iberty Global is the world’s largest international TV and broadband company, with operations in 12 European countries under the consumer brands Virgin Media, Unitymedia, Telenet and UPC. Liberty constantly invests in the infrastructure and digital platforms. Patricia Sjauw Liberty’s VP IT Planning and Analytics talks us through the implementation of a supply chain transformation project that was rolled out in super-fast time at the start of this year whilst she was the VP Global Supply Chain Centre Of Excellence.
What does your role consist of? As VP Global Supply Chain Center of Excellence at Liberty Global, I am responsible in - Strategy Development; - custodians of SC Governance; - Demand and Delivery management of all SC initiatives; -Delivery of cross border and cross function Supply Chain Transformation programs; -SC Master Data operations; -SC Performance reporting and analytics Scope was initially Global but currently focusing European countries due to the recent LiLAC (Latin America & Caribbean) spin-off.

Devoteam has assisted us in delivering the IT Infrastructure of Liberty Global’s Network Material Supply Chain Transformation program. Devoteam offered their expertise in the areas as System Integrator, Technical Delivery lead and Design & Build of the Visibility database. The delivery was not without unexpected challenges but the collaboration spirit with the Liberty Global Business owners was commendable. Due to the close collaboration, the results was less than 1.5% of change requests of total capital investment.
My role is to support Global Logistics (=Steve) and Global Planning (=Willem) in achieving their objectives by providing the key enablers (as mentioned above) I have 12 FTE (2 Directors as DR and 5 FTE reporting to the DR) at central (Schiphol) and 6 countries/regional CoE SPOC as Extended team. We started implementation from mid-2016 intending to deliver Belgium and the Netherlands but were faced by the Joint-Venture decision with Vodafone and the delay of ERP upgrade in Telenet. Implementation in NL is suspended and implementation of Belgium is delayed by 12 months. Thus it means we have to deliver 5 countries all in 2017 instead of 2 countries in 2016 and 3 countries in 2017. This gave a lot of challenges in CoE as practically all available resources in CoE were allocated into this major Supply-lead program. Another complexity is that this program is implemented during the Liberty Global Organization Transformation where many roles were changed and as well as the people in those roles.

Traditionally Engineering community has been performing the planning role, and even the logistics operations in some countries. Supply Chain was not involved nor consulted in all related supply chain process unless there are issues with deliveries or customs. The transformation program is certainly significant and has been brought to fruition in a short period of time. How and why do you think this has been achieved so smoothly? How valuable have strategic vendors been to this process? A collaborative can do spirit is key for success as we were operating in a highly dynamic environment and the strategic vendors are very valuable who already understand the environment we are operating in. Not all tasks can be described in detail during the acquisition phase and thus flexibility from the vendors are extremely important. What challenges does this multi discipline approach offer the supply chain function? What opportunities does it provide?

It is not a big challenge as long as the customer proposition is clear to Supply Chain. We are able to provide different logistics choices and values which will meet customers’ expectations. Are there processes in place to involve key suppliers at an early stage and enhance collaboration and create efficiencies? We have put in place early engagement process in place with internal stakeholders and strategic partners but we should do it more frequently and structurally and extend to other functions. What are your aspirations for supply chain within the business?

Supply Chain should drive more end-to-end value chain and drive the Cost-to-Serve agenda in Liberty Global. Main challenge is the availability and accessibility of financial data at the granularity which we can compare across the group. Please provide a brief insight into your extensive career and how you ended up in your current position. After graduated as a Civil Engineer from the National University of Singapore, I started my career in the Netherlands with Texas Instruments in the Import & Export department setting up a brand new operation as European Logistics Center. After 4 years I went back to Singapore and worked with Logistics Service Providers in
the Chemical and HiTech industries serving customers like Exxon Chemical and Compaq & HP respectively running the day-to-day operations and. In 2000, I returned to the Netherlands and worked as Indoor Sales for SAS Cargo and moved to Samsung Electronics Europe Logistics to drive improvement initiatives in their operations. After 5 years with Samsung, I moved to Life Fitness (Luxury Recreation industry) responsible in projects delivery. Due to worldwide re-organization, I left Life Fitness and moved to a Pharmaceutical company in Leiden running the in-house warehouse, planning and purchasing before joining Liberty Global in September 2010 as Senior Manager SC Projects and with 2 promotions to my current role.
