Upgraded ‘health bus’ offers more services JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For more than 20 years, marginalized residents in downtown Toronto have relied on the Sherbourne Health Centre’s Health Bus program to get the medical attention and care they need. Now, thanks to a $300,000 donation from the Rotary Club of To-
ronto, a new and improved Health Bus will be able to provide an expanded array of services to some of the city’s most vulnerable people. The new Health Bus offers an enhanced clinic space, blood tests and vaccinations, counselling services and harm reduction services in addition to its usual spate of medical checkup and treatment services. For many, it serves as the
first - and in some cases, only point of contact with the health care system. It is now home to a private, fully-equipped exam room, a separate space for counselling and referrals, and a chairlift to ensure it is accessible to all who need it. "We focus on homeless individuals, the underhoused and other individuals who face barriers to
the health care system - isolated seniors, newcomers to Canada, the LGBTQ community and street-involved youth," said Chantel Marshall, director of the Health Bus program. "We provide on-the-spot care, but really it’s all about getting a relationship built to help people get

Schools, rec facility and child care centre expected to open in 2019 JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com In short order, the downtown CityPlace neighbourhood has gone from being largely unused land to being home to 20,000 people. Thanks to a partnership between the City of Toronto and the public and Catholic school boards, the area is moving closer to becoming a full community. The three parties gathered near Canoe Landing Park on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to officially mark the start of construction on a mixed-use facility, at the southwest corner of Fort York Boulevard and Brunel Court (near Spadina Avenue), that will include a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) school, a Toronto Catholic District School Board
(TCDSB) school, a recreation centre and a child care centre. Construction is expected to be completed in 2019. The addition of such vital amenities will greatly improve the quality of life for the thousands of people who live in the CityPlace community and the surrounding area. "This is, to put it simply, the next step in building a far more livable downtown," said Ward 20 Coun. Joe Cressy (Trinity-Spadina) at the groundbreaking ceremony. "This project is decades in the works . but it is the result of proactive planning. It is the result of a master plan when we came together as school boards and the city and said ’how do we build a neighbourhood, not just build towers?’" Cressy added that CityPlace has gone from being a largely unused portion of the city to becoming home to 20,000 people over the past 20 years. "Soon enough, they’ll have schools to go to, a community centre to play in, and child care facilities for when they’re young," he said. Mayor John Tory con-
curred, noting that there’s more to building a neighbourhood than simply putting up condo towers. "If we want to have a truly inclusive city - inclusive in every respect . we have to make sure we provide for it," he said. "One of the most essential elements in so doing
is to provide for schools that’s basic - to provide for families, to provide for recreational facilities." The TDSB school will be named Jean Lumb Public School in honour of Lumb, a community organizer, advocate for immigration reform and the first Chinese-
Canadian woman named to the Order of Canada. It will provide 550 student spaces for children from kindergarten through Grade 8. "Families and children will be able to go to school, attend high quality recreational programs and access child care within their community," said TDSB chair Robin Pilkey. The TCDSB’s Bishop Macdonell Catholic Elementary School is named after the first bishop of Upper Canada. It will also feature 550 student spaces from kindergarten through Grade 8. TCDSB vice-chair Frank D’Amico said the model used for the joint development - the TDSB and TCDSB coming together with the city to create a multi-use facility was symbolic of "a future when we come together to share space and learning experiences." The Canoe Landing Recreational Centre will include an "active roof" with green and recreational spaces, community kitchen, indoor play space, solar power and more.

Stewart attended Crescent School, Lawrence Park Collegiate, and held a biology degree from the University of Western Ontario. Prior to the mural unveiling, Tre Packard of the PangeaSeed Foundation noted that he had worked with Stewart on several projects and was shocked to hear of the filmmaker’s death. "I was in Miami working on a (mural) project and we had an extra wall, so I asked an artist if he would paint a tribute to Rob and he got it done in a few days. "That was a light bulb moment - we wanted to find a way to pay tribute to Rob and what he was passionate about."

From his home in Toronto to the depths of the oceans, award-winning documentary filmmaker Rob Stewart was a champion for conservation and the protection of the fragile aquatic ecosystem. Through his films most notably his breakthrough, Sharkwater Stewart aimed to protect the oceans from human threat, a mission he adhered to until his death earlier this year. Stewart was in Florida filming a sequel to Sharkwater, titled Sharkwater: Extinction when he went missing at sea on Jan. 31, and his body was not found for three days. Stewart’s impact is now being recognized in his hometown with the unveiling of a mural in a Green P parking lot at 9
Bedford Rd. earlier this month. The mural, created by art activist organization the PangeaSeed Foundation and StreetARToronto, shows Stewart swimming above a large hammerhead shark with other marine species also depicted. "Rob had a belief that if we work to live in harmony with nature, the world would be a better place," said Rob’s father, Brian, at the mural unveiling. The mural is the latest in a series of tributes to Stewart around the world, including the launch of a Sharkwater boat in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in July and the painting of other murals in his honour. "It’s heartwarming to see how many people around the world he had an impact on," said Stewart’s mother, Sandy, who added that the location in Yorkville was fitting.

Period Purse fall blitz under way

"We believe strongly in giving back to the community we operate in," said Dulux Paints district operations manager Allan Dameon. He noted that after touring the building, he and a colleague were moved by the centre’s breadth of programming, including services for sex workers and abused women who need immediate care and the no-questionsasked food bank. He said the importance of the work being done at NWRC left both of them stunned. "We left the facility and for 15 minutes, we couldn’t
talk, and I couldn’t drive," he said. "Finally, I just said ’we have to paint this place.’" The old home, which has also been an art gallery and a rooming house prior to the NWRC taking the reins, is now fully restored, and the workers who provide vital support could not be more thrilled. "We almost lost this house back in the 90s because of funding," said NWRCT education co-ordinator Darlene King. "We didn’t know how we would fix it up after the flood, but now it looks great." When the Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto (NWRCT) was flooded following a burst pipe around Christmas last year, the facility was forced to temporarily move much of its programs out of its home at 191 Gerrard St. E. While the cleanup was fairly quick, the damage from the flood still left the centre’s home - a large, fourstorey building downtown looking less than perfect, and given the not-for-profit’s lack of resources, it appeared it would continue to look that way for some time. Thankfully, the centre got a makeover Monday, Sept. 11 thanks to Dulux Paints. The company sent a team of painters and a bevy of supplies to the facility, making the water-damaged walls look as good as new. "It took some time to get the place fixed up because there was a lot of damage done," said NWRCT housing outreach co-ordinator Vonnie Gibson. "A lot of things of value got ruined and we lost a lot of the information on our clients." Thankfully, the pipe burst while the centre was closed so no one was hurt, though, a portion of ceiling collapsed on a staff member’s desk. The centre, which provides meals, a food bank, educational and family support, outreach, emergency care and support for survivors of violence, employment and housing support among its many programs for Indigenous women, continued to operate in the aftermath of the flooding, with some programs taking place elsewhere for about a week while repairs were undertaken. "We met some of our clients offsite, especially the women who needed emergency care," Gibson said. Monday’s paint job saw dozens of volunteers from Dulux take up brushes to restore the facility to its former beauty. Between materials and labour, the work carried

Legacy continues with Invictus Games The Toronto International Film Festival may have wrapped up last weekend, but Toronto has kept the red carpet rolled out with the Invictus Games about to take over. If there’s anyone that deserves the spotlight, it’s these soldiers and veterans - about 550 of them from 17 allied nations - who will take part in the event which kicks off with the opening ceremonies Saturday night. Competition takes place from Sunday through to the closing ceremonies the following Saturday night. The nations involved have all asked a lot of their armed forces. For those of us who live in a democracy, such as Canada, we have the privilege and responsibility to question our political leaders - past, present and future - whether the right decisions have been made in the deployment of our troops. What should never be up for debate is the support we must always have for those troops - the men and women we have sent, and continue to send, into harm’s way on our behalf. For Canada, that commitment includes being a part of the Global Coalition against Daesh in Iraq on the heels of a more than 12-year deployment in Afghanistan. These athletes, according to organizers, "have become ill or injured during or as a direct consequence of their service." You can bet they will try to win their events, but they have already won, in some cases hard earned battles, just by participating. Supporters are welcome to check out their efforts. There are some free events. Watch wheelchair tennis at Nathan Phillips Square, archery at Fort York, cycling in High Park, golf at St. George’s Golf and Country Club as well as the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, which is being held on a special course being built on the parking grounds adjacent to the Distillery District. Ticketed events (most at a very reasonable $25) include athletics at York University, swimming at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough and, at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens), indoor rowing, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Beware, some sessions have already sold out. The Invictus Games follow on the heels of this summer’s successful North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) for Indigenous youth. Both events benefited from the facilities bequeathed to us by The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Arguably, this is a much better use of our resources than an Olympics could ever be.

The urban heroes you don’t know about We live with heroes in Toronto, but we don’t know who they are. I met one, Martha Nyame, in Rexdale. From a village in Ghana called Abosamso, she never attended school. Her family was too poor. After emigrating to Canada, she returned to Abosamso in 1994 and saw many children that she knew faced a sad childhood like hers were uneducated. So, she changed their future. What was to be a family home became an orphanage and free school. In Toronto, Nyame worked two jobs and sent every dollar and box of supplies she could to Abosamso. "Even $5 is money," she says. More than 100 children

With a final report and a decision on the fate of the year-long pilot project, which runs from Shaw Street to Avenue Road, expected to be made before the year’s end, Helen Qu thinks an extension to Islington Avenue in Etobicoke would make sense. "As a cyclist, I find that if I have a safe space to bike in, I will more likely stop at the businesses and shop at the businesses versus completely avoiding that stretch (west of Shaw) at all," said the 29year-old Sunnyside resident. "There’s also many schools and libraries on that section of Bloor as well, so it would be a really
good opportunity for our school kids to be able to cycle to their schools." Qu avoids that stretch of Bloor

Robert Zaichkowski, 30, told Metroland Media Toronto he was involved in a collision with a car near Dovercourt Road a few months ago. "I know if the bike lane was there, the driver would have been encouraged to be more careful because the bike lanes give drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians a sense of predictability," the Parkdale resident said. Data collected by city staff shortly after the bike lanes were installed in August 2016 showed the amount of cyclists increased to 4,500 per day from 3,300 per day, with 25 per cent of that increase coming from new cyclists. Also, cars travelling along Bloor decreased to 20,000 per day from 24,500 per day, but travel times increased from Bay Street to Ossington Avenue by an average of four minutes in the morning and around eight minutes in the afternoon. Furthermore, in staff’s latest report issued in June, residents surveyed within the study area showed support for the bike lanes. Zaichkowski thinks an extension near Dundas Street West is urgently needed. "Between Ossington and Lansdowne, there is no east or west cycling route," he said. "But personally, I’d like to see the Bloor bike lanes extend all the way to Kipling." Little Portugal resident Hyedie Hashimoto, 39, said staff should not only extend the bike lanes, but also extend the study itself. "Taking studies within a few months or just a year after the Bloor Street bike lanes have been installed and deciding whether or not to keep them is kind of premature," she said. "It would be nice if they could do studies that are maybe two or three years in, so people are used to the idea that there are bike lanes there and get used to the idea of taking a slight detour of their regular routes to be able to bike on a major arterial road."

The Yonge and St. Clair area is set to get a bit more high-profile with the opening of a pop-up store celebrating the neighbourhood and raising funds for cancer research. Toronto graphic artist Lucas Young will print shirts of his own design on the spot for customers, with some of the designs reflecting the neighbourhood with images and slogans that showcase the area and others that are more abstract, such as a raccoon riding a bicycle. Young was inspired by spending countless hours peoplewatching in the area. "You take cues from the transit, the architecture, the history and the lifestyle of the area," he said. Buying a shirt gives area residents a chance to do more than just show off their neighbourhood pride, as the aptly-named Yonge + St. Clair Store will donate a quarter of the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. The pop-up is being facilitated by Slate Asset Management, which is leading a revitalization of the busy corner. Last year, Slate commissioned a massive mural on St. Clair Avenue East to help bring more colour to the long-overlooked Toronto hub. The store will be located at 1470 Yonge Street and will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays from Sept. 21 to 30.

The Health Bus program does so by partnering with other community agencies downtown that can help clients in a variety of ways. While it is mobile, it typically parks at partner agencies’ spaces on set days. Clients do not need a valid health card or other identification to use the services, but a program worker on the bus can help them get ID.The need for health care and other supports is acute in the downtown core, but Marshall said the hope is that many of the Health Bus’ current clients will soon be able to move away from using it as their primary health care provider. "We want to connect them with the Sherbourne Health Centre or another health care centre in the area if that other facility would better suit their needs," she noted. "Another big part of what do is (emergency room) diversion - keeping people from needing to access the ER as a primary care provider." The Health Bus routinely has about 10,000 visitors per year. The new bus arrived at the Sherbourne Health Centre on Thursday, Sept. 14. The study looked at 11 areas of noise management at 26 comparator airports around the world to identify potential new programs to be adopted at Toronto Pearson. This is the release of the report’s findings. There will be opportunities to speak with experts, including Toronto Pearson staff. This meeting is not focused on decisions around runway usage.
