ABOUT US

The Théâtre des Célestins is a municipal theatre located in the heart of the city, and directed by Claudia Stavisky and Marc Lesage. It is a unique cultural institution with a long and very specific history (the first building dates back to 1792 on the ruins of a Celestine monastery; the present building is from 1881). The Théâtre des Célestins is one of the rare French theatres, alongside the Comédie-Française and the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris, to commemorate more than two centuries of dramatic art. After two years of work, the Théâtre des Célestins re-opened, in 2005, to reveal one of the best Italian-style theatres in Europe. It testifies to the metamorphosis of the centre of Lyon, which today presents a fresh modern image, and is regarded as one of the world’s most remarkable cities. In addition to the 750-seat Italian-style theatre, a second small house (130 seats) has now been added. As a creative theatre open to the world, the Théâtre des Célestins celebrates in its 2016/2017 season a decade of artistic adventure, presenting major works from the classical repertoire and contemporary productions alike, new talents and great masters, emblematic internationally renowned actors and rising stars, revelations from the Conservatoire de Lyon, from ENSATT and from the schools of dramatic art in the Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes region. With its 26 productions, 243 performances, 5 new productions and 6 coproductions, the 2016/2017 programme of the Théâtre des Célestins confirms its commitment to promoting creative work. With its resolutely eclectic outlook, the Théâtre des Célestins seeks diversity for all. Claudia Stavisky and Marc Lesage Co-directors

NEW PRODUCTION

28TH SEPTEMBER → 8TH OCTOBER 2016 ANDORRA

Based on the original work by Max Frisch - Direction Sarkis Tcheumlekdjian

With Jérôme Cochet, Océane Desroses, Nicolas Gabion, Déborah Lamy, Claude Leprêtre, Didier Vidal A stranger called Andri lives in an imaginary world set in Andorra where everything is as white as snow. They say that the young man had been snatched from the jaws of the Grey Wolves, an enemy country, by the school headmaster. The population boasts of this heroic act, until the threat of invasion becomes clear ... Written in 1961 during the aftermath of World War Two, this play by Max Frisch questions the nature of exclusion and the mechanisms that lead communities to search for a scapegoat. As the case for all the plays produced by the Premier Acte company, Andorra is rather like a daydream situated between reality and the supernatural. This is theater of a humanist nature which invites the viewer to be vigilant and maintain their lucidity.

With The Toad Knew, his latest piece, he surprises us once again and renews his acquaintance with the themes of La Symphonie du hanneton, the piece that established his reputation. Flirting with the limits of what is possible, James Thierrée variously appears as an exceptional acrobat and a sad clown in a skilful mix of tragedy and burlesque. Constantly defying the laws of gravity, he leads us into the whirlwind of a surrealist symphony played by performers with an astounding amount of energy. Here is a chance for you to marvel at this fine production. In association with the Radiant-Bellevue.

2016/2017 SEASON INTERNATIONAL - CHILE

8TH → 19TH NOVEMBER 2016 ACCESO

By Pablo Larraín and Roberto Farías With Roberto Farías

Plebiscited during the latest edition of the Festival Sens interdits, Acceso is an exceptional production. Pablo Larraín, who directed the captivating film No, uses a rare amount of organic power to depict the character of Sandokan, a travelling salesman. Robert Farías plays a symbolic figure of marginalization and exclusion and the hardened nature of his words are challenging. The victim of sexual abuse and all manner of ill-treatment that are still anchored deep within him, this tormented soul forcefully reveals the irrevocable traumatisms of an abused childhood. A ferocious and highly political play, Acceso offers a biting glimpse into the state of modern Chile using authentic language and the irrepressible force of natural and uncluttered theater that is heavily charged with pain, resistance and love.

NEW PRODUCTION

15TH NOVEMBER → 7TH DECEMBER 2016 SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION / TABLEAU D’UNE EXÉCUTION

By Howard Barker - Direction Claudia Stavisky

With David Ayala, Geoffrey Carey, Éric Caruso, Christiane Cohendy, Anne Comte, Valérie Crouzet, Simon Delétang, Sava Lolov, Philippe Magnan, Mickaël Pinelli The Republic of Venice in 1571, during the Renaissance. Galactia, a painter, is commissioned to paint a monumental work that commemorates the Battle of Lepanto and glorifies the victory of the Venetian state against the Ottoman Empire, but instead of depicting this apology for combat she chooses to illustrate the truth about the war and its reality, which consists of death and the raw images of bodies. This troubling work offends the sensibilities of the powers that be and she finds herself embroiled in a duel which pits art against the mechanics of power. Blunt and cruel, Scenes from an execution presents twenty tableaux that explore the intimate and public spheres of the creation of a work of art via the torturous journey of a woman in a brutal manner. Using a language of poetic and uncompromising depth, cutting and biting, the words unveil sensitive, convulsive and edgy being. There are almost no props to be seen, yet this poetic influence is omnipresent on stage. A painter as well as a writer, Howard Barker follows the path that leads from the creation of a work of art to the death of this creative experience at the hands of political power.

23TH NOVEMBER → 3RD DECEMBER 2016 THEY SAY WE ARE NO LONGER BROADCASTING LIVE / LE BRUIT COURT QUE NOUS NE SOMMES PLUS EN DIRECT

A collective production by Simon Bakhouche, Mélanie Bestel, Judith Davis, Claire Dumas, Nadir Legrand - L’ Avantage du doute Quickly accelerating news deadlines and the omnipresence of press campaigns are the era we live in, and revolted by the current state of the media landscape, the Avantage du doute collective has taken on the risky challenge of creating an independent and highly committed TV station, Éthique TV, an organization which makes no effort to conceal or misrepresent the news and its personalities. In the spirit of free radio stations, but with images replacing sound, these self-taught journalists make of us both the witnesses and accomplices of the unfettered debate offered by a TV station which is quirky and offbeat to say the least. Using a delicious sense of autoderision They Say We are no Longer Broadcasting Live is a passionate critical and philosophical reflection on the nature of the media in this, a true example of political theater which makes us both laugh and think seriously about the media.

15TH → 31ST DECEMBER 2016 SEA GIRLS - THE REVUE / SEA GIRLS - LA REVUE

Written and performed by Agnès Pat’, Judith Remy, Prunella Rivière, Delphine Simon - Direction Philippe Nicolle Broadway and the rousing music of a big band with, in the backlight, paradisiacal dancers wearing costumes worthy of the world’s most famous revues and going down the stairs with a haughty look and finely-honed choreography. Your attention ladies and gentlemen, the show is about to begin! Feathers, sequins, glitter and ribbons, nothing is too beautiful for the Sea Girls and these four beautiful women are about to pull out all the stops. Under the direction of Philippe Nicolle from the 26,000 Couverts company, the spectator will revel in the burlesque nature of each situation and the highly amusing fishwife-style arguments of the performers as well as the manner in which they attack each other as if they were in a film and love each other to the airs of opera music. In other words, this is a review of a kind never seen before. It is a whimsical and off-the-wall moment of pure entertainment.

INTERNATIONAL - UNITED STATES

17TH → 31ST DECEMBER 2016 CIRCUS INCOGNITUS

Written and performed by Jamie Adkins Acclaimed at the Célestins four years ago, Jamie Adkins has continued to present his one-man circus on stages all over the world and with much success. Circus Incognitus is the story of a dreamy and lovable being, an atypical clown with something to say but who cannot find the right words to express it. A funny stunt man à-la Chaplin and a charmingly mischievous acrobat, Jamie Adkins excels in all he does with disarmingly nonchalant insolence. Without needing words he tames the imaginary, juggles our emotions and triumphs in the most dangerous of situations. Circus Incognitus is a precious piece of theater. It is a gem of comic genius, charm and tenderness which frees us with a hearty laugh and wakes up the child in all of us.

NEW PRODUCTION

10TH → 14TH JANUARY 2017 THE ROYAL FAMILY / LA FAMILLE ROYALE

Based on the original work by William T. Vollmann - Adaptation and Direction Thierry Jolivet / La Meute – Théâtre With Florian Bardet, Zoé Fauconnet, Isabel Aimé Gonzalez Sola, Nicolas Mollard, Marion Pellissier, Julie Recoing, Antoine Reinartz, Paul Schirck

The aroma of debauchery and scandal blows over this, the new piece by La Meute. Following on from the staggering Belgrade, this talented collective led by Thierry Jolivet revisits its incandescent universe in order to share the intensity of the hallucinatory writing of William T. Vollmann. A portrait of a nightmarish America, this somber and venomous account plunges us into the heart of all that is depraved via the slow decline of Henry Tyler, a private detective who has been hired by a cynical businessman to infiltrate the world of prostitution. La Meute adapts this incredible quest and delivers an amplified version of it that mixes music with fulgurant dialogue whose Shakesperian accents are transformed by the sensual and visceral performance of the performers.

2016/2017 SEASON 17TH → 28TH JANUARY 2017 AMPHITRYON

By Molière - Direction Guy Pierre Couleau

With Isabelle Cagnat, Luc-Antoine Diquéro, Kristof Langromme, Francois Rabette, Nils Öhlund, Jessica Vedel, Clémentine Verdier This is a mythological fantasy in which wily and manipulative gods descend from the sky to spread much confusion among the people. This singular comedy by Molière is a variation of the theme of the double and the mirror which features magical stage direction which conjugates the minutia of a cosmic décor and fluid acting, Guy Pierre Couleau throws light upon the ongoing pertinence and wealth of writing which is made unique by the rhythm of its lightning-fast succession of misunderstandings. Pointing an accusatory finger at the gods, Amphitryon is a withering diatribe aimed at the all-powerful. By questioning beliefs and the ambivalence of the links between faith and reason, this play marks the emergence of a world of responsibilities and gives new life to the genius of Molière in all its intemporality.

NEW PRODUCTION

18TH → 28TH JANUARY 2017 LADIES DRESSMAKER / TAILLEURS POUR DAMES

Based on the original work by Georges Feydeau - Direction Louise Vignaud

With Prune Beuchat, Joseph Bourillon, Pauline Coffre, Marief Guittier, Clément Morinière, Mickaël Pinelli, Thomas Rortais, Charlotte Villalonga Moulineau is an average citizen who gets bored with the bourgeois comfort of his daily existence with his wife Yvonne, so in an effort to take his mind off his humdrum life he goes to the Opera Ball with the intention of conquering the elegant Suzanne Aubin. But suddenly he realizes that he should not have left his keys at home… In this mise-en-scène by Louise Vignaud, Feydeau’s intention is to be corrosive and critical as possible, and behind the laughter and the superficial tone attempt to hide the desperate efforts of the characters to escape from conformism. In scratching the veneer of vaudevillian tradition, La Résolue company puts the accent on the grating nature of this human and social comedy whilst simultaneously reminding us of the power of laughter.

31ST JANUARY → 4TH FEBRUARY 2017 BLACK EARTH / TERRE NOIRE

By Stefano Massini - Direction Irina Brook

This play, written by Stefano Massini and interpreted by Romane Bohringer, Hippolyte Girardot and directed by Irina Brook, takes a look at a highly topical subject that is never far from the news. An engrossing and passionate study of the inner workings of the environmental corruption of major multinational companies, Black Earth is the reflection of a world in peril faced the cold and dehumanizing power of finance.

1ST → 17TH FEBRUARY 2017 I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD ONLY / JE CROIS EN UN SEUL DIEU

By Stefano Massini - Direction Arnaud Meunier With Rachida Brakni

I Believe in One God Only takes a hard look at the issues facing Israël today via the crossed narratives of an Israeli professor, a Palestinian student and an American military woman. This piece features a mesmerizing performance by Rachida Brakni, who plays all three characters and depicts their respective visions of the same reality, that of a horrifying bomb attack that would occur one year after the story begins. In the wake of Chapitres de la chute, Saga des Lehman Brothers, Arnaud Meunier continues his exploration of the theater/testimony of Stefano Massini, and in this piece the daily risks of life in Israel engender a surprising irony. Arnaud Meunier has created the setting for a passionate quest for sense in a contemporary world which is undergoing major upheaval.

8TH → 17TH FEBRUARY 2017 COLD BLOOD

By Michèle Anne De Mey, Jaco Van Dormael - Kiss & Cry company

A collective production with Grégory Grosjean, Thomas Gunzig, Julien Lambert, Sylvie Olivé, Nicolas Olivier and the participation of Thomas Beni, Gladys Brookfield-Hampson, Boris Cekevda, Gabriella Lacono, Aurélie Leporcq, Bruno Olivier, Stefano Serra A wonderful voyage to the heart of the infinitely subtle, Cold Blood prolongs the theme explored by choreographer Michèle Anne De Mey and filmmaker Jaco Van Dormael in the unforgettable Kiss & Cry. A delicate and original alchemy of cinema, theater and a ‘nanodance’, this second work presents images of a deeply moving simplicity about the souvenirs that accompany us as we shuffle off our mortal coil, and hands express themselves onstage within miniaturized cinema decors. Filmed live, the projected images reconstitute an animated micro-world within a permanent juxtaposition of illusion. Cold Blood owes its remarkable emotional power to its approach, which recounts all that is minute, dense and essential in our lives.

NEW PRODUCTION

7TH → 17TH MARCH 2017 GROWING OLD (DIS)GRACIOUSLY / LES GRAVATS

A collective production by Jean-Pierre Bodin, Alexandrine Brisson, Bonaventure Gacon, Jean-Louis Hourdin With Jean-Pierre Bodin, Bonaventure Gacon, Jean-Louis Hourdin

We are not born to die but to live! Three bodies, three voices and three perspectives are present on the stage, where Jean-Louis Hourdin, Jean-Pierre Bodin and Bonaventure Gacon play the roles of three older people who are upbeat despite the worries of daily life and its illnesses as well as all those who grow old ungracefully. Playful meanness and petty interludes, surges of tenderness and tales of humbling souvenirs all nourish the profoundly uplifting dialogue. In this ‘dance of the old bones’ it is difficult not to take pleasure in going to the other side and finally offer oneself the right to consider questions of banter and flippancy. Much more than a spa treatment, Growing Old (Dis) graciously is a fraternal adventure in tandem with a joyful lesson in life.

12

2016/2017 SEASON 8TH → 15TH MARCH 2017 UND

By Howard Barker - Direction Jacques Vincey With Natalie Dessay and Alexandre Meyer

A woman is waiting for a man but he is late, so she begins to speak. Und is a study of the troubling relationships that can develop between two people who find themselves torn between duo and duel, desire and anguish, arm-wrestling and a chess battle. The performance of the celebrated soprano Natalie Dessay is deeply moving in this, her first appearance in comedy, and her tightrope-walking switches between laughter and tears as well as seduction and rage display great acting finesse. Her words blend into the context of this frozen fortress and incessant rain in a décor of threateningly suspended sheets of cutting ice. Und is a formidable sensorial experience which explores all the ambiguities of love affairs and tries to make sense of our existence by affirming the power of words as a weapon.

COPRODUCTION

21TH → 25TH MARCH 2017 MAYDAY

By Dorothée Zumstein - Direction Julie Duclos - l’In-quarto company With Maelia Gentil, Vanessa Larré, Marie Matheron, Alix Riemer, Bino Sauitzvy

An unfettered look back at the past, MayDay is a series of snapshots from the life of Mary Burns, who was found guilty of a crime at the age of 11 and who accepted an interview request thirty years later in an effort to exorcise her past. The result is a fragmented account of her acts that takes place in a universe reminiscent of Nancy Huston’s Fault Lines, and the play is a monumental account which resembles a multitude of voices expressing themselves via one sole being. Following Nos Serments Julie Duclos continues her research into forms of theater which reach the frontiers of intimacy. Like a spiral which sucks in everything in its path MayDay addresses the invisible and reminds us of how are made of everything that has preceded us and which we carry deep within ourselves.

30TH MARCH → 7TH APRIL 2017 KARAMAZOV

Based on The Karamazov brothers by Fyodor Dostoevsky - Direction Jean Bellorini

With Michalis Boliakis, François Deblock, Mathieu Delmonté, Karyll Elgrichi, Jean-Christophe Folly, Jules Garreau, Camille de La Guillonnière, Jacques Hadjaje, Blanche Leleu, Clara Mayer, Teddy Melis, Marc Plas, Geoffroy Rondeau, Hugo Sablic and a child The Karamazov Brothers is a vertiginous and polyphonic work that takes a look at servitude and freedom. Four brothers find themselves confronted by questions of responsibility, and from the grotesque to the tragic they find themselves on a journey that takes them from love to filial abjection. This is an exploration of what engaging one’s values means whilst pushing the boundaries of madness ever further away. Jean Bellorini uses his abilities as a director with this major piece to continue his work with major narrative text in theater. By drawing a thin line between music and words he puts the accent on the lyrical power of an exceptional work with this play and its festive character.

2016/2017 SEASON

13

11TH → 20TH APRIL 2017 IN HONOR OF OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE /

HONNEUR À NOTRE ÉLUE

By Marie NDiaye - Direction Frederic Bélier-Garcia

With Isabelle Carré, Patrick Chesnais, Romain Cottard, Jan Hammenecker, Jean-Paul Muel, Chantal Neuwirth, two children. In progress Isabelle Carré is our elected representative. Supported by a large majority of the population, she has been reelected as Mayor several times over the last ten years. It could even be said of her that she possesses all the qualities of an exceptional leader, including that of commanding the respect of her most virulent political opponents. This piece by Marie NDiaye takes place in a context of shadowy maneuvering and power, taking a subtle look at the hidden side of politics by studying everything that is fascinating and repulsive about this leader. What alienations and culpabilities are hidden deep inside a female politician with an apparently exemplary record? How does one wrest power from someone whose moral integrity seems to be unshakeable? These are the questions asked by this unique and mesmerizing play.

11TH → 15TH APRIL 2017 A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE / VU DU PONT

By Arthur Miller - Direction Ivo van Hove

With Nicolas Avinée, Charles Berling, Pierre Berriau, Frédéric Borie, Pauline Cheviller, Alain Fromager, Laurent Papot, Caroline Proust Eddie Carbone is a docker who has worked hard all his life in order to be able to offer a better to his orphaned niece than his own, but when she grows older and falls in love with a distant cousin he sinks into deep despair. Miller found his subject matter for this modern version of Lost Paradise from this story of a few decisive days in the life of one man. In adapting this work the Flemish director Ivo van Hove – one of the masters of European theater today – proposes a French version supported by a splendid cast including Charles Berling as Eddie Carbone, a human ‘block of granite’ whose humanity has been damaged. Van Hove goes to the heart of Miller’s work and offers Eddie a lifeline whilst delivering an immense moment of theater to the audience. In association with the Radiant-Bellevue.

INTERNATIONAL - GERMANY

4TH → 6TH MAY 2017 ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS / ROCCO UND SEINE BRÜDER

Based on the film by Luchino Visconti - Adaptation and Direction Simon Stone

With the Münchner Kammerspiele company Gundars Ābolinš, Johannes Geller, Thomas Hauser, Brigitte Hobmeier, Maj-Britt Klenke, Christian Lober, Stefan Merki, Wiebke Puls, Franz Rogowski, Hannah Schutsch, Samouil Stoyanov Luchino Visconti’s Rocco and his Brothers provoked a social and humanist electroshock when it was first screened in 1960. This story of Rosaria and her four sons fleeing the south of Italy and its misery for Milan illustrates how the innocence of traditions is confronted with the reality of urban life. By adapting this celebrated film into a stage play Simon Stone and the Kammerspiele company in Munich do more than merely transpose its savage atmospherics, they modernize them and place them into our present lives. With only the boxing ring to offer them any hope of climbing the social ladder the lives of the Parondi brothers resemble a combat sport. Without ever conceding to the brutal reality of Europe today this piece, an impressive theatric adventure, exalts the tragic with poignant intensity.

16TH MAY → 4TH JUNE 2017 THE SNEIJDER CASE / LE CAS SNEIJDER

Based on the novel by Jean-Paul Dubois - Adaptation and Direction Didier Bezace

With Pierre Arditi, Sylvie Debrun, Thierry Gibault – In progress

Didier Bezace calls once again upon the services of the excellent Pierre Arditi and several other former collaborators for this adaptation of Jean-Paul Dubois’s remarkable novel. Paul Sneijder is the sole survivor of a terrible elevator accident in which his daughter died, and thus begins a strange process of self-questioning about everything that composes his existence, as if the nature of his reality had been changed somehow. But things change even more when he becomes interested in a new form of activity, that of a dog walker. This biting yet comedy-filled play is a sensitive and subtle analysis of all the tiny habits and narrow views which make up our individual reality. It is the delicate portrait of a lonely soul who became a victim of social conformity.

INTERNATIONAL - LUXEMBOURG

17TH → 27TH MAY 2017 THE EVENTS / LES ÉVÉNEMENTS

By David Greig - Direction Ramin Gray With Romane Bohringer and Antoine Reinartz

The Events explores our ability to fathom the unfathomable. In this major piece of Scottish dramaturgy written by David Greig and produced by Ramin Gray, Romane Bohringer plays Claire, a priest with a keen interest in managing a choral group in a communitarian milieu whose entire existence is shattered when a young man of his acquaintance fires a weapon at people he does not think are ‘one of us’. Claire’s life, now shaken to the core by the sheer monstrosity of such violence and the plurality of points of view that become exposed, serves as a mirror held up before us all. This tasteful combination of acting and the unique musicality of a choir is added to by the presence of a welcome and necessary message of salvation that reminds us that, even if broken, people and communities can overcome the damage and move on.

1ST → 9TH JUNE 2017 MEND THE LIVING / RÉPARER LES VIVANTS

Based on the novel by Maylis de Kerangal - Direction Sylvain Maurice With Vincent Dissez and Joachim Latarjet

This is a story of the heart. Simon Limbres, who is nineteen years old, loves life, Juliette, music and surfing, but one Sunday morning he meets his destiny on his way back from the beach in the form of a serious traffic accident that leaves him brain dead, although his heart is still beating. The tragic event is followed by mourning and stupor, but there is also the hope of saving another life, that of a woman called Claire. The result of Sylvain Maurice’s adaptation of the book by Maylis de Kerangal is a piece that resounds to the beating of a heart, from the donor to the recipient in a race against the clock that lasts just a little over 24 hrs. Mend The Living is a magistral and devastating ode to life and the meeting of human destinies. In association with the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération-Les Ateliers, Centre dramatique national de Lyon.

Inspired by the work of writers such as Debord, Pasolini, Muray and Sade an artists’ collective directed by David Ayala shines a harsh spotlight on the alienating mechanisms of ultra liberalism, and The Wind id Rising tells its tale in the form of successive scenes that depict our daily lives by presenting them in tragic-comedic form. This play reveals that despite our contemporary realities we can still be sensitive human beings and, thanks to hope and courage, see what a better world may look like.

13TH → 17TH JUNE 2017 NOBODY

Based on the original work by Falk Richter - Direction Cyril Teste / Collectif MxM

With the actor’s collective of La Carte Blanche Elsa Agnès or Valentine Alaqui, Fanny Arnulf, Victor Assié, Laurie Barthélémy, Pauline Collin, Florent Dupuis, Katia Ferreira, Mathias Labelle, Quentin Ménard, Sylvère Santin, Morgan Lloyd Sicard, Camille Soulerin, Vincent Steinebach, Rébecca Truffot Jean Personne is a business restructuring consultant. He is the author of the downfall of others but also of his own fall from grace and he becomes the cynical hero in a situation he no longer controls before sinking ever deeper into an uncertain world which forces him to confront his fears and memories of his private life. Nobody, by Falk Richter, explores a highly original way of using images and the MxM collective exploits it to invent a new way of speaking and thinking that puts the actor at the heart of a production that uses video, sound, light and other new technologies. Set between documentary and fiction, Nobody is an acerbic piece that depicts the blind violence of a system which infiltrates our most intimate being and deepest thoughts with humor and lucidity. 16 LES CÉLESTINS, THÉÂTRE DE LA MÉTROPOLE

LES CÉLESTINS, THÉÂTRE DE LA MÉTROPOLE

17

The 2016/17 season is particularly marked by our determination to propose theater that is accessible to all publics. There will be performances by some of Europe’s greatest actors and many prestigious artists, but there will also be contributions by some lesser-known yet highly audacious artistic collectives who symbolize an energetic and inventive younger generation. This season will also see a repeat of our many partnership and collaborative initiatives consisting of shared programming, dialogue and exchanges, meetings, conferences, discovery tours and other activities. The Célestins wholly supports the efficient and cooperative circulation of plays and publics and it has also been involved in educational projects and other initiatives over the last several years.

SUPPORTING CREATION Claudia Stavisky’s upcoming creation is Scenes from an execution by Howard Barker, who is a leading figure in contemporary British theater. This piece is a study of the act of creation and the attitudes of artists who were opposed by the political ‘powers-that-were’ in Renaissance Venice. Four other pieces by three directors from the region will also be presented : Thierry Jolivet (La Meute - Théâtre), Sarkis Tcheumlekdjian (1er Acte company) and Louise Vignaud (La Résolue company). Also, six coproductions will highlight the support the Célestins offers to major on-stage figures such as Elise Vigier and Marcial Di Fonzo Bo, James Thierrée, Michèle Anne de Mey and Jaco Van Dormael as well as Julie Duclos, Didier Bezace and David Ayala.

THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE Loyalty to Artists This season will give our public the chance to rediscover international artists such as Pablo Larraín, the Chilean director of the film No, who is set to return with his hard-hitting piece Acceso, which was one of the highlights of this year’s Festival Sens Interdits. Also, and in the context of the Christmas and New Year period, we will be proposing Circus Incognitus along with its formidable actor, clown and circassian, the American Jamie Adkins. This production is currently on a world tour. Finally, following the incredible success of their piece Kiss and Cry in 2014, the Belgian duo consisting of choreographer Michèle Anne de Mey and the film director Jaco Van Dormael will be returning to the Célestins to present their new piece. Directors appearing for the first time In line with its policy of a never ending quest for new theatric horizons, the Célestins is programming the following three directors for the first time. • Belgian director Ivo van Hove who, having directed Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge in Great Britain (it played to full houses for two years) will be representing this production in French. • The Australian Simon Stone will be directing the German actors from the Munich Kammerspiele company in a resolutely contemporary adaptation of Visconti’s chef d’oeuvre Rocco and his Brothers. • Ramin Gray from Great Britain will be producing The Events by David Greig, with Romane Bohringer taking the lead role.

For English-speakers From now on, each of Claudia Stavisky’s productions include, for a certain number of performances, surtitles in English. In this manner, the foreign public, whether visitors or residents, will be able to attend the shows. The performances of Howard Barker’s Scenes from an execution on December 2nd, 3rd and 4th 2016 will be subtitled in English.

LES CÉLESTINS, THÉÂTRE DE LA MÉTROPOLE

SPONSORSHIP The Théâtre des Célestins has an international perspective and now plays a full role in increasing the prestige, appeal and dynamic of the metropolis of Lyon. With the objective of bringing productions of a high artistic standard and wonderful diversity to the largest audience it can, the Théâtre des Célestins is developing new initiatives and joining forces more broadly with the economic stakeholders involved in the creation and innovation of the metropolis of Lyon. Major sponsors, sponsors of projects and skills and the members of the Cercle Célestins are involved in the development of the Théâtre des Célestins and are helping with the implementation of projects, thus reflecting their commitment to the city.

Testimony by the Banque Rhône-Alpes, Founding sponsor “The Banque Rhône-Alpes has supported the Théâtre des Célestins as a founding sponsor since 2006. A taste for innovation, a quest for excellence and a culture of performance are values to which the theatre and the bank are deeply attached. This partnership has enabled us to organise numerous public relations operations to which over 700 clients and prospects have been invited. In addition, thanks to this commitment we are involved in raising the cultural prestige of the city and the region. The excellent relations we have enjoyed for the past 8 years with all the theatre’s teams shows that links can be established between the world of business and the world of culture. We sincerely hope that we will be joined in the near future by other businesses which, like us, have a heartfelt will to support the Théâtre des Célestins.” Éric Vernusse, Communication Director 60% of contributions in the context of sponsorship can be set against corporation tax, and sponsors are also entitled to a maximum rebate of 25% on their contributions. The net cost to a business thus stands at 15% of the donations paid.

The new stage curtain was generously commissioned by the Groupe Toupargel in 2014 and designed by Zwy Milshtein.

«As a responsable and civic-minded company, the Groupe Toupargel contributes to the artistic and cultural well-being and promotion of the Rhône-Alpes region, and as such we naturally support the committed programming and audacious decisions of the Théâtre des Célestins. We are also immensely pleased to have been able to offer a new stage curtain for the theater’s artistic creation.» Roland Tchénio, June 2014, President of the Endowment Fund

«LA CHOSE PUBLIQUE» PROJECT

19

Claudia Stavisky, director of the Théâtre des Célestins, has organised a program of cultural education and theater workshops with the residents of Vaulx-en-Velin that started in September 2014. A fable by Philippe Dujardin - La Chose Publique ou l’invention de la politique (Res Publica or the Invention of Politics) – gave rise to a desire to meet with local residents. Coming together and exchanging ideas are the foundations of humanity, as well as the indispensable condition for any artistic undertaking. Claudia Stavisky backs this project because of its dual character, which is both artistic and civic.

TAKING «LA CHOSE PUBLIQUE» TO THE SCHOOL OF VAULX-EN-VELIN In his fable, Philippe Dujardin presents «La chose publique» as being «great art», and it is rooted in principles which permit the creation of what he calls «deciding together». These principles were the object of a study during the 2014/15 season by Claudia Stavisky, Philippe Dujardin, the actress Cécile Auxire-Marmouget and the educational teams from three colleges in Vaulx-en-Velin along with almost 250 students. By providing these students the means to formulate their thoughts and learn how to use language the project taught them essential convictions that involve using speech and debate as the foundations for democracy and the art of living together as a society.

FROM THE PEN TO THE STAGE: THE COLLECTIVE ADVENTURE OF A VAULX-EN-VELIN COMPANY

Claudia Stavisky is supervising an artistic collective form with the inhabitants of Vaulx-en-Velin, a suburb of Lyon, and the members of the company reflect the diversity of the city as it includes men and women of all ages and all social, geographical and cultural origins. The question of public spiritedness is at the heart of this project, which has adopted a political, philosophical and poetic approach. The members of the group received privileged theater training during the 2015/16 season and in April 2016, inspired by the dialogue established between the inhabitants during writing workshops, associated author Simon Grangeat presented the text of the piece, which will be interpreted by the company under the direction of Claudia Stavisky. The ‘Vaudais’, as they are known, were also helped by training sessions offered by actress and director Cécile Auxire-Marmouget, actor, singer and musician Abdelwaheb Sefsaf and circassian artist Thomas Sénécaille. Rehearsals for this piece will intensify during the 2016/17 season. Project managers will accompany the participants in order to teach them the basic elements of numerous technical aspects of theater such as scenography, video, sound, light and dressmaking, and company members will work with these professionals in order to choose the work area(s) in which they would like to work during this project. This collective effort has for objective the presentation of the resulting piece at the Célestins, the Charlie Chaplin Cultural Center and in other areas of Lyon metropolis.

MEANWHILE, OFFSTAGE…

The Théâtre des Célestins has organized many meetings and other events between performers and publics over the last 15 years, as well as one-off encounters and regular workshops. From a tour of the building to an exploration of the various facets of theatre life, via the present and future challenges of this major institution in the metropolis, the team from the Théâtre des Célestins initiates and develops meetings with authors, directors, actors, technicians and administrators. In addition to our support for new productions the Célestins has been initiating educational events, such as readings by high school students and workshops that address the more practical aspects of theater work. Over 18,000 people have taken part in these events so far this season.

A PLACE OF DISCOVERY

The Célestins is also a partner in the European Heritage Day initiative, and the latest edition, in September 2015, saw 3000 people visiting the theater. Almost 1300 visitors came to see the public costumes exhibition that took place at the theater in January 2016, and an auction by the Conan Hôtel d’Ainay drew 450 visitors to the sale of 80 items. This event raised over €33,000 for the Théâtre-Ecole/ «La chose publique» project.

191 group tours were organized for almost 5,540 visitors. These tours were for a young public (117 in total) as well as an adult public (66 tours, including 26 for insertion groups), not forgetting specially-designed tours for people with disabilities.

A PLACE OF EXPLORATION

Linked to the shows, 18 stage visits were an opportunity for 950 spectators to see theatrical creation up close. Claudia Stavisky also invited Fabrice Arfi, Head of Investigative Journalism at online press investigation site Mediapart, author of Le sens des affaires and Voyage au bout de la corruption, to share the platform with her at a public meeting that attracted 400 participants. With the Université Lyon 2, the UTA, 3 lectures were organised in order to explore dramaturgical worlds in their historic, political and social context, and also 4 encounters with the artistic teams. This opportunity open to a very broad public reached over 250 people. We organised 5 readings in collaboration with our partners, the Goethe Institute and the libraries of Lyon. These events brought together 150 people. With its regional partner institutions, 5 pathways have enabled 190 spectators to attend events outside our programme. In parallel with these activities the Célestins theater played host to 21 meetings organized in partnership with other artistic structures such as the Festival Quai du Polar, the renowned Lyon Light Festival, the Villa Gillet, the Lyon Conservatory, Mode d’emploi and others. These events attracted over 5,400 people in total.

A THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

In schools and universities, to stimulate interest in theatre and to familiarise them with this living art, 11 meetings were organised for around 300 young people. Ten educational pathways have been created in conjunction with 10 schools in the region, and they have allowed 380 young people to attend expression and voice technique workshops that have been organized to coincide with new productions. 7 actors joined in, for over 123 hours in total, to help run workshops. To go further into the exploration of the theatre today, 11 young people from various high schools and colleges in the Lyon area attended the 13th High-School Reading Committee, which focussed on the highly individual writing of the author Sonia Ristic, with Migrants and Mariette Navarro with Les feux de poitrine. Christian Taponard, actor and director ran the group for close to 60 hours. The final restitution in March brought together 140 spectators, parents, friends, not used to listening to contemporary texts. In echo of the project devised for the High-School Reading Committee, 120 young college students have attended classroom initiation sessions into the contemporary works of living playwrights. Organised with the objective of mobilizing people from various backgrounds, contributing to social diversity and prioritizing the artistic education of those young people who would not normally attend cultural events, this project concerns four classes from three colleges, of which two are members of the educational priority network of the Académie de Lyon.
