Elementary school collects food for homeless

The Ritchie Park Elementary School PTA held its 10th annual Community Service Snack Sacks for the Homeless Event on March 27. Parents and students gathered at the Rockville school to assemble 250 sandwiches and meal bags for the Women’s Shelter in Rockville that’s operated by Interfaith Works. Helpers also made crafts for the children at the Children’s Inn at NIH. Students were asked to bring in donated food throughout the week. The PTA also collected dog and cat treats for the Montgomery County Humane Society. Local grocers and restaurants also contributed to the effort.

Rockville honored for clean water Rockville has clean water, according to an industry group. The city’s water treatment plant has received the Directors Award of Recognition from the Partnership for Safe Water, a program developed by the Environmental Protection Agency and the American Water Works Association, according to a city news release. Rockville is among the municipalities to be honored by the partnership with a plaque in June at the annual conference of the association, the largest and oldest worldwide organization dedicated to safe water. “We continually strive to optimize operations and improve the quality of water we deliver to our customers,” said Craig Simoneau, director of the city’s Department of Public Works. “Achievement of the Directors Award demonstrates our ongoing commitment to protecting

public health.” The Partnership for Safe Water is a voluntary self-assessment and optimization program for water treatment plant and distribution system operation. It has more than 250 utility subscribers, serving more than 100 million people. Members participate in a fourphase self-assessment and peer review process, developed by industry experts.

MADD meets at Rockville library The Maryland chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving will hold a community meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Rockville to announce new data about underage drinking prevention from a national survey of high school students. The talk precedes the group’s fourth annual PowerTalk 21 day on April 21, a national day for parents to start talking with their children about alcohol. The day is designed to coincide with the start of high school prom season. The talk at Rockville Memorial Library will feature Herman Bonaparte, program coordinator with MADD, and Jan Withers, the group’s national president. The library is at 21 Maryland Ave.

CORRECTIONS An April 2 story about Montgomery County Council candidate Tom Moore misstated the high school he attended and when he graduated from law school. It also misstated the number of children he has. The April 2 School Snapshot chart incorrectly referred to prekindergartners through fifth-graders at Westland Middle School. Westland has grades 6 through 8. In “Riverdale man convicted in stabbing,” published April 2, the name of Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, was misspelled.
