Major exhibitions such as Bauma in 2016 and ConExpo in March this year provide a useful and often accurate insight into market sentiment. Bauma, the first since the recession was finally pronounced dead across most of Europe, was upbeat. And the ConExpo show in Las Vegas maintained that buoyant feeling attracting visitors from across the globe. Of course, such major events were never designed to act as an economic barometer; they are only read as such by professional exhibition watchers such as myself. But the fact that the presidency of Donald Trump has done little to dent the industry’s confidence will come as a blessed relief to all those that depend upon demolition and construction workload to provide them with a living wage. It will come as a relief also to the hundreds of manufacturers that shoe-horned themselves into the Las Vegas Convention Center in order to showcase their wares once again. These manufacturers, temporarily free of the research and development shackles set in place to ensure they met emissions regulations, have once again embraced the creativity and innovation for which the sector is known. Every major manufacturer worth its salt now backs its equipment with advanced telematics that allow machines to be monitored and managed from across the globe. Caterpillar, no slouch when it comes to innovation, demonstrated its ability to not just monitor but to operate a dozer from 1,700 miles away. Volvo showed off the latest prototype iteration of its autonomous quarry trucks that don’t even have a cab let alone an onboard operator. Of course, these levels of automation are currently best suited to predictable and repetitive tasks within the confines of a remote mine or quarry. But anyone that thinks that such technology will not make the leap from quarry to mainline construction and demolition is kidding themselves. The likes of Brokk (which showed off its latest demolition robot at ConExpo) and Husqvarna have already proven that demolition equipment can be operated remotely. Is it really such a leap to think that they might not one day be operated from the comfort and safety of a building hundreds of miles away? If the development of demolition equipment over the past two or three decades had a central theme, then that theme would be the gradual removal of man from the workface and the associated hazards present there. In a post-Didcot world, surely that theme will continue?

STUFF happy birthday big boy Which 10-year-old hits with a force equivalent to the weight of 130 elephants, or the landing pressure of an Airbus A380? The answer is the Atlas Copco HB 10000, the world’s largest serial hydraulic breaker. Since its launch in 2007 the HB1000 has been one big success story, helping users worldwide to achieve exceptional productivity in rock excavation. Indeed, there is a scale model of the massive breaker on my desk as I type this. The launch of the HB 10000 was an important step towards serving an emerging market segment – the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true economic alternative when drilling and blasting is restricted. The sheer breaking power of the HB 10000 has become legendary. The power generated in a single impact between piston and working tool corresponds to a weight force of around 760 metric tons, and impact frequency is up to 380 blows per minute. Tasked with handling 34,400 cubic meters of bulk rock excavation on a site in New York, one US contractor said: “The HB 10000 hits like a freight train. It’s borderline unbelievable what that breaker can do!” “The HB 10000 is breaking out more than double compared to our existing seven ton breaker,” says Jim Dupuis, Managing Director and owner of Earthmoving Contractors Pty Ltd (EMC), in Brisbane, Australia. “If you work that out over an hour, day, week, month or a year – that is a massive production increase.” “As early as the prototype phase, it was clear the HB 10000 was going to be a hit,” reflects Torsten Ahr, Vice President Marketing Hydraulic Attachment Tools. “We received several firm inquiries from operations where our prototypes had been tested even before the production model went on sale.” Weighing in at 10 metric tons and designed for use with carriers in the 85 to 140 tonnes operating weight class, the HB 10000 has all the usual technical features of Atlas

Appetite for Destruction The navy blue Pirtek service van is a familiar sight on demolition sites the length and breadth of the country. And little wonder. The company’s market-leading hydraulic hose replacement service keeps the wheels and tracks of the industry turning. Mark Anthony reports. In an application where a high reach excavator is the prime mover, everything on that site hinges upon the uptime of that main machine. If it fails, the support machines, crushers, screen, haulage trucks and – more importantly – the men and women on site all stop.

To the layman, demolition is just pure destruction. It is explosives, wrecking balls and great piles of debris. Nothing could be further from the truth. The modern world of demolition is one of precision and engineering. The use of explosives – in the UK at least – is something of a rarity (which is probably why it makes the news headlines when it does happen). A wrecking ball probably hasn’t been swung at a structure in the UK for more than a decade. And as for debris, the UK demolition sets a global standard for recycling and reuse of materials with many achieving recycling rates of 98 percent or more.

But virtually everything tool in the modern demolition man’s armoury requires hydraulics. And with hydraulics comes hoses that require care, attention and replacement. Throw into the mix the gradual adoption of hydraulic quick couplers such as the OilQuick or Lehnhoff systems, and it is easy to see why most UK demolition contractors have their local Pirtek centre on speed dial. Yet there is much more to the relationship between the demolition contractor and its local

Of course, prevention is always preferable to cure. But the nature of the demolition

Although equipment and attachment manufacturers have grown increasingly adept at routing hydraulic hoses within their products for added protection, the presence of highly abrasive bricks and concrete and steel reinforcing bar upon which to get snagged means that hydraulic hose failures are a constant threat that pretty much goes with the job. The app utilises a smartphone’s GPS capabilities to identify exactly where a customer is and then recommend which of our Hose Centres across the UK and Ireland is closest,” explains Pirtek UK Managing Director (South), Alistair Wiggins. “The app automatically forwards the customer’s precise GPS location to the Centre and to the MSST, allowing them to respond even more quickly and efficiently.”

operations manager Matt Right. “So I arranged for Pirtek Birmingham to provide cover for the entire time we were operating at Catthorpe. They provided two vans with MSSTs working 12 hour shifts from 8pm Friday evening, during the set up period, right through to Sunday morning when we were clearing up.” Having called upon Pirtek Birmingham’s support on previous bridge demolition projects, Right says he knew what to expect. But even he admits to having been genuinely impressed by the level of commitment shown on the Catthorpe contract. “Pirtek have helped us standardise the hydraulic hoses and fittings on our excavators in the past. This meant that any repairs would be quick and efficient. There was a lot of forward planning and the Pirtek engineers were all briefed and inducted on site so everything ran like clockwork. They became part of our team and were very proactive, even helping to change excavator attachments to help us save time,” Right concludes. “I can honestly say hats off to Pirtek, they did a very professional job, and Skanska and the Highways Agency were chuffed to bits that it all went to schedule.”

Belt and Braces

In extreme cases, Pirtek will go even further to help ensure the on-time completion of a timereliant demolition contract. Nowhere is this more popular than during the demolition of a road or railway bridge which are often conducted during an overnight or weekend-long “possession”. “A demolition contractor might have 12, 24 or 48 hours in which to take down a bridge, remove the debris, and re-open the road or railway below,” Pirtek’s Managing Director (North), Paul Dunlop continues. “These possessions – which are often carried out in conjunction with the Highways Agency or a major rail company – carry huge financial penalties if the road or railway remains closed for longer than the allotted time. Breakdowns are simply not an option.” Midlands-based Armac Group – known throughout the industry as “the bridge busters” – take a belt and braces approach to such overnight possessions. If a job requires two excavators, Armac takes four, just in case. As if that were not enough contingency for one or two nights’ work, Armac goes a step further. During the demolition of a motorway bridge over the M1, the company was faced with late completion penalties of £18,000 per hour. The company assembled what is believed to be the largest ever fleet of demolition fire power for a bridge demolition comprising 14 hydraulic excavators ranging from 70 to 50 tonnes; two 7 tonne hydraulic breakers; four 6 tonne breakers; six 4 tonne beakers; four 6 tonne pulverisers; four 4 tonne hydraulic processors; two 7 tonne shears; and a fleet of 12 x 40 tonne payload dumptrucks. “I knew we would have a lot of machinery on site, and it all had to work all the time we were operating. And one of the most obvious causes of non-scheduled downtime is a hydraulic failure or damage to a hydraulic part,” explains Armac’s

STUFF Woodward has committed a lot of time to promoting demolition as a career choice to school children by taking part in the government-backed initiative Inspiring the Future and co-writing his own children’s book called My Dad Does Demolition. “There is a huge skills gap in the demolition industry as a whole, particularly when it comes to young people. Last year’s announcement of the UK’s first demolition degree was a step in the right direction, but now initiatives such as SaveLives can supplement this by promoting engineering to children of a younger age,” Woodward says. “Many children today are intent on becoming footballers or pop stars, which is fine, but there are also a large percentage of youngsters spending hours on end playing constructionbased games like Minecraft. This is the audience we should be looking to attract. Taking Over the Asylum Asbestos, bats, protected trees, hidden tunnels, urban explorers and ghost hunters are just some of the challenges that faced Mick George Ltd when it won the contract to demolish a former asylum in Essex. The company is proving to be more than a match, as Mark Anthony reports.

To say that Colchester’s Severalls Hospital has a chequered past is like saying Donald Trump has made some questionable hair choices. It was built in 1910 to the design of architect Frank Whitmore, opened in May 1913 and would initially serve as a psychiatric facility for shell-shocked troops returning from the trenches of World War 1. The 120 hectare site housed more than 3,000 patients and was based on the “Echelon plan” - a specific arrangement of wards, offices and services within easy reach of each other by a network of interconnecting corridors and underground tunnels. This meant that staff were able to operate around the site without the need to go outside in bad weather. Villas were constructed around the main hospital building as accommodation blocks between 1910 and 1935.

ON SITE Three 500lb bombs were dropped on the hospital by the Luftwaffe in August 1942, killing 38 patients and largely destroying the facility’s West Wing. But the darkest period of the hospital’s history was yet to come. Psychiatrists were free to experiment with new treatments on patients seemingly at will, using practices now considered unsuitable. In her book Madness in Its Place: Narratives of Severalls Hospital, 1913-1997, author Diana Gittins notes that often women were admitted by their own family, sometimes as the result of bearing illegitimate children or because they had been raped. As they were unable to carry out daily tasks, they were considered to be insane and some were even subjected to ECT (ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) and lobotomy. This dark history, coupled with the vaguely Gothic feel of some of the architecture, has subsequently established Severalls Hospital as a Mecca for urban explorers (a fancy term for trespassers) and ghost

hunters, each seeking the “thrill” of entering the facility’s former wards, tunnels and even its morgue.

Creatures of the Night

Not surprisingly, one of the first tasks facing demolition contractor Mick George Ltd was the installation of perimeter fencing and security systems to keep such thrill seekers out while it set about demolishing the 170+ buildings that make up the hospital. “The site has a cult following,” says Mick George Ltd’s Phil Hayden. “There are lots of films on YouTube of these people wandering about at night with torches, looking for ghosts. Thankfully, we haven’t had any since we arrived on site.” Hayden and his team were also required to deal with another set of creatures of the night. “Having lain empty for a number of years, the hospital had become home to a large colony of bats,” he explains. “We had to build two underground tunnels out of two metre square culvert and migrate the bats into there.” And the company’s nature preservation did not end there. “The site has some well-established woodlands and the housebuilder that will take over the site when we finish was keen to retain almost all the trees,” Hayden continues. “So we have had to put in place tree and root protection, as many of the trees have tree protection orders on them.” Also protected are the tallest structure on the site – an historic water tower – and three villas, all of which

heavy equipment,” he says. “But sequencing has been a key challenge on this contract.” Asbestos elsewhere on the site would also require the team at Mick George Ltd to let its innovation (literally) take flight. “A lot of the buildings were in such a bad state of repair that we were unable to carry out refurbishment and demolition surveys safely,” he says. “After consultation with the Health and Safety Executive, we used drone surveys to ascertain precisely what we would be dealing with.”

Droning On

In keeping with the Echelon Plan layout of the site, many of the buildings are linked by more than four kilometres of underground tunnels, many of which represent an asbestos hazard. “A lot of the tunnels contain cast iron pipework, much of it covered in an asbestos coating,” Hayden continues. “Our in-house asbestos specialists are in there now, safely removing the material.”

Smoother Interface

As if the presence of protected bats, trees and historic buildings were not sufficient incentive for Mick George Ltd to take a “slowly slowly” approach at Severalls Hospital, then the potential reward from reclaiming a large quantity of Welsh roof

Hayden reports that the presence of the underground tunnels has also presented some scheduling challenges. “We have propped many of the tunnels and put in place protection where they run below a route that might be used by

ON SITE slate and more than two million London Stock yellow bricks for re-use in the construction sector most certainly is. “This is not your standard demolition job,” Hayden insists. “Although it is machine demolition, we have to take the bricks down using a rotating selector grab and put them to one side for the brick cleaning crew to clean and package them.” The complexity of this latest contract is further evidence of Mick George Ltd’s growing presence in the hotly-contested field of demolition. “We dabbled in demolition for more than 15 years. But we have all learned a lot over the years and we know where we want to be. We are aiming to be one of the major players in the UK demolition sector. Technically, we know we have to continue to raise our game but we have recruited the right kinds of people and we have stepped up our in-house learning,” Phil Hayden concludes. “We are looking to

offer developers a one-stop shop that includes asbestos surveying and removal, demolition and soil remediation. Last Tower Standing Connell Brothers has started work on the demolition of the vacant Tameside Court, last remaining tower block of the old Hattersley Estate. The iconic 11-storey, 34 metre tall Tameside Court is being demolished in the next phase of a dynamic regeneration programme in Hattersley which to date has seen ÂŁ200 million invested by partners Tameside Council, Peak Valley Housing Association, Symphony Housing Group and The Homes and Communities Agency.

Since 2001 as part of the ongoing regeneration of the Hattersley Estate, Connell Brothers have carried out the demolition of over 500 houses and buildings throughout the area making way for the construction of modern housing and local amenities.

Tameside Court is being demolished using Connell Brothers’ specialist Caterpillar 375 customised high reach demolition excavator. The excavator weighs 90 tons and can work at heights of up to 40 metres. As part of the project, Connell Brothers have already demolished the former Four in Hand public house.

The regeneration programme has brought new facilities including the Hub Community Centre, Hattersley Library, a Tesco Superstore and council offices. In addition, Barratts have sold more than 260 new homes in Hattersley and their large scale development programme will total in excess of 800 new homes completely changing the tenure mix in the area.

ON SITE The work is being carried out close to residential properties and the busy Hattersley Road East, and will be carefully carried out by Connell Brothers, the Manchester-based demolition, dismantling and asbestos removal contractor, working for Chartered Quantity Surveyors Simon Fenton Partnership, in a project for Peak Valley Housing Association (PVHA), part of Symphony Housing Group. Each phase of the project has been planned and co-ordinated by both Peak Valley Housing Association and Connell Brothers to ensure minimal disruption to the local residents. The firm has been instrumental over the last 15 years in clearing the way for the extensive transformation of the Hattersley Estate. In 2001 Connell Brothers successfully demolished seven tower blocks, still the largest ever demolition project awarded by the City of Manchester, the authority for the city’s overspill estate in the borough of Tameside.

This hugely successful regeneration project is a fine example of what can be achieved through close partnership working and could not have been possible without the support of Tameside Council and the local community.”

The tower blocks were demolished employing varying methods of demolition. One block was deconstructed floor by floor, and four blocks demolished using explosives, with 1,200 residents evacuated from 405 properties. Keeping Quiet If there’s one thing libraries are known for – aside from books – it is their inherent dislike of noise. A national utilities company was attempting to remove a piece of concrete that was 8.5 x 1.3 x 1.0 metres that was a redundant crane base to create a new pipeline outside Imperial College. But the company was using an excavator with a hydraulic hammer and it proved to be too loud for the local bookworms, and caused vibration within the college library building.

So when a contractor was told to keep the noise down when trying to remove a substantial area of concrete from outside a library building in London, it called in the experts from D-Drill.

So the London office of D-Drill, which has branches across the UK, was asked to find a solution to keep the noise down. “The heavy excavator was making too much noise and we had to find a way to remove the concrete without causing a disturbance. Using our automatic feed diamond drilling rigs, our operatives stitch drilled the perimeter of the trench to a depth

of one metre,” explains branch manager Jimmy Smith. “We then diamond drilled 200 mm diameter holes to accommodate our 200 mm hydraulic bursting head at two holes per 750 mm spacing along the length of the trench. That allowed us to burst the concrete out with the spoils removed by a three-tonne machine supplied by the site.” It meant the students in the library could concentrate on their work and the main contractor was delighted with the result. “The work was completed within time and budget but most of all without any noise or vibration to interrupt the college library or the students’ normal day,” Smith concludes. “The operators were very careful with the stitch drilling and kept the trench straight and plumb and the client was very happy with the work we undertook.”

Breaking Taboos The demolition division of the O’Keefe Group of Companies has devised a unique solution to a façade retention challenge in the shadow of the Tower of London. Demolition editor Mark Anthony is suitably impressed.

Anyone that watched the recent BBC TV series Taboo starring Tom Hardy will be familiar with the ruthlessness with which the Honourable East India Company went about its business. It would surprise no-one to learn that an archaeological dig beneath the former London premises of a company that once accounted for half the world’s trade unearthed a number of bodies. While the company that would eventually come to own great swathes of the Indian subcontinent ceased trading in 1874, at least one demolition company is still feeling its influence.

and the Walkie Talkie building just around the corner. Located in a conservation area, Walsingham House lies opposite the Grade I listed St Olave’s Church and adjoins a four-star hotel. The area is steeped in history, and although archaeological investigations are ongoing, finding are expected to include sections of a Roman road and structural elements from the 13th, 16th and 17th centuries.

There is no tower crane. “The ongoing archaeological dig in the basement meant that we could not install a crane base and a tower crane,” explains demolition director Andrew Farquharson. “Instead, we lifted all the necessary equipment onto the roof using a mobile crane during a weekend road closure.” A pair of mini excavators equipped with hydraulic breakers have taken care of the lion’s share of the heavy demolition work, ably supported by a pair of skid steer loaders: one to drop debris down a central shaft; the other tackling the re-handling onto a mini conveyor on the first floor. But even this was not without its challenges. To facilitate that transformation, O’Keefe Demolition has been employed to carefully demolish the interior structure of the building, whilst retaining the attractive Portland stone façade. Yet there is something slightly different about

But that steel work effectively had to go in through the front door. “All of the façade retention steel had to go up through a hole using a winch or be man-handled up the stairs before being dragged across the floor, cut into angles in-situ and then welded into place,” he says. “The existing steel work is also riveted so we had to pack out the steel to provide a flush area that we could weld onto.” With a live, four star hotel within touching distance of the site, noise monitoring has been a crucial element of the works. “The noise monitors are linked to the mobile

phones of the senior site staff,” explains O’Keefe’s Kevin Hartigan. “When the noise level hits 70 dBA, we receive a warning. If they hit 75 dBA, work is stopped.” Controlling noise is no easy feat on a site like this. Not only is there a pair of excavators equipped with hydraulic hammers breaking out the building’s core but there is also extensive handheld breaking and sawing taking place to separate the inner core of the structure from the façade. And here, O’Keefe – together with ISG – is pioneering once again. Each of the operatives using hand-held tools is wearing a

ON SITE Collins Gets the Blue Crush Award winning demolition attachments from ROTAR are proving to be a welcome asset to the growing success of Midlandsbased Collins Demolition.

Collins Earthworks Group has been managing earthmoving projects for over 10 years. Based in the Midlands at Kirkby in Ashfield, they provide a fast, flexible, reliable and professional service all around the UK. The Group offer Bulk Earthworks, Recycling, Ground Stabilisation, Demolition, Plant Hire, Civil Engineering and Haulage amongst other services. With over 250 employees and 130 excavators they are established experts in their field. The Group now encompasses Collins Demolition Ltd, established in March last year following the appointment of Scott Craddock as Director. A highly experienced demolition expert, Craddock joined the company to help expand the existing demolition operations.

The company operates excavators ranging from six to 75 tons and a wide range of Rotar grabs, shears and pulverisers, all purchased within the last five years from Worsley Plant. The company’s arsenal of Rotar equipment has been expanded recently by the addition of an RSS30 Scrap Shear and a RG37 Grab. This latest purchase marked a first for Scott Craddock. Although he has been in the demolition industry all his life and used an array of different equipment, he had never used Rotar products before. Indeed, his first exposure to the Rotar brand was when he joined Collins Earthworks Group to set up the Demolition arm of the company.

ON SITE includes dismantling a 15,708 m2 mezzanine floor, returning the building to an empty shell so that it can be re-let by the landlord. Half of the factory is racking made of steel and metal and Collins is taking all that down and sending it for recycling. From beginning to end, the project is expected to take six weeks.

A recent project involving the demolition of the Sun Centre in Rhyl meant the company needed a shear quickly, so Andrew Purse of Worsley Plant was delighted to sort this out for them. Within two weeks, the company had a brand new shear ready to use on site. Using it for the first time, Scott Craddock reports that he was very impressed with the speed, agility and robustness of the shear, coupled with its ability to get into tight places. The Rhyl job also involved using Rotar pulverisers and grabs along with the shear. The pulveriser processed 10,000 m3 of concrete and the Shear cut 850 tonnes of scrap. It was a two-month job and the company had no issues with the attachments, despite their heavy workload. As a result, Craddock was immediately converted to Rotar. Collins Demolition is now increasing its Rotar fleet due to an increased demand for demolition work. Their current job is at a former Primark site at Magna Park in Leicestershire. Collins Demolition is working for contractor PD Industrial, which provide the installation of industrial racking and shelving systems, and dilapidation work and refitting. The job involves carrying out the internal deconstruction of an enormous former Primark warehouse. This

The company is using two more new Rotar attachments – a Rotar RSS30 Scrap Shear and a Rotar RG37 Grab. Working together these two new additions to their fleet are making light work of ripping down the mezzanine floor and are testament to the company’s commitment to working with Rotar in the long term. So much so that they are now looking at future purchases, firstly a Shear for their Volvo 300 machine early in the New Year and a smaller multi-purpose attachment. They are also looking at a first high reach machine in the first quarter of 2017, again a Volvo. “I’ve been converted to Rotar. Their demolition attachments are the best on the UK market and we wouldn’t look anywhere else. They are robust, powerful and extremely hard working. We rarely have any problems with them. I’d recommend them to anyone,” Scott Craddock concludes. “I wouldn’t change them for the world – except the fact that we paint all our attachments blue to match our logo.” Rotar’s strapline is ‘get the red crush’. In this case Collins Demolition is getting the blue crush.

clearance between the rear fenders and tires, allowing greater access when fitting tire chains, thereby reducing the risk of damage to the body of the machine. The L350H is equipped with the latest technology dedicated to reducing fuel consumption and engine emissions. Volvo’s Fully Automatic Power Shift (FAPS) system allows for machine operation in the optimal, fuel efficient, gear, according to speed, kick-down and engine braking, enhancing fuel efficiency. This is complimented by an ecopedal, with a push-back mechanism that engages when engine rpm is about to exceed the most economic operating range. Sensing the resistance, the operator can then reduce the pressure and continue within the fuel-efficient range. However, if full engine speed is needed, the eco-pedal mechanism can be overridden. New from the inside out, the L350H has been built with operator comfort in mind. The industryleading Volvo cab boasts excellent visibility, minimal noise and vibration levels, as well as Automatic Climate Control (ACC), to ensure an always comfortable climate in the cab.

Rammer's Biggest Just Got Better Visitors to the ConExpo exhibition were the first to see the latest version of Rammer’s largest hydraulic hammer.

Called the Rammer 9033, the new model replaces the highly successful Rammer 7013 and benefits from a number of key changes and improvements, many of which have been proven in smaller Rammer hammers. These improvements include: • A 20 percent wider carrier weight range than the Rammer 7013 • A 22 percent higher input power which significantly increases impact rate and productivity compared to its predecessor These improvements have been achieved by equipping the new Rammer 9033 with many of the key features recently applied to other models in the Rammer Large and Medium ranges. ”Our engineers have applied lessons learned on other hammer models to place this Rammer hammer at the very top of its class,” says Rammer’s general manager Rafa López. “The Rammer 9033 completes the successful Rammer Large hammers family by replacing the aged 7013 with a modern design that extends some of the specifications such as carrier range allowed and tool diameter.”

Impact rate on the long stroke setting rises from a maximum of 450 blows per minute to 520, while maximum oil flow rises to 460 litres per minute against the 400 litres per minute on the Rammer 7013. Input power is up from 113 to 138 kW, a rise of 22 percent.

Stroke length and Idle Blow Protection can be easily adjusted to allow the Rammer 9033 to be purpose-matched to individual applications. The long stroke setting uses a lower blow frequency for optimum breaking in hard materials, such as granite and reinforced concrete foundations, while the short stroke setting delivers higher blow frequency which is ideal for softer materials,

KIT TALK such as limestone. The Idle Blow Protector on/off selector allows the operator to easily adjust the working mode to protect against idle strokes. Like the other models in Rammer’s Large Range of hydraulic hammers, the new 9033 is designed for a long, trouble-free life. The new model utilises long-life, high-tension VIDAT tie rods for improved reliability and lower operating costs. The toolretaining pins are locked by simple, reliable rubber rings, while the surface of the lower tool bushing has been specifically designed to provide longer tool life. The Rammer 9033 also becomes the latest (and final) model in the Rammer Large Range to benefit from the addition of the Ramvalve overflow protection system. The Ramvalve monitors the oil flow through the hammer. If the oil flow exceeds the pre-defined setting, the valve adjusts the flow to a very low level and drops the hammer’s impact rate. Upgraded Cat Wheel Loader Caterpillar has announced the availability of the Cat 950 GC Wheel Loader for sale in North America and Europe.

The 950 GC is now configured to meet EU Stage IV emissions regulations for use in North America and Europe. The loader is well-suited for stockpiling, load-and-carry work, hopper charging and truck loading. On construction projects the 950 GC excels in site preparation, backfilling, general cleanup, medium duty pipe handling and material handling with pallet forks or a material handling arm. Caterpillar’s Z-bar loader linkage on the 950 GC delivers digging capabilities and breakout force through the use of Cat Performance Series buckets and load sensing hydraulics, which provide on-demand hydraulic flow and pressure for the implement system only in the amount

necessary to perform the task at hand. The 950 GC also offers a hinge pin height of 4,188 mm and 3,649 mm loader arm clearance for easy loading of high-wall trailers and charging of large hoppers. A range of available work tools include Performance Series buckets, which boast a long floor, wide opening and curved side plates. The design enables operators of all experience levels to routinely attain 10 percent higher bucket fill factors as compared to legacy designs, ultimately improving cycle times and reducing fuel consumption. The Cat Fusion quick coupler and controls are also available, allowing the 950 GC to use a number of Cat work tools across



KIT TALK multiple wheel loader models for added versatility. The quick-coupler control arrangement includes a dual tilt kick-out system for bucket return-to-dig and fork operations, selectable from the cab. The Cat C7.1 ACERT engine generates a maximum power rating of 180 kW and meets EU Stage IV emissions standards with a fully automatic and passive regeneration system. This system lowers operating costs without the need for an ash service interval and has an overall DEF consumption of just two to three percent of fuel burned. No operator intervention is required, nor is there an impact to jobsite productivity. The Engine Idle Management System, Engine Idle Shutdown and on demand cooling fan further optimise fuel efficiency while lowering operating sound levels. The 4F/3R electronically controlled

countershaft, power-shift transmission, designed and built by Caterpillar, features high contact ratio gears to insure long life and enhanced resale value. The interface panel display contains six analoglike gauges, coloured indicator lights and an LCD screen, all within easy view of the operator for safe and ergonomic use. Low-effort, pilot-operated implement controls, along with optional joystick implement control, feature an integrated kickdown switch and a remote directional shift switch for convenient use. The intuitive control system offers simple monitoring of machine systems and lends to the quick learning of loader operation, even for the operator with only a few hours in the seat.

JCB pioneered telescopic technology with the launch of the Loadall nearly 40 years ago and today it’s the biggest selling telescopic handler in the world. Nearly 25 years ago JCB also introduced another innovation: the industry’s first single-arm – or ‘Powerboom’ – skid steer, taking safety to new levels. Now the company has taken its drive for innovative product solutions a stage further by combining both technologies into one to produce the JCB Teleskid: a skid steer and track loader complete with a telescopic boom. The JCB Teleskid has an unrivalled forward reach of 2.4 metres. With a lift height of four metres, the JCB Teleskid can reach eight percent higher than any other skid steer in the world. “The JCB Teleskid can do the work of four machines – a telescopic handler, masted forklift, compact loader and a skid steer, all in one easily-serviced machine,” Burnhope adds. “The telescopic boom will allow operators to load trucks without a ramp, reach over kerbing and dig below ground, all with clear visibility of the attachment.”

The JCB Teleskid will be on the only skid steer on the market which is able to combine vertical and radial lift capability. A unique bucket-positioning levelling system allows the bucket level to be set and maintained throughout the boom’s range of movement. The JCB Teleskid will feature a fully enclosed cab that is 33 percent larger than industry average, and JCB’s myCHOICE software, allowing control responsiveness and joystick sensitivity to be tailored to suit operator preferences. A 55 kW JCB Ecomax engine will provide high torque at a low RPM and ensure compliance with Tier 4 Final / Stage IIIB emissions standards. Tracked and wheeled Teleskid models will be sold in North America, while European markets will be offered the wheeled variant which is most popular in that region. A Winning Combi Atlas Copco has unveiled the new CombiCutter CC 7000 which is designed specifically for heavy demolition applications. Suitable for carriers in the 58 to 85 tonne operating weight class, the new CombiCutter CC 7000, benefits from an upgraded design that makes it a reliable partner at the toughest demolition sites. Thanks to the design of the undercarriage, the DX10Z provides excellent lifting capacities for this size of excavator, combined with a maximum digging depth of 1.82 metres and a machine weight of 1,176 kg.

The workgroup of the DX10Z excavator features a cylinder-over-boom design, so that the cylinder cannot be damaged. The hoses for the auxiliary hydraulics are routed inside the boom to prevent any damage when working. These two features enhance the machine’s durability.

With plenty of room for the operator’s legs, lower machine noise and variable-position joysticks, the DX10Z is a very easy machine to operate. The position of the joystick controls on the DX10Z can be adjusted to suit different operators. Both left and right consoles, which serve as comfortable arm rests, need to be lowered and locked in order to operate the machine. Thanks to a standard second speed range, the DX10Z is able to move quickly around job sites, complete projects faster and work more efficiently.

Particular attention has been made to ensure easy service access: with a single access point for the daily maintenance of the main components, for checking the fuel gauge and refuelling through the lockable cap. The DX10Z is powered by the Kubota D722 engine − one of the best known in the miniexcavator segment. This provides proven reliability, as well as low vibration and noise levels, which are a must when working in confined areas.

The hydraulically expandable undercarriage provides the DX10Z with one of the widest stances in the mini-excavator segment. When it is extended, the width of the square footprint becomes 1100 mm, providing unsurpassed stability. The workgroup features a box structure design, providing strength while minimising the overall weight of the workgroup.

The cooling system delivers best-in-class performance − which is critical when working in spacially restricted areas where air flow may be minimal. When the machine is frequently used with a hydraulic breaker, the ‘demolition kit’ provides extra cooling so the breaker can be used continuously, even in warm environments. This is unique in the market, and makes this model ideal for indoor demolition projects.

KIT TALK OCL Regeneration look to RK6 for Crushing and Screening Solutions Specialist aggregate recycling company OCL Regeneration Ltd has recently taken delivery of new crushing and screening equipment from machinery distributor Red Knight 6 Ltd. The equipment, which includes a RUBBLE MASTER RM100GO! impact crusher and an Anaconda DF410 screener, are to be utilised across the UK in OCL’s extensive fleet of machines. The main objective is for crushing asphalt to -20mm then screening the required products with any oversize going back to the crusher. The material is then used in OCL’s national ex-situ stabilisation works during the manufacture of Foambase™ and HBM to national standards. On the purchase of his new equipment, Mr. Stuart Gready, MD of OCL Regeneration Ltd commented, “We run some of the best equipment in the industry to meet our requirements and needed to add another supplier into the chain. Watched by the Brigade Brigade Electronics will be launching their NEW 3G enabled digital recording system at the CV show this year. The new mobile digital recording system (MDR) allows operators to remotely access footage and other vehicle information such as speed and location in real time. The new service allows operators remote access and live streaming

of footage from up to eight vehicle mounted cameras. Immediate access to data is invaluable; in the event of an incident, to refute claims, asses which party is culpable and reassure drivers in the event of an emergency. The managed service includes a 3G SIM card and access to Brigade’s hosted server. By hosting the service, Brigade is able to identify any SIM or network issues through remote diagnostics, saving the customer valuable time and resource. Customers have the choice to access footage via the Brigade dashboard or by downloading the app on their phones. Brigade will also be releasing their improved Sidescan. Following feedback of driver annoyance, the buzzer now silences when there is no danger present and resumes once motion is detected. A new optional extra is the Sidescan OSD Module

which provides the driver with an onscreen display of the detection area. In addition to these new products, Brigade is also able to offer a costeffective leasing solution which enables fleet operators to spread the cost of vehicle safety devices, especially where large amounts of equipment are required for site specifications and tenders. “The great thing about leasing is that unlike hire purchases it actually makes products cheaper because payments are fully deductible against pre-tax profits thereby reducing payments in real terms. So for instance the capital cost of £25,000 is reduced by £1,190 once tax relief has been applied,” concludes Brigade’s marketing manager, Emily Hardy. “When our customers realise the savings they are making they tell us that they can’t afford not to lease products, leaving valuable capital for more strategic purposes.”
