We have commenced the new look digital Health & Wellbeing Program, the Volunteer Buddy Program is up and running, and plans are in place for virtual events and volunteer programs for the remainder of 2020. Given restrictions, we have adapted many of our programs, and we are excited to get things moving again. Keep an eye out for new calendars and program information in the coming months. I am pleased to relay that our Member numbers are reaching a fantastic milestone of 1000! If you are a member, thank you! If you have not yet joined, now is a perfect time. You will find more information on membership and the benefits inside our new-look Community News. We welcome all members new or old, to be part of our lovely community at The Bays. We will begin our Comprehensive Cancer Centre appeal later this year, with all funds raised going to support the new Cancer Centre due for completion in 2021. This new centre will transform treatment for cancer patients and their families on the Mornington Peninsula.

The state of the art multi-storey Comprehensive Cancer Centre on The Bays Hospital footprint, will provide world-class facilities and care in one convenient location. If you can, please consider donating. Your donation, no matter how big or small will create a positive difference a nd l eave a l egacy you will be proud of. The Bays Aged Care in Hastings has also opened its beautiful new doors. Carefully created to maintain the welcoming, homely feel that the previous home was renowned for, the residents can now enjoy ultimate luxury with cosy gas fires, stunning artwork, multiple living spaces, a designated family room, and state of the art aged care amenities. The Bays Comprehensive Cancer Centre A N U P D AT E F R O M C H I E F E X E C U T I V E O F F I C E R BY ELENA ALLEN The Bays Comprehensive Cancer Centre will provide the Mornington Peninsula Community with worldclass, cancer care, treatment, and support close to home. In April 2019, the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt, announced federal funding to boost cancer support services delivered by The Bays Healthcare Group. The federal funding will assist in the construction of a new Comprehensive Cancer Centre, improving the Mornington Peninsula community’s access to cancer treatment and care. The state of the art multi-storey Comprehensive Cancer Centre on The Bays Hospital footprint, will provide world-class facilities and care in one convenient location. Betty Corke knows just how much this new Comprehensive Cancer Centre will change the lives of cancer patients and their families, living on the Mornington Peninsula. In February 2019 a normally active and healthy Betty became extremely ill with nausea, weight loss, and energy decline. She was diagnosed with Cancer of the Small Bowel, and admitted to The Bays Hospital for bowel reconstruction surgery. Known less for her tears, and more for her cheeky sense of humour, Betty had tears of relief, and gratitude after reflecting on a year that has been, quite simply, “the most terrible and beautiful year of her life.” For the past eight months, Betty has experienced quite the journey from diagnosis through to treatment. Her support team of Dr Eric Torey, Dr Simone Steel, and a team of nursing staff focused on delivering the best treatment and care for her, however, Betty’s journey was far from easy.

After being diagnosed, her condition deteriorated significantly and she was placed in The Bays Intensive Care Unit in an induced coma. Once stable, Dr Richard La Nauze, performed stent surgery, enabling Betty to continue her post-operative care in The Bays Intensive Care Unit. Under Dr Simone Steel’s post-operative care, Betty commenced chemotherapy to combat cancer which had spread to her lymph nodes. For 4 hrs, every 3 weeks over 6 months, Betty received 7 cycles of treatment combining IV chemotherapy and oral chemotherapy, in The Bays purpose-designed Day Infusion and Chemotherapy Unit. “What I’ve experienced,” says Betty in a recognisably Irish lilt, “It’s more than just the medical care. I didn’t know these people, yet they were so beautiful, so caring. They kept me going and got me through. When you’re so ill, your nurses and all the doctors get to know you inside and out. They’re all there for you, through it all. I’ll never forget that. To be able to be in one place from the moment I was diagnosed, to being admitted to ICU and then for my chemo treatment, has been wonderful and I am just so grateful to have this all in the one hospital.” Betty is no stranger to The Bays. Her husband Dennis served on The Bays Board Building Committee and Betty joined The Bays membership program, however, she never anticipated she’d be experiencing The Bays as a patient with a life-threatening illness. “Everyone thinks hospitals are rich. But they aren’t. The community of the Mornington Peninsula all need to help them continue to provide such wonderful care. We all need to support the wonderful work they do.”

Betty said becoming a member has been a wonderful way to give back. I’ve never questioned supporting the hospital. It’s a charity that so many need in the community. But now that I’ve experienced it for myself, I’m even more grateful that it’s here, and for these people who have come into my life.” Betty’s experience reflects The Bays commitment and vision to build an all-encompassing Comprehensive Cancer Centre within The Bays Hospital. This vision is now ready to become a reality with works to commence in November 2020. The development of the Comprehensive Cancer and Rehabilitation Centre will give more patients the opportunity to have their diagnostics, treatment, surgery, rehabilitation, and access to complementary therapies in one location. This will have a profound impact on both the patient and their families. However, ongoing community support is still essential to complete the project. Please consider donating. Your donation, no matter how big or small, will create a positive difference and leave a legacy you will be proud of. As the ever-positive Betty puts it, “we have to keep supporting these angels. We’re lucky to have them.”

With your help — We will transform treatment for cancer patients and their families on the Mornington Peninsula. Simone Steel, Oncologist with patient, Betty Corke

The Bays team has missed all of the wonderful volunteers over the past few months whilst the volunteer program has been on hold. We look forward to welcoming our volunteers back safely when possible and will provide a further update soon.

Thank-you to The Bays Volunteers Thank you so much to the volunteers who have been busy creating all the wonderful knitted items and sewing face masks over the past few months for The Bays gift shop. Beautiful beanies, cardigans, booties, teddies, and a gorgeous knitted blanket have all been donated by the incredibly clever knitting team of volunteers and will be very much appreciated. Our volunteers have also been busy making face masks. The masks have proved so popular they can’t keep up with demand. All these items are great additions to The Bays gift shop.

In the coming months, we look forward to sharing with you The Bays Health & Wellbeing Program virtually via an online format. Moving forward health and wellness sessions will also be available to access in an online library for you to enjoy at your leisure. Our first session is Bladder Health during Covid-19 and is presented by The Bays prominent Urologist, Mr Alwin Tan. In Alwin’s humorous style, he offers some tips for bladder management during this challenging time. The Bays Giving Tree The Bays Giving Tree represents generations of babies #bornatthebays. It celebrates our history as a bush nursing hospital and our evolution into one of the finest maternity units in the country. Janette Eley is a loving mother of Katrina and proud grandmother to Felix, Rufus, and now, Frankie. As her family has grown, Janette has commemorated each new arrival by purchasing a leaf on The Bays Giving tree, joining generations of babies born at The Bays. Frankie’s purple plaque will take pride of place on a branch of The Bays Giving Tree, next to her mother and brothers, representing two generations of babies born at The Bays and ensuring a family legacy for years to come. The Giving Tree art installation is located in the main reception of The Bays Hospital and open to visitors during hospital operating hours. Our Giving Tree is a wonderful way to commemorate your baby’s birth, and by doing so, you can help future generations. For a tax-deductible donation of $150 you can order a leaf with your baby’s name and date of birth recorded on it. All funds raised through the Giving Tree program will be used to purchase much-needed equipment for The Bays Hospital Maternity Unit.
