City recognizes Garman for dedication to youth

tributed to the initiative’s success, including Asbury Methodist Village, the city of Gaithersburg, Montgomery County and Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. “Without them, there wouldn’t be anything,” he said Asbury Methodist Village is a continuing care retirement community. This year, 21 Asbury residents are mentoring 24 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from Gaithersburg elementary and middle schools. Mentors work with the students by taking them to different events and collaborating on various activities. They improve their reading skills by reading Phyllis Naylor’s children’s books and traveling to Washington to witness festivities for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Even though much has already been achieved through the initiative, Garman said, more work must be done. “The reason we called it the beloved community initiative is because if you read what the beloved community is really supposed to be, we don’t have it. But we can grow into it,” he said. “We use the word ‘initiative’ because we’re still working on it. There’s a lot to do.”

Hal Garman, an Asbury Methodist Village resident and retired church pastor, has made it his mission to keep young people from going down the wrong path in life.

Fueled by the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Garman, 78, has fostered the idea of a “beloved community initiative” in Gaithersburg since January 2011 by promoting community teamwork and encouraging Asbury senior citizens to mentor young people. “Basically, it’s about building relationships and working with people to help them develop their sense of self-esteem and their selfworth,” he said. This month, the city of Gaithersburg recognized Garman and his dedication to the community with a Person of Character award. “In my mind, I received it on behalf of all the people who have been involved with the beloved community initiative,” he said. He said groups and entities throughout the region have con-
