INSITE Standing on the Shoulders of Giants Us Brits don’t do Thanksgiving, which is a shame. Not only does that mean we have one less excuse for turkeyeating excess, it also means that we don’t have a time to actually step back and consider just how fortunate most of us actually are. We should be thankful that we work in an industry that no longer injures, maims or kills its workers with the reckless abandon that it once did. We should be thankful that working conditions today bear no resemblance to those endured by our predecessors as little as 20 or 30 years ago. And above all, we should be thankful for the determination, dedication and foresight of our forebears that helped create an industry that is safer, healthier and more respected than ever before. We are, each of us, standing on the shoulders of giants; giants that disregarded perceived wisdoms and methodologies to create new and safer methods of work. Such leaps would not have been easy; and they certainly would not have been cheap. The adoption of ongoing training comes at enormous cost and often appears to show little return. Making the switch from wrecking ball to high reach excavator required an equally costly leap of faith. Embracing systems of self-regulation and inspection was not required by law and also came at a financial cost that could not be directly recouped. But all of these things were done not because they were cheap and not because they were easy. They were done because they were right. For each of these things, we owe the industry’s forebears a double debt. We owe them a debt of gratitude because it is their far-sighted wisdom that ensures that we each go home safe at the end of each working day; that the industry has a clear and well-defined career path that allows hard-working and determined individuals to rise through its ranks; that the industry enjoys a level of respect and admiration that would have been unimaginable just a few short decades ago. Moreover, the industry owes those wise and selfless innovators of yesteryear a debt to maintain their legacy and to continue their work, regardless of the cost. Those of us that have inherited this industry have a duty to continue to question accepted wisdom; to embrace and develop new technology; to forge new paths and to make bold leaps of our own; to let no envelope go unpushed. The industry that will be inherited by our sons and daughters and our grandsons and granddaughters will be born from the seeds we sow today. It is our duty as an industry to provide them with an industry for which they too can be thankful.

Results achieved so far have exceeded our initial estimates and we are continually improving tonnages of metals for export and import. The team is working incredibly hard with existing customers as well as exporting to new customers in destinations all over the world,” says Thomas

Biffa looks North Biffa, the UK’s leading waste management provider, has invested £250,000 into a new service to help improve the Yorkshire demolition and construction industry’s waste compliance. The firm has launched a dedicated Construction & Demolition (C&D) offering in Yorkshire, allowing firms to order sameday skip delivery, with a guarantee of legally compliant collection and disposal. With nearly 23,000 construction firms registered in Yorkshire, the region was chosen as an ideal launch area, before the offering is rolled out nationwide. The latest statistics from the Environment Agency show more than 200 new illegal waste sites containing construction debris were discovered nationwide between March 2017 and March 2018 – a huge 70 percent increase from the 119 found merely four years earlier. Construction and demolition firms are a key target for unlicensed waste disposal companies, as the high tonnage of debris needing swift removal offers easy business for waste criminals. Yet many contractors are unaware these businesses are unlicensed, leaving them uncompliant and liable for fines, or even a prison

10

sentence, should their waste be found dumped in an unlicensed and illegal site. According to the Environment Agency, the number of illegal waste sites across the UK has risen from 1,425 to 1,485 between March 2017 and March 2018. In an attempt to reduce levels across all sectors, government agency Defra has already launched an in-depth review into UK waste crime, due to be released later this year. “Yorkshire’s construction industry is thriving - a key reason why we chose to invest in launching this initiative here first. While construction activity is at a peak in Yorkshire, unfortunately waste criminals are keen to take advantage of unsuspecting firms who simply want to dispose of their waste as quickly as possible, trusting it to be handled correctly,” says Anthony Holley, regional general manager at Biffa. “Waste crime undermines all the work we do in managing the UK’s refuse and we want to do all we can to prevent it. By investing in a dedicated C&D offering under the trusted Biffa name, we aim to provide the construction industry with an accessible solution which supports their compliancy, along with Defra and Yorkshire councils’ efforts to reduce waste crime across the region.”

Safeguarding safety postBrexit

The British Safety Council has reiterated its demand that the UK’s withdrawal from the EU must not in any way erode the progress made in the UK over the last four decades on workplace health, safety and welfare standards, together with the protection of worker’s rights and product safety.

The adoption of EU directives into the UK legislative framework has been instrumental in the continual improvement in these areas, resulting in dramatic reductions in workplace fatalities and injuries, as well as enhanced recognition of occupational health issues. “The government has repeatedly stated that there are safeguards for employment protections in the backstop – the legally binding Withdrawal Agreement’s arrangements that will be triggered and hold sway until all parties agree to a comprehensive trade policy. However, in Parliament, in answer to some probing questions, the Attorney General Geoffrey Cox admitted on Monday 3 December that these clauses are ‘not enforceable’. The politicians, who brought

12

us the assertion that ‘health and safety is a burden on business’ and a commitment to destroy health and safety culture, are now going back on their previous declaration that employment rights and environmental protections are safeguarded under their deal due to the presence of non-regression clauses,” says Lawrence Waterman, Chairman of the British Safety Council. “It has now been admitted that these clauses are not enforceable internationally by the EU institutions or by the arbitration mechanisms under the Withdrawal Agreement, claiming that this gave the UK ‘regulatory flexibility’ during the backstop. This reinforces the British Safety Council’s view that we shall need to watch developments closely to protect hard-won worker protections. We call on other champions of health and safety, such as RoSPA and IOSH, to join with us and others to ensure that our high standards in workplace health and safety are defended whatever the outcome of the shambolic Brexit process.”

Call for Screening Is it time for the construction industry to adopt alcohol and drugs screening legislation? Suzannah Robin, alcohol and drug safety expert at AlcoDigital, explains why implementing testing policies and procedures will help to improve workplace safety.

Alcohol and drugs misuse is becoming something of a thorny issue for the UK construction sector. For reasons that aren’t fully understood, the industry has been identified as ‘higher risk’ in terms of drug use, and more than a third of construction workers say they have witnessed a colleague under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to a survey carried out by risk assessors protecting. co.uk on employees from a range of sectors, nearly a third admitted to using drugs at work. A significant number claimed to be ‘under the influence’ every working day. In fact, many of those admitting to taking drugs were using cannabis or other illegal narcotics. Majority Untested Despite the availability and increasing use of screening

tests, around 65 percent of workers say they have never been tested, while a quarter said they had been tired at work because of the effects of drugs or alcohol. Construction is the most dangerous industry to work within in the UK. There were 38 fatalities in the past year, according to provisional figures issued by the Health and Safety Executive. Falls from a height were the most common cause of death, followed by being struck by moving vehicles or objects. In terms of non-fatal injuries, there are 58,000 incidents each year, and there are 82,000 work-related ill-health cases. Of these ill-health cases, 62 percent

18

were caused by musculoskeletal disorders and 25 percent were caused by stress, depression and anxiety. This is significant as these conditions have been linked with the use of drugs and alcohol. While there is no data available to establish if any of these incidents were related to drugs or alcohol, it seems likely that they may have played a part in a proportion of cases. So what is the law for workplace testing in construction? Testing is legislated for in certain sectors, such as the aviation, rail and

stuff shipping industries. But while most larger companies now have a policy in place to deal with drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace, the construction industry is not legally required to enforce testing. However, employers do have a duty of care to maintain a safe working environment under the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act. If methods for detecting misuse are not implemented and an accident occurs, employers could face hefty fines or even be prosecuted. In the highrisk construction industry, it’s therefore vital that a robust policy is introduced. Breath Testing For high associated risk industries, it’s recommended that drugs and alcohol testing is carried out on a regular basis. For alcohol testing, a range of professional police-grade breathalysers are available for screening workers. Alcohol interlocks are also available, which prevent equipment or machinery from starting until a negative breath test has been given. For many years, urine tests have been used as a reliable and cost-effective form of drug testing, providing instant results. This is useful for random testing and can serve as a deterrent to employees. However, urine tests often fail to reveal if an individual has consumed drugs in the last two hours. Blood testing is the most accurate method of establishing what drugs are in a person’s system – but the medical training and laboratory analysis required mean it’s impractical for regular

For this reason, oral fluid collection has been established as the most practical method for drug-testing. With a far simpler collection process and a window of detection that mimics that of blood testing, this is the method of choice for UK Police roadside testing. Over the last decade, huge progress has been made in terms of tackling illegal drug use and alcohol abuse in the workplace. Now it’s time for the construction industry to address the issues head-on and direct their attention towards putting in place policies and practices to make drug and alcohol screening compulsory across the industry.

The capability of an explosive cutting tool has been dramatically demonstrated during the sinking of a Portuguese naval warship to create an artificial reef.

The corvette Afonso Cerqueira, which was retired from service in 2015, was sunk 450 metres off the coast of Madeira. SABREX, an explosive cutting charge, was used to cut 16 x 1 square metre holes out of the ship’s hull under the waterline. She sank in less than 100 seconds. “We needed to rapidly and very precisely cut holes big enough to allow in the water, but without weakening or damaging any of the superstructure,” says Chris Smith of Chemring Energetics UK (CEUK) which manufactures SABREX. “The idea is for the ship to remain intact and upright to help improve biodiversity and develop underwater tourism.”

24

The company worked closely with the regional government of Madeira, the Portuguese Navy and contractors Tecnovia Madeira on the project. SABREX is supplied globally by CEUK from its site in Ardeer on Scotland’s west coast, where in 1871 Alfred Nobel - the inventor of dynamite and founder of the Nobel Prize – built the world’s largest explosives factory. “Its use is pretty well limited to the user’s imagination. By delivering a fine, fast and accurate shape charge jet, SABREX is a cutting tool that can be used for anything that needs cutting quickly, accurately and precisely,” Smith explains. “The project in Madeira demonstrates

SABREX has excellent underwater capabilities with very minimal preparation.” The specialist explosive used on the Afonso Cerqueira, which will become a haven for marine wildlife as well as a destination for diving enthusiasts, was put in place by a team of Portuguese Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal divers. They first used SABREX™ two years ago when another corvette – the General Pereira d’Eça – was sunk to form another artificial reef. SABREX can be used in depths of 12 metres with no adverse effect on its performance and has been used to sever 25

mm of steel plate at a depth of 25 metres. It is easily formed to fit complex target shapes and designed to cut some of the toughest man-made and natural materials. It is supplied in lengths of four metres in

six different sizes, allowing the engineer to minimise the Net Explosive Quantity (NEQ) needed to sever the target. A single length of SABREX, for example, can be used to sever an I-Beam.

Fight the Power Erith Contractors underscores its power station capabilities by completing complex works at Bradwell Power Station Erith Contractors has successfully completed the removal of 91 springs and hanger rods within the Reactor structures at Bradwell Power Station. This highly complex project required an extremely niche skillset, as well as exceptional levels of safety precautions, planning, management and supervision. Erith has undertaken work at Bradwell Power Station for nearly a decade as a supply chain partner to Magnox. During this time, the company has become accustomed to the risks and challenges involved whilst in this high-risk environment. The springs and rod hangers presented new challenges to the multi discipline project team, not least of which was the tremendous amount of stored energy each spring possessed. In addition to this, Erith also had to work in radiological conditions within confined spaces to complete the work where there were significant levels of asbestos. These constraints combined to form a significant de-planting challenge.

ON SITE The planning involved to carry out the bulk of the work proved essential to the success of this project. Working with its in-house design team - Swanton Consulting - and client, Magnox, Erith’s asbestos and demolition departments developed bespoke Safe Systems of Work documents for spring restraint system installation, trial cuts, fire tests, hot cutting of the springs, drop rods and tiebars. All risks were managed using the ERICPD (Eliminate, Reduce, Isolate, Control, PPE, Discipline) risk control hierarchy, ensuring that mitigating the risk was the primary aim before seeking measures to minimise them.

Each spring was restrained with a proprietary tensioned system, designed in-house and manufactured by a specialist engineering facility, to ensure the

Finally, the restraints were carefully de-tensioned to prevent uncontrolled release. The 91 springs were cut over the course of a two-month programme after a sixmonth planning period. The final spring was cut on the 2nd of October, signifying the end of this phase of work without a single health and safety event, achieving the project aim of ‘Target Zero’. The completion of the works was deemed a huge success for both Erith and Magnox, further demonstrating the company’s ability to undertake high-risk and highcomplexity projects to an outstanding standard.

McGee’s Park Royal Ascent McGee Group is working on the Park Royal project for the HS2 Skanska, Costain, Strabag (SCS) joint venture team undertaking large-scale demolition of a range of industrial and office buildings on a section of the Bethune Road industrial estate that will be excavated to become the Victoria Road Crossover Box.

The company was looking for a dedicated, smaller high reach machine to undertake demolition works in this kind of space-restricted inner-city location. Liebherr came up with

a bespoke solution based on an R 926 Compact excavator base machine. Site limitations precluded the use of large machinery at this stage of the project and it was down to

ON SITE metre high reach built on an R 926 Compact base machine. Using the base of an R 926 Compact, the manufacturer removed the standard excavator front end and replaced it with a two-piece boom and dipper capable of giving a pin height of 12 metres and of running a work tool with a weight of up to 2.5 tonnes. The boom configuration comprises a 7.8 metre main boom with a 5.0 metre dipper stick. An underslung dipper ram allows the machine to be reduced in height for transport and for accessing tight locations if and when required. A full range of additional hydraulic services

has also been included to allow for a variety of attachment options to be fully utilised. A full ROPS and FOPS demolition cage has been specifically fabricated and tested for the R 926, which has a slightly shorter cab than the standard counterweight machines. The R 926 Compact base machine weighs up to 28 tonnes depending on the specification. McGee Group’s adapted version weighs in excess of 29 tonnes thanks to the heavy-duty construction. Fitted with a fuel efficient and emissions compliant 175 HP diesel engine, the excavator is ideally suited to working in city centre locations.

The cab interior is as standard apart from the addition of a James Fisher Prolec system that has been designed to manage the Liebherr’s working envelope with both a visual and audible signal alerting the operator if they reach the safe working limit. A steel framed industrial warehouse of one and a half stories with brick cladding was the first building being cleared on the site. Equipped with a Demarec shear, the R 926 was used for a multitude of jobs including dismantling the steel framed structure and the secondary processing of steel once it was on the floor.

Mees Facilitates Charity Relocation Mees Demolition Group have started work on demolition works at the PSS (People Shaped Support) site on Seel Street in Liverpool city centre.

The Liverpool city centre charity is moving to make way for the Elliott Groups £36 million extension to the Wolstenholme Square development. The new building is set to include 205 apartments, including 69 twobed homes, as well as a pool and a spa. There will also be commercial units on the ground floor. PSS, which celebrates its centenary in 2019, might not be a name that is familiar to everyone. But the organisation helped develop some of the best known names in community support including Age Concern,

38

the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Legal Aid. PSS sits alongside Local Government and NHS services plugging the gaps and providing ‘on the ground’ support for a wide array of people, recognising when individuals are in need and helping them find new and practical ways to get the most out of life. The relocation of PSS is designed to enhance the support the charity provides. The modern-style warehouse that has housed PSS for over 20 years is no longer fit for purpose, so we will be completely clearing the site to make way for a new 11-storey development,” says

ON SITE Thomas Mee of Mees Demolition Group. “We are witnessing a lot of positive changes to the Seel St and Wolstenhome Square areas of the city centre. We are seeing a real resurgence in city centre developments for both residential and commercial use, with a lot of grot spots being removed. Mees Demolition Group is currently involved in several sites that will change the face of Liverpool.” The PSS site will be a bolt on to the Wolstenholme Square project which will see a mixed use development comprising 447 residential apartments, located in the heart of L1. A PSS spokesperson said earlier in the year: “It’s an exciting time for us at PSS. We’ve been working at our Seel Street office for over 20 years now, and although it’s served us well during that time, the building is getting pretty old and tired, and is costing us a lot of money to repair and maintain.” MTKBRE P2.qxp_MUTLEY fp ad 2 12/07/2018 16:20 Page 1

O’Keefe demolished the entire structure down to the basement slab, installing temporary steelwork to provide lateral support to the basement excavation. Piling specialist Murphy, sub-contracted to O’Keefe, then had to install numerous concrete piles, using a continuous-flight auger rig, to support the new multi-storey building that will eventually occupy the site. “We had to break out the

basement slab in sections to allow Murphy to install the piles while the demolition work progressed,” continues Chetrit. “Basically we just had to work around each other, so organisation had to be spot-on to avoid problems and ensure Health and Safety.” Because of the need to install piles through the basement slab, and also construct a base to support the tower crane that will

48

assist construction of the new building, it was decided to break out and remove the original basement slab entirely. A new slab will now be cast on top of the pile caps. Conveying plant and materials to and from the site has been a major challenge. “We can’t get an artic truck in there so the Komatsu excavator had to be off-loaded in the street and tracked into the building,” Chetrit

excavation and removal of contaminated soils plus dust suppression across an extensive network of internal haul roads. A comprehensive and extensive program of hazardous material removal was undertaken including the removal of asbestos dust from fourteen separate 5,000 square metres warehouses and the cleaning and removal of a number of hazardous chemical tanks and underground storage facilities. The former use of the site as a military complex predating World War 2 meant that the

A mobile workshop for plant and equipment was established on site for all servicing and maintenance requirements and operated by Liberty Industrial’s mechanics, boiler makers and fitters. Liberty Industrial developed and implemented a comprehensive environmental management program. Environmental controls included sediment fencing, tree exclusion zones, surface water run-off capture and containment, contaminated soil stockpile areas, and the

presence of unexpected finds including potential unexploded ordinance created a complex and significant risk as the works progressed. Liberty Industrial demolished approximately three hundred individual buildings and large structural warehouses including slabs and footings exceeding 300,000 square metres in total. The below ground service infrastructure demolition and reinstatement program started with a known extent of approximately 20 km of services infrastructure. Liberty Industrial’s project team also encountered over 200 additional unexpected finds of asbestos lagged and asbestos cement pipes; all of which was

removed by Liberty Industrial’s in-house asbestos removal team. Over 150,000 tonnes of contaminated soil was excavated and remediated utilising various techniques including sorting and segregation, bioremediation, asbestos hen-pecking and haulage and disposal. As works progressed a further 30,000 tonnes of asbestos impacted soil that was encountered un-expectedly. This large quantity of unexpected finds required Liberty Industrial to accelerate works in order to

Liberty Industrial’s project team responded to significant increases in scope with efficiency and professionalism, developing a program of work that broke the site into priority areas to enable early handover for commencement of construction works. Cawarden displays Sheffield steel Derby-based contractor deploys brand new Komatsu high reach to tackle complex and challenging office block demolition in the midst of Sheffield City centre. Mark Anthony reports.

Sometimes it is as if the gods of demolition have conspired to make certain projects more challenging than they really need to be. Case in point, the demolition of a former HSBC bank building in the middle of Sheffield City centre. The four-storey building itself is the type of structure that are bread and butter for experienced companies like

62

Cawarden Demolition. But that block is located right in the heart of the city centre with all the noise, dust, vibration and security challenges that brings with it. It is also located on a major thoroughfare which stirs some complex traffic management into the mix. And, as if that weren’t challenging enough, the site is also home to an historic Grade II-listed furnace tower from Sheffield’s industrial

wider significance of the site and it is essential that these measures are firmly secured and implemented.”

Despite all these challenges, Cawarden is taking the project in its stride while giving a maiden outing to the latest addition to its equipment fleet: a Komatsu PC490 high reach that is spearheading the project.

Historic England did not oppose the original planning application, stating that while the development “will cause some harm to the heritage significance of the site, the development will also secure the long term conservation and management of the scheduled monument,” the organisation says. “The application includes positive proposals to better reveal the

Obvious Choice Cawarden took delivery of the new 50 tonne Komatsu PC490 in November and the machine was immediately dispatched to the site in Sheffield. Featuring a Komatsu high reach boom and a 2.1 tonne Mantovanibenne CR20R attachment supplied by INMALO, the unit is a direct replacement for the company’s previous Komatsu high reach.

Ancient Monument The former HSBC building on Hoyle Street is being demolished to make way for a new tower block comprising 247 residential units to accommodate more than 650 students and young professionals. The site is bounded by Doncaster Street, Ellis Street, Meadow Street and Hoyle Street and has a prominent position immediately adjacent to the Ring Road which is the main gateway into the city from the north. The four-storey HSBC office building, which has been vacant since 2016, is situated on the southern half of the site with the remaining land predominantly used as surface car parking and soft landscaping. The surface car parking is currently being used as a temporary public car park. This surface parking surrounds the historic furnace tower which dates back to the site’s former use of the site as a steelworks. According to archaeologists, the furnace was designed for the manufacture of blister steel, the original raw material for crucible steel. Built in the mid-nineteenth century and remaining in use until 1952, it takes the form of a conical tower with coped flanking walls on two sides and is the sole survivor of a characteristic industrial building

ON SITE “Our previous Komatsu high reach was incredibly reliable and MarubeniKomatsu took great care of it for us,” explains Cawarden managing director William Crooks. “When we decided the time was right to update the machine, Komatsu was the obvious choice.” With an operating height of 28 metres, the former HSBC office block is well within the capabilities of the new Komatsu machine which is driven by experienced operator Colin Williams. Boommounted dust suppression minimises dust while Williams’ methodical

process keeps both noise and vibration to a minimum on this potentially demanding inner city site. A temporary road closure may yet be required to allow the safe demolition of the building’s Hoyle Street frontage. But under the direction of William Crooks’ son Oliver and contract manager Malcolm Lowes, the project remains on schedule for completion early in the New Year. KIT TALK and how to carry out routine servicing procedures. Most importantly trainees will leave ready to work in an industry that the CITB estimates needs to recruit and train 158,000 workers between 2018 and 2022– 31,600 annually – simply to keep up with the current levels of demand. Flannery boasts a roster of some of the biggest projects and contractors in the UK and the firm is investing in the next generation to ensure it is ready to supply the growing demand for highly skilled plant operatives to support the opportunities arising from HS2 and a number of other high value projects. Tthe national Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline shows £182.2 billion worth of projects anticipated to start between 2018 and 2021. “There is so much going on in Birmingham at the moment. With HS2 ramping up, many of our

clients being based there, and the swathe of live construction sites across the City, it makes sense to make it our training home. We are ambitious for growth, and we believe that we can find the next generation of hardworking talent in a city that has the youngest demographic in Western Europe and is well connected to the surrounding regions,” says Patrick Flannery, CEO of Flannery Plant Hire. “All being well, we should see this make a real positive impact for a lasting legacy for the Midlands – training the next generation of plant operatives, giving people new skills, and improving the lives of them and their families”. Flannery currently has a 3,000 strong fleet of plant and equipment spread across six depots nationwide; those joining their team could find themselves learning on anything from a small one-tonne excavators through to nighty-tonne articulated

70

dumpers by the time they have completed their training. With Flannery’s wide breadth of plant in operation across the UK’s construction industry, trainees can expect to learn to operate telehandlers, dump trucks, forward tipping dumpers, and dozers as part of their exciting new career. “This investment drives our sustainable credentials; a modern fleet in excess of 3000 units, over 50-delivery vehicles and 80 fitters covering sites across the UK 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year,” Patrick Flannery concludes. “As our respected manufacturers, including Caterpillar, Hitachi, Komatsu and JCB continue to develop technology, Flannery continues to innovate, finding ways to turn data into meaningful analysis allowing customers to make hire decisions that deliver the most effective, reliable solution for them.”

Having celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016, the current team of employees is headed by Michael’s three sons, Mick, David and Dermot. To have the flexibility to manage large-scale projects, Shannon Valley has a large fleet of construction machinery at its disposal. It currently operates

a wide range of around 100 excavators (from one to 80 tonnes), as well as wheel loaders, various trucks, bulldozers, and crushing and screening equipment (among others). Michael purchased his first Hitachi excavator (a UH063) in 1989 and now there are approximately 50 Zaxis excavators and ZW wheel loaders in the fleet. “We have

72

bought more than a dozen machines this year, including the ZX48U-5 and ZX33U-5 mini, ZX225USLC-6 and ZX250LC-6 medium, and ZX690LCH-6 large excavators,” says David English. “Dublin is buoyant and we have other site development work being carried out in the south of the country. This is a highly competitive market, in which every penny counts and the deadlines are always tight. We

KIT TALK have continued to buy Hitachi machines, because the whole range is strong, particularly the large excavators for their durability and reliability. Some of our operators prefer Hitachi excavators, because they are smoother to operate and more precise than other brands. We have also found that Hitachi wheel loaders are trouble-free and have developed well over the years. Hitachi equipment is easy to maintain and we have an excellent working relationship with our local dealer TBF Thompson.

Rammer embraces telematics Rammer has launched an updated and upgraded Excellence Line range of hydraulic hammers. A key feature of the Excellence Line is Rammer’s purpose-developed RD3 remote monitoring device - a first of its kind on hammers. RD3 uses the MyFleet Telematics service to track and monitor fleet equipment usage remotely. This cloudbased system enables the hammers to be viewed and monitored in Google maps. The main benefits of the system are that it enables owners and managers of fleets to know exactly where their equipment is, and how it is being used. This facilitates better business decisions through providing improved security and optimised fleet location while enabling enhanced application knowledge and operator education, all accomplished via GPS data. As well as RD3, the Excellence Line reflects Rammer’s customer focused outlook through a host of other new features. Lower tool bushing rotating and replacement on the field increases lifetime of lower tool bushing, which contributes to reduced operating costs. This is further reflected through the use of two tool retaining pins that increase the lifetime of the tool and retaining pins, as well as increases the lifetime of the tool bushings. An IBP on/off selector is fitted to the valve body enabling easy field adjustments (2577 and up). Separate greasing channels from the valve body to the upper and lower tool bushing further increases tool and tool bushings lifetime.

PlantworX to Focus on Simulation PlantworX, the UK’s largest working construction machinery exhibition in 2019, (11th -13th June at the East of England Arena, Peterborough) will host the UK’s first fully interactive construction Simulation Zone, which will promote virtual interactive training to highlight the very latest technology in construction and how it is changing the way we work. The Simulation Zone at PlantworX will comprise six state-of the-art simulators that will replicate a ‘real working construction site’ - but in a virtual world. Each of the simulators will be linked and will represent an individual construction machine – an excavator, wheel loader, tower crane, dozer or an articulated dump truck – as examples.

together with height and slew restrictors and other highly advanced technologies that are being used in today’s construction processes.

Visitors to the zone will be invited to work together on the simulators in the virtual world to complete tasks on a construction site. Spectators will be offered oculus rift headsets to join the virtual world as bystanders and offer encouragement and support to the participants. Participants can expect to experience GPS machine control with the latest attachments

Immersive training experts will be on hand to guide each participant through the virtual world of simulation technology. Companies and contractors who would like to investigate this type of training are also invited to experience what the zone has to offer. No previous experience is necessary.

A number of 80-inch screens and a huge event screen will project live feeds from the simulators and their operators to create a major visual and audible impact.

The PlantworX team is

78

anticipating that the ‘Simulation Zone’ will be one of the highlights of the show, located in the Indoor Arena. Sponsorship opportunities are available should PlantworX exhibitors wish to be involved. Why use simulator training? “Training plant operators is not an easy task – this is due several factors including the transportation costs and logistics of getting a large piece of construction kit to a safe environment to enable the training of a potential plant operator,” says industry expert Dale Hawkins. “Then there is the safety aspect of the process – where traditionally a training instructor would be hanging off the side of a moving machine offering instruction to the operator. The safety

KIT TALK standards of today would not allow this, therefore the trainee operator is tasked with learning to use the controls in the cab unaided – this could be the most dangerous time of the training program – and could cause untold damage to both man and machine. Also, this method of training only offers a one on one training schedule which elevates the cost and availability of such a course. These new innovations in simulation offer a very cost-effective safe classroom based training solution where we are able to bring multiple candidates in to a classroom and teach the basics to these operators so when they do get the chance to sit in the real

machine they are already familiar with the controls of the machine making the training a much safer and a more speedy process, thus allowing more candidates to be trained in a shorter time frame and a lower cost.” GPS Machine Control Training “With simulation digital machine we are able to mount ‘real to life’ machinery attachments with in-cab controls to the simulator, this enables us to also bring large numbers of experienced operators in to a classroom and teach them the more technical side of plant operation with a special focus on operator aids like GPS machine control, rail specification height and slew restriction and any other highly advanced technologies which are being used in today’s construction processes,” Hawkins explains.

Operator Profiling “An operator may have a lot of experience in operating heavy plant machinery, but he/she may not be efficient - which when calculated over a year could cost the company a considerable amount in fuel and site wastage. We have used simulation to help teach these drivers how to become more efficient - for example how to set the machine up for a dig with minimum rotations of the machine - the shortest distances making sure Remote Controlled Demolition Robots you use full Breithornstrasse 10, D-8185 München, Germany Phone: +49 (0)89-427 205 50 buckets info@toptec-germany.de • www.toptec-germany.de planning of the

site roads and haul routes. This is also extended to the site management team for the planning process when ordering plant machinery for the site,” Hawkins continues. On Track “Another reason we use simulation is there is a national short-fall of machinery operators in the UK, especially with major projects such as Hinkley Point C and HS2 using large numbers of operators. The plant machinery sectors are not pushed in the careers paths of school leavers, most are pushed towards well-known trades such as plumbing and engineering, when in fact there is more work and a very similar rate of pay to become a plant operators,” Hawkins concludes. “We run a program called ‘On -Track’ where we take simulators into schools and encourage young people to try the machines and offer them information on routes to take if they would like a career path in construction. We also work with some major plant hire companies who offer apprenticeships.”

KIT TALK “Moving from the smaller L150H to the L260H brings many benefits to our production here at Partridge Hall,” explains Quarry Manager, Damian Towse. “With its 7m³ rehandling bucket,

we can now load eight-wheeled tippers in just two passes and articulated trailers in three, which means the machine is able to dispatch vehicles far quicker and therefore free up more time for

rehandling material around the quarry. We’ve also seen gains on the overall fuel consumption per tonne moved. Furthermore, we can now manage our activities in the quarry without the need for a dumptruck which, again, has provided us with a significant improvement on all round productivity and cost saving.” The L260H features a 13-litre stage-IV final engine developing 309 kW in a relatively low rpm range of between 1,100 and 1,200 rpm. The machine also benefits from Volvo designed and manufactured driveline components including Optishift with torque converter lock-up and reverse-by-braking feature – all designed to offer considerable fuel savings each shift. Fuel savings are further enhanced by the Volvo Eco-pedal encouraging the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve. Specifically for Ashcourt, the new L260H has been equipped with a large capacity 7.0 m³ rehandling bucket with a straight edge enabling the machine to easily handle ten tonnes of crushed chalk every pass. The machine also benefits from an enhanced full turn tipping load of 24 tonnes, thanks to the addition of Goodyear 29.5R25 GP4D tyres and other features on the new L260H include CDC (Comfort Drive Control), Volvo’s optional ride control or boom suspension system, an automatic lubrication system and an RDS Alpha 100 weigh loader. Safety features including all round visibility aids such as sensor vision, blue strobes, white noise alarm and additional LED working lights that are also included in the machine’s specification. KIT TALK added to Ashcourt’s fleet for its civils and bulk earthmoving division and come in the guise of a forty-tonne EC380E and the larger fifty-tonne EC480E in standard heavy-duty backacter configuration. Both machines are powered by a Volvo StageIV compliant 13-litre engine developing 228 and 283 kW respectively, offering the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large, roomy interior with plenty of legroom and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings besides providing visibility to the operator from the rear and sideview cameras. Since acquiring a large recycling facility located at Foster Street in Hull three years ago, Ashcourt Group has made significant investments at the premises including a new, state-of-theart, concrete batching plant. This has allowed the company to greatly expand the area set aside for recycling a diverse range of materials including inert building waste, aggregates and waste wood which is processed and recycled for biomass. In order to process and re-handle this material through the plant, Ashcourt has added a Volvo EW240E MHE (materials handler) specifically rigged for the task in hand, with a hydraulically elevating operator’s compartment to aid the safe loading of highsided bulkers. The new arrival joins an EC220E similarly rigged that was supplied two years ago.

Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 125 kW, the EW240E has been supplied with a 6.5 metre straight boom and 4.0 metre sorting arm with a Kinshoffer selector grab for the business-end of the machine. The EW240E material handler provides a maximum forward reach of 10 metres and a maximum height of 12 metres measured at the attachment pin. With an optimum 800L capacity grab the machine has a generous 3.7 tonnes lifting capacity at maximum reach across carriage with its outriggers down. To facilitate grab rotation, the machine is equipped with x3 hydraulics along with x1 hammer/shear hydraulics and hose rupture valves fitted as standard. Uniquely, the EW240E supplied to Ashcourt is the first in the UK to feature CDC control (Comfort Drive Control) which has eliminated the need for a steering wheel (and thus the steering column). By taking this option, the operator’s forward field of vision is dramatically improved for loading material into high sided bulkers when the cab is elevated to its full height. The Ashcourt Group has a range of operating divisions which include civil engineering, house building, purpose-built luxury student accommodation, aggregates and recycling, highway construction and maintenance and more recently, suppliers of bulk fuels, all of which is underpinned by a growing transport fleet that includes over 90 predominantly Volvo branded FH low loaders, bulkers, skip wagons, tankers, sweepers and Volvo FMX eightwheeler tippers.

KIT TALK Compact Completes Line-up Yanmar Construction Equipment Europe (CEE) has announced the roll-out of its V65 wheel loader across the UK and Ireland. From December, the new model will be available to order through approved dealers nationwide. Designed to excel in tight job sites, the V65 completes Yanmar’s comprehensive wheel loader portfolio. Measuring just 2,160 mm tall and 1,700 mm

wide (with bucket), the loader’s compact dimensions guarantee excellent manoeuvrability, a class-leading turning radius and 40° steering angle.

92

Rigid articulation allows the bucket to approach the load in a straight line, while an oscillating rear axle keeps all four wheels in contact with the ground –

KIT TALK even when working on uneven terrain. Parallel kinematics allows the operator to lift a load without adjusting the stroke angle, which maximises productivity and optimises work cycles. A powerful Deutz L04 Stage IIIA/ Tier 4 Interim-compliant diesel engine delivers 36.4 kW power at 2,300 RPM, resulting in 42 kN breakout force, 2,920 kg tipping load (at full turn) and 1,650 kg lifting capacity. High-pressure hydrostatic drive technology ensures smooth power delivery, while independent working hydraulics allows hitch attachments to be changed quickly. The V65 further benefits from permanent all-wheel drive and automatic self-locking differentials on the front and rear axles, which provide enhanced traction when

travelling or loading. The clever addition of a brake inching pedal allows the driver to slow down travel speed while retaining engine RPM for working hydraulic control – improving cycle times and eliminating wheel spin.

loader range, the V65 has been specifically designed to excel in tight job sites and densely built-up areas. With numerous features to maximise productivity, the new model delivers excellent lifting, slewing and carrying capability.

The ROPS/FOPS-approved cabin has been designed with fatigue-free operation in mind, combining vibration and noise dampening technologies with hydraulic seat suspension, adjustable steering wheel and ergonomic controls. A comprehensive range of addon equipment packages help to further adapt the wheel loader to specific job requirements.

“Alongside ensuring classleading performance, however, we’ve worked hard to ensure a safe and comfortable user experience. From ergonomic equipment layout and easyaccess service points, to excellent visibility from the cab, the V65 is perfect for dl aily use.

Commenting on the launch, Andreas Hactergal, sales and marketing director at Yanmar CEE, said: “As the most compact unit in our six-model wheel

94

“As with each model in the Yanmar CEE portfolio, the V65 uses premium components to ensure maximum quality and reliability. From materials use to hose routing, intricate design aims to enhance service life and reduce downtime.”

KIT TALK Have Your Say on Dumpers Following a number of serious incidents involving forward-tipping site dumpers, key factors of which include overturns and individuals being struck by a dumper, an Industry Forum for Dumpers was formed back in late 2016 with an aim to avoid all future incidents.

Through a number of meetings, Forum agreed that a total of seven principles would be used as a basis of an industry initiative action plan including the production of a safe use publication, on which the Construction Planthire Association) CPA agreed to produce comprehensive guidance through the Strategic Forum Plant Safety Group.

The dumper development group was formed to start work on the good practice guide in early 2018. Members of the group include those from hirers and owners, clients, contractors and users, manufacturers and importers and the Health and Safety Executive. Four sub-groups were formed to focus on specific subject areas including exclusion/

KIT TALK exclusion zones; dumper specifications; machine selection and compatibility; and ground conditions. One of the main messages of the safe use guidance is that the use of a dumper should not be an automatic choice. The correct identification of the most appropriate machine should

be the first step followed by effective planning, supervision and use of competent people if dumpers are to be used safely. Unfortunately, some of the large number of dumpers in use are operated incorrectly or put into unsafe situations, often resulting in accidents and incidents which sadly cause serious injuries and death.

The use of dumpers fitted with a cab is becoming common for which the guidance outlines some of the issues and considerations that need to be made in terms of allowing an operator to remain seated during the loading process. The development of this good practice guide has drawn on existing work that has already been undertaken by the Industry Forum from which a new section was inserted that highlights the causes and consequences of accidents, based on case studies derived from publicly-available safety alerts and those investigated by the Health and Safety Executive. The draft document is now available to be downloaded for public comment, providing an opportunity for others to comment on the content before the document is formally launched. The closing date for comments is set for Friday 11th January 2019. All comments received will be reviewed by the group with the amendments and additions made accordingly. This should allow the final release of the document by the Easter period of 2019. The Plant Safety Group for Dumpers are keen to release the guidance at the earliest opportunity to mitigate further incidents but stress that with rapid technical and operational developments occurring with dumpers, that the guidance may be subject to continual future updates. Cat Gets Appy Caterpillar has launched what it claims to be the industry’s first mobile app designed to allow customers who spend their time in a truck, at the job site and on-the-go to take advantage of equipment telematics data. The new Cat App delivers simplified, streamlined data directly to mobile devices, helping customers monitor machine location and health, react faster to fault codes and maximise uptime.

The culmination of a targeted voice-of-customer programme, the new Cat App is optimised for contractors who need to track critical machine operating data from the field. “App development included 150

customers and dealers from around the world to learn what they considered most important from their telematics data,” says Fred Rio, director of digital and technology for Caterpillar Construction Industries. “The vast majority of the feedback, regardless of brand fell into three customer challenges: tracking machine hours and location, receiving equipment fault codes, and managing maintenance without being tied to the computer back at the office.” This new mobile equipment management tool gives customers an easy way to monitor their entire fleet, request parts and service, and connect with their Cat dealer from the work site. The exact location of all equipment tracked by the app is displayed on the mobile device, along with the machine’s operating hours, health and utilisation data. It enables operations to get the most from their equipment by moving an under-utilised asset to precisely where it is needed most. Customisable push notifications alert Cat App users of machine operating condition, even if they don’t check into the app every day. Upcoming planned service indicators, based on machine operating hours, are sent to the user, so service can be scheduled for when it doesn’t impact production. Fault codes, such as engine alerts, provide warnings of critical

The core business has always been built on working with customers and partners to manufacture and distribute new and innovative products for sale. However, based on increased demand from new and existing customers, over the last 12 months we’ve strategically established a new hire division enabling customers to have a greater choice of products and the way in which they use them. We’re conscious that the market is becoming more and more competitive in our core industry sectors and to enable us to be at the front of the pack we need not only to offer the best products, but at the most competitive prices. We also need to offer a variety of different ways for customers to use our products. Not only can customers come to us and purchase or hire our products, but we’ve introduced a unique financing facility that enables our customers to make large stock purchases spreading the cost over a three to five-year period. This is great for any rental company looking to create revenue from our products with very little initial outlay or risk. As we all know cashflow can be key to the success of any business. In the last six months we have invested over £200,000 in new products and equipment for the business with an expected £100,000 to be spent before Christmas, ready for projects lined up in the new year. We’re also about to open a new c10,000 sq. ft hire depot in Bedfordshire, servicing the East Anglia, home counties and London areas. We have some fantastic plans for the next 12-24 months and hope we can continue to support our loyal customers and provide the great service we’re renowned for. We also look to create some great relationships with new customers and bring them into the Elite family. Our key philosophy is to listen and respond to our customers’ needs. With our extensive industry knowledge and expertise, we will provide innovative, high quality solutions, with an emphasis on the latest technology, maximizing performance, ease of use and safety, while also saving time and money. We believe in “Building Strong Foundations Together”.

MAKING OUR MARK ON THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

ONE STEP AT A TIME

ADVERTORIAL What the eyes don’t see, the lungs are choking over With 93% of our world’s children breathing toxic air every day, and with hundreds of thousands of children dying each year due to respiratory infections, what is this telling us about the sustainability of a quality global workforce?

construction and demolition contractors. We also provide specialist temperature and humidity control to renovation and remedial works for the comfort of workers and for the stabilising of building materials.

A recent survey by CCS (Considerate Constructors Scheme) reveals that out of 84% of UK construction workers recognising that air pollution is a current issue on sites, 64% feel that the industry is not doing enough to address it.

For civil engineering projects involving tunnels, culverts, shafts and mines, we specify and design critical monitoring and ventilation solutions for personnel health and pollution control.

However, it’s more than statistics, it’s an obligation. Nobody and nothing should be suffering because of poor air quality on site when it can be dealt with so simply. It’s all about protecting workers’ health and increasing productivity.

The most important thing is that we take time to understand the challenges you are faced with and we listen to what you are saying. By working with the HSE and other industry professionals we offer simple and effective solutions for combating health and air quality issues on site. Our extensive range of ventilation and air quality control equipment includes: ventilation fans, extraction fans, diesel particulate filters, air scrubbers, dust extractors, jet misters, electric and oil heating equipment, boilers, air conditioners, chillers, evaporative coolers, cooling fans, refrigerant and desiccant drying equipment.

Our focus is on maintaining sustainable and safe working environments by: • real-time monitoring of airborne pollutants including diesel particulates • dealing with dust and fumes at source • preventing ingress or egress of pollutants with pressurised ventilation • relieving fresh air deprivation in confined working spaces by forced air ventilation • relieving heat stress and exhaustion with air cooling and ventilation

Additionally, by providing real-time evidence with our air quality monitoring equipment for diesel particulates, dust and gases, you can satisfy yourself and the inspectorate that you are doing what is required to keep within the regulations and in the best interests of your business.
