Betty’s Corner

Welcome to February! Congratulations! You have successfully navigated through the emotional mine field of the major Holidays and have survived relatively unscathed! Now it’s just a short leap past “Single Awareness Day”(Valentines Day for all you partnered folks) and the rest of the year will be smooth sailing over calm Seas! SAD has been just another day of the year for me for the last 30 years or so. I do celebrate, but my observance of the day has morphed. When I was “partnered” there was the thrill of having flowers delivered to my lover’s work, a nice kinda sappy card to hunt for, then a cozy dinner followed by a time of really enjoyable closeness with that special someone. After becoming single, for the first decade or so, I would frantically look for a date on the dreaded 14th of February, sometimes I was successful, sometimes I wasn’t, more often than not the night ended in minor disappointment because my “Valentine for the evening” never materialized into something more. These days I concentrate more on the Grand kids. There is still shopping, but it’s for the coolest Valentine candy that my 6 year old Grandson will enjoy, (oddly enough Ryan doesn’t like Chocolate) something actually age appropriate for my 10 year old Granddaughter, yes I said 10 how time flies! And something memorable for the newest member of the Clan, 6 month old Maggie! It’s a lot easier, cause the kids will be excited no matter what, but still a challenge. I avoid restaurants on Valentines Day for the obvious reasons. First, they’re all way too crowded, and second no matter how well adjusted you may be, a single person sitting alone in a restaurant on Valentines Day surrounded by loving couples should

Betty Desire, The Betty Pages

be listed as a level of Hell in “Dante’s Inferno!” I am very fortunate to have the Grand kids to doddle over, many folks in my Senior Circle aren’t that lucky. Some of us have bitter sweet memories of lost loves that invade our minds every 14th of February. I say bitter sweet because along with the positive wonderful memories of love, there is that tinge of loss that colors the memory with a faint blue haze. Among the mix of emotions that surface particularly hard on this Holiday is a nearly palatable fear among many that “single” may be the relationship status on their Facebook Page for a very long time. It’s such an odd mix this emotional Valentine Stew. So here is Betty’s advice for sledging through Valentines Day if you, like me, are single. Take the time to remember Valentines past. Re-live those happy times when there was that someone in your life, those were awesome moments that must never fade to obscurity. Allow yourself the freedom to tear if need be as you recall the very real loss of those past Loves. There are those in your circle of friends who are partnered. Find a way to assist them in making their Valentines Day special. Babysitting as a gift to a partnered friend might just be what is needed so Mom and Dad, or Mom and Mom, or Dad and Dad can afford that well deserved time alone. Finally, never give up on Love. In my experience Loving those around you is so much easier than not. Kindness has it’s own reward and takes so little energy. They say that when you stop looking for Love you will find it. I have no idea if that is true or not. What I do know is while I wait for that special someone, I am committed to practice caring with everyone who crosses my path. This way if that special someone does show up, I will be well versed in Love, and if not, I will still be well versed in Love. It’s win-win for all involved! Happy February!

February is the month of massacre, I mean, LOVE! So what else should you do but try to murder your loved ones with sugar, err, show your appreciation through sweets? This fudge recipe is light on the cannabis part, so it can be a mellow edible through all the strenuous love fervor.

Surprise Valentine’s Fudge 2 Cups sugar 2/3 cup evaporated milk ONE 12 oz. bag Semisweet chocolate chips 1 7 oz. jar marshmallow cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp. lemon or orange zest ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional) 6 tbsp. Cannabutter

Instructions 1) In a saucepan over high heat combine the Cannabutter, sugar, zest, and evaporated milk, bringing to a slow rolling boil for about 5 minutes. Make sure you stir constantly so as not to burn your delicate ingredients! 2) While you are not busy, line a 9X9 pan with parchment paper. 3) Remove mixture from hear and immediately stir in the chocolate chips, marshmallow cream, vanilla, and optional nuts. Keep stirring until the chocolate is fully melted, about 4-6 minutes. 4) Pour the delectable goop into the 9x9 pan and chill completely. You can either cut into squares for simple fudge blocks, or use a cookie cutter to make specific shapes for more personalized gifts!

YOU’RE INVITED! Queer Youth Project 2016 Community Stakeholders Meeting Help us grow the Queer Youth Project in 2016! Join us and provide input. The Queer Youth Project, a project of Northwest Youth Services, supports vulnerable LGBTQ youth by providing sensitivity trainings to community service providers; referring youth only to pre-screened LGTBQ-friendly or “safe” providers; building relationships with LGTBQ youth living on the street; working together with families through counseling to return LGBTQ youth to safe homes; and providing a safe space for queer youth to just be themselves. These services foster healthy family and community relationships, as well as happy and safe futures for youth. In 2016, the Queer Youth Project will be growing. We will be increasing the amount of support we offer to LGBTQ youth, with a focus on preventing homelessness. We would love to hear how you think the Queer Youth Project could grow in 2016. Please consider joining us for a Community Stakeholders Meeting in Bellingham on February 2nd to discuss what the Queer Youth Project will look like in 2016. Interview With The Fool By Kevin Walder

We recently sat down with The Fool from the Major Arcana of The Tarot for an in depth interview. The Interviewer is designated as “I” and The Fool is designated as “F”. I: I first noticed your dog, is this a service animal or a pet? F: As you will note in looking at various images of myself, he doesn’t always accompany me but is often attempting to alert me to obvious dangers. Other times he seems to just be in a playful mood and being a faithful traveling companion. No matter how you see my dog though he is my only truly faithful companion. He is never critical of my decisions. I: What about the pack you carry on your shoulder? F: I thought I would need a lot of belongings to survive my journey but I soon learned that all that “stuff” was more of a hindrance than a help, so the pack you see today holds only those things I absolutely need to get by.

I: Do you always dress in brightly colored and patterned clothing? F: Sometimes I am depicted wearing nothing at all. My clothing tells a story of my heritage as a storyteller, a sage, a jester. The jester was often able to convey difficult news in a way that would not anger the absolute ruler. I: So tell us more about the Major Arcana and how you fit in. I can’t help but notice you are designated 0, is that significant? F: Actually it is very significant. While all the others in the Major Arcana have stationary, even static positions within the structure the zero gives me the ability to be everywhere and anywhere. I find that I am comfortable with being lost sometimes. Have you ever wandered off and rather hoped you wouldn’t be found? I know that feeling well. I: Do you sometimes feel misunderstood? F: Some people mistake my carefree attitude to indicate mental instability or inability. Nothing could be further from the truth. The creative mind works in mysterious ways which are often misunderstood by their peers. Just because I am not following the traditionally accepted rules doesn’t mean continued on page 7

In The Mix Bridget Adams

Interview With The Fool continued By Kevin Walder

I am less capable than anyone else. I: How did this journey begin for you? F: In the beginning I was as wobbly and uncertain as an infant taking his first steps. Eventually my confidence began to grow until I was certain I could take on any challenge and succeed. I find that confidence often comes from finding you can be secure in your insecurity. I: What would you say is your single most valuable trait? F: Attitude. I am still a child at heart and I maintain that youthful vision and wonder which keeps me grounded. I never spend time obsessing about the past or the future because my place is here and now. I depend on my intuition to direct my spontaneity, and there’s a healthy dose of faith thrown into the mix as well. I: What hurts you? F: People who assume I am less than capable. Some see me as naive, irrational, foolish, and careless and those labels hurt sometimes especially when they fit. I: What makes you proud? F: When people see me as I see myself, joyful, carefree, fearless, optimistic, and confident, that makes me very proud and happy. I: Where will you go from here? F: How do I know and what do I care? My whole purpose and existence is here and now, the future will take care of itself and I dont need to spend a single moment worrying or obsessing over what might be. You should try this for yourself sometime but only if you are truly ready to be free.

It’s award season, Poppets, and for many of us that’s a fabulous time. The glitz and glitter. The clothes. The gorgeous people out looking their most dashing and beautiful. What’s not to love? Except… Except that the Academy Awards nominations are entirely white throughout every single major category this year. Think about that: every nominee, of every gender, in every major category is one race – white. But guess what? The host is black! So it’s okay, right? In other words, the man providing the entertainment is allowed to be a man of color, just not the award winners. Sounds remarkably like the minstrel shows, of you think about it. And let’s get this out of the way, too – I have NO quarrel with Chris Rock. First, he took the gig long before the nominations were announced and second, the man is allowed to cash his paycheck. If he’s comfortable taking the money, I am not about to tell him he’s out of place. However, white people being amused and entertained by a black man – while honoring themselves and no one else? That I have a problem with. And, honestly, you should, too. First, because the LGBTQ community includes people of color. When people of color are left out of anything, it means some of our own are being excluded. Then, because there is overlap here, even for those of us who are not people of color. Because white, cis, straight must not be the only things of value in our society. Yet we are told over and over and over again that they are. That white, straight, and cis are all that matter. Even the times our stories are being told by Hollywood, they are being told too often by white, straight, and cis people. The Dallas Buyers Club and Jared Leto. Transparent and Jeffery Tambor. About Ray and Elle Fanning. The Danish Girl and Eddie Redmayne. And don’t get me started on what happened with Stonewall. Yes, these are brilliant performances by brilliant actors (with the notable exception of Stonewall, which was pretty bad all the way around). They are still white, straight, cis actors telling these stories – because, as we keep seeing, white, straight and cis is what’s considered valuable. I’ve also heard the argument that there aren’t enough transgender actors who are talented enough to play the roles. While I have no definitive proof that this isn’t true, I still call bullshit. You know why? Because it’s the exact same argument that gets used to justify why there are so few people of color in any role of responsibility, from acting to Wall Street. It’s the same argument that gets used when yet another man gets a promotion or a six-figure job and a woman doesn’t. “We hired the best person. We would have loved to have hired someone not this white, straight, cis, man but no one else was as good.” Really? No, not really. News flash – if casting directors only look for established, well-known transgender actors, they aren’t going to find many. We haven’t given them enough roles to become established and well-known. God love Laverne Cox, she can’t play every role out there. We have slammed too many doors in too many faces to expect to be able to reopen them now and have the people we want standing there, waiting. Plus, let’s be honest – movie makers don’t actually want transgender actors (or actors of color, or openly gay, lesbian, or bi actors) in those roles. Because if the people in charge truly wanted those actors, they would find them. In 2014, there was a delightful movie called Boy Meets Girl. Its budget was a pittance. And they found a charming, talented, charismatic, transgender young actress to play the role of a charming, talented, charismatic, transgender young woman. Trust and believe, if the producers of Boy Meets Girl can find Michelle

Hendley, so can major players in Hollywood. It’s also too close to the argument that’s being used to justify all the Oscar nominations being white this year. “Oh, it was such a strong field… We would have loved to have nomination actors of color, but…” I’m sorry, but Idris Elba, Benicio Del Toro, and Samuel L Jackson all had movies out this year. It doesn’t matter what the role is, those men deliver, at the very least, Oscar-nomination worthy performances. Which brings us back to where we started and #Oscarssowhite – and why we should care. It’s the 21st century. White, straight, and cis shouldn’t be the only ones who get to do the talking, or who get the honors. Watch the Oscars, or don’t. Pay attention to the fashion, or don’t. I’m not calling for a boycott, or anything like that. Just don’t be oblivious, and don’t think that’s it’s not your issue. Because it is. It’s an issue – a problem – that belongs to all of us. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you.

A Dozen Films In Six Languages From Eight Countries - A Bibliography of Queer Film

By Lyle Pearson

I‘ve been to seven international film festivals in India, so far, since my return. Here are the queer highlights from the first, the Mumbai International Film Festival, also called MAMI. Hansel Mehta’s ALIGARH, in Hindi. A professor at Aligarh University is arrested and suspended after being stung having sex with an auto-rickshaw driver. A true story, seen from the viewpoint of a journalist who not only befriends the professor, but eventually sees him as a father figure. Before its theatrical release this month, a sex scene will probably be cut by the presently very strict Indian censor. Christian Brad Thomsen’s FASSBINDER -- LIEBEN OHNE ZU FORDEN (FASSBINDER -- TO LOVE WITHOUT DEMANDS). A documentary on the director-actor who chronicled German history from the fall of the Weimar Republic until his last film in 1982, QUERELLE, based on the 1952 Jean Genet novel. (The first Fassbinder film I ever saw was WHITEY (1970), a satirical western shot on old Sergio Leone sets in Spain, his biggest flop. I saw it at its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was never released theatrically and is only now available on DVD.) Another significant gay Fassbinder film is FOX AND HIS FRIENDS (1975), shot partly in Morocco. Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s ANWAR KA AJAB KISSA (THE PAINFUL TALE OF ANWAR), in Hindi, is about a detective, but to its director it’s “not a detective story.” Among the strange cases the detective investigates, a missing husband turns out to be gay, but his wife will not accept this truth.

Nancy Buirski’s BY SIDNEY LUMET, a 110 minute portrait of the director of, among many other films, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, one of the first American films since the early 1930s to feature an openly gay character. Al Pacino played a fictionalized version of the real-life John Wojtowicz, robbing a bank for funds to finance his lover’s sex change. Lorenzo Vigas’ Venezuelan-Mexican DESDE ALLA (FROM AFAR) in Spanish. A 50-year old man pays for the company of young men, but never touches them. One 17-year old happens to be the leader of a criminal gang... Sophie Deraspe’s Canadian LE PROFIL AMINA (THE AMINA PROFILE). Amina, a Syrian-American, launches a blog, A GAY GIRL IN DAMASCUS and is kidnapped. The attempt to free her moves from San Francisco to Washington D.C., Istanbul, Tel Aviv and Beirut, revealing “an unprecedented media and sociological hoax.” Paolo Sorrentino’s YOUTH revolves around Fred (Michael Caine), a retired composer-conductor and Mick (Harvey Keitel), a film director trying to finish a script. Fred’s daughter Lena (Rachel Weisz) accuses him of wrecking his marriage with his “experiments” with homosexuality. Brenda Morel (Jane Fonda), an aging star, refuses the lead in Mick’s now finished script, causing him to hallucinate on all the women he has cast in his films. At MAMI, there was also a panel discussion, The Idea of a Queer Aesthetic, followed by the last film mentioned in the MAMI catalog --Derek Jarman’s BLUE (1993), an 80-minute meditation on the color blue, coupled with a soundtrack spoken by some of his favorite actors, made when he was partially blind and dying from HIV-AIDS.

Suhaas Bhonsle’s KOTI, in Marathi, tells of a son so feminine that his father tries to change his ways. His younger brother, however, sides with the elder, leading to much cross-dressing, a family showdown and the boy becoming a runaway.

And those were the queer and queer-referencing films at only the first film festival that I ended in India this season, where homosexuality remains illegal. In fact, more recently, a petition to legalize homosexual acts has been rejected by the Lok Shaba, or People’s House, India’s lower house of parliament.

Rahul Dahiya’s G - A WANTON HEART, in Hindi. G’s three stories tell of women’s position in the highly policed yet lawless state of Haryana. A woman is accosted in an automobile with ironic results, a girl is caught in a comprising situation on video, a romance ends in murder. In spite of the subject, women’s honor, it has a quite a lot of male flesh in it. One guy, showering with his underwear rolled down as far as it will go, yells in the direction of the audience, “Does anybody have a towel?” Another bathes in a trough by a tubewell, emerging in a rump-covering wet, transparent white towel like the female Zeenat Aman in Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sudaram (TRUTH, GOD AND BEAUTY, 1978). For propriety, he wraps an equally transparent green towel around his bum.

More to come.

Sean S. Baker’s TANGERINE. Two transgender prostitutes, Sin-Dee Rella (Kingana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor) clash on New Year’s Eve in West Hollywood over a reported infidelity with a cisgender (non-transgender). An Armenian cabdriver (Karren Karagulian) fellates Alexandra in a carwash before returning home for Christmas dinner. A motel harbors a bordello. Shot entirely on smartphones, this is an excellent counterpoint to Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL, ending with one transgender loaning the other her wig after the second has suffered a urine attack.

Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman’s ANOMALISA, from the U.S. The writer of THE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and BEING JOHN MALKOVICH is credited as co-director of this adult puppet film. An inspirational speaker, in Cincinnati for a conference, meets and spends the night with the shy Lisa, a telesales agent. The next morning he is called into the office of the male manager of his hotel, who asks Why don’t we sleep together? The hero beats a hasty retreat, walking over the desks of the manager’s secretaries.

Dude, What’s in My Pipe?

With the advent of legal recreational Marijuana in

Washington State Thousands of us who may have rarely partaken of “weed” now have the opportunity to experiment. Thanks to the help of a friend of mine who is co-owner of a Recreational Store, we are going to offer a Dear Abby style column that will give you the opportunity to ask any and all questions you may have about Recreational Marijuana. All you need to do is send your Queries to whatsinmypipe@ gmail.com. There is no such thing as a foolish question, and an informed consumer will make informed choices. Your question is valuable because if you are asking this chances are you are not alone. If we don’t know the answer here at the Betty Pages we will try to find a resource that does. Send in your questions and we can learn together. -Betty

Mad from Marysville asks: A couple of months ago you wrote that “The States Numbers don’t mean shit!” How do you base this argument and substantiate these statements? I am mad because I am now confused as to what do I do to get the best pot available? Dear Mad, I totally understand and feel your frustration. First off let me say that I have been in the marijuana industry for over 20 years. This has given me the opportunity to work with growers and customers to talk and field thousands of opinions and reviews of the flowers we have been blessed to have in our presence. A lot of this time was spent before and after testing became available.

then so are your customers. E-mail inthebettypages@gmail.com - subject line ‘Advertising’ for more information on advertising.

Most recently there was an article published in The Seattle Times. Which confirmed the comments and statements I made in my previous article. The article by Bob Young, is excellently written and titled “Some pot labs in state failed no pot at all, says scientist” This article explains it all from a scientific point and confirms my statement. It also goes on to say that the states testing does not guarantee you that your product is free of contaminants.

If You’re Reading This...

So bottom line you now more than ever need to know and trust your bud tender. An experienced bud tender should be able to steer their clients towards a good and quality product. If nothing else just ask them “Dude what’s in your pipe?” Until next time enjoy your smokes, tokes and jokes. Cheers, The Weed Dude
