INSITE

An Industry of Extremes As regular readers will know, I was recently involved in a demolition accident. This has been well documented; and there’s even a video if images of facial injuries are your thing (https://youtu.be/p8L28zNhJ4U).

every demolition man that flouts the rules, cuts corners and puts the lives of others at risk, there are hundreds more that will stop at nothing to safeguard the safety of their fellow workers. For every Didcot disaster, there are hundreds if not thousands of demolition contracts that are completed safely and without a hitch.

This accident taught me a number of important lessons: Accidents truly CAN happen to anyone; it doesn’t matter how long you have been visiting sites, you are always at risk; stand back and use the zoom lens instead; bricks to the face hurt every bit as much as you might imagine.

The old adage “one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch” is a well-worn and tired cliché. But it is also correct, particularly within the demolition arena. Yes, it is a highly competitive industry. Yes, winning work is a dog eat dog business where it often appears that some would sell their own grandmother to land a contract. And yes, demolition sites are tough and unforgiving places to be at times.

But the accident also served as a timely reminder of the fact that demolition is an industry of extremes. I received literally hundreds of calls, texts, and social media messages wishing me a speedy recovery. And I was made aware of one social media post that suggested I was milking the injury to attract traffic to the DemolitionNews.com website. And doesn’t that just typify demolition?

However, if my close encounter with a low-flying brick has taught me anything, it is that demolition folks are intrinsically good; that, despite rumours to the contrary, common decency and humanity still prevails.

For every successful and prosperous DSM, Erith, Keltbray or McGee, there are dozens of other demolition companies scratching around for work, struggling to make ends meet. For every racist, sexist and homophobic site bully, there are hundreds of good, honest hard-working men who you might work with once but who will be a friend for life thereafter. For

Long before I was first handed a hard hat, I wrote about subjects as diverse as hotels and restaurant on boats. I am a journalist by training and I could, conceivably, write about anything. But even while I look like I have just gone 10 rounds with an in-his-prime Mike Tyson, I wouldn’t swap this industry for the world.

Wimbledon based NJB Recycling recently took delivery of a brand new RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO! impact crusher to help them produce and sell Type 1 & Type 2 Crushed Material. NJB are at the forefront of the Grab & Skip Hire within the London and Surrey areas. When we met NJB, they were already producing high quality recycled aggregates from reject sand to screened soil. Now with their new edition of the RUBBLE MASTER RM70 GO!, they are producing a Type 1 & Type 2 Crush, and 20mm Ballast with an aim to supply the cement industry, and furthermore, to recycle the aggregates they bring into their yard. The materials are processed and sorted at their recycling centre in Wimbledon. Pleased about his recent purchase, Jamie Bowie, MD at NJB Recycling, said… “I am absolutely delighted with the new edition to our recycling fleet of machinery. After approaching Red Knight 6 Ltd for a demonstration of the machine, we had one on site within days. We ran

and tested it extensively for 2 days and it became evident very quickly that this was the machine we needed to add value to our processed materials. I’ve known and dealt with the guys from RK6 for years and have every confidence that we will be looked after in the months and years ahead.” It all began back in 1991 when an idea came to Gerald Hanisch, founder and CEO of RUBBLE MASTER HMH GmbH. The goal was to give as many entrepreneurs as possible the chance to use mobile rubble recycling for value enhancement. It was with this innovative concept that RM created a market: on-site recycling! RM has concentrated on its core competences since the beginning: development, marketing and service for mobile crushers in the compact class. RUBBLE MASTER HMH GmbH has made a name for itself around the world with the RM Compact Crushing brand and the RM business model for profitable processing. WHAT TIME IS IT? IT’S MICK GEORGE TIME Standard Construction companies are ‘ten a penny’ and are difficult to distinguish, but it’s instantly clear to the eye, that at Mick George Ltd they do things differently and are subsequently reaping the rewards. Business is booming, with turnover up 137% over the last three years, reporting revenues of £74m for 2015, a figure that is anticipated to surpass the £100m barrier for 2016. Subsequently, operating sites have grown to 23 individual locations and an employee headcount now greater than 700 people exists.

project handover, where their Waste Management team will complete the job.

What cannot be undermined is the continuous investment throughout the business, from its contemporary new Cambridgeshire Head Office, to it’s ever extending shiny fleet of 310 commercial vehicles, right the way through to sponsorship funding of local community projects which exceeds £1.5 million each year.

Runwell Hospital Demolition Project, Essex

Over 310 commercial vehicles in their fleet Impressive numbers, and while much of the company’s success is a result of product, service or geographical expansion, the Contracting services and particularly the Demolition provision still remains the heartbeat of the business. With over 30 year’s experience, equipped with stateof-the-art technology and machinery, Mick George Ltd provides solutions for all Demolition Projects across the UK. Attention to detail is the ‘name of the game’. What may appear a relatively straight forward or repetitive process is treated with the level of commitment that any project worth doing deserves. Each job is meticulously planned, managed and executed, offering a bespoke service for every assignment. Their skilled team are well drilled in delivering efficient results, working on a Principal Contractor or Sub-Contractor basis for projects of all scales and complexity. If that’s not an attractive proposition to potential clients, then the fact that Mick George Ltd provide an all encompassing start to finish process with disconcerting ease, whilst remaining competitive, certainly is. Providing pre-tender evaluations for working practices, whilst having the ability to bolt on other services, such as, Site Clearance, Bulk Excavation, Remediation, Contamination, right through to

Don’t take our word for it! There impressive portfolio of projects and construction partnerships speak for itself. Working alongside major industry leaders on a regular basis such as Carillion, Kier, Morgan Sindall, Interserve, to name but a few, the developments span an array of industries including, House Builders, Retail Giants, Professional Football Clubs, Schools, Hospitals & Local Authorities.

Mick George Ltd were contracted to carry out demolition and extensive fly-tipped waste removal on a particularly difficult site. The works were executed efficiently, to schedule and on budget. It was a pleasure working with their team to achieve a successful start to our development Danny Clark, Senior Technical Manager at Countryside Properties (U.K) Ltd

What’s more, it’s a plant operators dream! The wealth of plant and equipment at the disposal of employees is a joy to behold and makes any ‘Mechanical Demolition’ work a simple but pleasurable task. Having spent £2.5million this year alone on Crushers, Excavators, Loading Shovels, attachments and Dust Cannons to name but a few, clearly outlines the companies intention to expand. But it’s not all about ‘toys for the boys’, the business also prides itself on getting its hands dirty too. Manual Demolition, Soft Stripping, as well as Removal and Disposal of Hazardous Waste are commonplace for Demolition projects handled by Mick George Ltd.

for a good reason. In addition to the opportunity to work on major projects with immaculate, innovative equipment, there are a host of other benefits too. A strong philosophy of nurturing and developing both existing and new staff means that clear progression paths are in place, not to mention attractive financial packages. No where is this more apparent than right at the top. Phil Hayden, began his career at Mick George Ltd some 24 years ago, having ‘done his time’ working through the ranks, as Quarry Operative, Plant Manager, and Contract Manager, he now holds the acclaimed position of Demolition Director, leading from the front.

If ever there was an example in our industry of career progression within a company, then I’m it. I’ve picked up some invaluable knowledge along the way but myself, like many of my colleagues, have been assisted on route by Mick George Ltd. The business certainly is not one to hold you back.

RAF Brampton Demolition Project, Cambridgeshire That’s all in the here and now, the exciting part still remains! Having chalked up £20 million for Contracted jobs in 2015, the business has no interest in resting on its laurels. With negotiations in progress on some major projects, the business anticipates smashing these figures in 2016 and beyond. Such success doesn’t come overnight or by chance. There’s an attitude and purpose that characterises what they do and the way they work. Building strong partnerships with clients, harnessed on the promise that they deliver to the highest possible standards is fundamental to the way the business functions. The recent appointment of C&D Consultancy, experienced specialists in the industry, is further evidence that Mick George Ltd are continuing to improve their Demolition service provision. Working in partnership to improve safety audits, staff training, and technical support for planning, traffic plans and methodology, all emphasises the organisations vision of targeting large scale Demolition projects in the future.

Phil Hayden, Demolition Director at Mick George Ltd Affiliated with many of the industries leading quality and safety governing bodies, alongside receiving recent accolades such as the FORS Gold accreditation, ‘National Tipper of the Year 2016’ and inclusion within The Sunday Times Profit Track 100 gives you a flavour of the progression path Mick George Ltd are on. However, their vision for the future would suggest this is only the beginning, in which case something very special lies ahead. Watch this space…

Throughout the business the emphasis on recruiting the ‘best’ talent available is evidently recognisable. A large proportion of Demolition employees at Mick George Ltd are longstanding

The Chinese Way

LiuGong excavators are popping up on demolition sites across the length and breadth of the land. Mark Anthony pops out for a Chinese.

I am old enough to remember a time when the first Japanese-built excavators were greeted with almost universal derision when they first made landfall here in the UK. They were dismissed – initially at least - as primitive and unreliable with little or no aftersales support. Those same criticisms were levelled at the first generation of Korean-built machines too, although these were also branded too flimsy for demolition applications. Thirty-odd years on, and Japanese and Korean excavators have dispelled such criticism and now form an integral part of

demolition equipment fleets. So anyone suggesting that Chinese-built machines from the likes of LiuGong are not “up to the job” probably needs to check their history. Alternatively, they could just check with the likes of Clarke Demolition Company, John F. Hunt, Keltbray, Metro Demolition, Squibb Group and a host of other high profile UK demolition contractors that have not just dipped a toe into Chinese equipment waters but which have bought machines in multiples, many of them subsequently returning with repeat orders. In addition, the company has sold machines to the likes HG HYDRAULIC GENERATOR POWERED BY HYDRAULICS

landfall in the UK in May 2013, appointing used equipment specialists Construction Plant and Machinery Sales (CPMS) as its sole UK importer. But as CPMS’s Grant McGregor asserts, this was an appointment that was hard-earned. “We were looking for an equipment manufacturer to represent alongside our used equipment operations and we actively sought out LiuGong. We had seen the machines and knew that they checked out well. They are powered by Cummins diesel engines that are familiar to UK equipment owners. Hydraulics come from Kawasaki, another familiar name. And, on the wheel loaders, axles and transmissions come from ZF, another leading and well-known brand. But we had to earn their trust,” he says. “Although LiuGong were keen to have a presence in the UK, we

had to go through a prolonged and arduous vetting process. All our systems were audited to ensure that they met with the very high expectation that LiuGong places upon its dealers.” Having successfully ticked all the relevant boxes, CPMS was appointed and granted access to a broad range of equipment and, perhaps as importantly, the growing global presence of LiuGong. “LiuGong has a vast research and development operation and is constantly striving to produce new and improved machines to meet the changing needs of customers across the world,” he continues. “We set in place a parts stock valued at around £0.5 million and we can call upon a larger inventory of almost six million Euros at LiuGong’s facility in the Netherlands.

17

STUFF To date, we have never had to request a part from China.”

Robust by Design But if the parts operation is European, the machines themselves are pure Chinese. “Everything is done at the factory, including rotation and shear circuits,” McGregor insists. “Demolition excavators specified here arrive complete. Side skirts, additional guarding, belly plates and even the boxing rings and bucket ram guards are all added at the factory. When a customer gets a LiuGong excavator, it is pure thoroughbred and has not had bits bolted on by a third-party supplier.”

Anyone concerned with emissions can rest assured as well. Most of the company’s excavator offering already meets Stage 4 regulations, and compliance will extend across the entire LiuGong portfolio by 2017.

Further Afield Anyone scanning through the – undoubtedly impressive – list of names of demolition contractors now using LiuGong equipment cannot fail to notice that each speaks with a Cockney or South of England accent. Although this is partly queered by the fact that London and the South East is home to the highest concentration of major demolition companies in the UK, it also reflects CPMS’ own Southern roots. The company is based in Portsmouth and has a part operation – together with three fitters – in West London to service customers in the nation’s capital. But all that is set to change. At the time of writing, the company was

According to McGregor, it is not just the optional extras that have found favour with UK demolition companies. “In many ways, the Chinese use their machines the same as we do here. They are worked hard and they have to be robust,” he explains. “We achieved our initial sales because there was a price advantage. But there is a real quality in the LiuGong machines. They utilise the finest components and they are well put together.”

18

putting the finishing touches to a new depot in Manchester which has been opened to target further sales in the Midlands and North of England. At the same time, the company is working with Kocurek Excavators to develop its first high reach machine. Destined to join the Keltbray fleet, that machine is based upon a 25 tonne LiuGong 925E base with the addition of a 16 metre, three-piece boom, making it ideal for small and awkward inner city works. There is no question that LiuGong has come a long way in just three short years and,

according to McGregor, there is more to come. “2017 will see the addition of some more new machines. And the opening of our new Manchester depot will allow us to extend our sales operation still further,” he concludes. “We are targeting a 10 percent market share and we believe we have the machines and the support infrastructure to make that a possibility.” Construction Plant and Machinery Sales has already proved that it can consistently win repeat orders. It seems that, in stereotypical Chinese fashion, if you have one now, you’ll want another one a short time afterwards.

The Acceptable Porsche

been two occasions when I have sunk below even my own low standards, causing my wife’s face to crease into a despairing mask of disdain, pity and open hostility. The first time was when I came home from work and proudly displayed my newly-pierced belly button (I was in my late 30s at the time; plenty old enough to know better). The second was when I announced the impulse purchase of a (very) used Porsche 944. Not knowing that my old boss had owned one back in the depths of 1980s yuppiedom and that I had hankered after one ever since, my wife merely sensed the onset of yet another mid-life crisis that would likely culminate in me taking a mistress even younger than my car. Despite her reservations and continued protestations, for the first six months of

Demolition magazine editor Mark Anthony took the latest incarnation of the Porsche Cayenne GTS for a spin and discovered a performance car that will not make you a laughing stock, regardless of your age. I have been married for more than 26 years and so, like most married men, I am well aware that I have been a source of almost constant disappointment to my longsuffering spouse for more than a quarter of a century. But during that time, there have

21

STUFF ownership, that Porsche 944 was my pride and joy. It was old, its paintwork dulled by the passage of time. But it still went like stink while looking utterly unassuming. And, of course, it had pop-up headlights.

cars. And besides, if it’s off-road capability you’re seeking, what the Hell is wrong with a Land Rover…or a Mitsubishi Shogun? Boy, was I in for a shock. After spending the morning working my way through circuit drives of wheeled rocket ships including the 718 Boxster, 911 GT3 and the seriously impressive Panamera hybrid, I was led towards a woodpecker green Cayenne, handed the keys, and pointed towards the exit to the Silverstone complex. They were actually turning me loose in this thing!

The second six months of ownership were a markedly different matter. I became increasingly aware that the car smelled quite badly of mildew and other people’s bottom; that it was cramped and hot; that it was deeply uncomfortable to drive and drank petrol like a man dying of thirst. Worst of all, it developed a fault with the pop-up headlights, one of them regularly refusing to open making the car look like Thom Yorke from Radiohead. It was sold shortly thereafter and I reluctantly swore that my Porsche hankering was now satiated.

Having spent the morning squeezing my buttocks into bucket seats too small and too intrusive for a man of my advanced years, the first thing to say about the Cayenne is that it is seriously comfortable. I would happily drive this thing all day every day. I would take it to the shops, take it on site, and drive it to the South of France and I would relish every second of each journey. In fact, fit it with a decent widescreen television and the interior would make for a fine living room.

But when I was invited to Silverstone for a day-long Porsche Experience, complete with a test drive of the 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS 4X4, I was off up the M40 like a rat up a pipe.

Woodpecker Green Now, in truth, the Cayenne has always been a bit of a problem for me. As far as I am concerned, the Porsche name was and forever shall be synonymous with low-profile, sleek supercars, not lumbering 4X4 mummy

accelerator to the floor. 440 horses from the V6 twin-turbo engine kicked me square between the shoulder blades as the Cayenne blasted towards the rapidly approaching horizon, accelerating from 0-60 in just over five seconds (or roughly the same time it takes you to realise that your internal organs have now gathered around your spinal column).

My driving confidence newly buoyed by a morning blatting around test circuits and low-friction skid pans, my first sighting of open road caused me to stamp the

In the time it takes my normal car to require a shift to second gear, the Cayenne had passed the 100 miles per hour mark and was

23

STUFF showing no signs of stopping. Furthermore, I was becoming aware that the open road suddenly feels a lot less open at warp speed. It seems a strange thing to dwell upon but it was at this point that I discovered the ace up Porsche’s design sleeve. According to a briefing earlier that day, each Porsche car possesses the ability to stop from 0-62 mph in half the time it takes each model to accelerate from 0-60. On the Porsche 911 Turbo, which can accelerate from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, that braking can bring the car

to a dead halt from 62 mph in less than 1.5 seconds. In the comparatively sedate Cayenne, that deceleration is in the region of 2.5 seconds, a decrease in speed which takes those organs previously pinned to the rear of your chest cavity and attempts to force them out through the front of your rib cage like a hardboiled egg through an egg slicer. This ability to bring what is ostensibly a supercar in a fat suit to such a controlled

and swift halt is deeply reassuring until you realise that the cars travelling behind you are not similarly blessed in the braking department. But that is hardly Porsche’s fault.

In Safe Hands So far, so very Porsche. Similarly, the 8-speed Tiptronic S gearbox – available with flappy-paddle controls – and sports exhaust speaks to a track day car. But the Cayenne is more than a track day car. In fact, it is more than “just” a Porsche. High

ground clearance and standard 20 inch alloy wheels make this car perfectly capable of traversing a construction or demolition site. There is a real boot that is big enough to accommodate a set of golf clubs, full PPE and still have room for a decent-sized dog to sit comfortably. Then, of course, is the remarkable economy of an engine that can deliver a top speed of 163 mph but which, in Extra Urban mode, politely sips at fuel at a rate of 34.5 miles/gallon. Overall, I was left with two key impressions

Skanska Gets Knightsbridge Nod Skanska has been employed by Cheval Property Holdings Ltd as principal contractor for the demolition of the building behind 55-91 Knightsbridge.

The contract, which will run until October 2017, sees the removal of the building down to basement level, in anticipation of redevelopment. The team will also clean and retain the early 20th century, grade twolisted façade of the site’s mansion block, part of the conservation area near Hyde Park. Skanska believes it is the longest façade project of its type in London. Key to the contract award was Skanska’s experience in traffic management and logistics, as well as façade retention systems and demolition within tight constraints on site. In the heart of Knightsbridge, the site is bound by two five-star hotels, residential properties, retail outlets and offices. “Our team has delivered many similar

28

schemes and our knowledge and experience have already exceeded the customer’s expectations,” says Skanska managing director Paul Heather. “This latest project start confirms that the commercial development market in London remains active, and Skanska is playing a significant part in the sector. We have a strong pipeline of work and look forward to working with developers across the city to create their developments.” Skanska secured the contract through a competitive tender process, following a successful pre-construction service agreement, where the team undertook asbestos removal, investigative and enabling works.

Blast-Proof is Nothing A concrete cutting expert in the North East has demolished an explosionproof building at a historic Newcastle University site.

John Emberson, the North East branch manager of nationally-acclaimed diamond drilling and concrete sawing company D-Drill, was called in to demolish a structure on the side of the university’s iconic Armstrong Building.

It is the university’s oldest building which was constructed in three stages and dates back to 1888, and the company was required to work carefully to avoid damaging the original structure. Not only were the skilled D-Drill operatives up against the blastproof building with thick concrete walls and a 1.2 metre thick roof, a narrow courtyard meant they had limited access to the site. “I was delighted to receive the call – it’s not every day you are asked to demolish a blast-proof building. It was built onto the outside wall of the main Armstrong Building, situated in a small courtyard. This was probably built for a horse and cart to go through, which meant we had very limited access,” Emberson says. “The biggest part of the job was to remove the structure without damaging part of the original building which required our skills and experience. “I decided that we would need to start by drilling and hydraulic bursting the roof, then as the roof was removed we drilled and burst the walls as we progressed.”

After cracking the concrete walls, the company used a BROKK 90 to break the concrete down to floor level before it was safely removed. “Of course, we always take great care to work in a very safe and controlled way but as the Armstrong Building is such an iconic building steeped in history, this was of paramount importance,” Emberson asserts. “We were very pleased with how smoothly the demolition went. We completed the job very safely in a quick time and this has been recognised by the university and the main contractor who have given us a lot more work as a result of this. We now look forward to working with the main contractor and Newcastle University on future projects.”

on site EMC has developed a strong reputation in the Queensland bulk excavation basement market over many years. The company is experiencing strong demand for its services from a large number of high rise developers in the Brisbane area. To meet this growing demand for EMC’s services, BA Equipment Group’s State Manager Rob Guerin and Atlas Copco Australia’s Regional Sales Manager Alex Bennett worked with EMC in agreeing to key performance indicators for a trial of the 10 tonne Atlas Copco HB 10000 breaker to assess its power, production, noise levels and vibration levels. The breaker was delivered and commissioned in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

The vibration levels were measured using calibrated vibration monitoring equipment. Two types of monitors were used to ensure there were no incorrect or inconsistent readings. The vibration levels were found to be within the required parameters. Jim advised that this was critical as a heritage listed building is on the boundary of this excavation site. Productivity was also tested. EMC marked out a 10 cubic metre section of Brisbane’s hardest rock (Brisbane Tuff) and went at flat out with their 7 tons breaker, which completed the works in 10 minutes. The test was then repeated with the Atlas Copco HB10000 10 tons breaker. It completed the works in 5 minutes. “If you work that out over an hour, day, week, month or a year

in June 2016 and put to work for the trial. It was operated by EMC’s Managing Director Jim Dupuis. “The HB 10000 is breaking out more than double compared to our existing seven ton breaker HB 7000,” EMC’s Managing Director Jim Dupuis said. He also said how surprised he was with the low noise levels and how comfortable it was to operate for such a large and powerful breaker.

Record Breaker

Brown and Mason claims explosive demolition record in spectacular and explosive style. Mark Anthony reports.

40

Brown and Mason has cemented its reputation as the power station’s worst enemy with the spectacular and textbook explosive demolition of the chimney at Grain A Power Station on the Hoo Peninsula that has been a major fixture of the Medway skyline for almost 40 years.

the 244 metre tall structure took just nine seconds to fall. Some 40,000 tonnes of rubble crashed to the ground as live pictures of the demolition were beamed around the world. Originally opened in 1979, Grain A was able to produce enough electricity to power more than one million homes. But EU directives on carbon emissions due to climate change led to the demise of the oil-fired plant, and it closed in December 2012. Energy will still be produced from the site from a new gasfired station.

The Grain power station chimney, which was taller than Canary Wharf and the size of 55 double-decker buses stacked on top of each other, is the highest concrete structure ever to be demolished in the UK using explosives. Two and a half times the height of Big Ben and only 60 metres shorter than The Shard,

41

on site The demolition project began in April 2014 and so far there have been five explosive demolition events to bring down the main infrastructure of the plant. Since the project began, more than 84,000 tonnes of material has been removed from the site to be recycled, and work is due to continue until the end of the year.

The existing infrastructure at Grain A has been used to build a 1,275 MW gasfired power station on the same site. The development of Grain B means the site can continue to provide electricity to homes and local businesses.

DIDCOT

Demolition editor Mark Anthony pays a personal tribute to the four men killed at Didcot A Power Station and calls for an industry-wide review of safety procedures in their honour.

Although our professional paths likely crossed, I never had the pleasure or privilege of knowing Mick Collings, Ken Cresswell, Chris Huxtable and John Shaw personally. But having followed every overlong twist and protracted turn of their collective story for almost seven months now, I know that their names will be etched upon my psyche for as long as I am associated with the demolition industry. I will remember those names for as long as I live. And it is important that the wider demolition world remembers those names too. Not just in a minutes’ silence on the anniversary of their tragic demise although 23 February would make a wholly fitting day upon which to remember all those killed and injured in this industry of ours – but in a far more ever-present and meaningful manner.

the hard hats of every new recruit joining this industry as a constant and poignant reminder of this industry’s darker side. That said, even though it was how these men earned their living, fed their families and to which they paid the ultimate sacrifice, demolition does not define them. First and foremost, they were someone’s son. They were – variously - husbands, boyfriends, fathers and uncles. Demolition is just what they did to facilitate everything else in their lives; it was not who they were. But – and let’s not make any bones about this – it was demolition that ripped these men from the arms of their individual families. And it is demolition that must learn the greatest lessons from this tragic, brutal and unforgiveable disaster. The industry must take a long hard look at itself and figure out how - in an age of technological advancement and spiralling training costs – four decent men were allowed to perish in this manner. It should look again at the methods it employs and be willing to admit that “we have always done it that way” is no proof of the efficacy or safety of a methodology. And most of all, those within positions of power and influence within the industry must ask themselves just how well they would sleep if they were sending their sons and daughters to work on sites still cursed with the ability to maim and kill.

So on 23 February 2017 (and every year thereafter), we should each raise a glass to Mick Collings, Ken Cresswell, Chris Huxtable and John Shaw. We should light a candle for each of them. We should stop work for a moment and reflect upon their cruel passing. And, if that’s your thing, we should say a prayer for the families they each left behind.

four men should mark a step change in the demolition sector’s attitude to safety. The fact that demolition killed these four men is terrible, tragic, awful and unpardonable. The thought that their loss might not be used as a catalyst to make this industry safer is just too unthinkable for words.

But we should each do more. It is important – VITAL – that the deaths of these

Rubble Master’s Recycling Rescue Recycling demolition waste within a small contained inner city environment can be a tricky business. Co-ordinating waste collection vehicles and new materials being delivered site has to be carefully evaluated logistically, in terms of

environmental impact, cost to the contractor and the health and safety implications for site contractors and the general public at large moving around outside of a demolition site. One recent demolition project undertaken by PE Global Consulting in the city centre of Manchester demonstrated perfectly that not all waste requires removal from site. Directors reported the project had achieved

62

an overall recycling rate of 95 percent with 90 percent recycled and reused material remaining on site for future construction purposes. These targets were achieved in large with the use of a Rubble Master RM70Go tracked mobile crusher, supplied on rental by Warrington based attachment and crusher specialists ECY Haulmark. The site, situated along the busy A665 Great Ancoates street in central Manchester occupies approximately 1,600 m2, half of which being used as a pay and display car parking area with the

other half occupied by a disused two storey Victorian brick building, facing demolition ahead of a new development of modern residential and commercial buildings on the site. PE Global Consulting faced the challenge of demolishing the existing two-storey building, removing the waste material and preparing the ground for handover to the client. Due to the space constraints and busy main road position, the company also faced the challenge of minimising disruption from heavy goods vehicles continually entering and exiting the site.

With two excavators working simultaneously on site, the Rubble Master RM70Go was brought in once the building had been brought to ground level and the cellars fully excavated along with 20 tonnes of scrap metals and 12 loads of inert waste removed from site. The RM70Go crushed the remaining brick and concrete onsite, over a period of two days, producing approx. 600 tonnes of 50 mm down crushed aggregate per day. The demolition contractor stressed the

product the Rubble Master RM70Go had produced had achieved a CBR pressure test for piling, once the crushed brick waste had been laid in 150 mm sections with 3 to 4 passes on each roll of the material. The overall cost savings of using the Rubble Master RM70Go onsite over two days had been calculated by the contractor at ÂŁ13,840.00 once the number of waste collection vehicles and fresh material delivery vehicles had been taken into consideration and the cost of the crusher rental taken off.

demolition sites is to protect their workers and people living and working adjacent to the site. It is important that comprehensive dust control systems are established as soon as work commences. Being robust and powerful, this spray cannon is extremely efficient for suppressing dust across mid-sized sites. It has its own generator and this particular unit was selected because it suited ADM Regeneration’s specific requirements and budget.

The SC45 was perfect for ADM Regenerations’ environmental and health and safety needs. The company’s ultimate requirement when working on dust-heavy

KIT TALK Mounted onto a skid frame for ease of positioning, the cannon is capable of spraying 3500 litres/hour up to distances of 45 metres. It has a 7.5 kW fan and 34 nozzle misting system which creates an ultra-fine fog of water particles as small as 10 micrometres. This fog binds with airborne dust making it fall quickly and safely to the ground. It is also highly effective for dealing with odour emissions.

The 185 x 140 x 210cm, 500g cannon tilts between 15° - 60° and oscillates up to 220° so the spray can be directed to exactly where it is needed. It also has 4 lifting points and is suitable for use with forklifts.

“Garic’s range of spray cannons is exceptional, there’s something for virtually every type of project. Together we established that this mid-size cannon would be the most practical for us. This is a busy, confined site and it’s absolutely vital that our environmental precautions are top notch. We’ve got up to 45 operatives demolishing the structures and crushing the 25,000 m3 of arisings, as well as people living nearby and a school,” says ADM Regeneration’s demolition director Paul Cryer. “We’re impressed, so much so we’re already looking at buying a couple more.” Garic reports that it meticulously researched the market to find that best dust and odour suppression products to complement its range of welfare and site set up equipment. It is now the sole UK and Ireland distributor for MB Dust Control’s spray cannons which are manufactured in the Netherlands. The range includes 15 models starting with compact handheld units and progressing in size and power to heavy duty cannons capable of spraying across distances of up to 100 metres. There are also wall mounted spray systems suitable for internal use.

mining, waste and commercial industries, with a customer base ranging from global conglomerates to original equipment manufacturers. The company is hoping that its new product will create new opportunities in the demolition, recycling and waste management sector.

“We are seeing more and more instances of adults and young children being injured or killed by large vehicles operating on our roads,” explains managing director Peter Spillard. “And more times than not this is down to blind spots where drivers can’t see or have limited vision of what is around them. The launch of the Optronics Wide Eye Camera System is one step closer to removing a lot of the dangers and will definitely help the sector reduce accidents.”

“We have been talking to firms that operate in this sector and there is a renewed focus on investing in new solutions that will improve visibility and prevent any future accidents taking place,” Spillard concludes. “Optronics Wide Eye is the latest technology we are bringing to market and we are very excited about the positive changes it will deliver.”
