Continued from Page A-1 agency, according to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. Alexis Magill said her eatery, with its pub fare and constant live entertainment events, regularly serves NIST employees and initially drew a big crowd on the first day of the shutdown, Oct. 1. “On Tuesday we were absolutely packed,” she said. “I think some people thought they would only be off for a few

days.” Since then, however, customer traffic has dwindled and Magill estimated that the restaurant has seen about a 30 percent slash in sales during lunchtime. Besides losing sales during the slowdown, Magill has been forced to give workers fewer hours because they are unneeded. “We had to cut staff down during that time, which of course affects their pockets,” she said. Bartender Stephanie Ayton
said she noticed the number of bar customers drop off, as well as the amount of money she takes home, due to the partial government shutdown. “There has been a decrease in what the bar has been taking in and what I’ve been taking in,” she said. While federal government offices remain closed, Magill said she is trying to bring in more customers by extending the restaurant’s “all-day” happy hour for government employees, stretching it from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Those who show valid government identification can take advantage of all bar specials during that time, including an exclusive deal that offers $1 off any Flying Dog draft beer. For now, the Darnestown couple are optimistic that business from regular patrons and dinner service can sustain their restaurant. “We aren’t nervous about it just yet,” Magill said. “We just hope it doesn’t last too much longer. jedavis@gazette.net

PLANS
Continued from Page A-1 Schwarz presented the updated proposed amendment to the city council after several residents brought up concerns about pedestrian access and connectivity at a Sept. 16 meeting. The annexation agreement now requires a pedestrian and bicycle connectivity plan in conjunction with the schematic development plan submission. The plan will also include details about landscape and hardscape use to create entrances to adjacent Malcolm King Park. In response to citizen concerns that more apartments and a health club are unnecessary additions, a public memo from
Schwarz to the mayor and council explained the decision to proceed with both of the structures. “Growth trends nationally and especially regionally reflect a strong market for mixed-use, transit-oriented, walkable communities with close proximity to amenities,” the memo said. “Fewer and fewer of the younger generations are seeking singlefamily neighborhoods in favor of a 24/7 amenitized environment where one can work, live and play within a one-mile radius.” Aside from office, residential and health club use, the annexation agreement does not allow for any other retail uses, according to the memo. The parcel has been owned by Boston Properties since 1998. jedavis@gazette.net
