Forever Carroll Campaign exceeds $100 million goal Abrial Neely Campus Editor On Friday, Sept. 9, John Carroll University celebrated the close of the Forever Carroll Campaign. The campaign, which officially launched in 2013, sought to “enrich academics, build upon the University’s Jesuit Catholic heritage and enhance the overall student experience to achieve an even higher level of excellence.” The campaign successfully raised $104,030,367 to put toward the new vision. The funds received created 97 new scholarships for students, totaling $40.97 million. The benefits of the donations also included but are not limited to infrastructure improvements, sports improvements and 18 new endowments for professorships, chairs and programs. Jeanne Colleran, Provost and Academic Vice President, addressed the room at the Forever Carroll Campaign Gala, expressing her gratitude to all those who supported the campaign. “On behalf of the faculty and staff, I am here to express our deep gratitude for all of our donors, who have so generously supported learning on our beautiful campus. Our students have already been provided with so many opportunities and benefits from your generosity, and many more to come,” said Colleran. President Rev. Fr. Robert L. Niehoff, S.J., also showed appreciation through a carefully crafted message. “Thanks to the tremendous generosity of 21,961 alumni and friends, John Carroll University has surpassed our initial $100 million goal for the Forever Carroll Campaign and raised more than $104 million. It is even more humbling to note that 13,407 of our Forever Carroll supporters were first time donors to the University. To each and every donor who contributed to the Forever Carroll Campaign, thank you for committing to our vision and for your investment in the future of John Carroll University. We have so much to celebrate! When we held the public kickoff of the Forever Carroll in May 2013, the world was still reeling from an economic recession and this region was challenged by the economic downturn. We set out to raise funds for our key campaign priorities, including scholarships, academic enrichment, building our Jesuit heritage and enhancing the student experience. As we conclude the campaign, the results are inspiring. Donor gifts are helping transform our University and support our faculty, and enabling us to invest more strategically in what matters most–our students. Thank you, again, for your commitment to the future at John Carroll University.”

Students are calling it the Ham/Cam Blackout. On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Hamlin and Campion residence halls experienced a power outage. Students were highly encouraged to evacuate the two buildings late in the evening and were later told not to return until the next morning. The dormitories were experiencing loss of power all day, beginning at 12:30 p.m. First Energy was contacted and responded to the situation and anticipated that power would return soon. At 6 p.m. they were successful in returning power for five minutes before it went out again. According to Residence Life, First Energy said that the first substation, which powers Hamlin and Campion, failed. While they were able to repair it, another substation, that also impacts Hamlin and Campion as well as parts of University Heights, Shaker Heights and Mayfield Heights, failed. Each of the residence halls is equipped with generators so in the event that there is a power outage,
