E

veryone loves to get mail. There is a psychological connection between the mail we get and our self worth. The more mail you get, the more you are loved or are some sort of VIP. There is nothing more exciting than coming home and opening up the mail box and seeing a letter from a friend or relative. And then came Email. It is certainly correct to say that Email has hurt the Post Office’s bottom line. And their bottom line was already at the bottom of the bottom. As a business owner I love to get mail at the office because our mail carrier Carol brings me checks. She actually feels bad when she brings me bills and no checks. I am always glad to see Carol no matter what she brings. She is a testament to the U.S. Postal Service. She is on time and very friendly. Not all the postal carriers over the years have been so. But Carol is the cream of the crop in my eyes. And then came Email. Every morning I come into work and boot up my email and over 1000 pieces of electronic mail wait to be read, downloaded or deleted. Oh, I have a spam folder which catches many of the unwanted characters but much of it just passes through the filter like mosquitoes through an old rusty porch screen. Let me give you a taste of what’s on my email menu today. 1) I can get a hot air balloon ride for only $189, reg. $399. 2) Weird Wine Lowers Blood Pressure ... but you have to subscribe to the newsletter to find out which wine it is of course. 3) I got another email from Victoria’s Secret. I swear,

it’s for my wife. 4) Apparently it’s “my big chance” to make millions at some sort of business venture. Good thing I am tapped out. 5) I can buy a book to help me Decipher my Dreams. Problem is I always fall asleep when I read. That’s a bit of a conundrum. 6) Apparently a company called “BooginHead” can help me with my problems with my small children. I could have used that before my daughters got into their 20s. I wonder if BooginHead brews craft beer? 7) Someone wants to buy my Timeshare. 8) A guy named Joel sent me an email with a new “Sweet Tooth” diet. Really, Sweet Tooth Diet. Moving on. 9) From the New England Journal of Medicine: “Oral GS-5806 Activity in a Respiratory Syncytial Virus Challenge Study.” Whoa, way past my pay grade. 10) Yes, I got the Viagra email and the Canadian Drugs email, too. I suppose I get more emails than the normal business since I am in the media. But I never feel more important when I get more emails. I do enjoy correspondence from my friends and clients. If I scroll down a few hundred emails I am sure I can find one from a friend. Oh, here’s one “Are you playing golf Sunday?.” I have to send regrets since my wife Niki is having back surgery Friday. I have to be around to make her grilled cheese as she recovers this weekend. Keep her in your thoughts. Send some healing vibes her way. But I am just warning you, if you send an email, I can’t guarantee I will read it right away. I have to wade through this week’s “Coupon Deals” first. I want to invite all of you to our 28th Natural Living Expo on september 28 in Webster Groves. We have a great line-up of exhibitors and we will have 500 free reusable tote bags to hand out, as well as Chipotle gift cards. You can also win a trip to Trout Lodge YMCA of the Ozarks and some Amtrak train tickets. And how about some wine, craft beer and food samples. Enjoy free health screenings and chair massages. See page 5 for more details! See you at the Expo!

Focus On a Wellness Career At Missouri College

W

ith so much interest in healthy lifestyles today, there are many avenues someone who would like to enter this field could pursue professionally. Missouri College offers several programs focused on healthcare and wellness careers as well as other fields. Whether you’re looking for hands-on involvement in caring for patients’ healthcare needs or in work that supports those needs in an office setting, Missouri College can help you develop the essential skills and knowledge you need to get started. Their programs put you in settings that simulate real world environments to help you experience what the workplace is really like. And you can learn from instructors who specialize in what they teach – including many practicing professionals. Areas that are especially relevant for those who want to focus on wellness are the school’s Massage Therapy, Fitness Training, and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs. They not only teach the range of techniques and skills needed to do the job but also help prepare you to work one-on-one with people, assessing their needs and adapting your therapies to the individual. This requires empathy, good listening skills, and confidence in your judgment and abilities – all qualities Missouri College can help you acquire through hands-on learning activities, clinical experience, and supportive, knowledgeable instructors.

Significant growth is expected in those fields through 2022. The need for Occupational Therapy Assistants is projected to increase by 41%, with 23% higher demand for Massage Therapists, and 13% for Fitness Trainers.* In addition to the popular wellness fields, Missouri College offers many other healthcare and business programs. The school has been providing career-focused training and education for over 45 years, preparing thousands of people for challenging and rewarding professional opportunities. Missouri College is located at 1405 S. Hanley Road in Brentwood, Missouri. hen we talk about our soul, a common universal symbol or image used to refer to this soul self is the image or symbol of a child. We all have an inner child that exists inside of us, waiting to be discovered and brought out into our lives. Sometimes this child feels happy and safe to express who she really is, what she really feels and when we experience a connection with this spirit child in this way, we feel aligned both inside and out, sometimes people call this our “flow”. Sometimes this inner child is upset or distressed in some way, and any time we experience a reaction towards something that seems out of proportion to the event happening, we can be certain that we are experiencing this wounded child inside, who is trying to get our attention in some way so that we can attend to her needs. Our earliest experiences as children are the determinants for how we function as an adult in our day to day lives and relationships. Whenever a child has an experience, either a one-time event or an ongoing theme, it “programs” them for later, similar emotional experiences in life. A child’s defense system will always kick in to manage those painful feelings unless there is someone strong on the scene to comfort and assure that child that their world will be ok. If this early emotional conditioning is never fully addressed and healed on a deep level, it becomes the framework for operating emotionally even as a grown adult, in any similar type of situation. And because our feelings, programs, defense system, inner child all exist in a part of us that is nonlinear and doesn’t know time (past, present or

future), all it takes is a brief resemblance emotionally to this early experience that was never addressed, and the person (now an adult) will react emotionally in the same way that they reacted when they were young. Early emotional programming is the reason why people’s lives are often derailed when they experience a divorce or death of a loved one, or the loss of a relationship or job- it can often feel like “the end of the world” as these present day losses trigger these past programs and unresolved feelings from early on. Remember, feelings never fully go away if they are not addressed the first time around and experienced all the way through. In fact, they just continue to build up inside of our bodies as unexpressed energy looking for a way to get out, and generally do so in one of two ways: either this unexpressed energy gets passed on to our children, who pay for their parents’ inability to deal with their own unresolved feelings or our bodies absorb this energy and we become physically ill. n Sept. 27, 2014, the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council will sponsor the 3rd annual Green Apple Day of Service. This global event will bring together thousands of students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members for education, community events, and service projects to contribute to the goal that all schools have clean and healthy air to breathe, conserve energy and resources and inspire their students to create a fulfilling sustainable future. Projects will be as varied as the schools and include everything from a “coffee chat” to discussing ways to make the school more environmentally sustainable, to creating a campus rain or vegetable garden, to giving educational presentations and tours, but all will stress the importance of a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly learning environment. After all, it’s not just WHAT we learn, but also WHERE we learn that matters. Crossroads College Preparatory School participated in the Green Apple Day of Service in 2012 and 2013. This small, land-locked urban school on DeBaliviere Avenue in the Central West End strives to create a “green” learning environment. They achieved LEED Platinum certification in 2010 for their school addition and renovation project. In 2012, they were named a Green Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Crossroads participated in the first Green Apple Day of Service in 2012 by creating a second

native plant pollinator garden with the help of Pizzo Associates. A team of 70 students, parents, faculty, administrators and friends of Crossroads joined together to plant the garden in record time. In 2013, the architectural firm HOK worked with Crossroads administration, teachers and students to develop and conduct interactive tours of their LEED certified building and native plant rain garden that focused on the health and educational benefits of a green school and demonstrated how the building and garden are incorporated into the curriculum. Over 100 visitors learned all aspects of creating a healthy, sustainable learning environment that includes natural day lighting, the use “green” cleaning products, indoor air quality, solar power, recycling, and acoustics. Crossroads was one of nearly 60 schools in the St. Louis region to participate last year. Their efforts combined with those of other schools throughout the world to make quite an impact. According to the Center for Green Schools, the 2,091 communities that hosted projects in 2013 included schools in 41 countries and all 50 states in the U.S.; they engaged 203,677 project volunteers, and impacted 2,888,022 students. The 2014, Green Apple Day of Service will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27. Many local schools will be planning events on this date, or within a two-week window of this date, and would welcome your participation. he St. Louis Rams are greening our operations, from recycling and waste reduction to energy efficiency and the use of recycled materials. Since our participation in the NFL’s first carbon neutral game in 2005 against the Philadelphia Eagles, we have been committed to establishing and growing our Green Platform with the intention of identifying authentic opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint. We currently facilitate and promote single-stream recycling during all Rams home games on our Concourse and Terrace levels, in all of our suites, in the Bud Light Party Zone and at additional key points of entry/exit. In 2008, we began printing our game tickets on recycled paper stock. Beginning in 2012, we offset 100% of the electricity used during all of our home games at the Edward Jones Dome. We also offset 100% of our team travel to and from all away games with carbon offsets. Similar to our success at the Edward Jones Dome, we have implemented a recycling program at Rams Park, home of the St. Louis Rams. We have encouraged our staff to recycle paper and plastic by offering personal

receptacles for office/cubicle use. We are committed to reducing our energy and waste throughout the season and are Pure Power Gold Certified through Ameren Missouri Pure Power. This means that we will help prevent the release of approximately 342,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, which is equal to taking 30 cars off the road for a year The Rams will host our fifth annual Green Game on September 21 against the Dallas Cowboys. As a part of this game, we will offset 100% of the electricity used at the Edward Jones Dome. We will also offset Dallas Cowboys team travel to and from St. Louis and fan travel to and from the Edward Jones Dome using carbon offsets. We will highlight the importance of sustainability throughout the game with a Green Expo in Baer Park prior to the game and in-game features throughout. We will feature a series of events throughout the week leading up to the Green Game.

Parasitologists in New Orleans for Hunger Games:

Parasites and Cancer Metabolism By Simon Yu, MD

T

he 89th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists was held in New Orleans, Louisiana in the summer of 2014. Most of the several hundred attendees were from universities around the United States and other countries. They were immunology/parasite/biology department teaching faculties including Masters and Ph.D. candidate students. Also, there were US government officials affiliated with the Department of Agriculture or environmental agencies. I did not see any private practice medical doctors. Going to a parasitology conference is not the most exciting thing to do for the summer. But when the location of the conference was in New Orleans, I decided to go and check it out. If I wouldn’t get much out of the conference, at least, I’d like to have a fine dining experience as an excuse to attend. The conference was quite intense with over 200 presentations, mainly 15 minute sessions, during four days in multiple rooms. The main topics were Ecology, Life Cycles and Epidemiology, Immunology, Biochemistry and Physiology, Malaria Symposium, Host Parasite Interactions, Taxonomy, Systematics and Physiology, Chemotherapy, Drug Resistance and Vector Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology. Did I get any useful information to help my patients by attending this parasite conference? Most of the lectures were academic/basic science oriented with no direct clinical implications for medical doctors. However, there was some information that might be of interest: Our ancestry might have come from the evolution of the single cell Protozoa. Parasites may not be what you think. Parasites are the dominant animal on the planet with the greatest bio-mass. The earliest parasites are called animallike Protists: The Protozoa. About 1.5 billion years ago, the protozoa were unicellular and developed the colonial organization to form an advanced complex life. Protozoa are considered the first carnivore. One of the lecturers pointed out that the original Hunger Games was started by lowly parasites. The simple Hunger Games of a single cell hunter swallowing its prey (phagocytosis) started with protozoa. The most common pathogenic protozoa parasites include: Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Dienatmoeba fragilis, malarial Plasmodium, Leishmania, Trypanosoma African sleeping sickness, Toxoplasma gondii, Pneumocystis carinii, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Millions of years later, flatworms, flukes, and tapeworms became a new generation of carnivores. Hunters are mobile animals that attack, kill, and consume individual prey items one at a time. Because the current flukes and tapeworms are exclusively feeders on animal tissues, whether as predators, scavengers, or parasites, they can be considered the first advanced hunters. They prey on organisms ranging in size from bacteria to small animals (Zoology, Eighth Edition). The parasitologists like to think of parasitology as the Queen of Biology: one part science and one part mythology. The parasites are closely linked between the mysteries of the origin of life to the current evolution of life. The parasites are at the top of the food chain over animal kingdoms including humans. Parasites are evolving and adapting fast to new hostile toxic environments. One of the reasons I was attending this conference was to better understand the metabolism of parasites, especially protozoa, which, billions of years ago, were able to switch from anaerobic (without

oxygen) metabolism to aerobic (oxygen) glycolysis fermentation metabolism. When normal cells degenerate to cancer cells, under various conditions, cancer cells evolve and have similar metabolisms to protozoa. Cancer cells can switch to aerobic glycolysis fermentation metabolism (the Warburg Effects). Understanding how to switch aerobic/anaerobic metabolism and blocking a parasite’s metabolism might provide crucial information about how to block cancer cells’ metabolism to destroy them. I’ve written many articles describing clinical observations with spontaneous disappearance of tumor masses while I was treating my patients for suspected parasite problems with prescribed parasite medications. (I recommend you read my short article, Ivermectin Deficiency Syndrome). I described the phenomenon as an “Accidental Cure” but it may not be an accident at all. Is it possible that there is such a strong correlation between cancer metabolism and parasite metabolism that, while treating parasites, it also blocks cancer metabolism? Is it possible that cancer is triggered by infections from parasites? Dr. Otto Warburg stated 70 years ago that there is only one cause of cancer: mitochondrial dysfunction with glycolysis (glucose) fermentation. For him, cancer is a metabolic disease. I have addressed that in my previous article, Cancer is a Metabolic Disease as if Cancer is Metabolic Parasites, based on Dr.Thomas Seyfried’s book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer. Thirty years ago, the medical profession thought that “stress” caused bleeding peptic ulcers. The standard medical care was bland diet, stress control, antiacids, and valium-like meds to calm the nerves. Dr. Barry Marshall from Australia proved that the cause of peptic ulcers was an infection caused by H.Pylori and not stress. He proved this by swallowing a cup full of H. Pylori and developed an acute ulcer within 10 days. For his discovery, he won a Nobel Prize in 2005. Peptic ulcers are now curable by antibiotics. Before his discovery of H. Pylori as the cause of peptic ulcers, 20,000 people died every year from misunderstanding the cause of ulcers. It is time to think differently about cancer. Think of cancer as a primarily metabolic disease triggered by aging, infections from parasites, virus, bacteria, fungus, hypoxia, inflammation, radiation, carcinogens, toxic emotions, and inherited genetic mutations. Cancer cells regress back to their original primordial anaerobic/aerobic glycolysis fermentative metabolism as a protective, survival mode like protozoa did 1.5 billion years ago. Think of cancer as metabolic parasites. Now, we can use specific parasite medications as a part of cancer therapy as cancer metabolic blockers. It is like using antibiotics to eradicate H. Pylori to treat peptic ulcers. My next article will be on a new generation of cancer metabolic blockers based on parasite medications developed by an unknown medical scientist. Dr. Simon Yu, M.D. is a Board Certified Internist. He practices Internal Medicine with an emphasis on Alternative Medicine to use the best each has to offer. M

any people say tacos are one of their favorite meals. In fact, we’ve devoted an entire weekday to the delicious dish—Taco Tuesday, anyone? Oftentimes, tacos can be loaded with a lot of fat and sodium, but they don’t have to be. There are several ways you and your family can enjoy traditional tacos while ensuring they’re prepared in a healthy way. Here are some tips: • Cut the fat significantly by using lean ground turkey instead of ground beef. • Stretch the meat and add beneficial nutrients like iron, fiber, and protein by adding in a can of pinto beans or black beans to the meat mixture. • Use reduced-fat cheddar cheese instead of the fullfat kind. At the store, look for packages labeled “light”, “reduced-fat” or “made with 2% milk”. • Add in grated vegetables—this will boost the nutrition while also helping you use up produce. • Be sure to pick whole-wheat or corn tortillas—they contain more beneficial nutrients than tortillas made from white flour. Honey: What Makes Local So Sweet? By Jane I. Sueme Isabee’s Beekeeping Supplies Nectar of the Gods, Sweetness and Light, Liquid Gold – call it what you like, local honey is here!

W

hen it comes to honey, what is local? For purposes of supporting the local food community, local can mean your neighborhood, town, regional or even national if it’s harvested and packaged within that area. Honey that is harvested in small batches, lightly filtered without pasteurization is local. Honey harvested by season, bee yard or hive and segregated by nectar source is both local and varietal. If you are looking for the beneficial health properties of honey, local is generally within a 25-mile range. Plant pollens from trees and native plants that contribute to seasonal allergies will be common within that given area. By comparison, honey found on the typical American grocery shelf is packed by just a few national companies with honey imported from any number of foreign suppliers. As much as 80% of the commercial honey sold in the U.S. comes from China, India, Mexico, Argentina and Canada. Blended honey from multiple suppliers, packaged on a large scale results in a consistently colored and consistently tasting honey you find at the chain stores. Some of which is, as you may have read in the news, already modified or extended with other sweeteners before it reaches the United States. Local is 100% Pure. Local beekeepers may lightly strain their honey to remove beeswax and other impurities, but do not apply heat high enough to kill

bacteria or damage any of the micronutrients. Raw honey can range from lightly-filtered to a product of crushed honeycomb, forced through a course strainer, usually resulting in an opaque, waxy honey. Look for seasonal differences in local honey, as indicated by color – spring honey is usually light, summer is amber, and fall nectar sources produce a darker honey. If the nectar sources are exclusively one plant within the honeybee forage range, than it is considered single source honey and can be identified by its source. Some common single source honeys in the U.S. are clover, basswood, tupelo, buckwheat and fireweed. As beekeepers and farmers work together to provide additional bee forage, we may see more singles source honey from our area…maybe lavender? Where is the best place to find local honey? Support your local beekeepers by purchasing from local retailers, farmers markets, even seasonal craft and food events. If you are lucky enough to have a beekeeper in your neighborhood, you may be able to purchase from them directly. How fun would it be to meet the bees (or at least their keeper) that made your honey! Is crystallized honey spoiled? All honey will crystallize over time. Crystallization is not fully understood or controlled - without applying heat, but we know it is not spoiled, merely converted from a liquid state to a solid. If your bottled honey crystallizes, you can reliquefy by warming it – either in a warm water bath, a sunny window, or even a hot car for a day. Enjoy! What Is 5-HTP and are Antacids Unsafe?

Q: What exactly is 5-HTP and how does it compare to tryptophan? A: 5-HTP is the amino acid 5-hydroxytryptophan. It is the step between tryptophan and the brain chemical called serotonin. 5-HTP is better used because tryptophan must be converted to 5HTP before it can be metabolized to serotonin. The conversion is made more difficult if someone has high cortisol levels due to stress; insulin resistance or lack of certain vitamins such as B6 and magnesium. 5-HTP easily crosses the blood brain barrier thereby increasing serotonin levels. It can also increase endorphines and other neurotransmitters in the brain. 5-HTP is used to help with the following: depression, obesity, carbohydrate craving and insomnia. This is a great natural way to help treat mild depression. Q: I have been taking antacids for years. My friend thinks that is unhealthy? Your thoughts? A: It seems more and more people are complaining about heartburn these days. I'm afraid this is one of the areas where there are many disagreements on how to treat the problem. Holistic healers believe the cause of heartburn is not excess stomach acid, but not enough stomach acid. At around age 40, we don't produce hydrochloric acid (HCI) like we used to and need to add some in order to digest our food. If we

don't have enough acid in our stomach, our food just sits there and ferments, causing bloating, gas and yes, heartburn. We have to be able to break down the proteins in our stomachs and can do this by simply taking enzymes containing HCI and pepsin before we eat. HCI is a very essential antibiotic. What if we had no stomach acid production and ate a salad. We would not be able to destroy any bacteria from the raw vegetables. If we take an antacid we are rendering it ineffective to do its job. When used continually, you block the natural production of stomach acid or basically shut off all stomach acid. This can cause bacteria and yeast to enter the stomach. Talk with your health care professional about which type of enzyme would be appropriate for you. This herb information is for health education purposes only. ³,WœV Not Just Calories That Make Bellies )DW ´ Dr. Raj Banerjee, DC

Dr %DQHUMHHœV Wellness Centre 314-282-3990 GetLeanToday.com Dear Seeker of Health & Fitness, Have you had any of these in your life? Injury, pain, surgery, infection, illness, divorce, financial stress, job stress, poison ivy, giving birth, irritable people, starvation diets, the menstrual cycle, eating junk foods, drugs and medication, excessive cold or heat, staring into computer monitors, and babysitting 15 small children under the age of five for over 13 hours²these are all examples of physical, mental and emotional stress. Your walnut-sized adrenal glands, which sit on top of your kidneys, cannot distinguish among the various stresses that are present in your life²whether they are physical, mental, or emotional. These glands just pump out hormones to counteract stress²any stress! They are ³ILJKW or IOLJKW´ hormones intended to serve us for short periods only. But WRGD\œV stresses are anything but short term so the hormones just keep flowing! If this persists, you can become an ³DGUHQDO W\SH´ of person²one who has either overactive or exhausted adrenals. This is very serious business because your quality of life depends so greatly upon how well your adrenal glands work. Visible symptoms come along with persistent adrenal imbalances. Chief among them is hanging fat in the midsection that sags downward over the belly. Thinned-out arms, legs and buttocks generally accompany this fat because the key hormone that prevails during stress (cortisol) converts these muscles

to sugar in an attempt to create more energy for a continually stressed body. With thinned muscles and large abdomen, adrenal types often have a hard time finding clothes that fit. Moreover, stress hormones in excess will steal protein from the bones, leading to osteoporosis. Sometimes a fat pad develops in the lower neck and upper back called a ³EXIIDOR KXPS ´ Further, fat accumulation in the face gives a round or ³PRRQ IDFH´ appearance, a face that may redden because of weakened blood vessels. So why does the extra fat appear? With all this sugar poring into the bloodstream through the action of stressfighting hormones, the fat-burning hormones of the liver get turned off. Not even high-protein or low-calorie diets will turn them back on again! Then fat accumulates on the belly because of the excess sugar thrown into the blood to meet ³GDQJHUV´ that GRQœW exist (and insulin stores the sugar as fat to keep your blood sugar levels normal). In other words, stress hormones prevent fat burning, and counting calories or eating more protein simply will n ot help. To make matters worse, some adrenal types will try to work off fat with heavy exercise. But this just creates more stress and more stress hormones. Result? Less muscle and even more fat! What a predicament. Fortunately, adrenal imbalances can be corrected to turn muscle-burning adrenal types into fat burners again. But WKDWœV only part of the adrenal story. Exhausted adrenals can run out of anti-inflammatory hormones and enter a chronic stage where pain and inflammation stay in the body for years (e.g., fibromyalgia). Sore muscles GRQœW seem to recover after exercise. Pain triggers stress hormones, which turns off fat burning. A deep, restful sleep becomes impossible. Constant fatigue, mid-

afternoon drowsiness, and brain fog or dullness prevail. Caffeine beverages become a constant sidekick, doing yet more damage to the already exhausted adrenals! If you think you might be an ³DGUHQDO W\SH ´ WKHUHœV a whole lot more I can tell you about it (and how to get healthy again) at my one-hour ³EHOO\ IDW´ talk, Saturday morning, at my Wellness Centre in Clayton just off 170 and Ladue. Thinking Of Spring In September by Linda Wiggen Kraft

F

all gardens are growing full force now, which is the perfect time to dream and plan for next year’s spring and summer gardens. Spring blossoms bring a sense of renewal after winter’s cold. Now is the time to plan for them. There are spring bulbs to be planted soon along with perennials, shrubs and trees. In fact September is the perfect time for planting and dividing plants. Soil is warm to help the roots become established before the cold. Soon after, it will be too late for many plants to get in the ground and established before winter sets in. Now is the time to dream of next year’s gardens. What plants would you love to have in your garden, and what plants would love to be in your garden? A great meditation is to sit quietly in or near the garden, asking for guidance as to what plants would help bring the most life into the garden and sustain it. Think of native plants that are the lifesavers of many birds and insects of our ecosystem. Our precious monarch butterflies need

our help by planting more asclepias - butterfly weed - plants. They won’t live on if there aren’t enough of these specific plants growing in gardens and in the wild. Think of plants that feed heart, soul and bodies. Edibles are as beautiful as those plants that we only grow for show. Swiss chard brightens any garden with its rainbow colored stems. Think of the life force that sustains our world and how your garden is part of that. That life force begins with love. How will you open your heart to connect with all the life in your garden and increase the life force in your garden and beyond? Make a list of desired plants. Find help in creating the list through your meditation, records you have kept, plant catalogs in print or online. Ask the experts at locally owned garden centers what plants they recommend for our region. Visit local public gardens to see what grows well here. After discovering what plants will enhance your garden, take a garden inventory of your garden with photos and notes for a garden journal. Creating a garden journal can be as simple as scribbled notes and a few photos, digital records,

an elaborate illustrated notebook, or anything in between. The most important thing is to find what works for you, and to do it. A record with photos shows exactly what is growing and where. A good habit is to keep a garden journal during the entire growing season. These records, whether started earlier in the year or now, will show where changes can be made. Overgrown perennials that need thinning out, thin areas that need more plants, areas that need a redo and areas that need a new garden will be apparent through photos and notes. With the list of desired plants and changes, and an inventory of what is actually in the garden, combine the two. Most likely there will be more plants on the dream list than room for or ability to plant them all. Perhaps some of those plants can be planted next year, but at least some plants will get in the ground soon, in time for spring blossoms and a new year of gardening.

Where to Find Plants for September Planting • Shaw Nature Reserve has its fall native plant sale on Friday September 5th, from 4 pm to 7:30 pm in Gray Summit, MO. Many vendors of native plants will be there. • Local independently owned garden centers have plants and spring bulbs for fall planting. • Check for local spring bulb sale fund-raisers. Stories & Resources For Young People & Their Families

Raising Resilient, Confident and Aware Children by Dr. Vera Gabliani Clinical Psychologist

T

he majority of parents I encounter worry about their child’s self esteem and ability to cope with the stresses of life. Well-intentioned parents believe they need to protect their child from making mistakes and experiencing failures or disappointments in order to build their self esteem. So, when a difficult situation arises, they will typically problem solve for their child, overly reassure their child, or praise their child while trying to talk only about the positive. Interesting research by Dr. Marty Seligman, a psychologist, suggests that children need to experience failures and difficult life experiences, in order to become resilient. The key is in the handling of these mistakes, inevitable disappointments, and painful life experiences. A developmental task your child faces in these situations is learning to evaluate herself realistically, to persevere, and to move through these challenges while maintaining and further developing a sense of her own power and self worth. Our task as adults is to empathize with the discomfort associated with this learning

process while teaching how to manage these painful emotions and thoughts constructively. One way to teach this is by having conversations about the situation and replaying what else was possible to choose to do or just as importantly to not do. You are building the skill of self-awareness and self control by highlighting the power of choice to respond versus react. By having these conversations, we empower our child to be aware of and work through their thoughts and feelings when facing challenging situations. It is also important for parents to guide their child in letting go of and accepting what she cannot change in this moment, and to tolerate her discomfort while she is working through this task. Countryside Montessori School

ountryside Montessori School is dedicated to the education of the whole child. Our goal is to meet each individual child’s need for intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. Our learning environment is designed to cultivate independence, individual responsibility, freedom of choice, concentration, problem-solving abilities, social interaction, competency in basic skills and a love of learning. By offering a superb Montessori education in a nurturing environment, Countryside strives to help children reach their full potential and become independent, life long learners. The Montessori method of education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman physician. Early in the 20th century, Dr. Montessori developed her educational concepts and tested them at a center in Rome. Dr. Montessori cherished the uniqueness of each child and discovered that children learn best within environments that support individual development. She found that when children are in a home-like setting filled with developmentally appropriate materials, they become independent self-motivated learners. The Primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential. The “whole child” approach taken by Dr. Maria Montessori fosters growth in all areas because the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive needs of a child are seen as inseparable. This approach encourages joy of learning and development of self-esteem. Current Preschool Openings. 12226 Ladue Road, (314) 434-2821 Creve Coeur, MO 63141 • www.montessori4children.com

The HP Axis and its Involvement with Hormonal Difficulties Building A New Civilization

Unlocking the Hormonal Mystery By Dr. Mark Schopp, D.C.

T

The old order of competition and separation is crumbling. The environmental crisis is forcing us to redefine our needs, and enter into a new and truer understanding of the meaning and purpose of our lives. What if the Elder Brothers of humanity, lead by Maitreya the World Teacher, offered Their wisdom to assist us in creating a sustainable future?

Investigate for yourself. www.share-International.org

he HP Axis is a major part of the neuroendocrine system that controls reactions to stress and regulates many body processes, including digestion the immune system, mood and emotions, sexuality, and energy storage and expenditure. In the treatment of any hormonal problem the Doctor must evaluate whether or not the HP axis is functioning properly and if it is effecting any other aspect of the endocrine system. The HP Axis is composed of both the Hypothalamus and Pituitary. The hypothalamus secretes releasing hormones to the Pituitary gland. In turn the Pituitary secretes what are known as stop and go hormones to the Thyroid, Adrenal, Gonads, and Mammary glands. In addition this relationship between the glands includes a feedback mechanism. This allows each gland to deliver to the Hypothalamus and Pituitary information telling them to either increase or decrease the amount of hormone that it is releasing to keep the system at the proper levels. Patients with a hormonal problem can experience a host of symptoms. Fatigue, Inflammation, digestive problems, reduced libido, blood pressure problems, hot flashes, depression, insomnia, hair loss, reduced mental clarity, mood changes, night sweats, irregular cycles, weight gain and many more. One can have only one of these symptoms or many. The problem is with treating the symptoms only. The goal of nutritional therapy is to utilize whole food products and herbs to give the body what it needs to heal itself not simply treat a symptom. Stress can be a main contributor to disrupting the hormone system. In addition this system can also be compromised by products such as lotions, skin care products, cleaning products, fragrance products and

pesticides. It is important with skin care products to make sure you use products not containing estrogen. Unfortunately this information is normally not available on the label of the product. In all cases I want patients on skin care that does not have estrogen in them as this can cause havoc to the endocrine system. The problems we see today are that patients tend to treat themselves and head the wrong direction. This is mainly on the advice of wellmeaning friends and family, discussion groups, what helped others (every person is different), and of course Facebook advice. The largest problem that I see is that they treat only the gland and not the HP axis where it all starts. The entire endocrine system works together and always has to be treated as a whole. Also affecting this system can be the Liver and digestive system. Another example that we must treat the body as a whole, not just a symptom. Treatment of the delicate hormonal system should never be done without consideration of the all the systems of the body. What worked for one will not work for another in many cases. Treatment to just alleviate symptoms without correcting the problem will lead to additional problems down the road. If you have a health problem please call the office. Together we can work together so that you can reach your health goals. Dr. Schopp is a Chiropractic Physician who specializes in Nutritional Therapy as well as Chiropractic and Acupuncture. He started practice in 1986. His book Pulling Yourself Out of the Pits of Life, includes the time that he was chronically ill and regained his health with Nutritional Therapy. This enabled him to go from barely being able to walk around the block to becoming an Ironman Triathlete in September of 2002. HealtHy pets

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. — Gandhi

Back To School Pet Basics! by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, DVM

S

tudents are racing back to school during August and September each year. Whether you are heading to junior or senior high school; or, onward to college, there are considerations regarding pet management, and more. First of all, note that many times, changes in our home schedules may directly impact our pets. Your time commitments as a family addressing school schedules will influence how you manage your pets at home. It may mean they spend more time in a crate or holding area, and that you have less absolute time to play and interact. Schedule changes might mean less exercise and more weight gain for Fido. Pets get bored and may even become notably distressed with household activity changes. This is particularly noted in cats who do not accept change very easily at all. These issues need to be recognized and hopefully, family members will recognize and address special new needs. A solution is best addressed in your own reorganization of time and commitment to your pets’ emotional and husbandry needs. Be sure to compensate for an absolute loss in pet contact time with improved quality of time together, either walking, playing or just hanging around together. Be alert to possible changes in your pets’ behaviors. If you see alterations in their potty behaviors or with dinner patterns, make a note and respond to them. Don’t be shy about discussing your concerns with your veterinarian. He/she may offer referral to an animal behavioralist in more dramatic cases. Too often your veterinarian hears stories of animals once house trained, suddenly reacting adversely to house schedule changes and suddenly, potty accidents materialize. If you are a student on your journey to college, and completely away from home and from your beloved pet, you might consider taking special last days home in spoiling your pet with love and attention. The loss of contact with our pets is not only a burden to the pet, but certainly, impacts the pet owner as well. I have heard of folks who attempt to skype to their pets while away at college, as well. Students leaving for school often ask about best and most appropriate pets for college. Assuming you explore the rules of your dormitory or apartment, there are many wonderful pet scenarios for college settings. Again, time commitment at school often compromises what you can offer to a pet relationship. Dogs and cats may not prove as best pet choices, unless you are in an appropriate housing space where roommates may help with husbandry care obligations as well as offering time and attention for your pets, to be shared. Other pet options that may serve well, even in dormitory settings, and if allowed by their house rules, can include reptiles, birds, fishes or laboratory pets. These pets generally fit Does Your Pet Suffer From Allergies, Dry Skin, Itchiness and Doggie Odor?

into small housing units. They generally take much less time on your part as a pet owner, as they do not typically require the same level of ‘hands on’ time. Overall, their husbandry needs, that include caging, bedding, feeding, play objects and even healthcare, may greatly reduce the financial burden to you as a student pet owner. People are often surprised with the degree of engagement one can achieve with these sorts of pet categories. Even an active, creatively designed fish tank can prove a very exciting and engaging pet experience! Again, the options are many, and it is up to the student to fit a best case scenario to your special life needs. In summary, I encourage all pet owners, as families or individuals, to consider the influence of time and schedule changes associated with the onset of the school season, on you and your pet. Those changes can impose both physical and behavioral influences to both sides of the coin. Work out do-able schedules that work for you and your pets. And, be sure to enjoy your school season! Nature Wisdom with Pat Tuholske Naturalist

The Wisdom of Stillness

A

s daylight grows shorter, squirrels bury nuts, geese wing south, ladybugs swarm, and auburn leaves descend. The shift of the season is upon us. Amid the scurry of activity I seek stillness and solitude like the lone acorn gracing the Ozark forest floor. Embracing serenity and simple things, I have truly become the crone in her woodland cottage spending the day with her plants and animals. My new quieter self has brought a kind of wisdom that is lost in this modern busy world. I am un-doing my formerly hectic life. Stillness has become part of my story, my healing, my way of life. I move through the day embraced by the elements and guided by creative aspirations. I seek the quiet contemplation of gathering goldenrod, wild grasses and pinecones. I savor the tranquil single-mindedness of weaving a wreath. My actions are concise and effective and inspired. I would still be highly active if not for the gift of West Nile Virus. It teaches me the wisdom in stillness. I have minimized, slowed down, become efficient in my activities and commitments. I am conscious of the true power behind each choice I make. No more multi-

tasking or juggling all my skills. Any stress or overexertion has significant impact on my injured brain. My sanctuary is void of commotion or agitation. As my brain strives to heal, stillness is now my path. I avoid over-stimulation of city sounds and sights, steer clear of chaos, and keep things uncomplicated and minimal. My brain needs peace and quiet, and nothing but. I have found a deeper fellowship in the rocks, the trees, the waters, the stars. All of nature supports me in my quest for tranquil healing. I feel it in the blessing of sunrise, the rippling wave, and the glory of the woodlands. Staying connected to my nature self, I now live from the inside out. As I tap into the deep well of inner-wisdom, my life becomes a moving meditation. The essence of autumn is the power that comes from knowing yourself. Within its quiet moments I seek the wisdom within stillness. In stillness I acknowledge strengths and weaknesses, growth and experiences. In stillness I have found peace. Not in manic clutter or over achieving or frantic doing..... I am still. I am a human simply being. See Pat’s Wild Wreaths and Prayer Wheels crafted from Ozark native plants at willowrainherbalgoods.com. Check out her “Nature Chronicles for musings on the Human-Nature relationship. Earthworms’ Castings

aaawwwKKK! He glared up at me, jerking and squawking through his (BIG, SHARP) golden beak. I felt his heat, his sturdy weight, clasped under my thundering heart.

with Jean Ponzi

happy Bird Day

W

My friend Rita, a physical therapist, touched my shoulder and said in my ear, “Relax, Jean” and I realized I was totally hunched up over him. Trina was talking to a gathering crowd, telling our friends and many other folks about this individual bird and about Red-Shouldered Hawks in general. She was calmly answering questions, teaching as she so naturally and eloquently does, and all the while keeping one of her gloved hands near her hawk-and-woman mobile unit.

hen I turned 60 this summer I got to experience one of my life’s Uplifting Moments.

Missouri Botanical Garden (one of my favorite places on Earth) hosted the party, featuring a stellar show by one of my favorite bands (amazing musicians and my dear friends), the Augusta Bottoms Consort. On that Whitaker Festival concert night (as a bonus for all) the ABC got to wow about 6,000 new fans. And, as I got to quip many times, I did not have to clean the house, cook or cut the grass to have a mighty fine celebration.

I walked a long way with that hawk, out of the sheltering Whitaker stage and up, up, up the nearest hill, past big trees and a building and some tall yard-art whirly-gigs to a spot where the bird could take his clearest trajectory. I felt like that magical walk took an hour – and my wild, agitated passenger surely did too.

My friend Trina Witener brought a surprise. She stealthily worked out details with my husband Dale, and with Garden security. Trina is a phenomenal naturalist and educator on the staff of World Bird Sanctuary, itself an environmental and cultural gem.

“This is good,” Trina said, “he’s not gonna want to hang around people.” My dear friend Laura led off this bird’s blessing sing: “Happy Bird Day to Youuuu,” an anthem for us both.

She arrived with a juvenile red-shouldered hawk, brought in to World Bird as an orphan and rehabbed and raised there to the point where he was able to live on his own. Trina’s incredible birthday gift was bringing this raptor for me to release.

Then it was one-two-THREE! Out of my leather grip he came, flapping a bit for balance, then soaring: up and OVER the trees, around in a huge arc over the Climatron, onward past the heads of us all, off above the neighborhood, and out of sight in the summer sunset. Everybody cheered and I was laughing and crying and hollering too.

I had participated in no fewer than three of these wild bird releases, thanks to Trina, including collusion with herself for Dale to release a young screech owl, when ABC played out at World Bird on his 60th. I had started the tradition, in our circle of friends, of singing a blessing to the bird before its moment of flying free. Each of these times was wonderful - and then there was my Bird Day. Early in the evening, when the concert crowd was still arriving, Trina brought the hawk out of his carrier. She showed me how to hold him in the cast position, bird facing forward, snug to my chest, firmly gripping his (LONG, SHARP) talons in the extralong, extra-heavy leather gloves we both wore. She reminded me, as I had watched releasing friends do those other times,

314-849-3123

Later than night, my friend Robert Bawell sent an email gift, a memento of the instant when a 60-year-old human and a wild young bird took flight – together. And isn’t it swell that those leather gloves were royal blue, and matched my outfit! how to crouch down, count to three and then throw the bird up into the air, to give him the most confident send-off. Then she passed the hawk to me.

Our approach to holistic health includes the entire body and the oral cavity is no exception. We are dedicated to serving our patients and promoting a level of health care that carefully evaluates and reviews the use of dental materials, dental procedures and also offers dietary and nutritional support for each and every individual that is seen in our office.

Did you know that examining the mouth can reveal the presence of illnesses or unstable conditions in other areas of the body? If you feel like you’ve just about exhausted all your options in your search for better health, have your mouth examined with a different approach in mind. Get motivated, get educated, and get ready to participate in a

health-oriented lifestyle that will provide dental alternatives and a nutritional foundation designed to help support your own body’s healing powers.

The focus of holistic dentistry is to consider the mouth as a part of the whole body. We use materials and methods that are more compatible biologically with the body instead of the traditional dental materials. Examples of non-compatible materials are mercury fillings, non-precious heavy metal crowns, bridges and partials or dentures. Alternatives to fluoride are used

for the prevention of cavities. Proper alignment of the jaws and teeth are the foundation of how the body perceives itself in space. The result of improper alignment can result in symptoms of headache, ears ringing, loss of hearing, pain in the head and neck and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Good nutrition is inseparable for good

health. If your diet consists of food and drink made with white flour, sugar and no fresh fruits and vegetables, your body is likely to be acidic with resultant more medical and dental problems. For your dental evaluation contact our office for an appointment by calling 636-4589090 or email at cherryhillsdds@yahoo.com.

Three—no, FOUR Cheers for the ARTS in St. Louis!

ARTful Living St. Louis Area Fine Arts, Crafts & Performing Arts Michelle “Mike” Ochonicky, Arts Editor

etween connecting flights on a few trips, I’ve had some time to spend in Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, in The Netherlands. Most travelers consider time spent in an airport as b-o-r-i-n-g. Not so at Schiphol. In fact, artlovers may feel cheated if they don’t have layover-time in that airport. The Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam has a mini-satellite facility right there in the terminal, with a changing exhibition of works from the museum’s collection, plus a top-notch museum shop. Definitely a delightful place to spend time! Airports offer an ideal venue to give passers-through a taste of a city’s arts culture. At Lambert St. Louis International Airport, through November 30, the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum (which is located in Grand Center) hosts “A Heritage of Cameras.” The exhibition of vintage cameras is located at the Meeting Place, at the exit of Concourse C inside Terminal 1. Six vitrines present an incredible range of cameras from IPHF’s vast collection. According to IPHF’s Executive Director John Nagel, “Photographs surround our daily lives by the thousands. We are literally bombarded with images throughout our lives. Photographs are taken for granted as tools of communication, and no words are required. Photography touches everyone, from all walks of life….But no matter the image, all photographs derive from a camera…The camera is the essential tool of photography.”

Vintage Box Cameras from IPHF on display in Lambert St. Louis Airport. Nagel notes, “Because Lambert St. Louis International Airport hosts 12 million travelers each year, this special exhibition opportunity is an important way that the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum can extend our reach outside of our Museum’s facility. A Heritage of Cameras...will allow St. Louisans and travelers from around the world the opportunity to learn more about the importance of photography in their daily lives.” Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design continues its

50th anniversary celebration with the recent announcement of expanding education and community programs. Generous sponsorship from the Kranzberg Arts Foundation is providing the opportunity for Craft Alliance to create new programming at its Education Center (in Grand Center) to make the studios more accessible through Sunday Crafternoons, Free Family Days and other collaborative endeavors to utilize Craft Alliance’s extensive studios. The Artist-inResidence program continues to engage the public in close communication with working artists.

Senior Director of Education Luanne Rimel said, “We are especially excited about Sunday Crafternoons…where we host low-cost art making events that allow people to try out a new skill in our studios and complete a project in just a few hours.” Also beginning in September, the gallery in the Kranzberg Arts Center will become an arts incubator, operated by the Kranzberg Arts Foundation, while Craft Alliance will present all of its exhibitions in the Delmar Loop location’s gallery. Said Craft Alliance’s Executive

29 Director Boo McLoughlin, “Directing our focus in the Kranzberg Arts Center on our education programs will strengthen our capacity to education a diverse urban audience in craft techniques. Craft Alliance is committed to bringing the St. Louis community exceptional opportunities to view and create contemporary craft.” Find out more at www.craftalliance.org. Applause for Third Degree Glass Factory and the St. Louis Lampworker’s Society: On September 20, the $2 admission fee to the Glass Galore show/sale benefits Our Little Haven, which provides residential care for abused, neglected, drug exposed and special needs children from birth through age five. Several years ago, I painted some fanciful, castle-themed murals in Our Little Haven. While I was working, one of the very young residents peeked in to watch me. “That horse has wings!” he observed. “Yes,” I replied. “It’s a Pegasus. Can you say that word?” We practiced saying it a few times. Just then, another little guy walked in and said, “Hey, that horse has wings!” The first boy explained, “That’s a Pegasus.” And then he proudly added, “Everybody knows that.” I couldn’t help but smile! So help Our Little Haven, and find some great glass, too, from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at 5200 Delmar. More details at www.stlglass.com or 314-367-4527. At the end of the month, Greater St. Louis Hispanic Festival relocates to the Soulard Market Park, located near the corner of Lafayette Street and South 9th in Soulard. This celebration of culture opens on Friday, September 26 (10 a.m.-10 p.m.) and continues through Sunday, September 28 (closes at 9 p.m.). Enjoy some great authentic food, music, dancing, and check out the arts. Learn more at www.hispanicfestivalstl.com/. See Artful Happenings at Thehealthyplanet.com.

Donate Used Medical Equipment, Oct. 11 at Select Walgreens Stores

St. Louis HELP’s primary mission is to provide any individual in need with access to free Home Medical Equipment (HME) through our recycle and reuse program. Our secondary mission is to divert unnecessary waste from area landfills by providing a local resource for the reuse or recycling of unwanted HME. In addition to collecting and distributing throughout the year St. Louis HELP will conduct a metro-wide Equipment Drive on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at twelve designated Walgreens sites. Annually, St. Louis HELP is serving over 5,000 persons and provides a local resource and advocate for waste reduction and recycling by diverting tons of unwanted medical equipment waste from area landfills. Home Medical Equipment devices include, but are not limited to, manual and power wheelchairs, scooters, canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, tub transfer benches, grab bars, elevated toilet seats, portable commodes, wheelchair ramps, seating cushions, back supports/positioning devices, dressing aids, electric hospital beds, van lifts, lift chairs and stair lifts. Each year St. Louis HELP diverts over 115.6 tons of waste from landfills and distributes over $2.1 Million in medical equipment ($1.26 Million to program beneficiaries and $892,000 to partner organizations). Our program continues to be a solution to a problem faced by individuals and their caregivers in the metropolitan St. Louis area. The uninsured, underinsured, disabled, elderly and their caregivers are particularly at risk of facing barriers to accessing Home Medical Equipment. These vulnerable populations typically experience reduced access to health care services, demonstrating a continuing need for a strong, viable safety net. One of the greatest gaps in services with the recent cuts in Medicare and Medicaid funding and the dramatically increasing cost of private health insurance is accessing HME. St. Louis HELP is a non-profit organization – all donations are tax deductible. For more information please call 314-567-4700 or visit www.stlhelp.org.
