Producers The weaning at Hawks Herefords is done a little differently than most. “We wean the cows,” says Hawks. The calves are put back out in the pasture and the cows are locked up. “We started doing it in 2002 and you can’t believe how calm those calves are. They go out and graze and they hardly bawl at all,” says Hawks. “I remember how they used to bawl until they were hoarse while walking the fence.
