7 Ways to Ace Your M.I.D.T.E.R.M Exams By: Stanton Hare, Campus Reporter

@TypicalStann

It’s that stressful time of the year again: MIDTERMS.

‘Do Not Disturb’ mode so you won’t be tempted by your notifications to unlock your phone. Trust me. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are going to be there after the exam. Besides, it’ll feel better to post a 4.0 on your It’s when students clear the Yard and flood the libraries Snapchat story when it is all said and done. to try and learn as much as they can so they can pass their make-it-or-break-it tests. Before you overwork your brain and pass out in the middle of the night, here Take a break. are seven tips that make your midterm week easier to No matter what, do not burn yourself out. Like other deal with. muscles, your brain needs time to relax so it can retain all new information. Take a 10-minute break every Manage your time. hour to rejuvenate yourself for the next set of notes. When you are first given the test date, put it on your calendar so you can keep track of how many days you have until the test. Also, make a study plan. Instead of cramming your short-term memory with seven weeks worth of information, take an hour a day to read the textbook and review your notes. This way, the night before the test you can sleep for eight hours and be energized for the next day.

Include your classmates. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! There is someone else in your class that is asking the same questions as you or knows how the answer them. So, use them to your advantage. Schedule a time where you can meet with your peers and talk about the materials that are going to be on the exam. However, remember it is not a party. Keep your study group small with 2-3 people, so you limit the number of distractions around you. Also, do not be afraid to branch out. Studying is a great way to see new faces and make more friends.

Disconnect from technology.

Eat right. Most people forget that your diet directly affects your attitude and mindset when approaching the next test. Junk foods and fast-food restaurants will cause fatigue and cause you to lose track on what is on the agenda. Start eating “brain foods” like fruits, vegetables and grains to feed your body and mind the right nutrients.

Read it again.

Do not settle for limited information. Be sure to re-read your notes and textbook to catch any misconceptions about the topics you are learning. You would hate to get to a question about something that you failed to remember because you skimmed over the work.

Maintain your confidence. On the day of the test, keep your focus. All the work you’ve put in for the test will pay off. So, do not psych yourself out. You are prepared and ready for an A!

When it is time to study, put your phone on to follow each step, you’re guaranteed to get an A. Good luck and see you at Homecoming!

NATIONAL NEWS EDITION Twenty one people are dead and over 500 are missing as the historic wildfires in California’s wine country continue to batter the state. Almost two dozen fires have been burning since Sunday, prompting officials in northern california counties to order mandatory evacuations of 20,000 people. According to forestry officials, most fires are started by humans in some way, but these blazes have been especially devastating due to high winds, dry weather conditions, and dried out vegetation. This is California’s deadliest wildfire in 14 years, and the death toll is expected to rise. The 2017 Major League Baseball Playoffs began last week, kicking off the three and a half week race to the World Series title. The New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks clinched spots in their divisions’ series after emerging victorious from their respective must-win wild card games. The Yankees went on to beat the Cleveland Indians in a five-game series, while the Boston Red Sox played, and were eliminated, by the Houston Astros in four games.The Los Angeles Dodgers ended the Diamondbacks’ run three games, while the reigning champions, the Chicago Cubs, played four games against Washington D.C.’s Nationals, with their fifth taking place on Thursday. The American and National League champions will be decided by Oct. 21 and 22 respectively, and on Nov. 1, the 2017 MLB season will end and a World Series Champion will be named. Multiple reports of sexual harassment surfaced against profound Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, following an article published by the The New York Times last Thursday. According to the article, Weinstein had been paying off women her sexually harassed in exchange for their silence for three decades. A list of more than a dozen women, including actresses like Angelina Jolie and Cara Delevingne, accused the producer of sexual harassment, ranging from unwanted advances in hotel rooms to forced sex. On Sunday, The Weinstein Company fired Weinstein, which he co-founded, and his wife, Georgina Chapman, announced on Tuesday that she plans to leave him. As one of the top HBCUs in academics and fashion, Howard University can come with high standards— and homecoming is no exception. Homecoming is a time filled with performances, reunions and ultimately pop outs. Staying fashionable can be expensive but thankfully, it doesn’t always have to be. Stores in the DMV and online shops can help students showcase the fashion for which the university is credited.

Week #6 MEAC Power Rankings: Who Runs the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference? By: Lawrence Dow, Sports Editor

in the league. As of now, A&T is on top of the MEAC– it’ll be interesting to see which team will be the first to push them in conference play. The MEAC’s second-ranked team, North Carolina Central University, is ranked 25th in the Stats FCS Rankings. This ranking will only concern itself with the to ramp it up if they want to continue winning in the MEAC. top five teams in the MEAC. Game of The Week This week’s game to watch belongs to the Hampton Institute vs. Norfolk State, as both teams are coming in with a lossless record. Yankee Johnson looks to continue to lead the Hampton offense, although Hampton’s strength rests in its defense. The institute ranks second in scoring defense and third in overall defense. Norfolk State will look to its second-ranked scoring offense and quarterback Juwan Carter to overcome the stout Hampton. In the battle of offense versus defense, I’ll always stick to offense. I’ll take Norfolk State in a tight game vs Hampton Institute.

Norfolk State and Hampton University were so close when it came to this ranking, but they play this week and that should decide which team is in the elite class of the MEAC. Norfolk State looks to continue to ride it’s explosive offense to in-conference wins. Howard University fell just short of upsetting NC Central and will look to run the table for the remainder of their in-conference play. Howard, which ranks second in total offense, will have to cut down on turnovers if they want to be truly elite. Howard’s defense has been sublime these last two weeks and if the offense can live up to their potential, this team should rise much higher on these rankings by the end of the year.

Power Rankings North Carolina A&T has been the class of the conference for the last couple of years. This year they look better than ever, undefeated and ranked 15th in the Stats FCS top 25 rankings. A&T brings the complete package sporting the top offense and defense

So far, the MEAC looks just about the same this year as it has every year. Going forward, the question will be if any team can end the North Carolina stranglehold on the MEAC. Who will represent the MEAC at the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta this December?

Op-Ed: Yes, I Talk About Routes. By: Brianna Sims, Asst. Sports Editor

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was scrutinized by social media, the NFL, and most new organizations on Wednesday. This was after comments by Newton in relation to a question asked by reporter Jourdan Rodrigue. Newton responded to Rodrigue’s technical question about one of his receivers improved route running by saying “it’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

@bri_simsxo

Everyday when I went to work, I thought about the Cari Champions and Jemele Hills of the world. I thought about how refreshing it was as a younger black girl to see those faces in those types of spaces. I was inspired by the thought of a little black girl one day seeing my name or face and feeling that same empowerment.

unusual for me to be watching or understanding sports as a girl. As I got older and began to play sports myself, my eyes were opened to the misogynistic views that come with being a woman in the world of sports. I had the pleasure of interning at one of the top sports media companies this past summer. I was grateful for the opportunity, but at times it would be uncomfortable because I was the only one that looked like me. I was not only the one black person in my office, but also the only woman. I had to deal with microaggressions in the workplace on a weekly basis. Some days it was a side eye whenever I brought up Lebron and his performance in the finals. Some days it was being challenged just because I was the only female intern. I would be forced to prove that I knew just as much as the male interns did. I learned to channel the questioning into fuel.

It was troubling to know that not only do we have to prove, as black woman, that we deserve to be in our respective fields, but we must often walk on eggshells in order to avoid offending those who continuously offend us. Despite the issues we face, I encourage any black woman aspiring to go into sports media to continue to confidently occupy the environment you are in. Continue to support women who play and work in sports. It’s not funny that you are an avid sports fan. It’s not funny that you know how to do your job and do it well. They need you.
