National Night Out raised $3,600 in Olney The 20th celebration of National Night Out on Aug. 6 in Olney was a success, said Jon Hulsizer, executive director of the Olney Chamber of Commerce, which organized the event. That pushes Olney’s 20-year National Night Out fundraising total to more than $50,000. Hulsizer said that despite fears of rain, about 3,500 members of the Olney-Sandy Spring community turned out for the festivities. In recognition of Olney’s 20th annual event, the General Assembly issued a citation and the Montgomery County Council proclaimed the date National Night Out in

An electric vehicle built by Takisha Reece’s Advanced Placement environmental science class at Sandy Spring Friends School won several awards in its debut competition, the 2013 D.C. Electric Vehicle Grand Prix this summer. The vehicle was named Best Technical Innovation and had the Best Graphic. The team won Best Team Photo and took fourth place overall. The class came up with the idea of building a battery-powered vehicle as a class project in December and started building it in March. Reece said that at times the project was challenging, and she often wondered if the students had taken on a larger task than they could handle. “We hit roadblock after roadblock, but I quickly embraced them, realizing each one enhanced the overall student experience as an opportunity to learn while building problemsolving skills and collaboration,” she said. “In only two months, through many weekend building sessions, with a group of dedicated students, and a supportive community, we were ready to compete.”
