DEMOLITION The industry magazine like no other

INSITE This time three years ago, we were putting the finishing touches to our first-ever Demolition magazine. It was a bold step; an untested trek into what we were assured was a saturated market. But look at us now. Since that first magazine – resplendent in its all-black cover – hit demolition desks, we have published dozens more editions. We have published four books, launched an online TV channel dedicated to demolition and demolition equipment and – most recently – we have unveiled a new (free) subscription-only magazine called Kit Talk. And by the time you read this, the second edition of our Yearbook/ Directory will be rolling off the production line at our printers, ready to despatch to its 100,000+ readers. And we’re not done yet. Our Twitter, Facebook and YouTube presence continues to grow and reach a wider (and often younger) audience. And our (relatively) new Instagram account has already racked up 3,000 followers in a few short weeks, such is our reach and penetration of the global demolition industry. January 2017 will see us unveil yet another bold new initiative designed to make our content more accessible to even more demolition professionals whilst creating a more informed industry. In short, 2017 will bring more. More magazines, more books, more video. We will be covering big overseas exhibitions like ConExpo and smaller local shows like PlantworX to keep you abreast of the latest developments in the field of demolition equipment. We will be calling upon the expertise of some of the biggest and bestknown names in the industry to share their expertise and insight. And, above all, we will be inclusive. Whether you own a demolition company, prepare risk assessments, provide training, drive a digger or marshal traffic; whether you’re here in the UK or overseas; and whether you belong to a trade organisation or not. You are welcome here and you are welcome to everything that we produce. We wish you all a safe, prosperous, independent and informed New Year.

Creating the Risk of Harm Lee Singleton, Health & Safety Consultant from Academy Consulting takes a look at what the new health and safety sentencing guidelines might entail, specifically in respect of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 the individuals responsible for making decisions that lead to risk of harm as it is on bodies corporate. As a statutory instrument to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA), CDM2015 places multi-layered duties throughout the chain of responsibility that are perhaps not apparent at face value. With no case law or Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) currently in place to support CDM2015 there is a degree of uncertainty and wariness in the industry, primarily due to the custodial sentences that can now be handed down to individuals for offences.

When it comes to health and safety, there are many people working in construction who are not fully aware of where and how they and their organisations fit in the chain of responsibility. On 1st February this year, the New Sentencing Guidelines for Health and Safety Offences, Corporate Manslaughter and Food Safety and Hygiene (NSG) came into effect, with a host of changes that affect all sectors of business and industry. In construction, we also saw the introduction of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM2015) in April last year. As many now know and appreciate, CDM2015 places more of the onus for health and safety risk management on the clients and has removed the statutory client advisor role of CDM Co-ordinator. NSG is certainly focused as much on punishing

4

The Sentencing Council, the legal fraternity and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conclude that there have been major disparities in sentencing for offences committed under the HSWA. It is generally acknowledged that these disparities have occurred because so few health and safety offences end in prosecution that magistrates and judges have not received sufficient exposure to such cases. Therefore sentencing has been on a very subjective basis, leading to inconsistency.

STUFF In a nutshell, NSG is a set of clearly defined parameters to guide sentencing for these offences into a more consistent format.

to the HSE, such as prohibition notices, for those failures not resulting in harm seems unlikely.

When it comes to defining harm itself, the critical statement in NSG is as follows:

Keith Morton QC of Temple Garden Chambers describes why admitting guilt and liability in any fashion since the introduction of the new guidelines might not seem so appealing:

Health and safety offences are concerned with failures to manage risks to health and safety and do not require proof that the offence caused any actual harm. The offence is in creating a risk of harm. (NSG, 2016) This offence of ‘creating the risk of harm, not actually causing harm’ is not commonly understood in construction. However, prosecution rather than other means available

“The proposed guidelines follow what the Sentencing Council itself describes as a “small scale” research exercise based largely on press reports. Nevertheless, the council has concluded that there is some inconsistency in sentencing of individuals. Unsurprisingly, the Council suggests that unless the risk of harm is very low all cases of deliberate breach (the highest category of culpability) should result in an immediate custodial sentence. Where, however, there will be a marked change in practice (which is contrary to the Council’s intention) is in relation to any case which engages the high harm category (which includes cases where there is a risk of death). In such a case, negligent conduct will be sufficient to result in a custodial sentence. The difficulty with this is that conduct short of negligence ought not to result in a conviction. It is, therefore, hard if not impossible to envisage a case in practice which could result in a conviction or guilty plea but which nevertheless meets the proposed definition of low culpability.” Taking account of the above statement, one could believe that in the event that harm is caused and prosecution sought there may now be no mileage in entering a guilty plea in the hope of saving the court’s time in expectation of just a fine. Pleading guilty could be enough for the court to assess the individuals responsible as negligent and subject to a custodial sentence depending on the level of risk or actual harm.

Hand in Glove

A Demolition magazine reader has kindly put a pair of Polyco’s new impact resistant work gloves through their paces for us. Here’s his thoughts.

Here at Demolition News Towers, we often receive stuff from manufacturers keen to have their products featured in these pages. The trouble is – with the possible exception of a coffee mug or a USB memory stick - we don’t really get the opportunity to test out many of these products as we spend most of our time tucked up safe and sound in a nice comfy office.

8

And so when work glove specialist POLYCO sent us a pair of their latest gloves, we decided that they needed a real test. And who better to test them than a man who spends much of his working life man-handling scrap steel? This then is the review of the gloves by Lee Windell of Tattershall Scrap Metals: “After a month of putting POLYCO gloves through Hell, I have found them

STUFF to be very robust. They are very comfortable to wear and - sorry to use the pun but - they fit like a glove. Unlike other extreme use gloves they give your hand freedom of movement with very little restriction. The velcro strap around the wrist helps keep the glove in place with no slip and is slightly elasticated to mould to you. After dealing with scrap metal every day normal run of the mill gloves start to produce holes at the finger tips and under the thumb area within a week. But so far, these POLYCO gloves have no signs of holes, rips or tears and the rubber palm coating has plenty of life left.

The only downside I have found with these is that, after a couple of weeks, the stitching holding the second extra wear layer under the thumb started to come undone. But the layer is still intact. Maybe add a second or third round of stitches in that area might make them last even longer. CIRCULAR Travis Perkins plc has collaborated with a team of designers on a revolutionary new method of construction; where materials are sourced, built then recycled and reused as part of a continuing process aimed at improving quality of living in the future. The experiment could prove to be the first stage in the development of an End of Life plan for UK housing stock that has long been the wish of demolition industry leaders. Travis Perkins plc partnered with ARUP - an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists – alongside Frener &

Reifer, BAM and The Built Environment at this year’s London Design Week. Together they designed and developed a Circular Building prototype, which has allowed the partners to investigate how the circular economy can benefit the industry and the built environment. TICKLE TIME The latest addition to Liston Group’s equipment portfolio has been put in safe hands. Mark Anthony reports.

Joining existing Volvo 25 tonne excavators rigged for secondary demolition duties, the new 51 tonne EC380E takes over from an EC360D high reach machine and was chosen after several factors were considered by managing director Tony McLean. These included the reliability and performance of the former model, an enhanced specification with extra reach offered on the E variant, good after sales support and an all-round competitive package. In charge of the latest recruit is John Healy – known as Mr Tickle for his ability to tickle structures to the ground - who has specialised in operating ultra-high reach demolition machines for the past 15 years. “In that time I’ve pretty much operated most makes and sizes but I have to say I’m very impressed with the Volvo. It certainly has the best cab on the market in terms of comfort and all the controls and layout of the functions have been well thought out. Another useful feature is the swing open FOGS guard making it easy to clean the windscreen,” Healy says. “The extra two metres of reach over the EC360D is an added bonus and I’ve got excellent visibility at the working end thanks to two cameras installed on the demolition arm as well as rear and sideways cameras mounted on the machine’s superstructure, all relayed back to the large 8” LCD monitor in the cab.” And watching John at work one quickly understands how he gained his nick-name as material is gently removed and brought down – essential in confined areas working close to nearby buildings and structures. “The hydraulic control of the equipment is excellent,” Healy continues. “I’m really impressed with the machine’s smoothness and response.” The EC380E is installed with a Stage IV

Volvo’s unique ECO mode contributes up to nine percent of the machine’s total improved efficiency over the D model– without any loss of performance in most operating conditions. As well as improving fuel efficiency, this increases controllability for more precise performance. The maximum pin height of the three-piece high reach equipment is 23 metres and the maximum forward reach measures 14.5 metres. Opting for the standard fixed undercarriage means the maximum tool weight the machine can handle is 2.5 tonnes. Other features fitted as standard include hose rupture valves fitted to all the equipment’s hydraulic cylinders; SIPS (side impact protection system) rails along the machine’s superstructure; boom cylinder heavy duty protection guard; heavy duty belly plates and X3 proportional rotation line to operate rotating selector grabs and shears. mixed emotions A love of demolition or a love of your favourite football team. That was the choice facing the Demolition editor when the former home of his beloved West Ham United was slated for demolition. A teary-eyed Mark Anthony reports.

It has long puzzled me why local residents get so emotional about the proposed demolition of a derelict old building; buildings that are falling down and dilapidated; that are long past their sell-by date; that have become an embarrassing eyesore and a blot on the landscape; and that are to be replaced with something newer and better. It doesn’t puzzle me any longer.

First Love

I first went to a match at the Boleyn Ground (or Upton Park as it is better – but wrongly – known) on 12 January 1974. My father took me to see West Ham United – already my team of choice – take on Manchester United. With the score at 1-1 and ten minutes left to play, my father decided we

ON SITE should leave early to “beat the traffic”. By the time we had walked back up Green Street to where my father had parked the car, West Ham had scored again to secure an important victory. I have never left a football match early ever since, even though there have been countless times when that might have been the most appropriate course of action.

the far post. Trevor Sinclair caught the cross with a spectacular scissor kick that sent the ball flying into the goal. As the ball hit the back of the net, I threw my youngest son Fred into the air as the players gathered to celebrate just a few feet away. Fred is 21 now; he took the photos for this feature; he’s six foot one tall and outweighs me by at least a stone. I will not be throwing him again any time soon.

Over the years, I must have visited the Boleyn hundreds of times, first with my father, then with my friends, and latterly with my two sons. I have had the privilege of watching some of the greatest players ever to wear the familiar claret and blue strip: Bobby Moore; Billy Bonds; Trevor Brooking; Alan Devonshire; Frank McAvennie; Tony Cottee; Julian Dicks; Paolo di Canio; and Mark Noble.

Untrained Eye

Like the 30,000+ long-suffering band of West Ham regulars, I have enjoyed a pint or two at The Boleyn. I have dined upon the “botulism on a bun” offered up by the countless burger vans in and around the stadium. I have marched towards the ground filled with hope and expectation; and I have trudged back again vowing never to return after yet another poor performance, only to repeat the entire exercise seven days later. And I have sung “I’m forever blowing bubbles” until I was hoarse as West Ham clinched an unexpected victory.

It was here that I witnessed the greatest goal I ever saw live. It was Boxing Day 2001 and West Ham were taking on Derby County. Myself, my father and my two sons were in the Sir Trevor Brooking stand. Paolo di Canio struck a corner to the edge of the penalty area where Joe Cole controlled it and volleyed it to

But now that is all at an end. There is no question that the Boleyn

ON SITE Ground had seen better days. Although new stands had been added and improvements had been made over the years, large swathes of the ground dated back to its opening in 1904. To the untrained eye of the visiting supporter, the stadium was several decades overdue on an appointment with the wrecking ball. But to generations of die-hard West Ham fans, that was a part of the ground’s appeal. Like the team, it was humble and working class to its core. And the fact that it resided in a part of London so grotty that it gives grotty a bad name simply made the tatty and fraying-at-the-seams venue an integral part of the local landscape.

Stadium was inevitable if a long time coming. Although its detractors say that it is not a football stadium, the club’s new home is a vast improvement. It is shiny and new and it encapsulates everything the modern game demands. But to witness the slow demise of the Boleyn Ground is akin to shooting an old faithful dog; necessary but painful almost beyond imagination.

The company have recently played a big part in the changing landscape of Liverpool with high profile demolition jobs on the likes of the redevelopment of the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the clearing of Wolstenholme Square, where the world famous Cream nightclub once stood, to make way for a £40 million pound mixed use development by the Elliott Group.

Plans for the 1970s building include a complete overhaul of the building’s façade, the installation of feature lighting throughout and, subject to planning, an addition of two further floors and roof terrace. “We were that impressed with the site and its fantastic location that we have now taken offices here ourselves and made this our Liverpool Head Office,” says managing director Thomas Mee. 95 16/04/2013 15:46 Page 95 “We see the business district of Liverpool

Robust LiuGong machines assist with Keltbray’s construction requirements

Keltbray is a leading UK specialist business, which offers engineering, construction, demolition, decommissioning, remediation, rail, environmental services and reinforced concrete frame solutions. This year the company is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In the space of four decades, it has become a £300 million group of companies, and is currently the largest demolition contractor in Europe.

It is a business which has contributed towards some of the most high-profile construction projects in the capital, such as The Shard, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Stadium, St Pancras International, Crossrail, Earls Court and Battersea Power Station to name but a few.

The challenge

The Group’s largest business division is Keltbray Demolition & Civil Engineering, where the on-site work environments can be harsh and projects long-term and complex. In these types of environments, high-performance, robust machines are required. Keltbray also aims to be as fuelefficient as possible. Tom McNulty, Plant Manager at Keltbray, commented on the desire for the company to find a manufacturer who prioritised safety, durability and fuel efficiency: “Although Keltbray has been named as one of the first to comply with London’s extension of the Low Emission Zone; ensuring that its plants and machinery are fully compliant with the new engine emissions standards, we wanted to take this up a notch and find a manufacturer who went above and beyond to minimise fuel consumption – we found a good match in LiuGong.”

KIT TALK First-class machines offered by LiuGong

LiuGong is a manufacturer of world-class machines which are easy to own, operate and maintain. In order for Keltbray to meet their growing order book of demolition projects and maintain their drive to reduce fuel usage, the company decided to invest in a range of new machines. In June 2015, the first order of LiuGong machines arrived. This consisted of three 922E, three 925E, and two 856IV machines. Keltbray has been pleased with the overall performance and productivity of the equipment, and consequently extended their order to include a further four 365B and four 385B Skidsteers in January 2016.

How LiuGong’s machines made their mark

LiuGong was able to meet the bespoke specifications required for Keltbray to complete the jobs effectively and efficiently. Tom added: “It was reassuring to know that the machine specifications would be accurate. This gave us peace of mind.” Within the bespoke package came 360 degree cameras to maximise safety and visibility, as well as working load monitors to assist with machine stability; another priority for Keltbray. LiuGong’s machines have also demonstrated a high degree of robustness in Keltbray’s demolition operations. Tom commented: “We have been pleased with the durability of LiuGong’s machines, specifically the newly upgraded E-series excavators.” Keltbray is the first European company to order the newly upgraded 925E series excavators, which has been constructed with thick plates of high tensile strength steel to ensure high resistance to torsional stress. Not only has Keltbray been impressed with the sturdiness and high productivity of the

machines, but Tom also revealed that “a three year fixed 6,000-hour maintenance agreement that was also part of the agreement, played a key role in selecting LiuGong as the manufacturer of choice.” In this modern climate, fuel efficiency plays an increasingly important role in construction. “For us, customer costs are reduced through a combination of low fuel consumption and reliable machine performance. As part of our commitment to the environment we aim to reduce our carbon footprint. The newly upgraded excavators are helping us meet this criteria,” explained Tom. Keltbray’s investment in the 922E and 925E was an environmentally sound one. With the newer models, fuel consumption has been cut by 8% and 5% respectively. This is due to the machine’s fuel-efficient, world-class Cummins engine and a patented turbo-charger, which together precisely match engine and load demand, resulting in optimum performance output for Keltbray.

Maintenance Ease

Heavy duty machines must be effectively maintained to continue working at maximum productivity. “All of the machines ordered were built to facilitate our maintenance requirements. The engines are easily accessible, reversible cooling fans also mean that cleaning can be completed with ease, while the machines’ fault diagnostic system allow for fast and accurate maintenance support,” Tom added. “We had high expectations for a good aftersales service from a renowned company like LiuGong and CPMS, exclusive dealer in UK, but this has been exceeded in the way that they communicate and solve problems for us. A chief priority for

We spoke to Warrington-based attachment specialists ECY Haulmark and they were able to offer us a unique engineering solution to adapt their OilQuick system to suit our Brokk 160.” Having installed the OilQuick automatic quick couplers Bradley Demolition is clearly delighted with the results. The company’s Brokk operator can

now automatically change between hydraulically powered attachments such as a breaker, concrete crusher or grab in around fifteen seconds, where as previously a manual change would take around fifteen to twenty minutes with the operator and environment at risk of coming into contact with hydraulic oil spillages. With OilQuick the risk of oil contamination is fully eliminated and costly downtime avoided. Being a positive engagement system OilQuick also eliminates any hanging hoses which pose a threat to safety and are expensive to replace if burst or snagged.

The Premiertrak R400 has an output potential of up to 400 tonnes per hour with excellent reduction capability, is extremely user-friendly and is economical to operate due to a highly efficient direct drive system. The R400 has numerous design and build benefits for both ease of maintenance and operational efficiency, plus tracked mobility on site and a quick set-up time – typically under 30 minutes.

Britaniacrest’s new crusher is processing around 3,500 tonnes a week, predominantly hardcore, concrete and demolition debris that form part of the waste stream which enters the company’s waste transfer stations. The crushing process produces a variety of sized and specified end-products, largely type 1 aggregate and 6f2. One of the attractions of the R400, says Britaniacrest, is its transportability, which allows the company to make use of the crusher on their site of choice, plus a high output and the considerable environmental benefit of comparatively quiet operation. Icy Grip of the Plant Thieves

With the dark nights upon us, construction plant tracking specialist AMI Group is warning plant owners and hirers that plant machinery is more at risk of theft than ever during the winter months. “It really is vital that plant security is increased during the winter, especially over Christmas when sites are often shut for two weeks and kit is parked up unoccupied - a fact that criminals will be well aware of. We always see a trend of more machines being stolen during the winter as the dark, wet conditions present more opportunities for plant thieves to steal equipment. Because construction sites and depots are often located in remote, poorly lit areas, criminals can hide under the cover of darkness,” says Peter Stockton, Operations Director of AMI Group. “We offer a range of costeffective plant tracking devices which can assist the safe return of plant machinery

in the unfortunate event of it being stolen. This small investment can pay dividends, as the money spent on increasing security measures can be quickly recovered through insurance discounts, reduced claims and less downtime.” Virtually on a daily basis AMI Group is helping customers across the UK to locate and recover stolen equipment as a result of the use of state-of-the-art tracking devices which utilise GPS (Global Positioning System), GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and RF (Radio Frequency) technology. Once an AMI tracking device is fitted to a piece of machinery, customers can logon to the AMI Nexis web-based portal to establish its destination in the event of it being stolen. Over £245 million worth of customer assets are now protected with AMI Group systems, including several of the UK’s national plant hirers and construction companies. As well as helping AMI customers recover their own plant, the company’s tracking systems have also helped the Police to recover thousands of pounds of construction equipment not protected with an anti-theft deterrent.

KIT TALK

Don’t Knock It Bringing heavy-duty demolition down to size is the job of two Volvo excavators – in the hands of deconstruction experts, Skillings Crushing Construction.

Few sights are as captivating as seeing a great hulking block of concrete being neatly folded onto its footprint after having been dismantled by demolition professionals. Its a scene familiar to David Skillings, owner of UK-based company Skillings Crushing Construction, as he presides over his company’s latest jobsite. A reinforced concrete wall towers over the plot at a height of five meters. After just a moment or two of resistance, the concrete starts to melt away like a slab of butter on a hot day. “Proper kit, that is,” Skillings says in his distinct Lancastrian accent, motioning to the Volvo excavators that have levelled the jobsite. “The machines have never been beaten by

58

anything they’ve tackled.” The two Volvo excavators are dismantling four clean water-storage tanks near Doncaster, in the northeast of England. The foundations are also being drilled out to prepare the site for housing. Such projects are the bread and butter of Skillings’ business. Established nearly two decades ago by Skillings and his wife, Jan, the Burnley-based company built its reputation in the UK as a demolition and remediation specialist for large-scale projects. Experienced in the world of construction, Skillings set out on his own after spending his early career working for other firms. “I was lucky,” Skillings says modestly. “When I started out alone, the idea of building new homes on brownfield sites was just taking off. I was well connected to a contracting remediation company, so there was plenty of work right from the start.” Plenty of work called for a strong team and an equally strong fleet of machines. Today, the company employs 17 people, who Skillings credits for the company’s

KIT TALK continued success. “I am blessed with good men,” he says. “They all want to do well for the company – it’s all about doing a good, safe job.” Skillings’ employees operate a fleet of 20 machines, including excavators, two crushers and a tracked dozer.

reinforced Volvo excavators in Skillings’ fleet. Over the years, they have worked on a huge variety of projects, ranging from office blocks, factories and paper mills to power stations, nuclear bunkers and bombproof hangars at U.S. Cold War airbases.

In the beginning, Skillings recalls: “I had been buying cheaper, new machines, but as prices increased, I thought: ‘Why not buy the better equipment?’”

Two of the larger excavators (EC700C and EC300E) work in unison, reducing thousands of tonnes of concrete to a mound of rubble without effort or pause. Bringing down the walls is the work of the 70-tonne EC700C while, the Volvo EC300E crushes the concrete into more manageable pieces and separates the mangled steel reinforcing bars. Both machines are fitted with quick-fit, hydraulic rotating pulverizers or ‘munchers’ that rotate 360 degrees, ensuring the material is held firmly in the pulveriser’s jaws.

Skillings’ first Volvo EC700 excavator was used to tackle a high-profile job in London. “It had done about 3,000 hours, and we also bought a hammer to tackle meter-thick reinforced concrete slabs and foundations,” he says. “It was a breakthrough. The job went really well, and the machine never missed a beat. We then knew we had the firepower to sort anything out.” The EC700 is one of seven specially

variety of aggregate products for reuse. Each year, the company deals with around 400,000 m3, weighing 800,000 tonnes. The company processes the material onsite, which means fewer truck movements, saved fuel and reduced carbon emissions.

Ian Watkinson operates the Volvo EC700C excavator. “I love them, they’re fantastic,” he muses. “They sit really well, whatever the terrain, and make you feel safe. Turn on the key and machine starts instantly and every time.”

Ensuring the machines retain optimum uptime and long-term performance is Bill Holcroft, Volvo CE sales manager for northwest England, who supplied Skillings with his first full-service warranty. “This type of work is hard on machines,” says Holcroft. “With our warranty, Skillings is benefiting from the strength of the Volvo service network across the country.”

Operating an excavator is a demanding job that requires full concentration. To work safely and maintain high levels of productivity, Skillings explains that one of the excavators’ most important features is their high level of comfort, which enables the operators to meet the full potential of their productivity without distraction. Fellow operator Matt Wright echoes Watkinson’s sentiments. Among his favourite features are the smooth hydraulics, responsive controls and cab comfort. “I’m generally working on concrete, but the cab dampers and the air-seat mean there are no aches and pains at the end of the day,” Wright says. “And if you don’t get tired, you don’t make mistakes.”

In addition to maintenance, rapid parts supply and technical help, Skillings ranks job satisfaction high on his list when choosing his brand of equipment. “I listen to the guys,” says Skillings. “They have to be happy with the equipment.”

KIT TALK The 250 x 330 mm Multi Cutter is 1.02 metres long and can be used on machines weighing 1.2 to 2.8 metric tonnes, including the Brokk 100, 120 D and 160 models. It brings flexibility to the jobsite with its slim profile, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces, such as building interiors where Brokk machines excel due to their electric operation and compact size. The attachment also features a hydraulic 360-degree rotary drive for exact positioning and a 200 millimetre wide jaw opening, able to handle a variety of metals. It weighs only 130 kilograms, yet uses a hydraulic booster to exert 50 tons

of cutting force at 3,900 psi (270 bars) to easily cut through steel. To reduce costs to the end user, Darda also designed the MC200 Multi Cutter so operators can sharpen the jaws rather than replace them. “We developed the MC200 Multi Cutter in conjunction with Darda because there was no reasonably priced cutter or shear on the market for our smaller machines,” says Lars Lindgren, Brokk’s president. “This new tool opens the door to operators who need the compact size and light weight of our smaller Brokk machines, but the force to cut through steel. Plus, the new attachment expands the variety of services

KIT TALK contractors can offer by increasing the number of attachments available for our smaller models.” The MC200 Multi Cutter, combined with the smaller Brokk machines’ remote capabilities and arms that extend as far as five metres, allows contractors to easily cut beams, cable, supply lines and steel pipes in hard-to-reach areas. This improves efficiency and minimizes labour costs. The attachment, paired with a Brokk machine, reduces the risk of injury to workers by eliminating the need to climb scaffolds and ladders with handheld tools. The Multi

Cutter also alleviates the risk of injury from open-flame torches, which are a common but dangerous method for cutting steel. This traditional approach can also create fire hazards and increase the risk of exposure to harmful emissions. The MC200 Multi Cutter is one of nearly 20 Brokk attachments that operators can quickly interchange for greater versatility on a jobsite. Brokk supplies a wide range of remote-controlled machinery and attachments around the world to maximise productivity, improve efficiency and promote safety.

KIT TALK The use of impactors in the UK market has significantly increased in the last number of years and RUBBLE MASTER is leading this change. Why?

The technology behind impactors has come a long way and RUBBLE MASTER is a clear example of this. Starting 25 years ago, RUBBLE MASTER are now at the leading edge of impactor innovations. The RUBBLE MASTER pride in their brand is evident as the development and design improvement is what they specialise in. RUBBLE MASTER, under the leadership of Gerald Hanisch, spend every working day looking at how they can better their product to provide for an ever-increasing market. To quote Gerald, “processing mineral materials is more than business to us, it is a way of life”. With low running costs and high volumes an impactor is the perfect machine to process numerous different applications. For example, if you take RUBBLE MASTER RM70GO! at just 19.5 tonnes this machine will process 150 tonnes of C&D waste per hour. These are volumes that you would struggle to achieve with nearly all 30-tonne jaw crushers. How many times do we hear people asking how heavy is the crusher? Is this an indicator of the output of the crusher? This indicator is out

72

of date and not applicable if you consider impact crushers can process 150 tph from a 75mm down feedstock and a 20mm final product; there can’t be many crushers that can achieve these big outputs with smaller sizes? Let’s look at the facts about the end product. By fracturing rather than compressing, an impactor will always give you an angular product that can be essential to pass BS EN 933 – Part 3 Determination of Flakiness index. This is a certificate that is required for any concrete aggregate used in a commercial marketplace. With this angular product also comes the benefit of better compaction from your material when placed in-situ. Another huge advantage to impacting is the ability to process high volumes in asphalt applications without blockages, and “dumping” that are too often experienced when trying to use a jaw. When a jaw dumps it contaminates the whole pile with oversize. Applications include crushing glass to produce a sand this is often used as a CL 515 narrow filter drain material or a 2C Granular fill. This product can also be used as

KIT TALK a subbase for permeable block paving. Other applications include limestone, asphalt, concrete, C&D waste, waste transfer station inert materials, natural rock and ceramics to name a few. With the benefits of high volumes through a RUBBLE MASTER impactor, it enables you to get your crusher into the most awkward of sites and still achieve those high tonnages that most demolition companies are looking for. With their excellent end product quality, unique crusher box design, unparalleled operation efficiency and service and maintenance simplicity, RUBBLE MASTER lead the way in impactors and plan to do so for the future. Part of this future is the RUBBLE MASTER dealer for the UK and Ireland, Red Knight 6 Ltd (RK6), who saw the requirement for an impactor that suits the UK market. Like RUBBLE MASTER, RK6 believe in the ethos of specialising in providing its customers with extremely high performance machines. RK6 work with their customers to analyse their requirements and deliver the best solutions available for the equipment needs. Peter Bennie Director Robert Jackson explained he had always been sceptical of smaller impact crushers believing they could not output and produce as efficiently as a large jaw crusher could when it came to producing large volumes of aggregates. The RUBBLE MASTER RM90Go was brought in to replace their old 44 Tonne Pegson XA400 jaw crusher. Although it’s immediately apparent the

RM impact crusher is already excelling its predecessor by producing a higher quantity and better quality of single sized material increasing the value of the finished product at around only 24 tonnes in weight. The RM90Go has clearly already made its mark in the Bennie operation, collectively earning itself the nickname of “Barney”. Mr Jackson concluded by saying “I have been so impressed with the quantity and quality of the single sized material the RUBBLE MASTER machines produce, the addition of a RUBBLE MASTER machine has added extra value to our crushing fleet. I have to admit to being initially sceptical but the RUBBLE MASTER has convinced me to move away from the belief large jaw crushers are the answer to turning over high volumes of aggregates”. In conclusion, a RUBBLE MASTER can be a very versatile crusher that offers: • Low running costs, meaning savings for your business • A better product which means more profit • The ability to give better performance in a variety of applications. • Crushers that can operate in space restricted sites and still produce big outputs • Asphalt crushing without “dumping” • Capability in C&D waste with rebar or soft steel • Capability in processing small, single size end product • Protective mechanism for large objects • Machines available with on-board screen box and recirculation
