welcome

Happy May! I hope you are finding ways to “Embrace your Detour” while learning our new normal. I know it is really hard to be working, homeschooling, cooking (they eat so much food!), cleaning, and playing. Hopefully you can find some encouraging moments while you are at home right now. In our house, I am thankful for the extra time we get to spend together. Here at ‘Hood we are celebrating moms all month long! Local moms are telling us who has been the most influential in their parenting journey, mom tips they are using to survive right now and funny photos on how they are handling being at home. We know being stuck at home can also bring on challenges of running out of things to do. We have created our first Virtual Family Fun directory! We know you are missing going to places like the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, Washington Pavilion, Museum of Visual Materials, and the Great Plains Zoo. Make sure to check out the online options they are offering. It is something the whole family can enjoy. Do you have lots of artwork around the house? Check out the ones we are showcasing in this issue! If you would like to see your kids artwork in the next issue, send an email to info@thehooodmagazine.com. While this detour has brought on many challenges, let us know how you are embracing it! We can’t wait to be out in the community with you again as soon as it is safe!

baby

I found out I was expecting baby number three a little over a year ago. Like many expecting mom’s, I couldn’t help but look ahead to all the exciting milestones. Flashbacks of those “firsts” from my older girls brought back some of the sweetest memories and I couldn’t wait to get to experience all of those again. After Breslyn was born, the anticipation and excitement for her first year was overwhelming. I couldn’t wait to introduce her to family and friends, get her acclimated to our family routines, and celebrate those first holidays. But like most, one thing I never envisioned when I looked ahead was a global pandemic. Of course, like all parents, all we want for our children is health and safety. At the end of the day, is spending extra time at home and soaking up extra snuggles really that bad? Nope, not bad at all! While I truly am enjoying those extra snuggles, there is still a mixture of guilt, sadness and a little bit of fear that seeps in. Oh, who are we kidding- a lot of fear...that is what parents do! I feel guilty that she seems bored at the end of the day seeing the same few faces. I feel sad that she didn’t get a cute Easter dress and the inaugural “my first Easter” photo all dolled up like my other girls. I’m fearful that at times you can’t even find baby essentials in the stores. Yet, even with these mixtures of emotions, deep down I do know that we are the lucky ones and I am eternally grateful to those that have been working on the frontlines sacrificing so much.

Although at times I have felt a little cheated out of experiencing some of those memorable first year moments, just like Hood’s mission right now, we are going to “Embrace the Detour”. If you have a baby at home and find yourself getting a little down, just know that you are not alone! Whether you’re a firsttime parent or have multiple little ones at home, it is completely normal to have those moments of guilt, sadness, and fear. Long walks outside on the nice days and friendly waves to our neighbors remind me to always find the good. We hug a little tighter, snuggle a little longer, and will continue to embrace this new phase in our lives doing the best we can. Cheers to the other parents who are dealing with a whirlwind of emotions and doing the best you can do. We got this! As we go through these days of change, we want to celebrate the ways that your family has started to “Embrace the Detours”. Whether you are decorating your windows, coloring your sidewalk, celebrating in a unique way or discovering new adventures as a family, tell us all about it on The Hood Magazine Facebook or Instagram and make sure to #findthegood so we can all share this season together! l

Nurture Your Baby

Through Baby Wearing Baby carriers are an important tool in any parent’s toolbox. Today, there are a variety of baby carriers available that can meet every caregiver’s style. The carrier you choose will be dependent on a variety of factors such as family dynamics & lifestyle, cost and intended use. If you aren’t sure if babywearing is the right decision for your family, below are a few facts about babywearing for you to consider.

1 2 3

Worn Babies Cry Less

Studies as early as 1986 provided parents with a carrier and were told to wear their baby 3 extra hours per day at various states (fussy, sleepy, happy, etc) not just when crying. The results reported that the babies that were worn more time cried 43% less than the other babies…they cried 54% less during the evening hours!

Worn Babies Learn More

In kangaroo carry, baby has a 180 degree view of their environment and can scan their world, choosing what to look at, which is the very beginnings of the decision making process in their world.

Worn Babies Instill Confidence

Parents can be pro-active with their child’s needs. Babies are close enough that caregiver can see the breathing and can watch for feeding cues. When baby is close to caregiver, then they can demonstrate to baby that they will meet their emotional and physical needs before baby has to raise heart rate and emotional instability.

baby

4

Worn Babies Can Recreate the Womb Environment

When babies are able to be worn, it helps to recreate the womb environment to automatically regulate their systems. Attachment researchers all agree that in order for a baby’s emotional, intellectual and physiological systems to function optimally, the continued presence of the mother is a necessary regulatory influence. The familiar rhythm, which is imprinted on baby’s mind in the womb, now appears in the “outside womb” and calms the baby. As baby places her ear against her mother’s chest, mother’s heartbeat reminds baby of the sounds of the womb. The benefits of babywearing “remind” the baby of this and continues the motion and balance enjoyed in the womb.

5

Worn Babies Can Bond with Caregivers

Carriers are a great bonding tool for fathers, grandparents, babysitters and other caregivers. Carriers are beneficial as they allow baby to cuddle up close and forge a strong attachment and let the baby get to know the caregivers voice, movements and facial expressions.

Pamper Moms from Afar!

Baby showers are such a fun time! Thinking about that new bundle of joy soon to grace the family brings forth a whole slew of emotions. Usually it’s your family, close friends or co-workers who invite you to these showers, and it’s customary to buy things on the registry that the family needs like diapers, blankets, and of course, baby clothes! Surely these are the cutest and most fun things to buy for showers and everyone loves seeing a baby in adorable sun dresses or little tiny overalls...but what about Mom? This amazing woman has gone through the most life-changing experience physically possible for a human to undergo. Her body went through many changes and she has likely endured difficulties such as nausea, heartburn, sleepless nights, swollen feet and fatigue. Baby showers are typically about gifts for baby, but mom needs some pampering and attention as well! Here are some great unique gift options for the new mom-to-be: • Moms need comfy items to make the night-time tasks easier and more enjoyable. While moms might have thought about comfy clothes to wear during the day, she may not have thought about staying comfortable throughout the night. A new luxurious robe may

make night-time feedings easier...especially if her baby happens to spit up or pee all over her regular clothes! •N ow what about relaxing? While a great recliner is essential in the nursery, you probably won’t be buying one for a baby shower or Mother’s Day. A less expensive alternative may be a support pillow. You will want to look for a product that is able to support, but also be comfortable for the mother to use! A neck pillow can solve many problems that new moms experience by supporting her neck and head while she is relaxing in a recliner, nursing or rocking her baby. It is a small item that doesn’t take up a lot of room and really helps mom relax anytime she can! Remember, while shopping for your next gift, don’t forget about Mom. She will value it more than you know! l

Summer Fun

on a Budget

Longer days and warmer weather will soon be upon us. After spending several months tucked away in our homes practicing social distancing, many people are going to be anxious to get out and enjoy the summer. It’s likely that social distancing may be our new normal for the foreseeable future, so here are some ideas for how to make the most of your summer, while still being budget conscious. 1. G o backyard camping. Dust off your tent, get out the sleeping bags and light up your firepit. You can turn your backyard into the perfect camping adventure. 2. T ake advantage of the bike trails. You can spend a whole day exploring the trails around Sioux Falls. Load up your bikes and spend some time discovering new sites along the trail. 3. T urn your yard into a water park. Water balloons, slip and slides, mini-pools, or a sprinkler can all be fairly inexpensive activities to help keep you cool while enjoying the outdoors.

Perfect baby shower gift!

4. G o for a hike. There are several state parks around our area that have wonderful hiking opportunities. Newton Hills State Park, Palisades State Park and Good Earth State Park all offer a vast array of trails for every experience level.

Having fun this summer shouldn’t be stressful on your budget. The beginning of 2020 may have pushed back or even canceled your exciting plans for summer, but try to make the most of the extra time you get to spend with your family. l

5. W atch a movie outside. Outdoor projectors are becoming more popular... you can get one online for as little as $100. Pop some popcorn, grab some blankets and set up the projector to display the movie on your garage door. While this may be a little bigger upfront investment, it can provide hours of fun through the rest of the summer!

Family Vacation in a Time of Social Distancing

Family vacation is one of the most anticipated times of the year. With summer travel uncertain, you can use this time to plan for alternative vacations. Here are a few things you can do to make a family project of your next vacation: 1. Day trips to outdoor destinations allow for picnics and everyone sleeping in their own bed at the end of the day. Check www.travelsouthdakota.com for mini-family vacation destinations in your region of the state. Give it a theme or make it a “mystery trip” for your kids to add excitement. If you’re taking a week for vacation, do one trip every day and have everyone pick their favorite. You could find a new family favorite for future visits.

Ken Burn’s beautifully filmed documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” for inspiration. The breathtaking beauty many of these parks offer is good for everyone, and many parks have free kidoriented activities that can spark life-long hobbies or even careers. 4. P ick a dream destination. You may not be going on a big vacation this summer, so maybe you can kick it up a notch for next year. Buy a travel guide and start budgeting and planning for exactly what you want to do and see. Lots of museums offer online tours to help you decide if you want to go in person.

2. Go camping. Kids love camping and sites will probably be open this summer. If you don’t camp, make it a project to learn how. Get started with a Google search for instructional Don’t shoot for perfection, and articles or check YouTube Learnremember, your attitude goes a ing for some excellent “how to” Need to get up and move long way towards setting the tone. videos. Abby recalled that many restaurants provide small boxes of crayons to keep youngsters busy while their families eat, and then throw them away. So she called local restaurants and within a few weeks, she had a number of eateries saving their used crayons for her. Abby also created a website and addressed community groups to ask for donations of old crayons. With the help of her younger sister, she sanitized, dried, melted and then remolded the crayons into shapes such as animals, flowers and even robots. She then offered her recycled crayons to hospitals, Boys and Girls Clubs, park programs, and other nonprofit organizations that serve children in need. In addition to her crayons, Abby assembled more than 300 bags filled with science, math, art, reading and technology/

teen by  Tiffny Hagan, Happy Thought Books

Memorializing Memories It’s Springtime! This time of year, we love to celebrate our student’s special accomplishments, prepare our high school seniors for graduations, and commemorate their journey as they head into the next chapter. With those milestones, parents often look for a meaningful keepsake to give our children. Below are some great gift options for parents to create those keepsakes without having to be super crafty or eloquent with their words. Photobooks are a great way to showcase favorite photos of your student in the activities they participated in, fun times with friends and family and special birthdays. Photobooks from companies like Shutterfly or Snapfish are an easy project parents can assemble online. With different choices for size and style, parents can reminisce while selecting favorite photos for their custom book. If you’re feeling even a little crafty, scrapbooks are a fun and personal gift. Searches of online sites like Amazon and Etsy even produce kits complete with album pages, stickers, photo holders and pens. Affix your favorite photos, a playbill from a musical the student starred in, and even bulkier items like a graduation tassel. You can even add a handwritten note for that extra personal touch. Another option is to create a personalized memory book that is part journal and part scrapbook. These unique books do not require a lot of work for the parent and they are the perfect way to gather words of encouragement, along with love and advice, from family and friends. You can start your creation online by uploading a favorite photo and then when the book is delivered, offer friends and family members a page from the book to share a special message with the graduate. Collect the pages and add them back into the book and you have a meaningful keepsake to give. Celebrating our high school seniors and commemorating their journey as they head into the next chapter is important. It’s a milestone for them. From here, they get to move into the world to decide what it is they want and who they want to be. A meaningful keepsake from their parents is the perfect way to show them how much they are loved and to remind them of the impact they’ve already had on the world. l

Mom TIPS

Now more than ever we need to support each other in every way possible. Difficult times can unite or divide people...but our community will not be divided! We are a community of parents and we will fiercely love each other through thick or thin. We asked a few local moms if they would share their best advice...Mom to Mom. We see you, we hear you and we are here for you!

April Meyerink Amy Rans

Take a moment to do something for yourself every day, and don’t feel guilty about it. Self-care is important to helping us be the best moms we can be right now. It doesn’t have to be big - a glass of wine, exercise, 5 minutes in a room by yourself, a short walk, a few deep breaths, etc.

Amy Hix

The biggest thing getting me through is trying to set realistic goals. Instead of saying, “I will get the house cleaned today,” try saying “Today, let’s organize craft supplies.” Take it day by day, task by task, and remember our children’s health and well-being is the most important thing!

We are committed to improving lives, through good times and challenging times. These amazing moms are improving lives every day and we are grateful for all they do!

22 |

May 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

It’s hard to remember that our job is to be their parent and not their friend, but when that day comes where you no longer have to parent... you realize you have just earned a best friend for life.

Lisa Carlson

If your family is on quarantine this would be the ideal time to reconnect with one another. However, if you’re an essential worker make sure to prioritize your time between working out of the home, keeping up with your children’s school work, and always making time for self-care.

Nikki Sullivan

Alecia Schumacher

Get Your Tush Out of Bed! Set an alarm (or two) and get started early. If you are not an early bird by nature, challenge yourself to get up 10 min earlier tomorrow and then the next day get up 10 minute earlier than the day before. I promise you this is a game changer. We all crave more time, but we’re given the same 24 hours in a day. It’s a matter of how we use them. If you’re up binging Netflix until midnight catching up on Tiger King, but struggling to get yourself out of bed in the morning, do a gut check on priorities. One uninterrupted extra hour in the morning can change the course of your day.

My tip for working moms during this craziness is do not feel guilty for having to take your kiddos to daycare. Healthcare doesn’t stop. I struggled feeling guilty when schools were closed but I was still dropping off my kids at their “school”. I have to constantly remind myself that they are doing everything they can to keep the kiddos and themselves safe. I constantly have to remind myself not to feel guilty.

Kelli Zimmer Gallagher

It is ok that things are not all in order. Take each day and set goals of the most important things to get done. It is ok to mess up and it is ok if things are not always perfect. Enjoy the time with family.

Taking advantage of the outdoors in different ways! Being able to go on walks. It has been a great time to learn new science projects like Mentos in soda is always a fun one! Then the classic things like bubbles and sidewalk chalk my kids cannot get enough of! I try to stay as positive as possible and cherish the time I am able to spend with my children even though I am working.

Kathy Horstman

Joane Moumy

For me, the best advice I can give other moms is to stick to a schedule. I know that this isn’t possible for everyone but that’s what works best for my family. We are a family that has always been on the go, so with outside activities coming to a halt, we have tried to spend as much time outside as we can. We plan dinners together and everyone is involved in the process. We’ve also made a point to write a letter to a friend or family member each week to let them know we miss them and thinking about them! We try to take things one day at a time as we know everyone is in the same situation. We are all in this together!

24 |

May 2020 | thehoodmagazine.com

As parents of a tween/teen I feel we are in an odd spot, they are old enough to survive on their own but still need us. They are missing so many of those social milestones and connections right now, so we have made weekly zoom meetings for their groups of friends. This way they can at least continue to talk and be a part of each other’s lives. We have also sent cards or dropped off cards/gifts to friends that we miss seeing. In our house every day is not a good day but every day we find something about the day that was good. Stay strong, healthy and safe.

Jessica Stienstra

I think right now, we just need to remember to give each other, and ourselves, a little bit of grace. Love your families, be kind to others, stay connected on video calls and know that this too shall pass.

Children thrive on knowing the expectations for each day! Create a schedule together with your child where they can tell you when and where they will need a break or change of activity within the day. Build time within your day to spend quality time with each child in the home individually. It doesn’t have to be long or elaborate. Reading a book, playing a game, going for a walk, or just talking one-on-one with your child will help them feel safe and secure as well as create some fun memories!

Stacey Sorlien

Try to stay on a regular schedule, even though we all know it’s challenging. Embrace the silver lining... look and enjoy the quality time with family. Look at every meal time as an opportunity to try a new meal or bring back an old family favorite... we all feel like we have cooked 365 meals in the last month! Because I work for the pork industry, I have to mention to try new creative pork entrées! It’s very inexpensive, very versatile, healthy and a nutritious protein to enjoy with your families.

Mikela Iverson

We made sure to set a schedule with our girls right when this first started on March 16th. We get school work done by noon and then we have fun! We exercise together, go for walks, bake, watch movies, do projects or watch silly videos on YouTube. If I need a break or just need to be alone, I’ll do a workout or go for a walk. It perks my mood right up! A zoom happy hour with girlfriends is always good too! We have always enjoyed doing things in the community - playing soccer, visiting the Outdoor Campus, the Zoo, parks - we miss going to the park! This has been a bit tough for us but we’ve been finding fun things to do together at home. Something that I keep telling myself is to enjoy this time and soak up all this extra time with my girls. My oldest is 13, we only have 5 more years with her at home, so I’m trying to really enjoy this time and think of it as a blessing.

Becky Squyer:

I was 12 when my father finally told me where Steely Dan coined their band name. I had begged him since he’d introduced me to the album “Can’t Buy A Thrill” years prior. A couple of years ago, my father died just 40 days after his cancer diagnosis when my daughter was just over two years old. He was my best friend, my coach for 15 years, and an unabashedly honest man. My husband and I are raising a strong, smart, independent, and beautiful young lady that is full of challenging and difficult inquiries, problems and feelings - just as every child is. As a parent, I attribute much of my parenting style to my father (though I didn’t much realize that until recently). I am honest, I do my best to feel her feels right along with her, and I welcome her drama and empathy (which sometimes takes a lot of deep breathing). My father did the same. As a mother, it is a life-long goal of mine to lead with discipline but compassion because you can see in a child’s eyes, when you really look at them, that they want to know all about the things you have already been taught.

Stacey Wrightsman:

Patient. Gentle. Selfless. My constant and my forever friend. This is my Mom.

Growing up as an only child in small town Midwest I had the honored luxury of being blessed with two amazing parents. They had my back, attending choir concerts and band performances, volleyball and basketball games, speech meets and celebrating all the joys a young adult an experience, this is what I knew as a young person growing up. Their unconditional love was evident. As life’s changes and challenges came across my path, my mother stepped in as the soft shoulder to cry on when my heart was broken and a listening ear at all hours of the day and night when my mind couldn’t find peace... I am so blessed to have Mom in my life. Even now, as I have a family of my own, there is hardly a day that goes by when I do not start and end my day hearing her voice. Every moment is special. Every bit of unsolicited advice is arguably important… and there is a lot of that! (Grin.) There might not be a singular impactful moment when I realized that Mom was my role model, but rather, all the little memories and moments that help make me the person I am, the wife I’ve become, and the mom I’ve only dreamed of being- it is all because of her example. I celebrate her today and every day and I only hope and pray that I can be a fraction of the amazing mother to my children as she has been to me.

Heather Kittelson

Jen Rothenbuehler

Melissa Johnson:

Being a mom is the most important work I’ve ever done. Raising humans is a careful task. I want to raise my girls with confidence and with the knowledge of their own worthiness. I want to raise my son with the same. I have four children and they are all so different! As much as anything, I want to raise them all to be compassionate, empathetic, and kind. They are my inspiration to get up every day, and knowing I set an example for them helps me make daily decisions, from the simple to the complex.

Sarah Kurtenbach

Lisa Groon:

I first met Alicia Fonder during my childbirth prep class over 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. She’s a lactation consultant and childbirth educator with SD Babies and the most calm and gentle human I’ve ever met. With patience and grace, she welcomed me into a world I knew nothing about and is always ready to offer a listening ear. She introduced me to the Sioux Falls Food Co-op, physiologic birth, breastfeeding, and a million other things that have led me to experience positive births and peaceful parenting. I’m so grateful to have her friendship and wisdom and I think things would have looked much different without her.

Colleen Halbur:

When my daughter Cassandra was born, we found out that she had symbrachydactyly, which is a congenital abnormality. In Cassandra’s case, she was missing all of the fingers on her right hand and part of the thumb. From the first moment I held her I was flooded with emotion: love for her, hope, fierce protectiveness, guilt, anger, fear, and sadness.

Tracy Hinkkanen

The next day, two of my best girlfriends came to visit. I shared my heart with them. All of demons that I had been fighting in my head. They hugged me, they hugged my baby, and then they helped me fight those demons. Those women, my friends, meet me where I was, recognized my struggle, and then fought with me to see the love and the good. Because that is what women can do for each other. We can see the struggle, the pain, the loneliness; and then we fight. After my friends left, I was stronger, I was happier, and I was a better mom. Not just to my feisty, spicy and sweet Sandy, but to my other kids as well. I had showed my friends my fears and my pain, and they didn’t try to tell me that my feelings didn’t matter; they showed me the goodness that I had and I know that no matter what life throws at me, I have friends of the heart.

8 Sneaky Ways to

Keep Kids Moving

As a parent, you can help kids incorporate physical activity throughout the day without having to “exercise.” Physical activity doesn’t have to be completed in a school P.E. class, on the playground or even at the gym pumping iron. Use these eight easy ways to encourage kids to be more active throughout the day.

Dance and dress

Encourage your kids to energize first thing in the morning by cranking up the tunes in their room and dancing while getting dressed.

Move while waiting

Throughout the day while kids are waiting, encourage them to stand up and sway from side to side, pace, perform arm circles or other movements.

Switch up your bike ride or walk

Make your bike ride or walk around your neighborhood an adventure. Play “I Spy” or do a scavenger hunt and look for items like pinecones, leaves and flowers.

Daily stretches

Take the long way

Stairs, stairs and more stairs

Chores challenge

Re-energize your kids by doing some stretches mid-morning and mid-afternoon. They can be as simple as touching your toes or as complex as balancing on one leg with your hands folded at your chest.

In addition to taking the long way, take the stairs whenever possible. Better yet, if there are stairs outside, take breaks and get outside for fresh air that will reinvigorate your kids while they are moving their bodies.

Stand up

Encourage kids to stand up whenever possible during the day. Allow kids the option to stand while reading or working on an assignment.

Regardless of where you’re headed, take your kids on the longest route to increase the number of steps they take. Add in a fun element by having them crouch down, penguin waddle, walk on their tiptoes or other imaginative movements.

Help kids to find sneaky ways to move more while doing their chores. Make it fun! Put on some music and encourage them to dance while they clean their room or help wash the car. Suggest that every time they finish a chore, they do five high jumps, sit-ups or frog jumps. l

E R I T DIY TER N A L P by Discount Tire

There are a variety of ways to recycle a tire, so why not have some fun with it? Make a bold statement in your garden this summer with a DIY tire planter.

Old tires make the perfect planters because they’re sturdy and deep enough for plants to take root. You can use them as standalone planters, stack them into cascading planter gardens, build up a huge vegetable garden, or even hang them on a wall or fence. Utilizing tires to create your own garden is not only a smart idea, but it’s also environmentally friendly. Plus, it’s a fun project for the whole family to be involved in. All you’ll need is an old tire, primer, spray paint, potting soil and some flowers. Step 1: First, find a good old tire that is well worn. If the tire is dirty, make sure to wipe it out so you’re starting with a clean canvas. Step 2: Get the tire ready for painting with a spray primer suitable for rubber. This will help the paint stick to the tire and coat evenly. Step 3: Paint the tire your desired color using a regular indoor or outdoor spray paint. Bright colors are recommended because black tires absorb more of the sun’s energy and can become hot if placed in direct sunlight. Painting the tire with light colors reflects light and helps keep it cooler. Step 4: Place your tire in it’s new location and fill it with potting soil and add your favorite plants! All that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy the beauty of the planter with family and friends! l

Sunshine = Grilling Even though grilling has become a year-round activity, there are those of us that see sunshine and longer days as the perfect opportunity to fire up the outdoor kitchen. Nothing signifies the arrival of spring like the aroma of burgers, brats or steak on the grill! In today’s grilling world, we have so many choices of equipment to prepare that delicious piece of protein. Two of the most popular choices today are the long-time favorite propane grill and the trendy wood pellet option...both have their advantages. Propane grills, having been around since the 1950’s, and are a common staple on many homeowner’s patios. They provide a quick, almost instant, heat source to prepare a delicious summer meal. Their speed makes them the perfect cooking solution when you

get home after a full day and time is a factor. In recent years, wood pellet grills have become extremely popular and are another fantastic option for your grilling needs. Flavor and precision are the biggest draws to a wood pellet grill. While a wood pellet grill does not provide the speed of a propane grill, they make up for it with their many flavor options that will add a “WOW” factor to your meal. The slow cooking and low-temp smoking abilities of a wood pellet grill are what excite many of today’s backyard chefs. Whether it’s a tender pork loin, fall-off-the-bone ribs, or a juicy prime rib the wood pellet grill will not disappoint. No matter which grill is best for you, remember the most important thing is to get out and enjoy cooking a meal while the beautiful days are here. Happy grilling! l

HVAC Health Check

Given the circumstances of the Coronavirus pandemic and the significant amount of time we have all committed to the indoors, it is worth noting that even under normal circumstances it is estimated we spend on average 90% of our lives indoors. The Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air pollution among the top four environmental hazards in the country. Your home’s HVAC system is capable of spreading diseases, viruses, germs and pollutants. Indoor air quality is now more important than ever. Specific segments of the population that especially need to be considered when managing indoor air quality are: • Infants to 16 year olds • Adults over 60 years old • Immuno-compromised individuals, pregnant women, persons with chronic respiratory illness, and people recovering from surgery, illness or undergoing/recovering from cancer treatment • Pet owners Respiratory moisture from sneezing and coughing can travel to your HVAC system and be recirculated throughout your home’s ductwork. Viruses are smaller than bacteria and viruses cannot survive without a host. Mold, a biological growth, can find a hospitable environment in your HVAC system. Three things are

needed for mold to survive and possibly become a serious contaminant concern. First, it needs a food source and that can present itself as simple as flaked off skin that has entered the HVAC system. The next is moisture, readily present in the form of condensation. And finally the lack of ultraviolet light. These are the conditions that require mitigation by homeowners and perhaps an HVAC professional in an escalated situation. Just as ultraviolet light systems are used in the sterilization of medical instruments and food processing equipment, it is used by an HVAC professional to irradiate contaminants in your HVAC ductwork and equipment. It has always been recommended that an HVAC system be inspected a minimum of twice a year. Consider spending a little more on the quality of your air filter and the frequency of changing it out when respiratory illnesses are elevated in our area. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always consult an HVAC professional to keep your home and your family safe and healthy! l

Embracing Change in

Vehicle Technology

As the saying goes, “Change is Inevitable,” but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. With advancements in technology, it’s amazing the standard or optional equipment that vehicles come with.

38 |

Lane departure warning is becoming common in vehicles. This feature lets drivers know when they are starting to leave their intended lane. Generally, lane departure warnings activate after reaching a certain speed (usually over 30-40 miles per hour), and with the aid of front-facing cameras, they monitor when your vehicle is starting to touch or cross a lane marker. Depending on the vehicle, an audible alert will sound, the steering wheel will be sent pulses that the driver can feel, and the vehicle will correct itself.

A Collision Mitigating Braking System is yet another advancement in technology to help keep drivers safe. This feature sends alerts to the driver to help reduce the likelihood of a collision or to reduce the severity of an impact when a collision is unavoidable. Depending on your vehicle’s distance from other vehicles or pedestrians, alerts will be sent to help indicate your need to stop or slow down. Alerts start as visual and audible alerts but can graduate to light braking, and in some cases, strong braking by the vehicle’s system.

Another great technological advance is adaptive cruise control. This feature lets the driver set the cruise control but factors in keeping a constant distance from the vehicle in front of them. In order to maintain a safe distance, this feature will adjust the cruise speed for you, so you don’t have to touch the pedals or adjust the cruise control speed yourself.

Our vehicles are safer and more technologically advanced than ever before. It’s important to not rely solely on the technology, but rather use these items as tools to help keep you and your family safe while on the road. Lean into change...because after all it is inevitable! l
