Dear friends, I am grateful to you for coming to experience A Christmas Carol this holiday season, and hope that you will take a bit of joy away with you to spread to your friends and loved ones. London in 1850 was a melting pot, just as it is today, with a diverse population from all walks of life. In fact, it was in the mid-19th century that England began to colonize India, and emigration between the two continents increased. Bob Cratchit and the Cratchit family are traditionally represented as Caucasian, and if the character name is any indication, Charles Dickens likely envisioned them as such. To present A Christmas Carol in a homogenous way however turns a blind eye to what London really looked like at that time. The reality is that race dynamics were at play in the 1850s just as they are today. It would have been especially difficult for a South Asian Bob Cratchit to find work, making it more plausible to believe that he continued to work for Ebenezer Scrooge despite terrible conditions. Scrooge might have looked at Bob Cratchit as unlike himself, and therefore might have found it easier to ignore Cratchit’s problems. Scrooge’s position of power and privilege would have been all but absolute, and it’s easy to imagine how the spirits’ messages of mercy, charity and benevolence would never have reached his ears but for supernatural intervention. Our cultural consultant Alka Nayyar found this quote from "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" by Isabel Wilkerson that captures the essence of the play: “We are responsible for our own ignorance or, with time and openhearted enlightenment, our own wisdom.” Like Scrooge, we’re not bad people, we just see what we want to see, and we overlook things that don’t fit as easily into the puzzle we imagine the world to be. I hope that this holiday season you will look for those ill-fitting puzzle pieces, and recognize that all of us have the power to make change for good. Learn about our cast and crew (listed alphabetically). CHRIS BARDIZBANIAN (Young Scrooge, Ignorance) is a 5th grader at West Tatnuck Elementary in Worcester. He is excited to make his debut on The Hanover Theatre’s stage. He has performed a few skits with the Armenian youth art program and Worcester Public School’s summer art camp. He enjoys playing soccer and being a ninja at Ultimate Obstacles. Additionally, Chris plays the piano and is learning the trumpet this year. He is often recognized for his empathy, respect, and compassion for others at school. TIMOTHY EVANS (Music Director, Organist) is very happy to be returning to The Hanover Theatre for this year’s production. Tim holds a master of music in piano from Michigan State University and has taught on the faculty at Emmanuel College in Boston and the University of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas. He has music directed many local and regional productions in the Boston area, including over 500 performances of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change in Boston and on the national tour. He was also the music director for The All Night Strut in Boston and Los Angeles, and Sunrise Sunset: the Songs of Sheldon Harnick in Boston and Florida. He also collaborates with many Boston area cabaret artists. Timothy lives in Fairhaven, MA, with his husband, Howe Allen, and their two Jack Russell Terriers, Cheer and Davy.

She attended an acting course from the New York Film Awcademy during the pandemic to help strengthen her skills. She also played the lead role of Littlest One in the production Gossamer (Shrewsbury Public High School). SAMARTH SHENOY (Tiny Tim) is a student at the Floral Street School in Shrewsbury who likes eating cake! He participates in a variety of activities including soccer, karate (blue belt), and art-colored pencils are his favorite medium so far. Playing the role of Tiny Tim will be his stage debut! Samarth has fond memories of seeing Clifford at The Hanover Theatre. He can’t wait to share the stage with his big brother, Shriram. SHRIRAM SHENOY (Peter Cratchit) is a student at Oak Middle School in Shrewsbury. He enjoys cross country,
basketball, and karate. While he considers himself a “big sports person”, he also enjoys musical theatre and most recently appeared onstage at his school. Shriram’s favorite experience at The Hanover Theatre so far was seeing the national tour of Percy Jackson. He can’t wait to share the big stage with his younger brother, Samarth. CHARLOTTE SIEBELS (Youth Ensemble) a student at Oak Middle School in Shrewsbury, she enjoys being a part of the theatrical community, and is looking forward to performing again. Charlotte last appeared in A Christmas Carol in 2019 playing the role of Fan. She has participated in the Youth Summer Program with The Hanover Theatre Conservatory for the past four years (most recently in Fiddler on the Roof) and continues to take acting and improv classes. This fall, Charlotte was in her school’s production of This is a Test. When not in school, she sings with Worcester Children’s Chorus and the OMS Select Choir. JANE SIEBELS* (Production Stage Manager) is excited to return to A Christmas Carol, having worked on it with Troy in several venues off and on since 1996! Most recently she has been THT Rep’s Stage Manager for all of their plays at the Brick Box next door. Jane also is a Member of the Shrewsbury Cultural Council and, by day, a Children’s Librarian at Shrewsbury Public Library TROY SIEBELS (Director) serves as president and CEO of The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory, having led the organization’s development and staff since 2005. The theatre presents more than 140 performances to audiences of more than 180,000 annually and has welcomed more than two million visitors to date. MICHAEL SKRZEK* (Topper) is pleased to return home and perform on The Hanover Theatre stage once again. I can’t thank you enough.” Dear Friend, These words were written to me by Jason, a conservatory student from South High School in Worcester. I hope you’ll take a moment to read Jason’s story. It is a testament to the power of the performing arts and the potential of the youth in our community. Jason’s journey began in our Adopt-A-School program, which allowed him and his peers to attend performances of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical and Hadestown at The Hanover Theatre. A few months later, he brought his own lived experience to the stage through our WYSH (Worcester Youth Speak Honestly) program. Something deep within Jason was ignited by these shows, and his passion was heightened the first time he stepped on stage. He gave a powerful and honest performance sharing his experience as a first-generation American navigating the complexity of growing up in a multicultural household. Jason performed in his very first musical on our stage this summer and is now a year-round member of our Youth Acting Company. The stage has become his home— a place where he can express himself in ways that he didn’t know were possible just a few years ago. He has found his voice, his passion and his confidence. In the heart of our community, there’s a group of young individuals bursting with creativity and a desire to express themselves through theatre, dance and music. So that we may best serve patrons attending each event, please avoid visiting the box office to purchase tickets to future events during the hour prior to curtain time. On rare occasions, specific performers or engagements may request that this policy be suspended, in which case we will advise our patrons by covering lobby signage which lists the standard policy. All members of the press or media must receive advance authorization from the PR dept. (PR@thehanovertheatre.org) to use cameras or recording devices inside the theatre and must display identification upon arrival. Cell Phones: Out of respect to the performers and to fellow audience members, please remember to silence all cell phones while in the theatre. Also, please note, there is no telephone which is manned throughout the performance. Please be sure to leave your cellular number with anyone who may need to reach you during an emergency, and in the event of an emergency please take your call in the lobby. Children: All patrons MUST have a valid ticket. Parents are discouraged from bringing children under five years of age to performances which are not specifically oriented to children. Parents must remove any disruptive children from the theatre into the lobby. For these reasons, and for the comfort of all audience members, please consider carefully whether it is appropriate for you to bring children under five to the theatre.
Concessions: Please do not bring outside food and drinks to the theatre. Snacks and beverages are available for sale in the lobby. First Aid: Please speak with the house manager or any of the ushers if you need first aid or have any sort of accident or medical emergency. Insurance regulations require that such instances be documented immediately. Gift Certificates: These are available in any denomination and are available online, by calling or visiting the box office and may be used by the recipient in full or partial payment for event tickets or conservatory classes. Groups: Attending the theatre is even more fun when you bring a group. Groups of 10 or more may be eligible for a discount. For information, contact Amy Osborn at 508.471.1763. Inclement Weather Policy: It is generally impossible for touring shows and performances to be rescheduled, so we do not cancel events due to inclement weather. As with other touring performances and sporting events, we are unable to refund tickets. In extreme weather conditions we will do our best to exchange subscriber, FLEX package and member tickets to an alternate performance, if applicable. The theatre strongly recommends that you add on ticket insurance at the time of ticket purchase through Booking Protect to protect your purchase. Lost and Found: Management is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Items found at the theatre will be held by the house manager. If you have lost an item, please contact the box office as soon as possible to make a report. You will then be contacted if the item has been found. Retrieval of the item is the responsibility of the customer. Items not claimed within 30 days will be donated or disposed of without compensation. Prohibited items and activities which are prohibited include (but are not limited to): smoking, weapons, outside food or drinks, camera or recording devices, cell phones not silenced or set to vibrate, laser pointers, disruptive or abusive language, pets (except those assisting persons with disabilities), and persons exhibiting intoxication or drug use. Offenders may be removed from the theatre without compensation.| Rental of Theatre and Event Spaces: The Hanover Theatre is available for appropriate organizations and activities. Resale of Tickets for Profit: Ticket holders may on occasion be in a position where they have purchased tickets that they later cannot personally use and will want to donate, give, trade or sell these tickets to friends or acquaintances. Management does not discourage private transactions of this nature. However, we may take appropriate actions to thwart the organized resale of tickets for profit by third parties, which we do not condone. The public is advised to be careful purchasing tickets from individuals they do not know personally, as such tickets may be void and in such cases admission to the theatre will be denied without compensation. Standing Room: All persons entering the theatre must have a valid ticket, and are not allowed to stand in the back or aisles.
