Letter from the Vice Chancellor

Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Board Chair Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, It is a privilege to serve as Chair of The Dwight School Foundation, and it was particularly meaningful this year when our community gathered in record numbers to celebrate Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s milestone 50th anniversary in education. We are extremely fortunate to have unprecedented continuity of leadership under Chancellor Spahn, whose commitment to cutting-edge education stands out along with his record of tenure. Susan Kessler

This year was made even more memorable by your unmatched level of support. We are most grateful for your time, energy, and resources that help to enhance the lives of students and teachers every day. Thanks to your generous Annual Fund contributions, the Foundation provided an unprecedented $1.5 million in student financial aid and 155 professional development grants to faculty who bring cutting-edge teaching strategies back to the classroom to benefit your children. In 2017-18, the Foundation also funded experts-in-residence, A-List prep, and Frontier Teacher training programs. The latter, which drew 33 participants, equips teachers with the same skills and methods used by start-ups, innovators, and entrepreneurs. With your support, the Foundation also continued to provide feedback, mentorship, and innovation grants for students pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams in Spark Tank. This included five $2,500 college scholarships for those who reached the launch stage. In total, 41 students presented projects and all the participants continued to impress us with their ingenuity. Dave Lindsey (David ’18, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21), Founding Chair of the Spark Tank Committee, deserves special recognition for his inspired leadership and personal commitment to the program. We thank Dave and his Committee members for nurturing students’ dreams and putting our incubator on the map. The Spring Benefit honoring Chancellor Spahn was a true highlight of the year. The evening brought together 600 members of the Dwight family who shared in the festivities. That evening, we launched an exciting new initiative to integrate the

incubator skills of Spark Tank into the IB curriculum, so that all our students can develop entrepreneurial skills that are so important in our fast-changing world. The Benefit netted over $500,000, which set a new record. We owe this great success to the dedication of our Spring Benefit Committee, co-chaired by Hayley Foster (Jared ’18) and Jessica Lindsey (David ’18, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21), and to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly over many months in advance. We thank them and all Foundation volunteers who helped this year: The Board of Trustees; the Annual Fund Committee co-chaired by Kim Saperstein ’92 (Aaron ’17, Benno ’19, Lexi ’21 Colodne) and Julie Stratopoulos (Ava ’25, Kira ’27); the Senior Gift Committee, co-chaired by Alex Gendzier (Gabriel Gendzier-Imperiali ’18) and Jessica Lindsey (David ’18, Maggie ’19, JackieRay ’21); the Alumni Council, chaired by Peter Timmins ’90; and the Parents Association, headed by Meridith Hill, grades 1-12 (Tabitha ’24, Cooper ’27, Austin ’27) and Laura Charecky, 2s-K (Alex ’27, Evie ’30). Dwight is truly a special school where everyone benefits from Chancellor Spahn’s lifelong commitment to igniting the spark of genius in every child. Together with the extraordinary leadership of Vice Chancellor Blake Spahn and Head of School Dianne Drew, graduates of Dwight School are prepared for the future in the best way possible. On behalf of the entire Board, I deeply and wholeheartedly thank you for your continued support. Most sincerely, Susan Kessler (Stephen ’10, William ’14) Board Chair, The Dwight School Foundation

Letter from the Chancellor and Head of School are integrating Spark Tank methodologies into the curriculum in every grade so that every student will graduate as a skilled transformational thinker. We are also preparing faculty to teach entrepreneurial skills alongside our rich IB curriculum through the Frontier Teacher training program, bringing a new level of excitement for learning that is truly inspirational. We are proud that Dwight is on the forefront and that Spark Tank continues to draw new students as well as media attention. Spark Tank has provided our young entrepreneurs with invaluable incubator experience and a great competitive advantage. This year was record-breaking for the Foundation — and for our community — which came together in support of the Foundation’s mission through the Annual Fund, Spring Benefit, and capital projects as never before. While we look back on this exceptional year in the pages that follow, we also look to the future with great enthusiasm. As our campus expands into 21 West 88st Street beginning this fall and our innovative programs extend to every classroom, our students will have the tools and skills needed to solve global problems, follow their dreams, and be successful in whatever path they pursue. Thank you for supporting the Foundation generously. Together, we are ushering in a new age of educational enlightenment at Dwight. Warm regards,

Faculty Professional Development

The Dwight School Foundation fosters learning across campus through faculty professional development and this year, we are proud to have awarded 155 grants to teachers to pursue the following: Grant Category

The Annual Fund and Spring Benefit are the primary sources of these grants, both of which raised amounts that exceeded totals in previous years. Through this robust level of support, teachers brought many insights and the latest thinking back to the classroom to share with colleagues and directly benefit Dwight students.

12

After attending an IB Workshop on Approaches to Learning Skills, I gained information that I can now implement to help strengthen our IB continuum — new ways to explicitly teach thinking, communication, social, self-management, and research skills — essential life skills, which we can’t just assume that students have. The workshop, which provided ways to thoughtfully plan for teaching and assessment, offered new information about how to scaffold these skills for students of different ages. …. I strongly believe that we never stop learning. – Shelby Levin, Associate Head of Middle School and MYP Coordinator

13

Financial Aid

Thanks to The Dwight School Foundation, more gifted and talented students benefited from financial aid in 2017-18 than at any other time in the Foundation’s 49year history. A total of $1.5 million was awarded in scholarships, enabling a record number of students to ignite their spark of genius and receive a world-class Dwight education. The funds raised through the Annual Fund and Spring Benefit made this possible.

My scholarship to Dwight has changed my life in more ways that I would ever be able to articulate, eloquently or otherwise, in this [Spring Benefit] speech tonight. Instead, I simply ask that my sheer presence here, that the gratitude I’m expressing, and the Dwight experience that I represent, stand as a testament to all that can be accomplished, to all that is regularly accomplished through the donations and the cooperation of the Dwight School community, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators alike. – Jada Morgan ’18, Valedictorian and Student Council Co-President

Carnegie Hall

This year’s global Carnegie Hall concert was extraordinary! It was held for the first time in the iconic Stern Auditorium and marked our student celebration of Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s 50th anniversary. Over 240 performers from across Dwight’s network of campuses came together with families, faculty, staff, and alumni to pay tribute to the man who made that evening — and so many other special moments — possible for generations of Dwight students. The five-tier, 2,800-seat concert hall was sold out and filled with the sounds of music from around the world augmented by the projection of celestial images reflecting the evening’s theme: “A Sky Full of Music.” Additionally, 83 members of Dwight’s adult community choir, which was formed for the occasion, shared the stage, making the concert the largest performance in our history.

Tommaso Cerase ’26 Scholarship

Our community suffered a devastating loss when fourthgrader Tommaso Cerase passed away following a tragic accident at the beginning of the school year. Supporting Tommy’s family was our first priority; and as friends, students, faculty, and staff came together to grieve, we also wanted to keep Tommy’s memory alive with a scholarship in his name. All 2017-18 Annual Fund gifts from grade four families supported this scholarship, and one family generously offered to match the funds raised. Tommy loved being a Dwight student; giving another child the opportunity to attend our School brought some comfort to our community and to the Cerase family.

#GivingTuesday The Dwight community showed its support for The Dwight School Foundation on #GivingTuesday, an annual global day of giving fueled by the power of social media on November 28, 2017. Coming after Thanksgiving and the two popular days of shopping that follow, Giving Tuesday is often seen as the beginning of holiday and end-of-year charitable giving. All funds raised on the day went to the Annual Fund in support of student financial aid, faculty professional development, and Spark Tank innovation grants.

With Dwight School’s investment in new and renovated spaces, including the exciting addition of 21 West 88th Street, The Dwight School Foundation is partnering with the School to support initiatives that will advance learning across campus through the Spark 21 Campaign for Dwight.

We are deeply indebted to the following families for their capital gifts. These generous gifts are vital to the Foundation’s investments and expand opportunities for all Dwight students. Anonymous Maxim Barskiy and Elena Barskaya Elizabeth Callaway and Robert Carey Daniel and Kat Grollo Michael Kalnick Leonard A. Lauder and William P. Spurred by the success of Spark Tank in equipping participants with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in our rapidly changing world, Dwight is embarking on a path to ensure that all students reap the same benefits by integrating Spark Tank methodologies into Dwight’s established IB curriculum. Realizing this vision requires an investment in Dwight’s people and programs over a five-year period, the campaign has already begun to fund over $700,000 in grants in five areas, ushering in a new educational era at Dwight. Frontier Teacher Training: This exciting new professional development initiative is designed to equip faculty with the skills, tools, and frameworks used by startups, innovators, and entrepreneurs so that they can

teach students the same skills, preparing them for success in the rapidly changing workplace. We launched a pilot training program this year in which 33 teachers participated in workshops led by entrepreneurs in the start-up space. They undertook 50 hours of intensive training and developed their own ideas through the designthinking cycle. Through hands-on experiences with tangible classroom applications, faculty were able to begin integrating innovation methodologies in their teaching right away. State-of-the-art Equipment: The Foundation purchased two telescopes for science classrooms, which were also used for Dwight’s annual Star Party this spring; and tech equipment for students to create virtual reality projects. Experts-in-Residence: Over the course of the year, eight educational professionals shared their insights and expertise, which faculty translated into their work with students in the classroom. A-List Prep: The Foundation supported the development of a new in-house program in conjunction with A-List for skill building and college test preparation to help students achieve high levels of success on the ACT and SAT exams. The program includes reviewing math and English foundation skills across the curriculum in grades 6-10 and the integration of standardized testing prep into the academic schedule for ninth- and tenth-graders to enhance learning and alleviate test-prep concerns. Additional $473,000 in financial aid: Thanks to funds given toward the capital campaign, we are delighted to award a significant amount of additional financial aid to talented students in the 2018-19 academic year, bringing the total to a record-breaking amount over $2 million.

S P R I N G

After the doors to the glittering Ziegfeld Ballroom opened, welcoming 600 Dwight community members to our 2018 Spring Benefit, many memories were shared — and new ones were made — during the evening’s festivities. This special celebration of Chancellor Stephen Spahn’s milestone 50 years in education and visionary leadership broke all records in attendance and support for Dwight’s exciting new initiative to integrate Spark Tank methodologies into the curriculum to benefit all students. A total of $512,000 in net revenue was raised, which is a marked 45% more than last year.

38

B E N E F I T

There were several heartfelt tributes to Chancellor Spahn in words, song, and on film from past and current students. Special guest Helen Rosenthal, New York City Council Member of the 6th District, surprised the Chancellor with a proclamation commending him for “his incredible and enduring contributions … not merely for the length of his distinguished tenure, but the tremendously positive impact he has had on the lives of countless students, alumni and colleagues throughout our City and beyond …” Susan Kessler, Chair of the Board of The Dwight School Foundation, presented the Chancellor with a proclamation from Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President, declaring April 13, 2018, as “Stephen Spahn Appreciation Day.”

The Bridge to the Future named in honor of the Class of 2018 In recognition of the senior class families and the efforts of the Senior Gift Committee, co-chaired by Alex Gendzier and Jessica Lindsey, who raised over $260,000 for The Dwight School Foundation’s Annual Fund, Dwight’s new passageway connecting Timothy House to the new brownstone at 21 West 88th Street will be dedicated in honor of the Class of 2018. A plaque commemorating the Class of 2018 will be installed on the wall of the passageway, which serves as a bridge to the future, symbolizing Dwight’s commitment to growth and innovation, and as a perpetual reminder of their unique impact on Dwight.

The Dwight School Foundation In-Kind Donors and Volunteers

We would like to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting The Dwight School Foundation’s efforts: The Dwight School Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor,

Vice Chancellor, Head of School, and the Foundation’s Advancement Office to think critically about how Foundation resources can positively impact the lives of Dwight students and faculty. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to provide support for student financial aid and innovation grants, and faculty professional development. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from twelfth grade families and helps

identify spaces or items to be named in honor of the graduating class. The Spark Tank Committee advises, mentors, and approves funding for K-12 student projects. The Spring Benefit Committee organizes and promotes the Foundation’s largest community event. The Parents Association Executive Committee works closely with the Foundation to promote Foundation initiatives within the parent body. The PA President is an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees. The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful

ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other. The Alumni Council President is an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

Letter from the Vice Chancellor

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight, This Annual Report punctuates an extraordinary year for The Dwight School Foundation, our School, and the entire Dwight community. Indeed, 2017-18 was notable for a variety of reasons, including my father’s 50th anniversary, which Dwight celebrated on two special occasions. The first was our global Carnegie Hall concert, where students from around the world shared their musical sparks of genius with a sold-out audience of over 2,800 in the iconic Stern Auditorium. The second was the Foundation’s dazzling Spring Benefit, which gathered multiple generations of our School’s family and friends in tribute to my father and his visionary leadership.

68

These events were proud moments for me personally and as Vice Chancellor. My dedication to igniting the spark of genius in every child emerged from my father’s steadfast commitment to the same. I received a personalized world-class Dwight education and believe deeply in its value and the lifelong benefits that students reap from attending our School.

In addition, the Foundation, which purchased cutting-edge technology and science equipment for students in 2017-18, provides critical support to the community through student financial aid, professional development grants, and Spark Tank innovation grants year-in and year-out. These core components comprise the building blocks upon which we all depend.

This year was also memorable due to the numerous achievements of our students, whose intellect, talents, and contributions to our community and the world never cease to impress; and for the initiatives we launched to ensure that every graduate is prepared for the future that awaits.

This fall, as we open new classrooms in 21 West 88th Street and put the finishing touches on stateof-the-art spaces designed to inspire new levels of creativity and collaboration, we extend deep appreciation to the Foundation for sharing our mission. Together, we are preparing graduates to innovate and collaborate to meet 21st-century global challenges.

As a frontier IB school, we are committed to piloting programs that advance opportunities for learning and position students for success in the rapidly changing global marketplace. Thanks to your generosity and that of The Dwight School Foundation, we are training every teacher to be innovative in the classroom and integrating Spark Tank methodologies into the curriculum so that every student is equipped with the entrepreneurial skills and experience needed for the jobs of tomorrow.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead and to your continued support. Warm regards,

Blake Spahn Vice Chancellor, Dwight School

Ways to Give The Annual Fund is the Foundation’s most important fundraising effort and it is vital to the success of the school. There are many different ways you can make a contribution: Cash - All cash (including check and credit card) gifts are fully

tax-deductible. Gifts can be made using the attached pledge envelope or online at www.dwight.edu/givingtodwight.

Securities - A gift of appreciated stock, which has been held

for more than one year, allows you to avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation. It also qualifies you for an income tax

charitable deduction based on the fair-market value of the stock on the date you make the gift.

Matching Gift - Matching gifts are an easy way to increase the

value of your contribution. If you and/or your spouse work for a

matching gift company, please obtain the necessary form from your personnel office and send it along with your gift to The Dwight School Foundation. Make a Pledge - Pledges can be fulfilled with one payment or

multiple payments and simply need to be completed in full by June 30, 2019.

AmazonSmile - Support The Dwight School Foundation every

time you shop, at no cost to you. Every eligible purchase you make on AmazonSmile will result in a 0.5% donation to The Dwight School Foundation. Make Dwight your charity of choice by going to smile.amazon.com today.

For questions about the Annual Fund, please contact Nicole Vaughan, Associate Director of Development, at 646.400.0314 or nvaughan@dwight.edu.

The Dwight School Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit entity that was established in 1969 to provide financial aid to Dwight students and professional development grants to Dwight faculty. The Foundation expanded to include Spark Tank grants to students in 2015. This report gratefully acknowledges gifts between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. Names are listed as requested by each donor on the annual fund envelope. Best efforts were made to ensure the accuracy of this report.
