion animals sold at auction for slaughter when the buyer is the slaughterer and the livestock are transported direct from the sale yard to the meatworks at which they are slaughtered. This chapter does not apply if the buyer is a trader who subsequently resells the livestock to a slaughterer. A slaughterer is any person who pays the AMPC Processor levy. 27. The warranty of a vendor is that livestock and their companion animals offered for sale at auction: (a) pass AQIS and other regulatory authority requirements and inspections at the time of slaughter; (b) are of merchantable quality; (c) carry an NLIS device in accordance with State law; (d) in the case where a representation has been made in the pre-sale catalogue that the livestock have particular characteristics or are fit for a particular purpose or market, and such repre sentations are based on information in the National Vendor Declaration, the livestock will have those characteristics or will be fit for the particular purpose or market; and (e) all information in any National Vendor Declaration provided by the vendor is true, complete and correct in all material respects. 28. In the event of a breach by the vendor of the ven dor’s warranty and provided such breach is notified by the buyer to the agent by 5:00pm on the 7th day after the fall of the hammer then the buyer is not liable to pay the portion of the Price of such of the vendor’s livestock to which the breach applies. 29. However if the breach by the vendor is such that the livestock are not rejected outright but are instead downgraded then the buyer will pay the value of the livestock at their next highest and best use. 30. In the case of a breach by the vendor of the vendor’s warranty then the vendor will also be liable to the buyer for any further losses which the buyer might establish but the buyer will take all reasonable steps in co-operation with the agent and vendor to mitigate both the effect of the breach and the amount of any loss. 31. Where a sentinel animal of a lot tests positive for chemical residue, and provided such test is certified and notified as required by these vendor warranty terms, then: (a) the buyer will be entitled to delay payment for the price of all livestock in that lot; or (b) the vendor has the option, at the vendor’s cost, of collecting the companion animals and returning them to the vendor’s property; or of having the livestock slaughtered in which event the risk of further condemnations will be that of the vendor. Where product integrity is potentially jeopardised, the Processor has the right to refuse slaughter and send the livestock back to the consigning property at the vendor’s cost.

32. The auctioneer is liable to the buyer in respect of any breach of the vendor’s warranty arising out of: (a) any error, by the auctioneer, of transcription of information from the National Vendor Declaration completed by the vendor to the pre-sale catalogue or the buyers post-sale summary; (b) any failure by the auctioneer to notify the buyer, prior to bidding, of any breach by the vendor of the warranty of the vendor if the buyer establishes that the agent knew of such breach prior to the sale; and (c) any failure by the auctioneer to disclose prior to bidding, and in the pre-sale catalogue, that the vendor has failed to provide a National Vendor Declaration that is complete in all material aspects. CHAPTER FOUR - OWNERS RISK FOR CONDITION OF CATTLE 33. This chapter applies only in the case of cattle and their companion animals sold at auction for slaughter when the buyer is the slaughterer and the cattle are transported direct from the sale yard to the meatworks at which they are slaughtered. This chapter does not apply if the buyer is a trader who subsequently resells cattle to a slaughterer. A slaughterer is any person who pays the AMPC Processor levy. 34. Owners risk reflects the producer’s responsibility to provide slaughter cattle for sale that are fit for human consumption. Cattle are fit for human con sumption if they are not condemned as unfit by AQIS. Owners risk applies if the condemnation is due to a condition in the animal which the buyer establishes, by the AQIS certificate, existed prior to the fall of the hammer. 35. A buyer with the benefit of owners risk protection is not liable to pay the Price of that animal to the vendor. The buyer remains nevertheless liable for all costs incurred after the fall of the hammer in transport, slaughter, testing and disposal of the animal. 36. Owners risk protection is available to the buyer of cattle to which this chapter applies if all of the fol lowing are satisfied: (a) a certificate is issued by AQIS which states the relevant NLIS RFID tag number and PIC, the date of the certificate, the reason for condemnation and that the reason for condemnation existed prior to the fall of the hammer; (b) the certificate is received by the selling agent either in its original form or by fax by 5:00pm on the 7th day after the fall of the hammer; and (c) if the condemnation is due to chemical residue the certificate follows testing in an AQIS approved laboratory which establishes maximum residue limits in excess of the Australian limit. 37. Owners risk does not apply, and the buyer must pay for the cattle, if the reason for condemnation is any of the following: (a) bruising, (b) fever, (c) partial condemnation, or (d) emaciation.

CHAPTER FIVE - NOTICES REQUIRED BY STATE LEGISLATION NSW Legislation Property, Stock and Business Agents Act 2002 Warnings Penalties for collusive practices. It is an offence against the Property, Stock and Business Agents Act 2002 for a person to do any of the following as a result of a collusive practice, or to induce or attempt to induce another person by a collusive practice to do any of the following: (i) to abstain from bidding; or (ii) to bid to a limited extent only; or (iii) to do any other act that might prevent free and open competition. Severe penalties may be imposed on persons convicted of collusive practices. The auctioneer has the right to make one bid on behalf of the vendor if the auctioneer clearly and precisely announces that fact prior to the sale. Tasmanian Legislation The auctioneer must not appear to acknowledge a dummy bid. A buyer must not give, agree to give or offer a gift or other consideration to a person for abstaining from bidding and a person must not accept any gift or consideration for abstaining from bidding. A person must not participate in collusive practices by way of making or receiving an unlawful promise to abstain from bidding, not to bid except to a limited extent or do any other thing which may prevent free and open competition. Western Australian Legislation Auction Sales Act 1973 s31 NOTICE It is an offence to: (i) induce or attempt to induce another person to abstain from bidding by means of a promise, expressed or implied, that the other person will have the right to elect to take over as buyer or to toss or draw lots to establish who is to become the owner; (ii) abstain or agree to abstain from bidding as a result of such a promise; (iii) knowingly enter or permit or cause to be entered in the auctioneer’s record any name other than that of the actual successful bidder; (iv) enter in the auctioneer’s record the name of the buyer other than that of the actual successful bidder; or (v) in the case of successful bidder supply wrong information as to the name of the buyer to the auctioneer or to any person, firm or corpora tion on whose behalf the sale is conducted. The vendor, or any person on behalf of the vendor, or the auctioneer have the right to make no more than three bids.

The Horse Report

Young riders put skills to test at championships The AGL NSW Sporting and Campdrafting Championships were held over the weekend of April 13 - 14 April at Gloucester. The event is a great social occasion for pony club members taking part with around 300 competitors and their families travelling from all over the NSW and Queensland to camp at the grounds over the weekend. The sporting championships which was held on Saturday attracted 274 entries. Riders battled it out in a variety of races including Bending, Flag and Barrel racing.

The sporting age champions were: Under 11s - Georgia Rigby from Queensland Under 13s - Jessica McDonald from Wallsend New Lambton Pony Club in Zone 25. Under 15s - Anastasia Martin from Merriwa, Zone 7.

Under 17s - Emma Sheargold from Canberra Riding Club, Zone 16. Under 25 associate division was won by Tegan Byrnes from Queensland. The campdrafting championships, which was held on Sunday, attracted 136 competitors. In this unique event, riders demonstrated their skills at cutting a beast out of a mob in an enclosure and then manoeuvring it around a set course. The campdraft age champions were: Under 13s - Rohan Fenlon from Queensland. Under 15s - Rowena Dillion from Paterson River Pony Club in Zone 25. Under 17s - Brendon Weis from Glen Innes, Zone 13. Under 25 - Matthew Ireland from Walcha Pony Club in Zone 13. Brendon Weis, 15, and under 17 years age champion, has been riding since he joined Glen Innes Pony Club in Zone 13 at five years of age. Since then, Brandon, who enjoys all aspects of pony club, has competed in campdraft since he was 10-years-old.

This was a very special win for Brandon and his horse Joker, competing for his last year in the under 17 age group. According to Brandon’s mother, Belinda Williamson, Brandon is wise beyond his years. “Brandon understands that it is more about being happy with what he is doing then getting the ribbons,” she said. Under 25 years age champion, Matthew Ireland has also been competing since the age of four and would recommend it to anyone to get out and have a go at state level. “It’s always good to meet people and a good way to meet up with some old friends,” he said. “A big thank you to the Gloucester Pony Club for hosting it and my family for the support and help getting methis far.” The Pony Club NSW State Sporting and Campdrafting Championships is supported by naming rights sponsor AGL Energy Gloucester, Flametree Inc, Sport and Recreation a division of Communities NSW, Mitavite official feed partner, as well as other local sponsors.

The Horse Report

Rodeo action hits the Glitter Strip THE Gold Coast may not be the first place that springs to mind when it comes to rodeo but is will be the centre of the Australian rodeo world when it hosts the 2013 Jeep Gold Coast National Finals this month. Held from June 13 to 16, the NFR is four days of heart-stopping, nail-biting rodeo action at the air conditioned Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. There will be five sessions for the top 15 cowboys and cowgirls in Australia to compete in six events - Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bareback Bronc Riding, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling and Ladies Barrel Racing. The finalists have been chosen from more than 100 accredited rodeos that are held across Australia over the past 12 months. In the lead-up to the event, the Gold Coast centre is transformed into Australia’s largest indoor rodeo arena, requiring the use of 900 tonnes of dirt and a team of 40 people working 400 man hours to set up the event. Australian Professional Rodeo Association President Steve Hilton said that during the rodeo, the Convention Centre will house 85 bucking horses, 40 bucking bulls, 80 cattle used for timed events, 80 competition horses, 10 rodeo livestock producers, 50 staff who care for the animals and 15 officials who work within the arena during the rodeo. “The city will be celebrating for four days as thousands of fans

descend on the Gold Coast for the NFR which is set to showcase all the flair of a mini-Las Vegas event,” he said. “The city is an attraction of it’s own. While everyone may not be

into rodeo everyone is certainly into the Gold Coast. “If you’re going to go and watch any rodeo in the country you would not see a better rodeo. We have the very best stock in the

country and this is certainly the best location as far as facilities go.” But while the Gold Coast is renown for being Australia’s premier holiday capital, the competitors know there is a serious side to being there. Tooma’s champion saddle bronc and bull rider Brad Pierce, who is following in a proud family history in the sport knows only too well. Brad’s grandfather and father have had a long history in the sport. “There will always be people looking at you because your family has done well in the past or you have done well before,” he said. “But at the end of the day this is what I do for a job so if you do it properly and your job right you get the rewards at the end.” Starting with an evening session on Thursday, June 13, the NFR will see each session feature an introduction and grand entry of competitors followed by • Bareback Bronc Riding • Team Roping • Saddle Bronc Riding • Ladies Barrel Racing • Steer Wrestling • Bull Ride starting at 6.45pm. On Saturday, June 15, there will also be a matinee session at 12.45pm and then an evening session at 6.45pm. The grand final will be on Sunday evening. Equestrians deserve adequate and flexible insurance By BRIAN JONES* If you’re a horse owner or enthusiast, you’ll know only too well the dangers that come with being in close proximity to an animal that may weigh more than 600kg. Regardless of your horse sport of choice eventing, point to point or just hacking on bush tracks, you’ll know that the unexpected can happen in a flash. Of course, you don’t even need to be on a horse for its sheer size to cause a serious accident. Being pinned against a fence or wall, a kick or pulling back are all common causes of injury to horse handlers. Unfortunately, many providers of personal insurance such as life insurance, income protection and trauma insurance are also well aware of the dangers associated with

horse riding and consider it an unacceptable and uninsurable risk. At Make A Difference insurance, we take the view that those who are active, even in sports considered more dangerous than others, present a much lower risk for Australia’s leading causes of death - for heart disease and stroke. As such, we feel the benefits of an active lifestyle that comes with equestrian pursuits outweighs the potential dangers. As an Insurance Broker, we work with Australia’s leading Insurance Providers to find the best insurance solutions for your personal needs. We present each individual’s overall lifestyle to our insurers rather than just focusing on risks presented by an individual’s lifestyle. By taking this

approach we are able to obtain full cover for our clients in most cases. Appropriate insurance cover such as income protection, life insurance, total and permanent disability insurance and trauma cover can help to ensure that the financial impact of an accident is minimised. To find out more, please contact the team at Make A Difference Insurance on 1300 799 839 or via our website at www. madinsurance.com.au 0*Brian Jones is the Managing Director of Make A Difference Insurance and has over 13 years in the personal insurance industry. New advice available about vaccine Biosecurity Queensland is urging horse owners to be aware of new advice regarding the Hendra virus vaccine. Chief Biosecurity Officer Dr Jim Thompson, said recent data evaluated by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority showed that the vaccine offered protection to horses for a period of up to six months. “Research is continuing to determine if the vaccine will provide protection against Hendra virus for up to 12 months,” he said. “"Changes have also been made around the timing of the second dose. “When the vaccine was first made available late last year there were strict requirements on the timing of the second vaccination. “Further research means that the second dose can now be administered anytime between three to six weeks after the first dose. “Vaccination is the single most effective way to reduce the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses and Biosecurity Queensland encourages horse owners to have their horses vaccinated.

Steps to reducing the risk of Hendra virus:

New advice on Hendra virus vaccination is now available from Biosecurity Queensland.

“However horse owners shouldn't become complacent, even after vaccination. “We still recommend the use of good personal hygiene and biosecurity measures when working with horses, regardless of their vaccination status.” Horse owners should discuss vaccination with their veterinarian, and they should familiarise themselves with other measures to reduce the risk of Hendra virus infection in Biosecurity Queensland's updated Information for Horse Owners Pack at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au

Talk to your veterinarian about vaccinating your horse against Hendra virus. Horse feed and water containers should be removed from under trees. If possible, place feed and water containers under a shelter. Owners should inspect and identify flowering/fruiting trees on their property. Horses should be removed from paddocks where flowering/fruiting trees are attracting flying foxes. Horses should be returned only after the trees have stopped flowering/fruiting and the flying foxes have gone. If horses cannot be removed from the paddock, consider fencing (temporary or permanent) to restrict access to flowering/ fruiting trees. Clean up any fruit debris underneath the trees before returning horses. If it is not possible to remove horses from paddocks, try to temporarily remove your horses during times of peak flying fox activity (usually at dusk and during the night). Ensure that sick horses are isolated from other horses, people and animals until a veterinarian's opinion is obtained. If there is more than one horse on your property, handle unaffected horses first and then only handle sick horses after taking appropriate precautions. Make sure gear exposed to any body fluids from horses is cleaned and disinfected before it is used on another horse. This includes halters, lead ropes and twitches. Talk to your veterinarian about which cleaning agents and disinfectants to use. When cleaning contaminated equipment from a sick horse, wear gloves, cover any cuts or grazes and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. It is essential that horse owners practise good biosecurity and not travel with, work on or take sick horses to other properties or equestrian events. Do not allow visiting horse practitioners (e.g. farriers) to work on sick horses. Seek veterinary advice before bringing any sick horse onto your property. For more information on Hendra virus, call 13 25 23.

Brisbane Ekka has special vaccination offer for equestrians The Royal National Association has advised competitors and participants to this year’s Ekka in Brisbane that there is a special offer on Hendra vaccination for any horse that nominates for the show. Equine Veterinarians Australia and Zoetis have combined to offer the following recommended pricing for horses that nominate. To enable exhibitors to take up this offer, the closing date for horse competitions has been extended to Friday, June 7. Unvaccinated Horses For horses attending the Ekka this year that are not currently Hendra vaccinated, the recommended pricing is $110 for the first dose (including microchip if required) and $35 for the second dose, including GST. Vaccinated Horses For horses that are due for a six-month booster prior to Ekka, the recommended pricing is $55 per dose. This year’s Ekka is going to be a Hendra-free zone, with all horses needing to be vaccinated against the virus before arriving on-site. With the well-documented risks of Hendra virus to both humans and horses, this is the safest policy for competitors and the public. How it Works For competing horses: To enter your horse in the Ekka competition, you must supply a microchip number at the Page 38

time of entry - Friday, June 7. If you require a microchip, follow these steps: Visit your participating vet and receive your first dose of vaccine, and microchip, before June 7. Nominate by the closing date, you will receive your entries confirmation. When you return to receive your second dose of vaccine, give the vet a copy of your entries confirmation. Recommended pricing should apply. For six month boosters due prior to the Ekka, please ignore step 1, but steps 2, 3 and

4 still apply. An entries confirmation will need to be given to the participating vet. If you already have a microchip, follow these steps: Enter your horse and provide your microchip number by June 7. You will receive your entries confirmation which you will need to present at participating vets to receive the discounted vaccination. Ensure your horse receives its first vaccination no later than 42 days prior to arrival at the showgrounds. For non-competing horses Contact Wendy Gow at the RNA and provide your horse’s microchip number. Email contact: wgow@rna.org.au The RNA will provide you with an Official Confirmation Letter (confirming your attendance at the 2013 Ekka) Present your letter at participating vets to receive your discounted vaccination. Conditions: • First dose must be administered at least 42 days prior to your due date for arrival at the RNA Showgrounds • 6-month boosters must be administered by July 31 • Your entries confirmation or official confirmation letter (for non-competing horses) must be given to the participating vet.

Take pleasure from riding without pressure Would you enjoy riding your horse with a relaxed social group ? Do you want to explore new places with your horse, ride on the beach or in a parade ? Do you want to try camping with your horse ? If any of these sound like your kind of riding then come and join the Mudgeeraba and Hinterland Horse Trail Club (affiliated with Trail Riding Australia). The club welcomes riders of all abilities, ages and with any type

of horse. It is based on the Gold Coast and holds day rides once a month, plus camps. These are in different locations from the beach at Fingal on The Tweed Coast, through rainforests at Tallebudgera, bush trails at Mudgeeraba, Nerang State

Forest and on a large property at Mundoolin (Canungra) Rides average about four hours plus a lunch stop along the way. Riders either take a saddlebag lunch, or they stop at a restaurant or café. Family and friends are encouraged to join riders for lunch.

Participants don’t need to become a member of the club to ride and can join any of rides for just $20 per day. Membership is $65 per adult and $55 per junior. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month at the new clubhouse at Gilston and all are welcome. So give trail riding a go and ride for pleasure not for show. Call 0498 682 018 , visit the website at www.horsetrailclub.com.au or find us on Facebook.

Horses hit the beach for race day When you think of beach sprints, you usually think of lifesavers but at Mackay Harbour, the concept will take on a whole new meaning in August. Described as `the most unique horse racing event in Australia’, the picturesque harbour will host the second annual Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival from August 15 -18. The four day event will feature the marquee event, the Mackay Harbour Beach Race day with a crowd of more than 10,000 expected to be on the beach cheering home their favourite horses. But it’s not all about the racing, with Live Latin, Mexican and Caribbean bands playing throughout the day, creating a real carnival atmosphere. Add to this Fashions on the Field competitions (junior and senior), multi-cultural food court and a wine bar plus a dedicated kids entertainment area and it is

a total family event. Held at the Mackay Harbour Beach, the expansive tide and firm flat beach makes a very safe and fun event to enter. The racing card will feature 12 horse races from three separate

Tassiriki Ranch Horse Riding & Holiday Cabins

categories competing at a meeting that boasts in excess of $30,000 cash and prices. It’s an open meeting which means you can enter any type of horse and any rider. The three categories include three races for Thoroughbreds over 600m, three races for Quarter horses over 400ms and three races for `Any Other

Breeds’ over 350m. The first and second horse from each race will advance to a final in each category. The three Group 1 Broo Beach Classics (the names of the category finals) will each pay $5000 cash to the winners. If the glowing reports from last year’s entrants are an indication, the 2013 event will see entrants come from all over to be a part of the excitement. Event organizer Mick Pope said he was very excited about the addition of the three separate categories. “I think it will really make a level playing field for all competitors and I love the idea that the prize money is being spread around,” he said. This year the entrants will be invited to a `Calling of the Cards’ function leading up to the race day and win or lose, every competitor will take home a special commemorative key ring. If you want more info on the event or nomination forms, visit the website at www.mackaybeachhorseracing.com.au

The beach at Mackay Harbour will be transformed into a race track for the annual beach horse racing festival. Page 40

Invest time on horsemanship skills By MEREDITH RANSLEY So many times we come across people who want help with their horse. Maybe they are coming across training or safety issues or relationship ones or even just feel that they aren't achieving all that they could be with their horse - and yet they are for whatever reason, reluctant to take the time or to invest some money into improving their horsemanship skills. It seems a shame that these days, we are so fixated on getting instant results or gratification in whatever it is that we are doing that we have lost the patience and desire to get things right or do things really well. With horses, it seems an easier option to send your horse to the trainer to be fixed, than to take the time to raise our skill and knowledge level. For some reason we seem quite prepared to admit that our horses need to improve and yet we don't quite make the same connection for ourselves! Most horses, in the hands of a true horseman, will perform well and go willingly and softly, because a horseman understands the language of the horse, has empathy for him and can communicate with him effectively. If a horse owner is having any kind of difficulty with a horse, then certainly a good trainer will be able to help, but without the owner also improving their skills, before long the horse will be right back to where it started. If the owner's horsemanship skills were really up to the task at hand, then the trainer wouldn't have been needed. So it only makes sense really, that if the horse needs some training, then the owner needs a bit of a horsemanship boost also. More often than not, it is the owner who doesn't have the time to invest in their own horsemanship, that ends up seriously hurt and all of a sudden with all the time in the world - recuperating. Or the owner who doesn't have the money , who also ends up either hurt or with a horse with serious issues and that ends up spending a lot more money for even more training , or vet bills

Having a horse develop under the guidance of a trainer can be a waste if the rider doesn’t develop their riding skills as well.

or loss of income due to injury. Not so very long ago, a really lovely young lady came along to a clinic, very keen to sort out her troublesome horse. He was a beautiful chestnut Quarter Horse, who was also quite skittish, a nervous type who had trouble just standing still, let alone doing anything else. He was also her top competition horse that she had been competing on with some success, provided she could get him to the show and that on the day she could stop him from bucking. She was very keen to do well with her competition career and she certainly had a capable horse and she could ride quite well. The trouble was, her horse was greatly lacking in confidence and trust in her - even though she loved and doted on him and was progressively getting worse. The more I talked with her, the more concerned about her I became. I was very worried that this nice girl would become one of those `do you remember such and such’ stories. I was very relieved that she had come along to a clinic and that she was embarking on her horsemanship journey. She lined up the first morning of the clinic, her horse snorting and tap dancing and fidgeting in general. She on the other hand was quite used to his behaviour and though she was very keen to see some improvement in his behaviour, she just shrugged it off as `just the way he is’. Her goal for the clinic was to help him be more confident and to stop him bucking.

During the course of the two days, things certainly improved for these two. The girl learnt to listen more to what her horse was trying to tell her and how to help him to relax and be confident in his forward, instead of bottling up his emotions and then exploding upward when it all got to be too much. By the end of the two days she had him going along nicely. He was calm in the line up for group chats, she could canter him around the huge arena on a loose rein among other hors-

es.....she was very, very happy. Shane, who was conducting the clinic, suggested a follow-on program for the two of them. To consolidate what she had learnt and to help her horse become truly confident and more consistent in all situations, he recommended that she keep pursuing her horsemanship skills and knowledge, do her home work and invest time in her studies of horsemanship. Her horse was of a nervous disposition and Shane was concerned for her long term safety, so he recommended she get him (and herself!) to a certain level in the program before she go out showing too much again. She was so excited about her progress over the weekend, she promised she would. All went well for a month or two. We heard of her occasionally from others in the group. She had been coming to the group play days, working through the QS Program, ticking her (homework card) boxes and progressing nicely. Continued page 50

Providing a new life for brumbies South East Queensland Brumby Association held a brumby training display day at the Apollonian Hotel at Boreen Point which was attended by 45 people. They were there to watch Terry Wilson train a wild brumby mare. The vacant paddock adjacent to the hotel was transformed with a large round yard and electric fencing installed to accommodate two brumbies, seating and sound system. The small crowd sat quietly in the late afternoon shade whilst Terry moved a pretty bay mare named Toolara into the solid round yard by simply clicking his fingers. Toolara ran into the yard snorting, quietly followed by Terry who closed the gate. Toolara ran around the yard and then after a couple of circles turned and started following Terry who was performing a natural horsemanship technique known as `join up'. Terry then introduced a large bamboo pole with a rope on it

and within an hour had very gently haltered Toolara. In the second hour of the demonstration, Toolara was taught to move around on the rope and to accept a tarpoline being drapped over her. Sharon Murphy, the owner of the mare said Toolara was from the state forest located between Gympie and Tin Can Bay. “I'm really pleased she now has a halter on as I've owned her for the past year but hadn't been able to get a halter on her,” she said. “Terry is going to train her to saddle for me.” Terry Wilson, president of the SEQ Brumby Association, said that herds of brumbies graze along Gympie Tin Can Bay Road and Maryborough Cooloola Road. “The horses are slowly being removed by forestry due to the risk they pose to motorists,” he said. “After being trapped the horses are delivered to SEQ Brumby Association for care, training and rehoming.

Forming a bond of trust My name is Katelyn Blakemore, I am a member of the Yandina Pony Club and I would like to tell you about my brumby, Dodge Challenger. He is a flaxen seven-year-old we bought Dodge because he was the half brother to my other pony, Joker. Dodge was unbroken when I bought him and I have broken and trained him my self. Dodge has taught me so many things over the years, I trust this horse with my life. I am able to face him towards anything and no matter how nervous I may be he will always pull through. We compete in sporting, gymkhanas, dressage, hacking, showjumping and are now taking on cross country. Dodge is a truly stunning horse, everywhere we go he is always complemented on his looks and he has even won an award from best tail on show. Dodge and I still have so far to go in our competing and I can’t

Katelyn Blakemore and her brumby, Dodge Challenger.

wait for what the future holds for us. I want people to realise how amazing brumbies are. I own Dodge’s half brother and broke him in when I was 11, he also competes in many different disciplines and has won many trophies, between them roughly 35 and thousands of ribbons.

Training a brumby is challenging but rewarding once the fear of humans is overcome.

“Training a wild horse is quite different to training a domestic bred horse. “For a start you can't get near the horse, they are very wary. “Once they have overcome their fear of humans, brumbies make excellent riding horses as they have a calm temperament, are intelligent and very responsive to any given cue.”

The purpose of the day was to promote the brumbies and demonstrate how a brumby can be trained, as well as raise funds for the association. Anyone interested in providing a home for a brumby can phone Terry Wilson on 07 5485 3369 or for more information go to www.seqbrumby.com

Membership structure goes national Equestrian members across Australia will now all form part of the new national membership structure designed to bring the sport together. The 'one sport, one membership' structure unveiled by Equestrian Australia and the state branches, is designed to bring about consistency in membership status and recognition for all equestrian members. The changes will come into effect as of July 1, 2013 for NSW, Vic, Tas and SA with members from WA, Qld and NT to participate in the changes as part of the next renewal period. Equestrian Australia's Chairman, Dr Warwick Vale, said the change is about providing consistency within the sport and attracting new members. “This project has been the result of many years of hard work by our state branches and EA to bring about a national solution to our membership,” he said.

“Like many sports we want to bring in new participants, and this structure will not only allow for more people to be recognised and participate at the grassroots level of the sport it will also provide added recognition for our officials, coaches and owners. “Previously there were more than 45 membership categories which varied from State to State. “Whether you're a volunteer, official, owner, coach or you just like to compete at the lower levels of the sport with your horse and friends, we wanted to ensure there are appropriate categories for everyone.” Details of the new membership structure can be found on the EA website at www.equestrian.org.au Members with queries should contact their state branch. Membership renewals are now available online for NSW, Vic, SA and Tasmania.

The Horse Report

Putting time into horsemanship pays dividends From page 41 Her horse was moving forward better and getting more confident by the week. After a time we gradually heard less of her and then eventually heard no more about her for several months. About six months later, a friend dropped by and began a conversation with “Do you remember such and such?” It was this very same girl he was referring to. With a deep breath I replied, “Yes. How is she going?” Apparently her horse was going so well that she had been back out showing him again. At first she had been combining her horsemanship and her showing and he had held it together okay. He was a little nervous but did much better than previously. Then, with each show, he progressively got worse again until at one point he reared and spun and took off across the showgrounds. The girl was okay and only a bit shaken, but being a fairly confident rider herself, she wasn't overly worried. The friend that was sharing the news with me, told me that he had asked her how her horsemanship was going. She had told him that she loved it, loved

Becoming a proficient horse rider requires a commitment of time and dedication.

doing it and her horse responded really well to it, but she just didn't have the time to spend doing it, as she just wanted to get out competing again. Her horse had been going so much better and had been doing great at the shows, until his old behaviour had started up again. My friend suggested that if she really wanted to help her horse and to have him consistently performing well, then perhaps she should look at working on her horsemanship skills first. Again she told him that she just didn't have the time or the money to invest in her horse-

manship, she just wanted to be competing. While it's fantastic to be able to get out and about and compete with your horse, what she didn't understand was that being a good rider and having a capable horse, isn't enough. Without horsemanship, things can and often do, go badly wrong. Her horse needed to be more calm, to be confident, to have true forward and to have a bond of trust and rapport with her. She needed to have the skills to be able to listen to and understand her horse. These included having empathy for how the horse felt about things and to be able to help him overcome his fears and suspicions. Horsemanship is a concentrated skill that needs to be studied with focus and determination to produce consistent results. It doesn’t come without commitment. Like any new skill, you need to spend the time on it to become truly proficient. It is not really a difficult skill if you have a great program to follow and a coach to help you. But there are no short cuts. If you want to be good with horses, then you are going to have to put the time in and to practise. And if you do!....well....the results you get will be truly incredible. The WTP (Winning Tongue Plate) normal plate bit design the difference between winning and losing an event. Used by leading trainers Brian Smith, David Hayes, Dave Kelly, Mark Kavanagh, Olympic riders Megan Jones and colt breakers and Olympian riders Blair Richardson, Peter McMahon and Julien Welsh rating it the best bit on the market and like having power steering reforming some of the worst hangers and problem horses. The WTP bit is the only bit in the world to win a prestigious Australian international design award. It is well documented that jointed snaffle bits cause roof rubbing and bit pinching causing pain signals to spread to any other branch of the same facial nerve, resulting in pain in areas of the face that have no direct contact with the bit - resulting in head shaking, pulling, rearing, bucking, mouth opening and poor performance. The WTP centre flat plate is up to 14mm lower than other bit joints allowing more room between the tongue and the roof of the mouth preventing all mouth issues. Exposed jointed snaffle bits create up to 300kg of pressure pinching the tongue down to centimetres. Whereas the WTP Bit encased joint prevents the arms folding down, and the 6.5 square cm low profile plate creates a softer surface area reducing the bit pressure by about 85%. The WTP bit arms have limited travel to reduce outer ring pressure to the cheeks and lips when working a horse in a straight line. The only time cheek pressure is required when turning your horse. Further the bit arms do not hinge downward thereby preventing pain to the roof, tongue and bars. Another great benefit of the WTP Ring bit the large ring runs through the plate. Therefore, no small annoying retaining ring required. The wait is over to prevent and fix mouthing issues contact your local saddlery for a WTP bit.

BONE POWER

Calcium Complex for maximum bioavailablility

Targeting healthy bone development and remodelling for horses grazing high oxalate pastures. Oxalates are found naturally in some tropical grasses and phytates are found in some grains. The oxalates and phytates bind to the calcium, making it unavailable to the horse, dramatically decreasing the calcium available. If deficiencies continue, the horse will take the calcium needed for heart and muscle from the bones, leading to de-mineralisation. This can cause swelling of the facial bones, lameness, weight loss and dental problems. When grazing tropical grasses such as kikuyu, buffel, pangola, setaria, stargrass and panics it is recommended that horses receive daily calcium supplementation. Vitamite Bone Power™ is a palatable, high-dose Calcium Supplement, prepared using advanced complexing technology to optimize calcium bioavailability. This protects the calcium during the digestion process and enhances its absorption across the intestinal wall, improving its bioavailability.
