STAR BOYS is about what happens when sexual revolution arrives into a conservative and religious small town in Northern Finland, as seen by the 13-year-old Star Boy singers who are forced to observe their parents’ sexual liberation and its consequences at too close range. It’s a powerful story of two families of architects being torn apart by crumbling of moral conceptions and the parents’ endless need for love and freedom. After a fatal toga party, no one and nothing is the same, and the boys’ confusion erupts violently… Even though STAR BOYS deals with heavy themes, it is ultimately a warm and positive survival story that portrays the persistence and capacity of children to get over even most difficult experiences in life.

The Unknown Soldier, an explosive war drama, is the story of a platoon of ordinary Finnish soldiers fighting the Soviets in the Second World War. It is an adaptation of the iconic novel by Väinö Linna, who himself was such a soldier. The story evolves around individual men in the platoon, all very different from one another. The warm humour of The Unknown Soldier makes it all the more realistic, true and tragic. The Unknown Soldier is also a grippingly moving story of a small nation standing up to the overwhelming force of the Soviet Union. TOM OF FINLAND INTERNATIONAL SALES: PROTAGONIST PICTURES www.protagonistpictures.com

Tom of Finland is a beautiful and thrilling true story about a Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen and his journey to international success. In the film, Touko returns home after serving his country in World War II. But post-war Finland is a bleak and moralistic place where homosexuality is illegal, so Touko has to be furtive about his sexual encounters. To amuse himself and his friends, Touko starts to draw muscular, free and proud gay men who are uninhibited. These drawings are forbidden and dangerous in Finland, so they must be kept secret. Even his sister Kaija doesn’t know what he’s drawing. During the day, Touko leads a regular life working in an advertisement agency. He then falls in love with a dancer, Veli Mäkinen. The drawings lead Touko to Berlin and from there to Los Angeles, where his friends help his art become a success. His works, signed with Touko’s artist name ’Tom of Finland’, become widely popular and fan the flames of the gay movement. Tom of Finland’s art is timeless and world famous. How can one help one’s grandchild, or great-grandchild, fifty years from now? What do we pass on to those who come after us, for better or worse? And what difference can one person make in the world? These are the universal questions that occupy director John Webster in this cinematic letter to his great-grandchild, a girl called Dorit who will be born in the 2060’s, and who’s little yellow boots will walk on a very different shoreline to the one we knew today.Taking as its starting point a personal experience of loss that has been with John throughout his life, we are taken on an emotional and physical journey from Finland, across Russia to the coal mines of Siberia, to the Marshall Islands in the Pacific, and across the USA to New York. The story seamlessly weaves together past, present and future to create a beautiful, moving and hopeful documentary about the power each of us has to make a difference.

A small and stubborn Bulgarian village on the Turkish border has been resisting foreign invaders since the times of the Roman and Ottoman Empires. Now its electorate of 38 elderly Bulgarians is deciding on future of Europe. The Great Gate, as the village has been called for centuries due to its location, has found itself in the middle of a European crisis; at night, asylum seekers sneak passed the border, causing fear and unrest. Once again the sleepy and forgotten village has become the most important secret loophole of Europe. Ivan, the local postman, has a new political vision. He decides to run for mayor and revive the dying village by welcoming refugees. His opponents either want to close their eyes or close down the border and reintroduce communism. As the campaign continues, Ivan soon learns that, while good intentions are not enough, even the smallest deeds matter. THE WAGES OF WAR

95

The Wages of War is a creative documentary about the young men who were sent to fight for Finland, but later, as fathers, brought the war back home. This is the story told by their children. During the 1941-1944 war against the Soviet Union 15700 Finnish men were taken to military psychiatric wards. After the war the hospitals were closed and the deeply traumatized men returned to their families. Thousands of children were forced to listen to their fathers’ shocking wartime experiences. Many men could not bring back their good selves when the war was over. The progeny of these fierce fighters want to know the truth about the violence, shame and alcoholism of their fathers in order not to be destroyed by it themselves. The film is a journey to forgiveness and redemption.
