INSITE Exciting Times Carillion has gone to the wall; the curse of Brexit is hanging over the UK economy like the sword of Damocles; and every utterance from the US President appears determined to push us closer to the edge of nuclear Armageddon. And yet, at the time of writing, the UK construction industry has just posted a creditable monthly new contract awards total that once again demonstrates the resilience of the sector. Indeed, with the first month of 2018 under its belt, the construction – and, by association, the demolition – industry has every right to feel positive. That feeling of positivity is equally evident at Demolition News Towers. Our Directory and Yearbook proved to be our biggest and most popular to date; our planner now adorns the walls of demolition site offices up and down the country; and our new forward-looking fiction book – Demolition 2051 – is going out the despatch doors at Amazon faster than the proverbial hotcakes. As if that wasn’t enough to leave us all feeling warm and fuzzy, this issue marks the beginning of the official countdown to the first-ever British Demolition Awards. As you will read on Page 24, these awards have been developed specifically to shine a light on many corners of the industry that have previously been overlooked by more established awards. The British Demolition Awards does not require membership of a trade association; it does not require a big spend on advertising to qualify; and it will be judged independently by hand-picked individuals that bring with them a huge amount of experience and expertise but who have no specific axe to grind. Or, to put it another way, if you’re doing demolition work in the UK, then there is every possibility that you could land a trophy. You can read about the awards categories on Page 00 and you will be able to enter as many or as few categories as you see fit by the time you read this. We sincerely hope that you’re willing and able to take part. And from everyone at Demolition News Towers, we wish you every success in these inaugural awards. May the best man, woman, demolition professional win!

The Fuel Conundrum A cleaner and more environmentally-friendly fuel is on the wish list of just about every demolition contractor keen to enhance their green credentials. And the solution may have been under their nose all along. Mark Anthony reports. Demolition contractors, like their counterparts in construction and agriculture, are caught in a diesel conundrum. Pretty much all their equipment runs on diesel; diesel is widely available; and generations of fitters and mechanics know instinctively how a diesel engine works. On the

flip-side, however, diesel is dirty and is, as a result, coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators, environmentalists and clients alike. But there is an alternative. It is an alternative that does not require the replacement of the engine;

stuff does not require the retrofitting of additional filters or the use of costly additives; and does not require the use of solar panels, wind turbines or the processing of animal waste. In fact, the alternative is merely a cleaner form of diesel. And it is one that has been a part of the fuel supply industry’s extensive armoury for decades.

Coming of Age

In layman’s terms, Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) is precisely as the name suggests – natural gas converted into a liquid form and refined to produce a cleaner fuel that can act as a “drop-in” and direct replacement for regular diesel. This process creates a fuel that – according to distributor Certas Energy – produces 40 percent less NOx emissions and an impressive 90 percent less particulate emissions. Those credentials would be enough to satisfy even the greenest environmentalists; but the advantages of GTL fuel do not end there. “GTL is a cleaner fuel all round. It is biodegradable and in the event of a spill will disperse safely and harmlessly within about six weeks,” says Certas Energy’s Brian Worrall. “It produces less smell, can extend engine maintenance schedules, offers engine longevity benefits and has significantly better cold-start properties than regular diesel. Users can also expect to see a slight reduction in fuel consumption.”

We will make GTL available as customer demand dictates,” says Certas’ Alex Wolfe. “The UK Government is very aware of the proven benefits of GTL and they have been very receptive. We expect to see the Government encouraging its wider use by dictating its use or by setting even greater emissions restrictions on certain larger project tenders.”

Worrall reports that GTL has been around since the Second World War but believes it has finally come of age. “GTL has been around for decades, but it is now coming into its own thanks to its environmental benefits,” he says.

Made by Shell

Along with the cost of labour and insurance, fuel costs are one of the biggest burdens upon demolition and construction companies. And Certas Energy admits that its GTL fuel carries with it a price premium of “a few pence per litre”.

Push and Pull

As the UK’s largest fuel distributor, Certas Energy already has the infrastructure in place to make GTL as widely available as demand dictates. However, the company says it is initially targeting customers in the south east which still accounts for the lion’s share of UK construction and demolition activity.

However, the company is adamant that this is more than offset by the advantages of using the cleaner, greener fuel. “By using GTL, demolition and construction companies might be able to work in low emission areas where a traditional diesel would be forbidden,” Brian Worrall insists. “If you also factor in the improvements in fuel consumption and engine longevity, there is actually very little to choose between regular diesel and GTL in terms of cost.”

The company also says that it is expecting a demand pull from customers seeking to enhance their environmental credentials or that are working in recognised ow emission zones; and a push from Government seeking to make its urban areas cleaner and greener.

Perhaps the only lasting obstacle standing in the way of the wider adoption of GTL is its possible impact upon engine and equipment warranties. But even here, Certas and the fuel maker Shell have a solution.

“We have 140 depots in the UK and more than 1,000 drivers delivering fuel to our customers.

stuff produced a list of all the manufacturers that allow GTL to be used without invalidating any warranties, and that list is growing all the time.”

What is GTL Fuel?

Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) fuel is part of the “paraffinic fuels” group. They are synthetically manufactured and can be used as a drop-in fuel for diesel engines. Because the fuels are synthetic, the manufacturing process produces more consistent and uniform molecules compared to conventional crude oil refining.

“Shell has made a huge investment in ensuring that GTL satisfies the warranty requirements of a huge number of major equipment and vehicle manufacturers,” Alex Wolfe explains. “We have

Paraffinic fuels therefore have improved combustion properties inside standard diesel engines which help reduce emissions of air pollutants. They are also free of unwanted components such as sulphur, metals, and aromatics, making them non-toxic and less harmful to the environment. The European Standardisation body CEN published the final specification for Paraffinic fuels, EN15940, in mid-2016, paving the way for legislators and manufacturers to specifically refer to those alternative fuels in legislation and handbooks. Keltbray’s Good Vibrations Keltbray is nearing the completion of rolling out a new system, Curatec, to all of its demolition and civil engineering sites, to help keep operators’ exposure to vibration equipment within safe limits. While the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations were introduced in 2005, there are still an estimated two million people in the UK who are exposed to levels of vibration above the recommended limits. This puts them at risk of developing Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, known as HAVS or white finger; a condition which is on the increase. HAVS is a serious and debilitating condition that effects the blood vessels in the hand and arm, eventually resulting in irreversible damage if uncontrolled or monitored ineffectively. After evaluating a number of systems to help monitor more accurately

stuff its staff’s use of hand-held or hand guided powered machines, such as concrete breakers, grinders, disc cutters, hammer drills; chipping hammers and many other tools, Keltbray carried out a trial of two different systems at Chelsea Barracks and Knightsbridge: “Around 20 people at each site trialled each system for a two-week period. This was followed up with a workforce engagement evaluation,” says HSQE Advisor, Jane Wathall. “On the back of the trials and the durability, sturdiness and easy upkeep features, we decided to procure the Curotec system.”

“Data from the monitor is collated on a weekly basis, examined by HSQE to ensure we comply with regulations, and the records are handed over to our Human Resources department for safe keeping,” Wathall adds. Workforce Engagement Manager, Sam Taylor, has welcomed the move: “I developed HAVS after working in demolition for more than 20 years. It means that my fingers often tingle and feel numb, and that my hands hurt most days, especially in winter. Luckily, I’ve since been able to change my job role to one that prevents my condition from getting worse, but nowadays, I wear gloves wherever practical and take prescribed medication,” Taylor concludes. “The Curo makes it much easier to protect yourself, and I would encourage everyone to make sure they use it to avoid my experience.”

Curotec works in the form of a small personalised monitor, ‘Curo’, no bigger than a computer mouse, which clips onto the vibrating tool and records each operator’s trigger time exposure to vibration. A traffic light system then advises the user of their exposure threshold, and when the red light illuminates, it warns the operator that they have reached their maximum daily vibration limit.

On the Rise JCB shop floor employees have returned to work to a New Year pay rise of 3.9 percent and order books at their strongest in the company’s history. The 2018 increase, which is linked to November 2017’s Retail Price Index (RPI), is part of a three year wage deal and took effect from January 1st. It follows a £500 Christmas bonus paid to all of JCB’s 5,500 UK employees. Over the past 12 months JCB has recruited more than 1,200 people at its 11 UK factories in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and

Wales and handed permanent contracts to 150 agency employees – with more to follow this year. In addition, JCB has increased its purchasing spend globally to more than £2 billion a year and in the past 12 months spending with the company’s 2,500 UK suppliers has risen by 13% compared to 2016. This came as the company launched 46 new products. JCB has this week gone into production with a new and innovative range of site dumpers at its World HQ in Staffordshire in a move which will create around 70 new jobs over the next 12 months. “The industry in which we operate is doing very well at the moment, which is not only good news for JCB, it’s good news for our region and good news for Britain,2 says JCB Chairman Lord Bamford.

“Our spending with UK suppliers has increased substantially over the past year and we are already off to a very strong start in 2018 with a very healthy order bank in place. In my view there is every reason to be optimistic about the future and in particular the future of the British economy. With unemployment at its lowest level for more than 40 years, we face some challenges with recruitment but that is a great challenge to have to overcome and a very positive position for the UK to find itself in.” The pay increase follows acceptance in 2016 by GMB members of a three year deal. It affects around 3,200 shop floor employees at JCB’s Staffordshire plants in Rocester, Uttoxeter, Cheadle, Rugeley and its factories in Wrexham and Foston, Derbyshire. Chief Executive Officer Graeme Macdonald said: “The long-term pay deal agreed last year gave us the stability we needed to plan and has delivered a robust pay rise for JCB’s shop floor employees. The outlook for 2018 is positive with markets all over the world in exceptionally good shape.” GMB Works Convenor Gordon Richardson said: “2017 was a good year for the company which has generated more job security for GMB members and we welcome the pay rise which was agreed as part of the three year deal.”

Get Protected The sudden if not entirely unexpected demise of Carillion could have a ma jor impact on many UK demolition companies. With fears rising that other blue chip and household name main contractors might be similarly vulnerable, Phil Morrison, Head of Construction and Partner at Shulmans LLP looks at how specialist and sub-contractors might protect themselves against employer insolvency. find themselves running short of cash before a project is completed. To avoid such a situation, it is vital that contractors take provisions within the building contract to protect payment, which could include: • Building in shortened payment periods • Suggesting an escrow account • Creating a project bank account • Weighted stage payments If the employer becomes insolvent, any retention monies held by the employer may be difficult to recover. Most contracts will state that the retention is not held in escrow. In some cases, an employer may agree not to deduct a retention from payments to the contractor in exchange for the contractor procuring a retention bond in favour of the employer. Typically in the UK, a retention bond will be an on-demand bond. The building contract should specifically permit the contractor to terminate its employment on employer insolvency. This is important because insolvency is not automatically a breach of contract in common law.

With the recent news of construction giant Carillion entering into liquidation, many contractors are looking at ways in which to protect themselves against employer insolvency and the measures contractors can take to mitigate the risks to their businesses when negotiating the terms of a contract and during the construction phase of a development.

The definition of insolvency in the building contract should include all possible varieties under English law. However, note that many rights to terminate a contract in the event of insolvency are reciprocal, so by arguing for a wide definition of insolvency for the employer, the contractor will be subjecting itself to the same regime.

A common occurrence with contractors is that recent developments show employers have not priced projects correctly. This has led to employers receiving tenders at higher sums than funders expected. As a result, they often

Rights should be conditional on payment by the employer. A contractor proposes provisions that suspend the employer’s rights to copy and use the design documents if the employer fails to pay the contractor in accordance with the building contract. In the UK, ‘pay when paid’ provisions in construction contracts are unenforceable, except to the extent that they apply only in a case of ‘upstream insolvency’. Accordingly, in the UK, a contractor should include a ‘pay when paid’ clause, limited to employer insolvency, in its sub-contracts. This would mean that the contractor is not required to make payment to its sub-contractors if it has not received payment itself.

In order to protect yourself during the construction phase of a development, you should monitor the employer for signs of impending insolvency. Some of the warning signs include: • Official announcements to shareholders or the stock market, such as a profit warning. • Rumours about the employer’s financial position in the press and from other sources. • Delayed payment to the contractor and/or contractors on other projects. • Inexplicably personnel and removed from the project. • Unexpected or unexplained omissions from the project. • The employer suspends the project without explanation. • Late filing of accounts or annual returns at Companies House. • Unsatisfied court judgments against the employer. As a further precaution, it is advisable to: • Conduct Regular and complete invoicing - you should make applications for payment in accordance with the agreed payment schedule and must not allow sums owed to it by the employer to mount up. • Adhere to strict compliance with the building contract - make all claims under the building contract within the contractual time limits. Failure to do so may result in losing your right to claim. • Consider starting an adjudication before the employer goes insolvent - once they become insolvent, the court (or an insolvency practitioner) may have to give permission before a claim against them is started. Adjudication is therefore a quick and effective method and the difference between securing payment before the employer becomes insolvent and ending up in a queue of unsecured creditors.

stuff What to do if the employer goes insolvent: • Secure plant equipment and materials. This is particularly important for plant and equipment that is on hire or may be needed for other projects. • Review payment obligations to sub-contractors, professional consultants and suppliers. The contractor may be entitled to withhold payment in some situations. • Do not terminate the building contract without considering the situation. Contact the employer or the insolvency practitioner and anyone else interested in the project, such as a funder. These parties may wish to complete

the project using the contractor, either by novating the original contract or entering into a new arrangement with the contractor. • Monitor insolvency proceedings. If necessary, submit a proof of debt to recover a share of any monies available to unsecured creditors. • If the contractor is the largest creditor, it is possible to influence who is appointed as the liquidator. Whilst this will not guarantee any payment, it will give confidence that matters are being properly dealt with. Murderous Thoughts A new report suggests that almost a quarter of UK construction workers have harboured murderous thoughts towards their boss or line manager. Mark Anthony reports. I became a self-employed freelance on 1 June 1990 so I haven’t had a boss for almost 28 years. So perhaps I am out of touch with the trials and tribulations of modern employment. But I recently received a press release detailing the findings of a new report based on a survey of more than 2,000 UK workers. And I must admit that the findings are shocking. • Around 73 percent of the people surveyed believed they could do their boss’s job better than their boss. • 52 percent of respondents said they hated their job specifically because of their boss. • More than a quarter of construction and demolition workers surveyed said they hated their job. But those findings pale into insignificance compared to the biggest take-away from the survey. According to the report, approximately one in ten people have had murderous thoughts about their boss. That in itself is bad enough. But in the construction sector, almost a quarter of those surveyed in the Expert Market report admitted to having thought about killing their line manager.

boss. In fact, one in five workers said that they would actually turn down a pay rise in favour of firing their manager because they think their boss is not fit for purpose. All in all, more than a third of people admitted that they dread going to work and nearly 60 percent said they felt pressure to catch up on tasks during non-work hours. A fifth of people admitted to working four to six hours extra every week for free, with one in ten working seven to nine hours extra with no additional pay. Disappointing interpersonal relationships with bosses were further highlighted when respondents were quizzed on day-to-day interactions with their seniors. a quarter respondents theyJudd • • Nearly Harbour Central.ofPhoto courtesysaid of Rolfe would ignore their boss in the street; • 41 percent said they avoid their boss at work events • 45 percent classified their boss as a control freak. • 44 percent said their bosses set them impossible tasks • And a half of respondents said they had taken the blame for their boss’ mistakes.

Of course, almost a quarter of construction workers harbouring murderous thoughts about their boss is a great headline grabber. It certainly captured my attention. But there was more to the report.

Most of the time, I work alone. I can go hours and even days without any form of human interaction outside the guy that hands me my coffee at Starbucks. I have, on occasion, found myself discussing article and video ideas with my two boxer dogs. But based on the findings of this survey, I am glad that I am nether an employer or an employee.

Overall, more than half of respondents said that they hate their job specifically because of their

Your Time to Shine The first-ever British Demolition Awards ceremony is taking place later this year. And it is time that your achievements and accomplishments were recognised. On 20th July 2018, the UK’s premier demolition movers and shakers will gather at the worldfamous Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands for the inaugural British Demolition Awards. More than a year in the making, these awards have been designed and developed to recognise for the first time the accomplishments and achievements of some of the finest demolition minds in the world. Furthermore, the awards have been created to throw the spotlight onto several important roles within the demolition field that are all-too-often overlooked.

The categories for the British Demolition Awards are as follows: • • • • • • • • •

“The UK demolition industry is a recognised global leader in its field and we thought it was about time that the entire British demolition industry received the recognition it so richly deserves,” says Ben Chambers, managing director of Chambers Media Ltd, the publisher of Demolition magazine. “We also thought it was about time that some of the key roles within the sector received some credit as

stuff well. Not everyone in the industry wears a hard hat every day, but that doesn’t mean that their contribution is any less valuable and important.” This is a view that is echoed by Demolition magazine editor and DemolitionNews.com founder, Mark Anthony. “From the outset, I wanted these awards to be truly independent and unlike anything else in the industry,” he says. “I wanted the awards to be open to everyone in the industry, not just the big-name contractors and their directors. Furthermore, the judging will be 100% independent of the magazine and

website. For these awards to have any credibility whatsoever, it is vital that the winners are selected on merit, not because they’re a member of a trade association or because they spend a lot on advertising. In short, if you’re in the UK demolition industry and if you’re good enough, you could be walking away with a trophy.” The British Demolition Awards will be open for entries from Monday 12 February, closing Thursday 31 May 2018. Scottish Uprising Underway A new industry association has been launched to represent the interests of Scotland’s specialist demolition contractors and to make the most of future opportunities for employment and growth in the Scottish demolition industry. The inaugural meeting of the Demolition Contractors’ Association took place in Cumbernauld, bringing together the representatives of 20 specialist demolition contractors from across Scotland. The new association has been set up under the auspices of leading Scottish construction employers’ trade body the Scottish Building Federation and will be chaired by JCJ Group Director James Caldwell. The Association estimates that the Scottish demolition industry has a current annual value in the region of £150 million and directly employs around 2,500 Scottish workers. Key aims of the newly convened Association will include protecting and enhancing the Scottish demolition industry’s image and reputation, promoting continued professionalism within the industry and attracting more suitably skilled Scottish workers to consider a career in demolition. The Association is also committed to providing expert input to ensure relevant UK, Scottish and local government policies reflect the specific needs of the Scottish demolition sector. Association Chair James Caldwell and SBF Chief Executive Vaughan Hart have jointly written to a number of key decision-makers seeking

early meetings to discuss the aims of the new association in greater detail. The launch of the Demolition Contractors’ Association follows recent high profile announcements about the planned mass demolition of high rise buildings, notably a commitment by North Lanarkshire Council to demolish around 4,000 tower block homes to make way for lower rise accommodation over the next two decades. “There are many popular misconceptions about the demolition sector. In reality, it is a sector that consistently adheres to the highest standards of health and safety and professional practice while also offering excellent long term career prospects. With an ongoing drive to modernise Scotland’s building stock and as an integral part of the wider Scottish construction industry, there can be no doubt that the demolition sector will have a crucial role to play in the years ahead in developing a built environment in Scotland that is fit for the future,” says Demolition Contractors’ Association, Chair James Caldwell. “Set in that context, there has never been a more important time for the Scottish demolition sector to make its voice heard.” This is a view shared by Scottish Building Federation Managing Director, Vaughan Hart. “The Scottish Building Federation is committed to ensuring its organisation and structures reflect the Scottish construction industry in all its diversity. We recognise the specific and increasingly important role the demolition sector of the industry has to play in shaping the future of our built environment,” Hart concludes. “I look forward to working closely with James and the other members of the Demolition Contractors Association to help fight the sector’s corner and harness fully the future opportunities for employment and growth Scottish demolition has to offer.”

Breaking Everything but the Glass Ceiling Never mind the political incorrectness of the situation. Demolition’s failure to attract female workers is exacerbating the skills shortage, according to Mark Anthony

I recently received an email from a representative of a UK demolition company seeking my input for some low-level research they were carrying out. The question was very simple: Has there ever been a calculation of women in demolition as a statistic? I could have consulted my computer archives. I could have trawled through the thousands of individual CVs contained within the Demolition-Jobs.co.uk archives and figured out a rough percentage. Instead, I just named them. That’s right – There are so few women in front line demolition that I was able to name them straight off the top of my head. Now admittedly, my initial response came up with just four names. Having mulled on this overnight, I am now up to six women at senior manager, director or company principle level. Six out of about 500-odd companies. The names I came up with were: • Holly Bennett at Keltbray • Sarah Clark at Downwell Group • Julia Comley at Comley Demolition • Ellen Padgett at Kent Demolition • Zara Redhead at Redhead Demolition • And Jenna Romani at Demolition Services.

30

I may have missed a few, and for that I apologise. But you take my point. It is interesting to note that the vast majority of these find themselves within the UK demolition industry by birth or by marriage. Had they had a different father or husband, that six – which is already preposterously low – could be even lower still. This list proves something else though. Both Julia Comley and Zara Redhead find themselves running a demolition company following the premature and untimely death of their husbands. Jenna Romani took up the reins following the death of her father. None of them has seemingly spent the company profits on shoes and handbags; none have thrown a hissy-fit or been struck down with “lady issues” that prevent them from working; none have gone and got

stuff themselves pregnant and demanded a long and expensive period of maternity leave. In fact, as far as I can tell, both Comley and Redhead have maintained their respective businesses every bit as well as their late husbands. Jenna Romani is apparently doing the same at Demolition Services. And when Kent Demolition’s Dave Padgett finally hangs up his hard hat, his daughter looks set to run the company every bit as well as he has. It pains me that in 2018 this is still a cause for debate and discussion. But can we just accept once and for all that when it comes to demolition, women are every bit as capable as men? So where are they?

We need to say goodbye to the girlie calendars in site offices. We need to bid farewell to the effing and jeffing that constitutes on site “banter”. We need to recognise that when we encounter a woman on site, she is not there to make the tea; she is not there as eye candy or to give out her phone number to the first man that spots her.

Those of us that work in and around the demolition industry may not be able to see it. But this business has a major image problem. Depending who you ask, the demolition business is seen – variously – as knuckle-dragging, hairy-arsed, uneducated, racist, sexist and homophobic.

Like you and like me, she is there to work. She is there to work without being cat-called or wolfwhistled.

We blow stuff up and we knock it down with wrecking balls. We make a lot of noise and we make a lot of mess. We’re rough, tough and unregulated.

Wake up and smell the coffee – It’s 2018 and we can no longer afford to live in a Benny Hill-themed time warp.

Regardless of how true any of those statements actually are, with that public perception it is little wonder that we have failed so spectacularly in attracting women into the fold.

This article originally appeared as Episode #83 of Demolition News Radio which was broadcast on 6 February 2018. You can listen to it here:

This is a subject I have raised time and time again, largely without impact or effect.

Upon hearing that show, we were contacted by Adrian McLean of Armac Group who rightly pointed out that the Institute of Demolition Engineers has several female members that I had overlooked.

But I am making the point again, not because I want to surf the growing tide of feminism that is rising across the world. I am raising this point again not for the sake of political correctness. And I am raising it again not because I want to court controversy. I am raising it because by silently and indirectly alienating women, the UK demolition industry is turning its back on a ready, willing and able workforce large enough to plug any skills shortage an upsurge in workload cares to throw at us. But to take advantage of that untapped resource, the entire industry requires a root and branch attitude adjustment.

These are: • Sharon Haskell • Stella Wright • Dr Susan Buchner • Jane Prosser • Emma Thomson • Christina Wallace I apologise unreservedly for failing to mention them in the original broadcast.

The Site Manager Wore Mascara

ON SITE Kent Demolition is well-versed in keeping itself to itself and getting on with the business in hand. But the company has enjoyed a raised profile of late; and it owes much to company director and site manager Ellen Padgett. Mark Anthony reports. OK. Before we begin, let’s address the elephant in the room. Ellen Padgett is a young woman. Her gender has nothing whatsoever to do with the narrative of the story that follows, of course; nor does it have any impact or influence upon the reasoning behind my recent visit to one of the sites under her control. So if you’re hoping for a “woman in a man’s world” feature, you’ve come to the wrong place. Her youth, however? Now that is quite a different matter.

Garden of England

Kent Demolition is one of those companies with the enviable ability to largely fly under the industry radar whilst picking up plenty of work in and around its native region. This is no accident. Founder and managing director Dave Padgett wouldn’t have it any other way. He actively eschews industry gatherings; dismisses discussion about local “competitors”; and is suspicious of social media and posting details of his company’s successes on what he refers to as “Faceache-book”.

35

ON SITE That has not deterred his company from carving itself a healthy slice of the demolition business across the “Garden of England”. Nor has it prevented Padgett and his team from earning admiring nods from fellow demolition contractors in the South East of England. Yet despite Padgett’s reservations, the profile of Kent Demolition is on the rise. And it owes much to fellow director, qualified site manager and daughter, Ellen. Yes, she is a woman; and yes, she is feminine – There is no mistaking the blonde ponytail, the mascara or the girlie pink fingernails. And the Kent Demolition logo on her company branded sweatshirt is not pink but “raspberry”.

But more than all of this, she is young and brimming with youthful vigour; a demolition professional for the social media age. And for Ellen Padgett and many more of her generation, business naturally takes place – at least partly - on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.

Seven Years Later

Even though she has demolition in her blood, Padgett says she never set out to work in the industry. “I finished my A Levels and decided to help my dad out for six weeks over the summer,” she recalls. “That was seven years ago, and I am still here.”

ON SITE The youngest of three daughters, Ellen Padgett was the only one to show any desire to work in the family business. But it was clear from the outset that she would not be satisfied with an office role. “I enjoy operating the machines and being on site,” she says. To this end, she has qualified through the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), has passed her Asbestos Awareness and First Aider courses and has set her sights on qualifying as a Fire Marshall. In addition, she has tickets that permit her to drive just about every item of plant in the Kent Demolition fleet, and she is accredited to drive an articulated truck. There is also no sign of her getting an easy ride because her father is the boss. She is on site at 07.00 am to brief the team on the day’s work ahead, and she is often the last to leave the site having carried out a daily de-brief and stowed away the machines safely and securely. Against this background, she says that there has been no internal resentment from the Kent Demolition team over being told what to do by a woman. “We have a great team of guys and they have been supportive from the day I joined the company,” she says. “On site, we are like one big family. That’s why there is no shouting and swearing. Everyone knows their role, and I am there to see that it is being done.”

Still Sexist

Despite the support she has received from her fellow Kent Demolition workers, the same cannot always be said of those outside the company. “Some tipper drivers are surprised to see a woman on site and some new clients see a woman and just assume that I am either a secretary or that I am here to make the coffee,” she explains. “Make no mistake. The industry is still sexist.” One of her biggest frustrations is that demolition is still perceived as an all-male industry. “There is nothing the guys on site can do that I can’t do,” she asserts. “I can drive the machines the same as they can, and if something heavy needs lifting, I ask for help just the same as they would. But women just seem unaware of the job prospects within the demolition industry. In the seven years I have been with the company, I have never once received a job application from another woman.”

ON SITE Displaying a stoicism beyond her years, Padgett is not deterred. In fact, she is keen to point out the positives of having a woman among the site team. “There are some situations that do benefit from a woman’s touch,” she insists. “In the event of a disagreement with a client or a neighbour, I am often able to defuse a situation that might have escalated if it was between two men.”

allows it to punch well above its weight. “We are a relatively small team and I can’t be selling or winning new business while I am driving a machine or conducting a site briefing,” she says. “Through our presence on Twitter, however, we can be selling and interacting with clients 24 hours a day, even when I am too busy to be doing it in person.”

Professional Touch

Welcome to the modern world of demolition!

Tunbridge Wells-based Kent Demolition is by no means a big demolition company. But it is big enough. During just one morning on site with Ellen Padgett and her father, I personally witnessed the company receiving an influx of six demolition tender enquiries. Obviously, some of that is based on the company’s experience and existing client relationships. But it is also based on the company’s increasingly high profile on social media; another area that falls under Ellen Padgett’s jurisdiction. Through the use of Twitter and a regular electronic newsletter, Kent Demolition has established a reputation that

I have now had the pleasure of visiting not one but two Kent Demolition sites during the past year or so. Both were well-run and highly-organised. On both occasions, the site office was spotlessly tidy without a discarded copy of The Sun or a girlie calendar to be seen. And both sites seemed to run without the need for raised voices or swearing. That is not the result of a feminine touch. That is the result of a professional touch. And if that is what a demolition company of the social media age looks like, then sign me up to Face-ache-book.

Mick George Goes to School Mick George Ltd has been contracted to complete demolition works on behalf of Westleigh Partnerships Ltd, at the former Ashmount School, Beacon Road, Loughborough. The school, which is adjacent to the Epinal Way junction, is currently lying vacant since the former special education facility was relocated to Charnwood College Campus, Thorpe Hill, Loughborough back in 2014. The proposal for a new 32-dwelling housing development was given the green light from Charnwood Borough Council Plan’s Committee earlier this year, following submission of plans from Leicester County Council at the request of Councillor Jonathan Morgan. According to the ‘Design and Access’ statement that accompanied the site’s application, ‘’The development would help to meet the housing needs of the Borough and create a high quality residential environment which respects the character and amenities of its surroundings and provides clear community benefits for the wider area.’’

It is proposed that up to 30 percent of the dwellings will be in the form of affordable housing. The illustrative masterplan, reveals blocks of housing around a single central access into the site. Vehicle and pedestrian access to the location would be directly off Beacon Road, involving the reopening of an existing access into the former school. This access is currently closed off, as a separate shared access is being utilised to serve the two nearby schools. At present, the Sacred Heart Romain Catholic Primary School which is positioned to the south-west of the development is using the site as an overspill car-park. The nonformal arrangement will stop at the commencement of the scheme. Mick George Ltd are making a huge impression on the Construction industry in Leicestershire with their increased presence. They have also recently completed Earthworks on the new Aldi Store, in Thurmaston, North East Leicestershire. “We have completed many contracting works on education premises, in both a ‘live’ and ‘closed’ environment, so understand the complexities involved with projects such as these; especially when keeping the closeconsideration of the residential area in mind,” says Michael George, Contracts Director at Mick George Ltd. “We’re extremely pleased to be working alongside Westleigh Partnerships, who are particularly established in the Leicestershire region. More and more, Contractors that we have a longstanding relationship with are appreciating our geographical expansion and are utilising our services throughout the country.”

And Now, The End is Near Liberty Industrial carries out the controlled explosive demolition of Munmorah Power Station Boilers The final boiler and coal hopper structures at Munmorah Power Station in Australia have been demolished using controlled explosive demolition techniques. The boilers are the largest demolished in New South Wales so far. Weighing in at 32,200 tonnes and standing 60 metres in height, the combined boilers and coal hoppers are amongst the heaviest structures to be demolished using explosives in Australia. Contracted to carry out the demolition of the entire power station, specialist contractor Liberty Industrial used a controlled blast to bring the boilers down. Following the successful demolition of the chimney stacks in March 2017 and boilers 3 & 4 in May 2017, the blast is the last explosive demolition event to be carried out during the course of the power station’s removal. The demolition of the 60 metre high, 32,200 tonne boiler house was achieved utilising an engineered induced collapse technique. The process involves a carefully designed and calculated sequence of structural pre-weakening followed by the detonation of strategically placed explosives charges to collapse the structure in a predetermined direction. The technique was used to safely reduce the structure to suitable height for mechanical processing. Liberty Industrial’s giant demolition excavator will be put to work processing the debris. Do not be forced to write-off bad debts A large amount of debt is written off in the construction industry each year, some of which could be recovered by referring disputes to adjudication, helping maintain positive cash-flow. Many companies do not pursue bad debts as there is often no guarantee of a positive result, with little chance of being able to recover legal fees.

‘No-win-no-fee’ solution To try and assist with this issue Flint Bishop will consider, on a case-by-case basis, entering into Damages Based Agreements.

A Damages Based Agreement is a way of funding our fee to run an adjudication on your behalf. It is a ‘no-win-no-fee’ arrangement under which you agree to pay us a percentage of the amount that you recover in the adjudication. You only pay our fee if you win the claim and recover an amount of money. For more information on how our Damages Based Agreements could help you and to download our free guide, visit our website:

Liberty Industrial Director Simon Gill praised the project team for their efforts. “Wonderful to see the final explosive demolition event safely completed at Munmorah Power Station, our site team has worked tirelessly over the past 3 months preparing for this event. The success of this event is testament to their dedication and hard work, and further highlights Liberty Industrial’s capability in the field of explosive demolition.” Stephen Saladine, Managing Director of Generator Property Management said, “As we near completion of the demolition of the former Power Station site, it’s timely to acknowledge the great work of the team that has managed and executed these events. This team is made up of local and international experts with highly specialised knowledge. Ensuring all checks are made and key stakeholders are informed of the progress is an integral part of the process, and GPM continues to work closely with authorities to achieve a safe and environmentally responsible outcome. ” One final major demolition event is planned for 2018, the completion of the removal of the power station is expected to be finalised by October 2018.

• The demolition was achieved using an engineered induced collapse technique involving structural preweakening followed by the detonation of strategically placed explosives charges. • The demolition of Munmorah Power Station Boiler House Units 3 and 4 was carried out on Sunday the 21st of May around 10:00am AEST. These were the largest boilers to be demolished in Australia to date at that time. • Liberty Industrial’s team has been systematically demolishing the redundant Munmorah Power Station in Colongra NSW since July 2016 • Generator Property Management and Liberty Industrial have been working with SafeWork NSW and the site meets all relevant State and Local Government requirements One final major demolition event is planned for 2018 with the demolition of the remaining turbine house structure.

What’s NEXT for Kobelco?

KIT TALK Following several years of research and development, including valuable feedback from the European market, Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe B.V. (KCME) has announced the launch of the all-new SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 demolition machines.

The versatile new models, which feature Kobelco’s proven NEXT system for both high elevation and foundation demolition work, provide a safe and quick solution for the assembly/disassembly of attachments and maintenance and enable easy transportation between projects, for significant cost savings. Kobelco is already a market leader for demolition equipment in Japan, and chose the BAUMA exhibition in 2016 to showcase its NEXT Series SK400DLC-9 to the European market for the first time. Feedback obtained from dealers, customers and operators over the next 12 months combined with an increasing demand for demolition and heavy machinery, led to the further improvement and development of the machine before its official launch. The next generation Kobelco SK400DLC-10 and larger capacity SK550DLC-10 are now set to lead the way in high performance building demolition equipment in Europe. The Kobelco SK400DLC-10 is based on the highly acclaimed SK350LC-10, sharing the same turbo-charged Stage IVcompliant engine and hydraulic system for high performance and low fuel consumption,

49

KIT TALK while the SK550DLC-10 is based on the larger SK500LC-10. However, utilisation of the Kobelco-developed NEXT system means that the machines can also be adapted for multiple applications on the job site, including high elevation demolition projects as well as breaking up foundations. The NEXT ultra-high attachment is best suited to the demolition of multi-storey buildings from ground level. Both the SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 have four ultra-long attachment configurations and can work to a maximum height of approximately 24.7 and 27.5 metres respectively. The separate boom configuration is ideal for tackling the lower floors of tall buildings where the concrete is at its thickest. The maximum working depth of the SK400DLC-10 is 6,210 mm, while the SK550DLC-10 can work to 6,260 mm below ground level. Each boom attachment is reinforced for increased durability and reduced structural fatigue, and has a block structure that simplifies the assembly/ disassembly process in order to reduce downtime on site. Attachments are connected by hooking the upper (backside) pin to the opposite pins on the lower side – the pressure release to pin fixing can be completed quickly and safely. All attachment joints have the hydraulic piping mounted to the side for easier access and maintenance. Also contributing to the machine’s longevity, the top plates of the booms have neither been drilled nor welded to avoid additional stress.

Another important benefit of the NEXT system is the low storage height of the ultra-high attachment when stowed. This attachment is designed with the jib and arm cylinders crossed over the shorter inter arm, while the back of the arm remains flat. As a result, the height of the attachment in its stored position is approximately 2.0 metres, which means that it can be transported between projects on a standard trailer, saving significant logistical costs. Other factors contributing to easy transportation include a hydraulic extension/retraction mechanism, which can reduce the width of the crawlers to approx. 3.0 metres in compliance with some strict European transport regulations, and the two-part counterweight, which can be separated more easily than an integrated counterweight. Demolition job sites provide challenging conditions for the operator, so Kobelco has worked hard to develop the SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 with increased comfort and safety in mind. The demolitionspecification cabin, which is compliant with FOPS level II, can tilt up to 30-degrees so that the operator can maintain a comfortable posture during high elevation demolition work. In addition, the operator can enjoy an unobstructed upward view due to the pillar-less design, while parallel windscreen wipers and washers on both the front and top windows contributes to optimum visibility. Cab guards can also be opened for easy maintenance of the windows.

KIT TALK Other important safety features on these new models include the new cab interference prevention system, which sounds an alarm and prevents the machine from allowing the working tool to come into contact with the cab during operation. In addition, the working radius and stability of the machines are calculated from the position of the attachment and the operator is warned with an alarm when stability is compromised via the stability warning system. The SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 are also equipped with rear view and right side cameras, a loudspeaker system, falling object deflector and bright, long-life LED lights for increased visibility on site. “We are very pleased to finally launch the SK400DLC-10 and SK550DLC-10 in Europe after many years of important research and development. Kobelco already has an excellent reputation in Japan’s demolition sector, and we

are proud to now be able to offer our proven demolition machines and technology to our European customers,” says Kobelco Product Marketing Manager, Peter Stuijt. “The NEXT system is designed to save significant costs and time on the job site, as only one machine is needed for both high reach and low level demolition work. Attachments can be changed in around 30 minutes, and the machine can be transported easily on a regular trailer. As the machines are designed to operate in tough environments, much consideration has also been given to the lifespan of the equipment. Many of the components have been reinforced for extra durability and additional features, including the double element air cleaner, full track guides and water spray, further increase longevity. These are just some of the many reasons why we have already sold a number of these machines to dealers across Europe.”

KIT TALK Erith Invests Erith Contractors has started 2018 with a substantial investment in technologically advanced plant equipment.

With a strategic mix of medium and large machinery, this latest acquisition of resources consists of 12 Hitachi hydraulic excavators; an order valued at more than £2 million. The Hitachi haul comprises: • 4 x Hitachi ZX85US • 3 x Hitachi ZX490 • 2 x Hitachi ZX225 • 2 x Hitachi ZX135US • 1 x Hitachi ZX350 The planned deployment of a number of these latest acquisitions will bolster another recent investment of plant by the Erith Group, for use at the company’s Washmills recycling centre. Several of the new Hitachi equipment will be underpinned at the recycling centre by the following plant and attachments: • Kleeman Mobicat 110 • Kleeman Mobiscreen MS15Z • Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X 3 deck version • Doppstadt SM620 Kette Unit • Stanley MSD2250 Mobile Shears • KINSHOFER DRS 45A Mobile Shears

According to the company, the Washmills Recycling Centre further strengthens its position in the Ebbsfleet Garden City development. This increase in recycling capacity allows for the reprocessing of tarmac and concrete, and not only serves the requirements for aggregates on projects but also the demands of the external market in the South East and London, with 75,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste treated per annum. Materials will vary from a range of single sized shingles from 6 to 40 mm, Type 1 and many other bespoke recycled materials to meet client requirements. The majority of this new plant has been fitted with fully automatic hydraulic quick couplers, using Oil Quick. Oil Quick is key to reducing health and safety risks on site as the system not only prevents oil spillages, but reduces man to machine interaction with attachments now being changed automatically, rather than manually, from inside the machine cabin. This technology also decreases down time and drastically improves efficiency. Erith reports that innovations in health and safety remains at the forefront of its investment strategy.

KIT TALK JCB Extends Mini Range JCB is further boosting its comprehensive mini excavator range with the launch of the 15C-1, the fourteenth model new since the first of the next generation machines was introduced in 2014.

Tipping the scales at 1.5 tonnes, the conventional tailswing mini excavator shares a similar design, with the same choice of digging equipment as the 16C-1 that was launched last year. Both machines are powered by an 11.7kW diesel engine, though the 15C-1 uses a gear pump, while the hydraulic system on the 16C-1 has a variable displacement piston pump. Both mini excavators come with mechanical auxiliary controls. The 15C-1, is aimed primarily at the rental and tool hire market, uses a shorter fixed undercarriage, with single speed tracking, long pitch tracks and mechanical track tensioners. The higher specification 16C-1 is a plant hire model, with a variable width undercarriage for additional stability when digging and lifting. The machine benefits from short pitch tracks for smoother travel, with grease track tensionsers and twin speed tracking motors.

The 15C-1 has 100 percent steel bodywork, providing maximum protection for components and ease of repair in the event of knocks on site. Likewise, where the full ROPScompliant cab is specified, it has flat glazing all round, for easy replacement. Despite its compact dimensions, the mini excavator benefits from the next generation cab already seen on larger models, boasting a 24 percent greater internal space than previous machines. All next generation mini excavators come with 10 tiedown points, positioned on the undercarriage and upperstructure, making it easier to transport the machine without risk of damage to rubber tracks. With a wide opening fold-out rear door, the machines have excellent service access, while 500-hour greasing intervals help to reduce downtime and operating cost for the customer. The 15C-1 completes a comprehensive range of 14 mini and midi excavators from JCB Compact Products. This includes seven conventional tailswing models, from the 15C-1 to the 10-tonne 100C-1, along with two reduced tailswing models and five zero tailswing excavators. With this enviable line-up of conventional, reduced and zero tailswing machines, offered with a choice of cab or canopy, JCB has a mini or midi excavator to meet the needs of every industry sector, from tool and plant hire, through to specialist contractors.

KIT TALK Epiroc Claims World First While most of us are still growing accustomed to calling Atlas Copco hydraulic hammers Epiroc, the company has been beavering away in its research and development department and has come up with what it claims to be a first in hydraulic breaker technology. the beginning of the breaking cycle, and in the AutoStop mode the breaker stops automatically to avoid blank firing at the end of the breaking cycle. Epiroc now takes these features to a higher level. Now the functions are combined in Epiroc´s Intelligent Protection System (IPS). IPS ensures that the hydraulic breaker always starts in the AutoStart mode. When the contact pressure between chisel and material increases and AutoControl switches from a short piston stroke to a long piston stroke IPS switches automatically to the AutoStop mode. When the chisel breaks through the material the breaker automatically shuts off and prevents blank firing. IPS makes the breaking process even simpler for the operator by automatically adapting the breaker’s operating behaviour to any working condition. Uptime is higher since, with its fully automated functionality, IPS requires no operator intervention or reaction and thus there is no interruption of the working process. Many of the company’s rig mounted heavy hydraulic breakers now feature the patented Intelligent Protection System (IPS). Combining Epiroc’s popular AutoControl and StartSelect functions, this fully automated system is said to provide simpler, more efficient, and more economical operation than ever before. AutoControl and StartSelect have been popular features on Epiroc hydraulic breakers for some years. AutoControl optimises breaker performance by automatically adjusting the piston stroke length. The StartSelect system offers manual switching between two modes: the AutoStart mode enables easy positioning at

The system permits more accurate and significantly faster positioning of the breaker, thanks to the centring effect, and avoids blank firing that often results in tool damage. This also eliminates mechanical strain on the carrier and the life of all wear components is extended. The physical load on the operator is minimised as well. Epiroc HB 2000, HB 2500, HB 3100, HB 3600 and HB 4700 are equipped with IPS. During 2018 all other heavy hydraulic breakers in Epiroc´s range will incorporate this unique system. KIT TALK Plantforce Wins Silver Plantforce has announced the arrival of the new Kobelco SK210HLC-10, the world’s first lithium-ion battery powered hybrid excavator.

Since developing the first full hydraulic excavator in 2006, Kobelco’s hybrid system has evolved significantly. The all new electric swing motor provides operability unique to hybrid machines. During swing acceleration the swing motor is only powered by electricity accumulated in the lithium-ion battery which contributes to the SK210HLC-10’s exceptional fuel efficiency. The braking energy generated during swing deceleration is converted into electricity which is stored. The SK210HLC-10’s large lithium-ion battery allows greater retention of stored electricity to provide the necessary electrical output to a new Kobelco-developed 25 kW powerassist generator motor. The 21-tonne excavator has a Stage IV compliant Hino engine.

In recent years the company has invested heavily in new trucks and plant & machinery to keep the business at the top of its game, enabling them to offer the most reliable service to its customers, many of which are blue chip national companies. Historically in the past Mercian had used competitors’ excavators and wheeled loaders but in more recent years the company has turned to Hyundai kit supplied by local dealer Molson Group. “We did take demonstration models from all the major players and really did our homework evaluating the machines like for like,” says Mercian’s Site Manager Stephen Shiels. “We really liked the look of the Hyundai’s and felt

that they represented excellent value for money, in addition feedback from our operators was very good regarding the Hyundai’s.” “Molson offered the best overall deal, so we went with them and opted for the premium extended warranty package, so for us it’s literally a case of just adding fuel, which offers us great peace of mind going forward,” says Shiels. “We are now 3-years into this working relationship with Molson and we are already in the process of planning the next upgrade to our fleet of machines”. The oldest Hyundai on the fleet is an R 210LC-9 hydraulic excavator which was a second-hand unit supplied by Molson, this machine

ADVERTORIAL “When considering a new screener, we had a few in mind and our decision was made from a variety of factors such as value for money and specification of the unit, in particular a large screening area. I also went with Matpro due to their excellent customer service. From pricing & information through to commissioning, they were consistently helpful and a pleasure to work with. I would recommend them to anyone,” says Chris Thomson, Director at H. Thomson and Sons Ltd. “The Anaconda DF410 mobile screener has helped us massively. Our previous, miniature screener was only helping us process approximately 20 tonnes an hour, where as this machine is now helping us to process upto 300 Tonnes an hour– there’s no comparison. From top soil to aggregates, it consistently performs from one day to the next.”
