From the Editor This marks my final edition of the College newsletter, and what a term it has been! It was great to see so many alumni at the Annual College Dinner, and to welcome Will as our new JCR president. Summer term marks the welcoming of a whole new year of alumni into the community, so congratulations to all of you who graduated in June and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours, please stay in touch.

I would also like to congratulate Beth MacDougall who will be taking on my role in September 2017, and wish her the best of luck.

Message from the Principal The final term of the 2016/17 academic year proved to be full of remarkable achievements and success for John Snow College students in a whole range of student development activities and academic work. A flavour of this is reflected in this newsletter. Yet again, John Snow College students shone in the Durham Awards. In future years, this award, and the College award, which become more and more attractive to students, as an additional jewel in their CVs. There is also some sadness attached to the end of this academic year – we see all of our pharmacy students moving to Newcastle University this summer, and Durham won’t have any more intakes of either pharmacy or medical students. We wish our pharmacy students all the best for their new academic journey at Newcastle.

There’s lots to do for the staff of the College over the summer, including planning for next year and beyond, as we start our transition to Durham City. The College office is open, so do phone or pop in if you have any questions. I can confirm that we will have the sole use of Elvet Hill Cottage, Elvet Hill Rd, Durham DH1 3TJ as a Durham City base for the College for academic year 2017/18, as a satellite College Office for those DBUS students whose academic programmes are based in Durham City. Of course, all John Snow students are very welcome to use it.

For those of you who have now graduated from Durham University, I wish you well in the next stage of your career. Keep in touch, and I hope to see you at one of our Alumni events. For those returning in October, have a great summer as you mix holiday with work experience and paid work.

John Snow College John Snow College Student Development Fund After the re-launch of the student development fund this year to make it more accessible to our students, we have been able to award many very deserving students with the funds to complete a variety of activities outside of their studies. All students who wish to partake in activities which will enhance their student experience can apply to the fund for support once a term. Henley Regatta Thanks to the Student Development fund we were able to send a John Snow Women’s crew to Henley this year. The chosen crew consisted of the four rowers Nina Llewellyn (3rd year Medic), Elizabeth Manton (3rd year Pharmacist), Helen Wakefield (2nd year Medic), Ellie Anderson (2nd year Medic), with Abbie Hanson (4th year Pharmacist) as cox.

We finished the race completely exhausted but thrilled as it was the best (and fastest!) we had ever rowed. We felt very privileged to have had the chance to race on such a famous stretch of water. We weren’t expecting to qualify for the next stage of racing, as our competition was strong, consisting of 21 university level crews, and only three other colleges (all from Oxford).

Nevertheless, the wait to find out whether we had qualified or not was still nerve-racking.

Unfortunately, we weren’t quite fast enough to be in the top 16 teams to qualify, but we had achieved our aim of doing the time trial in less than 6 minutes (5:56.2 minutes) so we were still ecstatic. For us, our training had paid off and all of us said we would do it again in a heartbeat.

Working towards Henley Women’s Regatta has been one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. We were very proud to represent John Snow as the only Durham College competing in the event and all of us would like to thank the college for their support. Our crew hopes to compete together again, and John Snow Boat Club will certainly be looking to train crews for more competitive events in the future. See you next year Henley!

JohnSnow Snow College John College JCR Update My year as JCR president is now coming to a close and what a year it has been! I am so pleased to have had another year working with the JCR. The JCR Committee, FREPs, WREPs and Agents have worked so hard to create a year that was fun for everyone, and put on some fantastic events! This year has seen a lot of changes for the JCR due to gearing up towards the

move to Durham City and it’s given us a chance to work together as a team to make the necessary changes and give the JCR new fresh approach to increasing student experience, which has been a very exciting opportunity.

There are too many successes and highlights from the year to mention, but it has been amazing and I am so looking forward to seeing what Will Lewington, our new JCR President can achieve throughout the coming year!

John Snow College End of Year Celebrations After exams are finished our students enjoy a week of fun activities organised by the JCR, aptly named ‘Snow Week’ by this year of fresher's.

Snow Day Snow day was a great success this year full of games, live music, dancing and pizza! In true snow day tradition the sky opened but the rain did not dampen anyone's spirits. Well done to Skye our entertainments officer for pulling together such a fun day enjoyed by all.

24 hour Football, Netball and Basketball For the third year students from John Snow College completed 24 hours of sport for charity. Overall almost £10,000 was raised for MIND and Make a Difference in Tanzania two very well deserving charities. Well done to everyone who took part in this challenging event, and a big thank you to everyone who came down to support it was very much appreciated and kept everyone going.

Summer Ball This year our summer ball took place at the beautiful Wynyard Hall. Ciara, our ball chair transformed the room into a ‘Poseidon's Paradise’ and everyone really enjoyed an evening of lovely food, live music and entertainment. It was the perfect send off for our final year students.

John Snow College John Snow College The Annual College Dinner The Annual College Dinner is a key event in the John Snow College calendar which brings together all members of the College community and a few key people who have supported the College over the year. At the dinner we celebrate the success of the College over the year and award members of the College for their efforts and commitments.

This year, attendees included members from our Junior Common Room, Senior Common Room, College alumni community, College and University staff, College guests and honour guest speaker Pro Vice Chancellor (Colleges and Student Experience), Owen Adams.

This year we were lucky enough to have two spectacular groups to perform on the evening. Our own choir Endeavour Voices and a Durham University choir, Northern Lights both provided entertainment for the evening which was very much enjoyed by all.

John Snow College Summer Congregation 2017 Congratulations to all of our students who graduated in June and welcome to our alumni community, make sure to follow us on social media to keep up to date with events and alumni news.

Graduation dinner On June 29th we hosted our second Graduation dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Durham following the success of last years. This was a lovely occasion, where the graduates celebrated their achievements with their friends and family. We enjoyed fantastic entertainment from DULOG and speeches from two of our former JCR presidents, Chris Howard and Stuart Flegg. Thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a special evening.
