Surprise and

Welcome Back!

Nearly ten years have passed since Elms Magazine was last published. I cannot attest to all the reasons why the decision was made to halt printing. What I do know is this – Our Lady of the Elms community longs for information about the School today. Whether that’s up-to-date news about our students and faculty, reports on the successes of our amazing alums or updates from the Akron Motherhouse, the demand for information is great and far reaching. Surviving a pandemic may be reason enough to resume publication. The past 20 months inspire all of us to ask the question – why? Why do we do what we do? In late spring 2020, as we were doing everything possible to provide an Elms education from a distance, a colleague observed the following: If your organization was relevant before the pandemic, it will be relevant when it ends. I remember wondering who would be measuring? Then I began gathering data. Our Lady of the Elms School is the last Dominican School left in the Diocese of Cleveland. It also is the last faith-based, all-girls’ school, Grades 1 - 12, in the State. What happens every day at the Elms cannot be replicated anywhere else in Ohio – our mission is to …educate girls and young women to live their lives boldly with purpose, confidence, kindness, resilience, justice and faith. In September, Bishop Edward Malesic of the Cleveland Diocese offered Mass at the Elms. On a beautiful summer-like day on the lawn in front of the Motherhouse, he spoke to the students about the Mission of the Elms. In sharing his thoughts, he talked about the power of faith; how our expectations of our students to live bold and purposeful lives, to be confident, practice kindness and be fair and resilient would all be for naught if we didn’t have our faith. He recognized the power of living one’s faith – not living one faith.

President Farquhar Jones and Elmer masking up with the Elms community.

And so we share with you today a report on the 2020-2021 school year. It will forever be known as the year of COVID. For the Elms, we can say the following: • We offered in-person learning throughout the entire year, as we believe that’s how girls learn best. • We kept everyone safe; there were no outbreaks of COVID at the Elms. Our students experienced no loss of learning and continue to test at or above grade level. • The impact of our work has been farreaching in that enrollment for this school year has increased by 24%. • Fundraising last year met – and exceeded – its $700,000 goal. The 2020-2021 Honor Roll of Donors shares specific information and extends appreciation to all. • It is thanks to our community that we move closer to our centennial celebration in 2023 leading from a position of strength. Thank you for reading and caring about Our Lady of the Elms School. Join us in our renewed commitment to sharing good news from West Akron, Ohio. Blessings,

Deborah Farquhar Jones President

n Saturday, June 5, Our Lady of the Elms Class of 2021 celebrated graduation at St. Sebastian Church. During her commencement address, Lacy Nicholas, the valedictorian and student speaker, said, “What I want to talk about today: how much we’ve all changed. Last spring when we went home, we took for granted that we would see each other and our families after an Bernadette Brocsius extended spring break. While we may have thought we were mature back then, we weren’t. But I truly believe that the last year has aged us more than we ever expected it to.” The Class of 2021 was quick to adapt to a very different college search process. They embraced virtual tours and Zoom meetings. When class president, Bernadette Broscius, addressed the seniors she added, “It’s been a path paved with four years of friendship, laughter, tears, frustration, and joy... This year has shown us that anything is possible and everything can change at a moment’s notice.”

team of Ninth Graders and Seniors are gathered together on an early September afternoon for a lively discussion with Sr. Maura as they search to find the history of the Italian Mother Mary that sits behind glass in the corner of the commons. With the initial nuggets of information they have gleaned, they move on to start a deep dive into the Elms archives for more. Meanwhile, another group made up of Eleventh and Eighth Graders is curious about the life of the late Sr. Evangeline, a talented artist whose sculptures dot the Elms campus. A third team of students has decided they want to understand the history of the ballet studio, how it came to be and the background of the alumna, Suzanne Ames Landry ’49, whose name graces the studio’s walls. And yet another team of girls is already in investigative mode, exploring the Elms history of athletics and determined to uncover the facts (a football team in the late 1930s, really?). These groups represent the entire student body from Grades Six through Twelve who are a part of an innovative research project propelling 21st century students backwards through the years, beginning with the school’s 1923 formation and leading up to its centennial celebration on October 14, 2023. One of the primary outcomes of their project will be a walking tour of the Elms campus that uses augmented reality to create an historical backdrop at specific points along the way.

This initiative is a powerful example of “project-based learning (PBL).” PBL is an interdisciplinary learning process using hands-on, student-driven and collaborative work. Students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. The first 100 years in the school’s history present the perfect opportunity for Elms students to develop a deeper understanding of the strong connections to the past, not only with today, but with the future. Mathematics teacher Elaine Dria, science teacher Holly Stoneberg and history teachers Walt Jacoby and Adam Anzelc are acting as faculty guides for the project. As Ms. Dria explained, “I hope the students will learn the roots of our school and some of the reasons behind

our traditions, so they can create a lasting living history that others can add to and enjoy either online or in person.” An exciting aspect of the project is a ground-breaking collaboration with an interdisciplinary team from Kent State University. Over the course of the project, students will be exposed to different technologies and tools and will design and develop digital experiences supporting the Centennial Project. KSU professors Dr. Rick Ferdig and Dr. Enrico Gandolfi, along with graduate students in their capstone program, have already provided a prototype of two historical tour “hotspots” for the Elms teachers to learn and share as an example for the students. One of the major results will be the on-campus augmented walking tour highlighting points of interest and

There also will be a rotating digital gallery of notable alumnae to showcase the strong women formed, in part, by their Elms experience. “Our hope is to see students using technology to embrace and connect to the vision and history of this wonderful school,” said Dr. Gandolfi. “Technology can make students active contributors in their educational ecosystem, and by exploring different innovations, students will become leading actors in celebrating Our Lady of the Elms School and

GAR’s Consulting Educator Initiative Grants Program Manager Lucille Esposito was enthusiastic about highlighting the connections of the past to the present. “Listening to the stories of all the sacrifices that the Dominican Sisters made 100 years ago to bring quality education to young women, I know those dedicated religious would be so proud of the young women who attend the Elms today,” she said.

Gloria A. Clausen passed away February 7, 1995. Born in Milwaukee, WI, and moved to Florida in 1950, she started her career as a pilot with Tursair Aviation in 1958, and went on to become director at Tursair Fueling thru 1995. Girls’ schools are leading the way in STEM education for women in the world.

Girls’ schools are places where girls take center stage. Students at girls’ schools are inspired to become informed, engaged global citizens with courage, confidence and empathy.

Girls’ schools prepare young women to rise to the highest levels of leadership.

Our Lady of the Elms School begins its 98th academic year having never strayed from the mission: to educate girls and young women to live their lives boldly with purpose, confidence, kindness, resilience, justice and faith. Shared community values create a unique educational experience that is the Elms. Will you consider your gift to the School today? Your gift impacts her today, and all of our tomorrows.
