Mission
History
Coal was founded on the belief that headwear is more than an accessory. It’s part of you, your identity, and your lifestyle. We build this idea into each of our designs by using quality materials and exacting detail, and crafting styles that are as unique as you are. We are dedicated to making headwear more than an accessory.
In 2002 a group of friends got together to start a company that reflected their shared vision: headwear should be more than an accessory. At the time, hats, knit beanies, and the like were little more than a commodity that brands put their logo on. Coal chose not to. We saw an opportunity to provide the market with accessories that took fit, fashion, and function equally seriously, and looked at headwear as an extension of you, your identity and your lifestyle. Design was—and still is—the main factor of every style. Not only from the color, yarn / material type, or subtle branding, but to how the style actually fit and looked when worn. No longer was the beanie a standard size and shape that each company decorated with different patterns, colors and giant logos. It was now all about design, uncompromising attention to detail, and superior components. Ten years later, we remain dedicated to making headwear more than an accessory. It’s been an epic journey. This logo throughout the catalog indicates a Coal Considered style. A classically inspired collection of headwear where no detail is overlooked. In our Spring/Summer 2013 collection we introduce new innovative designs and even finer materials, from pure Mongolian cashmere, domestic wool felt and genuine Panama straw, to organic and recycled cotton.

Speciality Materials: Cashmere Our cashmere comes from goats that reside in the mountainous plateaus of Mongolia. At this high altitude and in the harsh weather conditions, the goat grows a thick coat of soft hair that— compared to other fibers— has more insulating power, providing warmth without weight and bulk. The cost of cashmere comes from limited supply and the difficulty to gather the fleece.

Organic Cotton Our organic cotton is a wonderfully versatile yarn that is made into both beanies and woven hats. The cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides and other agrochemicals.
Recycled Cotton
Coal promotes sustainability through the use of recycled products, natural fibers and biodegradable materials.
The yarn is repurposed waste from the manufacturing process, it is a combination of scraps and clippings. Because the color of the original material is in the fiber, it causes less dyes and chemicals to be used in the process of repurposing the material into new yarn.
Genuine Panama Our genuine panama hats start as hat bodies hand woven from the Toquilla fiber in Ecuador. The hat bodies are tightly woven, and once in the US, expertly blocked, producing a beautifully crafted hat. The combination of fine craftsmanship and high quality materials produces a hat that is excellent protection against the hot rays of a sunny day. The Panama hat is great for sunny weather use, but not ideal for rainy conditions.
