WHAT’S THE STORY

Morning Glory?

GASS

Welcome to our monthly(ish) update of what’s going on in and around our cafés and bars. This month is a celebration of ten years of The Breakfast Club.

AMERICAN PIE

Ten years since we opened the doors of our little yellow soho caf and ten years of you lot putting up with us banging on about bacon, eggs and bingo. Turn to page six to see how we celebrated in true BC style.

Bookings for Thanksgiving are now open! Exec chef Matt has put together a menu to be thankful for for just £28 per head. It’s one of our favourite nights of the year and we look forward to welcoming all who wish to share it with us. Go to thebreakfastclubcafes.com/whats-on for more info and how to book.

THE

BREAKFAST CLUB

ON THE ROAD

GET CHRIST MESSY Right old festive knees ups will be held on the 2nd, 9th and 16th and 23rd in Canary Wharf - perfect for your office party, team dinner or a ChristMESSY get together with your pals.

SUMMER 2015, YOU WERE

SPECTACULAR Our festivals team toured the country attending at a whopping FOURTEEN festivals with our bacon trailer in tow. Jen, Olivia and the rest of the squad were up at the crack of dawn each morning, serving up hangover cures to revellers with little to no sleep (hey... we know how to party!)... This lot are seasoned festival pros - we salute you! Find them bringing the party to pop-ups and specials events throughout the winter.

£30 tickets include a party package of a three course dinner, entertainment, DJs, dancing and an after party in our bar Dr Kluger’s Olde Towne Tavern. Go to thebreakfastclubcafes.com/whats-on for more info and how to book. Our Head Barista Dan did us proud at the Union Barista Championships where he won the accolade of Best Espresso! He had to make two perfect espressos, two perfect cappuccinos and two signature drinks whilst doing a 10 minute presentation to two fearsome coffee experts. His signature drink was based on a Peanut punch from the Caribbean which he named the

to Hannah from Hoxton for winning our Fireball Xmas cocktail comp. Hannah blew us away with her “All I want for Xmas is BOOZE” cocktail which tasted like a toffee apple DREAM. Get merry off Hannah’s festive creation from 1st November and she’ll get a share of the profits from every “All I want for Xmas is BOOZE” sold.

We received a whole lotta love last month for our 10th birthday, so we thought it only right to give something back to our customers. We gave each of our front of house staff a golden ticket to award to their favourite customer. Their whole bill was comp’d and they were then invited back for a meal another time. Lovely stuff.

Happy clappy, lovey dovey, proper feel good stuff

Some nice muffins or a sausage always goes down well on the old Instagram.

AGE UK

Taking a snap of a BC brekky or you in one of our cafs? Tag us @TheBrekkyClub and we’ll pick our favourites of the month to win a boozy brunch for them and a mate. Here are this month’s favourites...

You’ve probably heard us shouting about our love for our Age UK Islington members that visit our Angel café fortnightly. We decided to show them our appreciation for sharing their time with us by taking them out for a spot of singing. Oh what a night! Karaoke will never be the same again.

HERE’S OUR TOP FIVE CORKERS: 1. BARRY MANILOW - Copacabana 2. SONNY & CHER - I Got You Babe 3. BILL HALEY - Rock Around The Clock Tonight 4. LIONEL RICHIE - All Night Long 5. BILLY MEDLEY & JENNIFER WARNES - I’ve Had The Time Of My Life

Our cafes are full of talented folks. Our fabulous Frenchie Marie from our Spits café decided to raise awareness of mental health and the great work that Cooltan Arts (supported by our Spits café) do.

COOLTAN WORKSHOP

Movember

Cooltan Arts is a charity run by and for people living with mental health issues and have transformed the lives of many. Marie put on a wallpaper making workshop in The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town for artists at Cooltan. The wallpaper will be put up in public spaces around London to highlight stigma surrounding mental health. Keep your eyes peeled!

@sookfongxoxo

WEERR OW PPO hours Big up our incredible staff for smashing through our target of 1000 hours of volunteering before the year is even out! The enthusiasm of those getting involved and the creativity of those leading their own workshops for the charities close to their hearts makes us feel bloody lucky to be part of such an inspiring squad.

@naomi.hodges

BACK TO SCHOOL Our chefs work bloody hard. For those of them who didn’t grow up in the UK it can be tough learning the lingo in a new country (well done eggs?! How do you explain that?*). So we thought we’d try and help by offering some English lessons. Next time you’re in our London Bridge café visiting our dirty little secret, do say hello to them. Practice makes perfect.

@spitfiredarren

*A little pic of an egg being congratulated next to it?

Next month sees the return of our limited edition Movember special, the ‘Eggs Menadick.’ A right old mouthful of black pudding, mushroom, poached eggs on a toasted English Muffin with saucy hollandaise and served with a big sausage wrapped in bacon. ALL profits from the sale of each Eggs Menadick go to the Movember Foundation. Last year we raised £4,855 - help us raise even more this year!

Opening DUNGENESS

What fun we had on our day trip to Dungeness with Opening Doors London - a fantastic charity who combat the isolation of the older LGBT community through regular social activities and meet ups.

@faz1712

@GoodDayProductions “Do good by doing good” - that’s what we live by. We’ve enjoyed doing good stuff like the above for ages and have finally got around to sharing what we’ve been up to. Follow @GoodDayProductions on Instagram to see our nuggets of niceness.

ANNE HIKING’S

TOP 5 TIPS

FOR MAKING FRIENDS

AT UNIVERSITY

Brighton is a student town. With freshers week last month our beloved Bingo presenter Anne Hiking thought she’d share her top tips on how to make friends when you start uni*.

1. GET THE LOOK

4. DON’T LOSE TRACK

2. FLASH YOUR FUN BITS Everyone loves fun, especially structured fun and there’s lots of that in

5. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

Express your individuality with a snazzy outfit. I love a horse jumper and parrot earrings but why not think outside the box? Maybe try old tupperware as a codpiece? This will set you apart from the crowd and firmly state you’re not afraid to take risks.

games. Yes there’s bingo, quizzes or that one where people eat pies and kick a ball in a net. But why not show off your spontaneous side by introducing a game of I-Spy to a stranger. I once challenged our postman Michael to an egg and spoon race and we’ve been firm friends ever since!

3. START A TREND

Trends are a great way to show you’re hip. I love using Bingo calls wherever I go and they always go down a treat. Like ‘What’s that suspicious residue?, 72’. Now that’s a trend to rival Myspace.

During the next few months you’re going to meet a lot of people - some good, some bad, some sexy. Keep track of who’s who by using a bingo dabber to dab those you like on the back of the neck. That way when you spy a pal, you can sneak up behind them and tap them on the opposite shoulder. They’ll then turn around and say ‘Who was that?’ then you’ll pop up on the other side and say ‘Me!’ – Classic!

It happens to the best of us; you’re chatting to a new friend when you’re mouth runs dry! Fear not. Keep a handy list of interesting facts in your pocket, like – a dolphin always sleeps with one eye open. That way you’ll not only seem smart but the conversation will always flow.

handy tips can actually *beThese applied to any period in your life, like on holiday or starting a new job.

See Anne busting some serious Bingo balls at Boozy Bingo events across our cafs. Go to thebreakfastclubcafes.com/whats-on

OI BRIGHTON STUDENTS, WE GOT YOU! Get 20% off your bill all day, every day and happy hour prices on booze 5-7pm every day - we’re talking cocktails for a fiver and beers from £3. BOOOM.

LGBT SWITCHBOARD There’s something a little bad ass about eating your breakfast for dinner. G’wann, be a rebel and enjoy pancakes and booze for a tenner, every Thursday night from 4pm, only at Brighton Breakfast Club.

We had the pleasure of spending the day at Kew Gardens with our pals at the Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard Older Project this month.

Choose from bacon or berries and either a cocktail, beer or wine to wash the stack down with. AND we’ll be stretching out Happy Hour prices on drinks all night long. Your mum probably wouldn’t be pleased, but we won’t tell if you don’t.

Find out more about the incredible work they do here

BEAT Everybody has a guilty pleasure that they like to indulge in from time. DJ Mark-Ashley Dupé from our Hoxton cafe has asked some of our customers and staff for their ultimate guilty favourites...

BARRY - “Don’t tell my wife but I always wanted to be in the boy band 911! I still listen to ‘Body Shaking’ every morning once she’s left for work!”

DARREN - “My own Songs!”

What’s your hidden talent? Secret Judo skills.

You’ve got the day off. How do you spend it?

Hmmm, in an ideal world I would get on with all the projects I have started but never finished. In reality… have a lie-in , sit in my pjs, watch a load of film trailers and YouTube videos (mainly involving cats) and then think about all the things I haven’t achieved that day.

Who would play you in a film about your life and why? Numbers team in Eggquarters

Noel Fielding because he is a magical and somewhat mythical creature that would make any story a bananas one.

Jack - “’Santa Tell Me’ by Arianna Grande... I listen to it all year round!” CAITLIN - “Bee Gees ‘Saturday Night Fever...

Ooh or maybe Abba ‘Dancing Queen’ be coz I LUV dancing!”

KERRY - “it has to be Miley Cyrus ‘Wrecking ball’ ANONYMOUS - “I like to to listen to ‘your so vain’ by Carly Simon whilst getting ready”

Chris - “It has to be Spice Girls ‘Wannabe’ or Backstreet Boys ‘Everybody’

S Y A W L A ‘ E T A R B E L E C ’ S S E C C SU It’s one of those phrases that has stuck with me from my very early days at The Breakfast Club. We’ve since fine tuned the phrase to ‘Always over celebrate success’. The last ten years have been a journey of one-upmanship trying to outdo ourselves in terms of celebrating. It started off with karaoke for our first birthday and 10

years later, via staff trips to Las Vegas and Cancun, it ended up with our very own two day festival. This August we closed our cafes for a couple of days and put 300 Breakfast Club staff on a fleet of double decker buses to a field near Basingstoke. We most definitely over celebrated our 10th birthday. Despite some knockbacks after a few cheeky requests (Disclosure, it will happen, it will) Tom and Jen (in-house festival curators) managed to put together a stunning line up that included three (yes three) acts that have performed at Glastonbury including The Correspondents and The Cuban Brothers.

OUR HEADLINE ACT? WAIT FOR IT…..

THE VENGABOYS* Nothing says celebration like The Vengaboys because as we all know - they ‘like to party’. I’m not afraid to say it, they were marvelous. Our line up was completed by some of the wonderfully talented musicians from The Breakfast Club. Speaking of talented, I got to live out a dream and sing ‘All night long’ on stage with The Cuban Brothers. I’m willing to bet it was the second best rendition of the song this Summer - Lionel at Glastonbury is a hard act to follow. It rained, my god it poured. But the sun came out when it mattered (it always seems that way). And as the Venga Buses pulled out the morning after the night before we were left to reflect on two days of some of the most fun any of us had ever had. The problem now is how do we follow that… * The Vengaboys have never performed at Worthy farm, but I’m willing to put my reputation on the line and suggest they would be great on The Pyramid Stage.

10 things no one tells you about putting on a festival Tom, one of our festival curators, gives us his top tips on pulling off a party in a rainy field.
