MEMORIES, IDENTITIES, RESISTANCES Resolutely metropolitan, Sens Interdits returns with 15 shows from 14 countries with the cooperation of 15 partner theaters. The performers will address our ever-more violent world with humour, tenderness and anger, and they will revisit places of memory and worlds which have disappeared, such as Indochina, Yugoslavia and Rwanda as well as the borderlands such as Lampedusa and Calais and the streets of our cities upon which migrants and the downtrodden are stranded. But this production is above all a theatre piece, a theatre of urgency which enlightens feeds and enriches us with its diversity, and its generous nature offers hope for the future.

Who today could claim that they are not guided by the pursuit of happiness? What lies behind this hackneyed, misused and over-used term? What price are we prepared to pay to experience it? And what sacrifices are we prepared to make to get closer to this Holy Grail? The Codice Ivan company explores these questions in humorous fashion in a performance which references both agitprop and pop culture. Using placards set up on stage, like popular demonstrations, or chalked protests on the ground, a critique of consumer society is drawn in which the phenomenon of happiness would appear to be reduced to simply satisfying desires. These questions, phrases and statements reveal the somewhat over-stated links between our material needs and our personal well-being. By refusing to consider happiness as a private objective, the performers unfurl the social and political challenges of this eternal quest in a performance which oscillates between hopeless rage and scathing irony.

“Everyone has the right to life”. The fact that this is stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says nothing about the way in which European countries interpret it, and nor does it address the question of how it fits in with the reality of migration experienced by the world of today. After having met many asylum seekers, the Nimis Group, an actors’ collective comprising young performers from Belgium, France, Sweden and Switzerland, got to grips with this issue. The resulting piece takes the form of a theatrical fresco in which illegal immigrants rub shoulders with inhabitants, managers with migrants, traffickers with law-enforcement agencies, and it gives free rein to direct and sensitive language. Combining documentary theatre and political reflection, the collective observes European citizenship through the eyes of those who have it, those who decide who can have it and those who don’t have it. Denouncing, not without humour, the implacable reality of today’s migrations, can this micro-society withstand the complexity of the institutional colossus and the patterns of Western domination which surround us?

A former member of a revolutionary group marginalised by official history, Manolo attempts to restore meaning to his life and his struggle by declaring that he has assassinated Augusto Pinochet. The strong reactions of those around him draw him into an introspection which leads us to discover the pobladores, the popular districts in Chile devastated by years of dictatorship and social misery. His monologue revisits the recent history of Chile, from the deep scars left by the dictatorship through to the piercing regard he brings to bear on today’s society. By prompting reflection about the impotence of militancy, Yo Maté a Pinochet offers a poignant eye-witness account of the history of popular struggles and questions the relations between art and politics. Cristian Flores then develops his vision of a popular theatre resolutely anchored in the reality experienced by the world’s most disadvantaged populations. April 1956. Louise, 9 years old, has a French father and Vietnamese mother who is described as “Eurasian”, and she leaves Indochina with her entire family on the boat the Captain Cook. The vessel is scuttled, but in their luggage are fragments of their world such as seeds, peppers, white maize, water bindweed and aubergine. But their arrival at this former military base, a temporary transit camp and barracks not designed to be used as homes, is sinister in mood, the welcome is brutal and what they discover is far removed from the pleasant realities they had imagined. By following Louise, from the time of her exile from Vietnam to her twilight years in the “Chinese camp” in the southwest of France, CAFI weaves the threads of history of the thousands of French people who are not altogether like other people as they are from Indochina. Louise helps us, often with humour, to feel the experience of these thousands of families who were repatriated from Indochina and elsewhere. This is a largely unknown piece of French history that is hidden behind the mask of French citizenship. It is not just the mere account of an individual’s destiny, it is also the story of the destiny of all migrants, immigrants, and indigenous people. The sober and inventive stage set bears the signature of Georges Bigot, an emblematic figure of the theatre and longtime actor alongside Ariane Mnouchkine in the Théâtre du Soleil.

In order to talk about the Rwandan genocide, Milo Rau and the members of the International Institute of Political Murder reconstruct a broadcast in the studio of the Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines (RTLM). This radio station and its journalists constantly incited murder and racial hatred. Without explaining the mechanism which transformed certain citizens into killers, Hate Radio, interpreted by survivors of the genocide, endeavours to render palpable the atmosphere which prevailed in 1994.

A man dragging and pushing an office cabinet around like a modern-day Sisyphus leads us on a journey through his urban wanderings. In a monologue of acidic octosyllables, and to the beat of a bespoke musical accompaniment, Garniouze, a street-art veteran, reveals himself to be a timeless vagabond who denounces misery using forms of language, poetry and slang which echo each other. He speaks of the acrimony of despair and scathing humour of isolation, loneliness and exclusion he experiences on the street in our ever-more fractured society. It is to Jehan Rictus, a 19th century social poet, that we owe The Soliloquies of the Pauper, from which Garniouze drew inspiration when creating this, his first solo show. Written in 1897, the text is still highly topical and it denounces the same injustices as it did a century ago.

Three women, three languages, three destinies. A German, a Pole and a Belarusian woman, all of whom are escapees from the traumas of the Second World War, recount their personal accounts of a past which is nevertheless common to them all. Each of them has been influenced in some way by their own country’s propaganda, and all three of them are pursuing the same objective - to break a fifty-year silence, to break the taboos of their own society, and to finally speak out. In turn, the actors become torturers, victims, conquerors or the defeated in a set of roles that confirms the impossibility of a single absolute truth and highlights a purely feminine look at war, conflict and the figure of the hero. Using witness statements, Displaced Women enlarges our collective memory by offering various fragile and touching statements in contrast to the stark official version of history that is used as a manipulative tool by political regimes. In creating “a place of memory”, Monika Dobrowlańska attempts to show that “great history” can never dominate and erase our individual memories.

Two actors attempt to conquer the minds and hearts of the audience by repeating speeches made by historical figures from our political past. All of them bring a message of hope, either in an inclusive discourse that brings people together and creates a feeling of belonging, or in a deceptive discourse which masks the real intentions of the speaker. Without knowing who the original authors of these political texts are, from J. F. Kennedy to Saddam Hussein, the public votes to elect the person who is to be their representative. In this modern-day era in which the socio-economic crisis is compounded by a crisis of representation, SPEAK! takes a sceptical look at the power of rhetorical performance and the visions of the world it offers. By placing the emphasis on the power of words and the ease with which they can be manipulated, Sanja Mitrovic reminds us that the right to vote, the cornerstone of our democracy, is both precious and fragile. They are outside. They live outside. They sleep outside. Omnipresent in public spaces, the homeless are always outside. Through the character of the “tramp” and the appalling destitution which he portrays, the play, based on the research of Belgian sociologist Patrick Declerck, examines how we function socially today. In this production the actors randomly pick the scenes to play, thus breathing new life into each presentation. It questions the permanent scandal of life on the street and our capacity to “live together” and casts a politically incorrect and uncompromising look at our social mechanisms. This is a stimulating and violent, sombre and fun, pessimistic and joyful spectacle in which the six actors turn their unblinkered and questioning attention to our present-day lives.

Médina Mérika is the story of an American dream, from the Medina, set against the backdrop of the Arab spring. Ali, a fan of American cinema, is a young director whose career is just taking off but in the Medina where he lives, a symbolic paragon of the Arab city, the West is both the emblem of liberty which fascinates and that of decadence, which is despised. Found dead at the bottom of a well, the search for his killer provides a means of exploring an Arab society undergoing radical change, its frictions and frustrations, and its ambiguous relationship with the West. Halfway between fairy tale and musical comedy, Abdelwaheb Sefsaf offers a colourful, energetic and exciting vision of the cultural upheavals currently being played out in Arab societies from the free adaptation of the novel My Name is Red by the great Turkish author Orhan Pamuk. This is a tragi-comedy set between East and West, where humour appears as an escape and a burst of opposition, because any comedy, when looked at from a distance, can only be but a mere detail of a more global tragedy.

Street vendor Sandokan earns his living by selling trinkets to coach passengers in Santiago. He relates his life, which is spent trying to gain “acceso” - access to an elsewhere which he thinks and hopes he deserves - access to a place in society. In this monologue of a tortured soul, Sandokan plunges us into street life and exposes with ferocity the reality of exclusion and reclusion. With dark humour and a disarming authenticity, Roberto Farias presents the soul of an urban gladiator who forces us to look into the eyes of the suffering and distress caused by social misery.

The central cast is made up of an authoritarian, macho and unfaithful father, a submissive mother, who turns a blind eye, an egocentric daughter seeking a good match, and an aspiring young manager who is liberal and without affect. They are a model family in a way. But who is this mad son who the entire family is trying to hide from prying eyes? It would have been ideal to get rid of him, but, in the image of his body, deformed by an excessively tight corset, he is transformed into a being which is at times amorphous and at times monstrous and is able to shatter the veneer of lies. Presented for the first time in France after a successful tour in Buenos Aires, South America and Spain, the play is a reference in contemporary independent Argentinean theatre. Based on a gallery of archetypal characters, Nelson Valente offers an X-ray of liberal Argentinean society and asks powerful questions about differences, the place of the other, and disabilities. For this, her very first production, Kamilė Gudmonaitė, a student at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, chose to present extracts from Strindberg’s A Dream Play and to experiment with it in her attempt to create dream-like theatre. Based on the metaphor of a school classroom, the young actors seek a state of mind mid-way between sleep and wakefulness. This state alone, it was thought, would offer the answers questions which are not accessible to logical thinking. Why, for example, would anyone wish at any price to belong to a system which progresses by crushing our individuality? To belong to an infernal mechanism which ruins our dreams, limits our desires and suppresses our creativity? Precise, energetic and full of humour, acrobatic, choreographic and musical, the show was well-received at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, where it was awarded 1st prize in the “Young Creators” category and at the Brno Festival, where it won awarded the best theater performance and the best director awards. with ×French ×In English, subtitles Running time 45 mins

Women in World War Two In echo of the play Displaced Women This visit offers an opportunity to rediscover the German occupation as seen by the women who were at the forefront of all forms of combat, from the fight for better living conditions to joining the French Resistance.

Aligator For this, their first eponymous album, Nestor Kéa, an off-the-wall DJ, Georges Baux, an unfathomable multi-instrumentalist and charismatic leader Abdelwaheb Sefsaf have created a new and percussive language - a singular form of scat that is both subtle and brutal. The lyrics are about love and hate but they also address inequality, fighting for one’s rights and hope. This musical odyssey takes us from the Delta to Detroit, at the crossroads that leads from North to South and combines traditionalism with an electronic resonance.
