INSIDE...

Hello Reader, People often say time flies when you’re having fun and as we now reach halfway through 2015 we do wonder where the last 5 months have gone! Spring is about to finish and we will welcome British summertime with open arms – fingers crossed for a long hot summer for us to enjoy countless days out, BBQs and of course the odd trip to many of the Forest’s pubs and restaurants with beer gardens. Talking of pubs, it was great to see The Miner’s Arms in Whitecroft on BBC2’s Chefs on Trial, see who won on p36. Finally, a personal thank you to everyone who has donated money for the victims of the Nepalese earthquake to the Nepalese Restaurant Woolaston Inn in Lydney. They have raised nearly £4,000 so far. A recent auction at the Roadmaker Inn in Gorsley has raised another £5,796. Have a wonderful June.

Triangle Radio It’s a busy time here at Triangle Radio. We are currently planning a short term FM broadcast this summer and almost have decided on a date. Work has already started in the background for this, so if you fancy getting involved please email ryan@triangleradio.co.uk or message us on Facebook. We are also currently conducting our quarterly review of our programmes, so you may notice changes to our schedule from the 1st July. Each month we are going to showcase three of our volunteers so you can find out more about them. Here are this month’s three volunteers: Daren was inspired by the 208 legends of Luxembourg Radio in the 80’s and this set the scene for

Making A Pest Of Themselves by Pippa Greenwood They might be small but aphids - widely known as greenfly and blackfly - are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone. Greenfly and blackfly vary in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or kaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. They can breed rapidly and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring. The symptoms they cause include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphidPage 10

If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring. If you pinch out the aphid-encrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved.

blue tits, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius. Ladybirds (available from my website, www.pippagreenwood. com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once established they will start to breed and add to the natural ladybird population.

Another common one is the woolly aphid which attacks apple trees and is also often seen on ornamental Malus such as crab apples, pyracantha and cotoneaster. Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem.

There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully.

It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – the best you can do is to reduce their numbers. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as

infested plants. Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless but unattractive black ‘sooty moulds’. On roses there are several species of aphid which may attack, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long.

Forest Sensory Services (FSS) FSS is a registered charity for those with sensory loss based in Cinderford. Our aim is to be the first point of contact for local people experiencing sight and/ or hearing loss. We welcome people with hearing loss to our activities. We have a hearing loop in place for those who need to use it. We also re-tube Hearing Aids by prior appointment. The following activities are available -

• • • • • • •

Computer Tuition Lunch Club Book Club Social Craft/Pottery Macular Disease Falls Prevention

We have volunteers who have completed the My Guide Training scheme who are now in the position to act as Buddies for those who need help to get out and about. As a charity we need to raise over £60,000 each year. We try to achieve this by applying for Grants, Fundraising and Donations. Our major fundraising event this year is a Charity Dinner

on 27th June at the Speech House Hotel, Cinderford. Hosted by Baroness Jan Royall and with after dinner speaker Lord Chris Holmes of Richmond. Lord Holmes represented Great Britain at 4 Paralympics and won a total of nine gold, five silver and one bronze medal. There will also be a raffle, auction and dancing to end the evening. Tickets are £40, to find out more or to purchase a ticket please contact Jenny Green 01594 827711. Finance Saving for Children What are the Best Options? By Ann Haldon Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management. We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms. So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011:

Junior ISAs

Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015. The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although

parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child. Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age. The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned.

NS&I Children’s Bonds

These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term. The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue. Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest.

Children’s Savings Accounts

These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children. In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice. Once a child reaches the

age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money. There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one: • Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys. • Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest. Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances. The Junior ISA has proven to be very popular, and the new legislation regarding transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund to a Junior ISA opens up the product to more people. https://www.gov.uk/juniorindividual-savings-accounts/ open-an-account http://www.nsandi.com/ childrens-bonds

Auction Anecdote

I suppose one could assume that since we are an all female team at Smiths Auctions that would be the main reason we just love selling jewellery at the saleroom, however there are a lot of other positives to selling jewellery compared to some of the other items we handle. I guess that one of the best things about jewellery is that it tends to be valuable and therefore generates a good sale total as well as being exciting when it reaches high prices. But another big plus is it’s small size which makes it so easy to deal with compared to some of the heavier and more bulky items we sometimes sell.We can literally fit hundreds of pretty sparkly items of jewellery into just one or two small cabinets with ease and then of course it is lightweight and easy to pack and post after the sale. Jewellery is also inherently attractive and therefore makes the saleroom advertising and websites look more appealing and upmarket than selling collectable but ugly items which do not photograph well! Smiths April sale had a huge jewellery section including a large selection of antique jewellery which is very popular with trade buyers who might be shopping for specialist collectors who like Victorian cameos, jet or enamel for example. Our private buyers have a varied taste with many preferring modern jewellery but also a good selection who like antique jewellery since the reason they come to the saleroom ‘to shop’ is ‘that they like old things’. From a large consignment of antique jewellery an Edwardian platinum cluster ring with a cushion cut diamond within diamond surround seemed to tick all the boxes for many of our buyers both trade and private. On the auction day a trade buyer from the Sussex/Surrey border who had not even viewed the ring in person bought it for £1000 – bidding on the internet against a private buyer in the room. Smiths next antiques and collectables auction is on the 19th June and has a special section for pictures. PETS

Are Rabbits Really a Low-Profile Pet? As lovely as rabbits are, especially as a first pet, you may be surprised to know they can be just as costly and time-consuming to care for and dogs and cats. When you calculate the cost of a rabbit hutch, food, straw and a run, it quickly adds up, so here are some facts you might want to consider before giving in to the children’s wishes: • Your rabbit will need exercise as much as any other pet, and a hutch on its own simply isn’t big enough. You’ll need to buy a rabbit run of around 8’ x 4’ to allow your rabbit the exercise it needs. • Vets’ fees for regular checkups can be expensive, and aren’t covered by insurance. Vaccinations against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease will be needed. • Flystrike is a particular issue for rabbits. During warm weather they are prone to having flies lay eggs on their skin. These hatch into maggots, which if unnoticed, feed on the rabbit’s flesh causing serious skin issues. • Dental problems are common - up to 75% of household rabbits are diagnosed with dental disease according to Rabbit Awareness Week. • Neutering is recommended by vets, and again, is not covered by pet insurance. Bringing a rabbit inside the house means that you’ll need to supervise it carefully to make sure it doesn’t chew through cables and wires. Rabbits also require daily grooming, especially long-haired breeds, as hair balls can be a problem if they block the stomach. By Ann Haldon

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning and trying to curry favour with the young.

Quite a few middle-class breakfasts must have been ruined when the newspapers of 11th June 1965 were opened. For the news was truly shocking. The Beatles were to receive MBEs in the Birthday Honours List! It’s difficult at this distance – and almost impossible for people who weren’t around at the time – to realise what a big deal this was. And if anything it seems comical that so many retired colonels sent their medals back to the Palace in disgust. What blimps these outraged fuddy-duddies must have been, we think today; and the apocalyptic language with which they expressed their horror – the Beatles were “vulgar numbskulls”, snarled one; Britain would fall “even deeper into international ridicule and contempt”, howled another; and the word “debased” appeared over and over again – makes them seem even more so. As for the newly-elected Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who had put the Fab Four up for their gongs, he was vilified as subverting the honours system

But how wrong those criticisms were, for this was not an act of subversion, but of absorption. The Beatles had become hugely successful dollar earners, with nine US number one singles and four US number one albums to their credit so far, as well as the creation of an enormous American market for other British acts; and that made them part of the Establishment and entitled to all the honours that came with it. The Beatles themselves sensed this and seem to have been uneasy over it. John Lennon reportedly worried about being seen as a sell-out and had to be talked into accepting his MBE by Brian Epstein; and the Lovable Moptops famously tried to make a pantomime of their investiture that October, turning up in John’s psychedelic RollsRoyce, wearing unconventional suits, smoking a joint in the Palace loos (later and rather unconvincingly denied), and trying (and failing) to banter with the Queen. Four years later John confirmed that he had never been happy with the whole business when he returned his medal – without a trace of irony! – in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Vietnam and Biafran wars. So

perhaps it was the shocking headlines of 11th June 1965 and the events that followed that spurred the Beatles into escaping from the curse of light entertainment – of Saturday morning children’s TV shows, of guest slots on Lulu (or, worse, a show of their own), of Royal Command Performances, of touring unto exhaustion. Once “Help!” was finished later that year they put the three-minute love-songs (albeit the superior and beautifully crafted threeminute love-songs) of the first half of the career behind them and started exploring their talent in earnest. And then Brian Epstein died; and although his death was tragically untimely (and although he was no showbiz monster to compare with the likes of Larry Parnes or Simon Cowell) it did finally complete the process that had started at Buckingham palace of freeing the Beatles from the light entertainment treadmill that had ruined so many of their great contemporaries – notably Dusty Springfield – and left them with nothing to do but create. So perhaps, ultimately, we have Harold Wilson to thank for The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.

Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Damien Hirst (7th), Elizabeth Hurley (10th), and Garry Pallister (30th). Cake and botox to you all!

Woolaston prepares for whole week of Carnival events Last year’s ground-breaking Woolaston Carnival was such a success with its week of events leading up to Carnival day, that the organisers are repeating the formula this year. Andy Morgan-Watts, the easily recognisable Hawaiian shirted co-ordinator of the event is enthusiastic about the week of activities leading up to the Carnival and Wild West Show on July 4th. “There will be lots for folk to enjoy and participate in.” says Andy, “but people need time to prepare. For example - there will be a photographic exhibition featuring three categories –

Woolaston Village, From Land to Mouth (any aspect of food from production through to eating) and Abstract (capturing abstract forms in our surroundings). We’d like to encourage anyone with a camera to have a go and show your best results. It’s all a bit of fun – nothing too serious” he adds. Included for the first time on Friday 3rd July will be an information day at the Memorial Hall called “We Can Help You” when a collection of agencies will be on hand all day to give advice on all sorts of issues. Also for the first time will be a Flower Festival in St Andrews

(Woolaston) and the Methodist Chapel in Netherend. More details will be announced shortly. In the meantime here are some events which you might like to prepare for and have a go at: 1) Tues 30th June & Wed 1st July - Art Exhibition at Memorial Hall – Contact Alex on 01594 529664. 2) Thurs 2nd July. - Photographic Exhibition at Memorial Hall Contact Viv on 01594 529057. 3) Sat 4th July – Woolaston Classic (vehicles) – Contact Andy on 01594 529381. Busy Show Season for Howle Hill Nursery

Peter Dowle and his Howle Hill Nursery landscape gardening team are currently embracing their busy show season – constructing gardens at the RHS Malvern Spring Garden Show and the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, coupled with working alongside the RHS to dress the Severn Hall at Malvern ready to host the stars of the show, Raymond Blanc and Gregg Wallace.

Peter commented “We have had all hands on deck the last few weeks to make both operations logistically possible and have Page 26

received arctic lorry loads of plants from Italy and Holland for the respective jobs.” He added, “The Howle Hill Nursery Acer stand at Malvern is one to look out for, a truly stunning range from 2 litre pots to 200 litre mammoth specimens.” The Chelsea garden is designed by James Basson for the French cosmetics giant L’Occitane and Peter and team proudly continue the working relationship with both parties, having designed and delivered gold for L’Occitane in 2012 for the ‘L’Occitane Immortelle Garden’ followed by Gold and best in category alongside James Basson in 2013 for the garden entitled ‘After the Fire’. Peters’ involvement with the Malvern Show has grown in recent years, from delivering the Gold and Best in Show garden ‘Where East meets

West’ in 2013 to now also actively working alongside the RHS to visually enhance the impact of the show and the show grounds with displays, signage and site dressing. Howle Hill Nursery is open for visitors Monday – Saturday (9am–5.30pm), located between Ross-on-Wye and Ruardean (HR9 5SP) and is fully stocked for the new season with a stunning range, including the South Wests’ leading range of Japanese Maples and the on-site offices offering full design services as well as construction, planting and maintenance teams.

Home & Interiors The Kings of Bling

The French kings of the 17th and 18th centuries had enormous influence on aristocratic interiors. For elegance, luxury and splendour, look no further than the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, writes Katherine Sorrell The year: 1681. The place: the royal court in France. And, according to King Louis XIV who had assumed power two years earlier: ‘There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces and their precious furniture.’ The king was inspired to adapt a small hunting lodge just outside Paris, extend it, and fill it with splendid decoration and furnishings, all in order to glorify his monarchy. Its style was the most up-to-date possible, a new fashion known as Baroque - dramatically dazzling and opulent, epitomised by jewellike colours, large furniture in bulbous shapes, trompe l’oeil paintwork and glittering silver, gold and crystal. The new palace was called Versailles. The interior of Versailles was filled with furniture made in specialist workshops by the finest native and foreign artisans. Pieces were carved and gilded in heavy, scrolling Page 28

By Katherine Sorrell

shapes, upholstered with velvet and brocade, and inlaid with exotic materials such as marble, silver, ivory, lapis lazuli and agate. There were fabrics woven with silver or gold thread, lavish rugs and walls hung with tapestries or covered in marble or mirror. Perhaps most extreme of all was the specially commissioned furniture and lighting made of silver. It was utterly magnificent. Fashions are forever changing however, and by the turn of the 18th century Louis XIV was urging a ‘graceful and airy’ style on his granddaughter-in-law. After his death in 1715 the court moved to Paris, where a less ceremonial lifestyle developed, with smaller rooms and lighter furniture. Known as Rococo, it was frivolous and exuberant, all delicate curves and asymmetrical lines while, overall, homes were arranged to be comfortable rather than impressive, colours and patterns soft and feminine. The typical Rococo home featured elaborate plasterwork and carved, painted and gilded wooden panels, walls hung with imported silk or hand-painted wallpapers, all reflected in ornamental mirrors. Furniture often had a curving front and – most typically of all – cabriole legs. Also known as Louis Quinze style, Rococo was at its height

in France in the 1740s. Within a decade or so, however, a move towards simplicity, combined with a revival of classical forms gave rise to another new look. In England, it was known as neo-classical; in France, Louis Seize. By the time Louis XVI ascended the throne in 1774 this style was dominant, and he and his wife Marie Antoinette were keen patrons. While luxury and elegance were still key, somewhat plainer, even geometric designs replaced elaborate decorations, while straight lines and symmetry took over from curves and arabesques. Key pieces included chairs with horseshoe-shaped backs and tapering, column-shaped legs, striped fabrics and wallpapers, and elaborate window treatments featuring swags and tails. Furniture was grouped sociably rather than placed around the edges of the room, and even featured comfortable, sprung-cushioned upholstery. Louise Seize style could be summed up by two words: expensive simplicity. But it was not to last. In 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. Two years later, the French revolutionary government was established, the Directory, lending its name to the final phase of neoclassicism: Directoire style, sparse, simple and notable for its lack of ornamentation. It was the end of the Louis era, but these remarkable styles have influenced and inspired us ever since. Summer Solstice Summer Solstice (sometimes also referred to as Midsummer) falls between June 21st-22nd, and celebrates the longest day and shortest night of the year, the sun reaching its highest point in the northern hemisphere, and the very pinnacle of summer-time. Midsummer is celebrated with a variety of different traditions and celebrations around the world – and indeed around our own country, with parties commonly held from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cornish coast, and in particular at Stonehenge, where tens of thousands gather every year for an all-day festival, watching the sun rise early on 21st June and celebrating the longest day with everything from quiet observations to full-on festivities. The lighting of bonfires often forms a big part of the culture, celebrating the burning light of the sun and mirroring it, a tradition stemming from pagan and Celtic roots. In addition to having huge Pagan significance, the solstice is relevant too to some branches of Buddhism and those who practice Yoga, in which Sun Salutations often play an important role and the sun is something very much worthy of reverence. The solstice can be explained by the angle of the earth’s axis, the tilt of which is the reason we experience our four seasons each year. When the axis tilts towards the sun during the summer months we know here in the UK, winter is of course in the southern hemisphere, rotating entirely by the time we reach the opposite end of the year.

Over 1,000 twiddlemuffs knitted to help residents living with dementia Over 1,000 twiddlemuffs have now been collected by Forest of Dean District Council to help people living with dementia in the district. The twiddlemuffs were handed out to local hospitals, groups, care homes and individuals across the district during Dementia Awareness Week in May to create conversations and relationships with individuals. The council’s community engagement team is delighted at how the community has got so involved and behind this campaign. Twiddlemuffs are a knitted hand muff with interesting bits and bobs like beads, zips and ribbons attached inside and outside. They have been designed and developed to provide simple stimulation for active hands, while promoting increased flexibility and brain stimulation. Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, who has developed the use of them within the hospital, says many

patients with dementia have found the twiddlemuff reassuring and comforting. Among those taking part in the district are avid knitters from Goode Court in Lydney (a sheltered housing complex), Roselle George, who has knitted 20 so far, and Iris Preece who knitted 10 twiddlemuffs.

Barbara Lilwall (far left) and her friends and family.

Barbara Lilwall from Newnham also took up the cause inviting her friends and family via Facebook to join her for a twiddlemuff knitting session. After reading the post, Barbara’s friend, Doris March, who had moved from Newnham to Churchdown twelve years ago, decided to drive down and join in. Barbara, who lost a close friend to dementia a year ago, said: “It feels good to be doing something which will really make a difference to someone living with dementia.”

Sam Chilton, aged 7, a pupil at Ellwood Primary School even learnt to knit so he could knit a twiddlemuff in memory of his grandfather who he lost because of dementia. Lena Maller, one of the District

Sam Chilton aged 7 and his Mum Sally Chilton. Sam knitted his twiddle muff in memory of his grandfather who he lost because of dementia. Council’s Community Engagement Officers said: “There are so many lovely stories – too many to tell - about groups of people getting together to knit twiddlemuffs. It’s been really heart-warming and I’m meeting so many new people and groups, it’s been amazing. “We are so pleased and thankful to everyone who’s got involved. A big thank you to everyone!”

Forest of Dean Rallies to Help Victims of the recent earthquakes in nepal We were all saddened to hear of the tragic news of the two devastating earthquakes in Nepal. Gloucestershire and Ross on Wye have four Nepalese restaurants, here is a report from Bagpin Pun from the Woolaston Inn in the Forest of Dean who has been raising much needed funds: 1. We organised a Charity Event at the Woolaston on the 8th of May to raise relief funds for the victims of the earthquake. The total amount raised from the evening and so far from the collection box as of 18th May is £2486.00. Massive thanks to all donors of the raffle prizes and auctions. Particular thanks to Steve & Wendy and Ian & Maria Brewer for co-

ordinating the fundraising events.. 2. Members and colleagues of my regiment (39 Signal Regiment) in Bristol and Bath have raised £431.25 through several events, especially through organising a cake sale on Tuesday evening19th May. 3. The collection at the Woolaston Inn is still ongoing. The buckets will be opened and counted at the end of May. The amount will be verified by a member of the public. More donations are still coming through. 4. I am shortly going to visit Lakers School where they have also collected monies and materials for the cause. On the 7th of June I will be travelling to Nepal. I will personally take all collections there and deliver them to the victims directly. I will provide all the details from Nepal in due course.

I am humbled by the generosity and support given and shown by all friends and colleagues in order to provide reliefs to the victims of this terrible natural disaster that hit Nepal so badly. There is a need to continue to raise much needed funds in order to provide rehabilitation and reconstruction of those shattered lives. It will take many years to come so I look forward to have continious support towards it...

27th June - 5th July 2015

This year we begin an exciting new venture as walk leaders from the past team up with walkers in the Forest of Dean to create the MonDean Walking Festival. Our partners are - Chepstow Walkers are Welcome, Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Tour Guides, Ramblers (Forest of Dean), Lower Wye Ramblers and Monmouth Walkers are Welcome. This will allow us to offer walks across the county of Monmouth from the Black Mountains through the Monnow and Usk valleys to the Wye Valley and to pick up the link on its opposite bank with the beautiful Forest of Dean - capturing the industrial and geographical links

between the areas as well as their stunning scenery. On our first weekend you may wish to climb the three peaks around Abergavenny in one day - the Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid, while our final weekend sees an opportunity to follow the Three Castles Walk, Skenfrith, Whitecastle and Grosmont - again all in one day. As well as these we offer a photography walk exploring the pastoral scenery of Monmouthshire; another leading us on a discovery of the Forest of Dean section of the Gloucestershire Way from Parkend, deep in the Forest, to May Hill with its fabulous views over many counties; delving into

Forest of Dean Motorcycle Club Treasure Hunt A circular route of approximately 50 miles beginning and ending at Xerox Social Club, provisionally scheduled for Sunday July 12th. Motorcyles or groups of motorcycles will be released onto the route at 5 minute intervals in a clockwise direction. Cars will be released onto the route at 5 minute intervals in an anticlockwise direction. Each direction will come with turn by turn directions along with 20 questions identical for each direction. The average speed quoted for this type of event is 15 miles per hour so about a

3hour run. Each direction/question sheet will be given out for a ÂŁ10 donation with a ÂŁ100 prize for a fully correct question sheet if there is only one. If more than one correct sheet is returned then only one will be drawn from those to receive the prize. The start time envisaged is10.30am. The Xerox Social Club facilities will be open and a BBQ will be done for those returning, if requested. As cancer seems to have touched many within the club I suggest that any proceeds are split 3 ways - money will go to two nationally know charities (Sue

Cake and Bake Vanilla and Chocolate Panna Cotta This velvety smooth, vanilla flavoured Italian set cream is simple to make but tastes divine. For a less rich dessert replace half the double cream with full-fat milk.

Ingredients: • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips of lemon rind • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 12g sachet powdered gelatine • 50g good quality dark chocolate, finely grated • Chocolate dipped strawberries, to serve (see TIP)

Serves 4 Ready in 30 mins, plus cooling and setting time

1. Place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat. 2. Meanwhile place 4 tbsp of boiling water in a small heatproof cup or jug and sprinkle over the powdered gelatine. Leave for a few minutes until spongy then stir until dissolved. If the gelatine doesn’t completely dissolve, heat in the microwave on Full Power for a few seconds or sit the cup or jug in a pan of gently simmering water and stir until completely clear. Leave to cool for 10 minutes. 3. Stir a little of the hot cream into the gelatine mixture then stir back into the rest of the cream. Leave the mixture to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and pour the mixture into four individual 150ml pudding basins. Place on a tray and chill in the fridge for 6 hours or overnight until set. 4.To serve, dip each pudding basin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds then turn out onto a serving plate. Sprinkle the grated chocolate over each panna cotta and decorate with a sprig of mint or lemon balm. Serve with the chocolate dipped strawberries.

TIP

To make the chocolate dipped strawberries, pick firm ripe strawberries and use a good quality dark chocolate (one with at least 50% cocoa solids). Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir until smooth. Holding each strawberry by the green calyx, dip into the melted chocolate then shake to allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the dipped strawberries onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper and leave in a cool place until the chocolate has set. Serve on day of dipping.
