Carlyssa Prather was cho-

sen for a $1,000 scholarship from Kohl’s Cares, a philanthropic program, for generosity and dedication. Carlyssa volunteers at the Rainbow Outreach Ministries food pantry in Gaithersburg, where she sorts donations, greets families and delivers food to those in need. She is a rising secondgrader at Sandy Spring Friends School. Her mother, Saundra Prather, said generosity is in her daughter’s nature. “Her report cards always talk about empathy and wanting to help others,” Prather said. Sometimes that empathy becomes a detriment when Carlyssa tries to give away her toys, her mother said, but she’s learning to balance that. Prather said Carlyssa volunteers a few hours a week, depending on the needs of the pantry. She started to be conscious of those in need after completing a school project about what it means to be in a community. “She’s always thinking of others,” Prather said. In addition to volunteering, Carlyssa enjoys playing the piano and performing in plays at her school. Melia Gayaldo, 9, of Silver Spring also was chosen to receive a scholarship. Melia collected hundreds of pairs of gloves and socks to donate to local organizations. The scholarship is intended to help fund higher education for the recipients, which range in age from elementary school to high school students. Kohl’s Cares is affiliated with department store chain Kohl’s Corp.
