Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time. Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Betty’s Corner

In The Mix

This has been an interesting two months for Miss Betty. Last month I let you all know about the “man on a bike” and shortly after I finished delivering the April Betty Pages on April 2, I went to the emergency room at St. Joesph Hospital in Bellingham. I thought I had walking Pneumonia. I figured they would prescribe some antibiotics and send me home with a slap on the wrist. I was wrong. They did an x ray of my chest and found out my lungs were clear, so they did and E.K.G. and a blood test and found out that I had experienced a heart attack. Who knew? They sent a small(and I do mean small) camera up an artery in my right wrist and into my heart to take a look at things, and found an artery that was 95% blocked. I was given 3 options. 1) They could treat me with medications, this would relegate me to just puttering around the house, and wouldn’t “fix” anything. 2) they could try to put in a stint to open up the artery for better blood flow, but because of the position of the blockage it would have to be a perfect shot. Or 3) they could do open heart surgery and with a single bypass fix the blood flow to that area of my heart. I chose the bypass route. I should be good for another 15-20 years! Surgery was the 7th of April and I am now in the process of recovering which could take 12 weeks or so. The heart is fine but it takes awhile for your sternum that they cut through to get to the heart to heal. I have to say I am very impressed with the Cardiac unit at St. Joe’s. The Doctors and nurses are attentive and kind and my surgeon was very understanding of the freaked out 60 year old Drag Queen trying to wrap her brain around having open heart surgery instead of antibiotics. So with your consent dear reader I will bring you along with me as I venture into uncharted waters for me. Cardiac Rehab. I will say that my health has never been better. My blood sugar numbers are stable and lower than they have been in 20 years. This mornings fasting sugar number was 93. My weight has dropped to 305 from 328 and other than little to no energy, and the soreness of my sternum healing I feel great. My daughter Pixie is religiously watching my diet to make sure it is heart healthy (which is no small task). Brandon is helping with errands and the running around I cannot do at this time and many friends have come to the aid of Miss Betty. Thank You to all of you for your love and understanding; I am a blessed person to have all of you in my life. And thank you President Obama for the affordable care act without which I would have had to choose the less expensive treatment with medications that would have fixed nothing and severely limited my quality of life. On to Rehab!

I know we just talked about the Religious Freedom Restoration Acts a couple months ago, Poppets, but there’s still more to say. So let’s say it, okay? Okay! Because back in the mid-90s, the federal RFRA was passed and it was great. I know; that’s the last thing you expected to hear, isn’t it? But the federal law really is great. The federal law prevents women from being forced to take off their hijabs for their driver’s license picture. It allows Native Americans to use otherwise illegal drugs in religious ceremonies. And it allows Jewish teenagers to keep their heads covered during holy season in high schools where other boys aren’t allowed to wear hats. This is all good stuff. Then just this year, Indiana passed its RFRA, and the country exploded. Because Indiana’s RFRA isn’t the same as the federal one. And while the “fix” the governor signed within a few days helps – it’s certainly not the widesweeping “Jim Crow laws of homosexuality” Fox news was talking about when we last visited the topic – the RFRA in place is still dangerous. See, while a business or landlord* can no longer use the RFRA as a defense against discrimination, a pharmacist can still refuse a transitioning person hormones, or to fill someone’s AIDS medication prescription. Also? Good Christians can still bully children and teenagers for being LGBTQ. Or for having LGBTQ parents. Or, you know, looking like they might. Because why let facts get in the way of religion. Here’s the thing, though – Indiana was the first state to create a nationwide uproar, but several other states have RFRA on their books. And still others have what are known as “conscience clauses.” And those can be as scary as any warped RFRA. Conscience clauses allow healthcare providers, hospitals, and even pharmacists to refuse to provide services or fill prescriptions based on moral, ethical, or religious grounds. Generally, this is becoming an issue around birth control and emergency contraception, but don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Transitional hormones. AIDS medications. IVF procedures for lesbian couples. All of those can be denied because the doctor or pharmacist doesn’t think we should have them because he or she doesn’t believe we’re real human beings and equal to them. For “moral, ethical, or religious reasons” of course. 6 states** – Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Tennessee, and New Jersey – all have sweeping conscious clauses on their books. (Note, 6 others have conscious clauses that only deal with contraceptives.) And while, technically, Indiana doesn’t have a conscience clause on its books, thanks to the RFRA and the holey “fix”, it does for all intents and purposes. And this is why I came back here this month. Because while it’s not all about marriage equality, Poppets, it’s also not all about Indiana. Or RFRA. It’s so much bigger than any one of those things. We must stay aware. We must keep fighting. Not for wedding registries and tiered cakes, but for basic human rights and protections. I don’t need anyone to change their religion for us. I just need them to not hurt us while they practice it, or make us practice it, too.

Queer Feminist Radio Ahead: The Pink Mic Comes to KVWV By Stephanie Kountouros

KVWV Bellingham Community Radio is growing and a number of diverse, local shows are being added weekly. The nonprofit station features Pacifica Network programs like “Informativo Pacifica” the “Black Agenda Report” and the feminist program, “The F Word,” and is adding local shows like “Lummi Live, with Freddy Lane” starting May 13. KVWV’s newest addition is “The Pink Mic,” with host, “Jayne Doe – Anonymous Femme” Amanda Hodgins of the band “Fallopia” is the voice behind Jayne Doe. We talked about the show and her take on queerness in Bellingham.

The Betty Pages: Tell me a bit about yourself: I grew up in Kent where I was raised on bands like the Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths, New Order, and Erasure. Suffice it to say, it was a fun houseFallopia’s Jayne Doe hold full of dance parties. My dad actually has significant hearing loss due to listening to music so loud in our living room – we frequently had cops coming to our door at 11PM on school nights. So, I guess the important things about me are that I’m a music lover, a feminist, and an avid tea drinker. What’s your background with feminism/queer issues and music? I did a radio show at my college station for two years where I only played bands with at least one femme member. It was a great time for myself, other womyn, and other queers to hear themselves represented. I also interviewed femme musicians and talked about feminism. That was the start to my experience with feminism and queer issues in music. No, I began when I started to play music. I wanted to be a musician but was not encouraged to do so and never saw myself represented in musical spaces like harder rock. So, my background begins with personal experience as a womyn/femme in music and extends to my first radio show where I got to talk about that experience and the experience of others in the community. Sounds like you’re very passionate. What are you most passionate about in life? I am most passionate about gender issues and getting to dialogue with others about it. I also feel very passionate about lipstick, even though I always get some on my teeth. Every. Time. And what pisses you off? People who don’t know how to use a roundabout. Mornings. And the lack of femmes in music. It seriously pisses me off that I go to a show in Bellingham and there are maybe one or two womyn on the bill…MAYBE. It’s important to see ourselves up there to know that we matter and that, yes, we can make music, too. Tell me about your show, “The Pink Mic” The Pink Mic will be a space for femmes and womyn to hear themselves represented in a community that is otherwise about dudes. I will play local acts and music that contains at least one femme member. The show provides a space for music that is otherwise ignored and not given room since music is still a boys club. I’ll discuss local, Bellingham community issues that pertain to feminist thought, discussion, and musicianship. It will encourage debate, conversation, and interviews in between the music. It will be a haven for local, female/ queer musicians. At least, that’s what I’m hoping! I will welcome ideas and thoughts from other femmes, queers, and womyn in our community because this show is for us. Is there enough local music that is queer/feminist? I intend to play about eighty percent Bellingham bands. I’ll also play some Seattle, Olympia, and Portland acts. My music will feature only local bands that have at least one femme or queer member. So, I’d say the answer is yes. Unfortunately, there aren’t a ton of acts, former or current, that contain more than one femme or queer member. However, this show will seek to inspire that to change! I’ll be keeping my ears out for more and more local music that represents us. Will it include issues and perspectives from trans identified women? That’s why I love the word femme! It seems inclusive to any feminine presenting person. Whether they are gender queer, a trans woman, or a cis woman

What about other people with trans identities and genders? I hope to bring attention to issues related to those who are not cis men or who are not passing as men. Because privilege is attached to those who are cis men or who are passing as men. What topics do you want to cover? The show scene in Bellingham. Bellingham Femme/queer/feminist business owners. Local legislation affecting us (LGBTQ and feminist issues.) Street Harassment in Bellingham, what spaces are safe for us -- dudes and straight people are everywhere! Also, whatever the community wants to talk about! I want to hear from them. What do you think about the Bellingham queer community? I’ve only been in Bellingham about a year now. So, I don’t have the experience to say what it is or isn’t. I can say that, at first, people were very stand-offish. Understandably so, as this is a community that has been continually infiltrated. Continually infiltrated? It’s obvious that, worldwide, LGBTQ communities have been continuously invaded by straight people. I mean, in Bellingham specifically you see it in Rumors). My good friend from Seattle was talking to me about a notable gay bar in Seattle. He gets furious when straight couples come in there to get wasted and gawk at his community. I mean, you get everywhere else. Why do you need this space? And when you are in it, why take up so much of it? So, when I showed up, it was understandable no one wanted to welcome me with open arms. For all anyone else knew, I was just another person unintentionally taking over. Some of my lesbian friends have talked about having a “Take Back the Bar” night! One day we’ll go in and cut in on all the heterosexual dance couples. What’s your dream for the Bellingham queer community? My dream for the Bellingham queer community, and every community, is for our voices and faces to be more represented in every space. I dream of the day that I see femmes on stage just as often as I see cis men. That’s what I dream of! We need more of us on stage and in the crowd. How can community radio be good for LGBTQ communities in Bellingham? Your voices can be heard! Your issues can be discussed. Your music can be played. I think it’s a great platform for us. Finish this sentence: Bellingham would be perfect if: …womyn and queers were on stage just as much as the boys! “The Pink Mic” debuts this month on KVWV FM. The live show airs Tuesdays from 7-9 PM on http://kvwv.org. For more information or to be involved with the show, contact amandajhodgins@hotmail.com

Whatever happened to YKINMKBYKIOK (Your Kink is not my kink, but your kink is ok)? So, following the logic of the people above, am I not “really” kinky because I don’t like leather restraints? Am I not “really” kinky because I don’t like stingy impact? Am I not “really” kinky because I’m a brat and I serve my Owner by being the most assertive, kick ass submissive I can be instead of being a “twue” submissive? (More on that later.) WHO ARE ANY OF US TO LABEL OTHERS? IF THEY FEEL THAT THEY ARE KINKY, GUESS WHAT? THEY REALLY ARE KINKY! Let’s think about this a little more. Because logic is fun, right? What if we switched around some of the words? Instead of “He’s not really kinky because he’s not a masochist,” let’s pretend someone said, “He’s not really gay because he wears flannel shirts.” Do we see the lunacy in that statement? Instead of “She’s not really kinky because she doesn’t do D/s,” let’s pretend someone said, “She’s not really straight because she loves pictures of naked women.” Instead of “They’re not really kinky because they’re monogamous,” let’s pretend someone said, “They’re not really a couple because they’re not married.” (Which has actually been said to me, but is obviously a flawed statement.) Creating “If, then” statements based upon our own perceptions and applying them to the experiences of others makes people look like judgmental jerks.

We’re all here to be accepted; to feel less marginalized by at least a segment of society; to feel safe in expressing who we are right now to the people around us without constant fear of judgment and reprisal? I mean, maybe that’s just me. But it seems to be a common sentiment… That person being judged as not really kinky because she’s not a masochist? What if she just doesn’t like to play hard in public? Or maybe she doesn’t trust the person she’s playing with enough to go that far. Or maybe she’s new and she’s scared to say how much she likes the pain because of cognitive dissonance. And so what if she isn’t. She can still be kinky. What about that person who isn’t D/s enough to be “really kinky”? Maybe he has trust issues stemming from childhood trauma and he can’t cede control to someone else. Maybe he has an intensely D/s leaning, but hasn’t found the right someone(s) to share it with yet. And so what if he doesn’t. He can still be kinky. And that couple that’s too monogamous to be “really” kinky…There’s an overlap between the poly and kinky community, but they surely aren’t one and the same, friends. Doesn’t matter. If they think they’re kinky—they are. As for making assumptions about people based on what we see, it’s just…should I say foolish or dangerous? I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I know that my kinks are not most people’s kinks. I know people get freaked out by the things I like to do and have done to me. Instead of hearing “She’s not really kinky…”, I’d be hearing “That girl is crazy.” But guess what: I think I’m kinky and that’s all that matters. :) And the people on one end of the spectrum are just as kinky as the people on the other end...they’re just different kinds of kinky. The only person that gets to pick your labels and identifiers is you. If you think you’re kinky that’s all that really matters. And the only person that gets to pick theirs is them. We can think what we want in our heads and acknowledge that someone else is a different kind of kinky than we are. But let’s not diminish someone else’s kinky light because it’s not the same shape, color, brightness, or whatever as our own. Let all the kinky flames shine just the way they are.

Save our City: Zombies vs. Survivors IV is coming on Saturday, May 30th! In the time honored Black Drop tradition of special events that turn into spectacles, “Save our City” is a giant downtown wide game of water balloon tag with a twist: Participants start out as “survivors” who hunt “zombies” with water balloons, and become “infected” if they are tagged. Players also can form teams to complete objectives and compete against other teams to be the first to finish the course. Free zombie makeup is provided for those who want it, and participants are encouraged to come in costume. This game is family friendly, hilariously fun, and free for all who want to play. A sense of humor and a willingness to be silly is required. Last year’s Save our City event saw 290 registered participants take over the downtown area for water balloon mayhem and zombie hysteria. Just like last year, we are once again a CITY SPONSORED event, backed by the Bellingham Department of Parks and Recreation. Last year, 20 local businesses donated merchandise and support, to allow us to offer bigger and better prizes! Prizes are awarded for First, Second and Third place teams, as well as categories like “last human standing” and “best zombie” and “best zombie shuffle” or whatever we think up for this year. This event doesn’t go off without our dedicated team of volunteers, so if you’re interested in helping the Black Drop out with the best event of the summer and also earning some free coffee and swag, email the Black Drop with the subject “Zombie Volunteer” and be sure to follow the event on our Facebook page!

Dude, What’s in My Pipe?

With the advent of legal recreational Marijuana in

Washington State Thousands of us who may have rarely partaken of “weed” now have the opportunity to experiment. Thanks to the help of a friend of mine who is co-owner of a Recreational Store, we are going to offer a Dear Abby style column that will give you the opportunity to ask any and all questions you may have about Recreational Marijuana. All you need to do is send your Queries to whatsinmypipe@ gmail.com. There is no such thing as a foolish question, and an informed consumer will make informed choices. Your question is valuable because if you are asking this chances are you are not alone. If we don’t know the answer here at the Betty Pages we will try to find a resource that does. Send in your questions and we can learn together. -Betty

Nervous in Nooksack asks: “I have issues with anxiety and have had problems smoking pot but not always. I was told that there is a difference between sativa and indica what are the differences and what would you recommend?” Dear Nervous, Yes, there is a difference between Indica and Sativa. Indica is a more relaxed, mellow high; funny, laughing, giggling, “in the couch”. Sativa is a more active, cerebral, conversational high. However, a Sativa may cause some to go too deep into their own thoughts. I would recommend you make your choice depending on how you wish to feel during your high. Anxiety is a terrible thing to deal with when you are trying to relax and enjoy the moment. Unfortunately it is not usually caused by Marijuana, only exasperated by it. You see it is important that you are in the right state of mind before adding something that can definitely alter your state of mind. I would recommend pausing for a moment and look back and see if there is a specific trigger to your nervousness. If you are already nervous, stressed or tired the Marijuana may magnify these feelings rather than relieving them. 1st Closely monitor your intake. You may be overdoing it. Take one or two tokes and take a break for fifteen or twenty minutes. Ease into a stone rather than jumping into one. 2nd Set the mood and find a good experienced fun friend to help you stay in a positive mood. Play some music, find a happy spot to enjoy yourself and remember to breathe. Marijuana has never killed anyone and your stone will pass in time. 3rd Stay active, if you feel the nervousness setting in get up and change what you are doing. Get away from the things that are troubling you and be free. By trying a couple of these mood and environmental tips, I hope that one day you can leave your nervousness behind and flow into a nice good stone. Until next time Enjoy the smokes tokes and jokes. Cheers, The Weed Dude

Letter To the Editor Dear Editor: It seems a lot of Christians in Indiana (and elsewhere) don’t like Gay marriage and would like to show their disdain for these unions by passing laws that allow discrimination against Gays. I’d like to remind those Christians what Jesus, their Savior and man of peace, said: “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”. Christians and other religious groups have a constitutional right to worship inside their church or temple or ashram. But when they step out onto the sidewalk, they must abide by the laws of their nation and, so to speak, “honor Caesar”! I am sure their God will forgive them. Jesus ostensibly said as much. - J. Kichi

Green Leaf, a recreational cannabis store, located on Meridian St., brings in the tourist boom and the local leaf lovers alike with a vendor fair, held on “national potsmoke day,” 4/20. As one half of the store was dedicated to producers, processors, glass blowers, oil makers, and cannabis chocolatiers, visitors could peruse the products, tour the wares, and meet their local growers all in one day, one location. “This is really an information session,” said Adrian Reinstein, Administrator for Green Leaf Recreational. “It’s a way for consumers to connect to their growers, and learn what it takes. What the whole process is from seed to sale.” The hub-bub was non-stop. Crescendo Chocolates, a local candy making company offering infused edibles, doled out free samples so customers could taste of their product (sans the pot). “It’s a chance to communicate with customers,” said Bob Ridgely, owner of Crescendo Chocolates. “It’s a good time because we can all get together [other producers and processors of the cannabis Industry].” Happy Valley, a grower and concentrate farm located a few miles up the Guide Meridian from Green Leaf, handed out bumper stickers and free sniffs of their latest and greatest flowery bud. All throughout the store visitors toured the farms, asking questions, picking up pamphlets and eating a twinkie or two (provided at no cost to the cannabis friendly fan-fare.) Though many of the vendors were local, the line-up wasn’t limited to just Whatcom County farms. Life Gardens a producer from Ellensberg made the trek, along with Craft Elixirs, a Seattle based liquid-edible company. “It really was quite worth it, meeting other vendors and seeing customers enjoying our products,” said a representative from Craft Elixirs. “Getting to inform about, not just our product, but the industry as well,” Beginning in the 1970’s, with high school kids looking to blaze after their long school day, 4:20 became an underground movement signifying a collective doobie be lit, puffed and passed. As stoner culture morphed and grew the 4:20 time became less about a place, less about the dial of a clock, and more about “a state of mind”, says High Times magazine in their article History of 420. Whether a celebration of cannabis culture stays true to it’s 4:20pm roots or grows into another place, another time, and another state of mind, the budding industry is sure to offer up a party for whatever phase of haze a stoner could ask for. Green Leaf plans to do similar events in the future, including Cannabis Workshops in which consumers can take an educational approach to their bud buying. For more information please contact Green Leaf at (360)526-2198.

In And Out of India: A Bibliography of Queer Film By Lyle Pearson

w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m

w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

A few months ago, I loaned a new book, M. Madhava Prasad's CINE-POLITICS: FILM STARS AND POLITICAL EXISTENCE IN SOUTH INDIA (Hyderabad, Black Swan Pvt Ltd., 2014) to my friend Theodore Bhaskaran, a Tamil film historian. Two weeks later, I phoned Theo, asking if he had read the book. "There are two kinds of film criticism in India," he said, "the academic and the non-academic. The academic follows the American kind. This book follows the academic kind," almost as if he wanted to return it to me one the spot, over the phone. I thought, maybe that's why my copy of Prasad's earlier book, THE IDEOLOGY OF THE HINDI FILM: A HISTORICAL RECONSTRUCTION (Delhi, Oxford University Press, 1998) still sits at home in Bellingham basically unread. A few days later I also discovered I had two books by a self-called Indian film "analyst," Baradwaj Rangan, CONVERSATIONS WITH MANI RATNAM (New Delhi, Viking/Penguin, 2012) and DISPATCHES FROM THE WALL CORNER: A JOURNEY THROUGH INDIAN CINEMA (Chennai, Tranquebar, 2014). So I phoned Theo again and asked, "What do you think of Baradwaj Rangan?" "He's good," opined Theo. I agree: consequently, here for readers of THE BETTY PAGES are some informal notes by Rangan on queer and near queer films that he has seen in and outside India in the last two years. Those that he saw outside India were at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival. Let's begin with 2014, considered the 100th anniversary of Indian film, for which the four vignette BOMBAY TALKIES was created by four directors. The first story is queer and the third has a queer subtext. To Rangan: "In the first short, Karan Johar pays tribute to ... the love triangle ...But with a twist. Avinash (Saquib Saleem) is gay [and] may just have found a daddy-substitute in Dev." (Randeep Hooda) Avinash asks, "'Do you want to come out?' " but it doesn't "ring true ,,, These beats need to be lingered on ... But I liked the streak of selfishness that makes Avinash reveal things to" Dev's wife (Rani Mukerji, and) a kiss that begins as a light peck on the lips and quickly progresses ... as if compensating for a lifetime of repression ... "The third short, by Zoya Akhtar, was for me the best ... touching declarations from children about what they want to become ... Vicky (the marvelous Naman Jain) dreams of becoming a dancer." But his father "forces him to play football... Akhtar infuses her story with a cheerful strain of subversion:" "'Bollywood has all the answers,'" Avanish remarked earlier. "The short, mercifully, never gets into the question of Vicky's sexuality, and his ... sister merely smiles when she sees him all dolled up in her clothes and their mother's makeup ... When she tells him he'll end up acting like a girl, he asks her if that's a problem. His innocence is heartbreaking." And at Berlin, "The film that opened the festival was Isabel Coixet’s NOBODY WANTS THE NIGHT, featuring Juliette Binoche as Josephine Peary. Yes, that Peary. Her husband has taken off to ... the North Pole, and she wants to be there, near him And so she embarks on a journey as perilous as his. "For a while, the film comes off like an all-female answer to Herzog’s FITZCARRALDO.. Here, too, we have a Westerner in a strange world, filled with the stubborn determination to achieve the impossible. “We’ll make it,” says Josephine ... Had the winds not been howling around her so, we might have heard the grinding of clenched teeth. "In a direct echo of FITZCARALDO, whose protagonist wanted to bring opera to a city in the Peruvian rainforest, we have a scene where Josephine invites Alaka, an Inuit and the only other person around, into her living quarters and

gives her a taste of Western culture. Red wine. Cutlery. Opera on the record player. "And slowly we realize that this most exterior of films has taken a sharp Uturn and turned its attention to the interiority of these two women. NOBODY WANTS THE NIGHT, finally, is a hi-toned “buddy movie” where two very different people circle each other warily before becoming friends or more. Coixet keeps things interesting by reducing these women to near-archetypes ... Josephine, on the other hand, shows what a “woman” would do when faced with someone in a condition that needs its own kind of attention. "The only 'man' with a somewhat significant role is Gabriel Byrne, who plays a guide named Bram. Early on, Josephine asks him why he keeps coming back to these godforsaken places. He says, ponderously, that it’s the purity, that these places are purer than the sea, the skies. “It takes me away from human beings and brings me close to nothingness.” We are left with the impulse to giggle. "NOBODY WANTS THE NIGHT is an odd film that drifts all over the place and never really locates its centre. But even when it veers to the brink of triteness ... we can’t take our eyes off Josephine and Alaka. Binoche gives a typically guarded performance – at times, she appears colder than her surroundings. And the remarkable Rinko Kikuchi, as Alaka, suffuses the film with much-needed warmth. "Art-house success is all very good, but it’s always nice when your movie makes a little money. You can almost hear the American trailer. “They came from different worlds. They spoke different languages. But they found they weren’t all that different after all.” The film could be titled DANCES WITH HUSKIES." On February 14, Rangan wrote: "After a lot of earnest, well-intentioned, even well-made films, there was still the sense that there has been nothing yet that really shook you, shocked you. That probably explained the crowds at the screening of the new Peter Greenaway film, EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO ... Had Hollywood laid its hands on this material, it would have resulted in an ultraconventional, Oscar-baiting biopic. In 1931 the Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein travels to Mexico to make a movie. There, he falls in love not just with another culture, but another man, a married one. Cue the violins. But Oscar’s embrace is sure to avoid Greenaway. The film is characteristically his – outré, all serrated edges, and guaranteed to upset, even outrage, the more conservative members of the Academy. Cue the smelling salts. "I wondered how much richer your average biopic – THE KING'S SPEECH, or THE IMITATION GAME – would be if helmed by a director with genuine vision, like Greenaway. He’s incapable of cliché – or at least, they’re his clichés, his very own. Throughout EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO, there are colour changes, split screens, footage spliced in from elsewhere, and even telephone conversations are imagined anew – while in the shower, while writhing on a marvelously ornate floor. Amidst a festival lineup that perhaps had a little too much decorum, this was a much-needed assault on the senses ... At one point, Eisenstein worries about his art. He says, “I’m not sure filmmakers will be remembered.” Greenaway needn’t be worried... "Justin Kelly's I AM MICHAEL" opens with Michael (James Franco) "advising a gay teen that gayness doesn't exist. 'If you are a moral person, then you will choose heterosexuality in order to be with God.'" Then, ten years earlier, the now blond Michael wakes "up next to his boyfriend Bennett (Zachary Quinto)," soon institutes "a gay menage a trois [and] makes a documentary about queer youth in America. "I AM MICHAEL is a coming-in story, the queer answer to Graham Greene's THE END OF THE AFFAIR... The quiet strength of I AM MICHAEL comes from the understanding that people don't always have a logical reason for doing the things they do, [as] we get to understand the confusion brewing inside

The Lovers Kevin Walder

Michael. The more he denouces his earlier 'lifestyle,' the more we feel he's trying to convince himself more than anybody else... "I haven’t read FiFTY SHADES OF GREY, but like everyone else on the planet, I have heard about it – so imagine my surprise when, instead of the taboo-busting S&M sex I thought was in store in the movie version (directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson), I sat through a pretty tame update of a Gothic romance. Yes, tame. There is a lot of sex, especially when seen on an IMAX screen (there was literally a stampede to get in) – but nothing very disturbing, [in festivals] where sexual taboos have regularly been busted by the likes of LAST TANGO IN PARIS, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, INTIMACY, NINE SONGS, BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR. The eroticism in those films is coupled with a powerful self-destructiveness, and it’s frightening. It makes the stomach churn. This one’s content to position itself as a big Valentine’s Day release. Savour the pun in that last word; it’s the only lightness in sight. "Anastasia (Dakota Johnson, who’s really good) is the beauty; Christian (Jamie Dornan) is the beast. Or Anastasia is a pretty woman; Christian is Richard Gere with issues. Or Anastasia is Jane Eyre; Christian is the brooding, Byronic Mr. Rochester ... She wants a ring on her finger. He’d rather see her hands in a knot. He’s a “dominant,” and he sees her as a “submissive.” This, apparently, is what passes for a romantic bestseller these days. If Austen had written PRIDE AND PREJUDICE in this era, she may have had to device a happy ending where Mr. Darcy declares his long-suppressed love for Elizabeth Bennet by blindfolding her with a lace handkerchief and smiting her bottom with a riding crop ...I was startled by the anticlimax – and then I realized that this is one of those affairs that’s going to be carried on over two more installments. Talk about a tease.” But even in Berlin, "there are films you miss." One of Rangan's regrets is the documentary, Christian Braad Thomsen's FASSBINDER: TO LOVE WITHOUT DEMANDS, "memories of [Thomsen's] friend Rainer W Fassbinder, based on a long conversation held in a hotel room one late afternoon in the 1970s." Back in Chennai, later, in Shankar's I (qv), "In an amusing scene, [Vikram] participates in a body-building championship and dances to ‘Azeem-o-shaan shahenshah’ (Great Prideful King of Kings), his ‘choreography’ made up entirely of poses that show off his muscles. There’s more showing off, courtesy the technical departments, in the ‘Mersalaayiten’ music video — the song’s pep is complemented by a series of wellimagined, well-staged visual effects," but Rangan otherwise does not like the film. Rangan is not always right, or wrong. Of a newer film, M. Muthaiah's KOMBAN (The name of the hero), he writes, "Why do the men in these rural dramas bother with veshtis [lungis, wrapping around the lower body]? ...these newer films ... have no real use for their rural settings ... except, we wouldn't see so much underwear. The goons who end up flying into orbit, do so with their legs splayed, and with their veshtis hoicked up we seem to be looking at endless product placement for the kind of underwear we might call 'rustic bermudas.' "The story is about Komban's prickly relationship with his father-in-law -- and had the film concentrated on these emotional beats, we may have had something." But the villains are "just there to give Komban excuses to flex his muscles and send more goons into orbit, reducing them to the deep-south version of lingerie models, the dust-caked streets their catwalk. Here's s suggestion for a brand name: Veecharuvaa's [Killer Axe's] Secret." And so, like Shankar's I, I did see Muthaiah's KOMBAN. But I was disappointed. There really wasn't that much underwear.

The Lovers Card is one of the Major Arcana and when these appear in a reading they tend to carry a greater punch, a bit more weight than the Minor Arcana cards. When the Lovers Card shows up in a reading I see it as representing choices coming up. As with all the cards there are various messages to be derived depending on the question being addressed. The Lovers Card may be a nudge to make a decision or it could be advice to slow down and make sure one has all the pertinent information upon which to base a sound decision. In some older decks this card is called “The Two Paths” or “The Twin Paths” and thus its predominate meaning of Choices. The Lovers Card may also speak of love and commitment, attachment and relationships. In most decks there are three figures included which indicates the need for and availability of guidance in the process of making wise choices. This card speaks to us of the things we hold most dear in our lives and of making good choices to preserve them. The Lovers Card reminds us to be grateful and appreciative of those who share our lives and commitments and asks us to choose how we will enhance these relationships in our lives. We all face many choices daily and some can be life changing while others may be as simple as a choice of outfit. Contemplating our choices and how they may affect our future is worthy of our attention. As I often point out, the choices we make about those we allow into our most intimate lives are the most important ones we make. Products can be returned, a bad buying decision can be corrected, but the choices about those with whom we share our dreams and passions are much more difficult to move past. This card represents commitment and attachment as well as relationships in our lives. Finding the balance is important and requires us to choose what really matters in our lives. Giving too much attention to a less important decision could be distracting us from the big picture and the important decisions in our lives. Sometimes we can allow ourselves to become so confined by insignificant decisions that we fail to take the appropriate action on bigger decisions in our lives. This is where defining our question becomes most important. When I see The Lovers card appear in a reading it tells me that the querent needs to focus on the important choices before him/her at the moment. We are each responsible for the choices we make and this card reminds us to embrace the process and make informed decisions and choices in our lives. The Lovers card can also speak about a relationship which needs attention and nurturing. If the reading is centered on a relationship question the appearance of The Lovers will be a power boost to all the cards around it and indicate that we are, in fact, on the right track. What commitment commands the most attention in our lives? What attachment demands too much of our attention? How will we choose what stays and what goes?
