A Brief Introduction to Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) by Olivia Santa Maria

What is soft tissue?

The term “soft tissue” refers to the fascia (connective tissue): muscles, tendons, and ligaments that make up the body. Injuries to these areas are a common cause of pain and dysfunction that causes patients to seek the assistance of a physical or occupational therapist. There are a variety of techniques used to treat these conditions, including exercise modalities and manual therapies. Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is one of the manual techniques a physical or occupational therapist can use to treat these injuries.

What is IASTM, and why is it used?

When soft tissue injuries occur, the natural processes of the body lay down new cells to heal the injury. These cells are often laid down in a disorganized pattern and they can bind to the underlying tissues, ultimately restricting the mobility of these structures. IASTM involves the use of tools to mobilize the soft tissue structures of the body. These tools come in many shapes and sizes, and are made of a variety of materials, such as stainless steel, plastic, jade, and ceramic. While the tools may differ in shape and material, they share the common purpose of assisting the clinician with mobilizing the injured soft tissue in order to reduce adhesions (scar tissue), increase blood flow to the injured area, and encourage healing of the damaged tissue.

What injuries are most commonly treated with IASTM?

The different shapes and edges of the tools allow the clinician to use them around all of the different contours of the body, which makes them useful for most conditions seen in the clinic. These tools can be used to break down scar tissue after surgery, decrease pain caused by sprains and strains to ligaments and muscles, reduce swelling/edema, and alleviate nerve restrictions. Common conditions that warrant use of IASTM treatment are joint replacements, rotator cuff tears and surgical repairs, plantar fasciitis, muscle strains, and tendonitis.

not be the primary treatment, but rather one technique your therapist uses to assist in your recovery. The technique itself involves the clinician using the tool in a scraping motion along the surface of the skin. In order to “restart” the healing process, your therapist is causing a micro-trauma to the injured area to encourage the body to heal itself. Therefore, temporary redness, heat sensation, and sometimes bruising are normal immediately following treatment, and there may be some soreness or discomfort. It is important to not be alarmed by these symptoms, and recognize that these are temporary symptoms being closely monitored by your therapist. After several treatments, there should be a noticeable change in mobility and function. IASTM, combined with your exercise program, can help you return to your normal daily activities and hobbies.

New Location: Manahawkin!

What should I expect?

Olivia graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health and a Minor in Gerontology from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in 2012. She continued her education at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ in Newark, where she received her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2015. While in graduate school, Olivia and her fellow colleagues conducted a study entitled “For individuals with lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries, do off-the- shelf video games, compared to standard of care, improve balance, function, and patient satisfaction?” The abstract was accepted and Olivia presented the poster at the National Combined Section Meeting in 2015. Since graduating in 2015, Olivia’s primary professional focus has been in the orthopedic outpatient setting, although she has also worked and completed clinical experiences in both acute care and acute rehabilitation. Olivia is a certified LSVT Big clinician, and she has been trained in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Olivia is interested in non-operative and operative orthopedic conditions, sports rehabilitation, balance and gait dysfunction, and manual therapy. Her future professional plans include becoming a Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. Olivia is the manager at the new Manahawkin facility.

HPV In Oropharyngeal Cancer The human papilloma virus or HPV is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection in the United States. There are many strains of the HPV virus and several have been shown to cause cancer. It has been estimated that approximately 12,000 individuals are infected with HPV every day. In the majority of individuals, the immune system can clear the virus, but some people can become chronically infected. HPV is known to cause cancer of the cervix in women and squamous cell cancer of oropharynx including the tonsils and the base of the tongue in both men and women. Risk factors include sexual activity at an early age, a greater number of sexual partners, and weakened immune systems. In the past, oropharyngeal cancer was usually associated with a history of smoking or drinking alcohol. Today the number of patients with oropharyngeal-related HPV cancer is increasing and it is now the most common cause. In patients infected with HPV, oropharyngeal cancer can develop in people in

Stephen Kupferberg, MD, FACS

their 30s to 50s even in the absence of a smoking or alcohol history. It may present as an ulcer, growth or pain in the mouth/throat or a mass in the neck. Patients should undergo a complete head and neck examination by an Otolaryngologist, which may include using a fiber-optic camera to evaluate the tonsils and back of the tongue. In the event of suspicious findings, a biopsy or fine needle aspiration will be done to confirm the pathology and assess the presence of HPV. Once diagnosed, the treatment may include resection of the tumor, often using robotic technology, and removing the lymph nodes from the neck. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy may also be utilized as a primary treatment modality or in addition to surgery. HPV-related cancer can be prevented. Young men and women can be vaccinated against HPV. It is recommend that this be performed beginning at age 11-12 before they become sexually active. The vaccination can include HPV type 6, 11, 16 and 18. HPV 18 type is the most common etiology for oropharyngeal cancer. I would encourage parents to have their children vaccinated against HPV and potentially save them from these types of cancers.

Dr. Stephen Kupferberg is a board certified Otolaryngologist and has been in practice since 1997. He is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. and completed his internship and residency at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Ga. He is a Cancer Liason Physician for Community Medical Center for the commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, Vice President of the Monmouth/Ocean County Medical Society, and Chairman of the Otolaryngology Department of Community Medical Center. Dr. Kupferberg practiced in Maryland for four years before moving to Toms River where he resides with his wife and two sons. He specializes in nasal and sinus surgery and head and neck surgery and adult and pediatric ear, nose and throat disorders. His leisure time is spent outdoors with his family, cycling, camping, hiking and golfing.

Groundbreaking New Technolog Groundbreaking New Technology for Laser Tattoo Removal Shore Vascular & Vein Center / Aesthetic Laser Center announces enlighten™, the newest, most complete solution available anywhere for laser tattoo removal. enlighten™ is the most advanced

laser system available for safe and effective tattoo removal. It is the world’s first laser system to combine both picosecond and nanosecond technology with dual wavelength lasers. This allows individualized treatment of all colors of ink and skin types for the fastest, most complete laser tattoo removal ever available.

The “Pico” Difference

Lasers remove tattoos by delivering high energy over a very short period of time to break up ink. Inks of different types, colors and depth can provide significant challenges to remove. It has been shown that shorter duration pulses are more effective in completely removing tattoos than longer duration pulses. Our new enlighten™ laser can deliver energy at picosecond intervals. A picosecond is one trillionth of a second. This is one thousand times shorter than prior lasers for tattoo removal. Picosecond, sometimes referred to as “pico,” lasers have been shown to remove tattoos more completely and with fewer treatments, than with lasers used in the past.

Flexibility

Picosecond lasers are the newest, most advanced tattoo removal technology available. Our enlighten™ laser combines this “pico” technology with the flexibility of both 1064nm and 532nm dual wavelength lasers. Never before has this combination of power and versatility been available. This now allows for the treatment of all color tattoos and skin types, even the traditionally very difficult ones, with a single device. This provides effective results in approximately half the number of treatments of prior lasers.

Number of Treatments Required and Results

People often ask how long it will take to remove their tattoo, and will it be able to be removed completely. Laser tattoo removal typically takes multiple treatments. That is because tattoo ink is deposited deep into the skin and multiple treatments are needed to reach all of the ink and break it up completely. In addition, tattoos of various sizes, colors and ages may respond differently to treatment. Some colors are more difficult to clear completely than others. Therefore, it is impossible to know in the very beginning how many treatments will ultimately be needed or how completely it will be removed. However, our new enlighten™ picosecond laser has been shown to be faster and more effective than the prior lasers used for tattoo removal. In fact, many people can expect to obtain excellent results in half the number of treatments, or less, than with prior lasers. Our doctor can give you a good idea of the number of treatments that will be needed after your tattoo is examined.

Partial Tattoo Removal

Due to change in circumstances, relationships and other factors, some people desire to have their tattoos changed. We can remove parts of tattoos, while leaving other parts intact, to allow for tattoo changes.

Cost

Cost will vary depending on a number of factors including the size of the tattoo and the number of treatments needed. Keep in mind that with enlighten™, you should

very interested in science so it was a natural progression for him to pursue a career in medicine. His specialty is the treatment of disorders of the circulatory system – also known as vascular surgery. He grew up in a “surgical” family and his dad was his partner for 17 years until he retired. He adds, “When I was a child my Dad would bring me to the hospital to make rounds with him on weekends. I really looked up to him and what he did for a living.” It was his father’s dedication and satisfaction with his own career that had a lasting impression on the younger Gosin. Dr. Gosin: My specialty involves treating vein problems, such as varicose veins and spider veins. I also treat diseases of the arteries such as aneurysms, blockage in the arteries to the brain, called carotid artery stenosis and peripheral artery disease (PAD). As a surgeon, I am able to perform surgery when necessary. However, in many cases I am able to treat these vascular problems using modern, minimally invasive nonsurgical methods.

CW: What is the most rewarding part about your profession? Dr. Gosin:

better and healthier. In some cases, people experience dramatic improvements in their quality of life. It is a wonderful feeling to know that I was able to provide that.

CW: What is the most challenging?

Dr. Gosin: Every case can provide its own unique challenge. It is important to remember that each patient I treat is an individual. Certain elements of his or her care may be more challenging than a similar condition in another person. It is that variation that makes my job so interesting.

CW: Are varicose veins a genetic problem? Can they be prevented?

Dr. Gosin: Genetics are one of the most important risk factors in the development of varicose veins. Individuals with a family history are more likely to develop the condition themselves, than individuals who do not have that family history. However, genetics are just one of a number of recognized risk factors. Other risk factors include prolonged standing, pregnancy, increasing age and being overweight. It is also interesting to note that some people will develop varicose veins without any of those risk factors. Although there is no way to absolutely prevent the development of varicose veins, certain precautions, like wearing compression stockings, may help to keep the symptoms at bay.

Dr. Gosin grew up on the Jersey Shore, and after graduation from the Medical College, he completed his training and was delighted to come back and begin his practice. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue normally located in the uterus is abnormally found elsewhere in the abdomen. It affects women primarily from the late teenage years to the time of menopause. Classically, endometriosis is responsible for much of the chronic pelvic pain symptoms in women of reproductive age, and a common cause of infertility. Although the exact cause is unknown, evidence supports a genetic predisposition to developing endometriosis.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Women with endometriosis often experience painful periods and pelvic pain varying from a mild annoyance to severe debilitating pain. It is estimated that endometriosis may be present in up to a third of reproductive age women with pelvic pain, and up to forty percent of women presenting with infertility.

HOW IS ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSED?

A detailed medical history, physical exam, and pelvic ultrasound are common components in the workup of a patient with suspected endometriosis. Medical history may be consistent with painful menstrual periods, including pain with intercourse and pain when having a bowel movement or voiding. Ovarian cysts can be found on ultrasound that may or may not be symptomatic. A definitive diagnosis is based on surgical exploration of the abdomen, with visual evidence of endometriosis.

WHAT CAUSES ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Although the exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, this benign disease is thought to arise from a combination of menstrual fluid that backflows from the uterus into the fallopian tubes and enters the abdomen. Another likely factor is cellular changes that create endometriosis implants in the abdomen, or that an altered immune system response allows these endometriosis cells to successfully survive and grow outside of the uterine cavity.

HOW DOES ENDOMETRIOSIS AFFECT MY CHANCES OF FERTILITY? Women with endometriosis have a strong association with infertility. It is estimated that between 20 and 40 percent of infertile women have endometriosis, and that the extent of infertility is directly associated with the severity of disease.

WHAT ARE MY TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Treatment of endometriosis depends on the clinical symptoms, which include pelvic pain and/or infertility. Medical treatment includes the use of anti-inflammatory medications or oral contraceptives in those women with mild symptoms not desiring pregnancy. Medications that decrease the production of estrogen in the body are also being utilized to treat this disease. Although medical therapies address the symptoms, they do not provide a measurable benefit regarding fertility. Therefore, on a case-by-case basis, surgical treatment may be beneficial in restoring ovarian and fallopian tube anatomy, and to remove endometriosis implants. Fertility treatments may often be required to achieve pregnancy. Endometriosis can affect many facets of a woman’s health. It is important that patients be educated about the implications of this condition, and that proper evaluation and care is implemented by their provider. At the Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey, we are available to answer your fertility questions, perform a complete fertility evaluation, and present you with individualized options for conception, all in a comfortable and caring setting. Our patients are made to feel like guests in our home. We are a full-service fertility center experienced in all the latest technologies and look forward to helping you achieve success.

What Is Immunotherapy? Dr. Apurv Agrawal

If you watch the news and commercials on television, or surf the internet, you can’t help but hear about the new “rage” in cancer treatment: immunotherapy. The immune system is the body’s defense system against “foreign” invaders like infections, abnormal cells, and disease. The body typically fails in defending against cancer cells. That happens because cancer cells are often the body’s own cells which have mutated. Also, cancer cells have the ability to escape or overpower the immune system. Immunotherapy helps the immune system to identify cancer cells as abnormal cells. By doing so, the immune system is then able to try to fight and destroy the cancer cells as it would do in the case of an infection. Immunotherapy is not appropriate for all cancer patients or all types of cancer. In some cases immunotherapy is added with traditional chemotherapy to treat cancer. In certain cancers testing is performed on the cancer/tumor itself to see if the cancer would respond to immunotherapy. The test that is typically performed is called PD-L1. PD-L1 is a biomarker often seen on cancer cells and may predict if immunotherapy would be effective.

There are a number of immunotherapy products that are currently available. Their trade names include: Yervoy, Opdivo, Keytruda, Tecentriq, and Imfinzi.

Six Important Ways To Plan To Protect Kids With Special Needs By Christine L. Matus, Esq.

Raising a child with special needs can be a rich experience. It’s also a costly one that comes with unique challenges for your financial future and estate plans. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation, but here are some things to consider: 1. Your future security: Protect your children

by securing your own financial future. Start saving for retirement as early as possible to take advantage of compound interest.

5. 529 ABLE (529A): Like a 529 education

2. Life insurance: Consider investing in enough

life insurance to care for your child’s future financial needs. Government benefits can cover basic costs, but extra funds can fund additional expenses, such as hiring an additional caregiver after you’re gone. Talk to an advisor about beneficiary designations and consider a special needs trust. Consider disability insurance, too, to protect your family financially if you are living but no longer able to work.

3. Special needs trust: Assets held in a child’s name are held against them and could disqualify them from government benefits. One way around that is to set up a special needs trust. The intent is that a special needs trust can supplement a disabled person’s income in order to pay for extra wants and needs not covered by government benefits. 4. Educate your family: If you think your

parents or another family member might leave a legacy to your child, make sure they understand

the implications of a cash gift and the benefits of a special needs trust. plan, a 529A is a tax-advantaged way to save for your child’s special needs education and certain disability expenses. Generally speaking, parents should consider maxing out their own retirement accounts before funding supplemental savings tools like these. Be aware that once the account exceeds $100,000, your child will no longer be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

6. Adult guardianship: If your child will be

unable to make medical and financial decisions after he or she turns 18, talk to a lawyer about a power of attorney and health care proxy or becoming your adult child’s legal guardian. Don’t assume you’ll automatically be able to make decisions for them just because they’re disabled. When you have children with special needs, financial planning takes special care. It can be an emotional, frustrating process. An estateplanning attorney like The Matus Law Group who focuses on special needs planning can help you be proactive and create a plan so that both you and your children are cared for and protected.

Fiduci-what?

All trust companies, including Garden State, are held to the “fiduciary standard,” but we don’t hold the monopoly on fiduciary services.

In May, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) removed the word “fiduciary” from the mandated language registered investment advisors (RIAs) use in their customer relationship summary, concluding the word is “legal jargon.” Based on survey feedback, they decided the required RIA disclosure language to be: “When we act as your investment advisor, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours. At the same time, the way we make money creates some conflicts with your interests. You should understand and ask us about these conflicts because they can affect the investment advice we provide you.” The first sentence of the new disclaimer refers to the first and foremost requirement if your advisor is a fiduciary, the duty of loyalty, or putting the client’s interests above their own. Trust Companies act not only as a fiduciary, but also as a trustee, which means that in order to fulfill our duty of loyalty to our clients, we have many other specific duties we are legally obligated to perform on behalf of our clients. Here are some of the more common duties a trustee owes its beneficiaries: • Duty to administer a trust by its terms. Every trust agreement should make plain the purposes of the trust, as they provide the critical benchmarks for evaluating the trustee’s actions. • Duty of skill and care. A high standard of performance is required, even if an amateur is named who has no prior experience as a trustee.

• Duty to give notices. Notices may concern legal rights of the trust beneficiaries, such as a power to make withdrawals, or they may cover such ministerial matters as designating a successor trustee or an agent to assist in trust administration. • Duty to account. A written accounting of the assets, liabilities, receipts and disbursements of the trust must be provided to the beneficiaries regularly. • Duty of impartiality. The trustee must not favor one beneficiary over another, unless the trust document directs that providing for a particular beneficiary is a principal purpose of the trust. • Duty to invest. Trust assets must not be left idle. In addition to making the trust investments, the trustee has a duty to diversify the investments and develop an asset allocation plan. This is a job for professional investors or corporate fiduciaries. • Duty of confidentiality. Normally, the terms of a trust, the identity of its beneficiaries and their respective interests, and the nature of the trust assets cannot be disclosed to anyone except the beneficiaries and those who need such information in order to be able to administer the trust. The word “fiduciary” may be legal jargon; however, we take pride as a trustee in our duty of loyalty to our clients and being legally bound by it. The new disclosure language switch doesn’t preclude RIAs from using the term “fiduciary,” which we believe many will continue using to differentiate themselves, as it is the highest legal standard that a financial service provider can be held to. How To Avoid Holiday Scamming What is the most wonderful time of the year for scammers? The holiday season. Before you know it, the holiday charity and fundraiser requests will start to arrive in the mail or on the phone. It is during this time of the year that scammers attempt to take advantage of the all-around goodwill that abounds during the holidays, making us more vulnerable to the schemes that are out there. Seniors are certainly no exception. It’s common for scammers to target seniors because they often have large nest eggs and exceptional credit scores. Additionally, memory issues and cognitive decline may make them more willing to give up valuable information. QUESTION: How do you avoid being scammed? ANSWER: This is a timely question given the fact the holiday season is upon us. Giving to charities and supporting fundraisers is a way of American life. However, we want to make sure our hard-earned dollars go to a good cause and not to a scammer’s pocket. • Avoid any request that refuses to provide detailed information about its identity, mission and how the donation will be used or requestor won’t provide proof that a contribution is tax deductible. • Before deciding to give, do some research to make sure your donation benefits the people, activity or organization you want to support. • Any time the caller uses high-pressure tactics to get you to donate immediately, hang up.

• Any time the caller asks for donations in cash, gift cards or to wire money, or offers to send a courier for overnight delivery service, this should raise a red flag. • If the request is for a fundraiser for a specific charity – call the charity to determine if they are aware of the request and have authorized it. • Make sure you know the detailed information, including the organization’s exact name, official address and telephone number. It is also as a health on-line, care proxy directive, is prudent to search the name of known the organization especially a durable power of attorneyorfor“scam” health care or an advance directive. with the word “complaint” to see if there have been An previous problems. can beto verified through such sites as individual appoints Charities a trusted person be his or her representative in the Charity Navigator or Give.org. event the creator of the document can no longer make medical decisions for • Avoid scams. Cake Shoppe & Tea Room

Committing to ‘Memory’ –

Designer Turns Her Baking Hobby Into a Full-Blown Career AnnMarie Cooney did not grow up dreaming of becoming a baker. Visions of sugar plums and intricately decorated cakes were not dancing through her head as a young girl. By trade, Cooney was a kitchen designer, but retired early to raise her daughters. “With three girls, my job was to raise good women,” Cooney says. It was a special request from her daughter that would eventually turn her into a AnnMarie Cooney highly sought-after cake designer and baker. “It all started because my daughter wanted a cake,” Cooney says with a smile. Cooney’s middle girl, was born with health issues that resulted in special needs. So when she wanted a circus cake for her fifth birthday, Cooney made her the best circus cake around. That was 14 years ago, and her girls quickly caught on to their mom’s special talent. At every birthday, they requested a special cake. “It became, ‘what can we do next’ and ‘how can we top that,’ Cooney says. Then she began making cakes for friends. Cooney’s husband had to build an additional kitchen at her house just to accommodate all of the special cake requests. When Cooney’s youngest daughter entered kindergarten six years ago, Cooney decided she wanted to go back to work. “But, I needed to figure out what I was going to do,” Cooney says. Sadly, Cooney’s grandmother, with whom she was very close, passed away during this time. “I was sitting at home, just very sad, and my cousin called me to meet her at the park with her kids,” Cooney says. However, in the midst of grief, she didn’t feel up to it. “My cousin sad, ‘come on grandma would want us to.’ So I went, Cooney says. On the way to the park, she saw the real estate sign. She checked it out and immediately knew that it would be the perfect location for her bakery, A Sweet Memory Cake Shoppe & Tea Room. “My grandmother left each of her grandchildren a small inheritance and it was just enough for me to open my business,” Cooney explains. Cooney spent about five years at that location before moving to another larger space six months ago just two miles down the road in Waretown. A beautiful picture of her grandmother has watched over her since the day she opened. It’s difficult to simply call Cooney’s creations “cakes.” Some designs are so intricate that they look like art. Cooney and her team created a three-dimensional depiction of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” that captured the essence of this masterpiece with sweet, swirly curves and lines of vividly hued icing. Then there’s the adorable panda birthday cake that could easily be mistaken for a cuddly toy. The list of unique, edible masterpieces goes on and on, That’s because they average a minimum of 30 specialty cake orders per week, mostly by working with different catering and special event venues in and around Long Beach Island. However, they also have a long list of loyal customers. “Some of our customers started with a gender reveal and now we’re doing their fifth birthday cake,” Cooney says. Customer Kathy Helm of Waretown got her grandson’s birthday cake from Cooney close to five years ago. “It was perfect, I brought a couple pictures of what I wanted and they just did their thing,” Helm says. And she has been coming here ever since. “I’m in sales, so I bring my clients treats from here all the time,” Helm says. She’s also brought her granddaughter to Sweet Memory’s princess tea parties. “Our clients really do become our friends,” adds Cooney. In addition to the special-order cakes, A Sweet Memory, has a selection of seasonal cakes, mini desserts, cookie sandwiches and 521 Route 9 • other baked goods readily

available daily. Other creative creations include their cake pies; cakes topped with pie filling and decorated to look exactly like a pie. “Our baking is very seasonal,” Cooney explains. Winter flavors includes a tasted snowball cupcake, which is a chocolate cake filled with marshmallow and chocolate fudge, frosted with coconut buttercream, rolled in toasted coconut, drizzled with chocolate and topped with marshmallows. Or their gingerbread scone with maple cream. Or the orange, cranberry Christmas scone with orange cream. “My grandmother used to always have her ‘lady friends’, as she called them, over for tea,” Cooney explains, adding that she wanted to honor her grandmother by adding a high tea to her bakery. “We squeezed one table in our previous location and began hosting afternoon teas.” They were all so well-received Cooney has expanded her operation to include a full-time tea room. Decorated with a lovely mix of china and flowers, the tea room serves tea, lunch and snacks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. They also offer a high tea, but reservations are required. “Our clients have really created the charm of this place,” says Cooney, who adds almost of her china, platters and place setting have been donated by her customers. High tea ($27.95) is served on tiered platters and begins with an individual pot of tea, chosen from their selection of more than 50 teas. Followed by seasonally inspired salad and homemade soup, four varieties or tea sandwiches, freshly baked scones served with their specialty creams, and completed with a selection of their miniature desserts. “Everything from our meats to spreads, our dressings and chutneys, our soups are all made fresh in-house,” Cooney says. Cooney also places an emphasis on healthy fare. “We source organic whenever possible and offer a large selection or vegetarian friendly dishes,” she says. With the extra space the tea room has added to A Sweet Memory Cake Shoppe and Tea Room, Cooney is able to host special events. “We’ve done cake-decorating classes and other ladies events,” Cooney says. They’ve also hosted princess teas, American Girl teas, unicorn teas and more. They even carry a line of tea geared towards little ones. “We even have a dress up section that ladies and little ladies love,” Cooney says. A little help from above has turned Cooney’s one-time hobby into a business that brings customers joys bite by bite. The business that Cooney started out of her home has grown into a full-time operation with a staff of eight. “We work hard and we work a lot, but we really do love each other,” Cooney says. She says they have become a great team and she couldn’t do all of this without them. Cooney’s brother-in-law, Paul Cooney, recently joined the team as chef and baker. There’s also Sarah Rod, the head decorator, and Cindi Reider, head fondant who works in fine detail. “Sarah and Cindi are so talented, they really are the best around, they’re artists,” Cooney says. Together, what they create can easily be considered art, but at the end of the day-or party or wedding or afternoon tea- and after the last bite, their masterpiece has been turned into a sweet memory.

Our tea room serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 4pm.

Economy dentures serve a basic purpose – filling empty space and allowing you to chew some foods. They can be a cost-effective choice, but they also can have problems. With no stimulation, the jaw bone deteriorates. Combine that with the lack of support to the lips and face, and you wind up with a sunken, aged look. PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS – WHEN YOU NEED A LAWYER When bad things happen to good people, a lawyer’s services are necessary to ensure that you get the most compensation for your injuries. Why do I need a personal injury attorney?

Experience and expertise. Personal injury attorneys often have: • Trial experience (whereas other types of attorneys may not); • Negotiation experience; • An in-depth understanding of medical diagnoses and processes associated with personal injuries; and • An in-depth understanding of negligence law and other torts.

Factors to consider

When you begin the process of choosing a personal injury attorney, you will want to understand what makes a good lawyer. One important factor is trial experience. While not all cases go to trial and most settle out of court, you will want to hire an attorney who is a certified trial attorney and is not intimidated by a trial.

Know the facts of your case and have as much documentation as possible.

Before meeting with an attorney for an initial consultation, write down and know as many facts of your case as possible. The attorney may want to see any or all of the following: • Police or incident report • Medical documents, including bills, diagnoses, and test results • Pictures of the location of the incident or accident, damage, injuries or anything from the scene • Written statements from witnesses • Your insurance policy (if applicable)

Feel comfortable with the attorney

You are going to be spending a good amount of time with your lawyer, so you want to make sure they make you feel comfortable, will be available to answer any questions you may have, and will have a positive outlook about your case.

TESTIMONIAL “I am a long-time client of Kevin Riordan. Among other things, he has represented my mother for a fall and me in a worker’s compensation case, with great results. Sometimes the process gets complicated, but I feel confident when he is battling on our side because I know he has a great reputation as a trial attorney.”— William H., Manahawkin

.

Dawn

Size Matters

Law offices range in size from sole practitioners to firms with hundreds of lawyers. While large firms may be more attractive, there are undeniable benefits to hiring a smaller firm.

Small Firm

Small firms can be an excellent choice and so you may want to consider retaining one if it makes sense, given the nature of your legal problem. Although no two firms are the same, potential benefits of hiring a small firm include: • A more direct working relationship with your lawyer.

Your case is not going to get lost in the shuffle.

• Lower fees and costs. It is not unusual for a small firm to charge less than a big firm might charge for doing the same type of work. • A more informal working relationship. You are likely to get to know everyone in your lawyer’s office if he or she is with a small firm. This can lead to a better working relationship, which may make you feel more comfortable.

For a free consultation, please contact Kevin Riordan, Esq., at 732-240-2250. Kevin B. Riordan, Esq. With over 20 years of trying cases in New Jersey, you can rest assured that if you hire Kevin Riordan he will not settle for less than the fair amount. A lawyer’s services are necessary to ensure you get the most compensation for your injuries. Kevin attended Kalamazzo College and received his law degree from New York Law School. He is a member of the Ocean and American Bar Associations. He is certified by the Supreme Court as a Civil Trial Attorney.

21 Health & Wellness Free Yourself From Negative Patterns Now, And Improve Your Health And Well-Being Just because you’ve been stuck in an unwanted pattern for a long time – doesn’t mean you’re doomed to be stuck forever. Negative patterns of acting or thinking can hurt you physically and emotionally, and can affect your overall sense of wellbeing. They can limit your life and keep you imprisoned in a variety of ways. But you are certainly capable of changing. People who seek help from hypnosis practitioners/ coaches often come in to release habits like: • Inappropriate eating • Smoking • Frequent worrying • Poor sleep quality • Being a couch potato • Always expecting negative outcomes • Being fearful or overreacting to certain situations… and on and on. You have probably been programming yourself – without realizing it – to continue with those negative behavior/thought patterns. Take a moment and consider one or two habits/patterns you want to change. What kind of messages do you give yourself related to these? Maybe you make statements like: • “I always regain whatever weight I lose.” • “I’ve smoked for so long, it’s probably impossible to stop now, so why bother?!” • “I’m a worrier – I’ve always been a worrier, and that won’t change.” • “I come from a family of insomniacs.” • “I panic when I get on a plane, so I’ll just have to drive everywhere.” • “I’d rather stay home than feel uncomfortable with people I don’t know.” • “I just don’t have the time to exercise.”

Hypnosis For Women ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

Weight Control Smoking Cessation Relaxation/Comfort Fear Release

You often pay a hefty price for staying stuck. Think about one of your negative habits, and consider some of the consequences you’ve already experienced. Now think about the consequences if you continue to stay stuck. How will your life be impacted one year from now, five years, ten years or more? Notice the details. Now imagine that you were guided to set yourself free from that unwanted pattern. How would your life be better? What would you be doing that you aren’t doing now? Imagine your life one year from now, five years, ten years or more. Notice the benefits in detail – and sense how good it feels to be free. With the right guidance, tools, and techniques, you are absolutely capable of changing. By accessing your subconscious mind, through the use of hypnosis, negative patterns are much easier to neutralize and positive patterns can be embedded. The approach is based on neuroscience – the study of how the mind works. It’s an efficient, holistic, and empowering modality that works wonderfully for people who are motivated to change, believe that with the right tools and techniques they are capable of changing, and understand they need to be a partner in the process.

How can I take charge of my risk of Hepatitis C?

The most important component to managing Hepatitis C is to know whether or not you’re infected. The first place to ask about this is with your primary care provider, who can easily order the needed lab testing. Once a positive test is found, the next step is to speak with a gastroenterologist and to set a course for a successful treatment. A simple blood test called a Hepatitis C antibody test can detect if you have been exposed to the virus. If this is positive, then further tests are needed to see if active virus is circulating in your blood. Once your infection is confirmed by blood testing, imaging of the liver with an ultrasound and additional blood testing to further understand the extent of the infection will be required.

Compassionate Nursing Care

A

t FountainView and Tallwoods Care Centers, our mission is to provide the epitome of quality care for our residents. When we think about our residents’ care, we don’t just limit it to our medical and rehabilitation care. Instead, we understand that when our residents are suffering from illness or disability, they deserve so much more than just treatment. Our medical and nursing staff is above par and our therapy is expertly provided in our state-ofthe-art facility. However, we take more pride in the fact that our staff is warm and caring, ensuring that our residents are always treated with the ultimate kindness and gentleness. Additionally, we provide a stimulating environment, maintain a full recreation schedule and make sure our residents are still connected to the cultural and social dynamics of the world around them. Our goal, no matter the length of one’s stay, is to treat, cultivate and inspire body, mind and spirit so that when a resident returns home, they’ve gained so much more than a rehabilitative or nursing care. Our goal is to minimize the length of our residents’ stay with us, but at the same time, we hope that every day they’re with us is one they’ll love.

Ask Daniel Straffi, Jr. Esq. Moving Forward: When Enough Becomes Enough

“N

ormalcy” is defined as being within certain limits that define the range of normal functioning. How we each come to define those limits over time is a whole other story. For many of the people I work with, a “normal” day starts at 8 am, when they are awakened by a cacophony of debt collectors ringing their house phone and/or cell phone, harassing them for money they simply do not have. A normal day may include a similar call made to their workplace, or in some cases a neighbor or relative. A normal day usually ends with a trip to the mailbox, where various forms of threats against one’s home, wages and belongings await. Of course, all of the aforementioned say nothing of the other daily stresses that we all know broaden our limits of normalcy by the day. There is a breaking point for everyone. The symptoms of approaching this breaking point can manifest in any number of emotional and physical ways, all of which I have heard and seen in my daily interactions with clients. The question is whether or not a person can identify these symptoms and be proactive in addressing them, so that the limits of normalcy can, once again, become more defined.

My answer to anyone seeking to redefine these limits is simple: it is never too late, and it is never too early to investigate one’s options. Bankruptcy is no longer a “four-letter” word (alas, math was not my finest subject in school). Rather, it stands for a fresh start - an opportunity to redefine the normalcy in your own life. Bankruptcy is not for everyone. However, understanding what it encompasses and whether or not it is an option for you takes nothing more than being proactive. It is the will to move forward that one must find within themselves to take that next step of investigating their options. I hope this article proves helpful in realizing that a new normalcy is always within reach.

Medical Professionals Reliance Medical Group For A Healthier Happier You!

Routine Testing Is The Secret To Living Well High Cholesterol and Low Blood Pressure High cholesterol puts you at risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Low blood pressure can somewhat offset this risk. Low blood pressure helps keeps the walls of your arteries structurally sound, making it easier for cholesterol to flow through your bloodstream rather than get trapped in scar tissue that forms when your blood pressure elevates. Diet and lifestyle changes can help you lower your cholesterol and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. High Cholesterol and Low Blood Pressure High cholesterol measures 200 mg/dl – milligrams per deciliter of blood – or more. The higher your cholesterol measures about 200 mg/ dl, the greater your risk of heart disease. If your cholesterol reaches 240/mg/dl, you face twice the risk for heart problems than someone whose cholesterol measures 200 mg/dl, according to the American Heart Association. A reading of 120/80 mm Hg – millimeters of mercury – is considered normal. Low pressure means that either your systolic blood pressure – the top number – measures less than 180 or your diastolic blood pressure – your lower number – is less than 80. Lifestyle Changes Some factors that put you at risk for heart attacks and strokes remain beyond your control. Men, persons older than 50 and anyone with a family history of heart disease face higher risk. But you can likely lower your cholesterol by

losing excess weight and exercising more. If you smoke, quitting will help lower your low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also known as the “bad” cholesterol because of its reputation for clogging arteries. If you drink alcohol, one or two drinks a day may elevate your high-density lipoprotein – HDL or “good” cholesterol – but drinking more could prove harmful. Dietary Recommendations You can help lower your cholesterol by changing the amount and type of fat in your diet. MayoClinic.com recommends limiting your daily cholesterol to between 200 mg and 300 mg, your daily saturated fat consumption to between 16 g and 22 g, your daily trans fat intake to 2 g and your total daily fat to between 44 and 78 g. Those at high risk for developing heart disease should follow the lower range of recommendations. Considerations You can limit dietary cholesterol by cutting back on eggs, shrimp, organ meats and whole milk dairy. You can keep your saturated fat within the guidelines by choosing lean portions of protein and keeping portions small – about 3 ½ oz. Limit trans fat by substituting olive oil for margarine and shortening when cooking at home and avoid commercial baked goods and restaurant foods cooked in shortening. Add more healthy oils to your diet from sources such as fish, nuts and seeds. Consult your doctor about your low blood pressure if it presents symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, fatigue or rapid, shallow breathing.

What Is A Neurological Exam? A neurological exam helps doctors to diagnose peripheral neuropathy. A neurological examination may include the following: • The history: questions concerning your symptoms and condition • An evaluation of neurological function • Diagnostic tests • Electrodiagnostic tests • Blood tests • Other common tests History You should be prepared to discuss your symptoms in detail with your doctor. Your doctor will ask you to describe your symptoms, when you experience them, how long the episodes last and the amount of discomfort or pain you experience. The more specific you can be about the tingling, numbness, weakness or other symptoms you are experiencing, the easier it will be for your doctor to understand your condition. Your doctor may also ask you general health questions that you may seem unrelated to your symptoms, but are in fact important. These questions could be about whether or not your feel faint, nauseated or tired. The doctor may also ask if your bladder control and sexual function are normal. You will also be asked if you are suffering from any other illnesses and if you are taking medications. The physician will then perform a physical exam to test for loss of vibratory sensation. He or she will test ankle jerks and other reflexes. Sensations n the feet and hands will be evaluated with a pin. Since some neuropathies are hereditary, your doctor will ask if other members of your family have suffered from any type of neuropathy or neurological disorder. Neurological Evaluation A neurological evaluation consists of a physical exam and a number of simple and painless tests. The purpose of these tests is to assess your neurological function, including your muscle strength, how your autonomic nerves are functioning, and your ability to feel different sensations.

Jennifer Cruz Medical Assistant

Briana Boyer

Office Supervisor & Medical Assistant

Ludys Katz

As a Medical Assistant, Jennifer Cruz wears many different hats at Reliance Medical Center. In addition to helping patients facilitate their appointments, she also performs a myriad of administrative and clinical tasks in the office. One of her most vital responsibilities includes working with insurance companies for verifications and authorizations. Born in Puerto Rico, she graduated from Jackson Memorial High School and from the Star Technical Institute in 2003 with a certificate in Medical Assisting. Part of her duties at Reliance Medical Group also includes providing patient care and performing tests, which have been ordered by the providers. At the present time she is attending school for billing. Jennifer has previously worked as a Nursing Aid and office manager. Throughout her experience she has developed a special affinity for working with the geriatric population. She has learned that working with this population gives her the opportunity to make a vital difference in their lives.

Briana Boyer works as the Office Supervisor as well as a Medical Assistant at Reliance Medical Group. Born in Toms River and a graduate of Brick Memorial High School, she knew very early on that working in health care and helping people was her passion. While working with individuals with disabilities for about 4 years she gained extensive knowledge and experience about the field. She adds, “The more I took these patients on their different doctor’s appointments and learned their diagnoses, the more I actually wanted to learn.” It was then she decided to attend the American Institute to become a Medical Assistant. Briana completed her externship at Reliance Medical Group with over 240 hours of work. It was during this time she knew that working in a doctor’s office was exactly the right fit for her. “I have always had a heart for helping other people,” she said. As fate would have it, she was offered a job and happily began her career. After just a few months, Briana was promoted to Office Manager. She says, “I am now doing what I love most and am a part of our patients’ journey to a healthier lifestyle.”

On a typical day at the office, Nurse Practitioner Ludys Katz provides care to approximately 15 to 25 patients. She performs full physicals, does follow up appointments, and handles sick visits. In addition, she also provides assessments and diagnostic and medical management of chronic diseases including Diabetes and Asthma. Ludys has vast experience working in hospitals, nursing homes, and private practices. Over the last 10 years she has also accumulated experience in diverse fields of nursing like Cardiology and medical gerontology. Ludys is an Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner who is Board Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for Adult Gerontology. Fluent in Spanish and English, she received her degree in Nursing in 2014. She furthered her career by obtaining her Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2017. She adds, “I believe in building long lasting relationships with my patients and working together to accomplish a common goal.” In addition to caring for her patients, she loves spending time with her family and traveling.

Myths, Darn Myths, and Mixed Messages

“T

he great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie, deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive and unrealistic.” Truth be known, when it comes to our health, it is important to study the facts to understand how behaviors or change of behaviors may benefit us and those we love. The healthcare industry is constantly making new breakthroughs and reporting important facts on studies. However, the Internet, testimonials by friends and neighbors, and marketing gimmicks have put out a ton of misinformation about exercise. And it may be difficult to discern. We all want to be in our best possible health and shape, and when we read something that “makes sense” or seems possible, we are likely to believe it even if there is no science to back up the claims. Let’s take a few moments to debunk some commonly held exercise myths.

Dr. Nina’s What You Need to Know: To Debunk Exercise Myths Myth: I can exercise my way out of a bad diet From a practical perspective, exercise, while critical to a healthy lifestyle, is never going to be an effective way of losing weight, unless you have the training schedule—and the willpower—of an Olympic athlete (note: the vast majority of Olympic athletes do not follow a bad diet). In order to burn 500 calories, a 160-pound adult would need to walk at 3.5 miles/hour for 80 minutes; jog at 6.5 miles/hour for 40 minutes; cycle in spin class 39 minutes; mow the lawn 60 minutes; swim laps 53 minutes; or Zumba 50 minutes. It is an awful lot more than most people realize! And brings some credence to my saying that a moment on your lips can mean an eternity on the treadmill or bike.

Myth: Spot training will give me that six-pack Doing a thousand crunches a day is likely to burn calories and make your abdominal muscles sore and toned, but it does not necessarily translate to seeing those “rock-hard abs” we so desire. Although it seems logical, spot training, or exercising one part of our body, with the hopes it will look amazing may leave us disappointed. Unless the fat that lies above those muscles disappears, we will not be able to see those toned muscles. In order to get that “six-pack,” we need to burn fat throughout the body via cardiovascular exercise and a balanced diet.

It should be noted that heavy sweating can cause you to become dehydrated and, as a result, force your kidneys to conserve water and hang onto toxins. So the next time you know you will be breaking out a sweat, take a bottle of water with you.

Myth and Truth: You must stretch before you exercise

There is no scientific evidence that static stretching—defined as stretching while you stay in place such as bending over to touch your toes or pulling your ankles towards your hips—before a workout can prevent injury or decrease delayed-onset muscle soreness. In fact, some studies have shown that static stretches lasting longer than one minute can strain your muscles and slow you down. On the other hand, dynamic stretching, such as swinging your arms or walking lunges, increase your range of movement and blood and oxygen flow to your muscles prior to exertion. This may help not only improve performance, but decrease your risk for injury. And the truth be told, it can be challenging to navigate through all the information, tidbits, and advice that is thrown our way. Separating fact from fiction is key to finding the best workout regimen for our lifestyle and body type.

Myth: You sweat toxins out of your body Our body has effective, built-in toxin elimination mechanisms via our liver, kidneys, and gut—not by sweating. The primary function of perspiration is to regulate body temperature. When our body is hot, we sweat and the moisture makes our skin feel cooler; when it evaporates into the environment, it takes with it the heat. Sweat is mostly comprised of water (99%) and a small amount of salt, proteins, carbohydrates, and urea. “Trace,” or minuscule, amounts of toxins may be detected in sweat, but they get rid of less than 1% of the body’s total toxin content.

Nina Radcliff, M.D., is a practicing physician; a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists where she serves on committees for young physicians and communications. Often called upon by media to speak to medical health topics impacting our lives today, Dr. Nina is passionate about sharing truths for healthy, balanced living as well as wide preventative measures.

This article is for general information only and should not be used for the diagnosis or treatment of medical conditions and cannot substitute for the advice from your medical professional. Dr. Nina has used all reasonable care in compiling the current information but it may not apply to you and your symptoms. Pediatric Services Grab A Book!

Written By Amanda Metzger Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center.

Instilling a strong foundation of reading when children are young is essential for them to achieve academic success. My favorite part of the day is when I cuddle up with my three children and we read a wonderful book together. It is our time to connect and have fun; little do they realize they are learning as well. I have always kept books around our home. Whether they are on bookshelves, in baskets, or on a table, we strive to keep them a part of our daily lives. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle has been a favorite in our home since our first child was born. It has been amazing to see this book be passed along within our family throughout the years. I read it to them, and now they are able to enjoy reading it to each other. Something as simple as reading the same book over and over to your children can help them to become lifelong readers.

Reading aloud to young children has been shown to be beneficial for their behavior and development. When parents and loved ones read aloud to young children, it creates a special relationship, and from that exchange they are able to learn by interacting back and forth with words and sound. Reading aloud helps children develop language and listening skills and begins to prepare them for most things they will learn throughout the years in school. Reading can help teach children empathy, as well. When they read about the characters in the stories, they are able to understand that character’s perspective. This allows them to relate to the characters and opens up their imagination as they hear the stories play out. Interactive reading and parent participation have been shown to positively influence children’s behavior. It helps to teach them how to focus and creates a calmness, which is beneficial when they are in a classroom setting. Plus, it is a great way to bond with your child and create a calming atmosphere before bedtime. Throughout my teaching career I have been able to see firsthand how consistent reading practice can help children succeed in all academic areas. Reading is important for all subjects in school. Whether it is related to spelling and grammar or word problems in a math lesson, reading skills come into play across the board. This emphasis on daily reading and comprehension allows students to feel confident in all areas and leads to success in the classroom. It has always been important for me to model what good readers do, in the classroom and at home. I often ask questions throughout a book, which teaches children to really think about and understand what it is they are actually reading. Reading with expression and changing the tone of your voice throughout a story or book helps keep children engaged and also shows them that they can do the same while they are reading. This can help bring a story to life and instill a love of reading and books. There are many fun ways to get your child excited about reading. One of my favorites is setting up a reading nook together. This would be a fun place for them to go while they read. Pillows, beanbag chairs, or a comfy little area of the house with some of their favorite books is a great idea to consider. Taking trips to the local library is another great way to get your child excited about reading. Making it an event can build enthusiasm and make picking out a new book seem like an adventure. Plus, the library offers great programs, such as story times and book clubs. They can even sign up for their own library card, which can be very thrilling in itself. Having your child make his or her own book is a clever way to encourage reading. This allows them to open up their imagination and create their own stories and illustrations about things that interest them. When children understand that reading is fun and interesting, they will begin to see it not as an assignment but as an enjoyable activity. If you find that you and your child could use some support finding reading to be a joyful activity and that it is hindering their progress in school, come visit me at Seashore Pediatric Therapy Center, where I can help instill a love of reading for your child through our tutoring services. Happy Reading!

Business Spotlight Dr. Kathy Banks received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and received her DMD from Temple University School of Dentistry. After dental school, she completed an Advanced Education General Dentistry program and then completed her 4-year specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. She was later awarded her Board Certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Board of Anesthesiology. She is currently the first female Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and organization dedicated to improving the quality and safety of patient care by advancing innovation in oral and maxillofacial surgery research and education.

In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Kathy Banks is highly focused on perfecting her team in the office. Although it did take some time, she has now found the ideal fit. Team members Monica, Danielle, Diana, Amanda, Jessica and Sonya work exceptionally well together and enable her to provide the excellent patient care that she is known for. She adds, “The most important aspect of our team is that we mutually respect and care about one another. Silly interpersonal conflicts and office politics are distractions, and stand in the way of delivering excellent patient care. It takes extra work to achieve and maintain this level of professionalism, but it allows us to keep our focus centered on our patients.”

As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, she has had numerous papers published and is a frequent presenter for continuing education classes. With more than 15 years of experience treating patients of all ages, she is able to treat most of them comfortably in her office. However, when circumstances dictate, Dr. Banks holds hospital privileges in three hospitals: Jersey Shore University Hospital, Southern Ocean Medical Center, and Community Medical Center. She treats patients on an outpatient basis when necessary. Another enhancement to her practice has been starting ongoing education in various areas of expertise. “Before opening this office, I witnessed staff members elsewhere going through the motions of their jobs. I did not want this to be my team. As a life- long learner, I insist on investing in the professional development of all of my team members, including myself. The more knowledge and new skills we are able to master, the more we have to offer our patients. Adding new skills and reinforcing techniques we already practice will enhance our patients’ experience from start to finish,” she says.

Patients Are Treated Like Family at the Office of Dr. Kathy Banks

Dr. Banks’ philosophy is that every patient deserves to be treated like a family member. This often means that team members must stay late, come in early, or adjust their lunch hours to accommodate a patient with a truly serious condition. This is their commitment: to provide excellent, quality care to their patients. When you are a patient of Dr. Banks, quality care begins the moment you call the office, and continues until discharged. She explains, “Staff members Danielle and Diana guide patients through the registration and scheduling process, and answer the myriad of insurance related questions and concerns. Then, Amanda and Arly take over with the “hands on “ part of patient care, assisting me with evaluation, taking x-rays and the surgicalanesthetic aspects of care. These three ladies are so compassionate with our patients that they are able to make a surgical appointment pleasant. Their clinical abilities allow me to perform my work at a much higher level,” she adds. New technology plays a big part in the office of Dr. Banks. “Hands down, the number one development in oral and maxillofacial surgery has been integrating 3D imaging into patient care. Cone Beam CT scanning is indispensable in diagnosing common oral conditions such a cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth ” she says. She also uses 3D images for dental implant surgery and can perform virtual surgical implant surgery using either of the two software programs. She explains, “From this work up, a surgical guide can be fabricated and used in the surgery procedure so that the implants are placed in the exact angulation and depth as planned. This is called “guided surgery” and I use this routinely.” Another use for the CBCT scan is jaw reconstruction. “I have used CBCT scans to plan orthognathic surgery procedures where the jaws are cut and repositioned so the teeth match up. The virtual surgery plan done on the computer is used to generate surgical guides that help me perform the jaw surgery with enhanced precision,” she says.

Featured On The Cover Interview with Dr. Nina Paonessa

An Expert in Offering Concentrated Expertise in All Areas of Colon and Rectal Surgery As a board-certified general surgeon and proctologist, Dr. Nina Paonessa believes in patient-centered care and preserving each patient’s independence, well-being and dignity. Specializing in colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Paonessa has been in practice for over 15 years. She completed her undergraduate education at Siena College in Loudonville, NY with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Magna Cum Laude, and a member of the honor society, Alpha Kappa Alpha. After completing her undergraduate studies, Dr. Paonessa completed medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA and completed her colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA. CW: When did you first decide to become a surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: I discovered my love for the specialty during my second year of general surgery residency. I began to notice how patient outcomes varied based upon the training/skill of the surgeon. Colorectal surgery is a field in which specialized training truly impacts patient outcome. For example, in certain cases, the difference between patients having a permanent colostomy versus bowel continuity after colorectal resection is dependent upon the skill/training of the surgeon. Additionally, I had the privilege of doing a one-month rotation on the colorectal surgery service of Dr. Douglas Wong at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. It was here that I truly fell in love with the specialty of colorectal surgery. CW: What do you like the most about being a colorectal surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: For me, the most rewarding part is when I can make a positive impact on a patient’s quality of life and well-being, whether it be curing a patient of colon or rectal cancer and restoring bowel continuity, to ridding a patient of their hemorrhoid symptoms, to freeing a patient from the social isolation caused by their symptoms of fecal incontinence. A fringe benefit of my specialty is that I have the privilege of meeting so many wonderful and unique individuals. It is truly rewarding working with each of my patients.

cases in which the cancer can be cured, dealing with a diagnosis of cancer is stressful and at times, life altering. I truly feel for the patients and try to make the difficult road ahead of them a bit easier. CW: How would you describe your practice’s philosophy? Dr. Paonessa: In my practice, my staff and I share the same philosophy of “the patient comes first.” No matter whether it is benign or malignant disease for which a patient is coming to the office, we understand that it is a stressful and oftentimes an embarrassing situation for them. In my office, each patient’s privacy and dignity is preserved and respected to the utmost degree. We realize that just because we take care of colorectal problems every day, does not mean that patients are used to dealing with these issues. CW: What are the most common reasons why a patient would schedule an appointment at your practice? Dr. Paonessa: Men and women of all ages schedule appointments at my office for many reasons. These include hemorrhoids, fissures, colorectal cancer screenings via colonoscopy, treatment of colorectal cancer, squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, fecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction. CW: Tell us a success story that you have experienced over the years. Dr. Paonessa: We have had many success stories over the last 15 years. One of my favorite success stories is that of a woman who was hospitalized for perforated sigmoid diverticulitis with a large intraabdominal abscess. I was requested to see her as a second opinion as the first surgeon proposed immediate surgery consisting of sigmoid colon resection and end colostomy. After careful history and physical exam and review of her CT scans, I proposed a plan of bowel rest, IV antibiotics and percutaneous drainage of the abscess. This allowed for the abscess to reduce in size to merely a small cavity. The patient was eventually taken to surgery, during which she had a sigmoid colon resection and colorectal anastomosis, without even a temporary stoma (bag). She recovered uneventfully and was able to return to work. CW: describe some of your favorite leisure activities. Dr. Paonessa: Outside of being a surgeon, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also enjoy cooking and trying new recipes, reading, dancing and spending time at the beach.

CW: What is the most difficult part of being a colorectal surgeon? Dr. Paonessa: Explaining to a patient about their diagnosis of cancer is the most difficult part of being a colorectal surgeon. Even in many

Meet the Women of Paonessa Colon and Rectal Surgery As a board certified general surgeon and proctologist, Dr. Paonessa and her staff at Paonessa Colon and Rectal Surgery are all about providing personalized care in a friendly environment. Her practice specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of diseases of the colon and rectum. The patient’s dignity and comfort remain their top priority and the staff is there to guide patients through every step of care. While many of the minimally invasive treatment options for anorectal disorders are performed right in the office, her intent is to tailor each treatment plan to the individual needs of her patient. Dr. Paonessa’s primary interest is for her patients to return to their prior level of functioning. Additionally, during and after treatment she remains a stalwart presence for them and continues her stellar level of care. Pictured L-R: Holly Dingus, CMA, Dr. Nina Paonessa, Allison Bambino, CMA, and Patricia Morello, CMA

Patricia Morello, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) CW: Describe what your job entails. My job is all about giving patients the best care and helping them feel as comfortable as possible. Part of my routine is taking their vitals and overall health history. I also assist Dr. Paonessa with different procedures and help to ensure our patients have the best overall experience while visiting the office. CW: What is the most rewarding part of your job? I really enjoy interacting with the patients and meeting new people and getting to know them. It feels great to be able to assist them with their questions and concerns while visiting Dr. Paonessa. At our office, patients are considered family and we go above and beyond as we would for our own families, and that is the most rewarding feeling to me. Allison Bambino, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) CW: What do you find most challenging about your position? I really enjoy all aspects of my position. I look forward to gaining new responsibilities as I learn and become more experienced. CW: What is a typical day like for you? The first thing I do when I arrive is check the schedule for the day. I set up the patient’s chart and exam room depending upon what they are coming in to see Dr. Paonessa for. This could be preparing paperwork for an outpatient procedure or setting up the exam room for a minor procedure in the office. I make sure that every instrument Dr. Paonessa needs is ready and I assist her with the procedure in the office. Other days, I am entering the patient’s vital signs, health history, and medications into their chart.

CW: What is the age of the typical patient? The age varies depending upon the reason for their visit. The typical age for a colonoscopy is between 50 and 75 years old. The typical age for a patient with incontinence is usually 60 and older. There really isn’t a typical age for patients with hemorrhoids, pilonidal cyst/abscess, fissures, fistulas, or thrombosed hemorrhoids. We’ve had patients as young as teenagers and as old as 90 years old come to our office. Holly Dingus, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) CW: What do you enjoy most about working for Dr. Paonessa? The reason I chose this profession was to help others and be of service in my small place in the world. The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with and helping the patients who enter our doors. Another huge bonus is that I get to work with inspiring women everyday who encourage and help each other. We have created an amazing team and a beautiful little family. CW: What sets Dr. Paonessa apart from other colon and rectal facilities? Although I cannot speak of other practices, I can write of the amazing woman I work for. “She burned too bright for this world.” These are words written by Emily Bronte. They are words that I have read hundreds of times, and they come to mind when I think of Dr. Paonessa. Her compassion and kindness for others knows no bounds. It is her intelligence and fierce determination that continue to astound me. Finally, her heart of gold does not seem of this modern world or of this hurried time.

Mary Whiton Calkins

The early stages of psychology are most associated with the name Sigmund Freud, who is known as the founder of psychoanalysis, otherwise known as therapy. However, approximately 20 years ahead of Freud, Mary Whiton Calkins was Feministvoices.com. born to Charlotte and Wolcott Calkins. Mary was the oldest of five children and raised in a religious, disciplined household. Mary was raised between Buffalo, New York and Newton, Massachusetts. Mary was educated and entered into college not as a starting “freshman” but a sophomore. Mary began her undergraduate studies at Smith College. As most young adults who begin their college education, we are influenced by our environment or experiences. Mary was no different. Mary had a younger sister who passed away in the spring of Mary’s first year of college. It is reported that the death of Mary’s sister had a significant impact on Mary, which led her to study the field of psychology. After taking a year away from college, Mary returned to Smith College and graduated with degrees in Classics and Philosophy. Mary’s family took an 18-month trip through Europe. When Empathysites.com the family returned to the United States, at the guidance of Mary’s father, Mary interviewed for a professor position at Wellesley College. It was at Wellesley where Mary also began her teaching in the field of psychology on the condition that Mary needed to obtain the appropriate training in the field. Although Mary had received offers from high-level institutions, she wanted to remain close to her family, which led Mary to Harvard University. At the time, the institution did not recognize women as students; however, they could partake in what was known as “graduate seminars.” Mary was recognized as “a faculty member from a college seeking post-graduate instruction.” Mary began her “seminars” with the foundations of psychology and also experimental psychology, which was a field of interest for Mary. Mary is most notable for her research related to the study of dreaming. After one year attending seminars at Harvard, Mary returned to Wellesley and is known to have created the first experimental psychology laboratory at the all-female college. Mary again returned to Harvard and petitioned to be recognized as a student, which she was denied but was accepted to return again as a faculty member participating in seminars. At Harvard, Mary had the ability to work with the newly appointed head of psychology, Hugo Munsterberg, who recognized Mary’s intellect, and she made an impression on him. Hugo approached the head of Ubysses.ca

Harvard to request that Mary be accepted into the PhD program at Harvard as she was the most impressive student and most qualified to support him with his work in experimental psychology. Suffice to say Mary was once again denied. Mary continued to work with professors Archive.org at Harvard and even participated in a doctoral examination, which she passed, and which the university refused to acknowledge. Archive.org It is reported that in 1902, Radcliffe College, which was an undergraduate college associated with Harvard University, attempted to offer Mary and three other women doctorate degrees and Mary refused. Then again, 25 years later, a pool of influential alumni again petitioned Harvard to grant Mary her doctoral degree, which again was denied. Even in 2019 it is reported that Mary has not been granted her official doctorate from Harvard University. It is known that there have been petitions created by educational institutions in with students attempting to advocate for Mary’s hard work and contribution to the field of psychology and have not had success. Mary is known to have developed the concept of self-psychology, which is the study of understanding the “self ” and conscious awareness of experiences, drives and behaviors. Mary has published many textbooks and writings associated in the subject areas of psychology and philosophy. Mary never let the rejection of Harvard University hold her back. Mary worked hard in the fields of philosophy and psychology, continuing to study behavior, dreams and the environmental effects on behavior. Mary’s contributions to the field of psychology made a significant impact during her tenure as a “seminar” attendee at Harvard University. So much so that her instructors and fellow students respected her work in the field, which led them to reflect on their own self-awareness and determined that she should have been considered as an equal and attempted to advocate for her right to receive a doctorate degree. Mary remained close to home and resided with her family until her death in 1930. I am sure that it is not often that we take a step back and truly reflect on our own self-awareness and how our environment and experiences may shape our behaviors. As we begin our journey toward the end of another year, I encourage everyone to take a moment and contemplate their own self-awareness and to enjoy some muchneeded self-care!

Navigate The Stars With Thrilling Shows At The Novins Planetarium

The Robert J. Novins Planetarium is one of the largest and most active planetariums in New Jersey! Featuring some of the latest projection technology, the Planetarium brings you the universe in innovative and exciting new ways! Its dome is a virtual 360-degree video space, no longer restricted to simply an earthbound view of the sky, so the staff can take you on a journey from the smallest scale to the edge of the universe! In addition to children’s and general admission shows, the Planetarium presents special events. From spooky Halloween treats to musical holiday arrangements, audiences of all ages will get in the spirit! Over 25 spectacular laser shows, which include “Laser Fright Night,” “Laser Queen,” and two different “Pink Floyd” shows (just to name a few) fill the dome with color and music as brilliant lasers dance among the stars. The popular “PJ Night!” shows give children a chance to wear their favorite PJs to a monthly show that is always a dancing, singing, and learning good time! The Robert J. Novins Planetarium offers a whole lot more than great shows: Looking for a place to have a Birthday Party? A variety of packages are available that include a party room and show tickets. If you are looking for a unique gift, stop by The Space Store, which features star charts, child-friendly telescopes, space toys, and much, much more! School Groups, Pre-K to Grade 12, are booked during the regular school year. Clubs and organizations can also book their group or get astronomy “to-go” with traveling programs! Become a stargazer! Be a part of our universe and we’ll show you the sun, the moon, the stars, and beyond. For the very best celestial entertainment, come visit the Novins Planetarium at Ocean County College! For more show information, call 732-255-0342 or visit the Novins Planetarium web page at go.ocean.edu/planetarium for an updated schedule.

Are you a compassionate and caring individual looking to make a difference in the lives of others?

Our no cost 40-hour training will certify you to advocate for people who have experienced sexual violence. The training infuses principles of anti-oppression and multiculturalism in every step. Advocates will gain a strong understanding of how racism, oppression, and inequality intersect with sexual violence, which will help them best serve every survivor they interact with in their role.

Advocacy is based on the principle that the individual is the best person to make decisions in their life. Once trained you will be on call to provide crisis intervention, educational information and resources to survivors of sexual violence. All potential advocates encouraged to apply. Bilingual advocates needed.
