Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Hello Reader,

As we nearly reach the end

of Spring we welcome the warmer weather with open arms and keep our fingers crossed for a long hot Summer!

June is always a great month for family events like The Big Lunch at Newent's Lakeside on the 7th - it's an ideal day out for all the family to have lots of fun. I'm a big tennis fan and I'm excited about Wimbledon starting on the 29th, with two weeks nonstop tennis, not forgetting the strawberries and cream. Talking of which - Dymock's Parish Hall is holding its Strawberry Fayre on the 21st June where you can tuck into plenty of strawberries and cream teas! Finally, in last month's magazine we featured fundraising efforts of two local Nepalese restaurants who were desperate to raise as much money as they can to help the Nepalese plight they needed your support and you so didn't let them down! Read all about it on page 31.

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning and trying to curry favour with the young.

Quite a few middle-class breakfasts must have been ruined when the newspapers of 11th June 1965 were opened. For the news was truly shocking. The Beatles were to receive MBEs in the Birthday Honours List! It’s difficult at this distance – and almost impossible for people who weren’t around at the time – to realise what a big deal this was. And if anything it seems comical that so many retired colonels sent their medals back to the Palace in disgust. What blimps these outraged fuddy-duddies must have been, we think today; and the apocalyptic language with which they expressed their horror – the Beatles were “vulgar numbskulls”, snarled one; Britain would fall “even deeper into international ridicule and contempt”, howled another; and the word “debased” appeared over and over again – makes them seem even more so. As for the newly-elected Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who had put the Fab Four up for their gongs, he was vilified as subverting the honours system

But how wrong those criticisms were, for this was not an act of subversion, but of absorption. The Beatles had become hugely successful dollar earners, with nine US number one singles and four US number one albums to their credit so far, as well as the creation of an enormous American market for other British acts; and that made them part of the Establishment and entitled to all the honours that came with it. The Beatles themselves sensed this and seem to have been uneasy over it. John Lennon reportedly worried about being seen as a sell-out and had to be talked into accepting his MBE by Brian Epstein; and the Lovable Moptops famously tried to make a pantomime of their investiture that October, turning up in John’s psychedelic RollsRoyce, wearing unconventional suits, smoking a joint in the Palace loos (later and rather unconvincingly denied), and trying (and failing) to banter with the Queen. Four years later John confirmed that he had never been happy with the whole business when he returned his medal – without a trace of irony! – in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Vietnam and Biafran wars. So

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

perhaps it was the shocking headlines of 11th June 1965 and the events that followed that spurred the Beatles into escaping from the curse of light entertainment – of Saturday morning children’s TV shows, of guest slots on Lulu (or, worse, a show of their own), of Royal Command Performances, of touring unto exhaustion. Once “Help!” was finished later that year they put the three-minute love-songs (albeit the superior and beautifully crafted threeminute love-songs) of the first half of the career behind them and started exploring their talent in earnest. And then Brian Epstein died; and although his death was tragically untimely (and although he was no showbiz monster to compare with the likes of Larry Parnes or Simon Cowell) it did finally complete the process that had started at Buckingham palace of freeing the Beatles from the light entertainment treadmill that had ruined so many of their great contemporaries – notably Dusty Springfield – and left them with nothing to do but create. So perhaps, ultimately, we have Harold Wilson to thank for The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.

Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Damien Hirst (7th), Elizabeth Hurley (10th), and Garry Pallister (30th). Cake and botox to you all! Page 11

2nd NEWENT ANNUAL BIG LUNCH at Newent Lake Sunday 7th June This year sees the second annual Big Lunch in Newent run by The Voice of Newent and will take place by Newent Lake on Sunday 7th June 2015 from 12.00pm to 4.00pm. For those who are not aware The Voice of Newent is a Newent based voluntary community group that organises, and helps people to organise, events to raise funds for deserving causes. Following on from the inaugural Newent Big Lunch last year this one promises to be a bigger and better event with more stalls than before. The theme this year will be the magical MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY and you will see characters such as Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts and the March Hare and you are welcome to bring your own costume if you wish. One of the main attractions will be the "Soak - a Bloke/ ess" which will feature our very own District Councillor Councillor Len Lawton! Come on people, now's your chance. This will also feature the stalwarts behind the bar in the George Hotel. We are still trying to get other prominent people so don't miss it. The local Scout Group will be performing their unique Handbells and we are very pleased to see the return of our old favourites The Strawberry Hill Dancers who entertained us so magnificently last year. The many stalls will include the Coconut Shy, sweets from Sweet Memories, Chutneys

etc with Maggies Kitchen, fruit juicing with Newent in Bloom, cake making and hat decorating with Fair Shares, bottle stall, teas with the Chill Out Zone and many more. Activities include Story Telling in the story telling tent, Face Painting, Petting Animals with Andy and Charlotte, Fire Brigade, Police, St Johns Ambulance and many others.

Some of the 400+ enjoying the Big Lunch last year

On the stage will be our favourite local singer with the beautiful voice Lila J as well as our sensation of last year Kai, now 10 years old and still going strong! Onion Ed has indicated he may be able to take time out of his busy schedule to make an appearance. Quite a problem now he is an international star and is spending a great deal of time preparing for the Onion Fayre in September. The event will be completed by a raffle with some tremendous prizes so please come along, bring your own picnics and enjoy the day. The Big Lunch is a simple idea from The Eden Project with the aim to get as many people as possible to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act of friendship and fun. The Voice of Newent embraced these sentiments to put on the first Big Lunch which was such a success and received such praise from the people of Newent that it was decided to make it an annual event so please come and enjoy the day. - by Colin Thomas,

The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. Getting More Done in a Day

Soon we are going to be having a National Stress Awareness Day. I wonder if this day is to make us aware of stress and if we haven’t got any perhaps we should go out and get some. Seriously, stress and pressure can be okay if it is managed as it helps us to new levels of performance. If it is not managed it can become a nasty serious illness that requires expert medical treatment which I am not qualified to discuss. Surely, prevention is far better than the cure.

The three biggest causes of stress at work are: 1. The mismanagement of time. People being not trained how to manage their time, unable to prioritise and not having a system that reminds them of what should be done in a day. 2. People being given a new job, role or task and not being trained how to do it causes massive stress. They don’t perform the new job, role etc and then try to hide that they have not done it and distress follows. 3. Sheer work overload which is rare in the private sector but common in the public sector particularly when there is only a once a year appraisal. A really good manager or boss is appraising, guiding and helping people and most particularly watching for signs of stress and the inability to cope.

So let me address number one, time management. There are only 24 hours in a day so we cannot really manage time all we can do is manage ourselves to time. Here is an easy three step technique to enable you to do just that. 1. At the end of the day write down all of the most important things you want to do or should do the next day. 2. Now number that list in order of importance. In other words the most important job becomes number one. 3. The following day go straight to number one and do it. Then on to number two and so on. Yes this plan is incredibly simplistic but it is an outstandingly successful method of time management guaranteed to reduce stress. If you only complete three tasks out of 20 they are of course the most important. Every day can become a day of achievement as against a day of mere activity AND you will be less stressed AND more motivated. Happiness is a ticked off “to do” list.

Auction Anecdote

I suppose one could assume that since we are an all female team at Smiths Auctions that would be the main reason we just love selling jewellery at the saleroom, however there are a lot of other positives to selling jewellery compared to some of the other items we handle. I guess that one of the best things about jewellery is that it tends to be valuable and therefore generates a good sale total as well as being exciting when it reaches high prices. But another big plus is it’s small size which makes it so easy to deal with compared to some of the heavier and more bulky items we sometimes sell.We can literally fit hundreds of pretty sparkly items of jewellery into just one or two small cabinets with ease and then of course it is lightweight and easy to pack and post after the sale. Jewellery is also inherently attractive and therefore makes the saleroom advertising and websites look more appealing and upmarket than selling collectable but ugly items which do not photograph well! Smiths April sale had a huge jewellery section including a large selection of antique jewellery which is very popular with trade buyers who might be shopping for specialist collectors who like Victorian cameos, jet or enamel for example. Our private buyers have a varied taste with many preferring modern jewellery but also a good selection who like antique jewellery since the reason they come to the saleroom ‘to shop’ is ‘that they like old things’. From a large consignment of antique jewellery an Edwardian platinum cluster ring with a cushion cut diamond within diamond surround seemed to tick all the boxes for many of our buyers both trade and private. On the auction day a trade buyer from the Sussex/Surrey border who had not even viewed the ring in person bought it for £1000 – bidding on the internet against a private buyer in the room. Smiths next antiques and collectables auction is on the 19th June and has a special section for pictures. For all enquiries see our website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk or telephone 01531 821776. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Newent Local History Society Before moving to Newent I was unaware of the extent of the ‘Joe Meek Phenomenon’ believing him to be a ‘one-hit Telstar wonder’. How wrong could I be, as was demonstrated when Rob Bradford of the Joe Meek Appreciation Society spoke to us in May about aspects of Joe’s professional life, mainly in London, although obviously starting in Newent. The main points to emerge in this very thorough and well resourced bio-pic were as follows;

Joe’s relative lack of formal education made his creative genius and achievements even more remarkable The extent of the challenge facing Joe Meek in the face of 4 record companies (EMI, DECCA, PHILLIPS and PYE) who jointly controlled 80% of the record production, was enormous When these companies realised Joe’s potential he was in great demand by them and, prior

to setting up his own record label, was responsible for 1200 recordings with an eclectic mix of artists from Lonnie Donegan to Harry Secombe One vignette to emerge was that Joe Meek was responsible for the ‘shooting arrow’ effect in the ‘Robin Hood’ theme tune having typically used nothing more than a ruler and an elastic band When, after a falling out with a colleague, Joe set up his own recording studio, he had to build his own equipment, much to the derision of the large record companies (who were soon to eat large portions of humble pie) While Joe Meek was not a singer or pianist he had a remarkable ability to ‘hear’ a finished record in his mind. Such was the case with ‘Telstar’ and our speaker played three clips to demonstrate the transition from Joe Meek singing the tune through to the finished product , a process

WORDWHEEL

Using only the letters in the Wordwheel, you have ten minutes to find as many words as possible, none of which may be plurals, foreign words or proper nouns. Each word must be of three letters or more, all must contain the central letter and letters can only be used once in every word. There is at least one word that uses all of the letters in the wheel.

Our next talk is on June 11 on ‘One Man and His Archive’. In July and August we will be visiting the National Memorial Arboretum and the historic sites of Gloucester. Visits are open to non-members. For details please contact Howard Thomas on 01531828799 or Lionel Carter on 01531821027.

Barbecued Rack of Ribs Ready in 1 hour

Serves 4

Pre-cooking ribs in a pan of simmering water before placing them on the barbecue will ensure meltingly tender meat every time. This method also saves space on the barbecue as the final cooking time with the sauce is much shorter. Serve with a spicy chunky tomato salsa, if liked.

Ingredients: • 2-3 racks of pork ribs (see Tip) • 6 tbsp tomato ketchup • 3 tbsp maple syrup • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 2 tbsp sunflower oil • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • 1-2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

Tip: Most large supermarkets sell racks of ribs or ask your local butcher to prepare them for you. Single ribs will work just as well (you’ll need about 2kg in weight), just reduce the simmering time to about 25 minutes.

Page 28

Place the ribs in a large pan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil then skim off any scum from the surface of the water. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, place the rest of the ingredients in a pan and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Leave to cool. Remove the racks from the pan and drain on a board lined with kitchen paper. Leave to cool for 5 minutes then brush each rack liberally with some of the sauce. Cook the ribs on the edge of a hot barbecue for 10-15 minutes, turning and basting with any remaining sauce until the ribs are lightly charred in places. Alternatively, the ribs can be cooked under a medium preheated grill.

Pauntley Real Ale Festival 2015 This Year sees the Pauntley Real Ale Festival celebrating its 6th year. It will be held at Pauntley Village Hall, Brands Green, Glos, GL18 3JD from 12 noon to 11pm. Pauntley is a sleepy parish just outside Newent which is famous for being the birthplace of that famous Londoner Dick Whittington. The festival is hosted by the real ale group CAMRA and since its inocuous inception 5 years ago it has blossomed into an extremely successful festival. The idea for the festival was conceived by Rik and Pamela

Kucharski, Andy and Mandy Hamilton and Mark Robinson and what started with one barrel of ale and a barbeque has, in those subsequent years, become a fully fledged, all day festival with music on stage all day and attendance in excess of 500 last year. This year the festival is offering a pig roast, a barbeque, bar snacks, vegetarian foods, the signature real ales (of course) together with with lagers, ciders, perry and wines, tea coffee and soft drinks.

07715 530236 or Patricia on 01531 820075. The entrance fee includes a free festival programme and a free commemorative glass whilst stocks last. Parking is free. There are also free basic camping facilities but these must be prebooked using the numbers above. Terms and conditions can be found on pauntleyrealalefestival.org - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

There will be live music and entertainment on stage featuring many local bands, all day and well into the evening together with Story Telling, face painting and a raffle and other stalls. Tickets are, in advance £6 (18yrs+), or On The Door £8. Children are welcome and free.

Crowds enjoying last years festival

Advance tickets can be purchased from Mark on

Forest of Dean (Motorcycle Club) Treasure Hunt A circular route of approximately 50 miles beginning and ending at Xerox Social Club in Mitcheldean, provisionally scheduled for Sunday July 12th. Motorcyles or groups of motorcycles will be released onto the route at 5 minute intervals in a clockwise direction. Cars will be released onto the route at 5 minute intervals in an anticlockwise direction. Each direction will come with turn by turn directions along with 20 questions identical for each direction. The average speed Page 30

quoted for this type of event is 15 miles per hour so about a 3hour run. Each direction/question sheet will be given out for a £10 donation with a £100 prize for a fully correct question sheet if there is only one. If more than one correct sheet is returned then only one will be drawn from those to receive the prize. The start time envisaged is10.30am. The Xerox Social Club facilities will be open and a BBQ will be done for those returning, if requested. As cancer seems to have touched many within the club I suggest

The real ale bar is busy that any proceeds are split 3 ways - money will go to two nationally know charities (Sue Ryder and McMillan) so that we can benefit from their high profile and systems to publicise and piggyback a local charity onto the event (Great Oaks Forest Hospice) so that some of the benefit is kept local. If we collect or are offered raffle prizes they should be bundled so that we end up with a maximum of 10 decent prizes which will be numbered 1-10 and allocated to tickets in the order in which they are drawn. Organisers commitment will be to stay in or near the bar on Sunday to collect money and hand out direction/ quiz sheet (it might be worth doing a verbal version for CD or MP3).

Donations for Nepal continue to pour in In our May issue you may have read about the various fundraising events being staged to help the victims of the two Nepalese earthquakes. Two Nepalese pubs

and restaurants in the area have raised a staggering amount of money through auctions and donations from customers. Ganesh Sherchan from the Roadmaker Inn in Gorsley visited Newent Magazine's Gregg Upwards on his weekly show on Sunshine Radio to tell of his country's pain and to promote their auction night which raised £5,796. Ganesh said both him and his staff would like to thank everyone who donated auction items for the event. He added that his staff have added another £2,000 to the amount raised and that donations continue to pour in.

Ganesh Sherchan with Gregg Upwards in the Sunshine Radio Studio

Serving Gurkha Bishnu Ghale teamed up with Keshar Sherchan from Maisemore's White Hart Inn and raised almost £1,000 through donations handed over the bar as

Keshar Sherchan with the collection bottle at the bar well as clothes and blankets. They once again would like to express their deepest thank to everyone who has contributed to help the victims of the earthquakes.

Busy Show Season for Howle Hill Nursery both parties, having Peter Dowle and his Howle Hill Nursery landscape gardening team are currently embracing their busy show season – constructing gardens at the RHS Malvern Spring Garden Show and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, coupled with working alongside the RHS to dress the Severn Hall at Malvern ready to host the stars of the show, Raymond Blanc and Gregg Wallace. Peter commented “We have had all hands on deck the last few weeks to make both operations logistically possible and have received arctic lorry loads of plants from Italy and Holland for the respective jobs.” He added, “The Howle Hill Nursery Acer stand at Malvern is one to look out for, a truly stunning range from 2 litre pots to 200 litre mammoth specimens.” The Chelsea garden is designed by James Basson for the French cosmetics giant L’Occitane and Peter and team proudly continue the working relationship with Page 34

designed and delivered gold for L’Occitane in 2012 for the ‘L’Occitane Immortelle Garden’ followed by Gold and best in category alongside James Basson in 2013 for the garden entitled ‘After the Fire’.

Peters’ involvement with the Malvern Show has grown in recent years, from delivering the Gold and Best in Show garden ‘Where East meets West’ in 2013 to now also actively working alongside the RHS to visually enhance the impact of the show and the show grounds with displays, signage and site dressing. Howle Hill Nursery is open for visitors Monday – Saturday (9am–5.30pm), located between Ross-on-Wye and Ruardean (HR9 5SP) and is fully stocked for the new season with a stunning range, including the South Wests’ leading range of Japanese Maples and the on-site offices offering full design services as well as construction, planting and maintenance teams.

PETS

Are Rabbits Really a Low-Profile Pet? As lovely as rabbits are, especially as a first pet, you may be surprised to know they can be just as costly and time-consuming to care for and dogs and cats. When you calculate the cost of a rabbit hutch, food, straw and a run, it quickly adds up, so here are some facts you might want to consider before giving in to the children’s wishes: • Your rabbit will need exercise as much as any other pet, and a hutch on its own simply isn’t big enough. You’ll need to buy a rabbit run of around 8’ x 4’ to allow your rabbit the exercise it needs. • Vets’ fees for regular checkups can be expensive, and aren’t covered by insurance. Vaccinations against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease will be needed. • Flystrike is a particular issue for rabbits. During warm weather they are prone to having flies lay eggs on their skin. These hatch into maggots, which if unnoticed, feed on the rabbit’s flesh causing serious skin issues. • Dental problems are common - up to 75% of household rabbits are diagnosed with dental disease according to Rabbit Awareness Week.

• Neutering is recommended by vets, and again, is not covered by pet insurance. Bringing a rabbit inside the house means that you’ll need to supervise it carefully to make sure it doesn’t chew through cables and wires. Rabbits also require daily grooming, especially long-haired breeds, as hair balls can be a problem if they block the stomach. By Ann Haldon

Cake Art Therapy... With age comes experience, so they say, but the worry and stress that comes along with it is not always mentioned. I went to art school many moons ago and now I design and make cakes... who would’ve thought! Anyway, what I’m trying to say is there are many creative avenues, and in my later years making traditional cakes and decorating cupcakes and large cakes for special occasions has given me a pleasure I didn’t think I’d feel again. It hasn’t been easy but with the support and encouragement of friends I am getting there. My dear partner gave me some large A4 colouring books and pencils for Christmas last year and after a couple of months I started to fill in the pictures. It has such a calming effect that I spend a couple of hours in the evening colouring in whilst watching the television a few times a week. Some of the patterns have even spurred on ideas for cake designs. The downside is that it can become addictive, but not to worry as I then go to the other creative bit - making cakes and sorting out the colour icings for designs. If you take a look at my Facebook Page – ‘Occasionally Tea and Plenty of Cake’ you will see many photos of my cake work. This is the third year in a row that somebody has requested a box of cupcakes for their Eurovision party. 6 or 12 flags are chosen by the client so the cakes are topped with a flag and something else that represents that country. If anybody feels they’d like to learn how to create designs for their large cakes and cupcakes then please contact me as I hold 1-2-1 tailor-made classes to suit most needs. You’d be surprised how creative you really are! Marian Buckmaster; Forest of Dean

Motoring Top 5 Eco Cars

By James Baggott @CarDealerEd

As the costs to run our beloved petrol- and diesel-powered cars increase, it’s no wonder we’re all on the hunt for an alternative solution. With electric and hybrid powertrains driving some of the industry’s most esteemed supercars – the new Honda NSX and BMW i8 – it would appear that there is another way forward. But if eco is at the forefront of your mind, which car should you have on your driveway? Here are our choices.

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta is the best selling car on the market – and not without good reason. Although it’s not labelled an official ‘eco’ car, its low running costs make it the ideal cost-effective solution for most buyers. Choose the 1.4-litre TDCi, priced from £13,065, and you can expect an average mileage of 68mpg and emissions of 107g/km.

Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 completes the ‘Thee Musketeers’ line-up, alongside the Mini and VW Beetle, as one of today’s most stylish cars. Running a 1.2-litre engine, the 500 TwinAir can achieve 49.6 urban mpg and dodges road tax by emitting just 95g/km of CO2. The TwinAir is priced from £12,715 and is the perfect city run around.

BMW i3

BMW’s futuristic i3 is one of just a few cars that has revolutionised the way we view the future of motoring. Not only does it combine eco-friendly driving with premium qualities, it can also reach 93mph, can go from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds and has a driving range of 106 miles, thanks to its on-board petrol motor, which works alongside a 127kW electric unit. Sadly, its £29,130 price means we don’t see many of them on the road.

Volkswagen E-Up!

The E-Up! is one of the most practical and reasonably-priced electric cars on the market, with five doors and an estimated driving range of 93 miles. It takes six hours to recharge and has a comfortable top speed of 81mph. The price isn’t so attractive at £19,525, but this electric motor is close to feeling more like the average supermini.

Renault Twizy

Renault’s Twizy is just as fun as it looks. It may be the slowest of the pack, with a top speed of just 56mph, but it’s guaranteed to provide you with the most entertainment. Priced at £7,795, its 15kW battery takes four hours to charge, it has a driving range of 62 miles and emits zero emissions. And just look at its styling!

Record entry for 25th running of the Dymock Half Marathon There was a fitting record entry of over 140 runners for the 25th anniversary of the popular local village Dymock half marathon held in conjunction with the Dymock Music Festival, both based on the Dymock Cricket Club ground. Starting on the Much Marcle road with the traditional firing of the Napoleonic era ancient cannon, runners faced a warm day for the rolling hilly course, but an early shower cooled things off a little and although the threatened further rain did not materialise, the fastest times on the day were quicker than in 2014. Leading the field home was the far travelled David Tomlin of Devon’s Torbay AC in an excellent time of 1-16-27, just pipping last year’s winner and first local runner James Rose who lives in Dymock, but runs for Severn AC, into second place with 1-16-50. Repeating her first woman place of last year, Lucy

Richens of Westbury Harriers recorded a fine 1-30-57, with the first local woman Jess Saridge, running for Newent, finishing in 1-50-00. Forest of Dean AC men took the male team award and Almost Athletes, who always turn up at Dymock en-masse as the race is part of their club championships, won the woman’s team prize. The first veteran lady was Sheryl Hall of Forest of Dean in 1-41-41 and the first male vet was Nick Salway with a time of 1-25-13. The prizes were presented by Dymock Cricket Club Chairman Martin Fowke. Organiser Annie Dobson gave grateful thanks for the great support from her volunteer local helpers at marshalling points and drinks stations and for the financial backers of the event - and in particular from main sponsor, the local Three Choirs Vineyard and also from Ledbury based Clubsport and Wigwam socks for prize donations.

David Tomlin Torbay AC wins the Dymock Half marathon 2015.

Home & Interiors The Kings of Bling

The French kings of the 17th and 18th centuries had enormous influence on aristocratic interiors. For elegance, luxury and splendour, look no further than the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, writes Katherine Sorrell The year: 1681. The place: the royal court in France. And, according to King Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, who had assumed power two years earlier: ‘There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces

and their precious furniture.’ The king was inspired to adapt a small hunting lodge just outside Paris, extend it, and fill it with jaw-droppingly splendid decoration and furnishings, all in order to glorify his monarchy. Its style was, of course, the most up-to-date possible, a new fashion known as Baroque - dramatically dazzling and opulent, epitomised by jewellike colours, large furniture in bulbous shapes, trompe l’oeil paintwork and glittering silver, gold and crystal to surprise and impress. The new palace was called Versailles. The interior of Versailles, designed by Charles Lebrun, was filled with furniture made in specialist workshops by the finest native and foreign artisans. Proportioned for enormous rooms, pieces were carved and gilded in heavy, scrolling shapes, upholstered with velvet and brocade, and inlaid with exotic materials such as marble, silver, ivory, lapis lazuli and agate. There were fabrics woven with silver

or gold thread, lavish rugs and walls hung with tapestries or covered in marble or mirror. Perhaps most extreme of all was the specially commissioned furniture and lighting made of silver. Every tiny detail of this grand, formal and ornate design had been considered. It was utterly magnificent, and immediately became the envy of every other court in Europe. Fashions are forever changing, however, and, inevitably, there was a reaction against the monumental style of Baroque. By the turn of the 18th century Louis XIV was urging a ‘graceful and airy’ style on his granddaughter-inlaw. After his death in 1715 the court moved to Paris, where a less ceremonial lifestyle developed, with smaller rooms and lighter furniture. Known as Rococo (because shells and rocks – rocailles – featured so frequently), it was frivolous and exuberant, all delicate curves and asymmetrical lines while, overall, homes were arranged so as to be comfortable rather than impressive, colours soft and feminine, and patterns delicate. The typical Rococo home featured elaborate plasterwork and carved, painted and gilded wooden panels, walls hung with silk or hand-painted wallpapers imported from China, all reflected in ornamental mirrors. Furniture often had a curving front and – most typically of all – cabriole legs. Also known as Louis Quinze style, Rococo was at its height in France in the 1740s. Within a decade or so, however,

Making A Pest Of Themselves by Pippa Greenwood They might be small but aphids (also widely known as greenfly and blackfly) can do an awful lot of damage to just about every plant in your garden - and greenhouse, conservatory and windowsill for that matter. They are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary massively in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or kaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden, especially in the warmer counties or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. So what makes these tiny pests so successful and so damaging to our precious plants? The main reason is that they can breed rapidly and so their numbers build up incredibly fast and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and Page 56

give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. I always think of this as like a Russian doll – inside a female aphid there will be young aphid, and inside this there will be an aphid embryo. Later in the season male aphids may be produced and these then mate with the females. The symptoms they cause vary, but include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. As they feed on plants, aphids may transmit virus infections, so virus symptoms may develop too. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants such as lime trees or as a sticky layer on roses and other plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless black ‘sooty moulds’ which make the leaves look as if someone has sprinkled soot on them. As aphids increase in size they shed their skins and the cast skins are often easy to spot on host plants – they look rather like the

discarded pyjamas often seen on a teenager’s bedroom floor! If you grow roses you’ll have discovered that there are several species of aphid which may attack them, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. There is usually a lot of honeydew followed by sooty mould, as well as stunting and distortion of the leaves. If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring, which causes weakening and a huge drop in the number of those tasty pods. It also attacks globe artichokes, dahlias, poppies and nasturtiums. In the spring the aphid feeds on Philadelphus and Viburnum. If you pinch out the aphidencrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved. Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples,

pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. Another common problem on fruit is the currant Blister Aphid, a small, pale green aphid which feeds beneath the leaves, mostly of redcurrants, with pale yellow or reddish blisters forming in spring and summer.

hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory but will often have a noticeable effect in warmer summers outside too. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available as native British ladybird adults or as their young or larvae from my website, www. pippagreenwood.com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once

There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully. Summer Solstice Summer Solstice (sometimes also referred to as Midsummer) falls between June 21st-22nd, and celebrates the longest day and shortest night of the year, the sun reaching its highest point in the northern hemisphere, and the very pinnacle of summer-time. Midsummer is celebrated with a variety of different traditions and celebrations around the world – and indeed around our own country, with parties commonly held from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cornish coast, and in particular at Stonehenge, where tens of thousands gather every year for an all-day festival, watching the sun rise early on 21st June and celebrating the longest day with everything from quiet observations to full-on festivities. The lighting of bonfires often forms a big part of the culture, celebrating the burning light of the sun and mirroring it, a tradition stemming from pagan and Celtic roots. In addition to having huge Pagan significance, the solstice is relevant too to some branches of Buddhism and those who practice Yoga, in which Sun Salutations often play an important role and the sun is something very much worthy of reverence. The solstice can be explained by the angle of the earth’s axis, the tilt of which is the reason we experience our four seasons each year. When the axis tilts towards the sun during the summer months we know here in the UK, winter is of course in the southern hemisphere, rotating entirely by the time we reach the opposite end of the year.

Over 1,000 twiddlemuffs knitted to help residents living with dementia Over 1,000 twiddlemuffs have now been collected by Forest of Dean District Council to help people living with dementia in the district. The twiddlemuffs were handed out to local hospitals, groups, care homes and individuals across the district during Dementia Awareness Week in May to create conversations and relationships with individuals. The council’s community engagement team is delighted at how the community has got so involved and behind this campaign. Twiddlemuffs are a knitted hand muff with interesting bits and bobs like beads, zips and ribbons attached inside and outside. They have been designed and developed to provide simple stimulation for active hands, while promoting increased flexibility and brain stimulation. Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, who has developed the use of them within the hospital, says many

patients with dementia have found the twiddlemuff reassuring and comforting. Among those taking part in the district are avid knitters from Goode Court in Lydney (a sheltered housing complex), Roselle George, who has knitted 20 so far, and Iris Preece who knitted 10 twiddlemuffs.

Barbara Lilwall (far left) and her friends and family.

Barbara Lilwall from Newnham also took up the cause inviting her friends and family via Facebook to join her for a twiddlemuff knitting session. After reading the post, Barbara’s friend, Doris March, who had moved from Newnham to Churchdown twelve years ago, decided to drive down and join in. Barbara, who lost a close friend to dementia a year ago, said: “It feels good to be doing something which will really make a difference to someone living with dementia.”

Sam Chilton, aged 7, a pupil at Ellwood Primary School even learnt to knit so he could knit a twiddlemuff in memory of his grandfather who he lost because of dementia.

Lena Maller, one of the District Council’s Community Engagement Officers said: “There are so many lovely stories – too many to tell - about groups of people getting together to knit twiddlemuffs. It’s been really heartwarming and I’m meeting so many new people and groups, it’s been amazing. “We are so pleased and thankful to everyone who’s got involved. A big thank you to everyone!”

Finance Saving for Children What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management. Putting some of their pocket money away each week encourages good financial habits, and teaches children the mechanics and rewards of saving - why they might have to wait before they buy something, plus the benefits of gaining compound interest through long-term saving. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms. So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011:

Junior ISAs

Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015. Page 64

The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age. The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned.

NS&I Children’s Bonds

These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the

term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Once the 5-year term is complete, bonds can be rolled over for another term, up until the child is 16 years of age. They can be cashed in early, but doing so attracts a penalty of 90 days’ interest. As with the Junior ISA, the money belongs to the child rather than the parent. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest.

Children’s Savings Accounts These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice. Tax is paid at 20% on children’s savings accounts, but it is normally possible to reclaim the money using Form R40. Better still, use Form R85 to have the interest paid tax-free from the outset. These forms can be downloaded from the HM

Revenue and Customs website, or you can pick up an R85 form at the bank or building society holding the account. A note of caution about tax If parents give their child money which subsequently earns interest of more than £100 in a tax year, the money will be taxed as though it belonged to the parent. This rule isn’t applicable to Junior ISAs or Children’s Bonds, however. Once a child reaches the age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money.

with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a

There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one: • Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower

reduction of interest. Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund to a Junior ISA opens up the product to more people. If you asked a child which account they would prefer, it’s highly likely that they would choose whichever one offered a free gift. With this in mind, maybe the best solution is to open one account to keep them happy and another that provides a better rate of interest. https://www.gov.uk/juniorindividual-savings-accounts/ open-an-account http://www.nsandi.com/ childrens-bonds

Care Home Conundrum: Responding To A Relative’s Complaints by Kate McLelland When I visited my 92-year-old mother at her residential care home recently, she wasn’t in a good mood. Her purse was missing and she was convinced that the cleaners were to blame: “They’ve stolen it! And I had thirty pounds in there.” It wasn’t until she stood up, ready to accompany me to the manager’s office, that I realised she had been sitting on it all the time. It’s often hard to know what to do when someone who may be suffering from mild dementia or confusion complains about a care issue. Should you take their concern seriously or just put it down to their age and mental condition?

Better safe than sorry

Moira Wilson from Cumbria was worried when her elderly aunt kept insisting that a young male, carer – Jack - was bothering her.

“The home had a good reputation so I didn’t like to complain,” says Moira. “But to my great relief the manager told me that they had no male carers currently working there.” Moira’s decision to check out her aunt’s complaint – no matter how far-fetched it sounded – was undoubtedly the right course of action. Confusion in elderly people Page 66

can lead them to make false accusations but the same confusion also makes it easy for care workers to get away with poor standards of care and sometimes, actual abuse.

Sending out a signal

My mother – who is almost blind and has limited mobility – gets help with showering twice a week at her nursing home. When, on a number of occasions, she told me that she hadn’t been washed “Because the shower isn’t working”, I began to be suspicious. On some days it mysteriously refused to work, particularly when a certain carer was on duty. All it took was a friendly email followed by a brief chat with the manager to sort out the problem. Sometimes the very act of making an enquiry can signal to staff who are not pulling their weight that their actions are being monitored.

New legislation to combat abuse

Recently new legislation has been introduced in response to the Mid-Staffs and Winterbourne View abuse cases. The Care Act 2014 comes into force in two stages, between April 2015 and April 2016, providing a new statutory basis for safeguarding

vulnerable adults and making it easier to prosecute managers who have allowed an abusive culture to exist in their organisations. The Act also introduces a new, lower threshold for lodging a complaint with a local authority where abuse is suspected. An official enquiry can now be triggered if there is a “reasonable cause to suspect” abuse and this means that problems can be reported much earlier.

The right time to complain

Your elderly relative will inevitably have minor niggles about the care they are receiving but it’s important to keep listening. If you detect that an issue is causing real anxiety or distress, then you must act. If they are able to explain the problem, you should encourage and support them as they speak to the care supervisor or manager. If not, don’t be afraid to approach these people yourself: a good care home should welcome your feedback. Making a complaint is never easy, but it’s a small price to pay if it means that someone you love will receive better care and attention in future.

and The Hoax, together with exciting new prospects; The Juke Joints, Federal Charm and The Della Grants. It must also be mentioned that we are very excited that Robbie Blunt, none other than the guitarist from Robert Plant’s band, will be appearing on the Sunday.

We are always grateful to our sponsors whose donations help to support the festival. Cake and Bake Vanilla and Chocolate Panna Cotta This velvety smooth, vanilla flavoured Italian set cream is simple to make but tastes divine. For a less rich dessert replace half the double cream with full-fat milk.

Ingredients: • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips of lemon rind • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 12g sachet powdered gelatine • 50g good quality dark chocolate, finely grated • Chocolate dipped strawberries, to serve (see TIP)

Serves 4 Ready in 30 mins, plus cooling and setting time

Page 70

1. Place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat. 2. Meanwhile place 4 tbsp of boiling water in a small heatproof cup or jug and sprinkle over the powdered gelatine. Leave for a few minutes until spongy then stir until dissolved. If the gelatine doesn’t completely dissolve, heat in the microwave on Full Power for a few seconds or sit the cup or jug in a pan of gently simmering water and stir until completely clear. Leave to cool for 10 minutes. 3. Stir a little of the hot cream into the gelatine mixture then stir back into the rest of the cream. Leave the mixture to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and pour the mixture into four individual 150ml pudding basins. Place on a tray and chill in the fridge for 6 hours or overnight until set. 4.To serve, dip each pudding basin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds then turn out onto a serving plate. Sprinkle the grated chocolate over each panna cotta and decorate with a sprig of mint or lemon balm. Serve with the chocolate dipped strawberries.

TIP

To make the chocolate dipped strawberries, pick firm ripe strawberries and use a good quality dark chocolate (one with at least 50% cocoa solids). Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir until smooth. Holding each strawberry by the green calyx, dip into the melted chocolate then shake to allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the dipped strawberries onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper and leave in a cool place until the chocolate has set. Serve on day of dipping.

There’s Life in the “Old-Cog” Yet. Iain Betson suggests rock-oil* still rolls. I’m not convinced electric cars are all they are made out to be. I don’t believe the hype about “zero emissions” - that an electric car is somehow non-damaging to the environment because there’s no CO2 emitted. Well, unless it’s charged up with fairy-dust, where’s the electricity coming from? Over 75% of the UK’s electricity is fossil fuel generated and electric cars push their emissions down the energy generation chain and add to the load on the grid too. Then there’s the problem of limited range. Batteries are the Achilles heel of all electronics. Consider your phone as an example. Ten years ago, Nokia’s 6310 would go about a week between charges. But today’s

smartphones need a top-up pretty much daily. Battery technology still lags behind electronics. Consider the amount of energy stored in the petrol tank of an average saloon. It’s simply huge. That’s why the internal combustion engine has lasted so long and, with ongoing development, will continue. Within 5 years of the government introducing road tax based on CO2 emissions, manufacturers had introduced engines that produced the same power (or sometimes more) yet produced less CO2. Here’s another pointer to the efficiency of modern engines. Bentley’s L series engine has been produced since 1959. In that time, it has been continuously developed, to the point that the current version will run on the emissions of the original. Like it or not, the internal combustion engine will still keep us rolling for a while yet. *The word petroleum comes from the Latin petra, meaning ‘rock’ and oleum, meaning ‘oil’
