A STUDENT RESOURCE GUIDE 2018-2019
Dear Black Emory, Black Star Magazine’s Black Pages Student Resource Guide serves the purpose of bridging African American service industries within the city to the Emory Community. Within this special Black Star issue, you will find plugs to: hair salons/barbers, worship houses, eateries, museums, theaters, and nightlife. It is our intention to inform minoritized Black and Brown Students, especially students who are new to the city, where you can find services that welcome folk who look like you and enjoy the same things you do. Many of us are no stranger to it takes a village to raise a child, and with this Black Star issue we mark many beacons to assist you in nestling into the Black Emory Village. Black Pages is comprised of spaces that normalize everything about you. This directory is offered as a tool to help aid your transition to both the city and our campus community. We invite and encourage you to browse and use this booklet to best serve your needs. Everything is not in this booklet. We missed a lot. [FULL ARTICLE @ www.blackstarmag.com] We are proud to be Black students at Emory because our community is full of people with different ideas, beliefs and purposes united by the love for their melanin and culture. The diversity among us is magical and allows for us to lean on each other to complete a purposeful undergrad experience at a predominantly-white institution. Even though the Class of 2017 has left campus for bigger and better opportunities, a few graduates are giving us their advice to help us make our own path at Emory. Everyone’s definition of success is different, but our interviews of Tamara Mason, Segun Adeagbo, Justin McCarroll, and Ivy Love Kilpatrick remind us that striving is not about the destination but about the journey. Finessing Emory:
1. Don’t play yaself with QTM. Take the class with many friends in different sections because it truly takes a village to pass that s***! 2. At the end of the year, rich kids would throw away their “barely used” TVs, room supplies and school supplies. Finessed flat screens and more. 3. “Get an upperclassman friend if you want Dooley’s and an underclassman friend if you want meal swipes.” 4. “Be on the lookout for free screenings around campus. The film and media department once hosted a special screening for free of ‘Get Out’ before it was released in theaters! Other departments have shown films such as Moonlight and Hidden Figures while still playing theaters as well.” 5.“Check out guest speaker events going on around campus as well. My freshman year, a friend who worked at the DUC office told me about an entrepreneurship talk going on featuring Jermaine Dupri and then two weeks later I got to intern for him!” 6.“Don’t waste your money on Microsoft Office if you purchased a new laptop. Emory students get access to download the newest versions every year through their email.” 7.“Apparently, Emory students have full access to ancestry. com if you need to or are interested in looking up your family history.” 8.“Peavine parking garage is open on weekends for anyone who lives in the city and doesn’t regularly drive a car on campus.” 9.“If you go to the computer lab in the Math and Science Center they have free printing.” 10.Don’t feel pressured by professors to buy those $300 textbooks unless you’re taking a science course or it’s otherwise imperative of you to do so. If you can’t opt out of buying a textbook altogether search for cheaper alternatives through Amazon, CHEGG or through Emory Buy & Sell. Also, e-book rentals are significantly cheaper than hardcover and paperback texts.”
