DEAR READER,

Moving on to the day-to-day issues of the business, safety in the workplace is a constant priority and in this edition our continuing series on safety focuses on the precautions that need to be taken if vehicles or mobile equipment have to be reversed.

This year brings with it a genuine sense of optimism that the fragile recovery we’ve witnessed will consolidate and strengthen across the country as employment rises and consumer confidence builds. Certainly, the signs are positive from The Hardware Show 2015 which is set to be the biggest hardware industry event in Ireland to date. For more on the show, turn to the catalogue in this edition where you will find all you need to know about the hardware event of the year.

FLEETWOOD – THE GREENEST PAINT JUST GOT GREENER

PERFECT PALETTE

Fleetwood Paints Colour Laboratory, working closely with the company’s colourant suppliers, has developed a high performance line of Zero Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) colourants. These new colourants perform to the same exacting standards as conventional colourants, but with no added VOC solvents, according to Fleetwood. Low-odour, Zero VOC Paints are manufactured without any added VOC solvents. When these paints are tinted, however, using conventional colourants to make custom colours, some amount of VOC is added. Although on average the amount is small, in certain deep-tone colours the amount is enough to give a Zero VOC paint the VOC content of conventional paints. Fleetwood states that with its new environmentally superior Zero VOC colourants, its Zero VOC paint will remain Zero VOC even when tinted to the deepest colours. When used to tint VOC containing waterborne paints, the Zero VOC colourants will ensure that paint odour remains minimal. Also, unlike colourants used by some other paint companies, Fleetwood claims its Zero VOC colourants are free of any chemicals of concern. The VOC content of paint is regulated to minimise potential impacts on outdoor air quality. VOC emissions may also be an indoor air quality concern, as most VOCs have an odour, and some VOC may have health effects. For regulatory purposes, the VOC content of paint is calculated “excluding any colourant added to tine bases” at the point of sale. Fleetwood Zero VOC Colourants are now available in all Fleetwood Colour Mixing Stockists.

FLEETWOOD TO THE RESCUE

At the request of Francis Brennan, Fleetwood helped Enable Ireland refurbish its facilities in Sandymount in Dublin.

Fleetwood were approached by Francis and John Brennan to come to the rescue of Enable Ireland, a charity which works with children and adults with physical disabilities. The charity has an adult centre, garden centre and craft shop in Sandymount which was badly in need of a makeover for the service users. Fleetwood as usual, said ‘Fleetwood would would Fleetwood’ supply the paint free of charge. Fleetwood’s Tom Byrne took over the management of the project and gave advice on quantities and finishes to the painters involved. There was a grand opening of the refurbished Garden Centre in November, attended by the Brennan brothers, directors, staff and clients/ users. Fleetwood got special mention for supplying the paint and for a mural painted on the side of the building.

The newly launched colour range from Crown Colourmix, The Collection, features a selection of 144 colours, each handselected and mixed by the experts at Crown Paints. There is something to suit all needs with this new range, according to Crown and all of the 144 colours have been formulated to give the best choice of finish, and pack size, for the job at hand. Consumers can bring a burst of citrus colour to their home by combining a crisp white with a splash of freshly juiced or draw inspiration from nature by incorporating the earthy tones of Sherbet Lemon or Swiss Coffee, perfect for a room opening onto a garden or balcony. If it’s a sophisticated look they’re after, they can work shades of Niagara Mist and Crocus Bud side by side to create the perfect elegant contrast or, for a bright and fresh feeling, pair shades of Snowbird and Shark White. Crown Colourmix aims to give consumers unlimited choice so their homes can reflect their personalities as well as being practical. The Collection can be seen in-store at select Crown Colourmix stockists, online at www.crownpaints.ie, or virtually with the Crown Paints MyRoomPainter app, free on Apple and Android.

Altaterra says the Dakea range, distributed in Ireland by Irish Wire Products, offers high quality roof windows with more features and an industry-leading product guarantee. The range offers three different categories: • good – the simple but efficient way to improve light, ventilation and insulation, whilst gaining additional underroof living space at the most reasonable cost; • better – a classic centre-pivot roof window with superb energy performance and increased solidity of construction; • best – Dakea Best, with its upper pivot construction provides an improved view, greater flexibility in terms of installation height and a more comfortable sash opening. All Dakea roof windows have an up-to-20-year guarantee that is transferable and which, according to Altaterra, can add to resell value if the homeowner wishes to sell within the next 20 years. Altaterra and Dakea’s Irish distributor, Irish Wire Products (IWP) promise superior service levels and a dedicated Dakea Area Sales Manager has been appointed.

Brooks has achieved Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) chain-of-custody certification. This chain-of-custody certification provides independently-verified assurance that the wood used in the timber or timber-based products sold by Brooks originates from responsibly-managed forests, with the material tracked through every stage of the process from forest to end-user. Brooks also has a range of PEFC certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) timber products sourced from sustainably managed forests. All of this helps the ever-increasing number of customers (including trade and Government agencies) that choose certified timber products to help meet the European Timber Regulation and fulfil Green Building initiatives. Brooks has also been recognised by RIAI CPD for its expertise in timber and timber-based products. Brooks will be hosting seminars for architects and sharing its extensive timber knowledge this year. The first Brooks seminar will take place on Friday, 13th February, 2015.

UCD CELEBRATES ECOCEM FOUNDER’S ACHIEVEMENTS IN GREEN CONSTRUCTION

Professor Andrew J Deeks, President, UCD; Donal O’Riain, Founder, Ecocem Materials; and Professor David Fitzpatrick, Dean of Engineering, UCD.

At a recent gala evening to launch the inaugural UCD Foundation Day Alumni Awards in UCD, Donal O’Riain was recognised for his outstanding contribution to green construction. In total, 450 of UCD’s most distinguished alumni, supporters and staff, attended the gala event in O’Reilly Hall. The black tie ceremony and banquet celebrated the founding of the university and the achievements of 13 of their most distinguished alumni. The Awards recognise UCD alumni that have shown leadership, impact and excellence in their field. In the Engineering Category, Donal O’Riain received his Award in recognition of his “outstanding entrepreneurial achievements in carbon-neutral construction”. Donal founded Ecocem Materials in the year 2000, a company dedicated to the production of low carbon, high-performance cement. The company has gone from strength to strength and now produces over a million tonnes annually across Ireland, the Netherlands and France. To date, Ecocem says its products have reduced CO2 emissions by over two and a half million tonnes. Donal commented: “I’m truly honoured to accept this UCD Alumni Award. It represents not only a great personal milestone, but it is also a recognition by one of the best universities in the world of the work carried out by the Ecocem team in developing low-carbon construction solutions for an increasingly carbonconstrained world. Everyone at Ecocem will see this as an encouragement to continue to innovate and expand in this major new market.”

TEGRAL LAUNCHES ROOFING TRAINING ACADEMY This January sees the launch of the Tegral Academy. The Academy has been created as a centre of excellence to provide better understanding of best practice standards on roofing construction and product knowledge for those who install Tegral products. The training is free to attend and is the first of its kind in Ireland. Initial plans are to train over 600 delegates per year and Tegral’s sales force are currently distributing posters and information leaflets to builders merchants nationwide to advertise and promote the Tegral Academy. So far, Tegral reports, the response has been extremely positive as there appears to be solid demand for the training. The Academy has a well-equipped workshop containing a selection of custom-made roof rigs to enable delegates to experience hands-on practical sessions with the products. The interior of the Academy’s conference room was also customdesigned using Equitone Tectiva, Textura and Pictura, and the conference room table was specially created from Equitone Natura to showcase the versatility of the company’s cladding range. Attendees who complete the course will be added to the Tegral Recommended Roofing Contractor list which is published on the Academy website. Tegral’s Managing Director, Paddy Kelly, believes that the Academy will help to strengthen Tegral’s market share. He added: “We are really excited that the Tegral Academy is now up and running and the feedback we have gotten from our customers so far has been tremendous so we expect it to be hugely successful.” For more information please visit: www.tegralroofingacademy.com

Initial plans are to train over 600 delegates per year at the Tegral Roofing Academy.

ONE IN SIX HOMES BENEFIT FROM PUBLICLY-FUNDED ENERGY UPGRADES One-sixth of Irish homes benefit from Government-funded energy efficiency upgrades, according to Minister for Energy Alex White, who claims that energy efficiency initiatives are cutting heating bills and creating jobs. At the recent announcement of €13.2m funding for the Better Energy Communities Scheme in 2015, Minister White said: “We need individuals, communities and businesses to engage with the energy agenda if we are to build a more sustainable society. That is why public consultation has been a central pillar of the

energy policy paper, which I intend to publish this year. Through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, more than €300m in grants have already been provided to householders under the Better Energy Programme. This has delivered energy efficiency upgrades to more than 275,000 homes – nearly one-sixth of all homes in the country.” He added:“By rolling out energy efficiency technologies through local businesses, community facilities and sports clubs, we are also showing that energy efficiency technologies work.”

STRATEGY

THE WINDS OF CHANGE - YOUR ASSOCIATION AIMS TO DELIVER INCREASED VALUE Based on detailed consultation with members and extensive research, the HAI has developed a focused plan to add real value to member businesses over the next three years. In order for HAI to prepare for the future and effectively represent its members’ needs, it was deemed essential to have an understanding of perceptions of it among both current and recently-lapsed members. It was clear from research and consultation carried out during September/October 2014, both by HAI and a third-party research agency, that HAI needed to shape and adapt to better meet the needs of its members in an industry that has experienced a prolonged period of highly challenging trading conditions followed, most recently, by tentative signs of recovery.

LISTENING TO MEMBERS The listening process undertaken has enabled HAI to produce a short, concise plan, to be implemented over a threeyear period, which sets out a new approach focused on delivering services that will add real value to member businesses. Working with findings from the research, together with input from the 2013/2014 Executive Committee and the new 2015/2016 National Council who met on 14th January, a strategy has been developed which places an emphasis on identifying areas where

HAI can deliver the greatest value to its members. This new strategy reinforces the founding principles of the association by placing hardware and builders merchants at the heart of its membership, as embodied in both the mission statement and the pillars that support it. HAI also has plans this year to review its governance documents, membership fee structure and overall resourcing to ensure that the plans outlined can be delivered on time and on budget. HAI is keen to ensure that these plans are under continuous development and welcome your feedback and in

particular any ideas and suggestions for improvements. HAI is your association and to make it stronger we would encourage all members to actively engage and participate to ensure your needs are being met.

THE PLAN IN OUTLINE In year one of the plan, HAI will concentrate on four key objectives: 1. Policy – we will continue our work on policy development. We have established a firm footing in the last couple of years so that we truly are ‘the voice of the Irish hardware industry’. From meeting with the Minister for Finance through to working with Government agencies such as the Revenue and presenting to committees, we are ensuring that the issues that matter to our members are heard. A key aspect of our work this year will be to campaign to extend the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme beyond 31st December when it’s due to expire. Latest figures show that the value of works through the scheme is €293m. The overwhelming majority of this work is carried out in the Dublin area with Cork next but the rest of the country shows slow adoption. More work needs to be done in informing not only the public about the value of the scheme but raising awareness with

2.

Market intelligence – our retailer/ merchant members will already be aware that we are launching a business index of sales this year. Each merchant will be able to measure their own performance by comparing their own sales turnover (net of VAT) with other merchants in their region and nationally, as well as in other ways, such as urban/rural. We will build on this base to bring our members highly relevant and useful data over the next 12 months so that they can better understand the market they operate in. 4. Networking – we are working on a programme of events that combine classic networking with peers, competitors and industry leaders with an educational value. We are taking a multi-dimensional approach so that face-to-face meeting opportunities will be maximised to make the most of members’ time. Probably the most important aspect of all of these plans is ensuring that we continue to increase our avenues of communication with members and engage potential new members. HAI will do this by using an integrated communications mix that will inform, support and connect with members, potential members, the media, Government and its agencies, and other stakeholders interested in our sector. Communications will focus on driving traffic to the HAI website which will be the hub for member information and support and the ‘shop window’ for prospective members. 3.

STRATEGIC PLAN 2015 – 2017

merchants so they can advise and support their customers. Education – we are determined to provide relevant and cost-effective training material and courses in order to increase standards in the sector, whether it is for new employees at entry level or for potential senior managers. We also want to ensure you are provided with useful business support tools and a catalogue of information in the area of compliance and regulation. Our priority is to make this as flexible and accessible as possible, and we will soon launch an e-learning platform so that members have access at times that suit them.

I

’m delighted to welcome you to The Hardware Show 2015. Interest in the show has exceeded our expectations, with over 3,000 sq. metres of space sold – 50% more than in February 2013 – and more than 140 suppliers exhibiting (of which 60 are new). Given the increased scale of this year’s show, I would encourage you to allow plenty of time to get around. Consider using the handy guide on page 7 to help you get the most out of your visit to the show. New products and innovation ideas are essential to the health of any sector and ours is no different. Indeed, recent years have witnessed hardware and builders merchants broadening their horizons and product offerings by complementing traditional hardware and building materials with new or additional homeware, garden, pet care and other products. This year’s show places an increasing emphasis on these areas, categorising exhibitors under four headings of Home, Garden, Build and DIY and using these to categorise entries for our Innovation Awards. We anticipate an excellent standard of entry in our search for the ‘Best in Category’ and ‘Best in Show’ products/ services, and I encourage you to look out for the shortlisted entries and winners in the front reception area. New for 2015 is the

INSIDE Information Exchange area, a presentation forum where merchants can drop in on presentations on a range of interesting and relevant topics, including the new Building Control Regulations and the impact of online. With experts cherry-picked for their knowledge, timely Q&A sessions will be scheduled after each presentation to enable visitors to get answers to their specific questions. Another new addition to the 2015 show is The Garden Feature hosted by the Kildare Growers Association, whose members specialise in growing and supplying trees, shrubs, heathers, and herbaceous and bedding plants to leading garden centres and retailers throughout Ireland. Qualified horticulturalists will be on hand to answer visitors’ questions and advise on commercial opportunities. Make sure you stop by this area if you’re considering ‘branching out’ this year or have already done so. After a very challenging few years for everyone involved, signs of recovery are emerging. This year’s show comes at an opportune time and will showcase all that is vibrant and dynamic in our sector. Take a day or two out of your business to check out what’s new, assess opportunities, take advantage of exclusive offers, or learn something from one of the expert presenters. It’s sure to be time well spent! Also, whether or not you’re already a member of HAI, take five minutes to visit our stand (right in front of the main entrance). I guarantee you a warm welcome, as well as an opportunity to find out about what is planned in the coming months to ensure the Association is fit for purpose and of real value to all our members. I look forward to seeing you at the show.

PROUD TO SPONSOR THE HARDWARE SHOW 2015

W

e, at Netwatch, are proud to support the Hardware Show 2015, the main showcase for Ireland’s hardware, builders merchants, retail and DIY industry. At Netwatch, we pride ourselves on providing security and peace-of-mind to our customers both in Ireland and across the globe. Putting our name to an event like the Hardware Show, which also has a reputation for excellence and innovation, is a perfect partnership for us. The Show has grown significantly this year and highlights a vast array of companies showcasing their products and services, from large international brands to indigenous Irish companies, many of whom are customers of Netwatch. From family-run businesses to publicly quoted companies, these companies, like Netwatch, serve their local communities and employ significant numbers. With recent figures from the CSO indicating an uplift in sales across building materials, DIY, hardware, homeware and gardening, the Hardware Show 2015 will be about growth, innovation and looking to the future. Indeed, the show itself is 50% bigger than the last time it was organised in 2013. As a provider of bespoke risk management, business continuity and security services to clients across Ireland, Europe and the USA, Netwatch has major insight into the risk and security issues faced by many of the organisations exhibiting at this event. With the increases in thefts of valuable material and break-ins in the hardware industry alone doubling each year, ensuring your business is secure and that risk is managed effectively is becoming more vital than ever. Often, the cost of replacing the stolen items outweighs the cost of the item itself, due to the physical and related damage that is incurred, while the stress and anxiety engendered is an added burden on a business. Netwatch was the first company in Ireland to combine specialist video transmission technologies with satellite communications to reduce the risk of criminal damage to the property of its clients. Today, our communications hub in Carlow monitors in excess of 33,000 security cameras across the globe and our system has prevented more than 40,000 crimes from taking place. We are delighted to support the Hardware Show this year and look forward to meeting you there. David Walsh Group CEO, Netwatch

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR VISIT TO THE SHOW Here’s a few ideas to help you plan your visit. • Look for new products, particularly in areas that your customers, staff or suppliers have highlighted. Look for new point of sale material that will make selling easier. And look for the items that aren’t in all the big stores. This is important to differentiate your product offering. • Network with other retailers. It’s fun and you’ll learn a lot. • Attend the information exchange and new product display areas to be fully informed on what’s happening in our industry. • Attend the Innovation Award presentations to be sure to be up to date with the latest developments and new ideas in the industry. • Be on the lookout for • impulse items for your register area; • new to market items; • end-of-line specials; • new training material; • promotional area specials (bulk).

• Look at the goods on show on a seasonal basis, deciding what you’ll carry and advertise. • In the evening, catch up with friends you may not have seen since the last show. • Seek help and advice from suppliers on everything from marketing and advertising support to staff training assistance. • Visit the HAI stand for a friendly face and to learn about developments with the Association. • Finally, at every show have a plan. Where more than one person from the business is attending, make sure each person has a plan. The show should pay for itself several times over by what you learn and/or buy. Make sure there is an ROI on the expense for attending. Three months after ask your staff to report on what’s being done differently due to attending the show. This keeps everyone’s focus sharp!

...we make it easy. If you specify, stock, install or commission PVC plastic below ground drainage systems for domestic or commercial projects, then YOU need the Wavin QUICK START Guide to Compliance! Since the introduction of the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations on 1st March 2014, all projects above 40m² require an Assigned Certifier who is responsible for issuing a Certificate of Compliance at the end of each project. In order to sign off on any project, it is vital that all design, product and installation meet current Irish Building Regulations. As a market leader in the supply of plastic pipe systems to the Irish Construction industry, Wavin has produced a simple 4 page guide to compliance for plastic below ground drainage. This is available now from your local Wavin representative. The Quick start guide includes a full product specification table for Wavin drainage products and will be an invaluable tool for the following – Specifier: To ensure the correct product type has been specified on the project. The table details product technical data and which specification it complies to in line with current Irish Building Regulations. Stockist: To ensure the correct Wavin product is ordered by detailing specific product codes. Builder: To check that product on site meets current building regulations. For example: On site check for wall thickness. This information is supplied in the specification table. Inspector: Will use all elements of the specification table from identifying the appropriate standard to verifying the correct product is used for that application.

IRISH BUILDING REGULATIONS PART H 2010 – DRAINAGE & WASTE WATER DISPOSAL This is the current relevant section of the Irish Building Regulations relating to drainage materials and requirements. It sets out what materials can be used and what minimum standards should apply to these materials. The two tables below taken from the current Building Regulations Part H 2010, clearly outline the materials and applicable standards that must be met when installing drainage and waste water systems. Wavin can supply you with pipe and fittings that conform to EN1401 for solid wall and EN13476 for structured wall or multi-layer pipe. We can also supply WAJ inspection chambers to EN 13598-1. HRI SCHEME

THE HARDWARE JOURNAL

According to figures released to The Hardware Journal by the Revenue Commissioners, home owners availing of the Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme undertook renovation work to the value of €293m on 14,438 properties in 2014.

HOME OWNERS SPEND €293M ON RENOVATIONS County by county, the biggest takeup was in Dublin and its hinterland, and in Cork. Dublin home owners, for example, undertook work on over 9,000 properties throughout Fingal, Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and South County Dublin to a value of over €162m, more than half of the value of works for the country overall. This would be in line with the population densities and the general view that the pace of recovery is stronger in the big cities and towns. The county-by-county breakdown (with Dublin broken into its four local authority areas) up to 2nd January, 2015 of the number of works and the value of works is shown below. A separate table lists the top five categories of works by value. Since 15th October, 2014, the HRI has now been extended to rental properties and will further add to the level of legitimate activity in the general construction sector. Since January 13th, 2015, homeowners who paid for HRI Works between 25th October, 2013 and 31st December, 2014 can go online and claim their tax credit. The tax credit will be applied evenly between the 2015 and 2016 tax years. Since 13th January, there have been 1,240 separate claims so far for a total of €2.8m which will be applied between 2015 and 2016. The Home Renovation Incentive was introduced in October 2013 with two main aims: • to boost activity in the legitimate construction sector; and

to give a tax credit to homeowners for renovation and similar work on their main private residence. The Revenue Commissioners see the HRI as an important support for employment and self-employment in the tax compliant construction sector. It is also seen as a spur to increased sales in building supplies, hardware and related businesses.

CHRISTMAS TRADING

The Hardware Journal looks back at the Christmas trading period and sees what lessons it may hold for the year ahead. Hardware retailers from stores around the country provide their impressions from the retail frontline, while an overview of recent retail and construction industry research indicates sales were steady, rather than spectacular.

STEADY RUN-UP TO CHRISTMAS WITH OVERALL RETAIL SALES MARGINALLY UP

CHRISTMAS TRADING THE HARDWARE JOURNAL

Construction materials, including items such as plaster and insulation, were big buys, reflecting increased activity in the construction industry. Julien is positive about 2015. “I am very optimistic, things are definitely turning around. For around five years everything was down on the previous year, then in March 2014 things stabilised and in April, you could see the turnaround,” he added. Shane Felle, owner of Shannonside Building Supplies, found that, while December trading was solid, it was a little flat in comparison to the preceding six months. Those six months, though, were significantly stronger trading months, compared to the same period in the previous year. According to Shane, sales were up 10% during this time. “The six months up until November 2014 were very busy. I am not sure why, maybe people got ahead of themselves and projects finished up earlier than anticipated. Sales were up, maybe 10%. The trade side was driving that, not the retail side,” said Shane. He is hopeful that there will be another 10% increase in sales in 2015. He adds that unlike four or five years ago, January through to March tend to be quiet months now. Overall retail performance There was a notable decrease in the number of items purchased by consumers this Christmas. Customers were buying less, but buying better.

Individual hardware businesses around the country reported varying experiences but all were fundamentally positive. Personal perspectives Dermot Kehoe, owner of Dermot Kehoe Supply & DIY Ltd, in New Ross, Co. Wexford, shared his views on the Christmas 2014 trading period. “Sales were up by 20% on December 2013. It was a bit more than what was expected, but this has been coming for the last few years,” he said. Christmas decorations, ornaments and real and artificial Christmas trees were a driving force behind the increased sales. Following a several-year-long slump in this market, consumers started purchasing these items once again. Dermot said: “People were investing more in Christmas products in December, and they were looking for

quality, rather than the cheaper products.” Dermot hopes December’s upturn bodes well for the future. “It is definitely more positive,” he said. “We are not out of the woods yet but people are not as afraid to spend money as they once were, and they seem to be looking for more quality products.” Julien Flynn, owner of Topline Flynns, Co. Galway, also reported an increase in sales, when compared with the previous year He was satisfied with how Christmas went but even more pleased at the overall performance throughout the year, he told The Hardware Journal. “Sales were up in December, but that was based on a low figure last year. Overall, though, the hardware department was up about 35% in 2014 compared to 2013. We didn’t expect it to be that high, but there is definitely more activity around enquiries and prices.”

Christmas 2014 trade was marginally up on Christmas 2013 in the retail sector overall, according to Retail Excellence Ireland. It would seem that while all the indicators pointed to a vibrant Christmas 2014, seven years of frugality proved a hard habit to break. The expectation was that the last few days before Christmas would be buoyant, but unfortunately trading failed to ignite. Some of the key developments in December: • Home for Christmas – around the country there was a reasonable increase in footfall and retail sales in the immediate run-up to Christmas as a significant customer cohort exited the cities and returned home for the holidays. • Margin madness – there has been an unheralded level of retailer promotional activity in the run-up to Christmas 2014. While sales might have grown slightly, margin is most definitely down. • Quality not quantity – there was a notable decrease in the number of items purchased by consumers this Christmas. Customers were buying less, but buying better.

CHRISTMAS TRADING

• Because we’re worth it – many retailers reported some enhanced self-gifting activity. It would seem that discretionary spending on ourselves is increasing slightly. • House proud – a return by consumers to getting the house ‘set’ for Christmas. We are becoming more focused on creating a sense of occasion around the Christmas holiday season.

• The importance of difference – it is clear that consumers today actively seek out difference. Thus retailers who have delivered an innovative product range in an innovative store setting are outperforming their competitor set. • Online spike – while off a relatively low base, online sales grew exponentially with many larger retailers struggling to meet demand. Some had to abandon ‘click and collect’ services

as they simply could not cope. • Long weekend – Black Friday and Cyber Monday marked the starting point for Christmas 2014. Those retailers who were prepared for the occasion did well. • Busiest day – the secondary school teachers strike which coincided with December children’s allowance payments day proved to be the busiest day in the run-up to Christmas 2014.

CONSTRUCTION FINISHES STRONGLY IN 2014

The Irish construction sector maintained its recent run of strong growth in activity at the end of 2014. New orders also continued to expand sharply, albeit at a weaker pace, while companies took on extra staff at a rapid rate. The Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) – a seasonally adjusted index designed to track changes in total construction activity – remained well above the 50.0 no-change mark in December, posting 63.1, down slightly from 63.5 in November. This signalled a further strong monthly increase in activity, albeit the slowest in three months. The average reading for 2014 as a whole was the highest since the series began in mid-2000.

HOUSING WORK INCREASES

Where activity increased, this was linked to rising new business, with the housing sector mentioned as a source of growth by some companies. Residential activity continued to rise sharply, despite the pace of expansion slowing for the third month running. The fastest rise of the three categories of construction was on commercial activity. Meanwhile, civil engineering activity increased for the third month running, and at the steepest pace since October 2006.

RISE IN EMPLOYMENT

Higher levels of new work and the prospect of further improvements in 2015 led construction firms in Ireland to raise their staffing levels again in December. The 16th successive monthly increase in employment was sharp, and broadly in line with that seen in the previous month. A substantial rise in sub-contractor usage was recorded in December, with the rate of expansion the strongest since February 2006. Companies reacted to higher new orders by raising their purchasing activity again in December, and at a sharp pace. This increase in demand for inputs created additional workloads for suppliers, in turn resulting in a lengthening of delivery times. Meanwhile, input costs continued to rise sharply. Construction firms generally expect economic conditions in Ireland to improve further during 2015, resulting in optimism around the prospects for activity over the next 12 months. Although below November’s record, sentiment remained among the strongest registered in the PMI index series to date.

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the US that heralds the start of seasonal shopping mania there, crossed the Atlantic and delivered a spike in sales for Irish retailers at the end of November.

THE HARDWARE JOURNAL VIEW FROM ABROAD

The latest research on what the customer is looking for in 2015 falls into two basic categories. Consumers are either going for price and leaning towards online shopping or they are visiting a store for an experience.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE Shelves should be full and shelf talkers in the correct position, otherwise customer frustration could occur.

VIEW FROM ABROAD THE HARDWARE JOURNAL

Bricks retailers need to provide a memorable experience if they are to develop their business we are being told, writes John Stanley. The challenge is to first identify and then create the experience that consumers are looking for in your business. Retailers who believe they are introducing an ‘experience’ as a business strategy, in my view, are getting it wrong. The consumer experience is not any one initiative, it is the result of multiple interactions that the consumer has when engaged with the business. The experience defines the business for the customer. Build an experience for your Customers The challenge is not what you or I think is a great experience – that may not be a great experience for someone else. We are all different and have different likes and dislikes. Often these perceptions are based on age, nationality and status. You will not get it right for everyone, but your team need to be empowered to be flexible in the way they provide the consumer experience. Six experience-building business practices are outlined here.

1

Retail is detail Consumers shop with their eyes and make decisions based on what they see. If the view puts a smile on their face, then they are more likely to have a positive, memorable experience. Visual retail attention can be divided into hygiene standards, merchandising standards and display standards. A team member should walk the store every day before the door is opened, to check hygiene standards. That starts at the front door and includes toilets and checkout area. A dirty door handle could be the one factor that tips the customer into a negative experience. Shelves should be full and shelf talkers in the correct position, otherwise customer frustration could occur. Displays should be theatrical and memorable, this is

where the retailer can really shine compared to competitors.

introduce appreciation marketing. This could be in the form of an email, phone call or even an oldfashioned letter. If consumers feel they are appreciated and remembered they are more likely to look on the in-store experience in a positive way.

Recognise people as individuals We are all individuals and want to be treated that way. Compare the consumer’s attitude to a retail experience with a team member who says, ‘Hi, my name is John, how are you today?’ and a sales person who says, ‘Can I help you?’. Engaged consumers are more likely to have a positive experience in-store. Remember personal details The true experience starts for a consumer when the sales team member remembers personal details. My local electrical supply store did this exceptionally well. I purchased a TV from them, six months later I went there to purchase another item and the salesperson started the conversation by asking how I liked the TV and was I happy with it. He had no records in front of him to check, he was brilliant at personalisation. Introduce retail etiquette Etiquette is ‘common sense’, or so we are told. In fact it is ‘rare sense’. Retail etiquette is what we should be doing as courtesy and as good citizens. It includes holding the door open for a customer, loading a car if the items are heavy, helping the less abled, assisting with carrying items and so on. Many retailers think this happens automatically as it is common sense. Alas, it is not common.

6

Delight strategy I was introduced to this strategy a long time ago. Delight = expectation + 1. It is one of the simplest rules of retailing, but it does not get implemented as often as it should. It means sales teams need to be empowered to be able to delight the consumer by introducing something that is low cost to the retail business and high value to the consumer. I have often used the example of the travel agent who includes tokens for luggage trolleys at an overseas airport, when you often do not have change after landing. Get all the small parts of the strategy in place and the result may be that the consumer has a positive experience, the reward is they then become an ambassador for your business and start marketing your business for you. Peer to peer marketing is the best marketing you can have.

Appreciation marketing The customer’s relationship with the store and the product does not finish when the consumer walks out the door. One could argue that, for the customer, it is only just starting. Depending on the amount spent and the type of product, now is the time to

HEALTH & SAFETY

In the latest in our ongoing series, compiled in cooperation with the Health and Safety Authority, we look at the safety precautions that need to be taken when reversing vehicles or mobile equipment

REVERSING SAFELY In Ireland, a recent analysis of fatal accident statistics showed that reversing activities were involved in 11% of all fatal workplace transport accidents. Reversing incidents that do not result in injury can result in costly damage to vehicles, plant, equipment and premises. Most of these incidents can be avoided by taking simple safety precautions. The main problem with reversing is poor visibility. For instance, when articulated lorries are reversing into loading bays, the trailer often blocks the visibility of the back of the vehicle. The risk of a reversing incident may be further increased by the speed the vehicle is being driven at. However, the majority of reversing accidents actually occur at low speed. On investigating reversing accidents, the main cause can usually be attributed to a failure to manage - the workplace, the vehicle, the driver or a combination of these three aspects of workplace transport management safety.

What an employer/person in control of a workplace must do

Identify what vehicle manoeuvres are necessary and avoid the need to reverse, where possible. This will form part of your workplace transport risk assessment. Eliminate reversing where possible, by providing one-way traffic systems, vehicle turning points, drive-through loading and unloading systems or engineering systems such as vehicle turntables. Good design and layout of the workplace can eliminate reversing but this is not always feasible in older workplaces. Reorganise traffic routes and loading and unloading procedures or increase the space for storing materials, where possible, to avoid reversing. If reversing cannot be eliminated, plan out the reversing area. Good all-round vision is essential, if reversing is to be carried out. Consult with staff, drivers and visiting drivers when planning the reversing area.

Provide a documented safe system of work for reversing activities. Make sure that all employees and visiting drivers are aware of how you operate and supervise the safe system of work. If vehicles must reverse, the most effective ways to improve safety during reversing operations are to: • separate pedestrians and vehicles; • improve the driver’s ability to see around the vehicle from the driving position; • keep people out of the reversing area; • create a vehicle-only area and keep the area free from obstructions; • make sure that there is enough space for reversing and provide large reversing areas, where possible – if the workplace is small, you may have to restrict the size of vehicles allowed to access your premises; and, • make sure that reversing areas are well laid out, clearly identified for both drivers and pedestrians, have adequate markings, signage and aids to increase visibility, such as mirrors. Remember, if left hand-drive vehicles visit your premises, they may have different lines of visibility. Place fixed mirrors in reversing areas, if required.

The vehicle

Make sure that the driver has good allround visibility. Provide extra visibility aids if necessary such as CCTV, convex internal rear view mirrors or convex segment wing mirrors. Make sure that all visibility aids and vehicle windscreens are kept clean and well maintained. Consider reversing aids or safety devices if appropriate, for example ‘sensing’ or ‘trip’ systems can assist in the detection of people or obstacles behind the reversing vehicle. Such systems must be correctly installed, set up and maintained. It is important to remember that these systems are an aid

Eliminate reversing where possible.

HEALTH & SAFETY THE HARDWARE JOURNAL

and are no substitute for good all-round visibility and driver awareness. Audible reversing alarms which warn people of the danger can be of assistance in certain situations. All alarms must be kept in good working order. Alarms should not be considered fail safe and should be used with a combination of control measures.

The driver and other people

Identify all the people likely to be affected by reversing on your site and make sure that employees and drivers have adequate instruction, information and training. Make sure that any visiting drivers are familiar with the workplace, the site rules regarding reversing and the reversing areas. Make sure that all employees understand everyone’s task. Reversing assistants are a last resort and should only be used where there is no other way to control the dangers of reversing vehicles. Make sure the reversing assistant is: • trained for the job; • authorised to be a reversing assistant; • wearing appropriate

high visibility personal protective equipment; • in full view of the driver at all times during vehicle movements; and, • in a safe position where he/she can guide the vehicle. The reversing assistant should never stand directly behind the vehicle. The above is merely a brief introduction to the topic; you can find essential additional information on reversing vehicles and on managing workplace transport in general at www.vehiclesatwork.ie or by contacting the HSA Workplace Contact Unit at 1890 289 389.

LEGAL PROVISIONS: Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone who may be affected by their work activity. As part of the risk assessment, workplace transport and the associated risk of reversing should be assessed and adequate control measures put in place to eliminate or reduce the risk of injury or damage to assets by reversing vehicles. The Act also requires that safe systems of work are planned, organised, performed and maintained. Where reversing cannot be eliminated, safe systems of work must be put in place for reversing vehicles. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations, 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007) require that outdoor and indoor places of work are organised in such a way that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate in a safe manner and that pedestrian and traffic routes are clearly identified for the protection of employees.

ANOTHER SIDE OF... SeamusClancy Seamus Clancy became a member of Laois Civil Defence in 1990, volunteering with his local unit in Durrow. The Civil Defence is a huge part of Seamus’s life – he met his wife, Sinead, there in 2002 and has made many friends – but the community service role that the Civil Defence plays in society is what makes it so worthwhile. By day, Seamus is a salesperson in Topline Phelan’s, in Durrow, but when he is not meeting customers and making orders, he is busy with his local branch of the Civil Defence in Durrow, which operates an ambulance and rescue service, as well as an auxillary fire service.

Seamus in uniform.

Seamus worked his way up through the ranks and has been commanderin-chief for the past eight years of his 25-year involvement. This is the highestranking, part-time role that exists and means that Seamus is repsonsible for: overseeing all activities from the base; organising and coordinating member training; and maintaining the ambulance, the rescue jeep, and the fire engine. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are approximately 18 members of Durrow’s Civil Defence unit, trained as medics, rescue technicians, and fire fighters. Aged between 19 and 55, all are volunteers, giving their own time for the benefit of others. “We provide, primarily, a community support role in the event of a major emergency, so we would support the fire service in that way,” explains Seamus. “We help to search for missing persons, we provide first aid cover for various events, including the Durrow Scarecrow Festival.” Laois Civil Defence units also have a presence at major events such as the National Ploughing Championships, held at Ratheniska, Co. Laois, for the past few years, as well as the Electric Picnic music and arts festival which takes place in Stradbally Hall, Co. Laois. “Civil Defence is an exciting organisation to be involved in, it is an evolving organisation and has a broad role in the community,” says Seamus. “But it is also a structured environment and you learn a lot about teamwork and how to work as part of a cohesive unit.” Generally, involvement in the organisation opens up wide-ranging opportunities for people. The Civil Defence College, its national training centre, develops and delivers training, skills and expertise in a variety of fields, such as missing persons search, flood response, casualty and welfare support, among others. “I really enjoy the camaraderie, I met my wife through the Civil Defence, they gave us a guard of honour at our wedding, it is a huge part of our lives.

Seamus Clancy, pictured during the day job in Topline Phelan’s, in Durrow.

“But the Civil Defence wouldn’t happen without the support of family, friends and the community,” he says. His employers are very understanding and supportive also, which means a great deal to Seamus. But sometimes the tasks the Civil Defence volunteers are faced with can be exceptionally challenging, such as in a missing person case. ”There can be unpleasant aspects to the job, but if this helps find closure for the family, then it is worth it, and sometimes there are positive outcomes too,” he says. Seamus describes working with the Civil Defence as almost like a vocation.“When you set out to help someone, it is very fulfilling, whether you are searching a river, climbing a mountain or attending a crash site,” he says. One of Seamus’s most memorable Civil Defence moments was when he had the opportunity to meet former Irish president, Mary McAleese, in Lourdes for the International Military Pilgrimage a number of years ago. “It was a spectacular event that involved the Defence Forces, Naval Service, Air Corps, Reserve Defence Forces and the Civil Defence, from Ireland, and Mary McAleese came over to visit us while we were there,” Seamus recalls fondly.
