Horse show reaches new heights with EQUITANA When it comes to horse shows, they don’t come much bigger than EQUITANA and in November, Sydney will play host to the biggest equine show in the Southern Hemisphere.

To he held at the Sydney Showground, EQUITANA Sydney, will run from November 10-13 with the four day event promising exciting competition, education, shopping and great family entertainment.

States join forces to fight virus A cross-border task force will be formed to investigate the Hendra virus following a recent spate of cases in NSW and Queensland, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh have announced.

The taskforce will include Chief Veterinarians, Chief Health Officers and Chief scientists from both states as well as a CSIRO representative.

Mr O’Farrell said the NSWQueensland Taskforce would meet urgently to examine the current Hendra outbreaks and ensure a consistent and co-ordinated approach in responding to the disease.

“Veterinary, medical and scientific experts will examine the circumstances surrounding recent outbreaks and lead a coordinated cross-border response,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“This investigation will include the risks associated with the virus, property and animal biosecurity to avoid infection, education and available science

NSW provides updates on line NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) has unveiled its latest electronic communication tools to assist horse owners find the facts on Hendra in the state.

NSW DPI Principal Director Biosecurity, Dr Bruce Christie, said the community can now easily stay informed on the current Hendra situation in NSW by jumping online.

“Members of the community can now receive everything they need to know about the Hendra situation in NSW easily and quickly using Twitter, a regular email newsletter and our NSW Hendra web portal,” Dr Christie said.

“Information we will be providing will include information on outbreaks, tips on how to keep you and your horse safe from the Hendra virus and dates of public information events.”

NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson said there had been two isolated cases of Hendra virus, which can be passed to humans from horses, in northern NSW. “Flying foxes are known to spread the disease but there has been no evidence of bat to human or human to human

infection,” she said.

“This is also an opportunity to study risk factors peculiar to NSW including possible similarities between the recent outbreaks and spike in incidents.

“Given the threat this virus poses, not only to animals, but also to humans, we need to look closely at human risk factors to ensure all is being done to prevent any human cases."

What to look out for in both humans and horses While the exact route of infection is not known, it is thought that horses may contract Hendra virus infection from eating food recently contaminated by flying fox urine, saliva or birth products.

Disease in humans The few known cases of human Hendra virus infection have become unwell with: an influenza-like illness (which led to pneumonia in one case) with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache and tiredness and/or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) with symptoms such as headache, high fever, and drowsiness, which progressed to convulsions and/or coma and death.

Time from exposure of a person to a sick horse until the start of illness showing signs in humans has been reported to be between five and 21 days.

Disease in horses Small amounts of virus may be present in a horse’s body fluids, particularly nasal secretions, for a few days before they become sick.

Hendra virus infection in horses can produce a wide range of signs.

Early signs usually include: - fever, - increased heart rate and restlessness; - difficulty breathing and/or weakness, - neurological signs such as uncoordinated gait and muscle twitching,.

PROTECTING HORSES FROM HENDRA VIRUS Horse owners can take the following steps to reduce the risk of horses becoming infected with Hendra virus.

This advice is based on the current understanding of the virus:

- Place horse water containers under cover and feed · horses under cover.

- Do not place horse feed and water containers under trees, particularly if flying foxes are attracted to those trees.

- Do not use feed that might be attractive to flying foxes if they are known to be in the area. Fruit and vegetables (e.g. apples, carrots) or anything sweet (e.g. molasses).

- Do not allow horses to access the area under trees that may be attractive to bats when the trees are flowering or fruiting. If possible, remove horses from paddocks when the trees are flowering and fruiting or, if this is not possible, fence or tape off the area under the trees.

- Alternatively, stable horses at high risk times when fruit bats are feeding or roosting in or around their paddocks.

- If it is not possible to remove horses from paddocks, try to temporarily remove your horses during times of peak flying fox activity (usually at dusk and during the night).

No restrictions for horse movements Biosecurity Queensland is reminding people that there are no general restrictions on horse movements in Queensland.

Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rick Symons said Biosecurity Queensland had received a number of enquiries from concerned horse owners wanting to know about moving horses to and from events. “With a number of horse-related events on weekends, it is understandable that people are seeking information,� Dr Symons said. “Hendra virus is not highly infectious and, consequently, the horse industry is not subject to movement restrictions for Hendra virus - except for the nine properties currently under quarantine. “Horse owners need to take precautions on their properties to protect their horses from Hendra virus infection.

Dr Symons said although the current cases were all located in the south-east region, horse owners across the state should be vigilant for signs consistent with Hendra virus infection. “While people are free to move their horses, we would encourage them to practice good biosecurity practices and not travel, work on or take unwell horses to other properties or equestrian events. “A full list of precautions for owners to protect their horses and themselves should their horses become sick is available at www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au�

Currently, 83 horses are being monitored daily. All horses currently appear to be clinically normal.

There have been eight confirmed horse deaths in Queensland since June 2011.

Only the properties under quarantine for Hendra virus have movement restrictions.

It is vital that horse owners do not take unwell horses to horse events and that they practise good biosecurity before, during and after the event.

Biosecurity Queensland says there are no restrictions on horse movements around the state due to the Hendra virus outbreaks

In Queensland, there are currently six separate locations where Biosecurity Queensland is managing Hendra virus cases.

These are located in the Beaudesert, Mt Alford, Park Ridge, Kuranda, Hervey Bay and Boondall areas.

The total number of properties quarantined as a result of Hendra virus in Queensland is 11.

Horse owners are urged to review their biosecurity procedures and contact a veterinarian if they suspect Hendra virus. Horse owners around the state should be vigilant throughout the year for signs consistent with Hendra virus.

Being present during foaling can save lives

By GEORGIA KIRBY “We lost our foal last night.”

“If we had been there we could have saved it.”

These are the words I get greeted with from devastated horse breeders, time and time again over the breeding season.

All the planning, nearly a year of waiting and the financial and emotional investment, destroyed within minutes and in many cases it's preventable - just for the sake of being there when your mare foals.

I hear many people say, “horses have been foaling by themselves for thousands of years, you should leave them alone to foal”.

This is a very naive way of thinking.

Yes, wild horses foal alone, very successfully and natural selection culls out those that don't.

Once the horse was domesticated, we took that natural selection from them, we placed them in artificial surroundings, we feed artificial feeds, we then cross breed them.

All of this leads to increased risk of foaling complications, and it is now our responsibility, to monitor and ensure the well being of our mares and foals.

Being a responsible horse breeder means you need to be present when your mare foals, so you are able to get or give assistance when things go wrong.

Situations like, the sack did not break and the foal suffocated.

The foal’s shoulders were stuck and the foal was lost and nearly lost the mare as well.

The foal was mal presented and both the mare and foal were lost.

These are just a few of the complications that occur and in many cases the losses can be prevented.

Knowledge is key to Hendra solution

What a devastating year for the horse industry.

Hendra was isolated in 1994 and never have we had such a cluster of infected cases.

Something has happened. The question everyone wants to know is what?

Every day there is some `new’ theory about why we have experienced the reality of 2011.

I am sure there are a multitude of factors but it is absolutely essential that no stone be left unturned in the quest for answers as hopefully this opportunity will never be repeated.

The horse industry must demand answers and to achieve these, resources must be committed towards achieving this end.

I hear constant criticism of the government departments for failing to do this and that.

These criticisms are extremely unfair as the staff of the various departments are all dedicated, committed and very hard working individuals who are simply doing their job.

We all have to remember that it is

the elected government that dictates what the departmental staff do and the only way to achieve results is for the people who elect politicians to demand of their representatives that policies are directed at and funds committed towards ensuring that we find out what is different.

Objective scientific facts are the only way that anything can be achieved.

We gather this data, analyse it, and then proper and correct advice and management practices can be evolved So what has changed?

Simplistically one would have to think that the answer must lie within the following factors: the virus, the bats, the environment, or horse management.

I was privileged to listen to a presentation by Dr Linfa Wang, the world's leading expert on Hendra virus and his information was amazing.

We do know a tremendous lot about this virus.

The relevant points to me were firstly that the virus is highly virulent, ie deadly once a susceptible animal has been infected but very poorly transmissible.

This confirms that the virus is

Understanding why flying foxes are shedding Hendra virus in increasing amounts is a key to combating the virus

extremely difficult to catch.

It does not easily spread from an infected individual to a susceptible one.

Secondly, the virus is ancient. It has been in existence in bats for thousands of years and it's genetic make-up hasn’t changed.

Strike out viral change as being responsible.

It is difficult to believe that horse management has changed, although it would appear that the majority, if not all, of the current infected horses have been free roamers out in the paddock, with little direct human supervision.

A vital theory put forward by Dale Andersen of Beaudesert, is the fact that horses need a certain amount of fibre in their diet each day.

Horses out in paddocks that have a shortage of grass, are much more likely to scavenge and look for sources of feed.

Perhaps this is a factor that predisposes them to search in areas that bats may have been feeding.

This is not a `change’ and so we should rule this out We are left with two elements.

The bats and the environment.

Certainly the environment has changed dramatically.

The last two seasons in particular have given us the best annual rainfalls for at least a decade.

Surely this is a significant difference.

It is absolutely essential that all aspects of the possible effects theses excellent seasons may have contributed are studied.

One possible theory could be that bat numbers have increased.

We need to know.

Certainly in nature, almost all natural populations expand exponentially in times of plenty.

Do bats follow the same pattern?

The time of the year could be critical in relation to this.

July is certainly the middle of winter.

Does this mean that available food sources for the bats, particularly if their numbers have increased, are at their lowest because of reduced flowering and fruits in the middle of winter?

We need to know!

Certainly it appears that science has determined that the bats seem to shed more virus when under stress.

Tests so far this year have revealed a dramatic increase in the amount of virus being shed.

What is causing the stress in bats that has resulted in this increase?

We need to know.

We need, and must demand, answers.

Rest assured that the present departmental staff members are working as hard as they can towards this end.

The horse industry has to be satisfied that this is enough, given the uniqueness of the situation.

Our elected representatives must be challenged immediately to satisfy the industry that enough funds and resources are being applied now so that the opportunity is not lost.

Horse owners should make their ideas and concerns known, either by contacting their representatives, or instructing the various societies to which a majority are affiliated, to make representations on their behalf.

I personally would like to see funds allocated towards outsourcing an epidemiological investigation, either through a private company or an academic research institution.

Governments are keen to call inquiries into almost everything else, why not Hendra?

There can never be too much information as it is validated information that allows us to develop management practices to help manage this disease.

If nothing else, there are daily calls for culling of bats, and equally emotive responses to leave them alone.

The answer lies in knowledge.

If we know the ecology and dynamics of bat populations, rational scientific recommendations can be applied.

From the paddock to the show ring

By LIZZIE WELLS When you're sitting in the grand stands watching the final workout of a championship at a major show, don't underestimate the time and effort that goes in to preparing the horses involved.

It all starts in the paddock.

It is possible to turn the hairiest, muddiest and tangled horse in to a superstar, as long as the basics have been covered such as; hoof care, dental checks and overall health have been attended to.

The process of taking your horse from the paddock to the show ring can be done within five simple steps.

Step One: Assess the situation Have a good look at your horse, consider whether the horse needs; the hair along the coronet band trimmed, it's ears clipped, mane or tail pulled and/or shaven, tail dyed and trimmed, whiskers and long eyelashes need to be shaved and most importantly check the horses shoes. Once

you know exactly what the horse needs to be done in preparation for the ring than you can acquire an action plan for the make-over.

Step Two: Action Plan Specific time frames need to be made before you start your make-over. For instance, mane pulling should be done at least one week prior to a show.

Mane pulling for a horse can be very uncomfortable, however it is the only way to get perfect plaits.

A horse should never should not have its mane pulled and be plaited on the same day as this will hurt the horse’s skin.

This is also the same with tail pulling.

If you think that you horse’s shoes need to be checked by a farrier than arrange a time.

When you get to a show and your horse has lost a shoe and therefore is lame, all of your hard work is wasted.

Trimming your horse is very important as this gives you the finer detail that can mean the world of difference in the

show ring.

The most important areas that need to be looked at each time before a show would be: - legs and hooves, - bridle path - ears When trimming the hooves, make sure that the hair along the coronet band is perfectly straight.

The bridle path should not be trimmed too long as your horse’s neck will look a lot longer with more plaits.

When it comes to trimming your horse’s ears, we all know that they don't like it.

So, you have two options, clippers or hair removal cream.

If you chose to use hair removal cream, put a cotton ball down the ear drum first to ensure that no cream goes down.

Shaving is another thing that needs to be done.

Your horse’s chin hair and the long eyelashes on top of the eyes need to be shaved.

There are two options that you can choose when it comes to

your horse’s tail.

Either shave the sides of the tail or braid it. If your horse has a long thick tail and has a long hair at the top, braiding would be a good idea.

However, if your horse has a thin tail or you don't know how to braid or just don't want to, shaving would be your option.

Once you feel confident that your horse is all the right colors and has hair in all the right places you can then move onto your next step, the day before the show!

Preparation is crucial in ring success Step Three: The day before the showThe day before the show is usually a very busy day especially if you are still at school or working. Planning your day always helps.

The following preparation needs to be done to ensure that your show day runs smooth and is less stressful.

It is a good idea to make sure that your horse is worked this day at some point, preferably before bathing.

Once worked, touch up on any past trimming. Once touch up trimming has been done, bath your horse. Shampoo your horse’s coat and its mane and tail and do not put conditioner in the mane as this will make it hard for plating.

This is also a good time to wash any false tails if need be.

A little trick to make your horse’s coat look immaculate is mix some QV oil with warm water and pour over your horse (but don't forget the quality of a horse’s coat comes from the inside not outside).

When the horse has been bathed, allow the mane to dry and then your horse is ready to be plated.

Once your horse has been plaited, it is good to put a mane stay or tight fitting hood over the plaits as this will help to flatten them over night.

When your horse’s legs are completely dry another little trick that can be used to give your horse the whitest socks is to mix baby powder and water

into a paste and then rub on white socks and allow to dry over night whilst bandaged.

The day of the show just brush off the baby powder.

As soon as the horse has had its beauty pamper, you need to get yourself ready.

Think about clothing, hair accessories, helmets, whips, horses make-up, human makeup, saddles, bridles, numbnas, browbands and/or anything else you might need.

The day before the show you also need to clean your show gear, make sure that your saddle is polished and stirrups cleaned. Your bridle bit should be spotless and browband sparkling.

Ensure that everything is packed away in the float and pray that your horse doesn't sleep on a poo pillow.

Step Four: Day of the show When it comes to presenting your horse for a show you have to take everything into consideration.

The ultimate goal when it comes to showing a horse is gaining the attention of the judge.

As soon as you get your horse

off the float at the show, take the boots off and start blacking the hooves.

If your horse has any white socks, brush off the baby powder and get a permanent marker and go around the top of the sock to even out patches. White chalk can then be applied to missed areas on the socks.

Once the hooves and socks have been done, you need to grab a half sponge with some ranvensoil and highlight the front of the horse’s legs and on the hind legs up the back of the leg.

Once the legs have been completed fully, you can then move onto your horse’s tail.

If it needs to be braided or a false tail needs to be put in.

Then most importantly spray and final brush.

You then need to move onto your checkers and sharks teeth. Grab a bucket, water spray, a small round brush and a cut nit comb.

With your nit comb draw a line in the middle of the horse’s back so that it lines up with the top of the tail.

Draw another line underneath the middle line so you know how long the checkers should be. Then start drawing your checkers on your horse lining them up with a base line each time.

Your sharks teeth should start right from the flank on the horse and all it is , is drawing crosses on the side of your horse.

When you have finished the checkers and sharks teeth you move onto the make-up.

Start by getting some chalk and putting baby oil on the end then outline your horse’s eyes (as shown in the picture above) and simply color in with the chalk.

When applying chalk to the horse's mouth area go a little bit higher around the very front. Whatever you do just make sure that it blends in with your horse’s natural look.

You then need to get some clear cover and rub over the chalk for the shiny look.

If your horse has a blaze or a star, you can get white cover

For results you can see

paste and a toothbrush and add on to your horse’s white markings to make perfect.

Even if your horse doesn't have any white markings on the face and you would like to test it out, start at the swirl on their face and follow the hair around.

Step Five: Hopefully be rewarded for your efforts!

A lot of time is devoted to working on your horses performance in the ring.

This can be taken away so quickly by having poor presentation.

So remember the five steps as they will guide you from show to show and hopefully from win to win!

Plaiting the Mane To get the best results the mane should be thoroughly washed and conditioned and the mane pulled to about 8cm long and still damp. ( Keep mane damp with spray bottle) Step 1. Divide into sections 3.5 cm apart, hold back the rest of the mane with a comb or clip and plait right down to the end and secure with a rubber band.

Step2. Using a darning needle and cotton the same colour as the mane sew into the end of the mane then fold the plait in half then in half again and sew through plait to secure Step 3. When all plaits are finished and securely sewn give a final spray with hair spray and put on a clean satin lined hood or skinny hood to protect plaits and keep them neat and clean ready for the show.

Looking sharp in the ring

By REBECCA LOVETT Looking sharp in the ring has never been easier!

There are so many options and colours available to suit every horse and rider/handler combination.

So where do you start?

The first step is to determine if your horse is a hunter or open hack.

When showing a hunter in hand, you should tend to dress in more neutral tones browns, olives and cream colours though navy is also acceptable.

I tend not to recommend or wear bright colours including red when showing hunters. I would wear plain flat shoes, a plain cane and to finish your look wear a nice hat.

When showing open horses in hand, the sky is the limit.

Skirts and pants are equally acceptable with a plain camisole and matching jacket.

Add some colour to your outfit that matches your ribbon browband.

Again flat shoes, bling cane or whip and matching hat.

Open show jackets are traditionally plain navy or black three or four buttons with a double vent.

To create your own style, you can add a accent of colour and in the form of piping, outer colour trim or even a full collar colour.

There are so many options available again keep in mind your body shape when deciding between a standard cut, square cutaway or rounded cutaway jacket.

Matching back your ribbon browband, lapel pin, vest or stock can tie in the whole look.

Always remember to do your hair, clean your boots and other gear before stepping into the ring.

If your having trouble deciding what to buy I would recommend a plain navy then you can change your vest and stock for different looks.

Hunter hacks should be less colorful jacket colours normally are brown, olive green and navy tweed fabric, trim on the colour can be worn, plain browbands and hunting style canes should be used.

Your stock should be plainer color and gloves should always be worn.

When deciding make sure you consider your horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s colour and you body shape before making a final decision not always to follow the trends and stay true to what works best for you.

Avocados pose a deadly health hazard to horses With the warm weather of spring finally coming upon us, those who are lucky enough to have avocados could also have a hazard to horses on their hands.

The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark are poisonous to horses.

All of these contain Persin which is a cardiac toxin (heart damaging).

Signs and symptoms of avocado poisoning in horses includes swelling around the head and eyes which can extend around the cheeks and glands.

This can cause the horse difficult with swallowing.

Swelling in other areas can also occur such as around the abdomen and sheath.

In lactating mares, Persin produces a non-infectious mastitis which is the inflammation of the mammary glands, epithelial necrosis which is the skin cell death over the mammary glands and agalactia which is the decrease in milk production.

Occasionally inflammation of the gut and colic may also

occur.

Part of the heart muscle dies which is called myocardial necrosis.

The horse could have difficulty breathing called dyspneaz, coughing and increased respiratory and heart rate.

It is this damage to your horses heart which causes fluid to build and the swellings to occur.

As the condition deteriorates a bluish colour will tinge your horses lips, this is called cyanosis.

Finally the horse will stop eating, become very weak and will not be able to get up.

The heart damage may be fatal and the cardiac changes are largely irreversible; therefore, access to avocado groves should be prevented for horses.

If you suspect your horse of eating avocado trees, contact your vet immediately.

Leg yeilding benefits horse and rider

By JOHN DOWNES This discussion is one in a series on the training of the lateral exercises.

If you have just commenced reading this article, I would suggest accessing previous articles which are readily accessible on the Horse Report website at www.horsereport.com.

These same articles will be available on my website www.freewebs.com/downesequestrianservices within the next four weeks.

In the last issue I discussed the introduction of the lateral exercises.

The first of these exercises was turn on the forehand. Although the turn on the forehand is not a competition movement it serves a crucial role for introducing horse and rider to the concept of using the inside leg into the outside rein.

This exercise is an important precursor exercise to all other movements executed in dressage as it teaches the horse to move away from the inside (driving) leg into the outside rein.

Not only are all lateral exercises predicated on this concept but more importantly it allows the rider to rebalance the horse by engaging the horse's inside hind leg.

This rebalancing is also called the half halt or parade. I will leave the

discussion of half halt/parade for a future article but keep in mind these exercises or tools are being introduced to improve the paces of the horse and subsequent communication between horse and rider.

Once the turn on the forehand can be executed easily on both reins in an open arena horse and rider will be ready to move on to the next lateral exercise which is leg yielding.

Leg yielding is a competition movement which can be executed in trot on the diagonal.

To make it easier for both horse and rider to acquire these new skills, my suggestion is to practice this movement in walk until you feel proficient before trying in trot.

Leg yielding is commonly performed in one of three ways: 1.down the long side of the arena (nose to wall/haunches in) 2.across the diagonal, or, 3.on a circle In this article we will concentrate on leg yielding in nose to wall down the long side of the arena.

Nose to wall is the easiest lateral exercise to train as the wall will help to control the paces and make up for lack of outside rein.

We will commence nose to wall away from the inside left leg to the outside right rein, in walk, by going large around the arena on the right rein or clockwise.

Proceed through the corner before

the long side of the arena ensuring the horse is bent around the rider's right leg .

As you reach the long side straighten the horse. Place your new inside or left leg on the girth, and block with your outside right rein whilst maintaining a slight flexion to the left.

This will cause the horse to swing its hindquarters towards the centre of the arena .

Proceed down the long side for several steps. If you find this exercise initially confusing and difficult to execute, straighten the horse, take a few deep breaths and recommence the exercise.

When you are able to execute this exercise easily, increase the number of steps until you are able to do the whole long side of the arena.

At the end of the long side straighten the horse and ride the corner in correct bend and flexion.

On the short side of the arena allow the horse to relax by surrendering your reins while maintaining activity in the walk.

I would normally repeat this exercise a number of times on both reins.

Once I feel the horse understands the exercise and is executing it with ease I then move on to the next leg yielding exercise which is across the diagonal of the arena.

This movement initially is best executed from the quarter or centre line to the long side of the arena.

Turn the horse down the centre line of the arena and proceed straight for a few metres. Once you have the horse straight and waiting for you flex the horse slightly away from the direction of travel.

Drive the horse towards the long side of the arena being careful to ensure the horse is as straight as possible and its hindquarters are not trailing while utilising the inside leg to outside rein aid concept at all times.

Points to be aware of * In leg yielding the horse is always flexed and bent away from the direction of travel * Keep the horse as straight as possible while maintaining flexion and bend * Overuse of the inside rein is the biggest cause of failure to execute the leg yield correctly. This action will result in your horse being over

flexed and going through the outside shoulder in the direction of travel * Alternatively if you feel the horse is not moving away from your leg use more leg and not more inside rein. If your horse ignores your leg use a more forceful aid such as your spur or whip * Try to excite the inside hind leg.

We want the horse to cross and show some expression as this will help create engagement * Once the exercise can be done with ease in walk try it in trot * If trying for nose to wall in trot, try for less angle as too much angle causes loss of the outside shoulder and you will lose the engagement you are trying to create * There is currently some considerable confusion in the naming of the leg yielding exercises. When a horse is bent and flexed to the left and travelling to the right, this is called leg yield left due to the way the horse is flexed. However Equestrian Australia recently adopted the United States Dressage Federation tests and have named the lateral exercises after the direction of travel not flexion unlike the Australian and European Federations.

Leg yielding is not only a great exercise to improve the horse's suppleness and engagement but it is also a way to improve the rider's sense of timing, coordination and riding skills. By synchronising the timing of the driving aid of the rider's leg when the inside hind leg of the horse is in the air, this will assist in adding expression to the movement. One of the results of the leg yield is the horse should now begin to carry himself on the bit due to the engagement of the inside hind leg. It is most important to remember the roundness of the horse comes from ensuring flexion/bend, controlling the paces within the movement and not from the overuse of reins or harsh bis.

One of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the world will be on show in Alstonville in October - Team Penning.

It is a sport for all ages and holds appeal for anyone who enjoys precision along with an adrenaline kick at the same time.

“It’s about the only horse sport that mum, dad, and the children can all ride in the same event,” Northern Rivers Team Penners Association president Katrina O'Leary said.

This fast paced event gives a team of three riders 60-90 seconds (depending on the class) to separate three head of specifically identified cattle from a herd of around 30 head of cattle.

Once they have been separated from the herd, the team's job is to get the separated cattle to the

opposite end of the arena and in to the 'pen' hence the name.

The challenges of Team Penning is simply-beating the time, working as a team and having fun.

The day will be held at the Alstonville Show Grounds on Sunday, October 2 with action starting at 8am.

What’s Happening NATIONAL DILUTE CHAMPIONSHIPS The Inaugural National OPEN Dilute Championships will be held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre on October 1 and 2. This promises to be a great event thanks to the wonderful sponsorship from Konkhes. The event is open to all dilutes that are registered with a recognised dilute society and will include a completely separate program for 10.2 hands under and over 10.2 hands.

The program includes a full halter and mini performance program for 10.2 hands and under plus a full program for halter, formal under saddle, dressage, hacking and western for over 10.2 hands.

There are dilute sections for Palomino, Buckskin, Dun, Cremello and Perlino, Silver, Champagne as well as Ancillaries, Appendix, DA Broken coloured dilute.

No qualifiers required to enter this event so everyone is welcome to attend regardless of experience. A show like this has never been undertaken before. It is the first truly open Dilute Championships.

Entries close September 9 but late entries will be accepted up to September 23 at double entry fees.

What’s Happening TOP OF THE RANGE ARABIAN SHOW The Downs Arabian Club Inc. is holding the annual Top of the Range Arabian Event for 2011 over the weekend of October 22 and 23 at the Toowoomba Showground. A focus of the event will be the Youth Feature culminating in Hi Point Youth of the Show along with a range of amateur classes. A full purebred and derivative halter program including Crabbet and Egyptian Feature events will be run as will the very popular the Top of the Range Gala Event.

This year the show coincides with the Riding Pony State Championships also being held at Toowoomba Showgrounds on Sunday, allowing riding ponies to compete at both shows. We have also expanded our dressage program to include elementary following the success of the dressage program last year.
