don’t know about you, but we are ready for the warm weather. It’s about time that we can just hop on the bike and leave for the day without extra layers of clothes and leather. At the same time, I’d like to skip the pollen season. But if a bandana over my face is the only extra layer I have to wear for a month, I’m ok with that. There are PLENTY of places to ride and events to attend in the April Cruisin’ Calendar on page 8. Hopefully you pick something new to attend and have an adventure. At its widest the Carolinas are around 600 miles across, that can be ridden by highway in one day if you’d like, or you can take the backroads and draw it out. We’ve got mountains, beaches and great riding roads in between! The point is, that there is a good amount of territory here in the Carolinas to explore and it’s not too far to get from one end to the other to check out something new. Whatever your riding style, get out there and put on some miles and enjoy the Carolinas from the back of a motorcycle. Make sure to take your Full Throttle Magazine with ya. It makes for some good reading or if you get in a pinch you can wipe your ass with it, just don’t get it on my picture. While you are out riding, you should check out Springers in Greensboro, NC. It is a destination biker bar that features all your favorites: Bike Nights, Parties, Live Music, Cold Drinks, Rides and all things biker. Their 4th Anniversary shindig is gonna go off on April 20th and you should make it a point to be there. If ya miss that and go to Myrtle Beach Bike Week they will be partying there as well. Read all about it in the Cover Story on page 4. We will see ya at both parties!

ny day you ride by SpringerS bar, it’S likely you’ll see a parking lot full of motorcycles. You’ll probably even catch a few folks sittin out on the “front porch”, which is lined with tables and chairs, telling tales and cuttin’ up. Springers owner Jeff Schmid knows what bikers like, cause he’s a fellow rider. As a matter of fact, Jeff and his friends put on quite a few miles every year including trips to Daytona, Key West, Myrtle Beach and all points in between. The photo on the front cover was taken at the famous Southern Most Point bouy on Jeff’s yearly pilgrimage to Key West, FL during Daytona Bike Week. Jeff even hosts Sunday rides that start out of Springers.

There is also a constant stream of charity events that Jeff and Springers either hosts or takes part in. Jeff is a huge supporter of our military and is involved in charity events for the local American Legion Post, the Elks Lodge and the Marine Corps Toys For Tots program at Christmas among other local charities. Jeff’s largest endeavor is supporting the Triad Honor Flight that takes all veterans to DC to tour all the monuments. In fact, Jeff and Springer’s are among the top 2 donors to The Honor Flight each year. This year’s Benefit Ride For The Triad Honor Flight will be in June. There will be live music, food and good times as you support the our Nations Veterans. Make sure you keep your eye on the Cruisin’ Calendar so you don’t miss this event!

Bike Nights are on Tuesday and will break up the work week for ya. $2 domestic can beers go down easy or you can order a mixed drink to your liking. The porch is the place to be on bike night to watch the parade of bikes coming and go-

ing. Bike night is every Tuesday and starting in April, Springers gives out $100 for the Best Bike On The Lot, weather permitting. Ya just gotta ride in for your chance to win!

Springers will also be celebrating their 4th Anniversary Party on April 20. This is THE destination biker bar in Greensboro, NC so you won’t want to miss this party. There will be live music inside the spacious bar room. There are multiple pool tables, ample dance floor and friendship bars to hang around. Jeff always throws a good party and don’t miss out when he’s cooking, you better snag a plate!

If you are at Bike Week in Myrtle Beach, you can hang with the Springers crowd as well! Friday, May 17 at 5pm Jeff throws a party at The Pilot House in Little River, SC. Make sure you wear your Springers gear and come have a blast at this local pub by the waterway! At Springers Pilot House party, anyone wearing Springers shirts or hats get beers on Jeff’s tab from 4 till 6pm. It’s a nice ride up from Myrtle and always a good time!

Springer’s is open 7 days a week. Monday through Thursday from 2:00pm till 12:00am with Bike night on Tuesday, Karaoke on Wednesday, and Cornhole on Thursday. Friday

and Saturday they are open 12pm-2:00am with live music. Sunday is for riding! The bar is open 12pm to 12:00am, and they host an afternoon ride that leaves out every Sunday and will return to Springer’s for food and live music! If people are still hanging around on nights that they close at midnight Springer’s will stay open til 2am, and that happens often! Jeff and his staff work hard to promote what Jeff likes to call “Recess With Alcohol”!

Billy Lane’s Sons Of Speed Vintage Racing Roars Into New Smyrna

aturday march 2nd the new Smyrna Speedway was rumbling with the sound of vintage outlaw motorcycle racing. Billy Lane’s Sons Of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Racing was in town to kick off the events of the nearby Daytona Beach Bike Week. It takes someone special to climb onto a vintage motorcycle, some of them near 100 years old, most of them without brakes, and run full throttle into the banked turns of a speedway track. The pits were buzzing with racers, pit crew and all kinds of motorcycle community royalty. Access to the pits and VIP passes were available and recommended. Just one pass through the pits would put you in contact with the likes of Micheal Lichter, Barbie The Welder, Chris and Heather Callen, Buzz Kanter, Matt Walksler, Jim Domes, Detroit Randy, a score of really talented photographers and a ton of cool bikes. All this coupled with the smell of old engines, grease and high octane fuel made for a set up that was kinda like heaven.

The crowd was still rolling in when the racers took to the track for some parade laps. The riders took to their bikes and whether they were kickstart or pushed off, they fired em up and headed out towards the track. This is the kind of moment that makes your hair stand on end. The sound of the straight pipes on these bikes, the crowd were on their

feet and everyone on pit row was leaned up on the wall watching the racers take their last friendly laps before getting down to some outlaw vintage racing. The field of race bikes are split up into classes keeping the competition stiff. Most of the race bikes were F-Heads and Flathead engines although there is a class for the vintage single cylinder bikes who come out to race too. There are two 45” classes the Hot 45 and the Stock 45. These bikes were 1929-1955 45cu in vintage v-twins with either stock or modified engines. Then there were the Early 61 and Hot 61 classes consisting of 1910-1929 direct drive, no gearbox or clutch, Board Track racers with either stock or modified engines. The 30.50 single cylinder / Peashooter class run together and are also direct drive bikes. The 30.50 Single Cylinder are 500cc board tracers from 1910-1929, and the Peashooters at 19161936 single cylinder speedway and flat track racers. The parade laps had been run, the National Anthem played and the stands were nearing capacity. It was time to race. The racers staged briefly at the end of pit row before

hitting the track. The flag man stood halfway up the track at the start finish line and gave the green flag a professional wave as the pack of bikes went flying by as the came by him accelerating from the pace speed to full throttle! Let me tell you, they were giving it hell going down the straightaway the paved half mile track and going high into the 23 degree banking of turns one and two and on around the track. These races were all intense with battles for the top 3 places going down to the wire in most of them. Jay Wright riding the MC Parts Shack #37w is the local SC Law Tigers rep and took first place in the two heat races and nearly brought home the checkered flag in the finals, but got too high in a corner and scrubbed the wall with his foot peg in a neck to neck race. He still managed to hang on for 2nd place in the Stock 45 class. Like I said, it was intense all day.

Fan favorite and now 12 time winner #13 eBay Jake was running in two classes the Hot 45 class on a bike he pilots for Billy Lane and the Hot 61 for Competition Distribution. The crowd loves Jake, not only for his competitive nature, but his track hijinks. Jake comes past the finish line standing on the foot pegs, with his arms stretched out or riding saddle throughout the parade and pace laps. All though he’s won a number of championships in the Hot 61 class, the first time he sat on the 1919 Harley JD for Competition Distribution was for the 1st heat race! He brought home the win in that class to make his 12th class victory. Jake also brought home the checkered flag in the Hot 45 class on Billy Lane’s #13 bike. His Thirteenth win. But Jake had to work for this one. He fell behind and was in second place by three bike lengths going into the last lap. Somehow he managed to make up that deficit in less than a half mile and took home the W. Jake later said this about the race, “It felt great for me as #13 to get my 13th championship. To do it racing for Billy Lane, in front of my dad and brother and a fairly packed stadium is surreal. The race was crazy, and Nick Hunter and the CycleMo’s 45 were flying, and that is as exciting as it gets. Going into the final lap I knew I had to ride faster and the only way to do that was to keep it wide open going into turn 3 and dive underneath of him as we excited turn 4. The forces pulling me past Nick then in front of him then all the way to the wall. I was looking over and watching his bike catching me, hearing the crowd screaming and seeing them on their feet, and then holding on to win by just a couple feet. It felt awesome and to do it at Daytona Bike Week made it that much more epic for me”. He went on to say, ‘I’ve been having a blast getting to race these historic bikes, that are 85-105 years old. Most people that haven’t attended a sons of speed race haven’t even got to hear a 100 year old Harley run and I get to ride them as hard and as fast as I possibly can.” He’s having a good time being good at this and I don’t blame him. These old motorcycles were kicking ass around the speedway and it looked like fun. After he won the Hot 45 race, Jake came back by the finish line to get the checkerd flag from the flag man and Sons Of

Speed Grand Marshall Brittney Olsen, a six time board track class winner, jumped on the back fender of his bike and rode side saddle waving the checkered flag for a victory lap. It was a spectacular sight and finished off the day in style.

Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Racing It was 100% one of the highlights of the weekend. Hanging out in the pits, watching some great racing on some sweet vintage motorcycles in the Florida spring weather. It doesn’t get any better than that. Billy Lane commented, “Sons of Speed is real serious racing on a serious track. It’s a bike show in motion with historic bikes racing around the track with no brakes. We had a great event and can’t wait to get to TN in May”. The next Sons Of Speed event is at the Tennessee National Raceway in Hohenwald, TN on Saturday, May 25th. Steve’s Leather Celebrates 30 Years Slinging Hides

teve iSley Started Selling leather riding gear at flea markets, with only enough leather to fill the back of a pick up truck, before moving to a brick and mortar store front on Corporation Pkwy in Burlington, NC. Thirty years have past and Steve is still slinging hides out of the same store front. Quality leather is the key and people come from all over to get their leather from Steve’s. Naturally you need a little help from your friends to make it three decades in business. Steve stays on the road setting up as a leather vendor at events across the country and while he is on the road, Tania keeps the store in running order. In fact, Tania has been running the store front for Steve for 13 years. If you want it, you can get it at Steve’s Leather, both Steve and Tania have their own supply so whether you catch Steve at a rally or Tania in the store, the inventory is full!

On Saturday February 24 Steve’s leather was celebrating their business milestone with a little shindig at their Burlington location. There was a tent set up in the front parking lot with deep discounts on leather jackets, vests, chaps and other riding apparel. Tio was slinging hot dogs with all the fixings right by the front door and there was some good old classic rock playing on the speakers. Inside the store was that rich leather smell and leather as far as they eye could see. The rectangle shape store just keeps going and going and the selection is unbelievable. Steve carries only the best quality leather so you can bet on getting a nice piece that will last you a long time. They also have a great selection of patches, stickers, helmets, knives and other accessories. Even though it was an overcast day, there was a steady crowd of folks riding in to help celebrate and catch a deal on some good leather. In the afternoon a big sheet cake was cut and we stood around having a bite and enjoying the shop atmosphere.

Pretty good start eh? Well they are also putting out some pretty cool Brand New custom motorcycles. Not factory customs, not CVO models but HarleyDavidson Motorcycles that are fresh from the factory and then customized in house at Down Home Harley-Davidson. It doesn’t hurt to have techs like W.F Law who is not only certified HD mechanic, but a chopper jockey that landed at Down Home after years of living the lifestyle. Down Home had a brand new 2023 Softail Standard that wasn’t standing out from the crowd in the dealership showroom. So why not get some custom paint slapped on there and wipe off some of

that factory look? So it got the works, a vivid green with a ton of metal flake topped off with some flat black accents and a outline of the classic Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield logo on the tank. Ok, now we are getting somewhere. W.F. liked the progress but wanted to lean into this one and suggested some additional upgrades. “It just wasn’t complete, it was just custom paint on a bone stock bike.” W.F. pointed out. So he suggested that they add a Moto Iron Springer Front End Kit from TC Bros that fits the new M8 Softails. They went with

the black powdercoated finish that matches the frame but highlights the chrome springs. But didn’t stop there either. They kept the 19 inch front wheel size to keep the profile the same but ditched the stock wheels in favor of some more classic looking lace wheels. “We still have the ability to run a 21” front wheel , if that’s what you are into. We just decided to stick with the 19” to keep the stock ergonomics”, W.F. went on. He’s got a good point, it sure would look good with a 21” front wheel, but that will be up to the buyer!

They left the internals alone, I mean, the 2023 Softail Standard only weighs 655lbs and is running a Milwaukee-Eight 107cu-in engine, pushing 87HP and a 110ft-lbs of torque right out of the box. That’ll get you stop light to stop light pretty quick. They did, however, change out the air cleaner to a S&S Teardrop and added some upswept cocktail shaker slipons to the factory exhaust headers building on a classic look. The upswept cocktail shakers fit right to the header pipes, but mounting them to the bike took a little custom engineering. Then they finished it off with a Screamin’ Eagle tune to accommodate the intake and exhaust and make it ready for the road.

There ya have it folks, a brand new, custom Harley-Davidson from Down Home Harley-Davidson. They wiped a little of the factory off of this Softail and it’s ready to be taken home! Even if this bike isn’t your cup o tea, take your ideas to W.F Law and the other techs at Down Home Harley-Davidson and they will help build you your dream bike! From The Bitch Pad Nine Months In Maryland

HoneyBun usually researches his bike rides, and I generally have no idea where we’ll end up. He likes to “make good time”, while I’m “what’s the rush” and “my arse hurts”.

oneybun’S job took uS to hagerStown. at that time, we were getting around on a 2009 H-D CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide (Stardust Silver/Twilight Blue); it was a beauty!

I didn’t know what to expect in this new neck of the woods, so we began exploring. We started with short trips, and ended up seeing every inch of the entire state, and then some. Maryland has it all! I had no idea that Washington DC was just down the road (yes, we rode in Rolling Thunder, and were left speechless). HoneyBun has a compass in his brain and we got to scoot all the backroads without getting lost. It is possible to cross three state lines all in one afternoon: Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. One of our favorite rides was through the Catoctin Mountain Park, with an old covered bridge and lots of winding roads, exiting onto beautiful country lanes. We took off to Baltimore to take in the Fell’s Point Privateer Festival (held along the waterfront with historic ships, live music, crab cakes, and folks wandering around donning pirate gear); of course, we had to check out The Horse You Came In On Saloon, boasting Edgar Allan Poe’s last stop before his untimely death. The Horse is the oldest continually running saloon in America, established in 1775. Another outing took us through sprawling country estates (horsey people), down the highway at the junction of 340 and 50, there was quite the collection of motorcycles at a pub called the Lone Oak Tavern, to which we just had to check out. It’s a “must stop”.

The Skyline Drive in Virginia is another great ride; we have

been up and down it several times. One morning, just after sunrise, we hopped on the bike and hit the road. It’s crazy, but there were more squirrels on the road than I have ever seen at any one given time, ever! We slowed down to a crawl cuz it was like an obstacle course with crazy critters ziggin’ and zaggin’, and they wouldn’t sit still for a decent picture from the bitch pad.

There is so much history in these parts, the Civil War specifically. Maryland has the most landmarks in all of the US. The Mason-Dixon Line separated the Southern Slave States and the Northern Free states. The Battle of Antietam near Sharpsburg was the bloodiest. The area is a National Park with

dozens of silent monuments and hundreds of gravestones. Quiet 2-lane blacktops meander through the rolling hills, perfect for a bike ride. Harpers Ferry WV is a picturesque little town, where the Shenandoah meets the Potomac; during the Civil War, it was a Union army camp and headquarters. It’s a great spot to get off the bike, walk around a bit (there’s a museum and a fort) and stop for a bite. The Appalachian Trail passes through this historic location. The countryside has countless

old stone fences, which I have taken plenty a picture. Luv a good fence, be it stone, split-rail, picket and contemporary, I like ‘em all (and more pictures). My other photo passions are mailboxes, a good woodpile and bales of hay, who knew?

We’ll never forget East Coast Sturgis (Little Orleans) cuz HoneyBun has a permanent reminder on his right calf from a hot pipe when we unexpectantly found ourselves on a dirt road. There’s a badass pub called Bill’s Place just up the way from the primitive campground on Apple Mountain. The entire experience is very “old school”. Worth putting on your Bucket List. Another time, we took a spin out to the coast, and as luck would have it, we happened upon a vintage car and truck show at Ocean City (including hot rods and customs). We booked a room and took in all the sites and sounds. Wow! My man’s favorite is a 1969 Dodge Coronet Superbee and mine is an Olds 442, any year. Enthusiasts gather May and October to drive up and down the drag along the ocean to show off their classics. Another worthy Bucket List item.

More great riding destinations: Frederick VA, Rocky Gap State Park (and lunch at The Mountain House Bar & Grill), any winding road in Pennsylvania with a stop at Gettysburg National Military Park Museum, Annapolis, Washington DC, Alexandria VA, Mt. Vernon VA (not a mountain, but the beloved home of George Washington). There was a corner store not far from our temporary home that claimed to have “beer so cold it’ll make your teeth hurt”. I forgot the name of the place, so I gave it a Google; apparently, lots of locations make that claim. Well, gotta check ‘em all, right?

A weekend in the mountains is good for your soul. You can stay close to some awesome riding roads. Yeah, there are famous roads with names and T-shirts. Those are now crowded with cars and tourist vans. From The Roost you can ride some awesome roads and not deal with tourist traffic. Curves and views abound. The store at the end of the road makes the best pizza in the mountains. Ride to Eat.

Spend all weekend in the creek if you want. Elk Creek is just about perfect, large shallow spot for sitting, slow current for floating, a cool swimming hole and OMG the natural whirlpools in the waterfall will massage you to numbness. Some days we catch a bunch of fish for supper. You can lay in the hammock and listen to the creek as you nap. At night the sound of moving water soothes you to sleep. Wake to the birds chirping since it takes a while for the sun to get down in the valley.

Riders’ Roost is the ideal place for one person to small and large groups. The guy who wants a Biker Friendly place to stay can throw down their tent for a few days. Groups wanting the coolest place for a weekend party have plenty of room to stay and play. There is a nice outdoor kitchen with stove, grills and griddle.

This is a motorcycle campground. David will tell you, “This ain’t no KOA.” Do not plan to bring an RV or big trucks and trailers. There is room for some support vehicles, out of the camping area. Ride your motorcycles.

Expect to make friends at Riders’ Roost. Come sit around our fire and tell us your stories of riding out West last month. Friday and Saturday nights the party is in the game room and on the deck. Sing along with us. A few times this summer David will have bands to rock The Roost.

A Great Day For A Great Cause

Saturday, February 24th turned out to be a great day for a Chili Cook-off. Those who attended Tilley Harley-Davidson’s Annual Chili Cook-off had a chance to try some delicious culinary creations, while mingling and shopping.

A $5 donation allowed attendees to make their way down the line and sample each of the entries, then cast their vote for their favorite chili in the People’s Choice award. There was also a Best Chili award. In all, there were twelve contestants that entered the competition, including last year’s winner, Dave Carmen. After receiving our tickets, we made our way down the multiple tables lined up. The cooks who entered the competition appeared proud of their concoctions and ready to impress all who tasted it. I noticed pots of all shapes and sizes ready for us to try. There were also plenty of fix-in’s, like sour cream, cheese, onions, hot peppers, crackers, corn chips, and, of course, corn bread.

Competition appeared fierce and after a lot of tasting and careful consideration, the judges decided that the winner of the Best Chili award should go to Ricky Rhyne, representing the Statesville, NC Shriners. Once the votes were tallied, it was determined that the winner of the People’s Choice award was Jimmy McDaniel, otherwise known as “Local Badass Chili & Cornbread Master”.

As I tasted each bowl I was impressed with the various flavor profiles and how different each bowl tasted. Some with beans, some not. Some with ground meats, some chunks. A few that were quite spicy and a few that were relatively mild. While I had a favorite chili and cast my votes accordingly, I appreciated all of them and each of

It turned out to be a fun time for a great cause. When it was all said and done, $797 were raised to benefit the Statesville Shrine Club and the Shriner’s Children Hospital. It was a great way to support a worthy cause while enjoying an opportunity for some fun, food and fellowship.

Harley-Davidson & Freedom Biker Church’s 13th Annual Chili Cook-Off, Saturday, February 24, 2024. This thrilling event, sponsored by Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson and Freedom Biker Church, promised a day filled with fiery flavors, friendly competition, and roaring motorcycles.

Prizes and trophies were up for grabs and the competition was fierce as teams from all around gathered to showcase their culinary prowess. Each team proudly displays their name and number, their tents decked out in creative themes that reflect their passion for chili and motorcycles. As the tents line the front lawn of the dealership, the stage is set for a chili extravaganza like no other.

Judges, armed with spoons and eager taste buds, meander through the rows of tents, sampling each chili with anticipation. There were so many mouthwatering options to try, every spoonful offered a new adventure in flavor. Meanwhile, attendees cast their votes for their favorite chili, adding to the excitement of the event.

After much deliberation and tasting, the winners were announced. Taking the coveted first-place title is the HOG Chapter, with their signature chili that revved up taste buds and stole the show. Coming in at a close second is Ben Hutchins, followed by the Yey Haw Clutch Cookers in third place. Hottest Chili was awarded to Killer Mans Sons MC; while the Smoothest Chili award went to Three Chicks. And let’s not forget the Trailblazers, who not only impressed with their chili but also took home the Best in Show Booth Display award, proving that they not only know how to cook but also how to create an unforgettable chili experience.

outhern riderS motorcycle club, baSed in robeson County, demonstrated their commitment to community support on February 17, 2024, through a plate sale organized for a local family in need. Although the club chose not to disclose the family’s identity, their actions spoke volumes about their dedication to helping others.

The event featured a mouthwatering spread of barbecue and fixings, drawing in support from across the community. However, the significance of the gathering extended far beyond the culinary delights. It showcased the power of solidarity and compassion in times of adversity.

While financial assistance was undoubtedly crucial for the family facing medical challenges, the emotional support and sense of belonging offered by the Southern Riders Motorcycle Club were equally invaluable. God Is Working Around Us All The Time

e were able to attend the bill glaSS behind The Wall prison ministry event in Orlando on February 24th and extend our visit to Florida to include the opening weekend of Daytona. I was asked by an inmate after the conclusion of the program if I would talk with him and I was happy to do so.

Turns out he has been incarcerated for over 40 years and while he was praying and reading his bible each day he did not feel connected. He was troubled that he felt like God had forsaken him and was not hearing him and he felt separated. I asked what was the nature of his prayers and he said he prayed for his children and grandchildren every day.

I asked how his children and grandchildren were doing. His body posture changed from slumped shoulders to head held high as he told me with some pride they were all doing really well. Now I smiled at him about the same time I saw the light came on in his mind. God had heard and answered and continued to answer his prayers.

In a bit more discussion as our short window of time allowed it became apparent that he was expecting something along the line of Moses and the burning bush. Like many of us we think God will reveal himself to us in some grand manner like this.

boro this year. It is an awesome event. Before lunch a gentlemen originally from Washington state stopped at our booth. After a brief conversation he come to the decision he was in need of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. In booth 525 at the Greensboro Coliseum this gentleman accepted Jesus as his Lord & Savior.

I can tell you with 100% certainty his plan did not include meeting Jesus at the show. His goals were more earthly in enjoying being at a bike show while fellowshipping with other bikers and enjoying the wonderful bikes and vendors at the show.

Jerry Clower used to tell a story of an elderly husband and wife in the famous Ledbetter family. While riding down a country road, on the bench seat in their pickup truck the wife mentioned they used to sit much closer together on their rides. The husband reflected for a brief moment and then said, “ I ain’t moved.”

The Lord is working around us every day in every aspect of our lives. He desires to be close to us and is always in the same place. How close we are to the Lord and how well we see his work around us is 100% dependent on us. We normally do not see what we are not looking for. When we decide to seek Jesus, we will find him and enjoy what only he can provide.

“Seek and you will find.”

Then Joe’s creative side kicked in and his buddy ended up with a black seat with yellow flames. The seat recovery was a success and inspired Joe to offer his services to other riders. “So, I bought a machine off eBay, a portable walking foot machine for $300 and got started with that. I tried different things, you know, using the wrong threads, the wrong settings, but I was having fun and I was learning.” Eventually he put an add out on craigslist and eBay to get re-upholstery jobs. He got a few jobs recovering

seats that he completed as a side gig to his career in Corporate Finance. Necessity is the mother of all inventions, and it wasn’t long before he was contacted about making some saddle bag lid covers. “It all started with a Craigslist ad. This gentleman had some aftermarket saddle bags lids. They were wider, they were different dimensions from the Harley-Davidson ones. So he wanted some lid covers for those. At the time I wasn’t aware this was a thing.” Joe explained. But after some research he found out that other saddle bag lid covers existed, but they were pain to fit to saddlebags and boring with little options other than black and possibly some chrome studs. Joe continued to say, “It was just vinyl. There was no padding, no stitching, no colors, no protection from them and they didn’t fit that well.” Joe took the job with the idea of making a better saddle bag lid cover, by making it fit correctly and adding padding and fleece for protection. Although the first set of ShoreFire saddlebag lid covers was plain, Joe “loved to put flames on everything” and would work out dimensions for future customized patterns. “The function of the product always came first, we wanted it to perform top notch, we wanted it to have the right fit, we didn’t want any wrinkles, we wanted it to stay put, you know. We wanted to make the product a superior product at the beginning and then add the esthetics to it.” Joe explained. Aqua Fuego Rodney’s Softail Deluxe

rodney found a 2008, 105th Anniversary Softail Deluxe to use as his platform for the “California gangster style look” he wanted. The bike was torn down to the frame and Rodney sent the tins off to Ray Spencer at Universal Customs. Rodney supplied Ray his theme idea of Aqua Fuego, fire and water and a photo of a sunset at the beach and told Ray to do his thing. Ray is a master at his art and put together fire orange and a deep blue with some heavy metal flake, added turned gold leaf and pin striping to create this stunning paint job. Seriously, the pictures do no justice to the depth of the paint and the accents that Ray worked into this creation. Rodney wanted the old school look and added 14inch ape hangers with a five inch riser and added a 6 degree rake to the front end to accommodate the 23” mammoth fat spoke wheel. Then he matched the front wheel with an 18” fat spoke rear wheel. Top them off with thin white wall tires and this project is coming together!

Mike Calhoun at Renegade Custom Cycles took care of the engine work for Rodney. They took the 96cu-in and made it into a 110cu-in adding a 577 cam in it and essentially jacking up the horsepower and torque. “It’ll get down and get nasty with ya”, Rodney said. Keeping with the Viclas theme, Rodney added 36in Sampson fishtail exhaust that reach out past the stretched rear fender.

The seat on this Viclas is just as ornate as the rest of the bike. Rodney had the seat hand tooled by Davin Safrin in Indonesia. The beautiful brown leather is fully decorated and the details are just as powerful as the paint job. The seat is topped off with an skull tooled inside an arrowhead design. A nod to Rodneys business, Arrowhead Taxidermy.

But this bike isn’t just a show bike and Rodney puts down miles with it with the Foothills Riding Group that he is a part of. They hit up local bike nights and hit up the backroads and go up through the country. “Everytime I ride this thing, it draws a crowd. I’m very proud of this bike. It was a vision I had and Ray Spencer and Mike Calhoun, big thanks to them” Rodney says, and we believe him, it’s absolutely stunning. No doubt if you see Rodney and Aqua Fuego out and about you need to go check it out. The details of the paint and the seat are amazing and the whole bike is drenched in chrome, just the way we like em!

y time in Daytona was, again this year, cut short because of a four letter word, work. Yeah, work, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t rain too. It is Daytona, ya know. Even on short time Daytona was a blast this year. There is so much to do, so many people to see in so many different places. In fact, there was a ton to things I didn’t get to do, but that always makes for yet another return trip.

This weekend was gonna be a test for my chopper, freshly rebuilt after being torn down to the frame for new paint job.

Daytona Shakedown Run

The 1951 Harley-Davidson Panhead engine started up on a prime and one kick, it’s a hell of a feeling. It was nice enough out there to ride in just my denim jacket, no heavy leathers. I cruised inland on Hwy 44 from my rental house with the Florida air blowing through my hair, as I enjoyed the freedom of choice to ride without a helmet. My first stop when I got into town was The Cabbage Patch to meet up with my Law Tigers buddies Jerry, Chris and Aly. The bike traffic was heavy for the first weekend of the rally and the road became congested as I rolled up to the crossroads where 44 passes The Cackleberry Campground on the left and the Cabbage Patch on the right. Jerry and them were parked at the Cackleberry so I made some passes through there before I found them “right by the ATM machines immediately on the right after I got in the campground”. I hadn’t seen any of these folks since 2023 and it was good to walk around and hang out. The bands were rocking and the shot girls and bartenders were busy keeping everyone refreshed and entertained. The venders were jamming too.

Saturday was bound to be a great day. I hit up a local diner for one of the best breakfasts I had had in a while. A little diner in New Smyrna with an unassuming name “Wake Up Cafe” served up some amazing Argentine influenced American standard breakfast items. Tell ya the truth, the menu had some Spanish on it, I noticed an omelet with bacon and blue cheese crumbles so I ordered it with a cup of coffee. I could understand those ingredients. The Panhead fired up on one kick again and the fishtail pipes sang to the patrons on the patio enjoying breakfast in their loafers. I spent the majority of my day at the Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle races in New Smyrna, (check out that article at the front of the magazine), before I rode out to Destination Daytona to meet up with the

Law Tigers team again. Bout halfway up Hwy 1 to Daytona a got caught in a Florida down pour. I could see it coming and had no choice but to ride right into it. I was almost to my 80 mile gas tank limit and was actively looking for a gas station that came a block or two too late. I got some gas and an ice cold YooHoo while I drip dried. As the rain came down, more and more bikers pulled in under the cover of the gas station til the 30 or so bikes took up all the open space. Realizing that we were gonna be there for a little while, one dude bought a case of beer and started passing them out to the stranded riders and the party was on. Naturally someone turned their stereo on and I was thankful that it was Metallica that came blasting out, that could have gone horribly wrong. The rain eventually gave up and we all hit the road. The fun part about riding a bike with no front fender is that even when it’s done raining, you get rained on. ing off my front tire. Destination Daytona was a zoo. I got to the Law Tigers booth and watched a parade of exotic bikes and some “exotic” people wander by. We were right down from the High Seas Rally set up and some of the bike builders were hanging out. Jerry and I were checking out Xavier Muriel of Providence Cycle Workx contribution to the High Seas Build off with Xavier himself. Nice dude, even walked down and checked out my Panhead and chatted with us about life and motorcycles for near 30 minutes.

One kick got the Pan started again and Jerry and I rode off handlebar to handlebar to hit some spots and hang out. We ended up at The Broken Spoke to meet up with the Hamsters. It was Dave Perewitz birthday party and we were in good company with the likes of John Jessup, Chris & Heather Callen, Dave Perewitz, Mark Hendrix and a ton of other Hamsters talking shit and having a big time. If you don’t know any of those names, you should definitely look em up! As an added bonus, Dave Perewitz agreed to doing a Perewitz Paint Show at The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Custom Bike Show 2025! Jerry and I split from the party ran into Panhead Bob and a local Carolina rider while we were kicking tires and talking motorcycles. When we split from there it was time to head back down A1A to New Smyrna, it was another beautiful night to ride and the fishtails rumbled all the way home. It was near an hour ride, I enjoyed every second.

Sunday was a free day for both Jerry and I and we met up at Sorry Charlies before heading to OB’s in Deland for an Antique Bike Show party. Jerry showed up late and wet. I got a good laugh at him since I had come in from a different direction and stayed dry. It was warm, but there was some weather in the area so we didn’t stick around long at Sorry Charlies. We rode out from under the clouds and the sun was on our backs, it was just what we needed. We blasted along handlebar to handlebar past the moss covered trees and palm trees that lined the road. By this time Jerry had dried out a bit and was about to have the last laugh. At one of the final stoplights before our destination there was a rain created puddle in the right turn lane and some asshat in a Hyundai blasted through it

and nailed me with a tsunami wave of road water! Jerry was rolling laughing, I was wet and cussing. Karma is a bitch! We rolled into OB’s and partied down for quite a while. There were some sweet old bikes, a killer blues band and plenty of cold drinks. When we’d had enough sitting around we rode back to Daytona to make an obligatory stop on Main St. Jerry had some Law Tigers stuff he had to do elsewhere but that made finding parking on Main St a little easier. I rolled the Panhead in between two sport bikes and classed up Main street for a bit. Again, this place was packed for the first weekend. The sidewalk and bars were jammed, but I managed to pop into every one of them and hang out for a few. There were different bands playing different genres up and down the street. I picked a nice spot outside Dirty Harry’s to lean against the light pole and watch the parade. A ton of baggers rolled up the street, every once in a while a chopper rumbled through and the people watching was entertaining. I was traveling back home the next day so I didn’t stay out too late. When I was ready to go, with a large crowd of people watching, the Panhead fired up on one kick again. It had run and started like a champ all weekend, big thanks to Jim Blair at Jim’s Motor Service for rebuilding this vintage machine.

There was a ton of stuff going on starting on Monday afternoon and going through the end of the next weekend. A dozen bike shows, chopper parties, racing, demos and a ton more. One such chopper party had a kickstart challenge that I would have been interested in being in. Oh well, there’s always next time. Daytona is a great rally with world class events and hazy memories to make. I’m counting the days til next year. In the meantime Jerry and I are hosting a Law Tigers / Full Throttle Magazine ride at the OBX rally on Friday April 26. We will take the same path as we did on the Armageddon Ride that I wrote about in the October 2023 issue. Catch us at Outer Banks HD around noon and ride with us.

Mother’s Day. Two children ordered their mother to stay in bed one Mother’s Day morning. As she lay there looking forward to breakfast in bed, the smell of bacon floated up from the kitchen. But after a good long wait she finally went downstairs to investigate. She found them both sitting at the table eating bacon and eggs. “As a surprise for Mother’s Day,” one explained, “we decided to cook our own breakfast.”

During my check-up I asked the Doctor, “Do you think I’ll live a long and healthy life then?” He replied, “I doubt it somehow. Mercury is in Uranus right now.” I said, “I don’t go in for any of that astrology nonsense.” He replied, “Neither do I. My thermometer just broke.”

The wife and I took a long, leisurely ride out to the country and pulled over to fill up our bike’s gas tank and tires... She was surprised to see that the station had a fee to fill the tires and asked me, “Why in the world do they charge for AIR?!” I responded, “Inflation.”

My daughter want’s the new iPhone for her birthday. I told her she will get one as long as she has good grades, does her chores, and follows the house rules. Otherwise, she will get a cheaper phone. It’s my way or the Huawei.

A guy asks a lawyer about his fees. “I charge $50 for three questions”, the lawyer says. “That’s awfully steep, isn’t it?”, the guy asks. “Yes, I suppose so”, the lawyer replies. “Now what’s your final question?”

I was visiting the house of a distant cousin when I saw that he was playing chess with his cat. I said that it had to be

the most intelligent cat ever. My cousin replied, “Absolutely not! She has lost all her matches!”

After Sunday church, the priest would hand us each an orange and a big cookie. A little girl once lied and took two oranges, but the priest told her she mustn’t lie because God is watching. Then, the girl took two cookies and lied about it. When asked why she had done that, she said because she thought that God was only watching oranges.

A climber fell off a cliff, and, as he tumbled down, he caught hold of a small branch. “Help! Is there anybody up there?” he shouted. A majestic voice boomed through the gorge: “I will help you, my son, but first you must have faith in me.” “Yes, yes, I trust you!”, cried the man. “Let go of the branch”, boomed the voice. There was a long pause, and the man shouted up again, “Is there anybody else up there?”

I was in a barbershop when a man and his young son walked in to get a haircut. The man asked the barber to give his son a haircut while he shopped for groceries nearby. The barber finished giving the haircut but there was no sign of the father. An hour passed; two hours passed. We finally asked the son where his father was. The boy shocked us by saying, “That man was not my father. He just told me that if I wanted to get a free haircut at the barbershop, I should come with him.”

A man takes his sick Chihuahua to the veterinarian. They’re immediately taken back to a room. Soon, a Labrador walks in, sniffs the Chihuahua for 10 minutes and leaves. Then a cat comes in, stares at the Chihuahua for 10 minutes and leaves. Finally, the doctor comes in, prescribes some medicine and hands the man a $250 bill. “This must be a mistake,” the man says. “I’ve been here only 20 minutes!” “No mistake,” the doctor says. “It’s $100 for the lab test, $100 for the cat scan and $50 for the medicine.”

It’s the World Series Final, and a man makes his way to his seat right on the front row. He sits down, noticing that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbor if someone will be sitting there. “No”, says the neighbor. “The seat is empty.” “This is incredible”, said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the World Series Final and not use it?” The neighbor says, “Well actually the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This is the first World Series Final we haven’t been to together since we got married.” “Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s terrible… But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend, relative or even a neighbor to take her seat?” The man shakes his head. “No”, he says. “They’re all at the funeral.”

A man stands in line at an ATM in Moscow. After an hour he loses his patience and yells, “Putin is to blame for this I’m going to the Kremlin, and I will get rid of him!” 30 minutes later he’s back in line at the ATM. “Why are you here again?”, asks another waiter. “The line in front of the Kremlin is twice as long as this one.”

A businessman went into the office and found an inexperienced handyman painting the walls. The handyman was wearing two heavy parkas on a hot summer day. Thinking this was a little strange, the businessman asked the handyman why he was wearing the parkas on such a hot day. The handyman showed him the instructions on the can of paint. They read: “For best results, put on two coats.”

My little brother came back from school all motivated because he said he would be following a new diet from that day. We didn’t really give it much thought until my brother really started eating his homework for dinner. When we stopped him and asked why he was doing that, he replied, “I was just trying to see how it tasted because my teacher said that the homework would be a piece of cake for me.”
