A Message from the Head of School

Tony Wagner, author of the book Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World, which our entire faculty read last summer, has said, “The Global Achievement Gap is the gap between what even our best schools are teaching and testing, versus the skills all students will need for careers, continuous learning and citizenship in the 21st century.” Last year, we laid the groundwork and developed the implementation plan for 21st Century Walker’s, our initiative to advance Walker’s curriculum. Our goal is to ensure we continue to prepare our students with the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. We are fortunate to live and learn in a place that embraces innovation, and where advancing girls’ education, in particular, is a mission championed and celebrated by our entire community. In contrast, it is heart wrenching to read about the lengths to which certain cultures and regimes will go in order to deny girls access to education. Shortly before we celebrated the commencement of the 62 extraordinary young women of the Class of 2014 last June, we mourned together for the 300 Nigerian girls who were kidnapped from their school. In my Charge to the Class, I encouraged them to remember their Nigerian sisters and to use their education in pursuit of equality and inclusion for all. Our students’ lives are rich with examples of the ways in which they share the privilege of their education with others. Last year, 11 students presented Eve Ensler’s “Emotional Creature,” a provocative and moving play about the lives of girls around the world, to audiences in Hartford and at Wilbraham and Monson Academy. Several students gave a young girl with cancer a new bedroom through the Art from the Heart program; Student Body President Lizzie Turner ’14 created “Larger Than Life,” a self-esteem building program that she and several of her peers presented to girls from Grace Academy Middle School in Hartford; during spring break, students participated in service programs with Habitat for Humanity in Texas, and Mariposa DR in the Dominican Republic; and Walker’s students hosted a co-ed workshop to discuss “Violent Masculinity in the Media” and what students can do to promote healthier messages. These are just a few examples and I share them as concrete reminders that when you give to Walker’s, as you did in extraordinary ways last year, you help to extend the countless ripples that a Walker’s education — and Walker’s girls — can have on the world. Thanks to you, we exceeded our 2013-2014 Fund for Walker’s goal, and as of June 30th, we’re past the halfway mark to meeting our $50 million Campaign goal. These are tremendous accomplishments. As Trustees, parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, students, grandparents, and friends, each of you plays a critical role in helping our School to thrive. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks for participating in the mission of The Ethel Walker School.

We are fortunate to live and learn in a place that embraces innovation, and where advancing girls’ education, in particular, is a mission championed and celebrated by our entire community.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth C. Speers P’16 Head of School

A Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

SOURCES AND APPLICATIONS OF FUNDS — 2013-2014

The 2013-2014 school year began with the opening of the new dormitory, a beautiful addition to the residential end of campus and a symbol of the continued progress of Walker’s Centennial Vision. Other successes during the year included strong attendance at Family Weekend, Grandparents Day, and our most successful Admissions Revisit Day ever. We also held our inaugural Former Trustees event in New York City, to celebrate the Trustees whose contributions have paved the way for Walker’s current success. Reunion Weekend was a lovely and lively gathering of alumnae from many decades. It is inspiring to see such engagement across the community. During the year, notable guests came to campus to address the Walker’s community, including National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) President John Chubb, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy, former Executive Director of Connecticut’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women Theresa Younger, and Edna Adan, founder of the Edna Adan University Hospital in Somaliland, East Africa. It is always a pleasure to hear that our visitors are as impressed with Walker’s as we are with them! Throughout the spring, Bessie and her capable team introduced the framework and implementation plan for 21st Century Walker’s to Trustees, alumnae, parents, and students. We can all take pride in Walker’s innovative curricular advancements, which we will hear more about this year. Last June, 62 students graduated from Walker’s, ready to take on the world with their powerful combination of knowledge and know-how. We are proud that many of these young women are attending some of the country’s finest institutions of higher learning, including Harvard College, Carnegie Mellon University, and Emory University. Of course, one of our greatest accomplishments was exceeding the 2013-2014 Fund for Walker’s goal of $1.7 million. I am continually impressed by your generosity, and Bessie and the Board share my gratitude that you remain committed to Walker’s and advancing girls’ education. The Board has approved our plans for the Centennial Center, including the groundbreaking, which is planned for the coming academic year, once our fundraising goals have been achieved. With more than $30 million raised toward our $50 million Campaign goal before June 30, 2014, we are well on our way. Whether looking back at the year just passed, or ahead to the year before us, I am energized by all we have accomplished, and excited by all I know we will continue to do together. Thank you for your continued support.

Annual Giving Report | 2013–2014

T

hanks to your loyalty and generosity, I am delighted to share impressive results for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Walker’s had another record-breaking year, exceeding our $1.7 million Fund for Walker’s goal — the highest in the School’s history to date — and raising $1,735,380. Our Trustees, alumnae, parents, friends, grandparents, faculty, staff, and students answered multiple appeals and rose to several challenges throughout the year. I am grateful for all you accomplished, and thank you for your support! Head of School Bessie Speers P’16, Board Chair Stuart Bell, and Campaign Chair Sarah Colley ’75, along with our Trustees, have once again proved to be an exceptional team. To date, we have raised more than $30 million toward our $50 million Campaign goal. And in total, Walker’s raised a total of $3.5 million through June 30. Walker’s S&P rating was upgraded to BBB in July, based upon

the School’s solid financial performance over the last several years. External parties, such as ratings agencies and investors, often want to understand constituency engagement when evaluating the School’s financial strength. I am proud to share Walker’s participation, which is outlined below, and look forward to continuing to strengthen these numbers in the year ahead. With more than a full year under my belt, I’m more impressed than ever by our talented and dedicated community — including our leadership and exceptional faculty, to our tireless Development and External Affairs team, and of course, all of you. Walker’s is the place to be. I can’t think of a more exciting time to be at The Ethel Walker School, looking ahead to another year of growth and success. On behalf of all of us, thank you for all you do to keep Walker’s strong. Sincerely,

Thom Greenlaw COO and Assistant Head for Strategic Initiatives

Independent schools have been successfully educating the whole child and preparing students for college for hundreds of years. It’s rooted in our traditions, in our Latin motto, in our academics, arts, and athletic programs. It permeates every aspect of our community. Tradition is priceless, but it must be balanced with forward momentum and curricular evolution in order for schools to remain relevant and competitive.

2013-2014 Reunion Awards THE ELIZABETH NASH MUENCH ’55 TRAY

THE GATES FAMILY BOWL

The Gates Family Bowl is awarded to the Reunion class contributing $100,000 or more to the Fund for Walker’s. Congratulations to both the Class of 1944 and the Class of 1969 for contributing $108,850 and $162,770 respectively this year in honor of their Reunions. We would like to recognize the Class of 1944 Reunion volunteers Marian Morton Brown and Sally Skinner Hart and the Class of 1969 Reunion volunteers Ann Watson Bresnahan, Gillian Reighley Christensen, Katherine Murphy Ingle, Cate Lord, and Lisa Pagliaro Selz.

The Elizabeth Nash Muench ’55 Tray is awarded annually to the Reunion class that has achieved the highest level of participation in the Walker’s Fund. The tray was given by Letitia McClure Potter ’55 in 1994 in honor of her friend and classmate, Liz, who has served Walker’s in so many capacities over the years. Congratulations to the Reunion Class of 1949 with 95 percent participation for earning the honor of being awarded the tray this year. For 1949, celebrating her 55th Reunion, we thank Marie Connors Roberts.

THE LONG DISTANCE AWARD

The Long Distance Award is presented each year to the alumna who, based on her home address, traveled the longest distance to attend Reunion Weekend. The Long Distance Award this year went to Fina Johnson, Class of 1984, who traveled from Nassau, Bahamas.

THE SUNDIAL BOWL

The Sundial Bowl is awarded each year to the class with the largest percentage of classmates registered for Reunion Weekend. This year, nearly 50 percent of the graduates from the Class of 2009 returned to celebrate their 5th Reunion and thus were awarded The Sundial Bowl. Many thanks for the dedication and hard work of the Reunion Committee: Rebecca J. Castellani, Devin E. Costa, Lisa Howard-Sorrell, Katherine E. Molloy, Alanah L. Percy, Katherine E. Reid, Cheryl A. Tourigny, and Molly E. Turro.

“I was totally unprepared for Walker’s, but it was there that I was taught how to tap into my potential. It has served me very well throughout life. So many people do not know failure, and I was shocked to be told I was not succeeding. When I started at Walker’s, I was #49 out of 50 students in my class. Due to the mentoring of my teachers, especially Mary Nelson, who began as my nemesis, and old fashioned hard work, I ended up as #1 in my class. Mary Nelson became my friend and muse. For this reason, in my bucket list of organizations that I give back to, Walker’s is definitely my priority. I see the direction Walker’s is taking in its curriculum and commitment to a global education, and I wholeheartedly support the School.” JEAN MOORE EDWARDS ’64

“I give and will continue to give to the school I love so well because I would like students of Walker’s to enjoy it as much as I did. The Ethel Walker School gave me some of the best experiences and memories of my life and I would like today’s students to find their own happy memories. Wherever the money goes, whether it is to help pay great teachers, better the facilities, or travel for sporting events, my only wish is that students love attending Walker’s as much as I did.”

The girls heard that some of the older speakers needed to be replaced, and decided to meet that need for Walker’s. The new speakers are high tech, portable and can be used for all kinds of events including games, Dogswood Day, Commencement, and Reunion Weekend.

The Ethel Walker Heritage Society The Ethel Walker School has been the proud recipient of bequests from many generous alumnae, parents and friends over the years. In today’s uncertain economy, some donors feel the need to hang onto their assets during their lifetime, but are happy to make an impact on The Ethel Walker School through their estate. Ways to remember Walker’s through your estate plans: • Designate a percentage of your estate, or a particular stock, bond, or mutual fund portfolio • Bequeath a primary or second home • Make Walker’s the beneficiary of your IRA or pension plan • Remember Walker’s through a charitable remainder or lead trust • After providing for family and friends, designate Walker’s as the residuary beneficiary of your charitable trust or estate • Name Walker’s as a contingent beneficiary of an IRA or trust, in the event that certain beneficiaries predecease the donor

“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” ~ Winston Churchill

What is the Heritage Society? The Heritage Society membership allows The Ethel Walker School to honor individuals who have provided for the School through a current planned gift, or who have named Walker’s as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Members may request anonymity.

If you would like to receive additional information regarding: • Including The Ethel Walker School in your Estate Plan • Bequest Intention Acknowledgment Form • Outside Charitable Trust Confirmation Form • Sample bequest language

What is a Bequest Intention versus a Matured Bequest? When a donor has included Walker’s in a will or estate plan during her lifetime this is considered a “bequest intention.” When the donor passes away and The Ethel Walker School receives the bequest from the donor’s estate it is a “matured bequest.”

Please contact: Marion Paterson P’14, ’17 Director of Development The Ethel Walker School 230 Bushy Hill Road Simsbury, CT 06070 Phone: 860-408-4257 Email: mpaterson@ethelwalker.org

How does a donor document their bequest intention? In order to be a member of The Ethel Walker Heritage Society we ask that the donor contact Walker’s to advise us of their intention. We then encourage the donor to complete our confidential Bequest Intention Acknowledgement Form. (If the donor feels comfortable putting a conservative dollar figure on the form, it may be “counted” in our Centennial Campaign.)
