g n i t a r b Cele e th Greatest

by ‘Hood Magazine

BIRTHday of All

Before smash cakes, perfectly planned Paw Patrol themed parties, and those middle school sleep overs comes the greatest birthday of all. After all, you are bringing a new life into the world, it deserves to be celebrated! From baby showers and sprinkles to elaborate naming ceremonies, birth celebrations look different all over the world. Whether you are looking for something traditional or super simple, here are a few ideas on how to celebrate that beautiful new bundle of joy.

Baby Showers and Sprinkles Baby showers definitely fall on the traditional side of this list. It’s not uncommon for a group of family and friends to gather and share in the excitement of new life. Whether you choose to have the shower prior to the baby being born or wait until after the baby makes their appearance, celebrating with a shower is a great way to do it. A baby shower is also a great chance to spoil the expecting parents by offering gifts, stories, and wisdom to begin their new adventure. While baby showers are often planned for first time parents, the trendy baby “sprinkles” have become increasingly popular with those second and third babies.

Symbolic Celebrating If a big gathering is not your thing, some families choose a simpler route. Opting to celebrate with something symbolic can be very special. These can

8|

September 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

be a variety of things from a family heirloom that will one day be passed to that child to the planting of a seedling tree to watch grow over the future years.

Covid Friendly Let’s face it, in this day and age we are currently in, traditional showers and parties may not be in the cards right now. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate that special baby and the proud parents! Sometimes it just takes getting a little creative! Drive-bys with streamers and balloons have been a fun way to see the new expanded family while keeping everyone safe. We have also started to see more family gatherings at the hospitals too. While visiting inside medical facilities is very limited, families have been showing their love by gathering with balloons and signs in the parking lots for parents to look out on. While it may not be how you expected to celebrate a new baby it is sure to offer memories and stories that will be told for many years to cone. Whichever way your family chooses, just remember to celebrate the most special BIRTHday of all! l

Monkey

CARDS

Who doesn’t love a cute monkey? These cards are adorable and very fun to make and give to someone! All you need is paper, glue, scissors and a black marker. If you don’t have a variety of colored paper, no worries! Just use plain white paper and color your card with crayons or colored pencils!

mom tip

If you are having a party, you could have the attending children make one and leave a message for the birthday boy or girl! What a fun keepsake and a great way to demonstrate how easy it is to lift one another up!

Fold one piece of paper in half and cut it out to a monkey face shape. Do not cut on the folded part...this will be where your card open and closes. Cut out a simple monkey body shape. Glue the head to the body. To finish it up, cut out detail pieces for the belly, inside of ears, and face. Use your black maker to create eyes and a mouth. Write a sweet message inside the card and you are all set!

Expanded Family Fun Opportunities at

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Fall is all too quickly arriving on our doorstep but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great family activities to do. The Corn Maze at Jellystone Park™ has reinvented their maze to create an all day experience that is right for any family. “We completed construction on our new Recreation Center this spring that allows us to expand our offerings during the corn maze season” said Ray Aljets, General Manager of the campground and corn maze complex. “We will continue to offer the same great maze experience including the area’s only jumping pillow and free mini-golf with your admission, but we’ve added a number of family friendly add-ons that can fill your whole day.” An outdoor laser tag arena highlights the new addition with 16 state of the art laser tag guns and multiple game modes for all ages. There is also an expanded merchandise and snack

area, new restrooms and additional activities in the heated and cooled recreation center. Paint your own ceramic figurine, choosing from a wide variety of designs including the one and only Yogi Bear™ himself. They even have custom fall themed t-shirts that you can tie dye at the park. “We feel like these new additions really add to the traditional corn maze experience and turn what was once a leisurely stroll through the corn field into a day of family entertainment,” Aljets said. The variety of packages and price points available mean there is an option for every family and budget. If you are looking to get your camper out for one last weekend, be sure to check into the Halloween themed weekends through the end of September. There are magic pumpkin patches, site to site Trick-or-Treating, Halloween crafts and much more! Be sure to bring your Halloween costumes for a fun-filled weekend. While pets are welcome in the campground, the corn maze has teamed with the Sioux Falls Area

For the last 28 years, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has focused on quality, family-focused entertainment. Speaking with park manager and part owner, Ray Aljets, I learned he is a 3rd generation owner operator of the park he co-owns and operates with his parents, Bruce and Donna, and his sister, Christina Lien. Built by his grandparents in 1989, the park continues its family focus employing extended family including three of Christina’s children and her son-in-law. Aljets says his seven-year-old son is a little young to put to work but maybe someday.

Virtual Learning The start of the school year usually means shopping for school supplies, back to school physicals and setting the alarm earlier. However, 2020 has shown us that there are a variety of ways that can work for educating our youth and virtual learning is becoming a reality that many families are choosing. For a variety of reasons, thousands of families in the Sioux Empire have chosen to keep their children home this year and choose this alternate method of learning. Our family has four children at various schools and we have chosen to consider the decision for their educational delivery mode as individuals. We have two children who are in high school, one in middle school and one in elementary school. When the Sioux Falls School District released the Return to Learn plan, our children were tasked with researching what the virtual learning option would look like for each of them. Our kindergartner was not asked to research anything, but we did decide as a family that we were most comfortable with her staying closer to us this year and that meant the virtual academy was best for her. Our middle school child thrives in environments with more consistency and we weren’t confident that an in-person learning experience would provide very much consistency this year. While we all agreed it would be better for him to be a part of the virtual academy, we had to have some serious discussions about what the expectations for virtual learning would be. While we all know that there may be some challenges that we will face during his virtual learning experience, we are ready to work together to help see him succeed!

14 |

September 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

Our oldest two children are both in high school and there were numerous factors to consider for each of their situations. After many hours of research and discussion, our family ultimately decided that our sophomore is going to attend in-person learning, while our junior is going to be a part of the virtual academy. The reasons are too numerous to list, but the primary consideration for virtual learning with our junior is that he is very self-driven and motivated to learn independently while carrying a very tough class load this year. He was signed up for multiple AP classes and ultimately, we decided together that the consistency of virtual learning was going to be very advantageous for him. Now that we have gotten a little further into the process, he is seeing more opportunity than we could have realized when we decided the virtual academy was the best choice for him. He is now signed up for multiple dual enrollment credits through state universities and will be earning multiple college credits this year! At the end of the day, every person in our community plays an important role in the education of our children, especially this year! There is no right or wrong answer that will solve all concerns for our community. We are all making the decisions that are right for our families with the information that we have at our disposal. Here’s to a safe, happy and healthy school year! l

Flu Shot

FAQ’s: Myths & Facts As a physician and specialist in infectious disease, each fall I prepare and advocate for all of my patients and colleagues to get a flu vaccine. And every year, there’s some skepticism or misconceptions that I try to dispel. Here are some commonly asked questions about influenza and the flu vaccine that you may have as well:

If I haven’t gotten the flu before, do I need to get a vaccine? Why? Yes, absolutely — for the same reason you put your seat belt on every time you drive, even if you haven’t had an accident. The flu season can go until late spring — should I wait to get my vaccine? No, you should get your vaccine as soon as they’re available. The flu season begins in October, and some years we see early peaks in November and December. The earlier you are vaccinated, the better chance you’ll have of being protected from the virus throughout the year. As with any vaccine, it will take about two weeks to reach maximum antibody response.

If I got a flu shot last year, do I need to get one this year, too? Yes. There are constant changes in the makeup of the influenza virus, so getting vaccinated every year is highly advised. Is it possible to get the flu after getting the vaccine? Not all strains of the flu are in the vaccine, so there’s still a chance you may contract influenza even if you’ve been vaccinated.

However, we shouldn’t let perfect get in the way of good. Vaccination isn’t solely about prevention. There’s a generally accepted notion that vaccination may modify the severity of the flu. This is particularly important for people who are at an increased risk for complications of the flu, including those who are very young, very old, overweight or immunocompromised. The flu is a potential killer to those at risk for complications.

Are there side effects or risks of getting a flu shot? There are some minimal possible side effects of a sore arm, mild achiness, perhaps very low-grade fever. You can’t get the flu from the flu vaccine — just like you can’t get tetanus from a tetanus vaccine or hepatitis from a hepatitis vaccine. The vaccines in use this year are not live strains, so it is biologically impossible to get the flu from the flu vaccine.

I’m pregnant — should I get a flu shot? Absolutely. Pregnancy has been identified as its own category of risk for complications. I’m breastfeeding — should I get a flu shot? Absolutely. It will help prevent the flu from being transmitted to your very vulnerable young child. l

Co-Parenting and Birthdays

Birthdays are a time of celebration, but can be challenging when you are co-parenting. Thinking ahead and doing some strategic planning often helps parents get through the situation without taking away from the happiness of the day. Determining when each parent is going to celebrate the child’s birthday can be incorporated into your parenting plan or agreement up front. This allows the parents to avoid confusion, frustration and potential problems or disagreements.

When trying to come up with a plan, it is beneficial to consider the following: • Maintain the focus on your child. The day should be about your child. Don’t let any conflict between the parents put a damper on the birthday celebration. Be mindful that the day is about what the child wants and do not make it about what you, as the parent, want. •B e flexible and cooperative. Parents can work together to consider alternative solutions to how and when each parent celebrates the child’s birthday with him or her. Be flexible and consider having one parent celebrate on a different day or split the day in half and work together to make the day all about celebrating the child. Working together to come up with a way that you can all join in the celebration will benefit the child.

• T he day is about the child. Don’t make this a situation of one parent versus another. Show enthusiasm and happiness in front of your child about the birthday time he or she spends with the other parent. This will help the child avoid feeling like he or she is being pulled in two separate directions or having to pick and choose between parents. If parents are struggling to come up with a solution, the South Dakota Parenting Guidelines can help. The South Dakota Parenting Guidelines suggest that time spent with the child on their birthdate alternate annually between the parents or, if the parents can agree, the child’s birthday can be shared, with each parent spending a few hours with the child on his or her birthday. An alternating schedule allows each parent to celebrate with the child for a full day on his or her actual birthdate every other year. Sharing the day requires cooperation and a willingness to work together. No matter what plan you come up with, the central focus should be on creating a happy environment for the child on his or her special day. l

Ask These Tire Questions

When Buying Your Next Car Buying a car is exciting. However, finding the right tires for your car can be wearisome. Whether you’re buying a new or used vehicle, it’s important to understand what tires it comes with, their replacement time and costs, and potential convenience factors. There are many things to consider when inquiring about the tires for your new car. Here are questions to ask the car dealer that will help you find the right tires for you:

When Should I Replace The Tires? Because tires have such a significant impact on driving safety, it’s important to know when to replace them. Tread depth and tire age are two of the most important considerations. Tires have reached the end of their service life at 2/32nds of an inch of tread. Tires with 4/32nds of tread or less require more distance to stop your vehicle, especially when roads are wet. When it comes to replacing your tires, you should also consider the age. Minimum industry guidelines reference having your tires inspected every year

once they are 6 years of age, and to remove them from service when they reach 10 years.

What Tire Type is Best for the Car I’m Buying? Most new cars today come with all-season tires, but some sports cars come with summer tires. These kinds of tires blend high levels of dry and wet grip to complement these vehicles’ abilities, but they’re engineered for use only in warm weather. However, all-season tires are best if you live in a place with a wide variety of weather. High performance all-season tires provide a good compromise if you want year-round grip for your car. When shopping for tires, it is important to make sure that you pick the right ones for your vehicle. Understanding the tire load index can help you with this. The load index indicates how much weight a tire can carry. To find the tire’s carrying capacity, look for the load index number on the sidewall. l

What would your dream entertainment space look like?

Coming from a big family means lots of family gatherings to attend...birthday parties bring laughter, smiles, gifts, food, cake and cold drinks and most parties go off without a hitch. However, some will run into one common problem...not having enough refrigerator space and ice! Modern homes have larger refrigerators than in the past and many have smaller ice makers in them to keep the ice cubes fresher. While more and more homes are adding a small refrigerator in a lower level, another answer may be a standalone or under counter ice machine that can produce 30 or more pounds of ice in 24 hours. With a new school year rapidly approaching many of us will see small refrigerators popping up everywhere... we tend to think of these as the perfect addition to any dorm room or college apartment. However, adding a small refrigerator to your home to keep your beverages cold has multiple benefits and can free up space in the kitchen refrigerator. Many home owners are expanding their outdoor living spaces to include refrigeration and ice makers as well. Imagine the convenience of having ice right where you, your family and friends are enjoying your life! Less time spent running to the store for a bag of ice will allow you to be present for all the festivities and not miss out on any memories! Having enough refrigerator space and ice when entertaining family and friends is something we all need. Enjoy having cold beverages inside and out where ever you are at, to enjoy your event and make lots of memories for everyone. l

Don’t Be Afraid to Enter the HVAC Zone Air conditioning is among the greatest inventions of all time, along with sliced bread and Post It Notes! In the world of HVAC a somewhat recent evolution, has come in the form of HVAC zoning. The application is life changing in that it can significantly reduce energy costs and more importantly diminish the all too common domestic disputes that arise from ETP (Environmental Temperature Preferences). HVAC zoning is the management of temperatures in specified areas of your house. In this part of the world we are all too aware of the significant temperature shifts from summer to winter and we also understand the nuances of basement living. In order to more efficiently manage the very noticeable temperature variations between rooms and different levels in houses, zoning is an effective solution. Another benefit of zoning is the better temperature management in homes with vaulted ceilings, open floor plans and areas that are often unused for extended periods of times, i.e. guest rooms or basements. The goals of zoning are accomplished with automated dampers within your duct work that control the flow of cooled or heated air and independent thermostats or a central thermostat that works in tandem with area sensors.

For a zoned system to make sense and work properly is to make sure the system is one that manages the efficient operation of the blower and the duct dampers. Some systems will utilize bypass ducts and dampers controlled by barometric conditions. This approach has specific limitations that you should be prepared to discuss with your HVAC professional. Obviously setting up a zoned HVAC system is more easily accomplished if you are building a new home, but it can be established in an existing HVAC system. It is not recommended as a DIY project as it requires intricate calculations and nimble responses, all super powers possessed by your HVAC professional. The expense is not as significant as you might expect in either environment, new or old, and the annual utility savings of 20% to 40% will pay for the project in short order and no one can put a price on the domestic harmony that is achieved when each occupant can determine the temperature of his or her bedroom. l
