In honor of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of our beloved institution, Tilburg University organized the event so-called Night University. In other words, for who missed this great night, our campus has been opened until midnight. The big contrast of colored lights and the dark sky created a cosy atmosphere, giving a warm welcome to all the interested guests. As you might have seen on the posters- if you didn’t see them you may wanna have a check at the oculist because they were everywhere- the theme was named “back to the future’. This mysterious description gave the chance to many events to organize several workshops, lectures, exhibitions and other activities for the public. It was about how things will look in the future, how scientific progress will lead to social improvement, but also about the past. Besides the academic activities and exhibitions, many celebrities have been invited to entertain the students: TiU student and national football player Jacky Groenen was interviewed and Greg Shapiro’s impression of Donald Trump entertained the masses of spectators. Further, music in the central square of the campus seems to have received the attention of big part of the public. But now let’s go back to our pride of being an LAS student. As a matter of fact, most study associations collaborated on the different activities. Our study association Extra Muros took care of two events: the Poetry Open Mic event and the Roaring Twenties. The Creative Committee of EM organized simultaneously both events. With the initiative of the Academic Forum, the poetry event consisted of an open mic in which campus -poet Lotte and LAS’ academic English teacher Andrew Cartwright and led the evening. Also, guests such as Arthur Kok, Nathan de Groot and the Tilburg city poet Onias Landveld, the ex-city poet Martin Beversluis and the junior city poet Rozelijn van Gurp joined the evening with their delightful words. Some of the poems were in Dutch, others in English: nothing stopped the international students from 4

enjoying it, since the warmth of a bonfire and the company of music kept them interested and relaxed. The two half-an hour sessions lasted perfectly, since some of our LAS students spoke up with their own works. A bonfire, some random dudes dressed in 1920s style keeping the wood burning and a circle of people expressing their feelings through voice and music. Meanwhile, in D building, the room where the LAS students spend a lot of their ‘productive’ hours aged 90 years back in time. The beamer reproduced series of black and white photos while a background of the first jazz age was swinging in the ears of the visitors. Inside the common room, a bunch of gentlemen and ladies were finely dressed in their best weekend clothes, so that the visitors could feel welcomed in the Roaring Twenties.

Photos of how the city looked like back then kept the oldest and nostalgic guests locked on the couch, while the younger generations walked along the walls to look at the vanguard-style paintings made by our fellow students of the creative committee. ‘Are these for sale?’we heard an art expert asking. ‘Nah… talent is not for sale’- responded the LAS-er. Cubism, futurism, surrealism made the common room a great success, while the cookies and drinks incentivized the guests to stay in the room for longer than a minute. Extra Muros thanks all the LASstudents for helping and making it a great evening. Author: Freek Zwaan

The day she started to convert herself into a person who would change the future of Kumeron was the day she got her first present. And it was more than clear to all that this day changed her a lot. This day frightened each and every one of her close ones, even her. But Curia didn’t hesitate to embrace the feeling, as she knew she would spend the rest of her life with it. Curia was sitting in the park away from the kids who screamed as the ball was rolling on the playground. She was looking to the threes, shaking her feet which couldn’t reach the ground form the stone bench, and she was wondering why did the leaves fall? Was it indeed that they were keeping the warmth of the earth during winter, protecting the roots of the tree from freezing, as grandmother used to tell her? Or did they have other purpose or a purpose at all? Who was right – grandmother whose explanations were more like fairytales, was it father who claimed that the sole purpose of some things is simply to happen, or was it mother the one who was right telling young Curia that some things are only for the First Souls to know? “Curia! Come and play!” “In a second. I have to decide something!”, she replied without taking her gaze from the trees. The wind blew and dragged the leaves into a curious dance. Some felt from the tree as a colorful rain all around Curia. She tried to look at every single one, maybe like that she could understand in whose truth to believe in. “You look like a character in a story”, someone said from her left side. Curia turned to see the leaves fall and stuck on his fluffy hat and messy dark hair showing under it. “What do you mean?” “You know”, the boy shrugged his shoulders and came closer. “A girl sitting in a rain of leaves, looking at them, alone, wondering and… you know… ahm… being beautiful.” Curia tilted her head to one side. The boy turned red and scratched his forehead. “That is… you know, how it happens in the stories.” “Do you think I am beautiful?” Curia asked. The boy giggled and then in a moment turned serious. His face was becoming even more red, which was impressing, according to Curia. “You are… yes… ahm…” “Just because I wonder?”

“No, not only.” “Oh.”, Curia look down with disappointment. She didn’t see how the color from the boy’s face disappeared with the horrible thought that he might had offended her. “I guess wondering isn’t so good after all.” “Of course, it is! It is the most amazing thing! No, don’t get me wrong, there are other amazing things but wondering is amazing too, because it’s one of them…”, the boy stopped his mumbling and his shoulders felt. “I am leaving you alone now. Sorry.” And he turned around. “Why are you sorry?”, Curia stopped him with her question. “Because you felt embarrassed or be6

“How am I like a twenty-year-old man in a costume?”

“You are right, that doesn’t make sense…”, the boy seemed really troubled about the question. But he would forget about it after a while unlike Curia. She felt like that every day of her life. Wondering and not knowing. “Then, maybe we should do what this guy said… I don’t remember his name. But he is famous, I swear! He said everyone lives in his own world, but everyone can choose to change his world. Does that make sense? I don’t really understand it, but it’s an answer, right?”

“Oh, well, okay, not exactly like him. Read the book and you will understand what I mean… I hope.”, he murmured the last part looking with preoccupation at the book in the hands of the girl as if it could lead to something lethal. “He, the character, says… or I guess it is the author who says it… Ahm, someone says that nothing is what it appears to be. It appears that you and the character are completely different, but we may find out you actually have similarities.

“I… I don’t know. My mom says that moms know best for their kids. So, maybe for you your mom is right, and for me mine is.” “So, the truth depends on who your parents are?”, Curia lowered the book.

“Oh, yes. One of many.”, replied Curia.

Or like the leaf rain. Maybe it is something else than what it looks like. Weren’t you wondering exactly that?” “Yes, kind of.” Curia fondled the old paper of the book. She then closed it and handed it back to

Let’s go!”, she closed the book and jumped from the bench. “Now is the time! Come on!” The boy laughed and joined her on the ground. “Oh, this is yours.”, she handed him the book, a little saddened. He smiled again. “You can keep as a gift.” “A gift?”, Curia looked it as if it was the most precious thing she ever held. And it might as well was. This was the first time she was given and not denuded something for wondering. The book was hers to keep forever. A

s of lately I have been going through an absolute mess. My life turnt into a total shitshow (excuse my language). So I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and devised a plan to get my life back together. The sorrow must end. As I have certain academic personality traits I’ve first decided to gather data. This went from asking around, to looking at academic sources. I will report on my findings with the hope that somewhere someone will read this and decides to get their life in order as well.

Step 1: Exercise

Step 4: Prepare your own dinner

Several studies have reported a positive correlation between mental health and exercise (F. Penedo, 2005). Exercise can be a good start to get your shit back together. It will give you energy and boost your serotonin, which is exactly what you need right now.

If you are like me, you enjoy the simplicity of ordering food and buying microwave meals. However, these meals are often unhealthy and not custom made for you. Find out which nutrients you should avoid and which ones you want to increase in your diet and include them in your own home made meals. Also, these meals are often delicious and it can certainly be fun and rewarding to prepare something of your own.

Step 2: Make your bed every morning Making your bed is an action that requires about 20 seconds of your time, however can have a great influence on the rest of your day. This minimal task immediately makes your room look like a healthier and cleaner environment which might stimulate you to clean up. Furthermore, starting your day off by completing a minor task will lead to the completion of multiple tasks during the day according to Admiral William McRaven,

Step 5: Treat yourself Do not be too hard on yourself. Do not forget that you do matter and show yourself that you do. Treat yourself to a small something that you really like. My guilty pleasure is Pokemon cards, find your own and reward your good behaviour!

Step 3: Create a clean environment

Step 6: People

Having a clean and tidy environment can boost your mental health. It can make you feel as if you have your life more in order. Furthermore, completing this chore will feel like an absolute achievement. To make this easier you might want to become aware of what activities cauise your environment to be messy.

Make people aware of your situation. Try to share and they will take your needs into consideration. You are not being needy, you are being reasonable. You matter and others will think so too. Let your friends into your situation Step 7: Relaxation Exercises Search for relaxation exercises such as mindulness or breathing exercises. These things actually help you relax.

What will this winter bring you? Will you find fortune, love or wisdom? Who will cross your path and what are the horrors still awaiting you? Find out now based on your birthmonth! This month Taurus and Virgo are the ultimate winners of the faith-game! Congratulations on your win.

Your fridge will be filled with delight. Do not stay away from the sounds of help. However, stay away from books. Trust me.

Do not take risks. Stay inside and do not try to be anything you are not. Be real. You might be boring, but you will survive.

Do not take things for granted. You might want to be wary of everything you read and that gets handed to you.

Call your parents. They have been begging you for a while now. They actually paid me to write this so that you’ll call. Please call them.

You are going to suffer a great loss soon. You might want to give extra care to everything and everyone you love.

The time is ripe to do those things you’ve always wanted to do but were to afraid to. I mean you still won’t do them but the time is ripe.

The cops will not find you. Your actions will go without punishment once again. Rob that bank, but be sure to run. The cops wont find you but you will be amazed by the power of bystanders. The common folk will suriprise you in many ways in the upcoming months. However, stay away from family. They might give you too much love too handle. Also, true love will find your heart. This is the best time of your life.

The Extra You should become more active. Try participating in assocations. For example, why not try to help out at your study association? They could always use the help. Whatever you do, make sure you actually do your best and put in some energy. Really though, help out at that study association, they could use your help. And do not be a parasite when you help out. Actually do things. Please? Thanks.

Remember that one person you’ve hated for a while now? That person is going to do some stuff that you’ll hate them even more for. I know, I didn’t expect it to be possible either. If you have the chance you should probably punch them. Unless you are anti-violence, in that case just make their life into a living hell. You antiviolence people really know how to torture people.

Remember all those responsibilities? Shove them aside. Now is the time to focus on yourself. Those responsibilities will bite you in the ass at a later point. Now you just do you. I mean if they’ll be a burden anyhow, why not let it be a burden in the future? You might die next week, why would you waste your time on all those stupid things you dont like? Procrastinate because you’ll never know how long you have left (but I do).

Are you ready to party? Because you will have the parties of a lifetime in the entire upcoming year. But only if one condition is met. You will have to go to the Extra Muros parties. It is weird how specific the stars can be with their demands, but hey do not shoot the messenger. Go to the parties, have some fun. As long as you do so, every party will be amaze-balls. Or else the stars have lied to you and you should never trust space again.

You have a 100% chance of becoming rich during the upcoming months. Either you’ll become a millionaire or you’ll be blessed with being rich in something other than wealth. Either way, you’ll be rich. Quit your job, give your boss the finger and just live life, man! You are rich! It might be rich with wisdom though. You might want to be careful, you rich bastard. By the way, can I borrow some bucks? You’ll be rich so it wont matter anyhow.

A Thousand Times or More

If wolves came hunting for your flesh

I pray to God and all above

You'd have my shield and sword

That life does not keep score

Standing tall in every clash

But I will pay my dues with love

A thousand times or more

A thousand times or more

If age rendered it without use

I could romanticize it many ways

As I lay empty on your floor

And you might like it too

Whatever we'd had I'd still induce

But all I really want to say

A thousand times or more

You saved me on a lonely day And I enjoyed my time with you

Your being is my fate it seems Casually strolling through the door

If I could live a thousand lives

A vision from those buried dreams

Starting from the days of yore

That still in secrecy gleams

I'd come back to you a thousand times

Now your alacrity I implore

A thousand times or more

Words don't sound as they are meant to Where they always have before But upon those lese lines I sing to you A thousand times or more
