DINING ‘LIVE’ A sampling of restaurants in Prince George’s County that feature live acts and other entertainment BOBBY MCKEY’S DUELING PIANO BAR

HARRINGTON’S PUB & KITCHEN It’s a wonderful mix of classic rock covers and popular Irish sing-alongs that sets Harrington’s apart from the pack, and that’s no blarney. Along with the music—which features local artists in the Irish pub circuit each Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evening—Harrington’s serves up traditional pub and Irish fare, including shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and bangers and mash. On weekends, once the live music ends, a deejay plays tunes for patrons’ listening and dancing pleasure. The pub hosts special events and larger bands—like Points of Roguery and Lloyd Dobler Effect—on occasion. 177 Fleet St. National Harbor 20745 301-909-2505 harringtonspubandkitchen.com

No two shows are ever the same at Bobby McKey’s. “They are so crowddriven and interactive. There’s nothing else like this in town,” said Beth Ketchum, the restaurant’s director of marketing. Dueling pianists—top entertainers brought in from across the country—take requests. “There’s a lot of call and response.” Lyrics occasionally are doctored to provide some adult humor. And, everyone is welcome to dance, something you’ll catch the servers doing several times a night. Don’t expect to get Saturday tickets the night of. They sell out weeks in advance. 172 Fleet St. National Harbor 20745 301-602-2209 bobbymckeys.com

MCLOONE’S PIER HOUSE

BUSBOYS AND POETS

There’s a lot of talent packed into this 130-seat restaurant every Friday and Saturday night. “The owner is a musician, so music is a big part of what we’re about,” said general manager Rob Doyle. The event calendar features everything from jazz combos to four-piece classic rock bands, “but solo acoustic (acts) fit best.” Easy listening underscores dinner conversations and gives those at the bar a chance to dance. The restaurant’s capacity doubles come summer. With the doors open, music drifts out to the deck overlooking the harbor, a great place to enjoy seafood, steak or pasta. 141 National Plaza National Harbor 20745 301-839-0815 mcloonespierhousenh.com

You need to act quickly to get tickets to Thursday’s open-mic poetry night. It’s the diversity of voices and perspectives—on display from 9 to 11 p.m.— that helps pack the house. An appetite for the spoken word and traditional American fare heighten the experience. The talent showcase—the third Friday of the month—draws a crowd as well. “Whether you’re a musician, comedian, poet, actor or magician, we invite you to take our stage,” said Pamela Pinnock, the restaurant’s marketing and events director. Up to four $5 tickets can be purchased online starting at midnight the day of the show. 5331 Baltimore Ave. Hyattsville 20781 301-779-2787 busboysandpoets.com

NEW DEAL CAFÉ CALVERT HOUSE INN Looking to jazz up your Sunday? Brunch at the Calvert House Inn ought to do it. The beat goes on from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. courtesy of local jazz soloists and combos. Consider the top-selling eggs Benedict or crab omelet, a house specialty, to accompany the music. Music has always been integral to the weekend dining experience at Calvert House, now celebrating its 50th anniversary. On Fridays and Saturdays, a pianist takes requests during dinner. “She plays a lot of oldies, but does some contemporary music as well,” said Susan Salimi, the restaurant’s co-owner. 6211 Baltimore Ave., Riverdale 20737 301-864-5220 calverthouseinn.com 22 Entertainment Guide 2013 | SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TO THE GAZETTE & GAZETTE-STAR

There’s nothing predictable or staid about the music at this Lebanese restaurant. “It’s all over the board and that’s intentional. We want to give people a taste of many genres,” said manager Amethyst Dwyer. As much a “listening house” as a restaurant, New Deal Café’s offerings run from Renaissance-inspired Tudor rock to Balkan-Klezmer-Gypsy jazz and swing—not to mention classical guitar, blues, funk, reggae, country and contemporary. “We have a very special vibe.” A pianist plays dinner music from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, before the bands start. There’s never a cover and only Mondays are silent. 113 Centerway, Roosevelt Center Greenbelt 20770 301-474-5642, newdealcafe.com

New Deal Café OLD BOWIE TOWN GRILLE You can say you heard it here first. “We have a cool track record of starting musicians and bands that move on after getting gig-ready playing here,” said restaurant owner Bob Thompson. Veteran and newcomer bands—playing everything from progressive, classic and Celtic rock to jazz—heat up the house most Friday and Saturday nights. The Sunday all-acoustic open-mic night is popular and the Wednesday night Classic Jam attracts music lovers from Baltimore to Annapolis. PEACHEZ CAFE AND LOUNGE The stage at Peachez Cafe and Lounge is rarely dark. The music—“usually jazz or a little R&B,” said owner Adrianne Goode—is integral to the fine dining experience at this intimate, swanky café. “We offer low-key entertainment. Some (acts) are new, some nationally known, but they all have a stage presence.” Bands are small, no more than five pieces, and there’s room for dancing. Known for its bartenders’ “extravagant elixirs” and American-Creole signature dishes, such as shrimp and grits, Peachez also offers a top-rated Sunday brunch. Reservations are encouraged, as the popular restaurant seats just 90. 5010 Brown Station Road Upper Marlboro 20772 301-780-3467 peachezcafeandlounge.com

Solo acts—such as a classic rock guitarist—or duos entertain on Thursday nights from 7 to 10. “It’s always music everyone can enjoy; nothing too loud that’ll interfere with dinner,” said owner Terrie Haas, who started as a bartender more than 25 years ago when the family restaurant was a nightclub. Local bands play on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sully’s has trivia on Wednesdays, karaoke on Fridays and a seven-days-a-week down-home menu featuring some of the largest, baked Idaho potatoes on the East Coast. 9624 Fort Meade Road Laurel 20707 301-498-7427 sullivans-steakhouse.com COURTESY OF BOBBY MCKEY’S DUELING PIANO BAR
