Weather conditions made it difficult to spend much (or more precisely, enough) time painting outdoors, but towards the end of my stay I managed to do some studies of the more exposed north coast with all the drama of the open Atlantic happening.
These paintings were the result of an all too brief stay on the Scillies over Easter this year. The brilliant light over expansive golden sands just captivated me. I work mainly outside responding to what I see – feel, and paint the passage of time and space. The array of islands, strong tree forms, brilliant colours of the changing sea, dynamic rock formations present challenging images that I hope these few paintings reflect. I want to return and experience more of what the Scillies has to offer and gain a greater visual understanding of the islands.
I perhaps owe my love of painting to my mother who taught me how to see nature doing her thing throughout the seasons; I absorbed her love and wealth of knowledge of flowers and nature and felt compelled to record such beauty on canvas. The unhurried and unorganised hedgerows are a daily inspiration, the thrill of each new month introduces another colour to nature’s pallet! The sensuality and depth of colour in oil paint allows me to embrace the subject I choose to paint, I play with the versatile textures during the drying stages, usually with a pallet knife and my hands. I build up layers and manipulate the medium, as well as splashing and dripping thinner layers.

These paintings are the result of my second trip to Tresco. On this occasion, I spent more time on the beaches and among the dunes. The grassy headlands of Rushy Point and Lizard reminded me of great hairy beasts in the earlier Star Wars films, resting their stony heads on the white sands.
For this Autumn exhibition I have included some driftwood Mackerel. I can remember way back in the 1980’s three or four miles west of the Wolf Rock Lighthouse – on a spectacular winter’s morning at first light – catching three hundred stone of shimmering mackerel with the beautiful Islands on the horizon.
The shallow waters around Tresco continue to fascinate me, the constant movement and fluidity of the islands’ waters, both under and above the rippling surface. As the tide comes and goes, it brings the seaweed to life. It is these dense patches of life in the crystal turquoise waters that form a crucial source of inspiration for me. The light is magical in the Scillies, the way it beams through the depths of the clear waters and flickers on the infinite liquid surface. To communicate this I have used expressive, sweeping brush strokes combined with delicate, intricate marks. As thin layers of paint build up, I hope to show the elusive beauty of the Tresco shallows.

Once again, capturing the magic of Tresco and the atmosphere of the Isles of Scilly in general has been exciting: I hope the colour and texture of these paintings show how much I have enjoyed working there. Many studies were made while staying on Tresco, and once back in my studio in Cornwall I referred to the drawings and colour notes to produce sensuous paintings that reflect the essence of this special place.
