DWIGHT SCHOOL

Welcome Dwight is an internationally renowned educator of the next generation of global leaders — one student at a time. We’re dedicated to crafting a personalized journey for every student based on individual interests and passions. We call this igniting the “spark of genius” in every child. Personalized learning, together with community and global vision, are the three pillars upon which a Dwight worldclass education rests. At the core of Dwight is our steadfast commitment to putting students first. Our inspiring faculty — master teachers — encourage students to believe in their own talents, follow their hearts, and take intellectual risks through the academically vigorous International Baccalaureate. The academic breadth and depth of the IB are simply unparalleled, which is why it is recognized worldwide as the “gold standard” in pre-university preparation. No other curriculum fits better with our vision of educating thoughtful, caring, critical thinkers and innovative global leaders. We invite you to read on to learn more about what makes the Dwight experience so special.

OUR ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY

Breaking Ground in Education for More Than 145 Years Dwight’s legacy of personalized learning dates back to 1872. We’re proud of our long and rich history as a premier independent school, landmark New York City educational institution, and pioneering global network of schools. From the very beginning, Dwight was designed to prepare graduates for admission to the Ivy League, especially to Harvard and Yale; our namesake is Yale’s twelfth President, Timothy Dwight V. Since that time, our visionary leaders have transformed the educational landscape, while our distinguished alumni have left their mark on our world. As a pioneer in global education, Dwight was the first independent school in the U.S. to establish an international campus in London in 1972, the first in New York City to offer the IB Primary Years Program, and the first in the Americas to offer the comprehensive IB curriculum from preschool to grade 12. As a frontier IB World School, Dwight will continue to blaze a trail in 21st-century education.

PERSONALIZED LEARNING

Dwight Students Carve Their Own Paths No two students are alike — and no two student journeys at Dwight are the same. Dedicated to igniting the spark of genius in every child, we customize an educational path for every student based on individual interests and talents. With one of the lowest student-teacher ratios among New York City independent schools, Dwight faculty work one-on-one with students to discover and nurture their passions, empowering students to believe in themselves and to take risks. The IB curriculum and its focus on studentdriven inquiry provides numerous opportunities for students to delve deeper into topics and subjects that they’re interested in. Students also follow their own paths and passions outside the classroom through an extensive array of programs and activities, including Spark Tank — Dwight’s incubator designed to foster entrepreneurial, innovation, and leadership skills.

COMMUNITY

A Special Place, a Family Atmosphere Dwight is dedicated to fostering a warm, welcoming, and inspiring community, which embraces diversity and mutual respect to help build a better world. Leadership through service is woven into nearly every aspect of a Dwight education. Through academic, civic, team, and individual exploration, students develop valuable leadership skills and a foundation to become global leaders. Dwight also has a tradition of modeling service as an institution. Dwight’s innovative partnership with a local New York City housing community to create the Dwight School Athletic Center in East Harlem exemplifies these efforts. Mentorship programs like the Lower School Reading Buddy Project create bonds between older and younger students, and long-standing school traditions further link members of Dwight’s special community.

Being part of a global network affords students numerous benefits and countless opportunities to expand their worldview. Dwight students participate in exchange programs; curricular and creative collaborations, including our annual global Carnegie Hall concert; online programs; international athletic competitions; and global leadership conferences. The world is literally at their feet — and we couldn’t be more delighted to offer our students an international passport.

PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

The Foundation for Lifelong Learning We welcome our littlest learners to a warm and nurturing environment in which to enjoy their first classroom experiences. Dwight preschool and kindergarten students explore continually inside and outside the classroom. As they’re introduced to the International Baccalaureate’s dynamic Primary Years Program, they learn through play, discovery, and inquiry. Tapping into their growing curiosity, our faculty members take a holistic approach that nurtures the cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being of each child. Among the countless new things students begin learning during these exciting early years are other languages: Spanish is introduced in the preschool 2s and instruction in Mandarin begins in Pre-kindergarten.

Our students are at the center of a highly interactive, innovative, and inquiry-based Primary Years Program curriculum. We teach to the “head and heart of each child, and we delight in working with every student on his or her personalized journey. A highlight each year is the much anticipated exchange program with Dwight School London, in which fifth graders take their first steps abroad on the road to becoming global leaders.

In grades 11 and 12, they dive deeper into the academically vigorous IB curriculum through the Diploma Program, which includes higher-level classes such as Theory

of Knowledge; and projects such as the extended essay, which is on par with college-level work. As they prepare to take the next step in their educational journeys beyond Dwight, seniors leave an indelible mark on our community through their leadership, community service, and action. Each year, as we celebrate their milestone graduation at the beautiful Metropolitan Museum of Art, we bid them farewell before they move on to the finest colleges and universities in the world.
