About our Contributors... Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time. Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Queer Film Historian Lyle Pearson has published in Film Quarterly Sight and Sound, International Film Guide, Filmfare, Youth Times, and Manshots. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University.

Naomi graduated Whatcom Community College with an Associates in Visual Communications - Graphic Design but prefers more hands on tinkering & random projects (of which she always has many still to finish).

What an action packed November! If you are reading this prior to the 5th of the Month I want you to do yourself and me a favor. If you are registered to vote and have not filled out and turned in your ballot put down the Betty Pages fill out your Ballot and turn it in. I care deeply who and what you vote for I do not want you to vote against your own interests, but I care even more that you vote. Apathy at the voting booth leads people into powerful decision making positions local, State and Federal that have other agenda’s than whats best for the common citizen. Washington State and Oregon have made it easier and less burdensome and painful than any other State in the Union to cast your Ballot. Your voting isn’t limited to a single day. You do not have to wait in line. You don’t have to go to specific polling place. You can vote in the privacy of your own home or use the opportunity to gather with your friends, have a party and walk as a group to the conveniently located Ballot box dropping in all of your completed Ballots En Masse. There is no real excuse to not vote. Unless you just don’t want to. As I write this I am in my last Month of my 59th year. On the 18th of this Month I turn 60. I really find it hard to believe I am turning 60, but want you to join me in celebration at Rumor’s Cabaret Tuesday November 18th at 9pm. There will be a Roast and Toast of Betty Desire Turning 60. Come with your stories and party with me as I leave the 50’s behind! Then there is Thanksgiving!

It’s Thanksgiving month, Poppets, and if you celebrate the official holiday or not, being aware of the reasons to be thankful is always a good thing. As is being aware in general. So without further ado…

There you have it, Poppets. Six reasons to be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving, if you celebrate it. Happy Autumn if you don’t. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you – and each other.

If You’re You’re If Reading This... This... Reading then so are your customers. E-mail inthebettypages@gmail.com - subject line ‘Advertising’ for more information on advertising.

1.Be thankful for - marriage equality. States are falling like dominoes, Poppets. So many rights are conferred upon a couple once they are officially married. Plus, for people who want to be married, there is something about that piece of paper that makes it different. The tangible and the intangible. Marriage equality is a good thing. Be aware of – the laws that still don’t guarantee our safety, employment, or housing rights. Marriage equality is great, but only matters so much if you can be fired or evicted for being married to someone of your same gender. 2.Be thankful for – LGB people serving openly in the military. The fall of DADT was a few years ago now, but trust and believe, Poppets, it’s still a big deal. Be aware of – The absence of the “T” in the above alphabet. Transgendered military personnel still have to wait until after their military service has been completed before they can even talk about who they truly are, let alone begin any kind of transition. And for men and women who have already transitioned? Can’t even enlist. 3.Be thankful for - The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act. I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t even know this act existed, Poppets. It sets guidelines for providing shelter and care for our homeless youth. It adds protections specifically covering our homeless, runaway, and “thrown away” (the industry phrase for youth whose parents have kicked them out) youths. Passed in 2008, it’s heartbreaking that we need to have the act at all, but since we do need it, let’s be grateful for it. Be aware of – The exclusion of LGBTQ teens from the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act. There are no provisions for LGBTQ youth in the act itself. Yes, it would be nice to think that a general law protecting our youth would cover our LGBTQ children, too, but we all know that’s not necessarily the case. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless 20% of homeless youth are LGBT. In comparison, the general youth population is only 10% LGBT. While homeless youth typically experience severe family conflict as the primary reason for their homelessness, LGBT youth are twice as likely to experience sexual abuse before the age of 12. LGBT youth, once homeless, are at higher risk for victimization, mental health problems, and unsafe sexual practices. 58.7% of LGBT homeless youth have been sexually victimized compared to 33.4% of heterosexual homeless youth LGBT youth are roughly 7.4 times more likely to experience acts of sexual violence than heterosexual homeless youth LGBT homeless youth commit suicide at higher rates (62%) than heterosexual homeless youth (29%) (National Coalition for the Homeless, June 2009 http://www.nationalhomeless. org/factsheets/lgbtq.html) Given those statistics, the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act needs to be amended to protect the LGBTQ youth, explicitly and without question. 4.Be thankful for - International Transgendered Day of Remembrance. Every November 20th, we remember our transgendered brothers and sisters who have died because of the hatred and violence. There are no scheduled events in the Bellingham area yet, but don’t let that stop you from taking a moment – or organizing one. Be aware of – International Transgendered Day of Remembrance. The fact that we even need this day is painful. The fact that more and more names get added every year is painful. 5.Be thankful for – the people who have come before us. It is safer to be a mem-

ber of the LGBTQ community than ever before. We have more rights, more visibility, more acceptance, and more protections than any generation that has come before us. And we have it because of the generations that came before us. Be aware of – the sacrifices they made. It’s easy to look around and take for granted what we have. It’s easy to think it all came easily. Don’t be that person. 6.Be thankful for – the strength to continue the fight. You have it. I have it. We have the strength to get what needs to be changed changed. We have voices that are being heard. We have powerful allies and influential comrades. Every day, we make strides, because we just don’t quit. Be aware of – the fact that being out is a privilege. Not everyone lives in a community where it is safe to be out. Not everyone works in an industry where it is safe to be out. Those of us who can be must not add our hate to the hate they are already facing. Instead, we must fight for them, until none of us have to fight at all.

We were all new once. Depending on when we found the community/the scene/the lifestyle, we entered into it differently. There are certainly a number of ways to jump in and only you can make the decision about how you want to get started. Here are some options and the pros and cons that go with each. Munches There is one piece of advice that you’ll see over and over again: go to a munch! You may be asking yourself, “What the heck is a munch and why should I go to one?” A munch is a social gathering, most often in a public vanilla (non-kinky) place like a bar or restaurant or park, where kinky people get together to hang out and talk and enjoy each other’s company. Munches are a great starting place because they are low key and there is no pressure to participate in kinky activities. It’s just a bunch of people doing normal people things. You’ll hear conversations about jobs, families, relationships, kink, vacations, new shoes... Munches are a great way to get to know people beyond their kinks. Another great thing about munches is that they can be free if you go and order water and inexpensive if you order a soft drink; there’s no cover so they’re good for those on a budget.

Play Parties Play parties are the deep end of the pool, but a completely valid jumping off point for many. It gives you a chance to see kink in action. Keep in mind that different events have different themes, different energies, and different regulars, so what you see one week may be substantially different from what you might see the next. If you start off with a play party, make sure you read up on scene etiquette, negotiation, and the rules/policies of the venue. You may be approached and asked to play--how you answer is up to you. If you think you might play, you should also read up on “frenzy”, “aftercare”, “sub/top space”, and “drop”. (You can find articles on scene etiquette, negotiation, frenzy, aftercare, and more on my blog at www.beautyfulfreak.com.) One-on-One Conversations One of the most under-utilized jumping off points is the One-on-One Conversation. Send a message to the event organizer or one of the group leaders, explain that you’re new and nervous, ask some questions, and ask whether they’d be available to meet for coffee sometime. They might say no. They might ask if they can pass your name along to someone else who they think would be a better person for you to talk to. They might say yes. You never know unless you ask and a oneon-one conversation is a great thing to ask for. w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

Education Events If you already have some idea of what things interest you, education events can be a great jumping off point. They’ll give you information specific to something you find interesting (rope, pressure points, rough body play, burlesque, etc.) and you’ll get to meet people in a non-threatening, low pressure environment. Most education events are held in the same space as play parties, so you’ll have a chance to check out the space while the lights are all on and nothing overly sexual is happening (unless it’s that kind of class). Most well-established dungeons or playspaces have a “newbie night” or dungeon 101 or exploratorium sort of event. This is an education event that is specifically designed for newcomers and covers basics like dungeon etiquette and how to participate in certain kinky activities. In some places, it’s a required starting point. At others, it’s highly recommended.

Discussion Groups Discussion groups are great if you see a topic that interests you, such as polyamory or power exchange. They are usually smaller groups and have a moderator who will keep things on track and friendly. There is no expectation of play and no requirement to talk (you can just listen). Discussion groups can be a wonderful way to hear a broad range of experiences on a certain topic.

Silent Film Series - with Live Organist Dennis James – My Best Girl BELLINGHAM –Mount Baker Theatre is excited to provide the rare opportunity of experiencing silent films the way they were meant to be seen: in the vintage glamour of an ornate movie palace with a live film score provided by a musician furiously playing the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. Guest organist and historic preservationist Dennis James has spent over forty years honing his craft as a solo film accompanist, providing silent films with period-authentic live music using either the original scores issued with the films or historic photoplay assemblages. James takes these exciting compilation scores to MBT’s refurbished Wurlitzer, recreating the original sound of three silent films first shown at the Theatre when it opened in 1927. The first film in this three-show Silent Film series will be My Best Girl (1927), starring Mary Pickford, on Sunday, November 30 at 3:00pm. Mary Pickford produced and starred in this romantic comedy about a shop girl who gets more than she bargained for when she falls in love with a handsome new employee. Comedic chaos ensues when she learns that the five and dime’s charming hired hand is also the store owner’s son. “Dennis James’ playing brought tears to my eyes...his score was just what we intended it to be when we made the film.” Lillian Gish, silent film star ”Dennis James is without doubt the greatest practitioner of the art of solo silent film accompaniment. He’s a national treasure.” San Francisco Silent Film Festival Other films in this Silent Film Series Love (1927) starring Greta Garbo & John Gilbert Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, 3:00 The General (1927) starring Buster Keaton Sunday, Mar. 22, 2015, 3:00pm Tickets to My Best Girl, Silent Film with Organist Dennis James can be purchased for $22.50, $15 and $10 plus applicable fees. Students can purchase half-price tickets starting one hour prior to the performance.

Mount Baker Theatre announces the VIDA Guitar Quartet BELLINGHAM – The Mount Baker Theatre is excited to announce a performance by the VIDA Guitar Quartet on Friday, January 9 at 8:00pm. The VIDA Guitar Quartet brings together four guitarists of exceptional artistry and “unerring musical instinct.” Since forming in 2007, VIDA has performed to critical acclaim in major UK, US, and European venues. Critics praised the group’s debut album, Love, the Magician, as well as their follow-up release, Rhapsody; the album offers a sampling of VIDA’s diverse repertoire, which ranges from jazzy Gershwin to classical Bach, British rock, and beyond. VIDA has firmly established itself as a passionate, masterful ensemble that sparkles with energy and diversity. The group’s seemingly effortless teamwork and broad range of dynamics is evocative of an entire orchestra rather than merely four guitars. Says Gramophone, “There’s only one word for it: magic.” Tickets to the VIDA Guitar Quartet can be purchased for $42, $39, $32 and $20 plus applicable fees. Students can purchase half-price tickets starting one hour prior to the performance. 2014-2015 Season Sponsor is Saturna Capital. The Mount Baker Theatre receives support from a Tourism Facilities Grant from the City of Bellingham.

w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

The City of Bellingham has received a state grant from the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission to pay for enhanced DUI patrols. As a result of the influx of extra revenue the Bellingham Police Department will attempt to increase it’s DUI arrest rate by more than 50%. To accomplish this goal they are asking each enforcement officer to try to arrest 1 impaired driver every 4 hours. (One wonders what the consequences are if the Officer doesn’t reach that......dare I say it?..... …..Quota?) I think it is imperative that every legal age drinker in the City do everything in their power to see to it that the Police Department fails to reach their goal. If you are going out on a Friday, Saturday, and yes even a Sunday or Weekday night, leave your car at home! You can’t be arrested for a DUI if you’re not driving. (Bicycles are considered vehicles) Take the time to talk to your friends and find a designated driver for the evening. Most Bars will allow a designated driver free Soda for the night. Don’t worry if you draw the short straw and have to be the sober driver on Friday there’s always Saturday just one day away. If you are a Western Student there is shuttle service available for your use, take advantage of that option because the City Bus stops before most Happy Hours begin. If you are able walk, it is healthy for you, and let’s be honest there is no place in the down town core that is too far to walk. Plan ahead for your night out and set aside cab fare, a $40 dollar cab fare split 4 ways is only going to cost you 1 Mid Shelf Long Island Ice Tea plus tip! Most Cab Companies have flat rates to Ferndale, Blaine, and other Cities in the County, so ask the Cab driver about them and travel in groups so you can divide the cost. (Please remember to tip well) A DUI can cost thousands plus a night on an uncomfortable cot in a rather dreary olive green jump suit.. I know it can be a buzz kill but learn your limits and be diligent, there is such a thing as public drunkenness. If you have friends coming in from out of town warn them about these extra patrols. Don’t stop going out, just work at finding creative ways to avoid driving. If you are planning a celebratory weekend that includes out of town guests, or just you and your local friends, check into the cost of a hotel room for the night.. Some of the hotels have van service that will take you to your favorite watering hole and pick you up after your done. Wouldn’t it be nice to find out after this “project” is over in September of 2015 that DUI arrest rates actually fell not because of lack of enforcement, but because of fewer drivers drinking? It would mean Cities, Counties, and the cottage industry that relies on DUI arrests for it’s income might have to find a different revenue source but that’s not your problem. Party On Dude! Just don’t drive to get there. Will the last Reveler leaving Bellingham please, please take a cab!

As a member of the Major Arcana family The Temperance Card carries a great deal of power and advice. Traditionally the word temperance has to do with balance, moderation, and patience and like so many of the Major Arcana cards balance is key. I often refer to this card as the “alchemy” card. It indicates that there is something which has received little or no attention in our lives which has the power to transform us and we need only to begin to notice it, or perhaps, we need only to notice it to begin. True advancement requires balance and patience along with the power to creatively fill the void of expectation. The artwork for this card varies somewhat from deck to deck sometimes showing an individual holding fire in one hand and water in the other, or as in the case of the Robin Wood deck with one foot in the water and one on land while juggling. The Legacy Of The Divine Tarot by Ciro Marchetti depicts an angelic being swathed in satin holding fire in one hand and water in the other while floating in air in a shaft of sunlight. It indicates taking unrelated items and using them to transform each other into something far more valuable. Alchemy is a form of magick dedicated to shifting things in our lives. The old legends about magicians who could transform lead into gold were the most commonly retold about the process of alchemy. We all possess traits or talents which we may not consider valuable but this card encourages us to use our magick to improve our lives. The act of making a living often distracts us from the art of living and Temperance is speaking to us of those forgotten or ignored values which will guide us in creating the life we truly desire. When I see The Temperance Card appear in a reading I begin to examine how the querent is using his/her magick in their life’s challenges. It often indicates they have undertaken a new project or career based on something they had never considered before. This card serves as a beacon pointing the way to trusting your own magick. This card raises questions about the elements available to the querent. How are they making use of the elemental influences in their environment? What support systems are being overlooked while the querent is working at restoring balance and creativity in their lives? By peering deeper into the heart of the matter we can help each other understand the importance of rediscovering the wonder of living. The transformative power of Temperance is a very positive influence in any reading where this card appears. It serves to remind us of the power we already possess and the need to tap into that inner strength to accomplish our goals. For me this card speaks of the contract we each have made with the universe to make this life the most meaningful experience possible. How is Temperance or Alchemy at work in your own life right now? What examples of alchemy can you point to in your past? What plans are you currently considering which will call on you to use alchemy?
