A Message from The Head of School

ach year, we look for as many opportunities as possible to acknowledge and thank the many people and organizations who support The Gunnery through their time, talents and treasures. This Annual Report of Philanthropy does this formally and publicly recognizes the individuals, families and community partners who have chosen The Gunnery as one of their philanthropic priorities and made a gift during the 2016-2017 fund year. It was a record-breaking year on many fronts, and you played an important part in meeting those milestones! We are sincerely grateful for your generosity and the leadership and commitment of our board, alumni, parents and friends who have contributed to our continued success. Each member of our community plays an important role in helping us invest in our faculty, facilities and programs, all of which contributes to the student experience here at The Gunnery. In addition to the impressive showing of support listed in this report, below are a few highlights from our accomplishments during the 2016-2017 fiscal year:

• At the start of the school year, 22 freshman girls moved into our beautiful new dorm, Susan G. Graham House, the first major capital project specifically for girls since the school returned to its co-educational roots in 1978.

• Our exciting new Innovation, Design, Engineering and Applied Scholarship (IDEAS) program is growing and attracting an increasing number of new and prospective students. Most recently, NASA awarded a $6,000 grant to our Robotics Team, which is entering a robotics contest for the first time as part of the IDEAS program.

• Our Outdoor Program, which aims to involve every student in a progressive series of outdoor experiences over the course of four years, continues to expand, providing students with opportunities to engage with the natural world across our curriculum.

• We continue to build on the success of our LEADS

the boarding school experience. Our Freshman Team has done a tremendous job helping our students achieve success by offering an intentional curriculum, a separate study hall for freshmen, and team-building activities such as the annual three-day freshman trip to Lake Placid.

• The Center for Academic Support is succeeding in its new location, with a team of learning specialists dedicated to helping students become efficient, effective, independent learners and articulate selfadvocates. As I shared in a recent blog post on “Giving Thanks,” we are grateful for the enthusiasm surrounding our school right now, as made manifest in particular by the positive response to our efforts to design and fund our new Arts and Community Center. This is a thrilling and significant project for our school, not just in terms of the building itself, but the intentions behind it and the transformation that will take place on our campus. For our school to be able to announce that $10 million has already been committed towards the total cost of the project gave us all a tremendous amount to be grateful for, especially with regard to the donors who have given so generously to make that possible. This is truly an exciting time for all of us in The Gunnery community — we have so much to be proud of and thankful for, and we remain inspired and motivated by the ambitious plans and prospects of the future. As we continue to build on our momentum, we look forward to engaging with you, celebrating our accomplishments, planning for the future, and continuing to honor and advance the legacy of Mr. Gunn, whose vision continues to guide us and whose spirit lives on in our school today.

A Message from Development

y all accounts, the 2017 fiscal year (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017) was The Gunnery’s most successful fundraising year yet. In addition to recording our largest annual fund year ever, our endowment is at an all-time high, and the Tisch family has committed $10 million — the largest single gift in school history — to be divided between the new Arts and Community Center and the endowment. As I begin my fourth year as Director of Alumni & Development, the excitement focused on our future is palpable, and my gratitude for the increasing engagement of and support from our constituents continues to grow. Over the last several years, the hard work and collaboration of a number of people — both here at the school and beyond — has led to the completion of Strategic and Campus Master plans that outline a vision for our school over the next decade or more. The successful implementation of these plans will elevate The Gunnery from “a school on the rise” to a market leader. Through the commitment and participation of each and every one of us — students, faculty and staff, administrators, board members, volunteers, and all of our alumni, parents and friends — we will build the foundation on which future generations of Highlanders will flourish. The easiest way you can help is by volunteering your time. Without the dedication of our volunteer leaders, our staff alone could never reach all of the individuals in the various constituencies we serve. We rely heavily on the work of the Alumni Association and its seven subcommittees. If you’re interested in donating your time to assist with admissions gatherings in your area, to help plan regional alumni events, to engage with young alumni and/or serve as an alumni mentor, or to serve as a class representative to help plan Alumni Weekend and grow The Gunnery Fund, please feel free to contact me directly. If you’d like to explore these opportunities with fellow alumni before you step forward, the Executive Committee members (Laura Eanes Martin ’90 P’20, Omar Slowe ’97, Krystalynn Schlegel ’96, and Scott Schwind ’89) would be happy to talk with you. The next best way to support the school’s continued growth and path to financial sustainability is to give to The Gunnery Fund. Last year 1,475 people gave a total of $1.39 million to The Gunnery Fund, in increments from $1 to $50,000. Every gift is important and meaningful to each individual, and has an impact on every area of campus life. Supporting your alma mater is not intended to be painful; we’re not asking you to give beyond your means. All we are asking is that you demonstrate your support of the school — its past and its future — by making a gift each and every year. If an alumnus were to make a recurring monthly online gift of $83.33 starting on January 1 (equivalent to $2.76 per day) their gift would add up to $500 by June 30. If, for example, 400 people were to do that (fewer than 10 percent of the total living alumni population), we would raise an additional $200,000. Not incidentally, that is the amount by which we are looking to grow the fund in 2018.

Through the commitment and participation of each and every one of us — students, faculty and staff, administrators, board members, volunteers, and all of our alumni, parents and friends — we will build the foundation on which future generations of Highlanders will flourish.

If there is any question about the excitement surrounding our school, one has to look no further than our students, who achieved 100 percent participation, and Gunnery parents, who achieved a record-breaking 80 percent participation rate in The Parents Fund this year. A total of $328,256 was raised through The Parents Fund, which supports The Gunnery Fund, and for this we are extremely grateful. On Parents Weekend in 2016, our parents also sponsored a raffle with all of the proceeds dedicated toward the purchase of a new SMART Board® in the physics lab. The goal for the fund in 2018 is $360,000. We look forward to seeing whether parents can top this year’s record and come even closer to the goal of 100 percent participation. Of course, in addition to growing the annual fund, we also need to continue building the endowment. At $23.6 million, our endowment grew by more than $2 million in 2017. However, we still lag behind our peers. To ensure that we continue to attract and retain the most qualified students and faculty, offer creative and meaningful academic programs, provide appropriate co-curricular opportunities, and maintain our existing facilities, we will require significant investment. We cannot rely on investment performance alone and we will need to continue to add to the principal. In the spring of 2017, we were fortunate to receive endowment gifts in support of scholarships and faculty support totaling $600,000. Additionally, a portion of the Tisch brothers’ generous pledge has been earmarked as unrestricted endowment. As we look to the future, our vision is bold and ambitious. It’s exciting to think about writing this letter next year — or in three or five years — to reflect on the continued success and measurable progress. It will take the support of all our alumni, parents, and friends to achieve these goals. The “Teddy Award” is given in loving memory of Edward “Teddy” Bright Ebersol beloved member of the Class of 2008 who died tragically on November 28, 2004 at the age of 14 in a private plane crash near Telluride, Colorado. The “Teddy Award” is given to that member of the freshman class who embodies Teddy’s finest qualities: generosity, enthusiasm, respect, responsibility, perseverance, optimism and loyalty. It is awarded to a young man/ woman of great hope and great promise.
