PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • MAIN COMMITTEE 2023/2024 Dear Members, I hope you had a delightful holiday season. This is my first message as the Club’s President, and I am honoured to have the opportunity to undertake this role. In the last quarter, we had several major events taking place, starting with the refresh works done in the Windsor Arms and Mountbatten Bar & Grill, the 41st AGM of the Club held in November and the significant festive events that took place in the past month. This included the big gathering for the Tree Lighting event and carols sung by Brighton College students, Santa’s visit to the Club and our festive programmes over Christmas. Together with the British Chamber of Commerce, we also had the largest ever gathering for the Great British Ball. The new Main Committee is ready to take on the challenges ahead and as part of our process to feature members, we will be introducing Main Committee members in this publication throughout the year. The Club is run by members for members and we welcome all who have an interest to get involved by joining one of the subcommittees. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Stephen Fulton, our past President, for his guidance over the past years. Stephen has agreed to stay for a further year and will become our Honorary Chairman, to help us with some significant projects that we wish to commence in the next two years. I also want to say a big thank you to Adrian Waterton and Paul Hackett who served the committee in the previous year and have stepped down. On behalf of the Main Committee, we send our warmest greetings to everyone celebrating the Lunar New Year and would like to thank you for placing your trust in us. GM’S MESSAGE • CLUB MANAGEMENT Dear Members, Happy New Year! I hope you had a great festive break. The Club has been abuzz with exciting events, including the grandest affair of the year – The Great British Ball. Together with British Chamber of Commerce, we opted to host the ball at The RitzCarlton Hotel this year to accommodate more members, resulting in an impressive turnout of 840 guests. Feedback has been very positive so far, and I sincerely hope that everyone enjoyed themselves. In 2023, the Club showcased numerous highlights, especially the various upgrades and development projects that are now visible to you. Other highlights of the year included visits from professional sports figures, including former England Footballer Carlton Palmer, the HSBC Rugby Sevens Ambassadors team, and England’s Number 1 Squash player, Mohamed Elshorbagy. We also had the chance to welcome Royal Chef McGrady for the King’s Coronation weekend, and we are truly looking forward to hosting more esteemed visitors at the Club this year. The Club has secured two gold awards last year; the Expat Living Reader’s Choice award for Best Social Club and the Gold Winner in the HoneyKids Love Local Awards

Annual General Meeting

The 41st Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday, 23 November at The Elizabeth Suite, where members gathered to receive the Main Committee’s report on general affairs of the Club and to appoint the new Main Committee for 2023/24. The Club extends appreciation to past committee members – Adrian Waterton, Paul Hackett, and Steve Manning for their invaluable time and contributions to the Club during the past financial year. Today, I am in private practice and with more flexible time joined the Finance Committee and subsequently the Main Committee. It gave me a new perspective on the operations and priorities of a member-owned Club.

Meet the Club’s Vice President One of my main interests is involvement in the governance of the Club. When I joined, I realised that the Club really is run by and for the members, and, in some ways, you get out of what you put in. Joining a sub-committee was one way that I could contribute to the Club. I now Chair the Strategy and Development sub-committee and sit on the Main Committee. I’ve found it a great way to make friends and build my network, learnt skills that benefit me in my professional life, and hopefully I’ve been able to give a little back to the Club. It has been hugely rewarding for me and I encourage anyone who is interested to get involved. When I’m not doing that, I enjoy tennis and running. I recently did the Singapore Marathon which was my first full marathon. I think I might have caught the marathon bug. If anyone wants to start a running section, sign me up! I work in PR, and before that, I was a journalist. Last year I took the plunge and set up my own PR agency working with financial and professional services firms. It had been an ambition for a long time and, touch wood, it’s going really well.

our Immediate Past President, for his valuable contributions! Life Membership is the highest possible award to an individual who in the judgement of the Main Committee has significantly supported and further developed the Club. This quarter, we congratulate and recognise Stephen for his significant services to the Club over many years. Stephen joined the Club in 2009 and has been an active advocate for many years. He sat on numerous sub-commitments including Development and Finance. Since 2012, he became a Main Committee member and continued to foster and develop the Club’s agenda. Stephen has been closely associated with many key development projects including the Verandah, Swimming pool, Windsor, and Treetops – where he devoted considerable personal energy and commitment to making sure these projects progressed to completion. Today, these are still key areas of the Club and where members benefit from, while enjoying key revenue generation. Our thanks go to Stephen for his many hours of devotion, and we look forward to having Stephen, his wife and children around the Club for many years to come. Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night Saturday, 28 October 2023 Last Halloween, the Club was transformed into a spooky realm with eerie decorations, music, and games that set the mood for the night. The costume contest stole the spotlight as members showcased their creativity with Disney princesses, cartoon characters, and movie villains, and many more. SUSTAINABILITY SPOTLIGHT ON COMPOSTING an environmentally friendly way to recycle organic kitchen and garden waste with Anne Schot, member of the Club since October, 2017 What is composting and why is it sustainable? Composting is a natural process that turns organic materials into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner. The resulting compost can enhance your soil and the growth of your plants. Composting reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and helps to divert organic waste from landfills. When organic material gets trapped in other garbage at a landfill it begins to decompose without oxygen and creates methane, which is over 20 times more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. Which products can you use? Green (nitrogen-rich) products like fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves and tea bags (remove the staples), crushed eggshells, fresh yard waste, and spent flowers, and brown (carbon-rich) materials like shredded newspaper, small pieces of cardboard and dried leaves. Will composting attract insects? Yes, composting can attract insects and other animals, but it does not have to be a concern. In fact, insects such as ants, beetles, flies, and earthworms, are attracted to compost piles. They help break down organic materials by consuming and digesting them. Earthworms are excellent composters and can significantly improve the quality of your compost. How to manage unwanted animals and odours? To avoid disrupting the composting process and/or producing unwanted odours or animals: •

Do not put any meat, fish, and dairy products in your composter. Also, no oily or greasy food scraps, no diseased or pest-infested plant material, no pet waste, no coal or charcoal ash, and no plastic, metal, glass, synthetic materials or treated wood.

Maintain a good mix of ‘greens’ and ‘browns’ in your compost pile to help regulate the decomposition process and create high-quality compost.

Regularly turning the compost pile can help aerate it and speed up the decomposition process.

Use a compost bin with a secure lid or a tumbler that can help keep out larger animals and reduce the likelihood of pests accessing the compost.

When adding food scraps to your compost pile, bury them beneath a layer of other materials.

Keep your compost moist. Think about the consistency of a wrung-out sponge. If it is too wet, add more dry ‘brown’ materials. Adequate moisture helps microorganisms break down the organic matter.

If possible, place your compost bin in a well-ventilated area. Avoid placing it near windows or air intakes.

By following these tips and managing your compost pile properly, you should be able to enjoy a rich, nutrient-filled compost that is beneficial for your plants and does not disturb you with unpleasant smells or unwanted animals. And, many of the little creatures attracted to your compost are helping to create nutrient-rich soil!

Irresistible Valentine's Day Brownies! Make the perfect dessert this Valentine’s by following Chef Damian’s delicious brownie recipe or engage the children with our step-by-step baking video!

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • •

10 tablespoons (142 grams) of unsalted butter 4 ounces (113 grams) of semi-sweet chocolate chunks 1 cup (200 grams) of granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract ¾ cup (95 grams) of all-purpose flour ¼ cup (25 grams) of unsweetened cocoa powder ¼ teaspoon of fine salt (optional) 1 cup (170 grams) of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions: Preheat oven to 350°F and line an 8-inch square metal tin with parchment paper. Melt chocolate and butter in a microwave-safe bowl, stir until smooth. Add sugar, whisk until combined, and let it cool slightly until barely warm. Whisk in 3 eggs and vanilla extract for a shiny crust on your brownie.

Gently stir in flour, cocoa powder, salt, and chocolate chips. Pour batter into the prepared tin and smooth it out. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. Cool brownies in the tin for 30 minutes before slicing. Serve your brownie squares with cream or ice cream for an indulgent treat!

SHICHIKEN SAKE PROMOTION

Established in the 18th century, Yamanashi Meijo Inc.’s Shichiken is brewed in Hakushu, a town in Hokuto city, which means ‘northern forest’. For almost 300 years, the dedication to maintain tradition and to create sake with the utmost quality is what has allowed the Shichiken brand to withstand the test of time. In order for their journey to continue through the generations to come, “Progression Through Tradition” will be the key focus. The brand name “SHICHIKEN” (七賢) was inspired by a gift given to the Kitahara family by the Meiji Emperor. The Emperor loved sake very much and the Kitahara family was fortunate to host him for a day between his travels. To show his appreciation for the hospitality, the Meiji Emperor gave the Kitahara family a wooden plaque, with mirror image carvings of the seven wise men. This gift is the inspiration behind the SHICHIKEN brand.

CRICKET Section News

Cricket! Why on earth would anyone stand out in the hot Singapore sun for hours on end chasing a little red ball while wearing long trousers, helmets, pads, gloves, etc? Potentially being actively involved in the game for only a few minutes over a stretch of five hours on a Saturday afternoon… I hear you ask? Well, a lot of us in the Cricket section grew up watching, playing and loving the game. Particularly through our teens and into our early twenties. I can probably speak for most involved in social or club cricket when saying that the playing side of things took a backseat in later years as our attention shifted to career, travel, family and life in general, especially for us expats. We finally escaped the vicious cycle of pre-season nets in the dead of winter or the countless dollars spent on bats and equipment that provides false hope for better results. Fast forward ten to twenty years, for many this is act two of our cricketing journey, dusting off the cobweb, thinking have we still got what it takes. Mentally preparing for the same agony of yesteryear only to question ourselves again on why we play this game. Didn’t we learn the first time?

Am I supposed to be talking up cricket in this article? Well honestly cricket is not for everyone. If you don’t like hanging out with like-minded people talking about the glory days or a spectacular moment in the game that defies your age and ability. Attending events like the Mike Gatting evening earlier this year. Hosting a team from the HMS TAMAR while they are onshore in Singapore. Or the banter on the group chat through The Ashes series and the recent World Cup that brings this small multicultural community together. Then the Cricket section is not for you.

However, there is a reason this little section has been around for twenty years. We celebrated that milestone this year by winning two social trophies against SCC and ANZA. Finally touring to Kuala Lumpur after many years. Playing alongside the Women’s Canadian captain - Divya Saxena. To cap off, we are celebrating all these achievements at our end of season awards night in December. Seriously, don’t bother joining the section. You won’t enjoy it.

The Ho Chi Minh Tour 2023 By Paul Davies, Member of the Club since February, 1999

Every year (COVID permitting) for the last 10 years or so, the British Club Football Section has toured twice a year to play the beautiful game outside of the Singapore shores. One tour is typically to one of our go-to venues – Bali or Phuket – where we know we will get good football and good entertainment. The other tour we try and be a little bit more adventurous and so far, have played in Cambodia, Malaysia (Penang), Philippines, Thailand (Bangkok) and Vietnam. The two tours are in March and October.

In October 2023, we visited Ho Chi Minh for the third time – and it was quite a special tour. Not only has Ho Chi Minh changed significantly since our last tour (some good some not so), we had help organising the tour from the Vietfootball Federation (the official amateur Vietnam Football Federation) courtesy of the CMO of the beer brand 333 (Ba Ba Ba) who sponsors Vietfootball in Vietnam. And in addition – through a weekend recce - we found some great restaurants for our dinners and a sports bar for to watch the EPL. As is increasingly the custom, some of the players went early to play an extra game of golf on Thursday and most of the touring party (ranging from 20 to over 60) arrived on the Thursday night/Friday morning, with one straggler turning up only on the Saturday afternoon.

After golf on the Friday, we played a 7-a-side tournament against local opposition but unfortunately a very heavy rainstorm intervened and made the final games virtually unplayable – although a lot of fun. Dinner that night was a superb traditional Vietnamese meal at Hoa Tuc followed by an early night!

Saturday was the big day as the Viefootball federation had organised a 11-a-side game at the Thong Nhat Stadium, the home stadium for both Sài Gòn and Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh who play in the Vietnam League 1. The stadium has a capacity of 15,000 spectators – although we did not quite manage to fill it out! I am not sure the pictures do it justice. The opposition was FC 81+ featuring members from Vietnam Football Federation, national referees, and Match Commissioners. We a full complement of referees and ball boys! Whilst the game finished at 0-0 draw, it was an extremely hard-fought game with chances by both sides to win. We claimed the moral victory as we were done to a bare minimum of players due to illness and injuries during the game.

Football Action

After an end of tour dinner at El Gaucho steak house, we hosted the end of tour awards and retired to watch the EPL at Phatty’s Sports Bar. For those new to the Football Section of the British Club, we have been running a thriving section across all age groups (16 - 67+) playing 5, 7, and 11-a-side football on a regular weekly basis for close to 20 years.

It was with much anticipation that British Club Golf Section members assembled early on Saturday, 25 November for the annual Champion of Champions weekend golf tournament. The event brings together eligible members who won the monthly social games throughout the year for a weekend tournament to crown the yearly order of merit winner. Played over 2 days at Laguna Bintan and Ria Bintan with a wide range of handicaps, the event is a fantastic social gathering played with great friendship, demonstrating the true spirit of golf. At the end of day one, played at Laguna, the field was spread out over a wide range of scores with Nick Price going in overnight at an incredible 10 under handicap and a healthy lead of 5 over the next closest player. Dinner and drinks took place at an atmospheric local restaurant down the river, which necessitated life jackets and an adventurous river trip on a boat - not your usual 19th hole venue. Despite the best efforts of his mates and several adult beverages, Nick confidently started the second day at the magnificent Ria Bintan course. He played in the final group of the day with Steve Buxton, Mike Hughes and Steve Settle, the nearest competitors on the leaderboard with a decent chance to catch the runaway day 1 leader. Not surprisingly, given the spirited evening celebrations, the field scoring averages were not as low as day one, but Nick held on to take the order of merit with a combined stableford score of 85 points. 2nd place went to Mike Hughes on a count back with 72 points, and Steve Buxton in 3rd. As the sun set over a beautiful afternoon in Bintan, a tired group made their way back to Singapore on the ferry and reflected on another great season of golf with the Golf Section. Many thanks to our sponsors for the weekend. Karl Muir, GM Concorde Hotel, and Dennis, our friendly booking agent, for their contributions to the prizes for the golf. The second British Club Padel Rodeo saw the big guns coming out. Showbhik

Kalra was there keen to defend his title, Matt Rowbone, ex-tennis convenor aiming to unseat him, Julian Chesser targeting any smashing opportunity and Anais, our own BC tennis coach and international Padel superstar keen to get back involved in the sport. The popularity of the Rodeo meant that we had 16 people across all 4 courts for 1.5 hours. We played a fast format to 20 points. We did not quite manage to all play with and against everyone, but got very close. In the end, the top men and top ladies played against each other in a Rodeo ‘shoot out’ to see which pair would come out on top. The finals saw Showbhik and Anneetha take on Matt and Anais. In a close-run match, Matt and Anais managed to come out on top. As usual we adjourned to Al Capones for a debrief and chat to put the world to rights. Highly enjoyable and social evening. It’s great to see Tuesday evenings at the Singpadel Jurong courts are now buzzing and almost wholly occupied with BC members and friends who are interested in taking up this sport. We have a standing arrangement to take four courts so do join us on Tuesday evenings!

Section News

Fasten your goggles tight and take a deep breath... it’s time to plunge into the British Club Masters swimming section trip to the Gili Islands… By Joanna Friedhoff, Member of the Club since June, 2020

Last November 17, swimmers from the Masters swimming section undertook a feat like no other, to swim approximately 30km around the three Gili islands north of Lombok in Indonesia. This was no easy swim; it was an ultraopen water swim against the famous Wallace Current. The challenge was for the squad to circumnavigate one island per day. The trip was superbly organised by David Green, our overseas tour coordinator. Safety was always at the forefront with three safety boats following each small group of swimmers. The safety boats had ‘spotters’ who were volunteers to watch for the safety of the swimmers and provide food and water. I joined the British Club Masters section a little over a year ago. I have always loved swimming and swam competitively as a child. Being new to open-water swimming this challenge seemed daunting - yet exciting - when I signed up last May. We undertook extensive training led by our fantastic coach Alain. As a group, we worked hard to improve our technique and to increase our swimming distance in the pool and sea. I swam over 150km in training and we swam an impressive combined distance of 1,838km over the two-month training period. The training was spot on as it pushed us to achieve what we set out to. We were all very well prepared. Before we knew it, the time had come for ‘the big swim’…

DAY 1 Gili Trawangan (11.1km swam in 4 hours 36 minutes). I woke up well before my alarm, fluttery with nerves but also full of enthusiasm. We were staying at a small dive resort on Gili Air where we gathered for breakfast. We helped one another apply copious amounts of sunscreen and prepare our bags. You could feel the anticipation in the air. We boarded our boats to be dropped at our starting point north-west of the island. I was prepared for some ‘tough parts’ but wasn’t expecting them right at the start. The current was strong. It was a challenging first 5km with the waves pounding. The idea was to get the ‘hard part’ done first. The visibility was fantastic; I found moments of calm underwater when looking down at the turtles and fish below me. I did struggle through seasickness, not something I had prepared for. Thankfully for the next 4km the current was in our favour; I felt like I was flying. The final 2km felt long but the sense of achievement at the end was overwhelming. I could do this. One island down, two more to go. Turtle count 7. DAY 2 Gili Meno (7.3km swam in 3 hours 27 minutes). What was meant to be the ‘easy’ island with the shortest distance turned out to be the toughest swim. The first 1km was idyllic; a turtle swam alongside me for a while which was one of those life moments you will never forget. But then the wind really picked up. The next 4km were incredibly rough with a 1.5-2m swell. According to those who had swam before it was the toughest swim yet. Safety was foremost of this event, no risks were taken. The spotters did an excellent job keeping us on track. The safety boats were never more than 200m away. I always felt safe, allowing me to focus on the swim. Once past the southern reef, the final stretch was more akin to a tropical paradise one might expect in the region. Turtle count 4. DAY 3 Gili Air - our home island (9.6km swam in 3 hours 40 minutes). What a difference a day makes. Learning from the previous two days, we had decided to leave earlier to take advantage of lighter winds. It was a wise move. The first 2km were magical swimming alongside beautiful fish and coral. We then faced a challenging section along the southern reef. If I am honest, it was a fight. I was pulled back to the same spot three times; it felt relentless. Time to put on the fins for extra help! Once past the reef the rest of the swim was simply amazing. I felt very at peace in the ocean and almost part mermaid. I finished the swim on an absolute high. Turtle count 4. Total turtle count 15. I swam 28km in 11 hours 43 minutes around the three Gili islands. The distances stated are those recorded on my Garmin sports watch, measured in GPS km. On balance, the swim could indeed have been a lot further, when taking into account the swim against the currents. There were others in the group who swam a lot faster. We had a diverse group of swimmers join the trip ranging from the elite - who flew around the islands and were assigned to their own boat - to others like myself who really had to work hard. We had a mix of ages, from those in their 60s to late teens. The swim was open to those who wanted to swim one island to all three islands, giving the opportunity to all British Club Masters swimming members to participate. 56 JAN/FEB 2024

It was an epic, exhilarating experience and one I feel very fortunate to have completed with such a supportive group of swimmers. Lifelong friendships have been made. My ability to achieve such a feat is a real testament to the section’s quality training led by coach Alain and the Total Swimming team. I have learned with open-water swimming, conditions are impossible to predict and the biggest challenge is getting on with facing the unknown - always with a smile. This challenge was especially significant to me as I dedicated my swim to my niece Isla who suffered a catastrophic stroke shortly after her 11th birthday. Swimming allows a lot of time for reflection. Thinking of Isla’s daily challenges made me push harder. I am delighted to have raised over $10,000 for the Child Brain Injury Trust ‘CBIT UK’. CBIT have been a great support to our family. All the money I raised will go towards continuing CBIT’s fantastic work to assist children like Isla affected by acquired brain injury to improve their quality of life.

MASTERS SWIMMING Masters continues to have a thriving section and currently has grown its membership to around 50 members. Our training sets are created by our Coaches from Total Swimming and are designed to improve both fitness and technique. This year, to kick start our training in January, the Coaches set up the 1000km Team Challenge, we all diligently recorded our training on Strava – and it became quite competitive! 10 swimmers swam over 50km, and 8 swimmers swam an individual total of over 100km. This year, we are very excited to see the return of our Gili’s Swim, this year an incredible 20 swimmers have signed up and are training hard in preparation for the big swim in November. The Gili Swim involves swimming around the 3 islands, Gili T, Gili Meno and Gili Air with the aim to circumnavigate one island per day. The swim challenge is designed to be flexible with some swimmers choosing to take on just 1 island. Some of our more experienced swimmers are taking on the challenge of swimming around all 3 islands, which is around 26km – which is approximately 11 hours of swimming! (Longer if the current is against you). There is quite a buzz as we look forward to an event that we haven’t been able to participate in since 2019.

SQUASH

The Squash Section has been beyond busy since the last article. It’s been a fantastic finish to the year and here are some of the highlights.

British Club returns to the National Squash League C grade For the first time in almost a decade, the British Club returned to elite level squash and fielded a C grade team in the National Squash League, which ran from April to June 2023. With an influx of youth & fresh blood postlockdown, the section had a strong squad from which to pick the three players for each match. There were some striking 3-0 victories against the Hollandse Club, Noble, and Serangoon Gardens CC, while the team suffered close 2-1 defeats to New Pioneers and Singapore Polytechnic. At the end of the season, BC came in third place overall, which is a fantastic achievement, especially after such a long time away from the top tiers of the National Squash League. British Club visits Tanglin Club for the annual War of the Roses friendly While BC typically tries to arrange three or four friendly fixtures each year, in 2023 we only managed to visit Tanglin Club, such was the packed calendar with the re-entry into the National Squash League and the epic squash tour to Bangkok, complete with Vino the unicorn as mascot. While hopes were high for a repeat of last year’s victory, unfortunately Tanglin Club prevailed 14-7, with some solid play and helpful gradings. We look forward to the 2024 fixture at the British Club, and with some vociferous home support we plan to regain the trophy in style! 58 JAN/FEB 2024

Handicap Knock-out tournament To paraphrase Gary Lineker, squash is a simple game – two players hit a ball against a wall and in the end, Charlie Thomas wins the handicap knock out. It was that way for more than a decade until last year when brilliant youngster James Nicholas outran and outfoxed the perennial champion, winning 3-2. The pair were seeded 1 (James) & 2 (Charlie) in this year’s event and lived up to their rankings, ploughing through the field to meet in the final again. Would youth prevail once more? A large crowd watched in wonder as James showed he’s got better and better, this time winning 3-1 after a match of punishing long rallies, incredible touch, and dazzling skills. Many congratulations James. You will be at university next year and maybe, just maybe, someone else can step up.

More COSMO League Heartbreak Double handicap knock-out winner James Nicholas & Charlie Thomas

As we wrote last time, Team BC had an extraordinary start to the Cosmo league, winning 6 from 6 to top the league table at the halfway point. Cosmo is a handicap competition, and handicaps are adjusted after every win or loss, meaning that the more you win, the harder it is to win again. That had an effect in the second half when a succession of narrow losses gradually whittled down our lead. We were on top for 12 of the first 13 weeks but going into the last week we were under pressure to win against one of the other contenders and subject to results elsewhere. Sadly, a long season had taken its toll and, yet again, we went down 2-3 while Tanglin Club won their match to claim the title by a couple of points, with BC in second place for a second straight year. A huge thank you to Oliver Hopkins and Rahul Ghosh who captained the side, and to tournament sponsors City Index.

World #4 Squash player visits The British Club Mohamed El Shorbagy courtside at The British Club

Yes, we said it had been busy. As well as internal and external competitions, our brilliant convenor, Andrew Vine, managed to arrange a visit to the club by none other than Mohamed El Shorbagy, former world #1 and currently #4, and the English #1. El Shorbagy has been a fixture in the top 10 for more than a decade, he is the youngest man ever to 500 tour wins (and one of only 3 ever to achieve that) and is already one of the all-time greats of the game. He ran a clinic on our courts with some informal courtside Q&A, played brief exhibition matches against James and Charlie and then joined the section for a buffet and Q&A on life at the absolute peak of the game we love. It was a brilliant experience for all of us. There is now an annual pro tournament in Singapore and as well as enjoying watching the world’s best compete, we hope we can bring more to the British Club next year and beyond. JAN/FEB 2024 59

TENNIS Section News

Tennis Section Party By Emma Pike Member of the Club since June, 2017 It was a night we’ve all been looking forward to with an amazing international buffet, drinks and music all night. With over 50 people attending the section party, it was deemed a success all round. We presented some of the Club championship trophies and held a lucky draw for a signed framed image from Melbourne Cup jockey Craig Williams, which made the night just that little more special. During the night, Ben Kiggell couldn’t keep Tammy Brown off the dance floor and not because of her moves but because she did the triple this year in winning three out of three events she entered in, Ladies’ Singles, Ladies’ Doubles and the Mixed Doubles. Once all the awards were handed out, we let Leandra and her singing voice loose and danced the night away.

STA Update By Hugh Spencer Member of the Club since June, 2015 A successful interclub doubles season drew to a close in October, with the Men’s B grade team winning a thrilling 2-1, and Men’s C and D grade being competitive week to week. Throughout the season, braving the heat and challenging away fixtures, the tennis section at the British Club acquitted itself and were appreciative to all support flowing down from Scores during home games. The B grade sides victory in a tense final came down to the wire, after the first two lines against Oldham were split our final pairing headed up Mark Woodrow came through with the tense victory, a super tie-break triumph. This season was challenging for all teams, often with fixtures on both Saturdays and Sundays, so full rosters were always needed. Thank you to every STA player for your efforts on behalf of the entire tennis section. Shout out to our victorious Men’s B-Team team members - Mark Woodrow, Matt Rawbone, David Brown, John Wright, Andres Gomez, Christoph Marciano, Bernd Dudel, Loig Pavard, Charlie Thomas, for all their efforts. Add a sport to your child’s schedule this year! Whether you’re looking to improve fitness and motor skill development or have ambitions for your child to pursue sport to the highest level, there’s lots of research to suggest that children benefit best from participating in multiple, diverse sports at a young age - and specialising later in your teens if that’s what you want to focus on.

One sport is good; multiple sports are better! By doing a single sport regularly, you’ll enjoy universal benefits of cardiovascular fitness, endurance, coordination, strength, balance, and physical resilience. The beauty of adding multiple and various sports to a child’s schedule is that the different physical demands and techniques come together to make well-rounded, resilient athletes. There’s also a case for diverse sports in avoiding overuse injuries that you might see from overly repetitive motions required in a single sport. The movements in swimming versus playing Touch Football are very different, for example - yet complementary overall. Focusing on a single sport with little variety also runs the risk of boredom and burnout from even the most talented or promising players, according to the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory for the US Olympic & Paralympic committee. Where we see the most value and benefit is when this holistic mix of sports includes team sports. Elements of competitiveness, communication, collaboration, responsibility, accountability, and cooperation all come into the mix - key skills in preparing children for the challenges of life at school and beyond.

How sports can complement one another All sports require physical movement and decision-making within a set of defined and enforced “rules of the game”. Take for example, these two popular sports combinations that we see expatriate students in Singapore taking up. Football and Rugby share fundamental principles of accuracy, speed, evasion, stamina, kicking, and decision-making. Football requires foot-to-ball coordination while Rugby requires ball-carrying and passing skills. The physical demands of Rugby, with its contact and tackling aspects, can contribute to strength, resilience, and adaptability - attributes that can be advantageous for football players in terms of physical conditioning and injury prevention. Additionally, the agility and evasion skills honed in football can enhance a Rugby player’s ability to navigate the field with finesse. Ultimately, the crossover between Rugby and football can offer athletes a well-rounded skillset, promoting versatility and athleticism.
