BOOKSHELF

Paloma Sanchez Jewelry designer

If you only ever read one book about jewelry, make it ... Gems & Gemology, the journal of Gemological Institute of America. The book on my shelf with the most sentimental value is my father ’s love letters to my mum before they married. He published them when my mother died and gave each one of his children one book. There are more than 500 letters – one per day! The last book I read was I, Claudius by Robert Graves.

troy reilly guitarist, beijing beatles What would be your dream cover of a song? Recently I spotted pop star Robbie Williams wearing a Carlton Football Club uniform backstage at a UNICEF concert. I thought about taking this concept one step further and having one of my favorite singers of all time – Chris Cornell – update my beloved Richmond football club’s theme song, “We’re from Tigerland.” What is your favorite music video? The video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” still brings back fond memories for me. Kurt Cobain was the voice of my generation, marking the beginning of a new decade in which alternative rock ruled the airwaves in Australia.

Which character from a song would you most like to meet? John Lennon in the song “Nowhere Man.” Probably written about himself. I can completely relate to this song at this point in my life. It would be comforting right now to meet John and share a likeminded moment in time. What song would you want to be played at your funeral? Who wouldn’t want “My Way” By Frank Sinatra played at their funeral? Then again, if I chose this approach towards life, I don’t know how many people would be in attendance at my funeral! Troy and the Beijing Beatles play Temple Bar on Nov 9.

The last book I bought was Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. The book that I pretend to have read is The Divine Comedy by Dante. What’s my subway reading? I never take the subway.

have so much in common! The fictional character I’ve had a crush on is Colin, in L’Ecume des Jours by Boris Vian. The sweetest character ever! That’s also the book that I wish I had written. The book with the best beginning is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. The book with the best ending is any one that requires you to read Part II. The fictional “world” that I would most like to be part of? I’d like to live in Mount Olympus with the gods, as depicted in Homer’s Odyssey. The book that surprised me the most was Le Traité sur la tolérance (Treatise on Tolerance) by Voltaire.

My favorite book from childhood was White Fang by Jack London. I won it for being the first in my class when I was eight years old. Also, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I still read it from time to time.

If I could choose one book to be adapted into a film, it would be The Golden Fleece by Robert Graves.

The book I’m saving for old age is the Bible.

A good book to read during airplane turbulence? Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.

The book that changed my life is my family book, when I added my son to it! The fictional character that I’d like to meet would be the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. We

The book that I brought with me on my latest travels was Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarden.

My favorite line from a book is: “Ladran, luego cabalgamos” from Don Quixote. It means: “They bark – that means we are moving.” Visit Paloma at her Nali Patio store.

TROY REILLY’S 5-SONG PLAYLIST “Come Together” by John Lennon

“Get Back” by Paul McCartney

Another cover that I enjoy performing, especially the bluesy lead guitar parts that I have had to interpret in the absence of the funky keyboard solo from Billy Preston. “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye

I was blown away by Walk Off the Earth’s cover of this song – five

people playing one guitar. “The Wealth” by John Devlin

John plays the part of Raul McCarthy in our band. On his debut album, Contraplans, he sings: “Help yourself to the wealth – if you don’t, they will / We should have seen it coming but they left us with nothing.” I am sure there are plenty of people around here feel the same way.

The message rings true for me each time our lead singer Don Lemmon cries out at the end of the second verse: “One thing I can tell you is / You got to be free.”

“Alive” by Pearl Jam

One of the most influential rock bands of all time. I used to attend many of their concerts in Melbourne. They inspired me to start playing electric guitar. Find the full interviews at TheBeijinger.com
