The Brief
The Concept
SamplePhonics is a recently established digital mastering studio which creates and sells digital sample packs of sound mixes for use in modern commercial music making. They require a new identity and related media for the set-up and dayto-day running of this new enterprise.
The identity needed to be simple in form and structure so as to be appropriate for its context and audience (which includes small logo display on sample-collection internet sites) and therefore legible at both small and larger scales. The design of the identity is based around the form and shape of a 12 vinyl record and it’s revolving motion, thereby defining the link between the old and the new forms of music and sounds sampling.

Delivery & Promotion As an extension of the brief the client asked for the design of a range covers for a new set digital sample packs, to be advertised and distributed across various internet sites including iTunes, Sounds To Sample and LoopMasters. These sample covers had to be bright and bold to stand out from an already saturated market, and the decision was made to follow the original concept of 12” vinyl records and design the covers to emulate the multi-patterned paper LP covers of the 50’s and 60’s.
Context This has provided a fresh and interesting set of covers that with a uniqueness that stands apart from the highly-charged, heavily digitised and complicated covers that are the traits of competitors’ sample packs.
The context of the identity has greatly informed its design. It sits within a range of other branded logos and brands so it was requisite that with shape, form and colour it be simple to spot on a web page. The names and titles of the sample packs have also been chosen specifically to be Also included are web advertising banners, which uncomplicated and thereby stand out from the keep to the stripped-down aesthetic with minimal pack. information, though they will not be confusing as they will feature on websites related to the product and feature links to sample packs.

Delivery In direct consequence of the original concept of old LP covers, the digital sample pack covers have been designed in tandem with full scale 12 album covers. These vinyl records can be ordered and used as part of a DJ’s vinyl sampling set-up.

Range There are 5 sample pack designs, each one incorporating repeating patterns of geometric forms. The colours are specifically selected pantone swatches, and have multi-layered transparency to blend these colours together. The design reflects the change in media that has affected the music industry, bringing the old (geometric forms, simple design) and merging it with the new (digital delivery, digital design).
The central vinyl sticker is influenced by the old Polydor LP stickers, each colour coded to match a specific sample pack. The design reflects the pack number using two devices; first, a linear edging where the number of lines references the number of the pack; second, a small counting measure of circular forms.

Range For the physical sample packs, there are also a number of limited edition, hand screen printed cases available. These provide the customer with a tangible and unique product that can be kept and collected with others, though as a business it is important to generate income, of which this would be a means to increase profit with a more expensive product. It also keeps in line with the concept, and replicates the collectable element of purchasing vinyl records.
