Dwight School Calendar 2012-2013

This picture is a happy bird sitting on a branch. I created the bird using Craypas and the sky with watercolors. I painted the bird because I like painting animals. —Mina Shimada ’22

Founded in 1872, Dwight School New York is a nursery through grade twelve private international school dedicated to igniting the “spark of genius” in every child. With a world-class faculty and students representing more than forty countries, Dwight was the first school in the U.S. to adopt the full International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students from preschool through the twelfth grade. It is the flagship school in the global network of The Dwight Schools and programs, which includes Dwight School London; Dwight School Canada; Dwight School Seoul (opening fall 2012); and the Dwight American-Capital Normal High School Program in Beijing, China.

A gift to the Annual Fund is one of the most powerful ways to invest in the future of Dwight. Your generous support helps fund student financial aid, faculty professional development, and other enrichment items. Your gift also ensures the financial strength and flexibility for Dwight to fulfill its mission. We encourage you to join parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and friends in supporting this critical fund. Please remember the current giving year ends June 30, 2013. Thank you in advance for leading the charge in your commitment to Dwight. For more information, please call Kari Loya, Development Director, at 212.724.6360 x233.

I was inspired to paint this landscape because I believe landscapes allow you to open your mind and imagine that you are wherever your painting takes place, and it still seems real to some extent.

I was inspired by a personal experience. My interest in modeling and fashion inspired me to make a portrait of a model that depicts how they hide their emotions and show everything through their looks. I used only one black pen, markers and water colors and made a lot of details, which I thought made it more interesting. —Irina Datieva ’13

The assignment was to do a self-portrait of something we loved to do. I thought about it very hard, and in the end I decided on skating. When I was sketching, I tried to answer the 5 W’s: what, where, why, when and who. I then painted over my sketch with watercolor pencils. —Mairéad McEwen ’18

My idea was inspired by the Aztec culture and rituals that we studied in class. The Aztecs were very interested in the animals that surrounded them and frequently wore masks and built shrines in their honor. The mask depicts my idea of one of the masks that they wore while reciting their rituals to the bald eagle. —Robert Spencer ’17

In class we were told to choose a piece by Albrecht DĂźrer to recreate, and I was immediately drawn to the detail in this art piece. I really love the drama he created in the lines and the cross hatching, and this is what I tried to recreate.

I was making a mask and decided to make a happy clown instead of a creepy clown. I used a balloon and covered it with paper mache. Then I left the balloon out in the sun, which made it deflate, leaving the paper mache like that. Then I painted it and added details with bits of paper. —Skyler Rosenberg ’21

I depicted an iPhone in this block print because the art assignment required me to portray a common object. The idea that technology, like the iPhone, has become so common in our lives is astounding and inspirational to me.

I have a thing for peacocks because of how beautiful they are. In this piece, we were making collages made out of paper we painted ourselves. I enjoyed this project so much and could do a thousand more. —Bella Civorelli ’20

The image is a self-portrait. I am at the zoo watching the penguins and I am enjoying the visit. The sky is purple, because sometimes the sky gets purple in the evening. I wanted to paint with the colors that I like. —Clara Escayola ’24
